Rabbi’s Reflections SHOWING THANKS As a community, Beth Judea has observed Thanksgiving together with our Christian neighbors for many years, and we will do so again on Sunday November 20th when we once again take part in the Interfaith Thanksgiving program. It will be held at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary Parish, 10 N. Buffalo Grove Rabbi Jeff Pivo Road. The program features choral pieces sung by children and adults of all ages and faiths, as well as a musical Perhaps the reason Thanksgiving is so popular is puppet show and (my favorite) a bell choir. This that it is so loosely defined: a meal marking annual event is a wonderful model of people of gratitude. Anyone can and should express different faiths working together to present and gratitude, and everyone eats. What we eat and enjoy shared time in a religious setting that how we express gratefulness will vary from table embraces our diversity. to table, and that enables us all to do so honestly and personally. A very Jewish approach to Our tradition is to bring a small food donation to gratitude is to feel it and express it even when we the Thanksgiving program that will be provided to area food pantries. This year has to a wonderful variety of Jewish practices and already been a good one for us all, and I look constant innovation. In America, Jews have forward to the rest of the year providing even more found success in all spheres of American life and opportunities to feel, and to show, gratitude. Having just completed close to a month of Jewish holidays, we now look ahead to Thanksgiving at the end of the month. A truly shared American celebration, Thanksgiving brings families and friends together across the boundaries that sometimes divide us: religion, class, even politics (and we’ll truly need to be brought together this year when it comes to politics).

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Ari Bryan Melnick will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Shabbat morning, November 5, 2016. Ari is a huge sports fan. When not at school, he can be found playing baseball with his friends or his travel team, where he is a catcher. He also plays football and basketball and loves Chicago sports teams, especially the Cubs and Bears. Ari resides with his parents Marcus Melnick and Heather Melnick and his younger brother, Eli. Jillian Hope Arnold will be called to the Torah on Saturday morning, November 12, 2016 as a Bat Mitzvah. Jillian is a seventh grader at Twin Groves Middle School. When she isn’t in school, doing homework, in Hebrew School, or preparing for her Bat Mitzvah, she enjoys playing soccer for Schwaben AC in Buffalo Grove. There she reliably displays her talent for tenacious and tough defense to help her team succeed. She also loves hanging with her family and many great friends. Jillian is grateful for her all of her wonderful family and friends who have molded the person she has become with their love, friendship, humor, and support. Thanks to the Twin Grove friends, her soccer team, Camp CHI buds, and the Jew Crew for such great times. Special thanks and love to Jillian’s parents who always love and support her in every conceivable way and to her brother, Seth, who is her biggest fan and closest buddy and is always there to keep her grounded. Jillian would also like to thank Rabbi Pivo, Hazzan Weisberg, all of her CBJ teachers, and Andrea Dickson for their tutelage. She looks forward to honoring them with her participation in her Bat Mitzvah service and to becoming an adult in the CBJ community.

A Hearty Mazel Tov to all our November B’nei Mitzvah

Samuel Micah Gold will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, November 19, 2016. Sam is a seventh grader at Aptakisic Junior High School in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. Sam loves anything and everything that has to do with basketball: stats, rosters, player names, player colleges, etc. But most of all, he loves playing basketball. Sam has played basketball for many years now. He has also played for multiple travel teams. Currently, Sam plays travel/AAU for Man Up/Fundamental U, school basketball for Aptakisic Junior High, and is looking forward to a second opportunity to play Feeder basketball for Stevenson High School. Sam has also spent two summers at B’nai B’rith Beber Camp in Mukwonago, Wisconsin. When he first went there in 6th grade, he wasn’t sure he was going to like it. But two summers later, and 9 inches taller, he now says he has had “the most fun ever in his life” at Beber Camp. For his mitzvah project, Sam is collecting sports equipment and school supplies for the University of Chicago Charter School Woodlawn Campus. He was introduced to the school and its needs by his current basketball coach. At the time this was written, Sam had raised over $500 and collected basketballs, basketball nets, jump ropes, footballs, and nearly 50 copies of novels, such as The Giver and Artemis Fowl. Sam is looking forward to sharing this special day with his parents, Mindy and Neal, his brother, Eli, grandparents Len and Bonnie Gold, grandmother Terry Minnen, and great-grandmother Faith Minnen. He is also excited that aunts, uncles, cousins, great aunts, great uncles, and friends are able to join him from all over the country, including Illinois, Tennessee, New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Florida, Georgia, California, Missouri, and Wisconsin. Sam and his family would like to thank Rabbi Pivo and Hazzan Weisberg for all their help preparing him for this special day. He would also like to thank his many Hebrew school teachers who have contributed to his Jewish education. A special thanks goes to Kim Abern for her extraordinary support and instruction in helping Sam prepare for becoming a Bar Mitzvah.

Religious Education

Anna Besser Education Director

Many of us have a difficult time talking to our children about God. The questions children have about God are very similar to the ones we ask ourselves. “What does God look like? Who are God’s parents? If God dwells everywhere, is God in my pocket? If God is so powerful, why doesn’t God stop bad things from happening?” Just because we are internally wrestling with these questions ourselves, we should not shut out our children when they ask similar questions. Rather be honest. Say that there are no clear-cut answers and that you are struggling to find answers. Your child will realize that you are human and don’t have all the answers. Being honest can also help draw your family closer together by searching for answers together.

Talking about God is not a conversation that begins and ends with one discussion. It is an ongoing dialogue that will have its highs and lows throughout the growing up child-years. Here are some ideas for ways you can start a conversation with your child about God. 1.

Bring up the subject. Studies show that children develop some concept of God by the age of 6. Let them think, speculate, dream and imagine. Asking simple questions such as, “Do you ever talk about God in school? What have you heard about God from your friends? Do you think about God? When? Are there questions about God that you would like to ask me?” will begin a healthy dialogue.

2.

Read and tell Bible stories, midrashic legends and incidents from your own life about God. Stories allow children to form concepts of character. By using descriptive language, children can begin to manipulate abstract ideas.

3.

Don’t be defensive when challenged. Reflective children – especially adolescents – will challenge our religious ideas. Welcome the challenge. Recognize that there are many reasons to doubt God’s existence or loving kindness. Engage in a discussion not a diatribe.

4.

Learn good answers. There are no conclusive answers to questions about God. Yet there are good answers. Providing facile answers that may satisfy a 6 year old will be unacceptable as the child gets older and worldlier. It is better to not be completely understood than to be misrepresented in the complexity of the issues.

To start you off your lasting dialogue, try an exercise, called Remembering What We Have Lost from Teaching Your Children About God, by David J. Wolpe. It’s an exercise for adults. You can do this alone, with your spouse or friend. The exercise is to make a list of things you once believed in that you no longer believe. Can you remember when you lost belief in them and why? Was it painful? The belief can be a fairy tale, like believing in Superman, or it might be political, religious or philosophical, like believing in the goodness of all people. You may choose a personal or family belief, such as the belief in an all-wise parent. As a last step, ask yourself if you could imagine believing it again, perhaps in another form. Having completed this exercise, you might find it interesting to try it out on your children and see what beliefs they have lost along the way as well. B’Shalom, Anna Besser

Classes at the Board of Jewish Education Early Childhood Center at Beth Judea are well under way. We kicked off the school year with a picnic on our playground and a Family Ice Cream Social. Children in all our classes have experienced Rosh Hashanah. While our two year olds sorted apples and determined if they would sink or float, our three year olds focused on the many colors and sizes of apples and tasted them to discover their differences. Our Pre-K class was delighted to have Cantor Weisberg blow the shofar for them, where they then studied the different sounds the shofar makes. After making their own shofarot, the Pre-K class went to the River Trails Nature Center to learn about how the honey they dip their apples in is made.

ADULT EDUCATION Hebrew Classes Torah Reading Taught by Hazzan Weisberg How and why did our cantillation system come about? Once you learn the different signs, their sounds and how they structure each sentence of Torah, you will be able to chant the text with accuracy and conviction. This is a wonderful and useful skill and can be a meaningful way to participate in synagogue life. You should be able to read Hebrew with some fluency, and carry a tune; you will NOT need to read music. COST: textbook $25; an iPad or smartphone is recommended Tuesday Evenings; 6:15 – 7:15 pm Sept. 6, 2016 – March 21, 2017 (No classes in Oct., Nov. 22, Dec.13, 27, Jan. 3)

Ulpan 1 Taught by Lee Goldberg

In this course, students will develop reading fluency and understanding of Hebrew word and sentence structures. We will then move into Hebrew grammar and learn to converse: how to order food in a restaurant, shop, and tell the doctor what hurts and have fun doing it, with songs, word games, and imagery. The ability to read the alephbet is required. Textbook Fee: $20 Thursday evenings; 8:00 – 9:00 pm Oct. 6 – May 18, 2017

Ulpan 2 Taught by Lee Goldberg

In this course we will continue from where we left off last year. We'll continue learning Hebrew grammar while learning to order food in a restaurant, shop, and tell the doctor what hurts and have fun doing it, with songs, word games, and imagery. The ability to read the aleph-bet is required. The morah, teacher, Lee Goldberg, taught Hebrew for more than 20 years. She thinks that Hebrew is the perfect language and loves to excite others to learn it and enjoy it! Textbook Fee: $85 Thursday evenings; 6:30 – 7:30 pm Sept. 8, 2016 – May 18, 2017

Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea, by the time you read this, Sukkot will be over and the Sukkah will be dismantled. Before any of this was possible, we had a great team of people to make it all happen. Starting with Sandy Victor, whose original design is one we’ve used for many years. He also rebuilt several components that had worn out over time and directed us in this years’ assembly. Kudos to Sandy! We also had a great crew of worker bees who all banded together and got the Sukkah built solidly. Scott Rosen, Evan Rumack, Lou Rabin, Norm Kurtz, Eric Yegelwel, Dan Landau, Arnie Bender, Larry Bender, Craig Cohn, Ron Friedman, Liana Rosen, Brandt Rosen, Jerry Sakol, and our beloved Manuel Velazquez all assisted in the construction. One week later, our own students of Beth Judea all assisted in decorating the inside. (I didn’t catch all their names) but Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, Aleph, and Bet classes, along with their teachers and assistants, all pitched in. Also present, were Sandy Victor, Evan Rumack, and Jerry Sakol to help with knots, stapling, and ladder work. If it seems like the whole article is about the Sukkah, it’s really about how beautiful our Shul is when we all come together as a community. From some of the youngest to some of the almost oldest. I am extremely proud to be a part of this wonderful slice of humanity. There are some upcoming events that should be noted for November. 11-1-2016: Hebrew Literacy 1 classes start. This is a great opportunity to start learning Hebrew or refreshing what you’ve learned in the past. Eric Yegelwel and I teach this class. It is easy, fun, and very rewarding. You are never too old or too young to start. We laugh, sing, spiritually connect, and oh yes, we learn to read some of the prayers for a Friday night Shabbat Service. If you

The Word - November 2016

even think you may be interested, please come. Tuesdays at 8:00. The book fee is 30 dollars. We look forward to seeing you there. 11-1-2016: Last day to get your deposit in for a splendid time in Lake Geneva. Our Men’s Club Retreat is fast approaching- January 21st and 22nd. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this event. Space is limited so make haste! You can look at the flyer, or call me @ 847-459-7639 if you have any questions. 11-4-2016: Our next Men’s Club meeting @ 8:00 in the Conference Room. 11-13-2016: Chanukah Candle Packing will be in the vestibule area @ 10:00 am. The more the merrier, the quicker we go. Casual dress is required. 11-19-2016: Lieberman Nursing Home Shabbat Service. Every fourth Saturday, we are blessed with the opportunity to do a beautiful mitzvah. Some of our Men’s Club members go to the Lieberman center and help the residents celebrate Shabbat in their synagogue. This is actually one of my favorite activities connected to Men’s Club. If you are interested, call me or Sandy Ramras for details. Wishing you and your family a happy healthy Thanksgiving. Jerry Sakol Men’s Club President
