W

e step into the New Year believing firmly that God still loves us passionately and invites us to journey into the unknown territory with Jesus, the Incarnate Love, tenderly caring for the weak and the tired.

As the year 2016 comes to an end, the memory of our Founder is fresh within us evoking gratitude for such an inspiring person. Speaking on Bethany he said, “I carried on the work of founding Bethany in the face of warm appreciation and bitter criticism.”

Don’t these words act as a light to our path when we continue as pilgrims carrying forward the message of the Gospel? Yes, there are days of warm sunshine and brightness and days when we feel that everything goes wrong. At such moment let us remember that day or night, sunshine or rain all are gifts from the loving hands of God and say with the Patriarch Job, “If I have received good things should I not receive bad things with thankfulness?” Job 2:10 As we enter the year with hope we shall keep the doors of our hearts open and welcome all the inspirations we get from God and one another. Heavenly inspirations come to us stimulating our wills to sacred love and light. It accompanies us urging to move forward in our pilgrimage.

Holy inspiration does us three services as in the case of Tobias mentioned in the book of Tobit. Inspiration guides us throughout our journey. It protects us against the dangers and attacks of the devil. It comforts, enlivens and strengthens us in our difficulties (Tob 12:3).

We continue our pilgrimage with faith in our hearts, with hope guiding us forward and love lighting up our way to fulfil God’s plan in our lives.

Service at Karunalaya to the naturally repugnant persons reveals the depth of commitment to a person- Jesus. Selfless service oriented other activities dot this newsletter. The Provincial Assembly, Dissemination of Chapter Decrees and Colloquium on Home Mission are all aimed at strengthening this commitment and keeping it unpolluted. Definitely our service makes a difference because of Jesus. We are His fragrance.

Recently, our schools celebrated the ‘Social Service Week’ opening the hearts of our students to the plight of the poor. They experienced the ‘Joy of Giving,’ while sharing the collections made during the Social Service Week, in the villages and with the underprivileged children. Our alumni Shri Paramjit Singh, the District and Sessions Judge, Bathinda, and Shri Charanjit Singh Mann, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mohali, who presided over the Annual Function at St Joseph’s Bathinda, remarked that they have the values learnt in school etched in their memory and life style, years after the subjects learnt at school have been forgotten. With nostalgia they shared with the audience how they are rooted in these values which are difficult to practice in the present scenario. These and the other news items are sure to give you much delight as you browse through. Go on then … Happy Christmas and a blessed New Year - 2017.

FROM THE FARFLUNG TERRAIN Sr Nora, Dumka, Jharkhand Bethany Convent Campus at Dumka bustles with life all through the day and late into the night as it houses 250 hostel children from the villages around. They study in the Hindi Medium School, located in the convent and hostel campus, managed by the Bethany Sisters and

owned by the diocese of Dumka. For usSisters Nora, Alice Kamala, Basanti Priya and Emilda Nino, spending night and day with the children is a matter of choice and gives lasting joy. It is my joy to share some of the happenings of the campus with you, readers.

BALIKA DIVAS and NATIVITY: Month of September heralded the birth day of Mother Mary and the Girl Child’s Day. The girls of the campus took pride in celebrating this day with much pomp exhibiting their talents in theatrics and prayerful and reflective sessions on the significance of girl child in the society.

KRUSVEER DAY: PRAYER, EUCHARIST, SACRIFICE and SERVICE are the four weapons of a KrusVeer, remarked Fr Dayal Lakra SJ, the Novice Master, and the Rector of Jesu Jaher, as 50 boys and girls marched to the altar following the flag bearer with their pledge paper in their hands. There was an aura of serenity and commitment on their faces.

Donning their traditional dress, the senior girls through their time-honored dance led the Bishop to the school hall.

The Bishop celebrated Holy Eucharist and spoke on the empowerment of girl children in particular. After the dinner, the girls danced in the open air to their heart’s content.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION: Motherly affection was showered on Sr Nora by the sisters and hostellers on her birthday, 20 September. The grand cultural programme exhibited by the hostellers guided by Sr Anna and Sr Gurpreet, the novices, has a few parallel.

TEACHERS’ DAY: Celebration of teachers’ day in this remote and not so eye catching place became a glamorous one when the senior day scholars and the hostel girls woke up before the cock crew and decked the campus to cheer the teachers as they entered the school early morning. In this out-lying area where computers have not taken the place of teachers, the students solely depend on their Gurus for information. In their traditional welcome they honoured their mentors with bouquets and gifts. Mild showers did not dampen their spirit. Rio Olympic Games and Olympic personalities came alive through the quiz conducted by Sr Nora and the novices. The teachers were very happy to receive a teachers’ day gift and enjoy a sumptuous meal arranged in their honour. Senior boys and girls felt proud of themselves when they received a pat on their backs for having done their job well.

HEALTH AWARENESS: A team of nursing students along with their Principal Sr Anjela from Ursula Nursing College took up a day’s Health Awareness Progamme for the students of primary section.

ORIENTATION FOR KRUSVEER CHILDREN: The laptop gifted by Sr Jyoti made the orientation programme a lively one. In a high spirit of motivation the boys and girls returned home giving 100% attendance in the second orientation programme.

DISSEMINATION OF XVI CHAPTER DECREE: On 30 September Sr Chantal, the Assistant Provincial Superior, and Sr Violet, the Provincial Councillor, with the help of inspiring power point presentation explained the XVI General Chapter Decrees to us.

VISITATION: The visitation by Sr Jyoti, the Provincial Superior, gave an opportunity to revive ourselves. For the hostellers too it was a time of special motivation and encouragement.

HOSTEL CONSTRUCTION: The herculean task of putting up a 2nd floor to the hostel started on 9 September with a short prayer service. At present the hostellers are also accommodated in the class rooms due to the shortage of space in the existing hostel. Fr Piyush, the Vicar General, blessed the construction workers, the tools and the site.

MEET THE three OCTOGENARIANS OF NORTH Province News Agency AN AWARD WINNER AT 97Sr Mirabelle Sr Mirabelle was conferred with the ‘Life Time Achievement Award’ by the District Education Officer, Dr Daljit Singh Cheema of Ludhiana for her selfless contribution to the people of Ludhiana through education and community service for over 51 years. All of us who have known Sr Mirabelle will remember her service to Bethany in the Mother House and subsequently in the Northern Mission and Ludhiana in particular.

Even now she prepares the hosts and particles required for the Holy Mass. A voracious reader she is, perched in the corner of her room in a chair she devours all the news papers and magazines and regrets that many others do not find time to go through the reading materials.

Recalling her past I must say that Sr Paupera was adroit in art and craft, knitting and caring for the little children in the hostel. During one of her earlier tenures at Ludhiana, she devotedly looked after the poor and economically backward children with motherly affection. With the same spirit she has served at Bathinda, Karnal and Faridabad. She is affectionately called Poppy by the sisters to whom she responds with a smile. Graceful old age days ahead, dear Sr Paupera.

HANDS AT WORK EVEN AT 82 SR EULALIA Excelling at culinary skills, Sr Eulalia finds it difficult to refrain from trying her hands at various dishes. Her hands are at work even at 82. Sr Eulalia has served the communities at many places in the north and south of India teaching home science, taking care of the hostellers and involving in home management.

Sr Eulalia is glad to share with us her experiences of prayer and past accomplishments. Her daily schedule at present consists of prayer, health walks, reading and visits to the families on getting an opportunity. Pastoral care of the families is very dear to her. She has a big list for intercessory prayers and spends long time at the feet of Jesus praying for everyone. Holiness can be achieved by doing the small

Promptness in prayer and presence in the chapel is her special quality. Her memory, will power and trust in God are gifts showered on her by God. Happy days ahead Sr Mirabelle.

GLOW OF GOOD GROOMING AND PRAYER- SR PAUPERA Till the other day Sr Paupera taught the slow learners of KG to Std III at Sacred Heart Convent School, Ludhiana. She also taught nursery rhymes and danced to the tune of these rhymes along with the students. Her good grooming and rootedness in prayer makes her recite rosaries unceasingly bringing a glow on her face. She is 86, yet manages her chores with ease. Prompt to the chapel for daily morning and evening prayers, she is an inspiration to many.

GOD IS PRESENT IN THEM Sr Gracy Vaz & Sr Josepha Minz, Karnal,Haryana The Jubilee Year of Mercy ended on 20 November 2016.

In this Jubilee year of Mercy, Pope Francis had time and again asked us to get involved in acts of Mercy. Being in Karunalaya gives us umpteen opportunity to manifest mercy. At present we have nine inmates. We take care of each and every need of these ladies, teach them certain skills, extend medical services and psychiatric help through the doctors and conduct literacy classes, games and spiritual development sessions. The positive responses they show delight us. More than doing things for them we spent time with them listening and speaking to them.

Sr Gracy Vaz is the Directress of Karunalaya and Sr Jospha Minz, Assistant Directress and Village Co-ordinator.

Karunalaya is the Memorial Project which marks the Founder’s Golden Death Anniversary to care for the women in distress. Though initiated in 2010 its activities took shape in 2012. Ladies from Nari Niketan, Karnal, are brought to Karunalaya, given shelter, vocational training and programmes to build self esteem. Thereafter through networking with various States of India, their address is traced and the women are put in touch with their families. From 2013 to 2016, nineteen women have been helped to reach their homes.

96th FOUNDATION DAY OF BETHANY AT BETHANY, MOHALI

Sr Laveena Pinto, Mohali, Punjab Sr Tara, Sr Martha Nancy and I form a small but energetic community at Mohali. Away from the posh surroundings, this year we decided to celebrate the Foundation Day of our Congregation with the people in the Badmajra village 12 kilometres away from our convent. The Catholics of this village are of labour class, who have migrated from Jharkhand, and find it difficult to attend Mass on Sundays on a regular basis due to lack of transport.

Looking into the eyes of these women we behold Jesus himself. God indeed is present in them.

GOOD NEWS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS AT SAMALKHA Sr Stella Dsouza, Samalkha, Haryana Formation of ‘Senior Citizens’ groups is one of the new initiatives taken during the past few months at Samalkha mission. So far eight groups of 25 senior ladies each are formed in eight of the villages such as Simbalgad, Dhera, Patti kalyana, Jourasi, Dikadala, Samalkha, Pawaty and Karkoli. Sr Stella D’ Souza, in her monthly meetings inspires them with tips for happy living and graceful growing in age.

The joints massage, paring nails, cleaning of ear, breathing exercise and water therapy have rejuvenated them. We are

The Core Values of Bethany Educational Society explained through a Power Point Presentation by Mr Vikram and Sr Shalom, the Prayer Sessions led by Sr Osline and Palak and Preeti, the students, Action Songs taught by Sr Amira Carvalho, games and role plays made the camp a bubbly one. A Great Luminary, the booklet on the life of Servant of God RFC Mascarenhas gifted by Sr Anita inspired the Bethany Champions to frame their maxim of Doing Good at all times after the example of RFC Mascarenhas.

They reminded us that the present moment is a ‘Kairos’ moment , an important and supreme moment to get back to the original spirit.

To live our life with authenticity, our Constitutions, Statutes, Decrees and Directives of the Provincial Chapter offer great help. Brief yet substantial and inspiring presentations given by them on the preamble and the 14 chapters of the XVI General Chapter Decrees helped us reflect on our life of prayer, community living, evangelical counsels, apostolates and servant leadership.

Bethany has given us a new identity to see the world with the eyes of Jesus, to love the world with the heart of Jesus, to reach out to the world with the love and compassion of Jesus and become credible witnesses. Buzz sessions and sharing enabled us to discover the higher purpose of our being a Bethany Sister and then to direct our energies towards it.

‘Dare to dream what you want to dream and dare to make your dream a reality,’ is what takes place here at Bethany Jeevan Dhara, Tanakpur, under the leadership of Sr Preeti Margaret. As in the past years we celebrated various events such as Van Mahotsav, Girl Child’s Day, Breast Feeding Day and on 4 September 2016, Day of St Mother Teresa of Kolkata. All these celebrations were attended by the Government Officials and Church Leaders.

Exhibitions in schools are also a regular feature of Jeevan Dhara Health Centre.

Safe Motherhood and Child Survival Programme is a much neglected area in Tanakpur. Hence to ward off mother and child death at delivery, a special Health Unit was started at Jeevan Dhara.

The sisters who opt for family apostolate should have deep spirituality, apostolic zeal, dedication, mature personality, professional efficiency, confidentiality, humanness, fortitude, compassionate love and inner freedom. Pastoral counseling in the families is the need of the hour.

Tanakpur being a poor area medical facilities are very meager. Palliative care is another initiative of Jeevan Dhara. A group of Health workers trained in palliative care has started their service with utmost dedication. Sr Jyoti, the Provincial Superior who visited Bethany, Tanakpur and inaugurated these two units along with Sr Arpan, the Co-ordinator of Social work and Sr Gracy D’Souza, the Provincial Procurator said “In this Year of Mercy we should discover new strength and deeper faith to get involved in such service”. She indeed motivated us to serve with more vigour.

PRE-NOVICES ON THEIR MISSION Sangeeta and Helena,Behala, Kolkota The ten Pre-novices of Sacred Heart Pre-novitiate, Behala, were chosen and blessed by God to be the messengers of His Good News to all. God strengthened us to be the hands, feet, eyes, ears and heart of Jesus to the people of Damruhat, a beautiful village of Jharkhand. The hospitality of our sisters at Damruhat, Fr Vincent the

In keeping with Pope Francis’s Pastoral sensitivity towards FAMILY and of the Decree of the XVI General Chapter of our Congregation, a seminar on Home Mission was convoked in the second week of October for all the sisters of the Province in two batches at Ish Kripa, Provincial House to revive our Pastoral Ministry. The growth of the nation takes place through the renewal of the families which is the basic unit of the society. The resource person Sr Archana of the CHF launched the seminar with the four basic questions on the vision, mission, and strategy of Jesus.

The aims of the Family Apostolate are to ennoble the families, by listening, understanding their problems and helping them to face the life situations with courage.

The resource person highlighted some of the problems faced by the families, according to the survey of 2010 by Catholic Church, such as mental disorder, alcoholism, family violence, broken family relationship, and negative consequences of media. In such a dark and gloomy world the compassionate love and the mission of the sisters through the family apostolate offers a ray of hope.

Parish Priest, and hostel children made us feel at home with the Santali people and their customs. Through the guidance of our Directresses Sr Jhansi and Sr Navina, Sr Gleva and catechists we could visit the families and be with the poor, lonely, illiterate and needy. By interacting with the people we realized their struggles and hardships in living their lives. The pain and difficulties they undergo to live in that remote area, moved us to action. Much before the Christmas Season started, we shared the spirit of Christmas with them.

THE UNDERPRIVELEGED AT SITANAGAR, LUDHIANA, EMPOWERED

JOY OF GIVING

With the primary focus on the children and women, the poor in the city of Ludhiana have a haven at the Community Centre of Bethany Sisters. The Centre provides education to children of low income group. 215 children eagerly attend the school daily at this place. In the industrial city of Ludhiana there are thousands of non-school going children.

I participated in the ‘Joy of Giving Week’ organized in our school. Donating things during the Social Service Week and sharing it with others specially the students of local Government Schools gave me a sense of contentment, a blissful feeling, making me realize that the ‘Joy of Giving’ is more lasting than the ‘Joy of Receiving.’

Besides children, 88 Vocational Trainees and 22 ITI students have an opportunity to attend the classes at the Community Centre. Student Enrichment Programme, Health Measures, Celebrations and Contests equip them with the skills required to live in a highly competitive society. Hundreds of students gone out of this centre can boast of a better value based life lived with dignity.

LOVE SEEKS OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE

A BLISSFUL FEELING

A group of us, the members of Social Service Club of our School had an opportunity to visit the slums and a Government School along with Sr Rose Margaret, Sr Priya Therese and a few teachers. I realized that these children value highly what we, children throw because our parents give us plenty. Definitely, I am going to look kindly and lovingly at the less privileged children and share with them whatever I can. The joy of giving is a great lesson that I am learning from my school.

Lighting Up Smiles

In this Year of Mercy, Sr Jyoti, our Provincial Superior, and her team found it fit to kick off one more hostel for the rural girls. The location is at Sacred Heart Convent campus,

Accompanied by Sr Lourdes and Sr Nalini we went to the slums on an afternoon. All of us were both excited and elated to be instruments of service. The best moments came when we got off the bus with the little ‘packages

Within a year we hope to provide opportunities for 20 girls to pursue education at Sacred Heart Convent School, Barnala. Prior to this almost a month ago, Foundation Stone for a Vocational Training Centre was laid by Sr Rose Margaret, the Superior of the Convent.

of joy’. A huge crowd of kids lined up near us. We started distributing the packages and the smiles on their faces were nothing but priceless. As they eagerly began to look through their goodies, we realized how much we take things for granted. We interacted with the kids, sang songs, clicked pictures, and discussed the forthcoming Diwali celebrations. Long after I had left the place, I could see their bright glimmering eyes and big smiles. I couldn’t stop thinking about how happy they were the entire day. These social activities definitely help the underprivileged. But the joy experienced by us was of a far greater measure.

AN INCREDIBLE STRUCTURE AT BATHINDA

DEVELOPING A WHOLESOME PERSONALITY Sr Shanti Luhar, Karnal, Haryana The Office Staff of BES Schools were chosen for a grooming session by Sr Chantal, the Assistant Provincial Superior, aiming to develop in them a wholesome and positive personality which encompasses spiritual renewal as well as human maturity.

Away from their daily chores with books and accounts, 28 Office Assistants from Karnal, Ludhiana, Bathinda and Barnala gathered at St Theresa’s Convent School, Karnal, from 9 to 11 December 2016 to attend this much awaited programme.

Sr Grace Maria, Barnala, Punjab As it completes its 55th year, St. Joseph’s Convent School Bathinda, has a state-of the art school building. This splendid construction started in July 2012 was completed in July 2016.

Thanks to Bethany Congregation and Bethany Educational Society that made this superb edifice a reality. The contribution made by Sr Helen, the Principal, in seeing to its completion is praiseworthy. As the oldest wing was razed to the ground those associated with the school in its earlier days shed a tear and the alumnae collected the bricks that held them in the classrooms years ago and shaped their present.

New hopes and dreams crowd the mind as one looks at the fine architecture of the magnificent school.

GREEN DIWALI Sr Isabella Agnes, Solan, HP Along with Sambhav, an NGO, the special way of celebrating Diwali by taking a road show by the students of St Luke’s Senior Secondary School, Solan, created a ripple in the city. Accompanied by the staff, the students put up a Road Show in five locations of the city. GREEN DIWALI, aiming to control the pollution in the city, came alive through Nukad Natak, that touched upon various issues such as Save the Rare Bird Species, Save the Environment, Abolish Child Labour and Eliminate Burning of Crackers during Diwali.

The splendor of the show remained undying as a huge crowd of various age groups and social strata witnessed it.

People supported this unique initiative of the school and applauded such a move taken by the school.

Warmed up by the loving welcome extended by Sr Ophelia Tauro, Superior of St Theresa’s Convent, the participants sustained their enthusiasm to become skilled at yoga, building self esteem, right motivations, positive thinking, and developing spiritual and emotional quotients.
