Community Cohesion Week

During the week commencing 18th October the academy celebrated its inaugural “Community Cohesion Week” an event to clarify to students and staff what a socially cohesive school looks like. Each day students randomly selected at least one good deed to do to 'make someone's day’. Also each student had a Community Cohesion 'passport' in which they recorded thier individual acts of kindness. The week also included year 7’s participating in a range of learning activities, working together to explore the concept of Community Cohesion and assemblies led by the student voice ambassadors promoted the use of community cohesion across the academy. The week was a big success and encouraged us all to reflect on the community around us.

Macmillan Coffee Morning The Big Draw STEAM’s into GSAS On 7th October the academy hosted its annual Macmillan coffee morning. It was a successful morning with great coffee and cake, thanks to staff, students and parents/carers we raised an impressive £459.97 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

On the 20th October the academy started its Big Draw festivities. This years theme was “STEAM” Bringing together Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.

Students of all ages joined forces to draw STEAM themed images resulting in enjoyable and creative lunchtime events.

Muhammad Ali & Me comes to GSAS

Charlie Folorunsho held Year 10 spellbound as he performed excerpts from Mojisola Adebayos play, 'Muhammad Ali and Me'. Muhammad Ali and Me is the critically acclaimed coming-of-age story of a young black girl growing up in foster care and her fantastical friendship with the legendary, Muhammad Ali. Charlie found time out of his busy schedule at the Albany Theatre in New Cross to come to the academy to enthral the students with exerts from the play, followed by a question and answer session. The Year 10 students were utterly absorbed and were a credit to themselves, asking some excellent questions.

GSAS Cultural Mural unveiled

Carpe diem! It’s Latin Day

At the start of this academic year GSAS started a Mural project run by Bow Arts with generous support from Allen & Overy. Artist Anita Andrews came in to work with art students from Years 10, 12 and 13. The brief was to create a series of 8 mosaic’s that reflected the cultural landscape, growing aspirations and environment of our students. Thanks to Bow Arts, Allen and Overy and Anita Andrews for helping our students to create a wonderful piece of art.

On Friday 14th October GSAS celebrated Latin Day a day dedicated to lessons and activities that make learning Latin fun and interesting! The event is used to promote enthusiasm for classics and spread awareness of the benefits of studying Latin language and Roman civilisation. Activitities included a Roman breakfast of pancakes and honey, designing mosiac patterns Roman food tasting and Latin language lessons.

Poetry in Motion for Poetry Day

Year 8 for Action Aid

Thursday 6th October was National Poetry Day, and resident writer, Mr Marsh was on site to continue his creative writing work with Years 7, 8 and 9. Students were looking at how to create a poem based on their own experiences and ambitions.

They came up with some of their most exciting poems so far. Also, at lunch time, students recited the poems they have written over the last few weeks to their peers and teachers, and Mr Messam finished off the recital with a performance of one of his own poems.

Year 8 tutor groups have been raising money for Action Aid, a charity who support the poorest women and children in the world to change their lives for good.

Our Year 8 students aim to raise the 65p per day needed to sponsor a child so they can help to ensure they have education, hop and enough to eat. Mohammad Mizan Ahmed has already raised over £80 and is hoping to encourage the GSAS community to donate as much as possible to transform a child’s life. Please help him by donating what you can.
