BETHLEHEM ACADEMY CLASS OF 2011

On May 27, 2011, Bethlehem Academy graduated 48 seniors in the Class of 2011 during ceremonies at the school. These 48 graduates are now members of the Bethlehem Academy Alumni Association.

Principal Sherri Langfeldt announced the 2011 Valedictorian as Nicholas Weiers. Nick is the son of Gary and Jane Weiers. The BA Salutatorian for the Class of 2011 is Jacob Mayer, the son of Dennis and Shari Mayer.

Other top students include Patricia Ashley, Mercedez Aase, Macdaniel Malecha and Jessica Roushar who earned Summa Cum Laude honors, Madeline Correll, Jessica McCarthy, Sean Lipinski, and Elisabeth Dietz who won Magna Cum Laude awards, and Victoria Nass, Christina Angell, Jessica Bendzick, Samantha McBain, Claire Schulz and Alexandra Carlander who earned Cum Laude awards.

It is with great appreciation to all the people we’ve met through these past five years at Bethlehem Academy for giving us the opportunity to learn more about the great history of the school and to work with those whose efforts make BA great.

At the beginning of July, I will begin a new chapter in life returning to the radio business in Mankato. This move will allow me the ability to be closer to family including our four sons, two granddaughters and future grandchildren!

During my time here at BA, we have made so many new friends who believe in the future of the school. These folks speak proudly of seeing their children and grandchildren graduate from Bethlehem Academy. Others are graduates who live across the nation and who hold a soft spot in their hearts for BA.

Besides working with fine teachers and staff who bring so many talents to the school, it has been my great pleasure to work side by side with Sr. Theresa Thomas, BA ’53, who volunteers in the Advancement Office as the school archivist and source for Alumni information. And to work with former Consolidated Catholic School Principal Sr. Catherine Lyons, who helps in the BA Library and in the Advancement office.

These two Sinsinawa Dominicans are wonderful ladies who represent the greatness of BA. Sr. Theresa is a great story teller and a great friend. I’ll always remember the story she told about her late mother, Margaret (Fox) Thomas, BA ‘31, who helped organize the first BA Food Stand at the Rice County Fair back in the 1950s. Her mother butchered chickens early in the morning and then brought the birds to the BA Food Stand to be fried and sold to help benefit BA students. Great history!

Sr. Catherine received her Master’s in Education years ago and was always fond of saying as we placed labels and stamps on letters, “I got my Master’s for this?” We joked with each other by achieving these tasks telling ourselves that maybe we were reaching our competency levels. Great humor! Both of these ladies have been great guides for me during my time at BA. I will miss them dearly.

It’s been my great pleasure to be a small part of BA’s great history over these past five years. I’ll always remember BA and the great people I’ve had the privilege to meet. The school is in good hands and will continue to thrive and succeed…thanks to support from you.

Scholarship Funds at BA

Over the years, Bethlehem Academy has been blessed by the creation of scholarship funds designed to honor people who loved the school. These scholarship funds continue today and are a source of income to be used to make a Bethlehem Academy education a reality for many students. Here is a list and description of the active and current Scholarship Funds at Bethlehem Academy: Arthur & Lorraine Amundson Fund honors the memory of the Amundson’s who raised six children through BA. The scholarship will benefit a junior or senior student at Bethlehem Academy whose family is dedicated to the BA traditions.

Jim (Coach) Anderson Scholarship benefits a BA boy with athletic interest who is a good student.

BA President’s Fund will benefit deserving BA students with scholarship assistance beginning in 2011. The President’s Fund is made up of other BA endowments to help provide a BA education to future students.

Stella Bedford Service Scholarship benefits a BA student who demonstrates financial need and serves BA, the church or the community with the dedication to serve that Stella Bedford demonstrated during her lifetime. (Established in 2009) Candie (Stoner) Brand Scholarship benefits a BA student interested in Math and Science.

Cecelia Borsch (Milewski/Schaffer) Nursing Endowment is a scholarship fund designed to assist BA students interested in pursuing nursing as a career.

Leo & Ottie Brand Scholarship produces scholarship funds for an incoming freshman looking to enroll at Bethlehem Academy.

Patrick Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund will create proceeds to be used to help a future sophomore at BA who takes part in athletics and needs tuition assistance.

Class of 1943 Endowed Scholarship Fund provides tuition and scholarship assistance for deserving students wishing to attend Bethlehem Academy.

Class of 1968 Scholarship Fund. Established in 2008 to honor Class of ’68 BA graduates and assist future BA students.

Crosby Family Scholarship benefits a hardworking BA student who enjoys education, fine arts and sports and is willing to live, love and laugh.

Gloria Dapper Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for students desiring to attend Bethlehem Academy.

Bob & Joanne DeGrood Family Scholarship benefits Bethlehem Academy students who demonstrate outstanding Christian values and apply themselves according to their abilities in school, church and community activities.

Kilian Donahue Scholarship honors the memory of Kilian Donahue, the son of Jim and Jessie (Mullenmeister) Donahue. Kilian was born December 22, 2003 and died on December 25, 2003. The fund was created with the intent to have future scholarships awarded to BA students who have siblings attending Bethlehem Academy.

Regina M. Dunleavy Estate Fund honors the life of 1920 BA graduate Regina Dunleavy. The fund helps to benefit selected Bethlehem Academy students in need of scholarships in order to attend BA. The Mary McKenna Friesen Memorial Scholarship Fund honors the memory of Mary who graduated from BA in 1949 and was a passionate supporter of the school. This fund provides financial assistance to a student in need who shares Mary’s love of BA and has an aptitude for Math.

Mary Griffin Scholarship was established in 2005 with proceeds used as scholarship money for future Bethlehem Academy students in need.

Hanlon Family Fund—-Established in 2008 for future Bethlehem Academy students in need of financial assistance.

Lawrence Johnson Memorial Trust Fund was established in 1951 to honor the 1947 Bethlehem Academy graduate. Proceeds are used to assist a BA freshman.

Knights of Columbus Council 889 and Ladies Auxiliary Scholarship established in January 2011 to benefit students in Faribault Catholic schools. Students writing the best essay describing their Catholic school education and their faith are eligible for the scholarship awards.

Irene Kratt Memorial Scholarship assists a junior boy and girl participating in basketball as a senior with $100 activity scholarship.

Recipients show good sportsmanship, team player skills, and are good allaround students.

Delores and Joseph and Michael LaCanne Family Scholarship Fund benefits students who demonstrate outstanding Christian values and who are motivated to apply themselves in school and church. Delores and Joseph LaCanne raised eleven children, with ten of them graduating from Bethlehem Academy.

Father Ken LaVan Scholarship Fund will help provide financial assistance to future BA student-athletes in need.

Clarence E & Olive Low Scholarship benefits BA students who live in the rural area and who have an appreciation for religious education at BA. Luckow Family Scholarship Fund—-Established in 2008 by past Bethlehem Academy parent Kim Halvorson. Future proceeds will assist future BA students truly in need.

Steven Malecha Scholarship Fund was established to assist future BA students with financial needs who take part in band, basketball or theater.

McQuoid Family Scholarship Fund—-The McQuoid Fund honors the memory of past BA parents Weir and Edna (Endres) McQuoid who raised three sons to receive Catholic school education in Faribault. Future proceeds of the endowment will benefit Bethlehem Academy students in need of financial assistance.

L.E. “Abe” Merrill Scholarship provides money to graduating BA students who are pursuing a college education.

Gladues Geiger McCarthy Scholarship was created to provide scholarship assistance for deserving students attending Bethlehem Academy.

Frank & Edna Miller Fund provides scholarship assistance for students attending Bethlehem Academy High School in need of tuition support.

Robert & Doris Mullenberg Scholarship provides scholarship assistance to deserving students at Bethlehem Academy.

Ostrom Family Fund is an endowment which provides scholarship assistance to students attending BA. Jackee Reichert Memorial was established in remembrance of Jacqueline Reichert who did not live to see her graduation in 1996.

Jackee’s family encourages scholarship recipients to be positive and filled with the zest for life.

David Reuvers Memorial Fund is designed to benefit Bethlehem Academy students involved in BA Activities, an “all-around good student.” Reuvers was a 1952 graduate who was a great BA Booster who loved sports.

Ordean Reveland Memorial Fund honors the memory of the 1949 BA graduate who had a passion for the school and as a promoter of BA and city-wide athletics. This fund will benefit future male students involved with sports in need of financial assistance.

Dr. C.F. Robertshaw Memorial Scholarship fund provides financial assistance to Bethlehem Academy students in need.

Ron Thibault Scholarship Fund was created in 2010 to honor the life of 1959 BA graduate, Ron Thibault, who worked as a teacher, coach and administrator at BA until his untimely death on Sept. 6, 2009. Proceeds from the Thibault endowment will help students interested in the arts including Industrial Arts, Band, Choir, Theater and Art. Denis and Mary Varley Family Scholarship Fund provides tuition scholarship funding for financially needy, hard working students who are interested in enrolling at BA. (Created in 2008) Strauss Family Scholarship honors the lives of Clemens and R. Annetta Strauss, BA’32. The Strauss’ were great believers in Bethlehem Academy and raised eight children who graduated from BA. Dewey Van Orsow Family Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for a BA High School student who does well in school and enjoys athletic participation.

William & Aleen Wells Family Scholarship Fund created in November 2008 honors the parents of nine children, eight of whom graduated from Bethlehem Academy. Proceeds will assist students in grades 9-12 in need of financial assistance.

Bethlehem Academy accepts charitable contributions to all of the Scholarship Funds listed here. If you would like to make a donation to benefit and support one or more of these scholarship funds, please use the Gift Envelope enclosed in this issue of the Traditions Newsletter. From the Desk of Sherri Langfeldt BA President/Principal Once again spring is here and graduation is upon us. This past year at BA has been a very exciting one for me! While I truly enjoy my duties as principal, I have begun to more fully appreciate what it means to be the president of Bethlehem Academy.

During this past year I have had the tremendous opportunity to understand the impact that a Bethlehem Academy education has on students by getting to know the BA alumni family. WOW!!!

Bethlehem Academy graduates are exceptional people doing exceptional things! It has been my pleasure to meet CEO’s, religious, educators, doctors, nurses, parents, artists, lawyers and students. Some are just beginning their adult journey, while others are near the end. They have made their homes across our country and each has selected their own unique path, but they share commonality in that they choose to lead lives of faith and service, they seem to be exceptionally happy in their chosen fields, and ALL are extremely loyal to their high school alma mater - Bethlehem Academy.

The Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters founded BA to empower its students and staff to achieve personal, spiritual and academic excellence. They challenge us to love as Jesus Christ loved, to lead, to serve, to inspire and to seek the truth. It has been the privilege and responsibility of all those who have come before us to ensure that this vision, this mission, is carried out; now that privilege, that responsibility, lies with all of us. For this to happen we count on the generosity of alumni and benefactors to give generously of their time, talents and treasures. This loyalty to BA is both essential to the mission of the school and enormously appreciated!

BA graduates make their homes throughout our country, and in order to keep them actively connected to BA, we will begin holding Alumni Gathering Events (AGE). News & Notes 1/15/11 thru 6/1/11

The days of chalk and blackboards have gone the way of technology and SMART Boards TM, and Bethlehem Academy classrooms are getting more smart boards each year. The so called Smart boards are interactive whiteboards functioning as an oversized touch-sensitive computer. Using a special pen, a finger or virtually any object, teachers and students can control computer applications, write notes, pull up charts and images, erase or rearrange objects on a screen, reach the Internet, play educational videos, and save work.

Thanks to the generosity of BA parents and supporters, the school won a Smart Board through the Faribault area Hy-Vee Smiles for Education contest held last fall.

Congratulations to Bethlehem Academy Middle School students Katrina Reeder and Sara Kohl who placed second at the State Science Olympics held the weekend of March 12-13 in St. Paul, MN.

Sr. Mary Ellen Gevelinger, OP has been elected Prioress of the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation in voting held in Wisconsin in April. Sr. Mary Ellen succeeds Sr. Patricia Mulcahy who served in the leadership role for the past five years. Gevelinger is currently the Director of Doctoral Research at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. She is a former high school administrator and teacher.

She served as a Religion teacher at Bethlehem Academy in Faribault from 1974 to 1977.

The newly-elected leadership team will be installed in July 2011.

BABS Night 2011

Jim Mahowald, left, and Josh Battles served up tacos donated from El Tequila in Faribault at the school’s annual BABS NIGHT event on Saturday, April 9 at BA.

The event was attended by nearly 500 people who bid on auction items, enjoyed Mexican food and drink, and purchased raffle tickets for the fundraiser. The annual event helped to raise more than $70,000 to help benefit needs at Bethlehem Academy.

The 2011 BABS NIGHT Raffle ticket winners included the following:

BA CLASSROOM RENOVATION/SMART BOARD PROJECT HELPED AT BABS NIGHT

During the BABS NIGHT Live Auction, a total of (48) donors made gifts totaling over $19,000 to benefit the 2011 Classroom Renovation/Smart Boards project. In 2010 BA supporters contributed $21,000 for the BA Shop/Industrial Arts area; in 2009, over $23,000 was donated to update the BA Music Room, and in 2008, over $14,000 was donated for the Handicapped Ramp Project at the school.

BA Holds Cardinal Cruise Fun Run

They’re off!!!

Bethlehem Academy held its inaugural Cardinal Cruise Fun Run on April 9, 2011 as nearly 300 runners participated in the event to promote healthy lifestyles among students, staff, faculty, parents and alumni. The event helped to raise $5,000 to benefit Bethlehem Academy.

The event started and finished at the Rice County Fairgrounds in Faribault with runners going through paved neighborhood trails in Faribault.

BA Fundraising Director Sue Erpenbach said the event was a great success and the school plans to hold next year’s event on Saturday, April 14, 2012. Pictured above is the Laughlin family who finished first in their competition.

Capital Campaign Corner Capital Campaign updates – THE GOOD NEWS! To date, BA alumni and supporters have pledged over $3 million to the Embrace the Miracle Capital Campaign.

This will provide much needed, handicap accessible, additional space for fine arts, physical education and Franz Boelter athletics. THE CHALLENGE! An additional $3 million in pledges are needed to break ground. THE GOOD NEWS! Construction costs and interests rates are at an all-time low. THE CHALLENGE! We plan to break ground by early fall 2011.

It is with great pleasure that we announce our building committee has awarded this project to two local companies; Met-Con Construction and Varley Construction will be serving together as Construction Managers at Risk. As we move closer to ground breaking, they will look to take bids from other, predominantly local, businesses as sub contractors. In the meantime we will begin clearing the space needed for the addition. On or shortly after July 1st, demolition will take place, removing the first house south of the school!

Opportunities and Blessings

By Oscar Gomez, BA Class of 2007 When I first arrived at Bethlehem Academy as an 8th grader in 2003, I struggled to adjust, but was able to find my way thanks to many people.

By Jessie Kelly This past February, 39 Bethlehem Academy 8th grade students and chaperones embarked on a trip to the north woods of Minnesota for a weeklong educational field trip. This trip marked the 6th annual voyage north, but this year the students were able to attend all 5 days instead of the 2 ½ days from previous years.

Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center is located in Finland, MN and is where the outdoors meets classroom instruction. The students took classes in individual growth, ecology, astronomy, and outdoor recreation. This non-traditional type of learning takes students out of the classroom and puts them outdoors where they are able to make a personal connection with the environment. Students were able to have birds land on their heads, get up close and personal with a whitetailed deer, catch a fish, build a fire and winter shelter, rock climb, and cross country ski, among many other activities.

The week was rounded off with a beautiful Mass by Father Eric Lundgren followed by group skits, and a campfire in which students were able to share with one another what they were thankful for.

As the lead teacher, I was incredibly thankful for the opportunity to take such wonderful, respectful young men and women on this trip. I was reminded once again just how special our kids are and how proud I am to be a part of the Bethlehem Academy family.

My first year was difficult. I had new teachers to get used to, I was alone, and I didn’t have any friends. I also had to learn to be more responsible with my homework at BA. At the public school I had mentors to help me since English is not my first language.

There were many times I told my parents I didn’t want to go to BA because I missed my friends. Even though my parents understood my feelings, they insisted that Bethlehem Academy was the best place for me.

By the end of the school year in 8th grade I had made friends with some students in my class. While I was the only Hispanic and the only one in class with a funny accent, I felt accepted.

The years went by and my English started getting better day by day, and of course, my grades got better as well. Encouraging me to attend BA was one of the best decisions my parents made.

If I hadn’t attended this great school I would never have met such wonderful people as Mr. Thibault. He introduced me to the world of woodworking and taught me how to create beautiful projects. Matt Musel was another great person I met at BA. He was always there to help me with homework and to figure out what I wanted to do with my life after graduating from high school. Thanks to Matt, I was introduced to Joe Varley. Joe is the nicest person I have ever met (of course after my parents). I don’t think I will ever finish thanking him for all the things he has done for me. Joe gave me a job for the last five summers so I could pay for college. Joe will always be a role model for me.

He has taught me how to help my community, how to be a responsible worker, and how to always use your head – even when you are just mowing the lawn.

I recently received my Carpentry Diploma and am currently finishing up my A.A.S. degree in Construction Supervision. I will soon begin my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management at Dunwoody College of Technology. Hopefully, I can become a great General Contractor someday.

Thanks to the 45 men who again made the BA Boys’ Basketball Alumni Tourney a huge success on Easter Sunday.

A great time was had by all, and over $1,500 was raised to support our youth basketball program.

I don’t know if I can express enough how much my BA experience has changed my life because words cannot cover it.

But what I do know is that if it wasn’t for BA I wouldn’t be the person I am today!

ALUMNI UPDATE 1/15/11 thru 5/15/11 1955 Wayne and Katie (Waldron) Smisek, BA ’58 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 22, 2011.

1957 Bob and Rosie (Fletcher) BA ’60 Poirier celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 10, 2011 in Faribault.

1960 Patricia (Waldron) Bauer and her husband Dave celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends on April 16, 2011.

1971 BA Baseball Forty years ago this spring, the 1971 BA baseball team made its first appearance since 1962 in the state tournament.

The Fred Korba-coached Cardinals used a five-run seventh inning to rally past Winona Cotter 7-5 in the region semifinals. BA then qualified for the state tournament with a five hit, no walk pitching performance by John Huber and a long two-run homer by Jerry DeGroot leading the way to a 5-1 win over New Ulm Cathedral.

The team was eliminated in the first round at state, falling to Archbishop Brady by a 3-2 score. Team members were Dave O’Neil, Paul Perron, DeGroot, Joe Wood, Mike Kajer, Huber, Rick Schmitz, Steve McComas, Steve Tousignant, Jake Brand, Dave Lang, Greg Doherty, George Chappuis and Gabe Sherman.

1972 Steve McComas addressed future BA students and their parents during enrollment night activities at school this past January. McComas works as an Aquatic Scientist in St. Paul, MN. 1982 Greg Zimprich continues his work as Director of brand public relations for General Mills where he manages publicity efforts for more than 100 brands including Wheaties, Cheerios, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury and dozens of household names. Greg graduated from St. Mary’s in Winona and then attended Marquette University before he started in the advertising agency business. He has been at General Mills for more than 18 years.

1984 Jill (Johnson) Boutros’ wine making business, Chateau Belle-Vue, located in Bhamdoun Mhatta, Lebanon, was featured in a BBC Radio story called “Vines on the Front Line” in January, 2011. Jill and her husband, Naji Boutros, started the vineyard

in 2000 in Naji’s native Lebanon. Their wine was also featured in a Star Tribune article in the Minneapolis newspaper which reported Chateau Belle-Vue’s La Chateau 2005 is the only wine served by the glass at the Ritz Carlton in London and the Cheese Cave in Faribault, MN. Eric Oppegard was named Owatonna Teacher of the Year in May, 2011 for his efforts as a 5th grade teacher at the Owatonna, Minnesota schools. Congratulations to Eric!!!

Mitch Luckow is employed as a registered nurse with the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Rochester. Mitch is also a Captain with the Army Reserves where he serves as the head medical officer.

Lucas Speckhals is engaged to marry Sarah Donahue, BA ’03 on July 30, 2011. Luke is the son of Jon and Katie (McHugo) Speckhals, both BA Class of 1977. Sarah is the daughter of Mark Donahue, BA ’80 and Robin Donahue, past parent.

Maureen (O’Connor) Hauge is working for Boston Scientific in Maple Grove, MN. Maureen and her husband, Brian, live in Minneapolis.

James O’Connor is living in Istanbul, Turkey teaching English to the young people in Turkey. James is the son of Wayne, BA ’69 and Mary O’Connor.

Lana Brand is engaged to marry Luke Prokop in Grand Rapids, MN on July 16, 2011. Lana is attending St. Catherine University and will graduate with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2012. She is the daughter of Jake, BA ‘72 and Lola Brand of Faribault.

Michelle Siegfried is working as a Customer Service Representative for HB Fuller Company in the Twin Cities. Michelle is the daughter of Mark and Patti Siegfried of Faribault.

Korey Geller graduated from Concordia University in St. Paul on May 14, 2011 with a BBA Degree in both Accounting and Finance. Korey is working with Bernard Brodkorb Jr., CPA accounting office in St. Paul.

Chris Palmer was named 2010-11 First Team All-MIAC after averaging 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game as a sophomore for the St. Mary’s University men’s basketball team this past winter.

After five years at Bethlehem Academy, Director of Advancement Jack Kolars will be leaving B.A. We are very grateful and feel blessed for the time that Jack has spent with us.

Under his direction the advancement office experienced tremendous growth. His ability to take what was already in place and to then expand those programs, as well as starting new ones, certainly leaves B.A. in an enviable position. The following are examples of accomplishments during his tenure: • Doubling the number of constituent households in the BA database from approximately 3,500 to nearly 6,500.

• Doubling the amount of charitable gifts donated during this five-year period as compared to the previous five-year period.

• Improving the quality of the Traditions Newsletter by adding color and improving content.

• Coordinating the BA Scholarship Funds and promoting those endowed funds through the newsletter.

• Through the acquisition of the Raiser’s Edge, assisting the school in updating, improving, and maintaining the integrity of BA’s constituent database.

• Coordinating the creation of the school’s marketing image – Bethlehem Academy – The Miracle is Here!

• Working with more than thirty class reunion gatherings over the past three years.

• Working with the advancement committee and the BA Board to coordinate the annual BA Benefactor Mass and Brunch, as well as the Court of Honor inductions, held jointly in December.

• Through all of the above, helping to set the stage for the current capital campaign.

“As a former board member and as a member of the advancement committee, I have really enjoyed working with Jack and have appreciated the tremendous job he has done in improving the way Bethlehem Academy presents itself to alums and the community. We were very fortunate to have him for the past five years,” states Jake Brand.

Sr. Theresa Thomas, OP, an advancement volunteer and our B.A. archivist, offered this tribute. “Following a long line of efficient advancement directors, Jack has also made an impact on this office. He will be especially remembered for his generous time spent with each individual or family as they expressed their ideas, concerns, and wishes.”

Bethlehem Academy will always be grateful for Mr. Kolars’ leadership over the past five years.

Rest in Peace Please remember our deceased friends and alumni in your prayers. (Word received between 1-15-11 and 5-15-11) Lois Meillier, PP, died Sept. 11, 2010 in Faribault, MN at the age of 82. During her life, Lois worked at various businesses including Western Union Telegraph and Pleasant Manor Nursing home. She was a member of Council of Catholic Women and Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. Lois is survived by her husband, David Meillier, BA ’42 and by her children, Mike Meillier, BA ’68, Patrick Meillier, BA ’68, Teresa Meillier, BA ’73, Ann Meillier, BA ’79 and Mary Meillier, BA ’80.

Lucy (Van Zuilen) Pansier, BA ’43, passed away Nov. 5, 2010 in Faribault. Lucy and her late husband, Willis, farmed near Faribault.

She was 87 years old and is survived by her three children.

Mary Ann (Riegert) Duff, BA ’64 passed away Nov. 9, 2010 in St. Paul. Mary Ann is survived by her husband, James Duff, and by her two children. She was a retired clerical worker.

Marguerite “Peggy” (Studer) Sperl, BA ‘61 passed away Jan. 21, 2011 at the age of 67. A former employee of Control Data, Peggy retired after years of service as a senior programmer/analyst for Minnegasco in Minneapolis. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Michael Sperl of Richfield and by her siblings including John Studer, BA ’56, Jane (Studer) Lund, BA ‘64, David Studer, BA ’69 and Dan Studer, BA ‘70. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Marguerite and Dr. Donald Studer, and by a sister, Donna (Studer) Sandler, BA ‘59. The family asks that memorials honoring Peggy be directed to Bethlehem Academy.

Jack Campbell, PGP, passed away Jan. 23, 2011 at the age of 80.

He is survived by three children including David Campbell, PP, and by grandchildren, Katie Campbell, BA ’98 and Tim Campbell, BA ’02.

Thomas Novotny, BA ’65 died Jan. 24, 2011 at the age of 64. Tom owned the Webb Gas Station and Midwest Tree Service in Faribault.

He is survived by his wife, Judy, by three children and one grandchild. He is also survived by four siblings including Mary Van Ryn, BA ‘57, Robert Novotny, BA ‘58, Jim Novotny, BA ‘62 and Kathy Walsh, BA ’67. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Patricia Novotny, BA ’55.

Marjorie Yerhot, PP died Jan. 28, 2011 at the age of 82. A homemaker and mother of six, she and her late husband farmed near Kilkenny. Marjorie is survived by her children: Mary Condon, BA ’66, Michael Yerhot, BA ’67, Joan Patee, BA ’71, Don Yerhot, BA ’72, Timothy Yerhot, BA ’72, and Jane Hanegraaf, BA ’85.

Mary Jane Barrett, age 90 of St. Paul, MN died Feb. 1, 2011. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Barrett, who was a former teacher and coach at Bethlehem Academy. Mrs. Barrett is also survived by her seven children.

Gary Langevin, formerly of Faribault, died Feb. 4, 2011 in Portland, Oregon at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife, Marlene and four children. He is also survived by his sister, Joan (Langevin) Purdie, BA ’56.

Leona Ackman, PP, passed away Feb.3, 2011 in Faribault at the age of 85. A member of the Daughters of Isabella and the Council of Catholic Women, Leona is survived by her five sons including Louis, Richard, Don, Jim Ackman, BA ’63 and Chuck Ackman.

Emmett Keiffer, age 77 of Wylie, Texas died Feb. 3, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann (Helling) Keiffer, BA ’51, and his three children.

David “Shorty” Paquette, BA ’58, died suddenly Feb. 4, 2011 in Tucson, AZ at the age of 71. David is survived by his three children and also by his siblings including Marlene Pohl, BA ’55, Richard Paquette, BA ’56, Mary Jane Paquette, BA ’60, Arthur Paquette, BA ’65, Carol Paavola, BA ’67, and Kathy Hunt, BA ’71.

Irene O’Brien, PP, passed away Feb. 6, 2011 at the age of 91 in Hastings, MN. Irene worked as a Registetered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner at St. Lucas Hospital and District one Hospital, and also at Faribault State Schools. O’Brien is survived by her children Patricia Chenier, BA ’61 and Edward O’Brien, BA ’65. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, daughter Susanne Beatty, BA ’62 and son Robert. The family prefers Memorial Gifts honoring Irene O’Brien be directed to Bethlehem Academy.

Ralph Malloy, BA ’52, passed away Feb. 14, 2011 at Hastings, MN. He was 76. A champion cribbage player, Malloy was the owner of Malloy and Sons Painting. He is survived by his seven children and also by his sister, Agnes Holmes, BA ’51.

Lorraine (Kern) Caron, PP, passed away Feb. 19, 2011, at the age of 82. She is survived by her husband, Cliff Caron of Faribault, and by her children including LaJune Troolin, BA ’66, Bernard Caron, BA ’68, James Caron, BA ’69 and Steven Caron.

James Lockner, age 71 of Faribault died Feb. 19, 2010. He is survived by his brother, Mike Lockner, BA ’67, and by his sistersin-law Mary Kay Lockner, BA ’60 and Joanne Lockner.

Merle Correll, GP, passed away Feb. 19, 2010 in Moorhead at the age of 81. He is survived by his five children including David Correll, P, and by several grandchildren including Maddie Correll, BA ’11 and Samuel Correll, BA ’14.

Fred Coller, GP, passed away Feb. 20, 2011 at the age of 67. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn, and his four daughters including Caryn Coller, F and P. He is also survived by several grandchildren including AnnMarie Backstrom, BA ’14.

James Braun, BA ’68, passed away Feb 25, 2011 at the age of 60.

Jim was a longtime employee of Met-Con Construction in Faribault.

He is survived by his mother, Candice Braun and his siblings including Janice Mallberg, BA ’66, Annette Stech, BA ’69, Teresa Jackson, BA ’70, Bob Braun, BA ’74, Paul Braun, BA ’77, Peter Braun, BA ‘77 and Laurel Braun, BA ’82.

Elaine (Brown) Lambert, BA ’49, passed away March 1, 2011 at the age of 79. Elaine is survived by her two children, and by her siblings including Leo Brown, BA ’56, Brian Denis Brown, BA ’58 and Kathleen (Brown) Dodds, BA 60. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents and by her sister, Theresa Nuetzman, BA ’54.

Rose Winkels, PP, died March 1, 2011 in Northfield, MN at the age of 89. Rose is survived by her husband, Al Winkels and her four children including Father Michael Winkels, BA ’67, Marie Kampbell, BA ’69, Steve Winkels, BA ’71, and Julie Rother.

Gloria Hausen, age 67 of Olathe, Kansas, passed away March 2, 2011. Gloria is survived by her loving husband, David Hausen, BA ’59, and by her four children and twelve grandchildren.

LaVon (Dusbabek) Scanlan, BA ’46, of Clam Lake, WI died March 2, 2011 at the age of 82. She is survived by her husband, Luverne, and by her 11 children. LaVon is also survived by her twin sister, LaDon Johnson, BA ’46, of Stuart, FL. Blake Wayne, the infant grandson of 1972 BA graduate Mary Kay (Jandro) Wilson, died March 4, 2011 in Burnsville, MN. The infant is the great grandson of Tom and Phyllis Jandro of Faribault.

Nancy Wesely, PP, died March 6, 2011 at the age of 58 in Faribault.

Nancy was a Registered Nurse and practiced in Faribault until her retirement in 2007. She is survived by her husband, Francis Wesely, BA ’64, and by her son, Eric Wesely, BA ’06.

Helen Voracek, PP, died March 11, 2011 at the age of 86. Helen farmed with her late husband, George, and also worked as a cook at Bethlehem Academy. She is survived by seven children including George Voracek, BA ’63, Jan Gillen, BA ’66, Mary Mensing, BA ’68, Joan Smisek, BA’70, Grace Voracek, BA ’73, Randy Voracek, BA ’77 and Donna Mae Kadrlik, BA ‘80.

Eileen Hentges, PP, died March 13, 2011, in Mankato, MN, at the age of 94. Eileen is survived by five sons including Thomas Hentges, Richard Hentges, Michael Hentges Patrick Hentges, BA ’73 and the Rev. James Hentges, O.S.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Hentges.

Gary Benton, Sr., of Faribault, and former BA student passed away March 13, 2011 at the age of 73. A lifelong truck driver, Gary also worked as an electrician and welder. He is survived by his five children and their families.

Doris Chavie Keech, PP, died April 13, 2011 at the age of 77. She is survived by her husband, Clyde, and by two children, Todd Chavie, BA ’81, and Renae Samaan.

Donald Schmidt, longtime supporter of Bethlehem Academy died April 17, 2011 at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Schmidt, a former instructor at BA. Don is survived by his three children, Dennis Schmidt, Steve Schmidt and Andrea Schmidt.

Russell Kopplow, GP, died April 23, 2011 in Rochester at the age of 78, after an extended illness. He is survived by his ex-wife Kathryn; three children, Joseph Kopplow, Sydney Wiley and Sue Erpenbach, P. He is also survived by four grandchildren, including Bryan Olson, BA ’07 and Michael Olson, BA ’11.

Joanne (Kenney) Olson, BA ’60, died April 25, 2011, at the age of 68. During her life, Joanne was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, and is survived by several cousins.

Peter Strouth, M.D., BA ’39, passed away May 1, 2011 in Boise, Idaho at the age of 89. After graduating from BA, Strouth attended St. John’s University before graduating from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Strouth is survived by his wife, Barbara and by two children. He is also survived by a sister, Sr. Clarus (Laura) Strouth, BA ’38. He was preceded in death by his first wife and by his siblings including Marion Rose, BA ’34.

Caroline Loeffen, PP, passed away May 8, 2011 at the age of 84. Caroline was a long-time supporter and contributor to BA. She is survived by her three daughters, Maria Hruska, BA ’80, Laura Lambert, BA ’83 and Linda Demarest, BA ’83. The family prefers Memorials to Bethlehem Academy.
