President’s Message

SIDNEY MATHIAS CBJ PRESIDENT

I am still filled with joy and continue to be spiritually uplifted from our recent "Shabbat Under the Stars" which was held at a new location this year, the JCC Elaine Frank Apache Day Camp. We had over 300 people for our BBQ dinner and then a wonderful shabbat service conducted by Rabbi Zimbalist and Hazzan Ezring, and our Beth Judea band. So many people attended, and our diversity - from young to "older," families to singles, long term members to prospective members - created a beautiful group. With the spiritual message of our Rabbi, the vibrant and creative music from our Hazzan and band, the beautiful evening, and, of course, our shared Erev Shabbat Meal, the setting was perfect to have this wonderful celebration. Thank you to all who attended and helped to make this evening happen!

I can't believe that summer will be ending soon, and our high holidays will be commencing shortly. We are so excited to welcome Rabbi Zimbalist and Cantor Ezring as they join Rabbi Lifshitz and Cantor Weisberg to lead us on our holy days. We look forward to sharing our new beginnings with joy and ruach! We will start the High Holiday season with study, prayer, and dessert at our Selichot services on September 1st at Congregation Beth Judea. A discussion starts at 9:00 p.m. followed by a desert reception at 10:00 p.m. and services at 10:30 p.m. If you are planning on joining us, please call the CBJ office at 847-634-0777 or email lneiman@bethjudea.org. Our Tot High Holiday Services are on Rosh Hashanah Day 1, Monday, September 10th and on Yom Kippur, Wednesday, September 19th. Both services are from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. at Buffalo Grove High School. These services are free and open to the community, but reservations are REQUIRED by contacting the CBJ office by phone or email. The services are being led by Brad Egel and Erica Veronie. Our Community Yizkor service will be held on Yom Kippur Day, Wednesday, September 19th at 12:45 p.m. at Buffalo Grove High school in the cafeteria following the family service. Everyone is welcome. Congregation Beth Judea Men's Club is sponsoring several events during September. As part of our High Holiday spirit, we will have Project Isaiah, sponsored by Men’s Club, for our congregants. Please take a bag as you leave services on Rosh Hashanah and return it filled with food on Kol Nidre, September 18th. Please be cognizant of the "needed" items. All food is donated to the Ark. Volunteers are needed to help hand out and collect bags. Please call Fred Rabinowitz at 847-398-5488 or email rabino49@aol.com. Project Isaiah gives life to the Jewish traditions of tzedakah (charity) and tikkun olam (repairing the world.) Our Men's Club is again building the Sukkah at Congregation Beth Judea. Please come help them on Sunday, September 16th between 10:00 a.m. and noon. Then, please come and help take down the Sukkah on Sunday, October 7th between 10:00 a.m. and noon. RSVP to Ron Friedman at r.friedman@sbcglobal.net. Also, "Steak, Scotch and TRIVIA" will be held on Sunday, September 23rd beginning at 4:30 p.m. at CBJ.
