2021-2022

It was a delight to have Jan Emlen (pictured right) provide a tour in August when Mary Rousseau’s daughter Zan Stark and grandson Peter Stark paid a visit. They remain close friends of the school.

THE ROUSSEAU NAME is familiar to members of The Bay School community. It appears above the entrance to our main building and is mentioned daily as a reference point in countless conversations among students, faculty, staff, and visitors. It is also a reflection of the Rousseau family’s importance to our school’s history.

Back in 1980, Mary Rousseau was a summer resident with a large home and acreage on Blue Hill’s Beech Hill Road. At the time, Jan Emlen was founding a new independent elementary school in Blue Hill, to be named The Bay School. It would offer a holistic education by integrating the intellectual, artistic and imaginative nature of children, as well as a reverence for the natural world, across all areas of learning. When Jan asked Mary if she would consider renting her summer home during the academic year to launch her school, Mary supported the idea enthusiastically.

As enrollment grew, so did the need for more space. The Bay School relocated to its current location in the fall of 1992 with 60 students, and dedicated the Henry Rousseau Building in recognition of Mary’s role. (Her preference was that the building reflect her late husband’s name, not her own.) Mary remained a steady friend, advocate and benefactor. Jumping ahead to 2022, the Rousseau influence continues in physical space and spirit.

Though Mary passed away in 2015, the school she nourished continues to thrive. We currently support nearly 130 children and families in our Early Childhood through Grade 8 programs. The Bay School has grown over the years to become one of the region’s most respected educational assets and a center of community engagement. Hundreds of alumni have taken their lessons of “head, heart, and hands” into the world.

To be sure, it was Jan Emlen and her founding vision that inspired Mary to become and remain involved. We are grateful to Jan for starting The Bay School and establishing the foundation that strongly continues today. Because of her vision and commitment, hundreds of others have stepped forward over the ensuing years with financial and in-kind support to help sustain the school’s vision and quality.

The following pages gratefully acknowledge the many individuals and organizations who generously contributed to The Bay School during the 2021-22 fiscal year. On behalf of our students, alumni, faculty, staff, and Board of Directors, I thank you for your support.

We look forward to honoring you and others in the years to come.

Best wishes,

Remember that phrase from the 1988 movie Field of Dreams? In 2020, The Bay School tipped that quote on its side: “They’re here, so we need to build it.”

Increasing enrollment – especially during the pandemic when many families joined our community – presented clear and urgent needs for a campus expansion, including additional classrooms. But The Bay School has been planning a larger early childcare center, and a larger library for some time now, as well as improving our campus flow and athletic fields. The Board of Directors has committed to strategically meeting these needs in phases and successfully completing each one and raising the funds necessary before tackling the next.

Phase 1 is now complete, but here’s the caveat. We took a line of credit to complete the building project, and we will continue with fundraising to close the balance on the note. While we recognized this strategy was risky, we felt we were in a Catch-22. We had wanted to increase our enrollment for a long time, but didn’t want to build prematurely without dedicated students. Now we had the students but no space to put them!

Two new, large classroom buildings are now situated where the yurt used to be to house the upper grades - Ian Chittenden’s 7/8 class and Scott Springer’s 5/6 class. These beautiful new spaces have allowed us to increase enrollment in our Early Childhood program. Now we can better meet the needs of our families by filling two Early Childhood classrooms with students ages three to five plus have space for 28 families in our Parent-Child program.

If you build it, they will come.

These new spaces have also freed up Emlen Hall and the art/woodworking space where, during COVID, classes were being held. Because we needed these important community spaces for classrooms, our plays, all-school gatherings, Winter Faire, and music performances could not be held. During COVID, that was not an issue. Now that we are (hopefully) on the other side of the limits of the pandemic, we can gather again as a community and get our festival calendar back in order!

If you have not visited the new classrooms, we invite you to come take a tour. The classrooms are connected by a large deck, which also serves as an outside classroom or performance space. The site has a small clearing with a fire pit and has also been sited for Phase 2 – a new school library. Just call or email us to set up a time to visit.

For more information on how you can help with the campaign, please get in touch with Lynn Boulger, lynn.boulger@gmail.com or (207) 669-2566.

At the heart of The Bay School experience live our teachers. Honoring the children at every stage of their development, our experienced faculty and staff both lead and follow the child through their time at The Bay School. In relationships that span many years, and often are still of vital importance decades after graduation, the warm student-teacher connections that we cultivate are the wellspring of this deeply impactful education. The teachers strive to actively model engaged and critical thinking, respect for differences, collaboration, and joy in learning. As importantly, the faculty and staff share profound gratitude to stand in witness to and nourish the unfolding of healthy childhood.

Amy Bramblett Administrative Assistant

Amy joined the administrative team in September of 2021 after years as a very active volunteer and mother to two Bay School graduates. Receiving a degree in Women’s Studies and Psychology from the University of Rochester, she has worked as a preschool teacher, a summer camp counselor, an AmeriCorps volunteer, a children’s museum guide, a cashier, a membership coordinator, and an office administrator. Amy arrived excited to be part of The Bay School family in a whole new way.

Maple Pollock Early Childhood Teacher

Maple began teaching our youngest students in North Cottage in September of 2021. Previously she has worked with children of all ages in nature connection schools and programs around the country. Maple has a B.A. in International Intercultural Studies from Pitzer College, a graduate certificate from Islandwood in Elementary Education focusing on equity, environment, and community, and LifeWays Fundamentals training. Maple loves being a mama to her daughter, creating art in many mediums, and spending time in the wild world.

Laura Bryant Math Teacher

Laura joins The Bay School community this year as a mathematics instructor. She has a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Maine and has been teaching in local schools with a specialty in math since 2007. She lives in Ellsworth with her husband and two daughters, both of whom attend The Bay School. She enjoys reading, writing, swimming, skiing, and exploring with her family – and of course playing with numbers! She is actively delving into the Waldorf model and loves helping students grow.

We welcome new faculty and staff 2021 and 2022

Molly Gawler Games and Movement Teacher

Molly finds great joy in moving her body. In the past she has enjoyed and taught dance (contemporary, modern and ballet) circus arts, parkour, kung fu, acrobatics, and Cyr wheel. She holds a BFA in Dance from SUNY Purchase Conservatory. She has traveled the world with Pilobolus Dance Theater and came back to her home state of Maine where she continues movement exploration and improvisation. She loves the integration of all arts, music, and dance, and she learns so much from the greatest teachers in the world: children. She is blessed to have a beloved family at home including her husband Lao and children Caspian and Mica.

Jean Pauly Early Childhood Assistant

Jean Pauly joined us in 2022 as an assistant in our Early Childhood program. Jean has worked as a library assistant in both Ellsworth and Portsmouth, NH and as a music teacher at Seacoast Charter School in NH. She is also a farmer and co-owner of Garen’s Greens at Schoodic Hollow Farm in Franklin. Jean received a Bachelor of Arts in Art at Houghton College in New York. In her spare time she enjoys hiking, swimming, cross country skiing, and dancing.

Ghigs Razi Lower Grades Teacher

Ghigs Razi joined us in 2022 from the West Coast after 17 years of class teaching at The Siskiyou School in Ashland, Oregon. She taught her last class all the way from 1st to 8th grade, graduating her 28 students in June, 2022. Ghigs was born in Blue Hill and grew up in Washington, D.C. and on Cape Rosier in Brooksville, Maine, attending both The Bay School and George Stevens Academy. She graduated from Colorado College in 2004 and received her Waldorf training through the Rudolf Steiner College in Sacramento, CA. She and her partner Michael have two girls who attend The Bay School: Juniper and Grace. Ghigs loves to sing, sail, and spend time with her family!

Paul Valentine Woodworking Teacher

Paul loves to make things, anything and everything, but especially things out of wood. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee and went on to work as an architectural and museum exhibit designer. Paul is now a professional fine artist, focusing primarily on woodcut printmaking and working in oil paint, sculpture, and fine woodworking fabrication. Spending long periods of time in nature is very important to Paul and his family, and it often inspires his work. He has thru-hiked over 7,000 miles of trails including the entire Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and The Araroa Trail (in New Zealand). He lives in Surry with his wife and daughter.

PRESENTING

Bay School 8th grade students (now alumni class of ‘22!) presented their projects last May in Emlen Hall to a room full of their peers and a handful of special guests. Read their words below describing their experiences.

FOR MY 8TH GRADE PROJECT

I decided to learn to scuba dive!

My mentor was Jenn Muscato. I have spent about 55 hours on my project which included online learning, researching, learning hand signals, becoming familiar with my scuba gear and finally actually diving and getting certified. This project has been such an amazing experience. I’ve been able to go to places I never thought I would have gone, seen things I never would have seen without scuba and I’ve also been able to breathe underwater! I’m so glad I had the opportunity to do scuba diving as my project, not just because of the amazing things I saw, but also because I was very much pushed out of my comfort zone. I had to do some problem solving on my own that made me realize I am capable of doing so much!

FOR MY 8TH GRADE PROJECT

I learned how to design, sew, and tailor clothing. My mentors were WendiLou Salman and Bess Turner. I have become so fascinated by the idea of drawing, designing and sewing clothes that I can be certain will fit and that I’ll love. I’m happy to say I have probably ten times more patience with sewing than I did last year. I learned so much, and I know I’ll continue to sew and use the knowledge that my mentors have given me.

FOR MY 8TH GRADE PROJECT

I explored the process of painting. My mentor for this project was Katy Helman. The theme I chose for my paintings was Cities and Landmarks. I learned that not everything I do has to be perfect and hanging on to my desire for my paintings to actually look great was the reason my project could feel underwhelming at times. But honestly, painting is a genuinely very helpful skill, and being able to do it is better than not. Even if you just have to repaint a segment of wall after ripping a chunk of it off with the tape you accidentally put there.

FOR MY 8TH GRADE PROJECT

I decided to study Fitness and Injury Prevention. My mentor was Bob St. Peter. I wanted to learn how to get stronger in a safe way. I was inspired to choose this topic because of my love of tennis, physical activity, and sports in general. It was a great opportunity to study something I have always been curious about. I have gained so much respect for what my body can do for me and in turn, I want to do everything I can to treat it well.

FOR MY 8TH GRADE PROJECT

I chose to explore the basics of Krav Maga. In Hebrew, Krav Maga means “contact combat” or “close quarters combat”. It is an Israeli self defense system founded by a Jewish man named Imi Lichtenfeld. My mentor was Kelly Cutler ’05. I think it’s important to learn self defense, but hopefully we never need to use it. It’s much better to have the skills and not need to use them, than to need those skills and not have them. I learned so much and am open to new things even if they are outside my comfort zone.

FOR MY 8TH GRADE PROJECT

I wrote a song and learned how to record my own music. My mentors were Meg Chittenden and Zeke Sacaridiz ‘17. Writing songs has always been a way to express my feelings...kind of like writing in a diary. As part of my project, I knew that I also wanted to learn more about recording my music. One of the challenges for me during this project was figuring out how to use my equipment, but the biggest challenge of all was getting over my stage fright, which I am still working on. I have learned that you really need to have self-confidence and patience with yourself.

FOR MY 8TH GRADE PROJECT

I chose to explore the art of Acting. My mentor was Colt Neihart. I focused on two aspects of acting: inflection and characterization. My mentor Colt showed me, among many other things, some useful warm-ups to help loosen my vocal chords. I also learned a skill called “backstory”, which means writing a character biography. Creating a bio is extremely important for an actor to convey a believable character for the audience. Acting is something that I will continue throughout my life. I can’t wait to use my skills in all the many plays I plan to be a part of…

FOR MY 8TH GRADE PROJECT

I made ice cream and other frozen desserts. My mentor was Karl Holmes. I learned how the ice cream maker works, and how the flavors are made. Some are flavored with extracts, others are made differently. I am very happy with how this project came out, and of all the options for a project, this was quite safe, fun, and delicious. And most of the time I made ice cream or sorbet and it was usually edible, although it was especially satisfying when the texture and the flavor turned out just right. I will definitely continue to put my ice cream maker to use. Not only have I learned about cooking in this project but also the science behind it.

FOR MY 8TH GRADE PROJECT

I decided to write and illustrate a collection of children’s stories. My mentor was Kim Ridley. She taught me that I should think about a problem that the characters should overcome. Doing that would make the story sound stronger and more exciting. I tried to think of an obstacle or challenge that the characters could help each other overcome. At the end of each story, I would show how they had grown and changed. Throughout this project I have learned a lot about writing, revising, and editing. I am so glad I picked this project and was lucky enough to have such a great mentor to teach me so much about the writing process.

Congratulations

The Bay School Class of 2022

WORDS TO THE GRADUATES FROM THEIR TEACHER, MR SPRINGER

What makes a river sing are the stones and eddies, the riffles and edges. Your self education has begun. School is part of the shaping of your river of life. Your family, classmates, teachers, and I have marveled at your flow, nudged you out of shallows, grew quiet when you entered the deeps, and hoped to keep the waters clear and sweet. When you give your attention to something of true value, you are distilling a part of yourself into a potent droplet. Gathering these is what gives your river its vitality. And the capacity to give to others. What a gift it has been to be a part of your journey. We wish you well wherever your course takes you.

2000

Brett Leach

Brett ‘00 happened to sit down to lunch at The Patio in Castine. Little did he know, but his seasoned server was Julia Traub ‘20 (pictured below, right), his Arnold Palmer was expertly poured by Emrys Murnik ‘22 (below left), and his lobster roll was created by chef Sadie Lieser ‘22 (below middle).

ALUMNI CLASS NOTES

Sotherd [Steer] Calloc’h

When Tatiana [Urban] ‘08 (Pictured below left with Sotherd ‘08 below right) and I met at The Bay School in Mrs. Stuckey’s first grade class, we couldn’t have anticipated the decades of friendship that would follow. There aren’t words to succinctly describe our bond or our history together, but without a doubt, we can say that The Bay School had a profound impact. I am now a Middle School teacher myself at the American School of Paris, located in France; I had relocated to complete my junior and senior years of college abroad, and subsequently met my (now) husband. As an educator, I find myself reflecting on my experiences as a student at The Bay School almost daily.

Although she won’t be thrilled that I’m bragging about her, Tatiana Urbin ‘08 is now a VP Product Manager at a successful financial firm in New York. She is one of the most inspiring women I know. We owe our friendship to our Bay School years, and when I asked Tatiana to speak at my wedding ceremony this past July, she couldn’t have chosen a more fitting, beautiful verse to recite:

Tatiana’s words (at my wedding):

“I’d like to share something that is very familiar to Soz and me - we said it every single morning for the better part of a decade at primary school - this morning verse is a little ode to all of our younger selves; calling in to this beautiful ceremony the little joys of our youth:

I look into the world

In which the sun is shining In which the stars are sparkling In which the stones repose.

Where living plants are growing

Where sentient beasts are living And man imbued with soul builds there in the spirit house. I look into the soul, That lives within my being The World Creator weaves In sunlight and in soul light, In world space there without In soul depths here within. To Thee Creator Spirit I will now turn my heart To ask that strength and blessing For loving and for learning

Both Tatiana and I were shaped by our experiences from Grades K-8 at The Bay School. I, of course, burst into tears as she recited this verse during the ceremony. I think of my teachers and The Bay School community with so much love and appreciation. Sending love and hugs.

Nicholas Steenberg

I now live in Portland ME, and I recently took a position as the USA Sales and Service Manager for Dragonfly Trimarans. Dragonfly is a high-end sailboat manufacturer in Denmark. We had a mini Bay School Class of 2010 reunion in Long Island, Bahamas this past January 2022.

2020

Jing Russell

After my time at The Bay school, I discovered a love for connecting with my Chinese heritage through learning Mandarin. This passion for diving deeply into subjects awarded me the National Security Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Virtual Summer Institute (VSI) scholarship with CIEE Shanghai in 2021, a six-week language-intensive program. I have also found my biological sister through DNA testing and intend to return to China and use my language abilities to find my biological family. Since NSLI-Y, I have become the Chinese Club President and the Math Team Captain at John Bapst Memorial High School, where I study college level calculus and upper-level Chinese. I believe that The Bay School helped me to develop the skills to reach these incredible milestones in my life!

Sylvia Burns spent the season working on sailboats around the Caribbean. Here on a 75’ sailboat (pictured above right) on delivery from Florida to Antigua. Wind, rain, big sea, but something very special about being completely surrounded by the horizon. Sylvia attends Northeastern University in Boston.
