New Name - Same Mission! We are pleased to announce that through a unanimous vote on October 21, 2011, the Board of Trustees requested approval from the Province of New Brunswick and the General Board of The Wesleyan Church for the name of Bethany Bible College to be changed to Kingswood University. If approved, this will be only the second time that the College has changed names since its founding in 1945. A name change is a significant event in the life of an institution. It is a time for a clear-eyed assessment of the current reality and a hope-filled look to the future. The journey towards a new name included hundreds of survey responses, more than a thousand data points, and dozens of meetings. We met with consultants and researched possibilities. Most importantly, we prayed and we listened to people who care deeply about this ministry. We all agreed - changing the name would not change the mission. This institution exists to equip servant leaders for global impact. With that in mind, the Board wanted the name to meet the following criteria. It should • Present less of a barrier to graduates who desire to take the Gospel to creative / restricted-access countries, • Be meaningful to who we are and what we value as a distinctively Wesleyan institution,

• Welcome individuals preparing for ministerial service in other like-minded denominations, • Be unique to higher educational institutions in North America and in the increasingly important realm of online education, and • Be memorable, simple to spell, and easy to pronounce. Meeting all of the above criteria, Kingswood University was chosen in recognition of the historical significance that Kingswood has in our Wesleyan heritage. On April 2, 1739, John Wesley’s ministry took a dramatic turn when he broke with religious tradition, risked excommunication, and climbed a small hill in Kingswood, England, to preach the Gospel to nearly 2,000 coalminers. After that watermark day, he refused to allow his own preferences or the locked doors of the religious establishment to hinder the proclamation of the Gospel. Thousands were converted here and discipled in small groups. Wesley later launched Kingswood College, the first Methodist school for training future leaders. Historians cite Kingswood as Wesley’s most successful ministry field. John Wesley’s ministry at Kingswood emphasized bold evangelism, strong discipleship, and effective leadership training to bring the Gospel to those in greatest need. Pray with us that our Kingswood University will continue this legacy, faithfully proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and equipping Christ-like servant leaders to fulfill the Great Commission in the Spirit of the Great Commandment.

Queen’s Representative Visits Campus Illustrating the difference between a closed fist and an open hand, Lieutenant Governor Graydon Nicholas challenged students of Bethany Bible College to liberally give themselves in service to others. The representative of Queen Elizabeth II addressed students, faculty, staff, and the general public during the morning chapel service on September 15, 2011. Active in the Christian Life Community and a believer, the Lieutenant Governor encouraged Bethany students to work for the Lord. Showing his closed fist, Mr. Nicholas explained, “It’s easy to lead an isolated, comfortable life, but it’s immobilizing.” Opening his fist, he said, “Relax. Don’t be afraid. Reach out to help one another. You have the opportunity to be a prophet in your generation. Be the voice to challenge those who oppress, those who deny others their fundamental rights. Be the human instrument of Jesus.” Before speaking in chapel, the Lieutenant Governor attended a reception hosted by the College for community and area business leaders. Later, student leaders and invited guests enjoyed the opportunity to visit with Mr. Nicholas at a luncheon held in his honor. “We were honored to welcome the Lieutenant Governor to Bethany Bible College, giving our students the opportunity to learn from his life of community service and deep personal faith,” said President Mark Gorveatte. “We were also delighted to be able to provide this special event to the Sussex community.”

BBC Goes Online with Classes

BBC Provides 64 One for Another Scholarships Last year Bethany Bible College took a step of faith. For every freshman student that enrolled this fall, the College promised to provide a full tuition scholarship for an African ministerial student attending one of the Wesleyan theological institutions in Africa. This pilot project, named One for Another, was formed in partnership with Global Partners to respond to Africa’s growing need for trained church leaders. With gratefulness to God, the College is excited to announce that BBC will provide 64 full tuition scholarships for 32 African ministerial students at Xai Xai Wesleyan Bible College in Mozambique and 32 students at Gbendembu Wesleyan Bible School in Sierra Leone. These scholarships will fully fund the tuition for both colleges. Through One for Another, Bethany students can see their own campus community impacting the global Church. For further updates, go to oneforanother.ca.

This fall Dr. Arthur W. Maxwell launches Bethany’s first online class by teaching Wesleyan Church History and Discipline. www.bbc.ca Freshmen Perspectives After learning about BBC from missionaries Drew (’98) and Amy (Inman ’01) Donovan, Lauren worked ten jobs over the last eight months - sometimes working a night shift right after working the day shift at another job - to earn the money needed to attend BBC. Arriving on campus, she said, “I am blown away at how warmly I have been welcomed. The people here have phenomenal hearts for Jesus and His people.” Lauren Kerr Auckland, New Zealand

As a teen, Mexican-born Carolina came to the realization that externals did not give her a personal relationship with Christ. She felt God leading her to go to Bible school but did not know where to go, so she searched on Google. Wanting a program that would help her share her faith and serve others, Carolina discovered Bethany’s Praxis degree. “I am so blessed by the opportunity to come here. I have already grown in Christ!” Carolina Peters Almer, Ontario
