Bethlehem Academy’s New and Improved Workout Facility

Like all new things that involve change, there is excitement, disagreements, debating, and planning to make change happen. The changing of the weight room started off as a controversial topic, with many ideas and visions of how it should look and operate. However, after many hours of communicating with principal, staff, coaches, and the athletic director, it became clear that everyone was looking out for the best interest of the needs of the students, staff, and coaches to make the new weight room as state of the art as possible, and to allow everyone to use it to become stronger, faster, and healthier.

What’s gone – 3 single purpose heavy duty squat cages, 2 single purpose heavy duty bench presses, 1 free standing preacher curl station, 2 old and broken bench press beds, weights for the old curl station with the narrow bar, 1 declined abdominal bed with footholds, 1 machine over head press, 1 sitting knee extension machine with a bar for weights, 1 spring hip abduction/adduction machine, and 1 double purpose over head pulldown / Gloor sitting, chest pull in machine. 1 jump trainer machine with adjustable height plate What’s new Bethlehem Academy’s weight room after changes 2 dual adjustable cable machine, a four station high low jungle, 1 new treadmill, 2 new bikes, 2 phantom cycleops power bikes, 2 crank cycle arm cranks that are used for a cycleing motion for the upper body, 2 bumper plate racks, 2 complete sets of preset bars; 1 for curl bars, and 1 for straight bars, 4 half power racks, a wide variety of agility and functional training tools, ladders, mats, trx bands, and 1 vertimax.

What’s coming back – several things will be reupholstered and will reappear including hamstring curl, bench press, squat cage, back extension machine, and smith machine.

Mr. Donlon

We wanted to make sure that we have the good and safe equipment for our students to use, so that we could encourage educational health and Gitness. And through encouraging this, we could bring our P.E, athletic, and health programs to be the best they can be. We are currently working on a new layout that allows the most use and efGiciency of the current strength and cardio equipment. Moving forward we will bring in more equipment to better develop cardio Gitness, and overall Glexibility. With the new equipment in mind, it is important to note that it will not be here in the immediate future. The next wants are to get new easy to maintain Gloors, and to maximize room for the equipment we already have. The wall will eventually be torn down, which will probably happen with summer. The people beyond the wall will move into a different open place in the school, or possibly to the Mother Samuel building. Ferris wants to work with other coaches, but he will not put together a program for another sport without coach cooperation. He was currently unaware of a need for new bars, but he said that there is a potential for new weights to be purchased as soon as funds become available for them. He appreciates the patience the students have shown to a changing weight room.

Mr. Hanson

We were gifted money that can only be used on the weight room, and with this money we wanted to change our facility to model a college or pro facility. To achieve this goal we brought in new technology. The weight room will stay the way it is as far as training philosophy; we will add new strength training for secondary’s and work on complimentary body and muscle movement. As we transform the weight room and our training models, student athletes will become more successful. We are now taking the expertise of Russ, and the psychology of Dr. Ferris to build the best athletes, and teach them a lesson that will last forever. The weight room will be getting new equipment as funds are made available, and the wall will be taken down over the summer months so that the space can expand. With the wall being torn down, the people working in that ofGice will move to other empty spots in the school. An idea is to put the P.E. instructor in the weight room so that there would always be a supervisor in there. If we want to put together a school weightlifting team we will need to work with Mr. Friesen, Russ, and Dr. Ferris. The weight room is quickly changing for the better and the knowledge we have will be invaluable. We also want to teach adult classes at night. If we sit down and talk to Russ, and Dr. Ferris, the coaching staff, and the new P.E. instructor, it is interesting to guess what is going to happen.

Doctor Ferris We changed the weight room to modernize the facility and continue to improve powerlifting, while at the same time improving the efGiciency of that room. Moving forward we want to make the weight room more functional with the equipment that it already contains, and we want to make it more automated. It needs a plyometric agility Gloor, and a suspended wood Gloor, more endurance equipment, seated leg extension machines, curl machines, a pull-up/ dip machine with a counter weight, another power rack, and a hamstring curl machine. We want to make the weight room a better looking place with more mirroring, and reGinishing done on all the old equipment in there. On my Girst meeting I was told that we could take down that wall if need be. If we demonstrate effective use of the space that we already have, and we show the ability to open this up as a Gitness center for the community, then we will in order to raise funds for new equipment in there. Ultimately the location of the staff members who are currently in that ofGice is a decision to be made by the leadership staff here. The goal is to make programs for every sport with the consent of the coaches. The weight room was designed for power athletes, then taken into the Gitness and education world. Basketball was the Girst sport where the weight room was ready and the coach was cooperative over getting a program put together. Different sports need different abilities, but to develop these abilities about 75% of the equipment is shared. With that in mind there will deGinitely be outliers. For all the new equipment, we have an option of putting in there. It will just depend on meetings with the staff and coaches as to what we need, and how we are able to raise funds. I would like to thank the students, there is a good physical education culture here and moving forward it would be nice if this could branch out to areas such as the educational aspect of weightlifting. We will be looking for more ways to give P.E. and health credits, one of the plans are to have meet and greets for Minnesota personalities to raise funds for the weight room. In conclusion the athletes should be role models for getting a gift and Ginding, then working to do something with it.

Running Right out of the Gate!

The Bethlehem Academy football team is back and once again is predicted to have a memorable season.

The cardinals have plenty of experience with 15 seniors on the roaster. Bethlehem Academy came into the Wabasha Kellogg game with a chip on their shoulder. The Cardinals showed great discipline and composure in there 36-6 beat down. The varsity defense was running on all cinders and the offense was clicking together as one. The cardinal’s second game was one for the record books. Bethlehem Academy beat Blooming Prairie in the regular season for the very first time since 1995. The last time Bethlehem Academy beat Blooming Prairie during the regular season none of the players that played Friday night were even alive yet.

Softball Bethlehem Academy Softball Team Looks to Continue the Success

The Bethlehem Academy Softball team has had a tremendous amount of success so far this season. The team is currently 12-3, after beating United South Central 12-2. On top of the winning record, the Bethlehem Academy softball team is ranked number one in the Gopher Conference and also number one in the section 1A. Currently the Cardinals are ranked Eifth in the class 1A state of Minnesota.

A major key to the teams success is their experience on the Eield. Most people may think that the team would be young and unexperienced being made up of mainly sophomores and juniors with no seniors. All though the team may be young, they don't lack any experience. Most of the team have been playing at the varsity level for at least three years now. Head Coach of the Softball team, Tom Langfeldt, said, “I am so glad i have had the opportunity to coach all of these girls for so long. The chemistry on and off the Eield plays a big role in our success. it has been fun watching them grow individually and as a team.”

The three looses of the season have been to Maple River, Triton, and HayEield. The Bethlehem Academy softball team played very well against all of these teams- especially HayEield.

This game ended with the Cardinals losing 6-2. “it was a battle” said Tom Langfeldt, “all that matters is if we can get them back the second time, when it really matters.” The HayEield Softball team is ranked second in section 1A, so there is a good chance of the two teams meeting up in the postseason. The Bethlehem Academy softball team was not on top of their game offensively this game. They left too many girls on base and couldn't get the key hits when they were needed.

A season with twelve wins is considered a very good season. Some of the latest wins have been against Blooming Prairie, Goodhue, Medford, and United South Central.

“Blooming Prairie and Goodhue are always nice wins to get. It is always a good game playing both of these teams. Beating them makes it even better. Thats how you get better, playing good teams and being able to beat them is a great feeling.” said the catcher for the Bethlehem Academy softball team Grace Viland.

As the season continues, the Bethlehem Academy Softball team looks to keep continuing this success. With some key games coming up against Waterville and Randolph, the team looks to Einish their season on a high note. “It is crazy to think that the season is already almost done. So far it has been such a successful and fun season.

Im so excited to see what we can bring into the postseason.” Said catcher Grace Viland. The softball team has their last four regular season games against Waterville, New Richland, Medford, and Randolph.

Track and Field MSU Indoor Meet

Griffin Malecha 19’, Noah Battles 17’, and Zack Moreau 17’ competing at MSU

Bethlehem Academy’s track and field team recently had their first track meet of the season. It was also the team’s first time at an indoor track. The meet was hosted at Mankato State University in the Taylor Center. It involved three teams competing in the girls half and four teams competing in the boys half of the meet.

The girls placed 3rd out of the 3 teams, but hey, thats like 100% as a fraction, and everybody’s always saying to give 100% so I would say they did pretty great! The boys placed 4th out of the 4 teams, which is also 100%. More excitement came even after the team gave 100% of hard work and determination, two sophomores broke school records. Avery Hunt broke the previous triple jump record of of 41’7” by jumping 42’ 11”.Maggie Beckman, also a record breaker of the throwing discs, broke the shot-put record of 31’7.5” by throwing 31’10”. Overall the first meet was a success and it was fun to experience the indoor track.

St. Peter Meet

The Cardinal’s second track meet was at St. Peter. This was there first outdoor meet of the season. 8 teams gathered to compete. Maggie Beckman, previous record holder of the discus, broke her record once again. She broke the record by throwing 28’8.5”. Overall the girls placed 6th out of the 8 teams and the boys placed 5th out of 8. This was another successful meet to show that we were improving from their last meet at MSU.

Triton Meet

The next meet was held in Triton. Record after record seems to keep being broken each meet for the Cardinals. At this meet, senior Ana Stepaniak broke the 300 hurdles record with a time of 51. 67 seconds.

At this meet the girls took 7th place out of 8 teams and the boys took 4th out of 8. The BA Track and Field team seems to get better and better after every meet and they will continue to improve all the way through the end of the season.

Dawn of Track and Field Throughout the history of mankind, there has been a constant struggle against the natural world, and it’s supposed limitations. This is not a war that can truly be won, but that is not why humans have since the dawn of their existence done battle with it. They do it, because they want to be the best. The best among men, the best version of themselves. They want to be the very best, in the world.

Defying gravity itself, the limits of their muscles, the stone which can’t be moved, the step that can’t taken, and the feat which can’t be done, is the bread and butter of sport. Which is as primal and ancient as it is graceful and thriving among humanity to this very day.

The pinnacle of this primordial battle can only be seen at it’s very best, in the sport of track. Which culminates the very basic elements of sport into a climactic showdown between man and nature, man against man, and most importantly man against himself.

Lauren Hake 15’ High Jumping

To gain a better understanding of why we as humans feel so driven to compete amongst each other and push ourselves to new limits, one must speak with the people that best exemplify the triumphs of modern man over eternal struggles of the natural world.

Maya Schneider: The runner, the athlete, the hurricane. Maya specializes in sprinting during the track season. She loves track for it’s ability to keep one in shape for any sport. As well as it’s ability solidify the camaraderie between teammate and opponent alike.

Nick Brown: The jumper, the competitor, the javelin.

Nick’s jumping ability is unparalleled in B.A. His record being an amazing 19’1 long jump. Easily more than 3 times the length of his own body. He enjoys track purely for love of the sport, and competition, but also enjoys the relaxed nature of the events.

Sophie Kohl: The machine, the engine, the unstoppable tower of fortitude. Sophie Kohl the distance runner manages feats of unbelievable perseverance in both track and Cross country.

Truly dedicated to pushing her limits, and overcoming them. She is a model athlete and student.

Once in a life time, There comes a man who exceeds what is expected of him. While most are content to simply do good enough, and be someone they consider adequate, there are some that crave a greater achievement in life. These kinds of men are not just billionaires who’ve gone from rags to riches, or men of humble beginnings who find jobs as senators or lawyers, these kind of men can be found all around us. Doing tasks that rarely, if ever, receive the lime light. But thanks to Isaac Van Thomme’s unending struggle, and ceaseless work he has managed against all odds to rally an entire town around him, while he participates in the state tournament. The state tournament took place Saturday the 27th of February at the Xcel Energy Center.

Though Isaac did not succeed, Isaac did demonstrate an indomitable will by overcoming his first two opponents and making it into his championship match.

The state tournament is in fact the highest level of high school wrestling, with the exception of olympic participants. Even then, only 16 wrestlers participate in this event each year. Ranking Isaac as one of the higher wrestlers among the 16 best wrestlers in this state. Which is an achievement that is both rare, and inspiring.

Isaac during an interview relayed his regrets for not winning the tournament. But as there were actual olympic participants he expresses that he was not surprised that he didn’t take away a first place position. This was actually Isaac’s first year in the state tournament however, and despite his “loss” he says that he is actually very happy with himself, and he feels like he is ending his wrestling career on a high note.

It is hard not to be impressed with someone who through sheer force of will wrestled his way into the best handful of these athletes. It is not difficult to understand the feeling of achievement that comes just from participating in such an exclusive competition of athletics.

I think that everyone in B.A. Even Faribault high school, is proud to call Isaac Van Thomme one of their own.

Faribault Girls Hockey

The Faribault Falcons girls hockey team has had a very successful and fast moving season so far. The girls hockey team had a very strong start to the season staying undefeated with a record of 8-0-2 until they ran into one of their biggest rivals, the Owatonna Huskies. Faribault played a good game against the Huskies and had a tough loss with a score of 2-0. The Flacons have walked away with wins against big named schools which is a reason they are number one in the Big Nine Conference right now. The Falcons hockey team has had successful wins against all three big named Rochester teams; Rochester Mayo, Rochester Century, and Rochester John Marshall.

Rochester John Marshall is a very strong team and the Falcons pulled away with a 2-1 win against them. It was a huge win for them especially due to the fact that it was a four point game. It gave the Falcons a huge boost and improved their top of the conference score to a total of 24.

The Falcons are at the top, but Red Wing is close behind with a total of 22 points. The Falcons will encounter Red Wing towards the end of the month on January 19. It will be a tough game against the Red Wing Wingers, but if the Falcons continue to play like they have been lately, playing three strong full periods of hockey they will have a good chance for a successful game against them. Before they start worrying about Red Wing, they need to take each game one by one.

Although Red Wing is a big game, they need to win the others before worrying about the bigger games. Every game is important and the Falcons have done a good job in staying confident in themselves throughout each and every game.

The Falcons hockey team participated in a holiday tournament over the Christmas break.

They played the number six rated team in the State, Proctor Hermantown for their first game on Monday, December 28. The Falcons were not quite ready for the high speed and aggressiveness that the other team played. They were not used to that type of play which resulted in a 5-0 loss. Their next game was against Burnsville on Tuesday. The girls played a very strong and well rounded game against Burnsville. It wasn’t quite enough, the Falcons had a hard loss of 2-1 in overtime. Burnsville was a very strong and very aggressive, similar to Proctor Hermantown. The Falcons were a little more prepared for the type of game that they were playing which really benefited them to play a better game against Burnsville and their last game of the tournament against Minneapolis. The Falcons dominated the full game against the Minneapolis Novas and took home a 6-2 win. Participating in the holiday tournament and playing against the faster and more aggressive teams will benefit the Falcons and prepare them for their next tough couple contests against teams like Owatonna, Red Wing, and Northfield. The girls have a tough schedule coming up towards the end of the month and are looking forward to seeing the outcomes and are planning to keep their spot at the top of the Big Nine Conference.

ISSUE NUMBER 1

It was a big weekend for Bethlehem Academy, the 6th annual Heroes for Hope run/walk took place at the fairgrounds on Saturday April 9th. The run helps promote three local organizations who advocate for women, children, and families: the Rice County Hope Center, Ruth’s House of Hope, and Whispers of Hope. Bethlehem Academy decided to promote these organizations because they have missions that aligned very closely with BA’s own mission. This event also serves as a fundraiser that helps support everything that happens and is needed at BA. Mr. Boelter, who organizes this event, described that Saturday, as a very brisk morning, and there was about 265 participants. Also, that evening Bethlehem Academy held their 32nd BABS Night (Bethlehem Academy Backers and Supporters). This fundraiser has a similar purpose. Boetler said, “We are so unbelievably blessed to raise over $140,000 from all of our BABS activities this year, and that is a record.” He also said that the benefactors are huge supporters and are beyond committed to making the education here available for many years to come. Some of the big auction items this year were, two-week vacations to Big Sky Country Montana, a horse-drawn sleigh that was restored by Beau Reuvers: a senior (200 hours of his labor committed to this), numerous amounts of Twins and Timberwolves ticket packages.In addition to the auction and games, there were many raffles and a record-smashing Fund-A-Need auction in the middle of the live auction. “It was a great night!” Boelter says.

HALLOWEEN TRICK OR TREATING AT BA Haunted Houses, Trick or Treating, Parties, Bonfires, Carving Pumpkins, and watching Scary Movies are traditional Halloween festivities.Halloween is the one time of year that both kids and adults get to dress up as their favorite superhero, Disney Princess, animals, etc. This year BA and DMCS had many ghoulish activities to celebrate Halloween!

DMCS Students Trick or Treating at BA It has been a tradition at BA to have the preschool and day care kids from Divine Mercy come tour BA going from classroom to classroom to receive treats and show off their Halloween Costumes. This year we are expecting 53 preschool kids 9 daycare kids. They will be coming Friday morning after mass at 9:45 following the NHS inductee ceremony. It is always super fun to see the creative costumes the little kids have on. Having the little kids come to BA is always fun because it’s a neat experience for them to see what BA is like and see the older kids. Also, SADD members went over to DMCS to hand out candy to the little kids, and talk about being safe while trick or treating.

Trunk or Treat The special trick or treating event was held on Halloween at Bethlehem Academy parking lot. This was a safe way to get the little kids trick or treating. It was the first year Bethlehem Academy hosted this event, and it was a great success! There were 29 trunks both within BA and outside from the community, like, BA football, key club and NHS; the firefighters, sheriffs department, and Knight of Columbus. There were 600 hotdog meals served, and it is estimated that over 1000 children came. Without Mr. Donlon and Mrs. Seidel’s help, this wouldn't have been such a successful event!

Spooktacular 5K run/walk This event was held on Saturday October 24, 2015 at 8am at DMCS. This was a good way for the DMCS community to get out and to help support DMCS in there halloween costumes!

Lizzy Sauer

Brynn Whitten

This week we interviewed sophomore Elizabeth Sauer.

Elizabeth, or Lizzy, has only been at BA since for a little over a year now. Since she came, she has been involved in many activities, including soccer, basketball, track, and Key Club. Lizzy says she really enjoys all of her classes this semester, but her favorite would have to be painting. She likes painting because there are no rules - you are free to be as creative as you want and paint whatever you feel like painting. I also asked Lizzy who her favorite teacher was. She responded, “My favorite teacher is probably Mrs. Seidel because she always manages to make class fun.” Next, Montana asked Lizzy what she liked to do during her free time, when she doesn’t have school work to do, sports practices to go to, or volunteer hours to complete.

She said she mainly likes to watch Netflix and sleep. I asked what specific kind of shows of on Netflix, and Lizzy said she is currently watching Daredevil and The Office. We are glad you’re here Lizzy, good luck and have fun with the rest of the school year!

For a middle schooler this week, Montana and I decided to interview eighth grader Brynn Whitten. Brynn has been at BA now and after this year it will be three. We started off the interview by asking her a little bit more about school and her classes. Brynn said her favorite class was science because her class gets to do a lot of fun and hands-on experiments. I asked her who her favorite teacher was, and she responded, “My favorite teacher is Mrs. Smisek, because she is just super nice and seems to understand all of us.” Besides school, Brynn also participates in dance. She is on the varsity Faribault Emeralds Dance Team. Next, Montana asked Brynn what she liked to do during her free time, when she doesn’t have school work to do or dance practices to go to. She said she likes to hang out with her friends, and her favorite show on Netflix is the Vampire Diaries. Brynn also likes to watch volleyball, college dance, and just dance in general. We are glad you’re here Brynn, good luck and have fun with the rest of the school year!

Katie Seidel This week we sat down with Katie Seidel, daughter of former staff member here at Bethlehem Academy; Mrs. Seidel. Since she’s in 6th grade this year coming over from DMCS we though tit was only appropriate to discuss what her favorite class was. “Religion, because Mr. Wagner is really nice, funny and he also gets the job done.” Both Makayla and I haven’t had Mr. Wagner as a teacher since this is his first year teaching and he only teaches the middle school but we took her word for it. This got us into the subject of what she would want to be when she grows up, (as of now) since her mother is a teacher, we assumed she’d want to follow in her footsteps. Although, we were wrong she said she would want to be a mother of 2 or a professional WNBA star player. Very achievable goals so best of luck to Katie because we know one day she’ll be well known. Since we didn't know Katie very well going into this interview we decided to ask her more of a basic question which was, what was something that not many people knew about her. She thought for a second then got really excited to tell us a story. Makayla and I listened in very carefully, apparently when Katie was a newborn she had a tumor in her brain. If Mrs. Seidel wouldn’t have spotted it she’s not sure she would be alive at all today. We are very thankful it was spotted because Katie is a very joyful girl.

Kyle Kohl We also sat down with Kyle Kohl, a freshman here at Bethlehem Academy.

During the interview we asked him what’s something that not very many people know about him. He mentioned that half of the sneezes that you may hear at school come mainly from him. This made both Makayla and I laugh pretty hard but when we managed to recollect ourselves we asked Kyle what his favorite subject was in school and why.

He told us that science was intriguing to him because it is always changing and he wants to make discoveries. Our last questions that we asked Kyle during our interview was what he wanted to be when he grew up (as of now) and why. Kyle mentioned that he was really looking forwards to basketball season this coming year now that he’s a freshman he’ll be able to play on C-squad hopefully JV. That tied into what he wanted to be when he grew up which was a basketball coach because “it would be cool being a coach for a big organization.” He added in that he will most likely just end up being a funeral director like his dad. Keep up the good work and have a great freshman year.

GET TO KNOW A TEACHER

Get to know Mr. Zabel A lot of students here at Bethlehem Academy take some sort of science class. Many have Mrs. McMillian as a science teacher, while many others have Mr. Zabel.

Mr. Zabel was born on May 14th, 1986. He went to elementary school at CCS (Consolidated Catholic School), which has now become DMCS (Divine Mercy Catholic School).

After going through grade six at CCS, he then went to Bethlehem Academy and graduated with the class of 2005.

After graduating from BA, Mr. Zabel decided to continue his learning career at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. While studying in Duluth, he focused mostly on science, and more specifically biology. He majored in biology with a teaching licensure.

Many people would be curious t0 see why some people would want to become a teacher. I asked Mr. Zabel what influenced him to become a teacher, and he replied saying, “I have always had a passion for science and learning”, and he also said “what confirmed that i wanted to pursue a career in teaching was my College Anatomy and Physiology class with Dr. Cizadlo or Doc ‘C’, his class introduced the flip classroom idea and inspired me to flip my classroom.” After taking Dr. Cizadlo’s Anatomy and Physiology course, Mr. Zabel became a tutor for Anatomy and Physiology and he said, “(I) very quickly realized that teaching was the path that I needed to pursue.

I have heard that many teachers have enjoyed teaching here at BA, and when I asked Mr. Zabel what the greatest thing about teaching at BA was, he responded saying, “The greatest thing about teaching at BA is being able to come to work and to inspire students to learn, and to see them become as excited about science as I am.”

He enjoys “being in a small school in the sense that I get to see students grow from one year to the next and develop relationships with them, rather than only having them for one year and never seeing them again.” He even sees some students in 10th grade biology, 11th grade field biology, and then again in 12th grade anatomy and physiology. He also said, “I really enjoy teaching the CIS College in the Schools Anatomy and Physiology course where I get to challenge the students to think and to help them guide them in their future plans after high school.”

Teaching can become hard at times, and Mr. Zabel says the hardest part for him is, “trying to manage all of my classes and knowing there is many things we as a class can be doing, but not enough time to cover it all.” He said, “It is always difficult to say good bye at the end of the year to the senior class”, and “having some students for three years in a row and developing a relationship with them and then having to say good bye and knowing you wouldn't see them again in your classroom is always a challenge.”

Our school should be so thankful that we have such a great teacher to provide us with a ton of knowledge and love for science.

GET TO KNOW A TEACHER

Get to know Ms. Seidel Many students have Ms. Seidel as a teacher here at Bethlehem Academy. This week, I interviewed her to get to know her more as a person.

Ms. Seidel graduated from Carroll High School in Yakima, Washington, in 1986. She says, “Yikes, I am celebrating my 30 year class reunion!!!! WOW! that sounds like I am really old.” Ms. Seidel received a bachelors of science in Secondary Education and Bachelors of Arts in English Literature and and her masters of Science in Curriculum from Franciscan University of Steubenville in Steubenville Ohio. She will graduate from the Bishop Harry J. Flynn Catechetical Institute with a certificate in Catholic Chatacetics on May 10th, she is “excited about that”.

Now more about her as a teacher. Ms. Seidel has taught at Steubenville High School in Ohio and has also taught at Franciscan University of Steubenville as an Adjunct Professor of English and the Dramatic Arts at the Gaming, campus in Austria. When I asked Ms. Seidel what influenced her to become a teacher, she replied saying, “Ever since I could remember all I wanted to be was a teacher and a mother. My mom told me when I was little I played ‘school’ and would make my brother Joey be the student in class.” She, “always gave him lots of homework and told him I would not ride bikes with him until his ‘homework’ was turned in.”

Ms. Seidel really loves teaching and really loves her students. She says that, “graduation week is the hardest week because I know the seniors are ready to go, but I am not always ready to say goodbye.” She is still in contact with some of her past students that are now all grown up and have children of their own. She also says that BA has been the best school for her. She has a lot of respect for her colleagues and she knows that she has the support if the families of the students that she teaches. She says, “I consider it an honor to teach my students here and enjoy teaching the siblings of those students that have gone before them.” Like I said, Ms. Seidel really loves teaching, she has had times when some students do not believe they can graduate. But then watching those students walk across the stage on graduation day, it has made her so proud.

If Ms. Seidel was talking to a new teacher, she would tell them “do not be afraid to say, ‘I don't know the answer to that’, sometimes teachers think they need to know it all. Here is the secret… We do not!” The second piece she would tell them is to “teach with love. I know it sounds simple, but that is what St. Theresa of Calcutta told us to do. ‘Do little things with great love’.”

Ms. Seidel is an amazing teacher at this school, and we are so lucky to have her here. She wants students to know that they should always try, “you may surprise yourself with your abilities. Always try” - Ms. Seidel.

LEARNING CHECKPOINT Educational Step Ladder Checkup

Joshua Bohner, a freshman BA Star article staff member, was asked to give a article about what he had learned in his classes on the week of October 26 - October 29. He has a wide spectrum of classes to attend: Band, Geometry, Chemistry, Citizenship and Government, English 9, Physical education, and Multimedia. He has a tight schedule, and an increased amount of work from middle school, but so far he has a good GPA for the first semester compared to the average freshman.

The first class Joshua told us about was Geometry. Mrs. Jandro uses a classroom method called a “flipped classroom”, which means you learn the lessons at home through podcasts that Mrs. Jandro posts to a site called Sophia. Then, when you come to class, we correct our homework and gives our scores, and then Mrs. Jandro helps us review the lesson by giving us practice problems.

Then we get our homework and have the rest of the class to work on it. Joshua learned on Tuesday about “Triangle Theorems”, which means methods to solve different triangle problems using postulates and theorems. He did well on the assignment, and the next day he learned about Quadrilaterals, such as parallelograms, Kites, Trapezoids, and Trapeziums.

Next, Joshua told us about his experience in Chemistry.

He recently had a test and he thinks he did well on it. The test was about compounds, mixtures, elements, and pure substances. He studied all the vocabulary words and went over the little things in the chapter that were important.

Overall, he did well on all the review assignments as well.

After that, he mentioned that he was doing well in Citizenship and Government. In Citizenship and Government, he is learning about the U.S. government and its functions, as well as the powers restrained by the constitution. He currently worked on an assignment about congressional committees. He chose the Environment and Public Works committee.

LEARNING CHECKPOINT Many people in Bethlehem Academy do not know what other students are doing in classes or what teachers are even teaching. This week I am going to give an overview of what I am doing in my classes. Since we are a Catholic School, religion is one of the classes that people hear about the most. But what people do not know is how in depth we go in our religion classes. I am in Christology taught by Mr. McGurran.

Right now we are talking about the Lord’s prayer going in depth in what it means and what God is trying to say to us. We say the Lord’s prayer at mass or everyday. God taught us to pray because our actions conform to His will. In American History one big thing that I am learning about Compromise of 1850. Mr. Madden said that the Compromise of 1850 was a series of congressional measures intended to settle the major disagreement between free states and slaves states.

During this time there was a book written called Uncle Tom’s Cabin. It was written about anti-slavery. There were many people who could not decide about what should happen, so Kallie Donahue 17’ working on the Compromise helped. I am in Mrs. math problems in Mr.s Jandro’s Seidel’s reading and writing class. We just got done with our IRP papers. I read this amazing book called Tuesdays with Morrie. This book is about a man who gets ALS and one of his old students comes and talks to him. He ends up dying, but thoughout the book there are many wonderful life lessons to be learned. Chemistry is a class taught by Mrs. McMillan. We just got done writing a Density Lab report. This report was about determining and comparing the densities of the two liquids and an unknown solid from mass and volume. The unknown solid that I was given ended up being Copper, with a density of 8.96 g/cm^3. One to one Functions and their inverses. If that does not sound like math I do not know what does. A one to one function is when both the vertical line test and the horizontal line test are true. My last class is painting taught my Students working on physics Mr. Hillesheim. In painting currently we are starting our own problems in Mr. McMillan’s room painting. We get to pick any subject matter and create it. Through all of my classes I have been learning many things that have helped in my other classes, and not just that class. I am very thankful to be able to get such a wonderful education at Bethlehem Academy.

BA’s Economics classes gets a feel for stocks in Virtual Stock Exchange Game.

A recent unit in the Economics classes at BA have been focusing on money.

The focus is the different types of money, how it is used, why certain mediums are used as money, and how money is used in the economy. One of these uses in the economy is stocks.

Mr. Madden and Mr. Hansen set up a Virtual Stock Exchange game on marketwatch.com that reflects what the stocks actually are for a given company. However, the stock quotes are delayed by a certain amount.

Any company that sells stock can be found if the trading symbol is known. The trading symbol is what is publicly used to identify traded shares of a particular stock. For example, Facebook’s trading symbol is FB. Say you want to buy stock. Well, the stock market is a giant risk game. You have to buy the right stock at the right price at the right time. Lets’s say this: A company is at it’s all time low over a 52 week (1 year) period. If the zig-zag going downward is suddenly cut off by a sudden stabilization period, it may be the time to buy, If the zigzag is going up or near the top of previous zigzags, it is not time to buy that particular stock. “It sucks” Says Olivia Nass, “It’s really difficult to find out what stocks are doing well and the ones that aren’t.”

The game stars with a budget of $100,000 and the goal is to have the highest net worth. When the price of a stock goes higher than what you bought it for, your returns go up. This gets you net worth.

Currently, Chloe Kohl is in first place with a net worth of $390,119.80. Camryn Shultz is very close behind with $341,195.42. “It is Middle Right: Stocks trending in the really realistic and interesting” Says Camryn Shultz, “To get to the top, I news that are most likely up for grabs just bought the right stock at the right time. There is really no strategy to for investors. it.”
