T

he Broomall Rotary Club (BRC) has founded many programs that bring pride to the Marple community and reflect the overall spirit and mission of the club.

From humanitarian programs overseas to local programs like Student of the Month, vocational awards and scholarship funds, their projects reflect their motto: service above self. Their latest project was inspired by Rotary International's newest area of focus, supporting the environment. Working with the Marple Tree Commission (MTC), BRC members recently began planting hybrid American Chestnut trees on private and public land, helping to restore the natural balance of trees here in Marple township.

Once known as the perfect tree for its high-quality lumber and nutritious food, the American Chestnut tree was virtually wiped out in the early 1900s. Before the 20th century, this tree accounted for 20% of the forest. Chestnuts were an especially valuable food for indigenous people and early settlers. The trees also supported many other species, ranging from 56 moth species whose caterpillars ate Chestnut leaves, to countless species of birds that relished their nuts, to large mammals such as black bears that relied upon the nuts as a main source of nourishment before hibernation. Sadly, a blight from Japan in 1904 left the trees virtually extinct by the 1950s.

Currently there are only a handful of American Chestnuts of size in Pennsylvania. The dead trees re-sprout from the roots, get the disease and eventually die several decades later and re-grow again.

By raising funds and collaborating with the tree commission, the Rotary Club was able to purchase 12 disease-resistant hybrid American Chestnut trees from a mail order nursery and they’ve already begun planting them. Spearheading the project is former Rotary Club President Lou Pace, and longtime Rotarian and Broomall resident Paul Quintavalla. Paul explained that the best time to plant the trees is in early spring or late fall, when trees are dormant. Rick Ray, a retired assistant professor of landscape horticulture, assisted Paul with purchasing the trees last summer and stored them at the MTC nursery until they were planted in March. “They’ve been guiding us every step of the way,” Paul said. “We are confident in success.”

The MTC was founded 16 years ago and is all volunteers. Rick coordinates the planting and care of all trees newly planted by the MTC and is a frequent guest lecturer at the BRC meetings.

“Anytime I have the opportunity to twist people’s arms about planting trees, I’ll do it!” said Rick.

So far, six hybrid American Chestnut trees have been planted on the grounds of Delaware County Community College (DCCC). Chris Sim, the grounds supervisor at DCCC, selected and prepared a site along Media Line Rd where the trees were planted. Three trees were planted on private property within a block of each other and the other trees are going to continue to grow for two years in the MTC nursery until they can be planted with a good root system and minimum deer protection. “It promises to be a very welcome return to our forest,” said Paul.

Projects like these that support the environment are just one of the many ways the BRC brings positive changes in the world and right here in our community. “Scientists have given us a chance to make things right with nature and we’re making the most of it,” said Lou. How Much Power Does It Take to Charge an Electric Vehicle?

lectric vehicles (EVs) are now part of the norm. You can find more varieties, styles and manufacturers than ever before, from small compact cars to tractor trailer-size vehicles, and everything in between.

Advances in the lithium batteries and motors used in EVs plus skyrocketing gas prices have made the manufacturing, purchasing, maintaining and driving of EVs much more economically sensible. Add to that how much fun EVs can be to drive, with amenities like large touch screens, advanced navigation and even autonomous driving, the numbers of EVs on the road will undoubtedly continue to increase.

EVs can drive hundreds of miles on a full charge, depending on the conditions and type of driving you’re doing. Driving the speed limit, using accessories like heat or air conditioning and the number of passengers can all affect the driving mileage between charging stops.

Public charging stations are increasing exponentially as mandated by the Federal Government. These charging stations can be found along all major interstates, in gasoline stations, hotels and even restaurant parking lots.

However, one of the easiest and most sensible locations to charge your EV is at home. Of course, there are several considerations that require investigation and inspection before charging can take place at home. For instance, your home’s electrical service panel must have enough space for additional power circuits to be installed, and the level of your electrical service must be enough to accommodate the additional load of the car being charged.

The location of the electrical panel in relation to the desired charging location is also an issue to sort out. Charging equipment can be installed inside the garage or outside in weatherproof enclosures.

You’ll also want to explore different charging methods. One option is to purchase from the dealer a charging unit that’s specifically made for your EV. Another method is to install an appropriate power receptacle or outlet. Most vehicles come

Howard Johnson’s in Broomall Written by Doug Humes

H

oward Johnson of Boston opened up a restaurant in Quincy, Massachusetts, specializing in ice cream, hamburgers and hot dogs. Not a novel idea. But Howard was a pioneer – in 1935 he came up with the idea of ranching his restaurant – selling the rights to local investors allowing them to use the name, food, supplies and logo, in exchange for a fee.

The idea took off. By the 1960’s, it was the largest restaurant chain in the country, with more than 1,000 “HoJo’s” restaurants with their distinctive orange roof. In another innovation, the company secured rights to put its restaurants at rest stops on limited access turnpikes, giving them the exclusive right to serve travelers on those highways. In fact, the first turnpike restaurant in the country was opened by Howard Johnson’s on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Broomall had its very own HoJo’s, at the southeast corner of Sproul Road and West Chester Pike, the current site of the BP gas station. The first mention I found in the newspapers was in 1951. It was a novelty – a nice sit down restaurant in the new suburbs - and people flocked to it for their steaks, 28 flavors of ice cream and meetings of community groups. Santa showed up in 1951 so that parents did not have to take their children to 69th Street or Center City for the experience.

Unlike other area HoJo’s, which continued in business into the 1970’s and 1980’s, the Broomall location changed its affiliation and became Fishers Restaurant in 1957. Old timers recall visiting after school events, and the great cheeseburgers they served. But Fishers had a short life at the site as well, as it was severely damaged by a fire in 1962. Rather than rebuild, they sold the property and the iconic building with the orange roof was demolished to make way for a new Esso gas station.

The HoJo’s brand had a longer run, but fast food competition hurt their business. Marriott bought the brand in 1982 and converted many of the restaurants to Bob’s Big Boy restaurants. The number of restaurants continued to diminish and the last one closed in 2016. An era had ended.

Whether it’s a group activity or simply giving her time to go to the gym by herself, the whole family should be on board to make the day exactly what she wants.

Gift Time – Just like on your birthday, there comes a special time of the day when you can expect to be showered with gifts.

I

n honor of Mother’s Day this month, we’re introducing readers to three generations of strong women: Julia Baris, her mother, Susan Herring, and her grandmother, Ruthe (aka Bubbe) Kabler. After several years of living on the same street in Broomall, they've learned that they’re Stronger Together.

Julia Baris grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Friends’ Central High School in Wynnewood. She furthered her education at Muhlenberg College, earning a Bachelor’s degree in English. During her time at Muhlenberg, Julia discovered she had a knack for playwriting and earned several accolades for her work there. Although she had a talent for writing, ultimately, she knew she’d wanted to become a lawyer and studied law at Rutgers Law School, graduating in 2008 with a Juris Doctor degree.

After law school, Julia practiced law for the Community Health Law Project, which provides law services for low-income and disabled populations. While she enjoyed her time as a lawyer, she felt she needed more flexibility once her children were born. She currently owns two daycares/preschools in the area, a career that allows her more flexibility with her family, but she hasn’t ruled out practicing law again as her children get older.

Julia met her husband Paul in 2011 at a Quizzo Night. Paul had once lived in Philadelphia but was now living in Chicago.

One night during a flight layover in Philadelphia, he asked some friends to meet up for a drink and as it turned out, Julia was the only one who was able to go out that night. “It unexpectedly turned into a date,” explained Julia. “We realized that night how much we liked each other!”

When Julia introduced Paul to her family, her mom thought he was 99% perfect. The 1%? He lived in Chicago. Direct flights from Philly to Chicago made it possible for them to visit each 10 Marple Friends & Neighbors / Bringing People Together

other every weekend. They eventually got engaged in Disney World, and because the couple both love all things Disney, they held their nuptials at the Moroccan pavilion at Epcot, followed by a reception in the French pavilion there.

After the wedding, Julia moved to Chicago with Paul to start their married life. They wanted to start a family, but it didn't come as easy as they had hoped. “At first I wanted to leave it in God's hands, and I wasn’t ready to try in vitro fertilization (IVF),” explained Julia. “But my grandmother desperately wanted to see me as a mom. In 2016 she got very sick and needed surgery. She was close to giving up and didn’t want to have the surgery. I told her if she had the surgery, I would do IVF. She was in surgery the next day!” Paul and Julia’s IVF resulted in two beautiful daughters. They also have seven remaining embryos that were adopted by another couple who

have become like family. Paul also has two sons from a previous marriage, Matthew, who lives in Dallas and Michael, who lives in San Diego. Michael has three step-children, making Paul and Julia grandparents too!

In 2017 Julia and her husband Paul were living in Chicago when a house for sale popped up on the same street where her mother and step-father lived in Broomall. Paul’s job had brought them to Chicago in 2015, but when Julia found out she was pregnant with their first child, they decided they wanted to raise the baby closer to family. “My mother jokingly asked, ‘Are you sure you want to live so close to us’?” recalled Julia. Julia said she had no hesitation to live close to her mom, especially on such a beautiful street in a great neighborhood.

“As a child, I grew up around the corner from my grandparents and had fond memories of them being actively involved in my childhood,” said Julia. “I knew I wanted that for my own children.”

Julia and Paul’s oldest daughter is four-year-old Eliana. She attends Pre-K at Temple Sholom in Broomall and loves gymnastics, swimming, baking and Disney. Julia said she is definitely a goofball, but she’s very kind and sensitive, especially to her peers at school. Eliana’s little sister Alia is a two-year-old diva.

For the past five years, the Baris family has lived on Ceton Court, just a few houses down from her mom, Susan, and her step-father Ross. Susan and Ross married in 2006. It was a second marriage for both, they each had two children and Susan’s home wasn’t quite big enough for their blended family. They began house hunting, and although they looked at dozens of homes in several communities, they kept coming back to Broomall.

“We liked the friendliness of the people,” said Susan.

“Our neighbors have become like family and we lookout for each other.”

Susan Herring grew up in Overbrook Park, where she then raised Julia and her brother Chip. After earning a Nursing Degree in 1975 from Thomas Jefferson University, she worked as a nurse at Lankenau Medical Center until she retired in 2019. In 2003, the same year that Julia graduated from college, she graduated with a Master’s in Education from Widener University. “We graduated the same weekend,” said Susan.

“Of course I proudly attended Julia’s graduation instead of my own!”

Susan recently completed the requirements to volunteer with Citizens Corps of Delaware County and looks forward to aiding in their missions. “Once a nurse, always a nurse!” added Susan.

Her husband Ross retired from his job as a pilot for American

Airlines in 2020, so soon after, they purchased a home in Florida intending to be snowbirds. But when the pandemic hit, plans changed a bit. Susan invited her son Chip, his wife Jayna and their son Kieran to stay with them so she could help with childcare. “They stayed with us for a year until moving back to their home in Philadelphia,” said Susan. “They loved Broomall, so I am hoping that they move here someday!” Every month Susan heads to Florida for a week, but she's not quite ready to spend all winter down there. Most of her time here in Marple is spent caring for her grandchildren and her mother, Ruthe.

Ruthe Kabler, known to her family as Bubbe, is the matriarch of the family. Turning 98 later this month, she’s been blessed with three children, 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Born and raised in West Philadelphia, Ruthe graduated from West Philadelphia High School in 1942. After graduating from high school, Ruthe went on to the Levitan Business School to prepare herself for secretarial work. Up until a few years ago, when she began suffering from arthritis, she’d been knitting and sewing and over the years, she made snowsuits for her two sons, a myriad of blankets, sweaters and bathing suits.

Married to her high school sweetheart, Ruthe and her husband Eddie lived in Overbrook Park for 48 years and raised their children there. As an active member of the Congregation Beth T’fillah, she served as president of the Sisterhood and also ran their gift shop for 20 years. The Kabler family was a big Scouting family. Eddie was a pack leader and Ruthe enjoyed being a Den mother for her sons Ron and Gary, and a Girl Scout Troop leader for Susan’s troop.

Ruthe was living in her own home in Wynnewood after Eddie passed away. When she suffered a bad fall in 2020 and needed full-time care, the family was uncomfortable sending her to a nursing home because of the pandemic. Since Susan already had Chip and his family living in her home, Julia and Paul decided the best thing to do was to move Bubbe into their guest room and she’s been there ever since. “We love having her here,” said Julia. “It’s really special that my daughters get to spend so much time with their great-grandmother.”

The neighbors on Ceton Court have given Ruthe a warm welcome into the neighborhood. “Everyone is so nice and I especially love attending the block parties,” said Ruthe. “And this past year my grandkids even pushed me in a wheelchair house to house on Halloween so that I could trick or treat with them!”

Since she’s a little less mobile now, Ruthe spends her free time reading the newspaper and watching the Game Show Network.

She also looks forward to when the whole family comes to

visit. “There is nothing better than a phone call or visit from one of my grandkids or great-grandkids!” She’s also famous for her manicures, even posting photos on Facebook. “I love trying new designs and honoring my family with specialized nails,” Ruthe explained. “In March, I spelled “Ruthe” on one hand and “Eddie” on the other for what would have been our 79th anniversary.”

Julia, Susan and Ruthe share many of the same interests, including traveling and going to the theater. And all three women are active with the Delaware County Chabad, which Julia said is an amazing Jewish community like nothing she’s experienced before. “The rabbi even comes to our house since it’s often difficult for my grandmother to travel to events.”

“My mom, grandmother and I have all faced challenges in life, but we are all very strong,” said Julia. “Now that we’re living on the same street here in Marple, we like to say, “We’re Stronger Together!” Thank you Julia, Susan and Ruthe for sharing your story of three hardworking, caring and strong moms. The May Student of the Month is Marissa D’Ambrosio, a Senior at Marple Newtown High School. Marissa received a Certificate of Achievement in recognition of Excellence in Service to her school, her peers and the community.

Not only is Marissa a straight-A student and a member of the National Honor Society, but she’s also the Flag Captain of the Marple Newtown High School Marching Band Color Guard. She wants people to know that the Marching Band Color Guard can be a fun extracurricular activity for kids who don’t play a musical instrument.

Marissa takes great initiative in promoting, publicizing and recruiting for the Color Guard in every way she can, and would like to introduce it to middle school students so they can get started early.

However, the most notable thing about Marissa is that she is the Founder and President of the Marple Civic Youth (MCY) organization. In 2020, when the pandemic changed everything in the world and caused social isolation and lack of camaraderie, Marissa decided to do something about it for herself, her friends, fellow students and even students from lower grades. So she

approached the Marple Civic Association (MCA) with the idea of creating a Youth Division, and the MCA was eager to be supportive. Marissa started MCY for grade 6–12 students who reside in Marple Newtown, as an outlet to get kids together in leadership roles and to provide milestone events that were missing due to the pandemic. Teens from different grades and schools are invited to participate, so everyone feels welcome and included.

Along with the volunteer opportunities that MCY has taken part in, including Kids Against Hunger, Austin’s Army events and the Domestic Abuse Project, what Marissa is most proud of is how much she and the other students in the group have grown in friendship, confidence, social skills, problem solving and life and leadership skills. She intends to remain active in MCY as Founding President while attending the University of Pittsburgh.

How a Setback Can Be a Reset

H

ave you ever been super consistent with your exercise routine, only to find your flow interrupted by an injury?

We’ve all been there. You’d do anything to get back to your favorite class but your body just won’t cooperate. Maybe you feel fine, as long as you avoid certain positions, movements or activities. Or you’re uncomfortable just sitting at your desk and you know a workout will only exacerbate your pain.

You worry about all your hard work going down the drain as you lose fitness. To top it off, you’re missing out on the post-workout endorphins you count on to lift your mood and boost your productivity.

You’d never choose to be injured, but you can always choose your attitude. Here are three steps to help you cope with setbacks like injuries.

Change Your Self-Talk When you think of your injury and how it’s affecting your newly established routine, be careful to reframe any negative self-talk.

(Yes, we all talk to ourselves, even if we don’t do it aloud.)

Instead of: If I skip working out for a month, I’ll never get back on track.

Be Proactive Adopting a growth mindset means taking responsibility for your own fitness. Instead of throwing your hands up and saying “I’m injury-prone so I might as well quit,” you’re empowered to say “How can I make sure to keep persistently coming to class?” You might start with a visit to your physician, a physical therapist, a massage therapist or a chiropractor to alleviate your symptoms, and ultimately address the root cause.

Be Curious Rather than beating yourself up about your injury, approach it with curiosity. Ask yourself how it might have happened — and be honest with yourself when answering. Did you go from zero classes to five sessions per week right out of the gate? Are you having a hard time recalling the last time you replaced your running shoes? Do you tend to approach every class as a competition? Are you consistently under-fueled or sleepdeprived? Treat your injury as an opportunity for self-inquiry.

With the right mindset, your injury can actually be a chance for a reset rather than a setback. M

irrors are a versatile design feature. Not only do they maximize light and boost the sense of space, they also can add instant glamour and interest.

Decorating with mirrors is easy to master when you learn some tricks of the trade. Here are five tips for how to use mirrors in your home.

Make Your Mirror a Focal Point Just like pictures and paintings, mirrors also make great focal points. When you have space to fill above a mantle, a mirror with a beautiful frame can be shown off like a piece of artwork. If you have a room that doesn’t have an obvious focal point, hanging a mirror in an interesting frame can help draw your attention.

Bigger Is Better Although a large picture or painting can overwhelm a room, a large mirror does the opposite. Choose one that's larger to make a smaller room look bigger. The larger the mirror, the more light it will reflect back, which can help with small spaces that don’t get a lot of light or are painted a dark color. Small mirrors usually look better in groups.

Get the Mirror’s Height Right Always hang your mirror at an appropriate height. Large mirrors above a fireplace should be hung fairly close (less than 4" above) or actually sit on the mantel. Smaller mirrors that are hung on the wall like a picture should be positioned at eye

Picture-Perfect Pruning

P

runing is the removal or reduction of problematic branches, limbs and stems from trees and shrubs.

Pruning removes dead or diseased branches, and eliminates branches that chafe and could create an access point for insects and disease. Trees and shrubs also benefit from pruning because it helps manage their growth and structure, and encourages the development of new growth, keeping trees and shrubs healthy, strong and more disease resistant.

Reduction: Cutting back to lateral growth to control tree size. Removing small branches that are attached to the larger, heavier branches so that your trees don’t become too top-heavy.

Here are some basic pruning techniques and what they are used for:

Elevating: Cutting back low lying branches, needed for clearance or aesthetic purposes.

Crown Thinning: Removing smaller, weaker limbs from the canopy to allow more light to reach through to the center branches and to improve air circulation reducing weight and strengthening the trees overall stability.

Pollarding: Removing most of the branches (done only when a tree is dormant, usually in the winter or very early spring) so that all that remains are the secondary branches and the main trunk or stem, to produce dense new growth.

Dead Pruning: Eliminating dead, dying or diseased branches.

Less is definitely more when it comes to pruning. Excess pruning can shorten a tree’s life, affect its natural growth and can cause trauma that will not heal properly. As a general rule, it’s usually best to cut no more than 25% of the foliage.

Timing is extremely important when pruning. The best time to prune is during late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. The least desirable time to prune is immediately after new growth develops in the spring.

It’s also advisable to limit the amount of pruning done in late summer, as new growth may be encouraged on some plants.

This growth may not have sufficient time to solidify or become hardy before cold weather arrives, resulting in cold damage or winter kill.

It’s important not to cover pruning cuts with tree paint, which so many homeowners do. Research shows that sealing cuts or wounds on trees doesn’t speed their healing at all, and can actually promote decay and slow down the healing process. It’s best to simply let the cuts seal on their own.

Unfortunately, many homeowners don’t take the time to research how to properly take care of pruning until it’s too late. Hopefully this article helps you have a better idea of how and when to prune, for the life of your trees and garden. Making a Successful Move to a Senior Community: Managing Separation Anxiety

M

oving into any senior community — whether it’s Assisted Living, a Personal Care Home or a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) — is a dynamic process marked by an array of transitions and unknowns. This transition can be stressful and sometimes traumatic for all involved if it happens abruptly. Family members are separating themselves from a loved one, and the senior is starting a new chapter of their lives.

Some amount of separation anxiety is normal, although it becomes problematic when it disrupts a person’s life. When excessive displays of fear, worry or distress are seen, it can have additional negative effects on emotional function, family life and even the physical health of those involved.

Strategies are available to manage separation anxieties. In addition to pharmaceutical interventions (prescription medications to help a person through their most acute symptoms) and

support groups (to help provide alternative thinking and experiences from those in similar situations), there are also more targeted management strategies to ease separation anxiety.

Some family-centered actions to take include: • Treat the anxiety seriously and react with understanding and patience.

• Stay calm, matter-of-fact and sympathetic. Acknowledge the stress for everyone and that these feelings are normal.

• Practice short-term separations. Schedule visits where the individual spends a day within the eldercare community, letting everyone involved experience the separation. These scheduled visits can include respite stays and/or joining resident activities within the community.

• Prepare the senior for the separation by reassuring them the family will be communicating with them and seeing them regularly.

The senior must develop an adequate sense of safety and trust in the new environment and with the new care team outside of the family. Family members need to maintain control over their own anxieties. If the senior senses distress, it may signal doubt and increase anxiety.

he Marple Newtown community has a long history of honoring and remembering our servicemen and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. From decorating area gravesites to marching down West Chester Pike, we pause to pay tribute to our deceased military and their families.

Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, is a federal holiday observed every year on the last Monday of May. It originally began as a way to honor our soldiers who died in the Civil War, with the first national celebration taking place on May 30, 1868. After World War I, the holiday was expanded to honor all American war fatalities.

Decoration Day was recognized as a federal holiday in 1938.

referred to as Memorial Day, and the federal government officially adopted that holiday name in 1967. The following year, the passing of the Uniform Holidays Bill declared that Memorial Day would be celebrated on the last Monday in May regardless of the date.

Throughout the United States and in local communities, it’s common to visit cemeteries and decorate the graves of our deceased soldiers with flowers, wreaths and American flags.

Other common traditions include raising the United States flag quickly to the top of flagpoles, lowering it slowly to half-mast to honor our fallen soldiers, then raising it again to full height at noon, as a symbol of the commitment of the living to carry on our fight for freedom.

Remembering those we have lost

The tradition of wearing or displaying red poppies to remember our military grew out of the famous poem “In Flanders Fields,” written during World War I by Canadian physician LieutenantColonel John McCrae. Below is the poem’s first verse.

Local veterans will lead the parade along with the Broomall Fire Company, Police, EMS and Army vehicles. Spectators will enjoy performances by the Paxon Hollow Middle School and Marple Newtown High School Tiger Marching Bands, local Boy Scout troops and other local performers. Leading the parade in a police car will be US Army Veteran Brad Bitting, who was wounded three times and received two Congressional Medals of Honor for heroic deeds when he served in the Persian Gulf. The parade’s closing ceremony, which will be held at Post 805 and will include a rifle ceremony, will be led by Post Commander Gerald Nail. M

If you’d like to honor and remember our fallen military this Memorial Day, there are some local events you can attend and places to visit.

On Monday May 30th, the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association (DCVMA) will hold a short ceremony and wreath-laying at the Delaware County Veterans Memorial located at 4599 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square. The ceremony begins at 8:30am. In addition, if you would like to memorialize and celebrate the life and legacy of your veteran, DCVMA performs casket flag ceremonies at 5pm on the second Sunday of every month from April through November.

The Marple Newtown Memorial Day Parade will take place on Memorial Day, Monday May 30th at 10am. The parade route starts at the intersection of Malin Rd and West Chester Pike.

Then it travels eastbound on West Chester Pike to the American Legion Post 805. “After a two-year hiatus, we want to make the parade as joyful as possible,” said Demetrius Spiropoulos, First Vice Commander of the American Legion Post 805. “It’s a great way to connect with the community.”

he year 2021 forced many students to not only attend school virtually, it left them missing out on many events that they typically look forward to as a rite of passage.

But instead of complaining when things were canceled, one group of local teens took the initiative to bring people together.

In fact, they made it their motto: Teens Taking Action. In collaboration with the Marple Civic Association, six Marple Newtown High School (MNHS) students served on the Marple Civic Youth (MCY) Executive Board to create safe events for teens that benefitted the whole Marple community.

Since it was founded in early 2021, the MCY has proven that teens have the power to make a difference. Not only did they organize numerous successful events, they learned valuable skills in the process. With all of the executive board members (Dom Carafa, Marissa D’Ambrosio, Joe Downs, Kaley Musi and Christian Sessa and Morgan Hopson) graduating this spring, it’s now time to pass the torch down to the next group of young leaders.

well received by the Marple Community, especially when many events were canceled. “Hosting a Dodgeball Tournament for the middle schoolers was so much fun,” said Christian Sessa, who served as the Vice President. “Seeing all of the smiles on the kids' faces was very rewarding!”

When local junior proms had to be canceled in the spring of 2021 due to the pandemic, the MCY organized an outdoor prom at a local swim club for any local high school junior to attend. It was not only beautiful but a big success and appreciated by the teens in the community who otherwise would not have had a prom. MNHS senior Morgan Hopson said the MCY’s junior prom and reputation in the community inspired her to join the group and eventually serve as its publicity chair.

“Serving on the MCY board really taught me leadership skills,” she said. “I realized how important it was to be a role model and mentor to the younger members.”

Marple Newtown High School senior Marissa D’Ambrosio founded the group and served as its President. “What was great about Marple Civic Youth was not only did I make lifelong friends, I was able to build confidence and learn skills that will help me in college and beyond,” said Marissa, who is heading to the University of Pittsburgh in August.

Demetra D’Ambrosio, Marissa’s mother and the parent advisor for the group, said that although there was adult supervision, ultimately the teens were responsible for organizing all of the events. “They really learned some critical life skills,” she said.

“From advocating for themselves to learning technical skills and understanding fundraising, they learned they were capable of putting together events on their own. I was so impressed by them!” Dom Carafa said that his role as the group's youth Chair, overseeing middle school members and helping them get involved with ideas and events, taught him valuable skills.

After high school, Dom is looking forward to playing baseball at a college in Florida and can take the skills he learned from the MCY and apply them in college and beyond. “Serving on the group's board definitely helped with my communication skills,” said Dom. “It also taught me a lot about prioritizing my work and being organized.”

The group met monthly to brainstorm ideas for events that could bring teens together to socialize and also meet the needs of the community. Events like the Dodgeball Tournament, Field Day and an “Egg-Cellent” Easter Egg Hunt event were 26 Marple Friends & Neighbors / Bringing People Together

The current board has been able to pass down the skills they learned to its newer and younger members as they take on these leadership roles. Bella Dreger, who will be a senior this fall at MNHS will serve as the new President and other board members include incoming freshmen Nick D’Ambrosio, Rachel D’Ambrosio, Natalie Vella, Faith Descher, Ava Castellante, Tysen Soto and Justine Rimple, who all bring unique sets of skills and talents. “I know the new board members will continue to carry out our mission of teens taking action and will be great leaders,” said Marissa.

The new board members have already proven themselves to be leaders. They’ve been instrumental in planning several spring 2022 events, including this year’s “Egg-Cellent” Easter Event, a Pizzeria Uno Fundraiser, a Prom Dress sale, an essential items collection for Ukrainian refugees and an 8th-grade Graduation Dance. The MCY was also able to award an MCY member

with $250 scholarships. After applications were reviewed by the Vice Presidents and Managers of Republic Bank and Citizens Bank, Marissa was selected as the recipient due to her vision, service and outstanding leadership for creating and leading the MCY. “It’s been an honor to have been part of this group of leaders,” said social media Chair Kaley Musi. “It was fun and rewarding to give back to the community.” “The best thing about these events in the community is that everyone is welcome,” added Dom. “No matter where you come from, building new connections is always important.” For more information on how to volunteer with Marple Civic Youth, reach out by directly messaging the Civic Youth on Instagram (@MarpleCivicYouth) and Facebook.
