The volleyball season for the Bethlehem Academy Cardinals is going on strong. Senior Madi Strodtman is very happy with how the season in going. “I think that the season is going very well so far.” she said after the sub-section semi-final against Lyle-Pacelli. One of the biggest struggles for the team so far has been staying healthy and injury free. Ankles, shoulders and back injuries, and even the common cold have not been enough to stop the Lady Cards. The cardinals are two matches away from getting to the state tournament. The Cardinals play on Thursday against Hayfield at the Rochester Civic Center.

Boys soccer has been doing very good this season. They are 11-5 and have won their first 4 section games. their next game is gong to bed Wednesday November 4th at five in St. Cloud against Orono. two sophomore at Bethlehem academy play on the Faribault boys soccer team- Josiah Hoisington and Drew Larson. We asked Drew how their season was going, he said “the season is better than they could hope and it has been a lot of fun playing and he hopes they continue to do good until the end. We asked Josiah what it was like for him to play in the snow, he said “it was not very fun and it was really cold and the worst part wad that the ball was hard to control” We also asked how he was enjoying the season, his said “yes he is very much and he is happy that he get to be apart of such a historic year and couldn't ask for a better team to play with.

We asked Mr. Hanson if he thought the 2015 football season exceeded his expectation and he said “I’m very proud of all the boys and what they accomplished, even though it was a heart break to loose but it shows you that all games are though.” He went on to say “we were very proud of what we accomplished and its all due to the hard work the boys put in day in and day out, and all their success can from each other. They finished the season 10-2. Mr Hanson’s favorite part of the season was winning the homecoming game by so much or winning the section game. The expectations do not change for next year. They will have many returning players. So it should be another exciting season!

Girls swimming has recently been doing very well this year. They have won many meets that were not in their favor to win. They have broken a record at their pool. Ana Ana Stepaniak said “Well it was my first time breaking a records so it was really cool. Also there was a volleyball game going on and the fan section left there game and came to watch us.” Swimming has many seniors this year so they are making the best of every meet. Be Bresnahan, a part of the varsity swimming team, said “I am looking forward to al the big meets and hopefully many of us can make it to state.”

VOLLEYBALL BA Volleyball Gearing Up for Playoffs With being 19-7, the Bethlehem Academy Girls Volleyball team is preparing for a new season: playoffs. Playoffs began on Thursday October 29th for the girls in which they swept Southland in 3 sets. During this match, Payton Nutter got her 1,000 kill. She was presented with two plaques on Thursday, one for her 1,000 kill and the other for her 1,000 assist. This match was just a warm-up for what’s yet to come for the team. The cardinals have been preparing and waiting all season for playoffs to begin. The teams’ last preparations before playoffs began included the Chaska Invite The Cards celebrating Tournament.

At Chaska, 8 of the 12 teams were ranked in the Top 10 in their class. Coach Franz Boelter mentions this among other reasons the tournament prepares the Cardinals for playoffs. Boelter said the teams biggest challenge at the tournament was “trying to maintain a consistent level of play and truing to avoid the lapses that raise their ugly head in a long day of competition.” Despite these challenges, the team managed to come out with three wins, one loss and in fifth place. Boelter was happy with the outcome of the day, especially because the only team the girls lost to went on to win the championship game. Overall it was a successful day for the team and they were all the more ready for playoffs to begin.

Playoffs mean new challenges and more pressure for the players and the coaches. All three of the coaches, Mr. Boelter, Mrs. Jandro and Abby Samargia, have been busy scouting teams that the Cardinals could possibly play if they keep winning. Coach Boelter said of the challenges in playoffs, “The thing that will challenge us the most will be to ignore whom we are playing and concentrate on keeping our own level of play where it is capable of being.” The girls hope to play their best and keep the season going as long as possible.

A Run at State The Bethlehem Academy Cardinals football team has a 10-1 record on the season this far. They recently beat the No. 1 ranked team in section 2A, New Ulm Cathedral. This game made them section champs and gave them a ticket to state. Coach Hason said “As a football team we always believed that we could accomplish this.” He also said “The team deserves to be here because of all the hard work they have put in throughout the years.” “It shows that hard work and dedication does pay off.” “we believe that we can win a state championship” The cardinals next game will be the state quarter finals against Goodhue. Goodhue is 8-3 on the season. Both teams played KenyonWanamingo, BA lost 14-17 and Goodhue beat them 27-7. A lot of people think that Goodhue is a very physical team. BA is also a very physical team so it will be a good matchup. The team that has the most physical and strongest line will probably win this game. The winner of this game will go on to play Minneota in the semifinals.

Minneota won state last year and is undefeated again this year. The closest game that they have had this season was a win against BOLD the score was 24-14.

BETHLEHEM ACADEMY NEWS The St. Thomas Band Convention sounded like a good experience.

I asked three people, Nora Schulz, Maya Scheirder, and Karissa Schuenke. These ladies said that each instrument group splits up into groups. They practice there piece that they would do. They had a conductor from Tennessee come and talk to the students.

Then the last day they did a concert for there parents and other family members that wanted to go. I asked Nora Schulz what she thought and she said, “The St. Thomas Band Convention was a very educational and fun experience! It was great working with world renowned conductors, and playing with skilled band students from all around Minnesota. The 13 hours of playing was exhausting, but definitely worth every minute because at the end of the day we preformed with our designated bands, and the music was beautiful!” I thought that it would be exhausting to play an instrument for thirteen hours. That conversation lead into how many people were there. Karissa Schuenke said, “St. Thomas was an excellent experience. I was able to be in the concert band with roughly 128 other High School Students. I got to learn new techniques and ways to improve my musical talents. The people there were very kind and friendly. We got to have a guest Conductor from Tennessee which was fun to have. I would recommend any band member to do this because it will change you and give you a different perspective on how High School bands can play.” I would think that 128 people at a Band convention would be awesome to listen to because there are a lot of different instruments that were there. Some of the instruments would be amazing to listen to. I was wondering if it would be challenging to play challenging music with other bands and Maya Scheider said, “The St. Thomas Band Festival was a great opportunity. Overall was really fun to be a part of. I went this year because I wanted to play more challenging music. It was a great experience to play with some of the best high school musicians in the state for a day.” It sounds like that the St. Thomas Band Convention was something that would be fun to attend.

LEARNING CHECKPOINT Educational Step Ladder Checkup

Joshua Bohner, a freshman BA Star article staff member, was asked to give a article about what he had learned in his classes on the week of October 26 - October 29. He has a wide spectrum of classes to attend: Band, Geometry, Chemistry, Citizenship and Government, English 9, Physical education, and Multimedia. He has a tight schedule, and an increased amount of work from middle school, but so far he has a good GPA for the first semester compared to the average freshman.

The first class Joshua told us about was Geometry. Mrs. Jandro uses a classroom method called a “flipped classroom”, which means you learn the lessons at home through podcasts that Mrs. Jandro posts to a site called Sophia. Then, when you come to class, we correct our homework and gives our scores, and then Mrs. Jandro helps us review the lesson by giving us practice problems.

Then we get our homework and have the rest of the class to work on it. Joshua learned on Tuesday about “Triangle Theorems”, which means methods to solve different triangle problems using postulates and theorems. He did well on the assignment, and the next day he learned about Quadrilaterals, such as parallelograms, Kites, Trapezoids, and Trapeziums.

Next, Joshua told us about his experience in Chemistry.

He recently had a test and he thinks he did well on it. The test was about compounds, mixtures, elements, and pure substances. He studied all the vocabulary words and went over the little things in the chapter that were important.

Overall, he did well on all the review assignments as well.

After that, he mentioned that he was doing well in Citizenship and Government. In Citizenship and Government, he is learning about the U.S. government and its functions, as well as the powers restrained by the constitution. He currently worked on an assignment about congressional committees. He chose the Environment and Public Works committee.

NEW TECHNOLOGY AT B.A

ISSUE NUMBER 1

(SMART BOARDS OR TV’S)

TV Monitor Recently, we’ve gotten some new technology at B.A, specifically in Mrs. Seidel’s classroom who teaches various levels of high school English and Morality. We had Mrs. Seidel elaborate on her feelings towards the Smart TV; “I’m very excited to have this opportunity I see such potential already, although I don’t quite feel fully equipped I feel with more training it will be great.” Makayla and I have Mrs. Seidels' English III class and we’ve already seen that it has great benefits to the classroom. During our interview with Mrs. Seidel we mentioned how other teachers might benefit from the Smart TV rather than the Smart board. Mrs. Seidel mentioned that teachers should really have a choice on whether they think the switch would benefit their particular class but we should definitely involve technology in each classroom. So far, Mrs. Seidel has used the Smart TV everyday and really enjoys it, her only concern is regarding whether our school has the network to support it. While a student was presenting an iMovie in class, the speed was very off. We’re not too sure if it’s the Smart TV, the computer, or the network or maybe a factor of all three.

We also asked some students their thoughts on the new Smart TV installed, a lot of cons that were mentioned was the fact that many student can’t connect to it with our laptops as well as the size of the TV not comparing to the Smart board. Although some pros would be that it won’t overheat as well as it not being as interactive as the Smart board.

Smart Board We then thought it would be a good idea to ask Mr. Wagner his thoughts since after all he is the technology specialist at our school. Mr. Wagner mentioned he thinks the Smart TV will be a great educational tool for Mrs. Seidel’s classroom.

“The large HD screen will be great for presentations, and it will allow the Apple TV to be utilized to a greater extent rather than the Smart board.”

We were curious what made B.A switch from the Smart Board to the TV. Mr. Wagner explained that there were a number of factors in decided to switch from the Smart board to the TV. “First, there was a need to replace the projector that was being used by the SMART Board. This likely would have cost over $1000. Being that the projector had to be replaced, we then looked at the uses of the SMART Board in the classroom, and what future need would be. If we were to replace the projector, there would be future costs associated with replacing bulbs. Furthermore, the board itself was over 8 years old, which means that it would likely need repairs soon in the future as well. However, money was not the only factor in the switch.

Ultimately, we felt that by replacing the projector and board with a television, we would save money, have a great HD screen, and utilize the Apple TV and iPads more.” Mr. Wagner is ultimately hoping for the teachers to gain more knowledge on technology. As students, we can’t wait to see where this !1new technology takes us.

WHO’S WHO? GET TO KNOW YOUR CLASSMATES

Delaney Donahue For a middle schooler, we interviewed Delaney Donahue.

Going into this interview Makayla and I knew only that she was Kallie’s cousin so we weren’t too sure what to expect. Beginning our interview we asked Delaney what some of her accomplishments were regarding school, she mentioned that she was doing better in math class, she’s been working hard in volleyball and has just become a better student in general. Then we started talking about goals we would all like to accomplish this school year, all three of us agreed that maintaining a GPA of 3.9 the whole year would be ideal. We then started talking about inventions that would make life easier for people and the world in general. Delaney had a brilliant idea of inventing a charger that is bendable so you could plug in large and small appliances at the same time. We agreed that this idea needed to be invented as soon as possible and would be very useful at home. Makayla then mentioned life outside of school, we asked Delaney if she could change a rule that her family has, what would she change and why.

“The rule I would change would be cleaning up after myself because I never want to do that.” Lastly we asked her what advice she would give herself if she could travel back in time 3 years. “Be confident and work harder in school and in sports as well as be supportive of others.”

Tanner Jandro This week, for Who’s Who edition for a high schooler, we decided to interview someone right out of our Multimedia class; Tanner Jandro. Makayla and I both knew very little about Tanner going into this interview which made it that much more exciting! During our interview with Tanner we got into talking about sports and what he’s looking forward to this year. Tanner mentioned that he is looking forward to basketball and golf because “they are fun to play, i’ve grown up playing these sports whenever i get a chance to or when i’m hanging out with friends.” We asked how he got into them, whether that was set by example or just a love for the sport.

Tanner said his father played basketball and his grandpa played golf but it was also a love for the sport. I mentioned that I appreciate and admire people who can play basketball but i could never bring myself to play personally, only because i feel like i’d get trampled which is one of my biggest fears. That’s how we got into talking about fears, Tanner said tornados were the only thing that really frightened him. Makayla and I both agreed. Somehow we got into the conversation of mispronouncing words like carmel or carAmel. We asked Tanner if Wednesday was pronounced Wed-nessday or Wenz-day? All three of us agreed on Wenz-day.

Then we moved onto a more debatable one which is, data. is it pronounced daa-taa or day-ta? Tanner and Makayla agreed on day-ta. I agreed to disagree and said it was daa-taa. Best wishes your junior year at BA, Tanner!

HALLOWEEN TRICK OR TREATING AT BA Article Written by May and Faith Johnson Haunted Houses, Trick or Treating, Parties, Bonfires, Carving Pumpkins, and watching Scary Movies are traditional Halloween festivities.Halloween is the one time of year that both kids and adults get to dress up as their favorite superhero, Disney Princess, animals, etc. This year BA and DMCS had many ghoulish activities to celebrate Halloween!

DMCS Students Trick or Treating at BA It has been a tradition at BA to have the preschool and day care kids from Divine Mercy come tour BA going from classroom to classroom to receive treats and show off their Halloween Costumes. This year we are expecting 53 preschool kids 9 daycare kids. They will be coming Friday morning after mass at 9:45 following the NHS inductee ceremony. It is always super fun to see the creative costumes the little kids have on. Having the little kids come to BA is always fun because it’s a neat experience for them to see what BA is like and see the older kids. Also, SADD members went over to DMCS to hand out candy to the little kids, and talk about being safe while trick or treating.

Trunk or Treat The special trick or treating event was held on Halloween at Bethlehem Academy parking lot. This was a safe way to get the little kids trick or treating. It was the first year Bethlehem Academy hosted this event, and it was a great success! There were 29 trunks both within BA and outside from the community, like, BA football, key club and NHS; the firefighters, sheriffs department, and Knight of Columbus. There were 600 hotdog meals served, and it is estimated that over 1000 children came. Without Mr. Donlon and Mrs. Seidel’s help, this wouldn't have been such a successful event!

Spooktacular 5K run/walk This event was held on Saturday October 24, 2015 at 8am at DMCS. This was a good way for the DMCS community to get out and to help support DMCS in there halloween costumes!
