Congregation Beth Judea Mission Statement Congregation Beth Judea is a welcoming egalitarian synagogue whose mission is to create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members. Consistent with the principals of the Conservative movement, we embrace Torah and our responsibility to serve and support the greater Jewish community, the community at large, the United States of America and the State of Israel.

NOTES FROM THE CANTOR Great things are indeed happening at Congregation Beth Judea! Generous financial support for the Religious School is putting communal involvement within reach of even more young families. From our Kinder-Club program, where fees and tuition are included in your CBJ membership, to Shabbat Sheni, where Religious School aged children are invited to participate meaningfully in our Friday night services once a month: this is a community which values and invests in the next generation. CANTOR BAT-SARAH

Our Gimmel (5th) and Dalet (6th) classes just spent a wonderful weekend learning Torah and experiencing Shabbat as a community, an experience which has helped to prepare them for their class Shabbat in January.

I am especially proud of how involved our teens were in providing fabulous High Holiday experiences for the students. Everything really went beautifully, with a nice mix of tefillah and activities. I just want to offer my profound gratitude to all of the very many people who made this Holiday season such a beautiful and meaningful time. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Thank you also to the Men’s Club for the fabulous sukkot for the students to decorate, and to Sunday morning minyanaires who welcome the 7th graders with such generosity when they help to lead minyan. I’m looking forward to the return of Jr. Yad Squad this year. This is an optional class for 4th – 6th graders who want to learn to chant Torah. I will also be teaching Torah Trope as part of Adult Education. These classes will be held in person most Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm. Watch your emails for all the possibilities offered by Beth Judea to deepen your connection to Judaism and the Beth Judea family. B’simcha / With Joy!

Annual Hanukkah “7+1” Gift Drive

Looking for a Way to Give Back this Hanukkah? Join CBJ in our Annual “7+1” Gift Drive for Jewish Child and Family Service

Wish Lists are Back!!! JCFS Chicago is proud to continue the tradition of providing holiday gifts for their youth clients who receive counseling, foster care, respite, and other essential support services. CBJ will continue our tradition of “7+1,” Seven gifts for your family, One for a needy child. And this year you can shop for gifts or give real gift cards.

Sign up today! Contact Ronna Leibach at bows23@gmail.com ▪ We will match you with a child (or children) and provide you with that child’s wish list. Please include how many children you would like to buy for, and any age or gender preference. ▪ If you choose to do a gift card, you can purchase it from the synagogue and do two mitzvot! Contact Lisa at lneiman@bethjudea.org ▪ Recommended donations are $50 per child. You do not need to buy everything on the wish list. ▪ If you prefer to make a smaller donation, gift cards, games, books and art supplies are always needed. ▪ Gifts should be new and unwrapped. Please put all the gifts for one child in the same bag, and be sure to tape the wish list on the outside of the bag. The information on the tag is important. ▪ Please do not purchase “R” rated movies, video games, or music with Parent advisory labels. Please drop off all donations at the synagogue by Monday, November 28. If you are later than that, you can drop them off directly at JCFS Kersten, 255 Revere Drive, Suite 200, Northbrook.

With your help, children in need will see their wishes become reality this holiday season!

CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to . make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog. We Would Like To Know

Hesed Committee

An Important Announcement WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.

CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed Committee is not just for birthday or anniversary calls (although we enjoy making them!) We are also here to help when you are struggling, feeling lonely, or ill. As the pandemic winds down, we hope we can start visiting those of you who feel the need for more support. Until then, we would like to stay in touch with you by phone. However, we can’t help you unless you let us know you need help. Please contact us at hesed.cbj@gmail.com, Evan Rumack at evanbr1@comcast.net, or Marilyn Green-Rebnord at megx150@comcast.net to let us know what you need. We and our committee are here for you.

FOR A LIST OF EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS, AGENCIES AND RESOURCES click here

Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.

You Make A Difference We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved.

If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below:
