A Season of Song & Celebration Commemorating the Golden Anniversary where it happened, and where it’s happening still.

VISITOR’S GUIDE

Same Place. Different Time.

As stewards of the National Register Historic site where three days of peace and music defined a generation half a century ago, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is commemorating the Golden Anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock Music & Art Fair with A Season of Song and Celebration. As a nonprofit cultural center and stewards of this hallowed ground, we carry on the legacy of half-a-million young people who gathered on Max Yasgur’s farm and left as a community determined to change the world for the better. The 1960s brought about a whirlwind of change, culminating with one of the most significant cultural events in American history. This legacy inspires the work and mission of Bethel Woods today. Experiences at Bethel Woods are designed to promote thoughtful reflection, fuel creativity, and inspire passion in all who visit. You can learn something new at a lecture or workshop, or feed your child’s imagination with our creative programs.

Visit The Museum and immerse yourself in the decade of the 1960s and how the social, cultural and political evolution of the era led to the Woodstock festival. Visit the historic site and listen for the echo of Jimi Hendrix’s guitar in the wind or walk the newly restored Bindy Bazaar trails. A visit will transport you to another time. Rock the night away singing along to your favorite band, enjoy a food and beverage festival with friends, or spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon at an autumn Harvest Festival. You’re right where you should be, in the Catskills, in the moment…at Bethel Woods. Read on to learn more about A Season of Song & Celebration, and plan your next visit. It’s all right here. Where it happened and where it’s happening still.

It embodies the movements and ideals of a generation, that remain relevant today...peace, connection to the environment, civility and kindness. This immersive, multi media experience will take you on the journey through time with artifacts, films, music and more. We also offer regularly scheduled tours with trained volunteers and docents, and this fall we will launch a multimedia tour of the historic site thanks to funding provided by American Express.

2019 SPECIAL EXHIBITS:

We Are Golden: Reflections on the 50th Anniversary of the Woodstock Festival and Aspirations for a Peaceful Future PRESENTED BY This very special exhibition examines Woodstock and what the youth of 1969 wanted for the world. It places the festival in the context of the positive societal changes it has spawned, and asks today’s youth what THEY are asking the world to do now. It positions Woodstock as a metaphor for the tumult and human response of the 1960s and to inspire young people to articulate what they want from the world today. The exhibit features a large collection of Woodstock artifacts including instruments, clothing, equipment, art, and photography. Highlights include Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane’s bass guitar and tunic, handwritten lyrics for “Goin’ Up the Country,” a festival-used speaker cabinet and mixing equipment, and photography from Woodstock’s best photographers.

Support for We Are Golden was made possible by the generous support of our presenting sponsor Orange Bank & Trust, with additional support from The Andrew Jacobson Charitable Trust, Shure Incorporated, and Humanities New York. General support for The Museum at Bethel Woods is provided by Rolling V Bus Corporation, Lazy Pond Bed & Breakfast, and Johnstons Subaru.

The National Register Historic Site of the 1969 Woodstock Festival Festival Field—Walk Max Yasgur’s field where half-a-million young people gathered 50 years ago for three days of peace, love & music. The field is open during regular museum hours except for Pavilion concert and special event days. The Woodstock Monument - Take in the tranquility of the ‘hallowed ground’ or take the perfect photo of your visit and tag us at #BethelWoods. The monument is open year round. The Bindy Bazaar Trails - The site of the marketplace at Woodstock, the Bindy Bazaar consisted of a series of trails connecting vendor booths, the art fair and playgrounds in the central wooded area. New for 2019, the first of those restored trails are open to the public for exploration.

We Are Stardust An interpretation of the July 1969 Apollo 11 Lunar Landing, exploring its history and objects through the lens of American culture. This exhibition in the Crossroads Gallery examines the effect of the Cold War, Space Race, “moon mania,” and the resulting success of the first man on the moon, on the daily lives of Americans.

May 18 Deep Field: The Impossible Magnitude of our Universe Fifty years after the moon landing, renowned speaker and Grammy-winning composer Eric Whitacre presents Deep Field. Featuring a powerful new piece of music inspired by the Hubble Space Telescope and its greatest discovery, the iconic Deep Field image. This film combines the score with Hubble’s stunning imagery and animations to create an immersive journey to the farthest edges of our universe. Whitacre is joined by NASA astronomers, scientists and astrophysicists to delve into space exploration as a scientific, artistic and cultural venture. Following the film screening and discussion, Whitacre and panelists will host a meet and greet and CD signing. VIP attendees are then welcome to a cocktail hour. June 5 Power of the Poster 1969 Woodstock poster designer David Edward Byrd and renowned Broadway poster designer Frank “Fraver” Verlizzo take attendees on a kaleidoscopic journey through the power of posters over the last 50 years including an exhibit and talk with the winner of the “Peace, Love & Posters” competition, Bethel Woods’ national poster design contest commemorating the iconic Woodstock poster and visually expressing values of kindness, community and our aspirations for the next 50 years. Winning poster designs will be on display and available for purchase at the event. Plus, as part of the P.L.A.Y. After Dark series, learn from the masters as Fraver and Byrd lead a hands-on workshop. July 25 (Free) Woodstock: Three Days That Defined A Generation A public premier of a new documentary presented by PBS & American Experience with commentary by filmmaker Barak Goodman. This film turns the lens back at the audience, at the swarming, impromptu city that grew up overnight on a few acres of farm land. What took place in that teaming mass of humanity — the rain-soaked, starving, tripping, half-a-million strong throng of young people — was nothing less than a miracle of teamwork, a manifestation of the “peace and love” the festival had touted and a validation of the counterculture’s promise to the world. Who were these kids? What experiences and stories did they carry with them to Bethel, New York that weekend, and how were they changed by three days in the muck and mire of Yasgur’s farm?

August 31-September 1 Mind: Body: Earth A two-day festival Labor Day weekend kicks off with a massive yoga class in the same location as one held at the Woodstock festival, and features innovators and vendors in health, sustainability, mindfulness. Guests may also opt for a VIP experience which includes intimate wellness and yoga sessions, cooking demonstrations, and the opportunity to stay at YO1’s world-class wellness center. Sponsored by Ready Computing. September 21 An Evening with Chris Thile Grammy Award-winner and MacArthur Fellow Chris Thile, a member of Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, and now the host of the radio program, Live from Here, is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist. With his broad outlook, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike. September 28 Framing History Woodstock Photographers Elliot Landy, Lisa Law and Baron Wolman discuss how photography helped shape the narrative and impact of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair, moderated by New York Times Photojournalist Ruth Fremson. October 2 (Free) Youth Leadership Day Find passion and purpose at this day-long summit for high school and college students which includes an inspiring keynote presentation and interactive sessions. Attendees work on opening themselves and others up to kindness and civility, leaving with tools to steward their influence wisely and lead the next generation. Participating students will leave with actionable insights into how they can implement positive change in their local communities. October 19 Sixties @ 50: “A Retrospective” The Woodstock festival was “3 days of Peace & Music” in 1969, but its impact has been felt by generations. Former editor-inchief of Out Magazine and founder of One Grand Books, Aaron Hicklin curates a panel of authors, historians, changemakers and attendees share Woodstock memories and trace contemporary movements from their origins in the 1960s. Followed by a “People’s Supper” - a dinner with tables of facilitated conversation on intergenerational storytelling that aim to instill ideals of kindness and civility.
