ON THE COVER

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

When I try to remember September, in years past, I still recall my own sluggish acceptance of heading off to another new school year. Now as a parent, with my two youngest of four sons heading off to college, this will surely be a September to Remember for my wife Jean and me. We’ll begin a new kind of September, now as empty nesters during the school year.

Remembering those Septembers, when our boys were entering a new school grade, at times managing through multiple schools with older boys in high school, I cannot forget that quick snap-back that started up school, Scouts, fall sports and community activities all around Labor Day. September is an exciting ride of new beginnings including Fall.

Four years ago, the Broomall community was experiencing a big new beginning. Our first issue of Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine arrived in August, announcing our mission to be Bringing People Together by connecting residents with feel-good features all about Marple Township residents, organizations, local businesses and local events. By September everyone was talking about the new hometown magazine, the one with a Marple family on the cover, and wondering who would be on the September issue cover.

Four years later, our hometown magazine may have 100% readership in the homes Marple Friends & Neighbors is mailed to monthly, while also being available to read or download online at www.MarpleMag.com, just as our sister publication, Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors (www.NewtownSquareMag.com), is so widely read monthly by homeowners in neighboring Newtown Township.

This year, staying in pace with September’s new beginnings, our publishing team is not only hard at work developing the October issues of our magazines, we are also about to widen our Bringing People Together outreach through our unique brand of socialmedia-in-print, to widen our friends and neighbors readership to homeowners in the newer home developments of Newtown Square, and all homeowners in Edgemont Township. Next month the inaugural October 2022 issue of our third local magazine, Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors, launches. (More to come next month on that new beginning.)

The Party just keeps getting bigger Bringing People Together. And you know who we have to thank - our advertising Sponsors who make it all possible for you to receive this September issue of Marple Friends & Neighbors I know you’ll enjoy.

Dear Residents, Sometimes the month of September can be a bit of a back-toschool bummer, especially after a fun summer. Luckily there is a lot to look forward to this month including cooler temps, football season and plenty of fun local events. Check out our calendar on page 2 for family friendly things to do this month.

Our September issue highlights many interesting people in our community. First, you’ll meet illustrator David Hoffrichter, a passionate and talented artist. You’ll also meet our Fire Police Captain, Al Bianchi, as well as some local centenarians. Our Business Profile highlights Fante Flooring. When it comes to turning your house into a dream home, they’ve got you covered. You'll also hear how Marple Newtown High School is building future leaders through its STEM Academy.

We are always looking for more Marple families, individuals and organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at HStupak @BestVersionMedia.com.

Update Your Home with New Interior Doors

You’ve updated your home’s interior – you laid new floors, updated your kitchen or bathrooms, brightened the walls with new paint… Now what? How about replacing some of your interior doors? Take for instance that old bathroom door that’s been painted over 15 times, or the bedroom door that sticks and swells with the slightest bit of humidity. How about that 1960’s design door that is just not meshing with all your new updates?

There are tons of different options out there for interior doors. You can stick with a traditional style door or spice it up with something stylish and new. You might try some frosted glass inserts, or try a modern design that includes abstract lines. Do a

search online or take a look at your local hardware store for

Slab Doors

Slab door replacements involve changing just the slab portion of the door, not the frame. This tends to be somewhat easier than tearing out the whole frame, but can still be a bit complicated, especially in older homes. The opening most likely isn’t perfectly square, and the slab will require cutting or sanding to accommodate the opening. Remember that wood expands and contracts, so leave enough space to accommodate for swelling and sticking.

Pre-Hung Doors

Pre-hung door replacement is replacing the slab and the frame, which are typically sold as one unit. This is usually more work but gives the whole opening a fresh look, not just the door portion. When pre-hung doors are installed, new trim is normally needed as well.

Other Interior Doors

Don’t forget about your closet or pantry doors. Maybe you’re tired of that sliding mirror door in the guest room, or that bifold door that’s always falling off the track and never opens smoothly. Updating to new sliding closet doors or a cooler design bifold door with a new track will give the room a more modern feel and ease frustration. Once

Ratifying the U.S. Constitution

Each September we recognize Constitution Day, September 17th, to celebrate the U.S. Constitution. Over four months in 1787, 12 of the 13 states elected 74 delegates, of which 55 attended the convention, and 39 signed the final document on September 17, 1787. But there was still a long way to go until it became effective, with no assurance that would happen. George Washington, remarked upon signing it, “Should the States reject this excellent Constitution, the probability is, an opportunity will never again offer to cancel another in peace—the next will be drawn in blood.”

The first state to ratify the Constitution was our neighbor, the “First State”

Marple Historical Society

The document was submitted to the U.S. Congress of the Confederation, which on September 28th recommended submitting it to the states for approval. If nine states voted to ratify the document, then it would become effective. Neighboring Delaware was the first to do so, voting unanimously to approve it on December 7th, giving them permanent bragging rights as the “First State.”

Pennsylvania’s 69 delegates went into session in November at the Pennsylvania State House, the same location where the Constitution was created and debated by the national delegates. There was far more opposition to the document as written. The Anti-Federalists feared a powerful centralized government, and the lack of a Bill of Rights. Three of the Pennsylvania delegates also sat at the Constitutional Convention, and one of them, James Wilson, gave the most forceful arguments in its favor. On December 12, 1787, Pennsylvania voted 46-23 to approve the document. Marple was then part of Chester County, and its delegate, General Anthony Wayne, voted in favor. Voting nay: Abraham Lincoln of Berks County, the great-great uncle of our 16th president.

How should we celebrate the day? Like our delegates did! They, the state government officers, the faculty of the university and the militia marched to the courthouse and read the ratification document to the assembled citizens; the uniformed militia fired off a “federal salute” and the bells of Christ Church were rung. At three o’clock they repaired to Mr. Epple’s Tavern. At least 13 toasts were made, including “May the flame kindled on the Altar of Liberty in America, lead the nations of the world to a knowledge of their rights and to the means of recovering

them.” The remainder of the day “was spent in mutual congratulations upon the happy prospect of enjoying, once more, order, justice and good government in the United States.”

Turning Houses into Dream Homes

Choosing a floor can seem like an overwhelming task when faced with all the materials and designs you have to choose from. Luckily, Fante Flooring in Newtown Square has you covered. Not only do they have a wide selection of flooring you won’t find anywhere else, owner Eric Fante takes immense pride in seeing the finished products in his customers’ homes.

Eric opened Fante Flooring’s Newtown Square location in 2016, but the company’s roots started long before that in South Philadelphia. Eric’s great-grandfather, Thomas Fante, came to the United States from Italy in 1901, where he opened up and ran a successful furniture business. His son Dominic, Eric's grandfather, worked alongside his father and was particularly interested and knowledgeable in the area of flooring. They opened Fante Flooring in 1946. The business grew and by the 1970s Dominic had turned the store into a beautiful showroom.

Eric grew up in South Philadelphia in the 1970s and spent a lot of his childhood helping his dad, Ron, and grandfather in the family business. Eric remembers being a young boy and learning the many aspects of running a flooring business from both his father and grandfather. “I started as a young kid putting tools away and sweeping the floors,” explained Eric. “Then

as a teenager and young adult I took on more responsibilities and learned how to take measurements and install floors. They showed me how important it is to be a helper.”

Eventually Eric took over running the business and since 2001 he has been the owner and operator of Fante Flooring. Ron passed away in 2011, but Eric said his legacy is in great hands. His family’s traditions and techniques are what helped him run the store successfully. “My dad taught me everything in both business and life,” said Ron. “From him I learned the business from the ground up and how important it is to pay attention to all the little details. They are the most important aspects of being a business owner.”

Over the years as the business grew, Eric was serving more customers outside of the city. Traveling frequently to the Philadelphia suburbs and the Mainline prompted Eric to move the location to Newtown Square in 2016. Located where Route 3 and 252 intersect, the 4000 square foot showroom has a large selection of designer floors that aren’t always found in large retail stores.

From decorator fine hardwoods, the latest carpeting or tile woods and a vast array of modern engineered solutions, Fante Flooring offers a variety of flooring types that can turn houses into dream homes. Eric said he created the showroom so that customers can see the best and widest variety of flooring types all in one place.

Shortly after Eric moved his business to Newtown Square, he and his wife Vera decided to find their forever home here in Marple Newtown. They’d been living in Ridley Park for more than a decade but always admired the family friendly neighborhoods in our area. In 2018 they found the perfect home in Broomall on a street with more than 30 kids. Vera is a fifth

grade teacher at St. Anastasia School, where all three of their children attended school. Eric’s oldest son is headed to Marple Newtown High School next year for his Freshman year. “It’s so great to be part of this community both in business and in life,” Eric said fondly.

“Many customers become friends, so I’m elated seeing them happy with the finished product.” Eric also employs sub-contractors that have worked for him for 15 years. “I thank them every day because they help keep my business alive,” he said, proudly.

If you are ready to upgrade one or more rooms throughout your home, Fante Flooring has you covered. Call them today at 610-232-7080 or visit the showroom at 39 South Newtown Street Road (PA Rt 252) in Newtown Square. M

Eric spends his days in the showroom talking with his customers and walking them through the process of selecting, designing and installing high quality beautiful floors. For customers who can’t come into the showroom, Fante offers a showroom on wheels. Eric can bring the floor samples directly to customers' homes so they’re able to have a look at flooring under their own lighting to decide what works.

What sets Fante Flooring apart from the big box stores is Eric’s personal approach and attention to detail that he takes very seriously. “ I sleep better knowing a job went smoothly,” said Eric.

Illustrator David Hoffrichter: Finding Purpose Through Art

This month we are pleased to introduce you to Marple resident David Hoffrichter, a passionate and talented artist whose perseverance and dedication to his craft have led him to become a successful fantasy illustrator.

David grew up in Broomall with his parents and brother and, as a young child, was already showing signs of artistic ability. He attended The Walden School in Swarthmore from kindergarten to eighth grade and played baseball for many years in the Marple Township Little League. David was a frequent winner of The Walden School's annual art contests. “I won so many times that finally, they decided to make me a judge to be fair to the other kids,” David said, laughing.

David’s parents supported his love of art, and he credits his mom with getting him interested in the fantasy genre after she introduced him to The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings. His mom also drove him up and down the east coast to visit all the museums they could. “My mom was always pushing me to stretch my imagination,” said David.

As a young boy, David’s art was more than just a hobby; it was therapeutic. In elementary school, he began experiencing tics and unwanted movements, and by the time he was a teenager, he was officially diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome. Tourette Syndrome, a neurological disorder characterized by sudden, repetitive, rapid and unwanted movements or vocal sounds called tics, left David feeling embarrassed and shy. But he quickly learned that he could find his voice through his artwork. “What was first considered a disability, I later realized was something that set me apart, and I could channel my energy into art,” David explained.

At age nine, David began taking lessons with local artist James Browne who not only taught him watercolor but the history of art. James is a talented illustrator who graduated from University of the Arts and just happened to be a neighbor of the Hoffrichters. If you frequent Jaquette’s Bakery in Broomall, you’ll find one of James’ paintings hanging on the wall of the bakery. Although James eventually moved out of the Broomall area, David said he is a close friend who he considers to be

more like a brother. They even created a mural together at the Blue Church in Springfield. “James was truly a mentor to me and taught me so much,” said David. “He’s the reason I’m the artist I am today.”

After David finished eighth grade, his parents decided what would be best at the time for him was to be homeschooled. David did well with his homeschool curriculum, but eventually, he wanted to return to school and finish his education in person. David entered Marple Newtown High School for

his senior year. Because he had really ground out a lot of his coursework during home school, by the time he was a senior, he was able to fill his school day with numerous art electives. “I probably spent six or seven periods in the art room,” David recalled fondly. David also played Varsity tennis and joined the high school track team. “What I loved about MNHS was that the teachers were wonderful,” he said. Two teachers, in particular, supported David and helped him grow as an artist. “I have to give a shout-out to Mr. Winterbottom and Mrs.

Can,” David explained. “They were both so inspirational to me.” Mr. Winterbottom said that David’s maturity and kindness made him a pleasure to have in class. He also had a great mind and let his creativity run wild. “David was so meticulous and detailed in his artwork,” Mr. Winterbottom explained. “You definitely did not see that in the average student.”

Although David had initially planned to go to art school after high school, he decided what would be best to prevent burnout was to earn an Associate’s Degree in education from Delaware County Community College. He then went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from University of SUNY Excelsior, an online program. He contemplated being a teacher but ultimately continued to spend the next several years investing in his art education.

In 2016 he completed training at Neilson Carlin’s Academy of Fine Arts in Kennett Square, where he learned the fundamentals of painting with oils. Neilson Carlin is an artist who specializes in commissioned sacred and devotional art and has been teaching and drawing at his school for 25 years. David took the skills and knowledge from Neilson and channeled them into his true passion, fantasy illustration.

David began his own career by selling his pieces through word of mouth and through his Etsy and Ebay stores. He also has a large Facebook and Instagram following where he posts his artwork. In the past several years, he's been traveling to different art shows to sell his work, including the Linvilla Orchards annual Arts & Craft Festival.

What David has found the most helpful in developing and ultimately selling his art pieces are strong personal connections. By attending workshops across the country, including IlluXCon, a symposium dedicated solely to the art of the fantastic (imaginative realism), he was able to meet and network with other artists. “Not only do these workshops allow me to connect with artists, it rejuvenates my love of art,” he explained.

At the 2019 Fantasy Art Workshop Illustration Intensive (FAWII) in Milwaukee, David found another mentor in Howard Lyon, whose work can be found in products from Magic: the Gathering and Star Wars as well as Dungeons and Dragons

books and World of Warcraft cards. FAWII is a yearly gathering of illustrators who want to learn and be inspired together while being taught by world class artists. “Howard has been helping me for the past few years to reach new heights in my journey,” said David. “I also met many art peers who continue to inspire me regularly and who I get to call friends.”

Over the years, David has received numerous accolades and awards for his artwork, and his fantasy illustrations have been featured on a number of game art and book covers. Although his passion is fantasy illustration, he’s often commissioned for more traditional works. Recently he was asked to paint a couple as their wedding gift to each other. “I assumed it’d be a traditional wedding portrait,” explained David. “To my surprise, they wanted to be painted as wizards. I was thrilled!”

David typically spends 10-13 hours a day in his art studio that is attached to his childhood home. “It doubles as a man cave,” he said jokingly. “I created it to feel inspirational and the artwork I surround myself with is soothing. It actually lowers my blood pressure.” Over the years, David has learned to manage his Tourette Syndrome. “Sometimes a tic or sudden movement will mess up hours of work. But that’s just the cost of doing business,” he added, laughing.

Looking ahead to the next five or 10 years, David said he’d love to have a book published that he’s both written and illustrated. “It’s my dream to walk into Barnes and Noble and see one of my own books there,” he said. David would also love to give back by teaching art to others. “Sometimes I feel like I’m just at the beginning of my journey,” he said. “Whether or not I choose to supplement my career, I will always be an artist.” David also wants our readers to know whether you are a student or retired, it's never too late to start doing something creative. Thank you, David, for sharing your story and for inspiring your Marple Friends & Neighbors to be creative! Most people have heard of high profile cyberattacks or the hacking of companies and individuals in the news. Unfortunately it can and does happen to just about anyone.

It is vital to be able to recognize the common signs to look for in these types of situations, particularly where IRS notifications are concerned. IRS publications and updates list several telltale signs of identity theft to watch out for.

The IRS warns that if you experience any of the following situations, you may be a victim of identity theft:

• You receive a text, call or email notice about a return you didn’t file

• An online account was created in your name that you’re unaware of

• You receive tax transcripts you did not request

• The IRS sends records indicating earned wages from an employer you don’t know

The IRS wants to make clear that it primarily communicates with taxpayers through letters and mailed notices. RARELY does the IRS call a taxpayer directly, and they NEVER communicate through text messages.

Taxpayers who have fallen victim to a scam or otherwise had their identity stolen can file an Identity Theft Affidavit with the IRS or speak with the Fraud Resolution Department, who can assist in identity recovery, by calling 800-908-4490. Prompt communication with the IRS is pivotal in identity theft cases.

According to a study by Verizon, more than a third of all data breaches in 2021 involved ‘Social Engineering’ which involves digital con-artists. They seek to obtain sensitive information from people through impersonating someone official, hoping to convince an individual to reveal personal data. If successful, the hacker can access bank and investment accounts to drain funds. They could use your identification details to open credit cards and write phony checks, which could ultimately be billed to you. These traps are referred to as ‘phishing’ scams.

Some common indicators of phishing scams are as follows:

• Unexpected and untimely email, phone call or text message

• May include a fake invoice from a company you currently are or have done business with

• Attention-grabbing emails claiming that you’ve won a prize or are being charged with a crime

• Requests to provide private information

It’s important to visually check the sender’s email address to be sure it's correct and free from spelling errors. Hackers craft email addresses that look very similar to a familiar address. Consider calling or texting the sender to verify if the communication is legitimate. Delete suspicious emails immediately and never reveal personal information to unknown parties. If you are unsure if an email or text message is legitimate, treat it as a fake. The damage identity theft and data breaches can do to individuals and companies can be catastrophic and result in bankruptcy or costly lawsuits. M

SEPTEMBER STUDENT OF THE MONTH

The September Casey’s Public House Student of the Month is Grace Yacobe, who received a Certificate of Achievement and a $25 gift card from Casey’s Public House, our Sponsor of this program. Grace is a 10th grade honor student from the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur (ND), who also works as a student ambassador, helping the admissions team with tours, shadow days and Open Houses. She is also the President of the Play It Forward Club and a STEM Scholar.

After winning 1st place in the tri-state biology competition, Grace was one of 13 students who presented their research at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences state meet at Penn State, where she achieved a perfect score and was awarded a Director's Award for Biology. Then Grace entered the Delaware Valley Science Fair, which included over 700 projects by middle and high school students representing 10 regions from across the state, and was awarded a bronze medal as the 3rd place overall winner for 9th grade students. This earned her an all-expense-paid trip to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in

Atlanta, GA, with students from over 80 countries. Her research project examined the creation of a non-invasive method to efficiently detect lung conditions, one of the world’s leading causes of death.

Along with her high achievements academically, Grace also enjoys playing on ND’s field hockey and swimming teams, and playing the piano and violin in their concert orchestra. Grace enjoys helping in the kitchen and with fundraising efforts at her church. In fact, she helped to raise over $18,000 for COVID relief during the pandemic. When she has free time, Grace enjoys drawing, reading and baking, as well as writing – in particular poetry which has been featured in the school’s magazine. She’d like to go into the field of neuroscience when she’s older, and lives by her mother’s motto, “Don’t stop and never give up!”

Grace, your Marple Newtown Friends & Neighbors congratulate you on receiving this award, and on your numerous accomplishments. Thanks for sharing your time and talents with so many! M

Fire Police Captain Al Bianchi: Serving Our Community with Pride

Our Marple friends & neighbors know that Broomall is a special place to live. Our hometown pride not only comes from knowing we have fantastic schools and wonderful locally owned shops and restaurants, but we also know it’s the people who are the glue that holds our community together. Resident Al Bianchi is one of those people giving back to our community.

For the past several years, Al has been serving and protecting our community as the Fire Police Captain. The Fire Police work closely with the Marple Township Police Department (MTPD) and Broomall Fire Company (BFC) when special calls come in and also during parades, functions, fairs and other special events. Their primary responsibility is to ensure a safe and unobstructed area for firefighters, rescue personnel and emergency vehicles and to provide spectator and crowd

control. The unit was developed as a specialized group that helps coordinate automobile and pedestrian traffic in and around an active fire or law enforcement emergency scene.

As Captain, Al’s responsibilities are to coordinate Fire Police activities at any incident. “The challenge is to ensure the safety for all the first responders and the public,” explained Al. “With limited volunteers who serve as Fire Police, this can often be challenging.” Al joined the Fire Police in 2013 as a way to give back to the community and help support the Fire Company. “It’s been a great way to stay active by helping and meeting people and serving the Marple Township community,” he said. “I especially love the camaraderie I have with the other officers.”

Prior to his role as the Fire Police Captain, Al had a long and successful career with Sunoco as a manager in the aviation department. “Not only did I love the job, but it also gave me the opportunity to travel across the country, sometimes even on a private jet,” he recalled fondly. Al wanted to keep busy after retirement, and in addition to his role with the Fire Police, he found a second career working in

property management for Drexelbrook Apartments in Drexel Hill. Despite only wanting a part-time job, Al said he couldn’t say no when the owner offered him the job as head of the maintenance department, a role he had enjoyed for many years.

When Al is not serving the community through the Fire Police, he can be found working on or driving one of his classic cars. A lifetime member of the Historical Car Club of Pennsylvania, Al keeps a 1967 and a 2019 Corvette in the garage attached to his house. Al said he’d loved cars ever since he learned how to drive.

“I’m definitely a Corvette guy!”

Al Bianchi with Fire Police Lieutenant Tony Cavarocchi

What Al is most proud of is the beautiful family he created with his wife of 48 years, Adele. Al met Adele when he was 19 years old outside the Springfield Mall. Al laughed when he told the story of how he and his buddy almost ran into Adele’s car in the parking lot. “She didn’t seem very happy with us,” Al explained. “But we invited ourselves to tag along with Adele and her friend for lunch.” That day Al told Adele he would marry her, and a year later, his prediction came true when the two exchanged vows. Al and Adele lived in Havertown for 28 years, where they raised their children Al, Jr. and Andria. While Al worked at Sunoco, Adele owned and ran a successful hair salon called Shear Elegance in Middletown.

Once their children had finished college and left the nest, Al and Adele decided to move to an area they had been fond of, Broomall. Since 2009, there were so many unusual coincidences that made us find this home when we were looking for homes in Broomall we couldn’t pass it up,” explained Al. “We found our dream home on Marshall Drive and learned that it had a lot of ties with a friend of mine, Robert Marshall, who had passed away as we found the home. The day we looked at the house, there was also an owl outside in the bird bath.” Al and Adele took it as a sign and moved into the home in 2009.

Sadly, Adele passed away in July 2021 after a six-year battle with cancer. For six years, Al cared lovingly for Adele and said he’s grateful for his children, who supported him and helped care for their mom during her illness. Al is adjusting to life without his beloved Adele but is thankful to have his daughter with him and his son and his family nearby. Al, Jr. works as an Operations

Supervisor for Energy Transfer and still lives in Havertown with his wife Andrea and their two sons, Nathaniel and Gabriel. Al’s daughter Andria works at Upper Darby High School, where she has been an English teacher for 18 years. Also keeping Al company is his loyal Yorkie, Maya. Thank you, Al, for sharing

story and for your commitment to the Marple community. M

The Benefits of Solar Panels and Shingles

Now more than ever, home and business owners are looking to solar power as a way to reduce their electric bills, protect themselves from increasing utility rates and protect the environment by producing clean energy. However, most people know little to nothing about the process or the actual savings that comes with solar panel installation.

While most people are familiar with traditional solar roof panels, these days solar shingles are another option for home and business owners. Solar shingles work in a similar way to solar panels—they both absorb the sun’s rays, converting the light to thermal or electrical energy. However, solar shingles (also referred to as solar roof tiles) are made of slim photovoltaic (PV) sheets that can either overlay or replace the existing roof shingles. The number of tiles for a typical roof installation can lower utility bills by 40% to 70%. Of course, by adding more tiles, the energy output increases.

The first step would be to perform an analysis of the home and property, via satellite imagery and specialized software, to determine the best areas on the roof or ground to install a solar array. Then your installer will examine the existing electrical panel to determine how to run the wiring between the PV panels/shingles and the power inverter. After that, the specialist will work with a structural engineer, your insurance company and your municipality to secure the needed permits and begin sourcing the required materials.

After installation, when your PV system produces electricity, it is either used to power your property or it goes into the grid. That is where you can sell the excess Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs), which are generated by your new solar home, to power co-ops. Solar panels also increase the resale value of your home, plus you can take advantage of government rebates and tax credits.

Solar panels and shingles have long life spans, typically 20 years or more, but it does vary depending on the manufacturer and installation. Warranties also vary, so be sure to research all of these aspects of various solar panels/shingles you’re considering.

Harnessing the power of solar energy is not only good for the environment, it’s good for your wallet too. The best part is that spending less on electricity gives you more money to spend on the things you really enjoy. M

Celebrating Our Centenarians

Albert Einstein once said, “Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” That’s the thing about wisdom, it cannot be taught. We gain it over time, through our own life experiences and sage advice from those who know a thing or two about living a long, meaningful life.

Join us this month as we celebrate National Centenarian’s Day on September 22nd. It is a day set aside each year to celebrate and honor those who have reached the age of 100. The day was originally proclaimed as a time to partake in the rich history and wisdom shared by centenarians.

Over the years, as the human population and life expectancy have increased, so have the number of people who live to 100 years of age. According to the United Nations, there are over 570,000 centenarians in the world currently, with the United States being home to 97,000 of them.

When you stop to think about it, our current centenarians have lived and experienced more life-changing events than our future generations can ever imagine. These precious members of society have lived through the Great Depression, World Wars and Civil Wars. They’ve witnessed the invention of television, the golden age of radio, the innovation of air travel, all the way to the exploration of space and the digital revolution — they have lived and seen it all in one lifetime!

Listening to centenarians’ stories is always inspiring, and this is one day to be cherished by everyone to honor those among us who have seen a century go by.

One of our local centenarian’s is Ralph Perkner. Ralph moved to Broomall in the 1980s and he and his wife raised their five children here.

Ralph turned 101 this past February and still lives here in Broomall. A lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, Ralph proudly served in World War II. After serving in the war, he worked as an optometrist until he finally retired at age 90.

These days, Ralph likes to spend time with his family. Prior to the pandemic he was swimming three times a week. When asked how he got to 101, he said, “You just deal with things as they come.” He also said he didn’t drink or smoke, which contributed to his long life.

One of our most cherished Newtown Square residents, Mr. Eugene Vickers, was no stranger to our magazine. Mr. Vickers, a family man, and retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant recently passed away at 106 years old, surrounded by his loving family.

Eugene’s daughter, Barbara Vickers said that her father considered his faith and his family his number one priority. “As a family we ate dinner together, many times guessing what he had eaten for lunch that day. He made it a game and we loved to play along,” she recalled. “Dad helped us with our homework, played softball with us, read Bible stories and prayed with us before bed.”

Barbara said that her father was often asked what advice he had for young people with their lives ahead of them. “Proverbs 3:5,6 in the Bible was his answer: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.”

Centenarians will always be with us at each point in history, and all the memories of the lives they’ve lived will continue to live on when passed down. M

THE MARPLE NEWTOWN HIGH SCHOOL STEM ACADEMY: Building Skills to Become Future Leaders

High school students all have their own set of unique strengths and skills. Some students shine on the stage whereas others prefer conducting lab experiments or coding software. Now, Marple Newtown students don't have to wait until college to pursue their academic interests at a deeper level. In September 2021, the Marple Newtown High School STEM Academy welcomed its first cohort of ninth graders (STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

The Marple Newtown High School STEM Academy offers students a rigorous program to learn the skills they need to enhance their academic potential and prepare them to confidently contribute to social, civil and economic outcomes. “STEM teaches students critical thinking and innovation skills, which will help them tremendously in the workforce,” said MNHS Principal

Mr. John Beltrante. “Our students in the program will be equipped to enter college and their future career with knowledge and tools for leadership.”

The program was in the works for several years and, under MNHS principal Mr. Beltrante’s leadership, it came to fruition last year. Mr. Beltrante said that soon after he took on the role as principal, the wheels were turning to create a rigorous, STEM-enriched program for Marple Newtown students. “There was a high level of interest

from staff and faculty to put together this type of program and through a collaborative effort between our CCAC Counselors, the high school administration, the Teaching and Learning Team along with the support of our superintendent, our plan was developed,” he said. “Despite challenges along the way, including the pandemic, the STEM Academy team persevered and welcomed our first class of the STEM Academy in the fall of 2021.”

What sets MNHS’s Stem Academy apart from other STEM programs in our area and in other parts of the country is that it is a school within a school. “Although the STEM Academy students are following a different program, we want the students to have the most normal high school experience as possible,” Mr. Beltrante explained. “We want to give them the new experience and push them, but make sure they are connected with the school and all it has to offer.”

There are three educational pathways for students to choose from:

• Health, Medicine and Biology

• eSports, Media and Communication

• Engineering and Applied Science

Incoming freshmen in the program will get an in-depth look at each pathway through an Exploratory Studies course before choosing a pathway by their 10th-grade year.

MNHS STEM Academy students are required to take two Design Thinking courses as well as several other pathway-specific courses focused on employability skills and the use of design thinking to solve real-world problems. STEM students are also required to take six Advanced Placement courses during the course of their high school career. “Marple’s STEM program provides more rigorous course options,” Mr. Beltrante said. “It is hands-on and challenging, which pushes students to develop independent thought and initiative to succeed.” Depending on the path they choose, there will be STEM-centered electives as well as internship opportunities.

An advisory council comprised of area business and industry professionals help steer the academy’s initiatives. The STEM team was able to bring in a variety of companies in the STEM field for a Career Carousel this past Spring. The students also traveled to Penn State Brandywine to participate in their STEM Pathways Program, an interactive program with faculty and other professionals.

Students in the inaugural cohort already started building the skills they need to become future leaders. From design challenges and business proposals to large presentations, these collaborative team-building experiences broadened their STEM education. “Seeing the level of interest and success the students had in the first year was inspiring,” said Mr. Beltrante.

The mission of Marple Newtown’s STEM Academy is to be a multifaceted, holistic experience that will shape students to be agents of positive change. “We hope to spark their curiosity, open their minds to the possibility of greatness and engage them in learning beyond their current visions of intellectual success,” Mr. Beltrante said. Dental Home Remedies That Work

You may have noticed home remedies circulating on the internet, and wondered about the effectiveness of those targeting oral health issues. Unfortunately, many are anecdotal, untested or unregulated. Some are actually unsafe or even dangerous. Fortunately, there are a few safe and effective home remedies that can help relieve symptoms of some common oral health problems until you can see your dentist.

WARM SALT WATER RINSE: Warm salt water rinsing is one of the oldest, safest and most effective home remedies for various tooth and gum-related maladies. Sore or bleeding gums due to gingivitis and wounds from a recent extraction or an accident, will all heal more quickly with warm salt water. Instructions: Dissolve ½ teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water. It should taste about as salty as seawater. Swish a mouthful for 15 to 30 seconds, then spit it out. Repeat with mouthfuls of that mixture until it’s all used. Repeat this rinse 3 – 5 times daily as needed.

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE RINSE: Some forms of gingivitis are more severe and painful than others. One form is Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis, which can develop when there is a combination of lack of sleep, poor diet, lax hygiene and/or stress. Fortunately, the bacteria that cause this infection are very susceptible to hydrogen peroxide. When used with warm salt water, many cases can be completely resolved without requiring antibiotic treatment. Instructions: Use 4 ounces of 3% hydrogen peroxide or 2 ounces combined with 2 ounces of water, swish a mouthful for 30 seconds, spit it out and repeat until it’s gone. Repeat 2 – 3 times daily as needed.

A WARM, MOIST TEA BAG: A warm, moist Black Tea bag can help stop the bleeding of an extracted tooth. Instructions: Simply roll, moisten and bite gently on the Black Tea bag in the location of the persistent bleeding. Change every 30 – 45 minutes until bleeding has stopped.

A CUP OF MILK OR WATER: A knocked-out tooth can be saved and replaced in the socket if the tooth is quickly placed in milk or water, to help maintain the living cells on the root surface.

CLOVE OIL: Clove oil has been used for centuries to alleviate tooth pain. To reduce pain from a tooth with a broken or lost filling, put a drop or two of clove oil on a folded cotton or gauze pad, and bite down on it at the pain source.

COLD COMPRESS: For an infected or abscessed tooth, a cold compress can offer relief until you can see a medical professional. To get through the night, take Ibuprofen and use a freezer pack or ice cubes wrapped in a dish towel. M

Social Media as a

ogy continues to advance, social media platforms offer another option as a means to reach out to others to let those who would want to know about the passing, know. Of course, as with most things related to social media, it can be difficult to traverse.

One aspect is the return to approaching death as a more public social event, as it had been throughout history until more recent times. When families all lived in close proximity to each other, learning of a death was almost instantaneous. As people started to move farther apart, newspaper obituaries and then personal phone calls became the norm. But in this age of social media the question becomes should you post about the passing of someone you know in an effort to get the word out to family, friends, coworkers or anyone who might care to know?

If it’s been decided that social media would be an appropriate means of announcement, keep the deceased and the family in mind when sharing the news, while keeping the information as private and respectful as possible. The best time to do this is

and convenient idea to connect people with the funeral home’s online remembrance page, where they can find out when and where the viewing, funeral and interment will be, as well as leave memories and condolences for the family. Some people choose to trust the responsibility to another family member or a close friend to take care of social media posts on their behalf. When doing so, remember to discuss with them what you’re willing to share and let them know that they can ignore posts or questions that fall outside those boundaries, or are disrespectful of your wishes.

The bottom line is that since technology is such a part of our lives, using social media as a way of notification and information when a loved one has passed is perfectly acceptable these days. If doing so works for you, embrace it and keep these tips in mind. M
