LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR When I wrote this letter one year ago we all imagined that life would have returned to normal and it has not. One year later we are all still being impacted by the pandemic. One thing, however, that has changed is a new awareness and appreciation for the environment. In record-breaking numbers people are seeking a new connection with nature. Botanical Gardens are being appreciated as places that are safe, accessible and grounding in an otherwise unsettled world.

Betty Ford Alpine Gardens has seen this increased need for not only a connection with nature but a thirst for education that gives wellauthored messaging about important scientific information. In addition, like our partner organizations the zoos, Gardens are reevaluating their purpose and taking on an increasingly pivotal role in conserving the planet. Kew Gardens, one of the world’s leading botanical institutions, produced its 10 year manifesto with a pledge to “understand and protect plants and fungi for the wellbeing of people and the future of all the earth”. A lofty goal indeed but one that Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is already working towards in the alpine environment.

Thanks to all of you we are leading a coalition of other botanical gardens in a commitment to understand the alpine environment better, protecting its flora and consequently also its fauna. This begins with the Gardens that help people make a direct connection with mountain flora, increasing understanding and therefore appreciation.

Whether you enjoy the Gardens as a place to connect with nature and detach from the everyday or share a passion for its role in helping Mother Earth we are all together in enjoying this beautiful place. The front image is from the Gardens' new coffee table book released this summer. We hope you enjoy.

New BooK! ON THE ROOF OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS: THE BOTANICAL LEGACY OF BETTY FORD ALPINE GARDENS Published June 2021 On the Roof of the Rocky Mountains offers an intimate view of Vail's treasured botanic garden, Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. Written by landscape architect and Colorado-based author Sarah Chase Shaw, the book examines the extraordinary effort put forth by a group of community-minded citizens to develop a worldrenowned botanic garden devoted to high alpine plants. Named in honor of former First Lady Betty Ford, an avid gardener and part-time resident of Vail, the Gardens showcases over 3,000 alpine species in a collection of individual gardens devoted to unique alpine environments around the globe.

Funding for the book came from Gardens' Trustee Richard T. Liebhaber in honor of his late wife, Kirsten E. Liebhaber. Mrs. Liebhaber was a librarian, life-long avid reader, teacher, and a friend to all. Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is pleased to announce that every Public Library across the state has received a complimentary copy of the Gardens' new book, On The Roof of The Rocky Mountains: The Botanical Legacy of Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. Special thanks to Vail Librarian, Lori Barnes, for her help in coordinating this effort.

PLANTS ARE AN ANSWER 2021 EXHIBIT

Plants are an answer to climate change. They are nature’s reservoirs for absorbing carbon dioxide as they grow. Practical plant-based solutions to a warming climate based on today’s technology were highlighted in the Education Center from June through October. The exhibit was inspired by Project Drawdown, a plan of eighty solutions developed by a coalition of researchers and scientists to reverse global warming.

An outdoor exhibit illustrated the environmental impact created by the different foods we eat.

This exhibits were underwritten in part by The Town of Vail Commission on Special Events and a private family foundation.

Children discover what a high altitude landscape looks like by building their own in Alpine World

FAMILY FUN

This summer’s Education Intern, Kyle Dickens, added a repertoire of new activities. Children created animal masks and coloring pages focused on the montane and alpine ecosystems surrounding Vail. This year's family scavenger hunt helped children discover the environmental impact of food.

A curriculum of four classes rotated throughout the summer. "Become a Botanical Illustrator” introduced children to working with charcoal, understanding the basic principles of art, and learning flower anatomy and the scientific names of plants. Children toured the gardens and selected flowers to identify and draw.

Support from members and individual philantrhopy allows the Gardens' Education team to curate new exhibits and activities each year. The team developed the "Plants Are An Answer" Exhibit to showcase how plants sequester carbon and to highlight the benefits of a plant-based diet.

"Critters in the Creek” focused on understanding water pollution, metamorphosis, and catching and observing the macroinvertebrates that live in Gore Creek. A great time was had playing in the water and learning about the importance of protecting our riparian areas. “Terrarium Design” demonstrated what plants need in order to grow and what adaptations succulents have in order to survive the harsh conditions of the desert. “Painting Amongst the Pines,” an acrylic landscape class, encouraged children to take inspiration from the nature surrounding Gore Creek.

SUMMER PROJECTS BIJOU'S GARDEN As one of the original perennial beds, this garden is seen as visitors walk through the main gate. Bijou’s garden was renovated and replanted this past summer. Unusual and carefully selected perennials provide a splash of color, texture and interest from spring through fall and is also home to the Betty Ford and Sheika Dayliles which bloom in mid-summer. Project supported by the David and Mary Davies Family Foundation Right: Bijou's Garden will now have sweeps of color from spring through fall.

POLLINATOR GARDEN Located to the east of the Education Center, the expanded Pollinator Garden connects visitors to the top of the Gardens.

This major renovation in partnership with the Town of Vail features over a thousand pollinator friendly perennials, shrubs and trees that are ornamental, low water and educational to homeowners who want to create sustainable garden habitats in the mountain regions.

This area is now a must-see focal point overlooking Ford Park and the Education Center.

ROOFTOP TRELLIS PROJECT This project creates additional opportunities for both educational programming and increased use of the space for community events and rental space.

Phase I: The project extended the trellis framing over the entire rooftop area. This phase was completed with support from Kathy and Eric Borgen, Susan and Harry Frampton, Jenny and Philip Maritz, Liz and Timm Paxson, El Pomar Foundation, Mary Sue and Mike Shannon, The Stockton Group, and the Town of Vail.

Phase II: The addition of weatherproof shade cloth & drop-down curtains will complete this project and we are currently raising the remaining $35,000.

With the completion of this project, the entire rooftop space will become a great community gathering space all summer long.

CONSERVATION CONSERVATION HIGHLIGHTS It’s been an exciting and productive year for our alpine conservation efforts! The recently published Alpine Strategy (officially, the North American Botanic Garden Strategy for Alpine Plant Conservation) has been getting attention from other Gardens and organizations interested in participating. As a refresher, the Alpine Strategy is a blueprint for understanding and protecting the alpine plants and habitats of North America, and was developed by Executive Director, Nicola Ripley, and Education Director, Nanette Kuich, along with colleagues from Denver Botanic Gardens. One of our goals is to increase the reach of the Strategy by working more closely with our partners and recruiting new allies.

As part of the strategy, we have partnered with the Colorado Natural Heritage Program to survey rare plants including the Lime-Loving Wooly Willow (Salix calcicola). Image below.

In collaboration with Denver Botanic Gardens, we have partnered on several projects with Alexandra Seglias, Seed Conservation Research Associate including setting up a warming chamber experiment to understand how climate change may affect two rare alpine plant species, Alpine Twinpod (Physaria alpina) and Weber’s Saw-Wort (Saussurea weberi), as well as collecting rare and endemic species for research, including Alpine Larkspur (Delphinium alpestre), Rothrock’s Easter Daisy (Townsendia rothrockii), and Hoosier Pass Ipomopsis (Ipomopsis globularis).

We also accompanied several Colorado University Denver researchers on an expedition to search for Penland’s Eutrema (Eutrema penlandii), the only federally listed alpine plant in Colorado, which has a very narrow range and is of great ecological importance, but is also a very small plant (usually less than 5 centimeters!) and hard to find. We did find a couple of specimens by searching on our hands and knees! We also visited the NEON site (National Ecological Observatory Network) at Niwot Ridge, an alpine research hub and used our alpine botany skills to help set up several mycological plots to study alpine soil fungal communities in a variety of habitats.

WORK IN THE ALPINE NOTES FROM THE FIELD

Emma Byerly, 2021 Conservation Intern, pictured to the left, collects an herbarium specimen of Sulphur Flower (Eriogonum umbellatum). As part of our permitting process with the US Forest Service, we are required to submit a voucher specimen of any species from which we plan to collect seeds. Our herbarium vouchers are sent to the Kathryn Kalmbach Herbarium at Denver Botanic Gardens, where they serve as proof of the identification of the species and a record of biodiversity.

Center: Weber’s Saw-Wort (Saussurea weberi), one of the rare alpine plants found in the Mosquito Range and the subject of a warming chamber experiment to understand how climate change will affect some of our rare and endemic alpine plants.

Right: The Arctic Alpine Forget-Me-Not (Eritrichium nanum var. elongatum) is one of the most noticeable and charismatic alpine plants found in the Rockies, and is one of our team's favorites to see in the field! This year, we collected seeds from this species for long-term storage at the National Lab for Genetic Resources Preservation as part of our ex-situ conservation efforts.

GROWING THE NEXT GENERATION

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The internship program empowers young people to gain valuable experience in a botanical garden career. The interns teach family programs, design garden interpretation, collect seed in the alpine, prepare herbarium specimens, assist with garden maintenance and curation of the plant database. They also showcase their knowledge with a workshop during the summer. These experiences help guide the future career paths of our interns.

Curator Nick Courtens and Senior Horticulturist Colin Lee started their careers at the Gardens through the internship program.

The Internship program is funded by an endowment gift from the Frechette Family Foundation. Internship applications now open.

"I have a dear friend whose 93-year-old mother, Bercis, died this year. Bercis was raised in Turkey and was an avid gardener and last summer I gave her a private tour of the Gardens. She loved the entire garden but was particularly touched that we had alpine plants from the mountains of Turkey in the Silk Road Garden. I am glad Bercis was able to see some flowers from her childhood so soon before her death, I think it meant the world to her. Al and I would like to make a memorial contribution in honor of Bercis Zaralioglu Ovunc." - Mo Stiner, volunteer and supporter.

Many gifts are made each year like the one Mo and Al chose to make to honor their friend. We also have a program where you can "plant bulbs" in the Gardens in honor of someone. This is available year-round at two levels.
