BA volleyball finishes second in state!

The volleyball team has a lot to celebrate. They may not have finished first, but they finished off the season strong with a trip to state and falling just short of the title.

Recap With the first seed in the State tournament, the cardinals looked to be the big dog in the house. They played against Cook County in the first matchup. It seemed like BA managed the whole game from the first serve on. They went on to win the game 3-0. The cards then faced the talented Heritage Christian Academy, another christian school. This was a tougher matchup for the cardinals, but yet again, the cards held on for a 3-0 win. The cardinals ironically matched up with the number two seed WEM, who they beat 3-0 earlier in the season. WEM came storming out of the gates, winning the first two sets. BA went on to win the next two sets, and the game was tied. During the last set, it seemed as if BA might pull of another state title win, but came just short by two points.

Awards Apart from not winning state, the cardinals did have three All-State players in Senior Madi Strodtman, Junior Payton Nutter, and Sophomore Mary Campbell.

Madi Strodtman will be playing college volleyball at Southwest Minnesota state next year.

Fan section It is also Important to mention the outstanding fan section that has been cheering on our girls all year.

This year at the state tournament, they were dressed up in all white on Thursday, construction themed on Friday, and Firefighters on Saturday. We hope to see another state bound team and fan section next year.

STATE REGARDS Franz Boelter Makes a Motivational Statement for BA

With WEM playing a well fought game to win the championship against the BA volleyball team in last Saturday’s championship game, BA got runner-up in the tournament. With regards to how well BA played throughout the tournament, Franz Boelter, the head coach, posted a Facebook message about how well the team played and how many teams try to win at this challenging event. “I can’t say enough about this great group of young ladies! At the beginning of the season they were the defending Class A State Champions, and from the first poll until the last, they were ranked as the #1 Class A team in the state. That means that, with a bullseye on their back, every team they played this season gave them their best shot. They were then seeded #1 at the State Tournament and stayed #1 until the absolute last possible second of this season, at which point they fell 2 points short of repeating as State Champs. SO many teams would love to be State Runner-up! That wasn’t this team’s goal, but as the old saying goes, if you reach for the stars you may not get one, but you won’t get a hand full of mud either. Congrats on another fantastic season and a great journey, ladies! You are loved!” - Franz Boelter, Facebook message.

Mr. Boelter also says that throughout this season, the players were committed to getting better every day, and are very happy with their attitude and effort from the first day of practice all of the way through that state championship match. Even though we lost, Our season will never be defined by the destination at the end. It will always be defined by the effort and attitude along the journey that leads us from the beginning to the end.

BETHLEHEM ACADEMY NEWS MR. Friesen & Mr. Hanson serve lunch at WEM During the State volleyball game there was a bet between the two gopher conference teams. Mr. Friesen and Mr. Hanson bet Mr. Boran the WEM AD and Mr. Kaplan the WEM principal that the losers have to go and serve lunch at the winners school. We then asked Mr. Hanson how they came up with this bet and he said “to show our appreciation of a connection between our conference, our schools and our great young ladies, who happen to be volleyball players. The Athletic Director’s bet each other before the match. I bet there principal before game five during the Prep 45 Broadcast.” We then asked when they plan on going through with the bet and they agreed on sometime after thanksgiving break. Then finally asked how he felt about having to actually serve lunch at WEM and he said “I feel great serving lunch anywhere. The State Tournament was an Epic battle between high school volleyball players from the same Conference and that almost never happens in State Competition. Plus, Win or Lose we want to always want to show the best sportsmanship and that was the sole purpose of the bet to show that we as Gopher Conference schools have the best sportsmanship and our volleyball players are important to us.”

Mr. Friesen said “I am the reason we lost the championship game” In an interview he admitted to having bad luck and being the reason for the loss. He said that serving lunch there will be very depressing and that he will not enjoy it at all. They don’t have a date yet but it will be sometime after thanksgiving break. Boran wants to call the news station and get them there. it is a good healthy rivalry between these two gopher conference rivals. !!

BETHLEHEM ACADEMY NEWS The$Bethlehem$Academy$volleyball$team$par3cipated$in$the$ State$tournament.$The$Cardinals$won$their$first$two$games$ earning$them$a$spot$in$the$state$championship.$$At$the$ championship$the$stands$were$filled$with$students,$parents,$ and$many$other$people.$For$some$a@ending$it$was$a$3me$of$ reminiscing.$Many$Alumni$came$to$watch$that$day,$and$most$of$them$played$volleyball$in$ high$school.$It$brought$back$many$good$memories$of$playing$in$the$Xcel$energy$center$ themselves.$ $ For$some$being$back$in$the$Xcel$was$a$weird$experience.$It$was$different$being$in$the$ stands$and$not$on$the$court.$Alumni$Teddy$Campbell$(Class$of$ 2015)$watched$on$and$cheered$for$the$Lady$Cards.$Teddy$ said$that$many$of$her$experiences$in$BA$volleyball$have$ prepared$her$for$college.$Cardinal$volleyball$has$helped$ many$Alumni$with$situa3ons$in$college.$It$has$helped$people$ to$understand$what$they$can$achieve$if$they$really$want$it.$ Some$of$the$most$valuable$life$lessons$to$volleyball$alum$ were$learned$through$hardships$when$they$played$ volleyball.$One$of$the$most$valuable$lessons$Bethlehem$ Academy$volleyball$has$taught$many$people$is$that$everyone$ has$an$equally$important$part$of$the$team.$ $ Some$Alumni$have$gone$on$and$con3nued$to$play$ 2014 State Tournament volleyball$on$a$higher$level.$Lauren$Ma@hews,$Payton$ Schultz,$and$Mikayla$Grossman$are$just$the$class$of$2015$graduates$that$have$gone$on$to$ play$volleyball$in$college.$These$alumni$use$many$social$skills$learned$in$high$school$and$ apply$it$to$their$college$experiences.$ $ Alumni$Teddy$Campbell$does$not$play$for$a$college$team,$but$she$s3ll$plays$volleyball$ in$her$spare$3me$in$open$gyms$between$studying$and$hanging$out$with$friends$to$play$ volleyball.$It$was$a$fun$and$easy$way$to$make$friends$with$similar$interests.$She$misses$being$ able$to$be$a$part$of$a$team$and$have$a$group$of$girls$you$know$will$always$be$there$for$you.$$ $ All$volleyball$alumni$share$one$thing$in$common$though;$they$all$s3ll$have$a$great$ love$for$the$program$and$all$the$girls$involved.$So,$being$back$in$the$Xcel$Center$was$a$great$ opportunity$for$both$current$and$future$Alumni$of$the$Bethlehem$Academy$volleyball$team.$

Bethlehem Academy’s New and Improved Workout Facility

Like%all%new%things%that%involve%change,%there%is% excitement,%disagreements,%debating,%and%planning%to% make%change%happen.%The%changing%of%the%weight% room%started%off%as%a%controversial%topic,%with%many% ideas%and%visions%of%how%it%should%look%and%operate.% However,%after%many%hours%of%communicating%with% principal,%staff,%coaches,%and%the%athletic%director,%it% became%clear%that%everyone%was%looking%out%for%the% best%interest%of%the%needs%of%the%students,%staff,%and% coaches%to%make%the%new%weight%room%as%state%of%the% art%as%possible,%and%to%allow%everyone%to%use%it%to% become%stronger,%faster,%and%healthier.%%

We%were%gifted%money%that%can%only%be%used%on%the%weight%room,%and%with%this%money%we%wanted%to%change%our% facility%to%model%a%college%or%pro%facility.%To%achieve%this%goal%we%brought%in%new%technology.%The%weight%room%will% stay%the%way%it%is%as%far%as%training%philosophy;%we%will%add%new%strength%training%for%secondary’s%and%work%on% complimentary%body%and%muscle%movement.%%As%we%transform%the%weight%room%and%our%training%models,%student% athletes%will%become%more%successful.%We%are%now%taking%the%expertise%of%Russ,%and%the%psychology%of%Dr.%Ferris% to%build%the%best%athletes,%and%teach%them%a%lesson%that%will%last%forever.%The%weight%room%will%be%getting%new% equipment%as%funds%are%made%available,%and%the%wall%will%be%taken%down%over%the%summer%months%so%that%the% space%can%expand.%With%the%wall%being%torn%down,%the%people%working%in%that%ofGice%will%move%to%other%empty% spots%in%the%school.%An%idea%is%to%put%the%P.E.%instructor%in%the%weight%room%so%that%there%would%always%be%a% supervisor%in%there.%If%we%want%to%put%together%a%school%weightlifting%team%we%will%need%to%work%with%Mr.%Friesen,% Russ,%and%Dr.%Ferris.%The%weight%room%is%quickly%changing%for%the%better%and%the%knowledge%we%have%will%be% invaluable.%We%also%want%to%teach%adult%classes%at%night.%If%we%sit%down%and%talk%to%Russ,%and%Dr.%Ferris,%the% coaching%staff,%and%the%new%P.E.%instructor,%it%is%interesting%to%guess%what%is%going%to%happen.

Molly Healy For a middle schooler, we interviewed Molly Healy.

Younger sister of Ryan and John Healy who happens to be a senior this year. Since Makayla and I know John Healy relatively well, we decided to have her share what her favorite activity to do with her family is.

“I really enjoy when my family goes out to the movies because there’s food, entertainment and no fighting.”

We all agreed that family can be a pain sometimes but it is very important to each one of us. I then asked Molly an example of a rule she dislikes at home that she would change. She mentioned how she doesn’t like having to go to bed at 10 because she has a lot to do. Makayla and I both agreed on this, there just aren’t enough hours in the day.

From here on, we began by asking a more school related question to break the ice. She mentioned that some of her accomplishments this year is to have all A’s and not have the same drama she did last year. Best wishes to Molly on her last middle school year, have a fabulous school year!

Caitlin Lipinski For a high schooler this week we interviewed Caitlin Lipinski, former freshman here at B.A. Younger sister of Connor Lipinski who is a senior this year. Before our interview with Cait, Makayla and I had been talking about how much of a pain it must be to clean her room, only because it’s so much to put away. Cait pitched in and mentioned that her family has a rule that forces her to clean her room once a week.

“Sometimes I enjoy having a messy room because putting stuff away after school can sometimes be a drag. Cleaning my room up is definitely a daylong commitment.”

Makayla nor I could have put it any other way, we definitely agreed. Something that could make this easier that Cait suggested would be a machine that creates your own outfits. “it can be very stressful having to think about what you’re going to wear to certain places or events.”

We all agreed that school outfits with a dress code enforced does not make it any better. This got us to the topic of school, we asked what she would like to accomplish. She mentioned that having straight A’s is always a goal because there’s nothing better than seeing all the hard work you put in to getting that letter grade. Abby Jandro This week we sat down with 6th grader Abby Jandro. We asked her a few questions about the changes from DMCS to BA. She said “no uniforms, lockers, no recess (sadly), and laptops, but the biggest change is trying to be class on time. “It was hard getting used to it at the beginning of the year, but now I have the hang of it.” We also asked her what sports she played, and she said “I am in volleyball, and I was in basketball and I miss it a lot. I love volleyball so much, I had a great coach this fall and I got play with my friends, which was really fun.” Her and Abby Strodtman have something in common. We asked both of them what celebrity they would want to spend a day with and they both said Taylor Swift. Faith and I haven't personally met Mr.Wagner, the new religion teacher but we heard that he is the favorite teacher of most of the middle schoolers. Abby said Mr. Wagner was her favorite also, “I love going to his class because he makes class fun, he teaches Japanese words, and tells us lots of stories.” Lastly, we asked her what her favorite thing about the school year is and she said this. “I love getting the chance to meet all the new kids who come from other schools. It has been a blast getting to know them!” Faith and I hope you have an awesome 6th grade year, and we are wishing you the best!

Abby Strodtman We also sat down with Abby Strodtman a freshman. We asked her questions about her year at BA so far. She transferred from Medford at the end of last year and so we decided to ask her what has been the biggest change from coming to BA from Medford. She said, “everyone at BA looks out for one another. Also, the teachers care a lot about how you're doing in their class and try to help you as much as they can. There is also a lot more school spirit and pride at BA rather than Medford, which I really like. I know my family and I are much happier at BA.” She is involved in three sports at BA, volleyball, basketball and runs track. “I would have to say my favorite sport is basketball, especially since we are in the beginning of the season. I really like the team bonding we do and our practices have been really fun and I love the girls on my team and I see this being a really good year for BA girls basketball.” Lastly, we talked to her about her teachers, and she said her favorite is Mrs. Phiel. “I like the way she teaches and I look forward going to her class everyday.” We hope you have a fantastic freshman year Abby!

ISSUE NUMBER 1

LEARNING CHECKPOINT Many people in Bethlehem Academy do not know what other students are doing in classes or what teachers are even teaching. This week I am going to give an overview of what I am doing in my classes.

Since we are a Catholic School, religion is one of the classes that people hear about the most. But what people do not know is how in depth we go in our religion classes. I am in Christology taught by Mr. McGurran. Right now we are talking about the Lord’s prayer going in depth in what it means and what God is trying to say to us. We say the Lord’s prayer at mass or everyday. God taught us to pray because our actions conform to His will. In American History one big thing that I am learning about Compromise of 1850. Mr. Madden said that the Compromise of 1850 was a series of congressional measures intended to settle the major disagreement between free states and slaves states. During this time there was a book written called Uncle Tom’s Cabin. It was written about antislavery. There were many people who could not decide about what should happen, so the Compromise helped. I am in Mrs. Seidel’s reading and writing class. We just got done with our IRP papers. I read this amazing book called Tuesdays with Morrie. This book is about a man who gets ALS and one of his old students comes and talks to him. He ends up dying, but thoughout the book there are many wonderful life lessons to be learned. Chemistry is a class taught by Mrs. McMillan. We just got done writing a Density Lab report. This report was about determining and comparing the densities of the two liquids and an unknown solid from mass and volume. The unknown solid that I was given ended up being Copper, with a density of 8.96 g/cm^3.

One to one Functions and their inverses. If that does not sound like math I do not know what does. A one to one function is when both the vertical line test and the horizontal line test are true. My last class is painting taught my Mr. Hillesheim. In painting currently we are starting our own painting. We get to pick any subject matter and create it. Through all of my classes I have been learning many things that have helped in my other classes, and not just that class. I am very thankful to be able to get such a wonderful education at Bethlehem Academy.

Republican Presidential Race 2016 The 2016 race for President started on Thursday, August 6, 2015, when the republicans appeared on Fox news channel. The democrats had their first debate on Tuesday, October 13, 2015, a bit later than the first republican debate. Currently, the candidates for the republican party are Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, Jim Gilmore, Lindsey Graham, Mike Huckabee, Bobby Jindal, John Kasich, George Pataki, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Rick Santorum, and Donald Trump. The candidates for the democratic party are Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley, and Bernie Sanders. The current front runners of the election are Donald Trump (Republican) and Ben Carson (Republican). Both Donald Trump and Ben Carson have strong beliefs they feel will help change eight years the nation had from the reign of Obama. Ben Carson Believes Muslims should be disqualified from the presidency, that the Holocaust could've been averted if only the Jews had been armed and that abortion is like slavery. Carson also uses the slavery analogy to attack Obamacare.

The Attacks On Friday evening, November 13, 2015, France was attacked at six different locations throughout Paris. The people who planned these attacks were a group of terrorists who later admitted to be ISIS. A concert hall, Stade de France, and at least two restaurants were attacked. It was said to be planned in Syria and organized in Belgium, French, and the terrorists rented an apartment in Bobigny for a week before they launched Friday's series of shootings and explosions. 129 people died, and at least 352 people were wounded, 99 of them in critical care. 7 terrorists were killed, and the rest were arrested. France has intensified its air campaign against Islamic State targets in Syria. 10 French fighter jets dropped 20 bombs on ISIS facilities in Syria, including a command and recruitment center and a training camp. The French defense ministry says the strike's objectives were achieved.

The Reactions

The Eiffel Tower lit up in Paris Monday in the colors of the French flag. Other landmarks around the world have done the same in a showing of solidarity. François Hollande, the President of France, declared a state of emergency across France, which lets authorities limit people's movements and impose zones of security and protection. Hollande would like to see his country's state of emergency in place for three months, and he proposed measures that would allow France to deport suspected terrorists or strip them of their citizenship, even if they were born in the country. The French government also announced tightened border controls, and and ordered 1,500 military troops to join already increased security forces.

Around the World United States President Barack Obama is calling the attacks on Paris "outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians" and is vowing to do whatever it takes to help bring the perpetrators to justice. He called the attacks a "heartbreaking situation" and an "attack on all of humanity.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she is "deeply shaken by the news and pictures that are reaching us from Paris.” British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Twitter: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the French people. We will do whatever we can to help.” The United States stands in solidarity with France, as it has stood with us so often in the past. Obama states that he will do everything within his power to assist and help France.
