C-Term Issue March 2022

Eta Tau Newsletter State of the Chapter Dear Brothers and Friends of Beta, As recent alumni and current brothers can attest C-term always seems to follow the way of the weather and this year was no different. The beginning of the term was cold and sharp with campus-wide Covid restrictions and an increase in mental health concerns on campus. It was a difficult beginning of the term for many at WPI but through the support of our brotherhood and even of alumni and friends of Beta our chapter continued on. Soon the warmth of spring shone through the dreary skies and with that sprouted thirteen new brothers of Rho Class and three budding new members of Sigma Class! Thanks to the guidance of our new Education Chairman Adam Ferrarotti we were able to initiate thirteen brilliant and promising brothers into the chapter and I personally look forward to reporting on their efforts in the following Newsletters.

Furthermore, I look forward to our newest Sigma Class which we gained from our successfully run Spring Rush by our Recruitment Chairman Amitai Erfanian. The chapter is excited about their education and cannot wait to envelop them into our brotherhood. Speaking of brotherhood, with a decrease in Covid restrictions brothers have been able to come together at the house both casually and during the brotherhood events hosted by our new Brotherhood Chairmen Joshua Barney. This past term we were able to get together at the house and watch the Superbowl along with enjoying a post-chapter spaghetti dinner and movie where we discussed the risk management nightmare portrayed in the movie Animal House. In the end, our chapter, being well-weathered through our brotherhood, withstood the challenges of this term and emerged ever strong and excited for what our future holds in D-Term! A Year of Beta This year was a mix of old and new traditions. Brothers got to sing again in chapter, and messing up Gemma Nostra. With the house fully open, brothers got to come by to relax and really make the beta house into a true Beta Home. We were able to have start doing in-person community service and philanthropies events like the Boys and Girls Club and Beta Clue. We had a great rush with plenty of freshmen and sophomores coming in to visit us. And speaking of rush...

This past fall, the recruitment committee did an amazing job running the multitude of events that brought about the beautiful Rho class. The “main event” this year was our highly successful Knight Wings event. In this event, brothers invited new members to the house to try the various wing sauces. The house was split into two sides, the left side being the gross flavors and the right side being the spicy flavors. The worst of these sauces included the Ghost Pepper hot sauce and the Sardine Mayo gross sauce. Another successful event from this past rush was the Flick-Fil-A event in which brothers and new members enjoyed some chicken sandwiches along with Monte Python and the Holy Grail. Overall, the 2021 fall rush was quite fun and exciting bringing us a great class of new brothers. Now the recruitment committee is off planning the 2022 Fall Rush. Good luck brothers, we look forward to the great events you will run going forward!

Apple Review By Sean Merone Beginning with my personal favorite, the Minnieska apples are the result of a cross between the Honeycrisp and Minnewashta (Trademarked under the Zestar! brand) Apples in Minnesota in late 2009. It was grown under the watchful eyes of the University of Minnesota’s horticulturists, where it was trademarked under the name, SweeTango. While this has ensured the consistency of quality in the apples grown, it has also made it difficult to conveniently find and purchase the fruit year-round. It's unfortunate but some concessions must be made, I suppose. But that’s enough of the legalities of the apple. In truth, all that matters is the quality of the apple. The SweeTango obtains the best traits from both of its parent cultivars. From the Minnewashta, it receives an above-average size and a firm texture that any good apple would benefit from. From the Honeycrisp, it receives the incredible crispness that defines one of the most popular apple cultivars, which was expanded through genetic modification to enlarge the cell structure of the apple variety, the final result being the single most satisfying apple to bite through. In addition to these wonderful gifted traits, the SweeTango is incredibly flavorful, delivering a sweet and tangy taste (hence the Trademarked name) that has been compared to spiced apple cider or brown sugar. Though that is not the end to its amazing qualities, as it is a wonderful cooking apple as well, retaining its flavor and firmness while not overpowering any other apples used in dishes, whether it's tarts, crisps, or the traditional pie.

Crispness: 10/10 Cost Efficiency: 7/10 Texture: 9/10

Cooking Utility: 8/10

Size: 8/10

Taste: 10/10

Final Rating: 9/10

Cookin with the President Chicken Orzo Soup 01

Step 1 Boil water and place in chicken breasts till cooked through.

02

Step 2 In the mean time cut up onions, celery, and carrots and put in pot with olive oil on medium/high until sauteed

03

Step 3 Once chicken is cooked through take it out of the pot and shred it or cut into smaller piece to be put in the soup later.

04

Step 4 Once the vegetables are sautéed efficiently add the chicken broth and canned tomatoes together in pot and set to high till boiling.

05

Step 5 Once the soup is boiling add chicken and orzo and stir intermittently in order to not have the orzo stick to the bottom of the pot. While this is being done you can season with salt and pepper to taste.

06

Step 6 Once orzo is fully cooked you are ready to serve!
