OKALA Members and Guests,
Welcome to our annual convention. This year is just a little more special than the years before. We are celebrating 26 years of advocating for the seniors of Oklahoma and have exciting news on the horizon. We are honored you will be a part of the unveiling of our next chapter as change agents for our state and industry.
When we started this organization in 1997, it was the vision of the pioneers of our industry like Dirk O’Hara and Diane Hambric to create an organization that would be based on collaboration, partnership, and passion.
As we travel forward 26 years, we have seen our industry grow leaps and bounds both in sheer volume and innovation. The ability to adapt, change and overcome has allowed our industry to be stable and provide security for the residents, families, and associates we serve. While there are many highlights to celebrate in the past 26 years, the resiliency, passion, and dedication, each of you have shown over the past four years has been nothing short of palatable. That determination and resiliency will catapult us forward.
As we look ahead in the senior living industry, we have strong headwinds to face and challenges to navigate, especially in workforce development and the regulatory environment. Facing these headwinds and continuing to grow as an industry, it will be vital to continue collaborating and partnering as senior advocates working towards the best outcomes for our industry.
The Oklahoma Assisted Living Association Board of Directors and Members continue to honor the foundation we were built on as we push into new frontiers. As you are at the convention this week, we are excited to share with you new initiatives that are coming in the next year. Enjoy this week together with your peers and colleagues. Enjoy the time away from your community to learn, grow and dream. Enjoy investing in yourself so you can in turn re-invest in your team.
We are glad you are here!
Lori Morton, OKALA Board Chair
“The only way to achieve the impossible “The only way to achieve the impossible is to believe that it is possible.” is to believe that it is possible.”
st SteptoaWonderlandinSeniorLiving! Who would have thought this theme would how so much that could be related to our industry? As the Educational Events Committee and OKALA staff were working on education topics, speakers, and décor there were so many “Alice in Wonderland” quotes that seemed to resound with what we do every day.
“IknewwhoIwasthis morning, but I'vechanged afewtimessincethen”definitely relates to those precious individuals we care for that have dementia. And “Itwouldbesoniceif somethingmadesenseforachange”,when we discuss the ever-changing rules and regulations. We had a few good laughs but took YOUR input seriously as we designed these 3 days of educational sessions. We hope that you will bring back valuable education to better serve your residents and staff. Be better prepared for the newest regulations and rules. Have new resources to help with staffing & employees. You will also have numerous opportunities to implement new resident quality of life programs. And when we adjourn, we hope you will say “Ican'tgobacktoyesterdaybecause Iwasadifferentpersonthen.” Not all of these resources will be found in your education sessions. Our trade show is packed with more vendors than ever! You will find new vendors that have some of the newest technology, vendors to help with your bottom lines and vendors to help you with your emergency plans. You will also find those friendly faces of the Vendors you have come to love over the years.
And of course, what is an OKALA Convention without a little bit of fun? There will be many opportunities for networking; lots of door prizes; plus we have brought back our “Massage for a Cause!”. The fun begins on Tuesday night, so please join us at the Board of Director’s “Down the Rabbit Hole” Tea Party Opening Reception.
“Everyadventurerequiresafirststep”and I do hope you find your new adventure here at our 2023 Annual Convention & Trade Show!

Title Speaker(s) Session Description
Opening Speaker, "Mastering the Story"
Dennis McIntee , CEO & Co-Founder, Leadership Development Group (LDG)
Have you ever considered the power of the stories you tell yourself? As humans, we subconsciously connect experiences and seek meaning in everything we encounter. Those encounters form stories and are often rooted entirely in experiences from our past (both good and bad). The problem with these stories is that they have the power to become triggers for negative emotion and drama. If we can learn to control the story we form in our minds without knowing facts, we have the power to control our feelings. As a Senior Living Manager , you have 3 key audiences for your story. First, you have the internal story your employees are telling themselves. Then, you have a governing body (OSDH/Owner/Corporate) telling themselves a story. Finally, you have an outward story you are sharing with your audience - residents, family members, third party providers, or colleagues - that you want them to hear and understand.

Session Description
This presentation will focus on best practices to manage costs, while enhancing your residents' meal and dining options. We will begin by uncovering operational best practices like benchmarking costs and productivity and audits to manage expenses. Having this data puts a foodservice operator in a position of knowledge to uncover areas that need improvement, and to validate when to request a higher budget. We will review efective solutions to labor saving operations and menu ideas, including more ways to serve healthy initiatives on a budget. RETA BROWN Service Award for Excellence
In 2014, Oklahoma, OKALA and the Assisted Living Community lost one of our own too soon. Reta Brown was a mentor to many and upheld a culture of excellence for assisted livings and the care they give to Seniors. In her memory, the Reta Brown Service Award for Excellence was established. This award is not given yearly as to meet the criteria one must have a history of being dedicated to seniors; the care they receive in assisted livings; and a proven record of excellence for others.
