Real Church Loves Well “What do I want in a church?” We are right to ask this question, provided we do so with an open Bible. In His book, God describes in great detail what He desires in every local church. We are right to want what God wants. And we are right to test what we want against what God wants. Among the essential qualities for a church to be a real church, love leads the list. Love is a cornerstone of authenticity for any church. “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be

burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:1–3, ESV) Many elders would exult to lead a church that had prophetic powers. Not Paul. Many pastors would rejoice in a church full of biblical insight and faith to move mountains. Not Paul. Many would be happy with a church full of people who gave every dollar to help the church serve God in the community. Not Paul. Many would be overwhelmed by a church full of people so committed to Jesus that they literally die for Him. Not Paul. Paul says, “Be a real church! Lean in to one another. Love each other deeply! If you do not have love, it does not matter what else good is happening.” Continued on page 2
