ON THE COVER

The Yiantsos Family at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Upper Darby

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

I am ready to March into Marple Spring 2024, and more, to see the colors Spring has in store. And while this new March issue of Marple Friends & Neighbors may be arriving in Winter, I guarantee your month-long read may start off with weather freezing, but end with a new Spring season. Spring will have sprung!

Already noticeably sprung up, on the busy western border of Marple Township, at West Chester Pike and Media Line Road, is a new, similar business open now as many Reader Leaders let me know. And, with as many readers traveling Media Line Road daily have noticed that similar business now opened under new ownership, everyone reading this now can know which business I’m referring to, by simply turning over to our Back Cover!

Yes, we have a new Back Cover Sponsor - Ed Hurley, of Media Line Collision, located at the same familiar Marple landmark building shop from which Marple Newtown residents have depended for auto collision repairs for more than 50 years.

We all know the building. We see it every time we drive up Media Line Road towards MNHS, or down Media Line Road to drive West Chester Pike into Broomall. Think. Picture the building. Now, turn to our back cover to see if you were correct - the shop building of the NOW OPEN under new management, Media Line Collision.

Thank you, Ed Hurley, for coming to town and for stepping right up to serve Marple residents as a major new Back Cover Sponsor of our hometown magazine. Now we have a hometown Sponsor for all manner of auto collision body damage repair as an authorized repair service provider for Farmers, Liberty Mutual and State Farm, and more.

Spring has already sprung with a new major Sponsor for our hometown magazine. With those warming thoughts, I know this new issue will help you March into Spring this month, even from your favorite comfy chair.

Bob Blaisse

Publisher

P.S. Have some fun with me this month. When ordering your mulch and topsoil from our Sponsor who reminds us: “We Cover The Ground in Marple Newtown.” Call Seth Pancoast and tell him I assured you, that if you ordered mulch or topsoil in time for Easter, he would personally deliver it to you himself! (See the S. Pancoast Topsoil & Mulches ad on page 19.) Happy Easter Everyone!

Dear Residents,

Welcome to March! While Mother Nature may be slow to bring us true spring weather, it's no illusion that we’re all sensing spring is on the horizon. If you have spring fever, our calendar has plenty of family friendly events to get out of hibernation.

Spring also means baseball and this month we’re highlighting MTLL’s Challenger League, who are kicking off their second season. In this issue, you’ll meet the Yiantsos family, whose love of family and community shines through in everything they do.

Our Q&A with Dr. Marc Belitsky of Broomall Total Health Center answers reader questions about how chiropractic care can treat more than just back pain. And, music is in the air this month as MN Drama brings Mamma Mia! to the Marple Newtown High School stage.

We are always looking for more Marple families, individuals and organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at hstupak@bestversionmedia.

Let’s Smile Baby Boomers!

If you are between 60 and 80 years of age, you are a Baby Boomer. That means that on average:

• The majority of you still have your natural teeth, unlike all previous generations.

• You’ll live an average of 34 years longer than your grandparents.

• You’re a member of the wealthiest generation in American history.

While all of these facts are very good news for the average American, individually, we must make healthy and timely choices in our own lives to make them a personal reality. The healthier you keep your teeth and gums, the more you can lower your risk of diseases that can either shorten your life or reduce your quality of life. Additionally, your dental needs will be less costly at a time in life when most Americans are either retired or planning to retire in the next few years.

So, here’s the bad news. Researchers have identified an everincreasing list of diseases that have been connected to chronic gum disease and dental decay.

• Heart disease: According to the Academy of Periodontology, people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to have coronary artery disease.

• Alzheimer’s disease: Researchers from the University of Central Lancashire have identified Porphyromonas Gingivitis (a bacterium associated with chronic periodontal disease) in the brain tissues of dementia patients.

• Stroke, Diabetes, and breast cancer: Each of these diseases has been shown to have a connection to the presence of untreated periodontal disease in recent years.

Additionally, failing to protect your oral health can have a very negative effect on your overall health and well-being. Failing dentition leads to the inability to chew, gastrointestinal problems, malnutrition, dental pain, impaired speech, low self-esteem and social isolation.

Now the good news: If you take care of your teeth and gums, all these risk factors go away! Periodontal disease and dental decay are among the most easily preventable conditions of the human body. There are several important and cost-effective daily habits that baby boomers must develop and maintain through their retirement years. These include brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste and a soft bristle brush. Use an electric brush if your manual dexterity is limited. Brush your tongue daily; it is a huge plaque reservoir. In addition, floss once daily or use an interdental brush. Keep dentures and partials meticulously clean as well.

• Seek dental treatment immediately when you notice bleeding gums, unusual swelling in the mouth or unusual tooth pain or sensitivity. Early treatment will minimize the damage, pain and cost of most dental problems.

• See your dentist twice yearly for professional cleaning and preventive check-ups.

If you follow this simple prescription for good dental health, now and throughout your retirement years, you will have a very good reason to smile! M

Student of the Month

The March Casey’s Public House Student of the Month is Nick Rauso, who is a Senior at Marple Newtown High School (MNHS), and also received a Certificate of Achievement and a $25 gift card from Casey’s Public House, our Sponsor of this program.

Like many students graduating this year, the Covid pandemic and ensuing lockdown limited in person school and activities for Nick. Nick made the best of it and was excited to play

on the MNHS Ice Hockey Team during the 2022 - 23 season, but then he had to make the hard decision not to continue with Ice Hockey since it conflicted with the after-school and weekend classes needed to achieve his goal of attaining his Fire 1 certification.

It was Junior year when Nick learned of and decided to enroll in the Delaware County Technical School (DCTS) and their Emergency Protective Services program. This meant he took his high school required classes each morning, and then spent the afternoon at DCTS’ Folcroft Campus to learn more about Firefighting, Policing and EMS, and he earned certifications such as OSHA 1O and CPR.

In August of 2022, Nick joined the Newtown Square Fire Company, Station 41, as a junior volunteer firefighter and joined the “Probie” (probationary) class with other junior volunteers, where they attended weekly classes to start to learn firefighting techniques. Nick has enrolled in multiple online and in-person certification classes, including Vehicle Rescue Training as well as Fire 1 class, and this past December, Nick earned his “Black Shield” and graduated from Junior status to an interior firefighter. In 2023, Nick volunteered for over 300 duty hours in service of his community. You’ve been a true asset to our community Nick and we thank you for your service. M

Here’s what we look for - Students from grades 7 to 12 who demonstrate excellence in service to school, friendship, community or area groups, and reside within the geographical borders of the Marple, Newtown Square or Edgmont (no matter what school they attend, or if they are homeschooled). Submit your nomination, highlighting what makes them so amazing, to LJeffries@ BestVersionMedia.com. Academic or athletic excellence is not required.

Know a terrific teen who should be our next Student of the Month?

The Overlooked Foundation for Solar Success

Solar is a great investment for many reasons. It allows you to reduce your carbon footprint, save on energy bills over time and protect yourself from inflation. When considering solar, don’t forget about a crucial and often overlooked component: your roof!

A good roof is the foundation of your solar system. It needs to be properly installed and in good condition. Otherwise, you might end up with a leaky roof, a voided warranty or a costly removal and reinstallation of your solar panels.

Here are some tips to make sure your roof is ready for solar energy:

1. Get a Roof Inspection - A qualified roofer can assess the condition of your roof and tell you if it needs any repairs or replacements. Solar panels are warranted for 25 years, so you want your roof to last at least that long too. If your roof is nearing the end of its lifespan, it might be better to replace it before installing solar panels. This eliminates the hassle and expense of removing and reinstalling your solar panels later.

2. Waterproofing Is Key - Attaching solar panels involves making holes in your roof. There are dozens, and in some cases, hundreds of penetrations. Make sure the solar contractor knows how to seal these holes properly with proven flashing products and methods. Improper flashing can result in leaks.

3. Check your Warranty - Installing solar can impact your roof’s warranty. Some manufacturers or roofing installers may void it, leaving you high and dry if any roof issues pop up. To avoid this, talk to your roofing contractor before going solar. Get their approval in writing to be safe. You don’t want to risk losing your warranty over a simple misunderstanding.

4. Choose the Right Contractor - Opt for a contractor who can handle both your roof and solar. This gives you a single source of warranties for both, and no one can pass the blame if something goes wrong. A high-quality solar installation can only be achieved when there is also a strong knowledge of roofing systems.

Solar and roofing truly go hand in hand. In a perfect world you should hire a contractor who specializes in both. Replacing your roof before a solar installation can be an unexpected expense, but in many cases, the savings from solar will offset the cost of the new roof. Even if a roof replacement is not required, considering both aspects of the project will save you from some serious headaches in the long run. M

WDr. Marc Belitsky, Clinical Director of Broomall Total Health Center

The Doctor Is In!

hen many of us think of chiropractic care, a common misconception is that chiropractors only treat back pain. But did you know that although chiropractors are spine specialists, they can also treat injuries like headaches, shoulder injuries, ankle sprains and even carpal tunnel syndrome? We checked in with our resident Expert, Dr. Marc Belitsky, to learn about his practice and how chiropractic care can help patients treat a number of ailments and improve their quality of life. Dr. Belitsky is a Board-certified Chiropractic Rehabilitation doctor and has been the Clinical Director of Broomall Total Health Center (BTHC; www.SpineDr.org) for 35 years. (Located directly across from the Broomall Post Office.)

How did you choose a career in chiropractic care? I was always interested in pursuing a career in healthcare and back when I was a pre-med student, my intent was to work in a trauma or emergency room setting. I realized quickly that some of the doctors I encountered were not as fulfilled as I would have expected. I wanted a career that was more holistic and function oriented. I like to get to the cause of the problem. It was also important to me that I could build trusting, long-term relationships with patients, which led me to pursue a degree in chiropractic. After graduating in 1988 from the Pennsylvania College of Chiropractic, I opened my own practice right here in Broomall. For the past 35 years, I’ve been able to treat individuals from children to older adults to professional and amateur athletes. For me, it’s not just about pain management, it's about enhancing a person’s function, performance and quality of life.

I am also board-certified in Chiropractic Rehabilitation and board-certified in the diagnosis and treatment of scoliosis. I’ve completed advanced studies with a Master’s certification in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical injuries (whiplash) and associated Temporomandibular disorder (TMD, more commonly known as TMJ) dysfunction.

How would you describe your practice today? At BTHC, my team and I help patients through a holistic approach. In addition to chiropractic care, we offer physical therapy, rehabilitation, massage, decompression therapy as well as nutrition and weight loss support. Our team includes physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, a physiologist and massage therapists. Pam Schick, DAPT, our head physical therapist, has 35 years of experience specializing in outpatient Orthopedic Physical Therapy.

My staff are compassionate, honest people who truly care about each patient. When a new patient comes into the practice, our team always evaluates them to ensure issues are accurately and fully identified. We evaluate each area of a patient’s stress: chemical, physical and emotional. It’s important that we get to the root cause of the problem, and not just look at the symptoms. After a detailed physical exam, we recommend a plan that is specific to that patient and will help alleviate their aches and pains and restore their health.

Are there ailments you treat in your practice that may surprise readers? The main focus of chiropractic treatment is the relationship between the spine and the nervous system. With chiropractic treatments, pressure on the nerves of the spine is relieved, and patients often notice relief almost instantly. Now more than ever, with modern-day stresses and injuries due to our technological advances and working from home, we are seeing an increase in upper back and neck tension and tightness, as well as headaches, which are often caused by sitting at a computer or doing a lot of work while seated. Our office also treats patients for a variety of problems including herniated discs, carpal tunnel, rotator cuff injuries, knee bursitis, plantar fasciitis and whiplash. For patients suffering with TMD, we can help ease the pain and demonstrate exercises patients can do at home to help loosen up jaw muscles and reduce pain.

What do you think sets you apart from other chiropractors in our area? Overall, what sets us apart is our total commitment to a patient’s health. We don’t just treat the symptoms but we diagnose the underlying cause, which leads to better results.

Business Profile
Owner, Lou Matteo in the shop Dr. Marc Belitsky with Irish Dancer Sophie Reilly Dr. Marc Belitsky, Clinical Director of Broomall Total Health Center
Marple Friends & Neighbors / Bringing People Together 8

During my 35+ years as a chiropractor, I’ve also treated all types of professional and amateur athletes including golfers, runners, football, baseball and tennis players and local high school athletes, for various sports-related injuries. For the past decade, I have been part of the team that treats the U.S. Open golfers and caddies. Golfers often suffer from neck and shoulder injuries and caddies are prone to neck and lower-back injuries from carrying heavy golf bags. I have also been involved with professional tennis. Tennis players often need preventative treatment or treatment for a chronic injury.

What has been some of your most rewarding work? It is gratifying to see people of all ages seeking chiropractic as an alternative to medication and surgery for a variety of health issues. I get to know my patients really well, learning about their families and jobs. It’s fulfilling to be able to change their lives.

While working at the 2022 US Senior Open at Saucon Valley Country Club, I had the opportunity to treat a well known world class golfer. I received an emergency call that he was suffering severe lower back pain and couldn’t finish his round. After treating him, he returned to playing in the Open. He was so excited about finding pain relief that improved his performance, he even sent his wife to me for treatment.

Recently I treated a female patient with multiple disc herniation, whose previous surgeries and medications gave her no relief. Not only was she in a significant amount of pain, she could not lift her arm or work and had trouble sleeping. After only four weeks in our care at BTHC, she is now 75 percent pain free and very happy.

Last month I had the opportunity to evaluate Sophie Reilly, ranked third in the world for Irish Dance and flown in from

Ireland for treatment and coaching. She wanted help preparing for the World Irish Dancing Championships, taking place in Scotland in late March.

What do you enjoy about being a part of the community? My wife Janet and I lived in Broomall for 16 years and we now live just down the road in Radnor Township. We raised our two children here and I spent many years coaching them in travel soccer and baseball. I like giving back to the community through charity work like donating to local food banks, and I have served on the Board of Congregation Beth El – Ner Tamid in Broomall. I am also active on the board of Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association, advocating with state legislators in the commonwealth to improve access and quality of healthcare for patients.

I offer lectures on a variety of topics at workshops and for local organizations and serve as a guest lecturer at Cabrini University as well as a mentor for their public health and health sciences department. I’m an active member of the American Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board, the American Chiropractic Association Rehab Council, the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Association Sports Council and other professional and community organizations.

Conveniently located on West Chester Pike in Broomall, Broomall Total Health Center provides whole family healthcare from infancy to seniors and every stage in between. After more than three decades of treating patients holistically and comprehensively, Dr. Belitsky remains passionate about his work as a chiropractor. The Yiantsos Family : Connected to Their Roots

This month we are pleased to introduce you to the Yiantsos family: Kosmas, Dia and their children, Lina and Yianni. The Yiantsos’ call themselves a typical busy and fun filled Greek family. They’re welcoming and full of love.

First generation Greek-Americans, Kosmas and Dia credit their parents for the sacrifices they made so they could be where they are today. Dia’s parents, George and Mary Karamitopoulos, moved to the United States when they were a young couple. George grew up in Macedonia, Greece and before coming to the US, he owned an iron factory, where he created beautiful structures throughout Greece. “My dad could definitely write a book!” said Dia. Mary, who is from a small town named Anatoli located on Mount Kissavos in Thessaly, Greece, studied education and worked as an English teacher before they came to America.

George and Mary settled in Upper Darby in the 1970s with Dia’s older brother Greg and sister Kiki eventually moving to Broomall. Here in the US, George ran a commercial and residential construction company called G&M Efestos while Mary worked as a secretary and a teacher at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Upper Darby.

Dia was born several years after her siblings and is named after her grandmother, Arhodia. Her middle name, Katerina, is for St. Katerina, who Greeks celebrate on November 25th, Dia’s birthday. After attending Bywood Elementary School in Upper Darby, Dia went on to Paxon Hollow Middle School, and eventually graduated from Marple Newtown High School.

As a young girl, Dia was very active in the St. Demetrios church community. She performed with various dance

groups, including the church’s Pegusus dancers, and the Pan Macedonian Society’s young adult group. This is a group that is special to both Dia and Kosmas because they have been members since their teen years. The organization preserves and promotes the heritage and traditions of Greek Macedonia, very near and dear to them both.

After high school, Dia followed her passion and studied aesthetics at Jean Madeline, where she graduated at the top of her class. Her first job in the industry was with MAC cosmetics which led her to many exciting opportunities such as New York Fashion Week for Lady Gaga’s designer and Adolfo Sanchez, a designer of red carpet gowns as well as South Asian New York Fashion Week.

Today, Dia is the owner and makeup artist of Kalloni By Arhodia. Dia credits her mom for helping her come up with the name Kalloni, which means “beauty” in Greek. Sharing her passion for beauty with a variety of clients, she hosts them in her studio or travels to meet them on location.“Whether I’m doing makeup for a bridal party or for a celebrity on the set of a movie or TV show, I strive to create a warm and welcoming environment for my clients. I want them to feel comfortable knowing they’re in good hands.”

Over the years, Dia has also showcased her make up on runways in Philadelphia, worked as the “how-to” makeup host with Simon Cowell’s family and worked with a member of Real Housewives of Atlanta. You may have seen her work on Steven Singer’s online catalog, as well as CNN, as she recently began working for the

network. Voted one of the top Makeup Artists in Philadelphia, Dia has also been featured on the cover of Suburban Life magazine and is a partner with Philadelphia Style magazine where she was recognized as a Dynamic Woman in 2022. “Makeup is my passion,” she said. “I love what I do and the way my work influences others to truly bring out their inner Kalloni.”

Dia’s husband Kosmas was born in Philadelphia. In the 1970s, his dad immigrated from Macedonia, Greece to the United States where he graduated from Olney High School while working as a busboy. He then returned to Greece in 1980 to marry Kosmas’ mother, Ekaterini, and brought her to America with him to start a family and live the American dream. Upon his return, the family began a donut business, which has been around for 40 years with multiple locations in the tri-state region named “Jack's Donuts.” Although Kosmas was too young to work in the shop, he reaped the benefits of being a “taste tester and quality control inspector.” One of four children, his family eventually moved to Cheltenham, where he attended Cheltenham Elementary, and later Cheltenham High School. During high school, he worked in the family business and played soccer, football, participated in the bowling club and future business leaders of America.

Growing up, Kosmas was always interested in building electronics and robotics. “I would always take things apart and put them back together.” His interests led him to study engineering at Temple University where in his first year he was given the opportunity by the Dean of engineering to teach a class. “I

had already taken a robotics class before college,” explained Kosmas. “It was an interesting experience getting to see it from the perspective of a teacher.”

Kosmas earned a degree in electrical engineering with a minor in computer science and later received a masters degree from Villanova University in engineering power systems. Today he is an electrical engineer for the US Navy, where he works on board naval ships and tests large naval power and propulsion systems. “It’s a humbling feeling to be able to work alongside our sailors as they learn these advanced systems.” Not only does Kosmas love what he does, he is proud to support the Navy and protect our country.

Kosmas enjoys traveling, whether it be for work or personal. When home, Kosmas enjoys making wine and spending time with his family. He hopes to one day pass along these experiences and stories to his children and grandchildren.

Dia and Kosmas met in the early 2000s and started dating in the summer of 2005. When Kosmas was ready to ask Dia to marry him, he had a great idea to propose at Linvilla Orchards. “I wanted to take Dia there to cut down our first Christmas tree together and surprise her with the proposal,” recalled Kosmas. “The problem was it was mid November, which I thought was way too early for a tree,” Dia added jokingly. “I even called my mom to tell her I thought it was strange. I should have known she was in on it when she said, “Oh no, it’s a great time to get a tree!”

The couple married at Saint Demetrios, followed by a reception at The Merion, in Cinnaminson, NJ, with over 300 people. “It was a big, fat Greek wedding for sure!” Kosmas said. “The best part was many friends and family joined us throughout the week before the wedding and we incorporated many Greek customs and traditions.”

In their early married life, Kosmas and Dia lived in South Philadelphia where Kosmas already owned a home. They eventually moved to Broomall when their daughter Lina was a few months old, first living with Dia’s parents before building their own home here. “It was so wonderful to have the help and support of our families,” said Dia.

Introducing the Speer Swim School difference…

Lessons designed by a Mom and educator. Personalized lessons to push each student to their highest potential while giving them the love and care they need to gain confidence and be successful.

The Yiantsos family moved into their forever home in 2022 and love the people here, the walkability of their neighborhood and the Russell Elementary School community where Dia serves on the PTO. They are also active in the Pan Macedonian Association of Philadelphia, and in their Saint Demetrios community, where their children attend Sunday school and Greek school.

Kosmas and Dia’s daughter Lina Valentina is now in third grade at Russell. Dia said they see a lot of Kosmas’ grandmother in her. “She’s petite and super driven. I see her as a go-getter!” Lina loves to motivate others and is always there to help take care of someone when they’re not feeling well. “I call her little mommy,” she added. Right now Lina is into soccer, basketball and guitar and hopes to be an organizer one day.

Ioannis Georgios (Yianni), named after both grandfathers, is Lina's younger brother. A kindergartener at Russell, Yianni loves playing Roblox and building things. His parents say he’s a jokester who makes them laugh and keeps them on their toes. “We posted a funny video of him when the Eagles were in the Super Bowl in 2023, and it even caught the attention of one of the players before the game,” Kosmas said.

Life for the Yiantsos family is full of friends, family and celebrations of their faith and Greek culture. “Everything we have is because of the sacrifices our parents made,” said Dia. “We are forever grateful to them for giving us the blueprint on how

Think Storm Doors Before the Storms Come!

Storm doors have been on homes for years. Vast improvements in the door industry have resulted in multiple benefits to having a storm door. There are different options of storm doors that provide multiple styles depending on your needs or preferences. When choosing a storm door, it’s helpful to know what will benefit you the most, so you can make the best decision.

Curb Appeal: A new storm door provides a beautiful addition to the front of your home. The front door of a home is the heart of the house. It provides a welcoming feel to guests. It can increase the value of your home and be a beneficial feature to a potential buyer if you are trying to sell.

Security: Storm doors provide a level of comfort and protection, in addition to the main entry door. Some storm doors offer a security glass, strengthened screen and reinforced locks, to give you more peace of mind. A full glass storm door provides a better view for watching your children or animals while outside.

Ventilation and Air Flow: A storm door that has a changeable glass and screen, retractable, or venting option allows for better ventilation and air flow for your home. Opening your entry door and using the screen option on the storm door will allow beautiful spring or fall fresh air into your home. When the screen option is not being used, the glass option will allow natural light in.

Entry Door Protection: A storm door provides a level of protection to your entry door. It reduces maintenance costs by protecting the entry door from outdoor elements such as rain, wind and extreme heat or cold. But if sunlight rays will directly shine on your door for more than four hours a day, a storm door is not recommended because that can create a heat build-up in between the doors and damage the entry door’s finish.

Energy Efficiency: According to the U.S. Department of Energy, when a storm door is installed properly, it can reduce energy costs up to 50%. Storm doors help keep out extreme heat or cold, and they provide an additional barrier from the outside elements. Some storm doors include a Low-E (Low-Emissivity) glass, which provides additional protection from UV rays.

Keeps Bugs Out: Flying insects tend to wait for us to open our entry door so they can invite themselves in. A storm door assists with an extra barrier of protection from pesky bugs or insects that are trying to make their way into our home. Whether you’re looking for a full glass, venting or retractable storm door, you can be sure it will beautify and benefit your home! M

The 2024 Tax Season

The 2024 tax season is here. To expedite your refund, file early and electronically, opting for direct deposit. One of the best ways to file your returns is to setup an online taxpayer account with the IRS at www.IRS.gov/account to get data from previously filed returns, sign authorizations and make payments, or view account transcripts.

Independent Contractors

If you are working as an independent contractor, you will receive a form 1099 from each vendor that paid you at least $600 during the year. Your income as an independent contractor is subject to self-employment taxes. These taxes are the equivalent to the total Medicare and Social Security taxes that are paid equally in the employee and employer relationship.

As a self-employed person you pay both parts totaling a 15.3% tax. Additionally, self-employed persons need to be aware that no estimated tax payments are being withheld for them automatically. You should be making estimated tax payments on your own each quarter to avoid underpayment penalties and to lighten your tax bill upon filing. On the bright side, being the owner of an LLC or S-Corp allows you to deduct 20% of qualified business income if your business qualifies as specified service trade or business.

Digital Assets

Beginning in 2023, returns for partnerships, corporations and estates will inquire about digital asset transactions. Previously, this question was only asked on individual returns, but now will cover the aforementioned entities. If any sales or disposals of digital assets were made in 2023 they must be reported to the IRS. However, if you only held onto your digital assets or transferred them between accounts you own, you will not need to report any activity and can answer “No” on the returns. Additionally, if you were paid with digital assets for services, you must report those payments as income based upon their value at the time you received them. Any change in value between the time you received the assets and when you disposed of them would be a capital gain or loss.

ERTC Amnesty Program

Many taxpayers were plagued by scams from companies claiming to file an Employee Retention Credit application on the taxpayer’s behalf. The issue was that these taxpayers were not entitled to the ERTC credit, but were misled to believe they were. In this case, if a taxpayer comes clean to the IRS about their situation and which preparers or promoters they used to apply for the credit, they would only be required to repay 80% of the credit they improperly received. The amnesty program would also protect taxpayers from underpayment interest and civil penalties for fraudulent reporting. Taxpayers have until March 22 of this year to opt into this voluntary disclosure program. M

And Sweetly Breathes, “Forget Me Not!”

Over the weekend I drove up to Bucks County to pick up a donation to the Newtown Square Historical Society – an 1853 Quaker Friendship quilt. The quilt did not come with much of its history – other than what is displayed on the quilt itself. There are 81 blocks of white in 13 quilt rows and each block has the name and hometown of one or two people. All in all, 97 names are represented on the quilt. They are all the good Quaker surnames that we associate with Delaware and Chester counties.

The only provenance was that it was said to be the quilt of Phebe Ann Lewis. I found Phebe on ancestry.com, born in Newtown Square in 1825. So in the year that the quilt was made, Phebe was 28. Posted in Phebe’s tree was a photograph of a quilt with the same design – but dated 1845. I reached out to the poster, and he told me that his wife’s family, the Garrett family, has that quilt. Phebe’s daughter married into the Garrett family. Phebe was born a Lewis, and our donor is a Lewis. So that makes sense how these quilts were passed down in each family.

Sewing for the Quaker women of this time was a life skill and an occasion to gather with their community of friends. This particular type of quilt, a friendship or signature album quilt, was a fad from the 1840s into the 1850s. Phebe got caught up in the flow. Perhaps she was the organizer of the effort each winter to make a new quilt.

One block, the contribution of 19-yearold Margaret L. Williamson, has a poem, and the year. The poem is quite faded, but with a magnifying glass and help from Google, I found the poem in an 1841 publication for women:

There is a sigh to memory dear, For those we love when far away There is a gentle thrilling tear Illumes the heart with placid ray.

It steals across the tranquil mind, When musing on some favorite spot It tells of those we left behind And sweetly breathes, “Forget me not.”

The Historical Society will be displaying this quilt at its annual Historic Newtown Square Day on June 1st. Come out and inspect Phebe’s quilt and the workmanship of the local Quaker women of the 1850s! And let them know that we forget them not.

Asking the Tough Questions: What Are Your Final Wishes?

Having a conversation about end-of-life decisions is indeed a sensitive and important topic. It’s crucial for individuals to express their wishes and preferences, ensuring that their loved ones are aware and can fulfill those wishes when the time comes. Planning ahead can bring comfort and peace of mind to everyone involved.

If you’re speaking to a loved one about what type of funeral or service they would want, remind them the decision is entirely up to them. Tell them that without their input, their service or funeral may not be what they envision. Remember this is about what your loved one wants, not about how you would want things to be.

When discussing end-of-life plans, involving professionals such as attorneys and pre-planning consultants can be beneficial. They can assist in legal aspects and estate planning, as well as guide the logistics of arranging a funeral or service. It’s important to address not only the emotional aspects but also

the practical considerations to ensure that the plans can be smoothly executed.

To help structure this difficult discussion, creating a comprehensive list of preferences, from pallbearers to music choices and burial details, helps structure the conversation and ensures that all relevant aspects are considered. This proactive approach not only relieves the burden on family members during a time of grief but also minimizes the risk of disagreements among them.

Encouraging your loved one to share their thoughts and desires openly and honestly, while also acknowledging that the decision is entirely theirs, fosters a sense of control and ownership over their final arrangements. It’s a thoughtful and caring way to show love and respect for their wishes.

Here They Go Again!

MN Drama Presents Mamma Mia!

It’s time to dust off those bell bottoms and go-go boots and get ready to dance in the aisles! MN Drama’s Spring production of Mamma Mia! opens March 7th at Marple Newtown High School’s Performing Arts Center. The show takes audiences on an adventure to Greece with non-stop laughs and show-stopping dance numbers. Told through Swedish pop group ABBA’s timeless songs, Mamma Mia! is a story about love, laughter and friendship.

Defined as a jukebox musical, Mamma Mia! became a sensation on Broadway in 1999. For fans of ABBA, you can expect to hear more than 20 of their songs in MN Drama’s production of the musical including "I Have a Dream," "Waterloo," "VoulezVous," and "The Winner Takes It All" woven into the story.

Under the direction of Brian Walden and executive producer Tiffany Caprice, Mamma Mia! is MN Drama’s third production of the school year. This fall they wowed audiences with Puffs as well as a dinner theater-style production of Poof, a murder mystery brunch and fundraiser. Aside from the plays, students in the program have numerous opportunities to enhance their theater experience and hone their skills. “We really want to give students in the program hands-on learning opportunities,” said Tiffany. “It’s important to build community with some of the theater programs in our area.” They have workshops planned with West Chester University’s theater program and the People’s Light Theater and have had the opportunity to meet with dialect coaches and writers, and learn about stage management. “These opportunities not only improve their skills for our productions, but they can help students who may be interested in a career in theater,” she added.

The students themselves voted on the Spring musical this year. “We gave them the choice of High School Musical or Mamma Mia! and it was unanimous for Mamma Mia!,” explained Brian. “What’s fun about this show is that it's all about the music. It allows the performers to showcase a variety of talents like singing and dancing.” Students also have the ability to show off their leadership skills. For the third year in a row Kaylie Pohlig is serving as the show’s student producer along with assistant student producers Sheena Mol and Lucas Cavanaugh. Roham Shirazi earned the role of student director. After performing in MN Drama’s productions since he was in sixth grade, Roham said he was looking to challenge himself even more. “I’ve always enjoyed acting in the shows and this year, I wanted to explore the idea of how I could get even more involved in the program.” When Roham wasn’t performing his role as Sky, he had the opportunity to block scenes and dance numbers.

Mamma Mia! takes place on a Greek Island as the character Sophie, played by Junior Annastasia Cavanaugh, is dreaming

of the perfect wedding to Sky. Sophie’s dream includes her father giving her away, but there’s one problem. She doesn’t know who her father is. Sophie’s mom Donna hasn’t told Sophie about her past, so Sophie sneaks a peek into her mother’s old diaries. That is when she discovers three possible fathers: Sam, Bill and Harry and she’ll go on a quest to find out which one it is!

Annastasia, who has been performing in MN Drama productions since her Freshman year said that the role of Sophie is a dream role. Even before earning the role, Annastasia worked for several months with a voice coach and is excited to perform the beloved ABBA songs. “I’ve always loved the Broadway and movie versions of Mamma Mia! and the role of Sophie really spoke to me,” she said. “I like the message of the show, which is about finding your independence.”

Senior Margaret Schiller plays Donna, Sophie’s independent single mom, who happens to be the former lead singer of a 1970s pop group “Donna and the Dynamos.” Margaret has always been a fan of the movie version of Mamma Mia!, especially Meryl Streep’s performance. “It’s been fun playing more of a ‘real person’ this year,” said Margaret, who played Morticia Addams in last year’s The Addams Family. “I am enjoying having to dig deeper and playing someone who has really lived a full life.”

The cast also includes Evangelia Papadopoulos and Kayley Brown as Donna’s best friends and Donovan Carmichael (Bill), Chris Fazio (Harry) and Teddy Pilko (Sam). Audiences may remember Teddy as “Lurch” from The Addams Family. “Sam has definitely been more of a challenge to act,” said Teddy. “He's so normal compared to Lurch!”

Behind the scenes, Mamma Mia’s Stage Crew, under the direction of Junior Emily Grimm, keeps the scenes moving smoothly. From building the sets and managing props and costumes, their work with colors, lighting and design helps bring the vision of Greece to life.

With its talented cast and crew, featured dancers and musicians, Mamma Mia! takes the audience on an adventure that leads to a wedding, a dance party and a discovery that sometimes the best family isn’t made from just genes, but love. Opening night is Thursday, March 7th with performances through Saturday, March 9th. To purchase tickets and to learn more about the program, visit MNDrama.org. M

THESE WOMEN Make History by BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER

March is Women’s History Month. We’ll be learning about the contributions of women to events in history. But this annually declared tribute is intended to also shine a spotlight on women who make contributions to our contemporary society.

I know a dozen women who have recently contributed to our contemporary society for residents of Marple Township. They are the women of our magazine staff and the woman business owners of our community who are among our advertising Sponsors, who together are Bringing People Together by making it possible for Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine to be mailed to thousands of homes for free each month, and available online at MarpleMag.com.

You may recognize the ladies of our magazine staff by name, but I’m bringing them out in front for a bow this month. And you certainly know the names of the women who are our advertising Sponsors, but there’s something about them you may not know.

The business leaders of our community who choose to use a portion of their limited marketing budget for something that is more than business advertising – it’s sponsorship of our Marple community that should be recognized, and rewarded, because their making our hometown magazine possible shows us how grateful they are to the Marple community for the success of their business.

All of these women, in their unique way, contribute to the ability for us to create a new issue of your hometown magazine

and mail it you for free each month, which I like to think is a regular contribution to “our contemporary society” by Bringing People Together through our hometown magazine’s unique brand of social-media-in-print.

We have these ladies of our Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine staff to thank:

And we have these businesswomen of our local community to also thank as Sponsors who make Marple Friends & Neighbors. Their support is a monthly commitment to the residents of Marple Township which they know are important to the success of their business.

Play Ball!

Marple Township Little League Challenger Division Returns to the Field

After a successful first season in 2023, the Marple Township Little League’s (MTLL) Challenger League is ready to kick off its second season so that children of all playing abilities can enjoy the game of baseball. Modeled after other Challenger leagues in the area, MTLL’s Challenger division welcomes players of all physical and intellectual challenges. In its inaugural year, over 30 players participated in playing baseball (the first time ever for many)! All made possible with the help of over 100 volunteers!

Run by dedicated volunteers and chartered members of Little League Baseball, MTLL has been serving boys and girls of the Marple Newtown area since 1951. Under the guidance of longtime MTLL board member and Broomall resident Mike Noonan, last year MTLL established a Challenger division, an adaptive baseball program.

MTLL's Challenger Division provides a healthy environment to play ball and build self-confidence and self-esteem. “We’re thrilled with how successful the first season of the division was,” said Mike. “It's thanks to the help of a committee of board members and dedicated coaches and volunteers.”

The MTLL Challenger division committee includes three special education teachers: Alyssa and Jimmy Galligan and Jackie Sharkey. Their experience in special education helps bring out the best in the players. “These teachers not only had great strategies to teach skills to the players and keep them engaged, but their insight was helpful for the volunteers too,” said board member Joe Crimmins. The committee also includes Brian McCollum (MTLL Liaison) and Corey Ruff (Technology Director /Buddy Coordinator).

Games are every Sunday at 12pm and are three innings long, with each team batting through their lineup each time. Spectators are welcome and encouraged! Like any Little League program, the Challenger Division relies heavily on volunteers and participation from community members. Out in the field, players are paired up with buddies — players from the Majors division who help the participants and join them in enjoying a day at the ballfield. “Our volunteer buddies love getting to know these kids,” said Joe. “Watching them as they work together as a team is so rewarding.”

The first season was met with praise from the players and their families. The Basciano family said that the MTLL Challenger league brought them so much joy. “We never thought we would see the day our boy would play baseball,” said Mrs. Basciano. “He had so much fun and was excited to go every week. We are so grateful for this fun and inclusive opportunity that MTLL has provided in our amazing community!”

Local resident Jen Warner had two sons play in the league. “Before this league, I wasn’t sure my boys would ever be able to participate in a team sport,” Jen explained. “Thanks to the Challenger league, we’ve had the absolute privilege of watching our kids try something new in a setting they feel safe and supported in and that’s been invaluable.” Jen said that the Challenger league is one of the rare places where the expectation isn’t that her boys adapt to the world around them. “The passionate community members running the league, each with unique experience with neurodiversity, work creatively and selflessly to bring the world of baseball to my boys.”

Thanks to the generosity of the community and fundraising for MTLL, Challenger players can join the league free of charge. Last June, MTLL’s Challenger team participated in Challenger Day, a day for all of the local Challenger leagues to come together. It was a fun-filled day of baseball games, food and even a visit from the Philly Phanatic!

Coach Alyssa Galligan is a special education teacher at Hillcrest Elementary in Upper Darby and enjoyed the first season of Challenger baseball. “It has been a pleasure to be a part of MTLL’s Challenger League,” she said, proudly. “Witnessing a partnership between the athletes, buddies, coaches and families has been inspiring. Everyone is working toward a common goal of creating an inclusive environment where all athletes are accepted and praised. I look forward to another great season!”

Registration for the Challenger division will be open until April 10, 2024. For more information about MTLL’s Challenger League visit MTLL.org. Email or call challenger.mtll@gmail. com, 484-888-8780 or go to their Facebook page. M
