BGA Trip to Pompeii and Herculaneum On Wednesday 25th March students and teachers from Bethnal Green Academy started out on what was to be an epic trip to Pompeii and Herculaneum. To set the destruction of these ancient Roman towns in context, they first visited Mount Vesuvius, the volcano which still looms menacingly over the whole bay of Naples. Next came Herculaneum, a wealthy seaside resort at the time, which had been buried under 20 metres of ash. They Wondered the streets of a city frozen in time and students loved discovering the villas and Roman inscriptions and even had a go at translating them! Pompeii the next day was equally impressive: standing in the huge amphitheatre where hundreds of gladiators had stood before them and imagining fighting before a crowd of 20,000 spectators was magical. On the final day, they sailed across to Capri and explored this beautiful island. A long, winding walk led them to the Villa of Jupiter, which Emperor Tiberius had built because of his fear of assassination in Rome.The BGA trip to Pompeii was a huge success: students were really engaged, always asking questions and most importantly enjoying learning. This trip has brought students’ study of Latin and Roman culture to life!

Musical Moments

On Thursday 19th and Friday 20th March a group of BGA talented, young actors and musicians performed extracts from three well known musicals: Bugsy Malone, The Phantom of the Opera and Blood Brothers. The audience was thrilled to watch the cast sing, dance and act with such skill and versatility. It was a truly enjoyable and engaging performance. DofE Camping Expedition On the weekend of 25th - 26th April students completing their Bronze Duke Of Edinburgh award successfully completed their practice camping expedition. This follows the silver expedition last month. 31 students spent the weekend camping, setting up tents, building fires, cooking their own dinner and completing independent walking treks where they used the orienting skills they have been developing on the course. Students represented the school extremely well and staff had several comments from locals praising their attitude and efforts. Working in unfamiliar groups and in challenging circumstance, students developed invaluable life skills focussing on teamwork, independence and leadership. 75 students are completing the Duke of Edinburgh this year. Thank you to all staff that gave up their weeked to support. Mr Oakley.

Tower Hamlets Public Speaking Competition 2015

In January of this year 20 Year 10 students took part in the Tower Hamlets speaking competition which involved members from the business sector teaching public speaking skills to students. From those students three of our students Abdulahi Yussuf, Asante Miya and Abdul Mohamed went through to the semi finals at the prestigious Beazley Tower in central London. All three boys gave compelling speeches on the subjects of climate change and Nanotechnology.

Abdulahi Yussuf was one of only three students selected to go through to the finals.

The final took place on the 29th March in the Lloyds insurance building. Abdulahi gave an outstanding speech to a room full of people from business, politics and his peers. A huge well done to Abdulahi whose speech was commended for its detail and humane approach. He was also praised for his development over the course of the competition.

For the first time in BGA history the under 13’s football team were crowned champions of the Saturday morning football league 2014-15.
