Beth C Wright was born on Beals Island At the age of twenty-four, Beth was diagnosed with breast cancer. Following surgery and chemotherapy she sought out resources in Washington County and the area that could help her in her cancer journey. She found few resources. As a result, she started a support group at Down East Community Hospital with the help of Barbara Barnett, Director of Down East Hospice Services. Shortly after the birth of her second child she learned that her cancer had spread to her liver and bones She faced her disease with strength and faith and created the Choose Life Foundation a short time before her death in August of 2000.
The Choose Life Foundation’s mission was to provide cancer survivors with educational, inspirational, and alternate treatment information. The Foundation also provided financial assistance to individuals In May of 2001, the first Annual Beth C. Wright Walk for Life was held in Addison; five hundred people walked in this event.
In 2003, representatives from the Choose Life Foundation talked with Dr. Molly Collins and other health care professionals as well as community leaders in the Ellsworth area about the possibility of starting a cancer resource center in Ellsworth. The hope of these community leaders was that the Beth C. Wright Center would provide education and support for cancer patients and their families by providing free programs in a warm and welcoming environment. In January 2004, the Choose Life Foundation made a grant to these community leaders to start the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center

Living well with cancer can be a challenging journey, but support groups offer a vital lifeline to help individuals navigate the physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of their experience. These groups provide a safe and understanding environment where people affected by cancer whether patients, survivors, or caregivers can share their stories, offer encouragement, and exchange practical advice.
Participation in a support group can foster a sense of community and belonging, reducing feelings of isolation and anxiety. Moreover, these groups often provide access to valuable resources, such as expert talks or information on the latest treatments. By connecting with others who truly understand what they are going through, individuals can gain strength, hope, and resilience, ultimately enhancing their quality of life while living with cancer.

Support for survivors is a crucial aspect of healing and empowerment, providing individuals who have experienced trauma or adversity with the resources and assistance they need to rebuild their lives. This support can take many forms, including emotional, psychological, and practical help.
Emotional support often involves counseling or therapy, where survivors can express their feelings in a safe environment and work through their experiences with a professional
Psychological support may include group therapy, allowing survivors to connect with others who have faced similar challenges, fostering a sense of community and shared understanding.
Practical support can encompass legal assistance, financial aid, or housing services, ensuring that survivors have access to the necessary tools to regain stability and independence.
Organizations and networks dedicated to supporting survivors play a pivotal role in advocating for their rights and raising awareness about the issues they face, ultimately contributing to a more informed and compassionate society.
We are pleased to introduce Agnes, one of two telehealth unites based at the Baileyville office.
Given the current long travel distances for cancer services, an identified barrier to access, the Baileyville Cancer Resource Center will provide "Agnes", 2 telehealth units for multi-disciplinary cancer consultations by addressing complex aspects of cancer such as the emotional and logistical aspects, the wrap around support serves contribute to improving the overall quality of life for individuals and their loved ones, and linkage to continuum of care.
This will also allow cancer patients without transportation the opportunity to participate in telehealth and other support options they would otherwise be without. Washington County has extremely limited public transportation and patients without an existing support system cannot access necessary services/support which causes poorer outcomes.
