Daylight gets longer every day this month, which will have many participating in Passover traditions and celebrating Easter, and many also honoring Earth Day and Arbor Day. (I won’t mention — but keep it in mind — that rather “taxing” April 18th deadline, which is back in April this year.)

With Passover beginning April 15th, and Good Friday being April 15th leading to Easter celebrated on April 17th, no doubt many will be taking part in religious observances, particularly in these times of continued COVID-19 cautions, global tensions and war. Prayers are needed. And so what better time for Marple Friends & Neighbors readers to find on our pages a directory of the many places of worship in Marple Newtown. Broomall and our greater Marple Newtown community are home to many different faith communities. When it comes to your HVAC system, avoiding certain behaviors and ensuring you don’t neglect proper maintenance is critical to keeping your system functioning. Winter might be fading away (for now), but spring and summer have their own challenges, and indoor air quality is important year round. To protect your family’s health and keep your HVAC system in tip-top shape, here is your spring to-don’t list.

DON’T forget to clean your furnace room Add the furnace room to your spring clean-up list so your equipment has the right amount of clearance for safe and efficient operation.

DON’T neglect a tune-up Neglecting your HVAC equipment is another habit to change this spring. Add this to the top of your to-do list for the season, and you’ll reap the benefits for the years added to your equipment’s lifespan. Even though we’re moving out of the “furnace season,” this is a great time to address any possible issues your furnace may have developed from keeping you warm all winter. Tuning up your air conditioner during the spring season will also prepare you for the sweltering heat before it becomes a problem.

DON’T ignore your ventilation Ventilation is critical regardless of the season, but if you have allergies that act up in the spring, it may be tempting to shut all the windows and recirculate air to avoid outdoor allergens.

That’s not the solution. A robust ventilation system gives you the benefit of outdoor air without exposure to allergens from outside. Ensure that your exhaust systems work, and consider a heat recovery ventilation system with high-efficiency filters to get the benefit of outdoor air without the allergens.

DON’T leave your thermostat turned up As the temperature outside rises, you might take this opportunity to experience an early summer indoors. However, this wastes energy and is unnecessary for you to maintain indoor comfort levels. If you have a programmable thermostat, lower your setpoints as the weather improves, or do it manually as needed. M

Read This Before You Buy an Electric Vehicle!

I

t’s obvious that 2022 is the year of the Electric Vehicle (EV).

From the Ford Mustang Mach-E to the luxury MercedesBenz EQS, many legacy automakers are already in the game. There are also new automakers focusing solely on EVs, such as Lucid, Rivian and Polestar.

Quite a bit of pre-purchase consideration usually goes into the car’s looks, trim level and performance. Comparatively, very little thought goes into the upkeep of the investment, including repairs and maintenance. So here are several important things — aside from how an EV looks and drives — that you should consider before purchasing one.

• Suspension: To put it concisely, potholes do not discriminate against the types of cars they affect!

Other Repairs and Updates Depending on the manufacturer, some repairs may have to be completed at the dealer due to the parts needed for the repair. For example, Tesla does not allow independent shops to purchase certain parts. Most EVs can get software updates over-the-air via Wi-Fi, but some may need a trip to the service center for a hardwired connection. M

Charging The most common concern EV buyers have is how and where to keep it charged! In the Marple Newtown area, there are only two public charging stations, where there are currently five gas stations. Unless there’s a charging station that offers your vehicle’s charging type and speed at or near where you work, you’ll most likely be charging your EV at home.

Inspection and Emissions EVs still require a yearly PA State Safety Inspection and Emissions test. However, because EVs don’t have an Evaporative Emission System (EVAP), which disposes of fuel vapors before they’re released into the atmosphere like fuel-run vehicles, they are exempt from the Emissions test and automatically pass.

Maintenance Your typical Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicle requires regular oil changes, but with Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), no oil change is needed. Instead, most of your visits to the mechanic will be for tires and suspension work.

• Tires: Many have seen the power a BEV has on the road, with its roller coaster-esque acceleration. To achieve that, BEVs require a lot of traction, which eats tires like there’s no tomorrow! That’s why BEVs — especially Teslas — are more frequently in for new tires than ICEs. • Rotations and Alignments: These two services will almost replace your regular oil changes as preventative, proactive maintenance that prolongs the life of the tires you invest in.

T

his month we are pleased to introduce you to the Pastris Family: Evangelo, Chanda, Nicholas and Alexandra. If there is one thing this family knows, it’s that hard work pays off.

Both Evangelo and Chanda grew up in Broomall and they are both proud Marple Newtown High School (MNHS) graduates. Although they’ve known each other since middle school and were friends in high school, they didn’t start dating until much later.

Chanda attended Worrall Elementary, Paxon Hollow Middle School and graduated from MNHS in 1990. Growing up with her family in a house near Worrall made for an ideal childhood. She was able to walk to school with the neighborhood kids, and after school and on weekends, she and her friends played outside until it was dark or they got called in for dinner.

Evangelo grew up on the other side of town with his parents and sisters in the Lawrence Park section of Broomall. He went to Loomis Elementary, Paxon Hollow and eventually MNHS, graduating the same year as Chanda. Both Chanda and Evangelo were active at Marple. In fact, they were both on the spring track team. During the fall season, Chanda played field hockey while Evangelo played soccer.

Chanda was interested in fashion and design, so after high school she decided to further her education at Drexel University, earning a degree in Business Merchandising in 1994. After college, she landed a job for Kohl's stores in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. As a visual designer for the company, she trained visual merchandisers on how to dress mannequins and create on-floor designs. “I loved the ability to be so creative,” said Chanda. “It was like being given a blank canvas!”

student, Evangelo worked to pay for his own tuition by bussing tables at a local restaurant and working as a valet at the Newtown Squire. “My mom and dad had a strong work ethic and instilled that in me,” Evangelo explained. “I watched how hard my parents worked to raise a family with good values and I wanted to do the same thing.” After graduating in 1995, he began his career by working in the mortgage industry.

It wasn’t until Chanda and Evangelo were out of college that their paths crossed again. When they were in their early 20s, both enjoyed going out to the popular nightclubs on Delaware Avenue in Philadelphia. As fate would have it, they were both out with friends at Club Egypt when they reconnected.

Evangelo made sure to get Chanda’s number before the night was over, and the rest is history. They married in 1999, not only at the same church where Evangelo’s parents were married (St. George Orthodox Greek Cathedral in Philadelphia), they were even married by the same priest. After a honeymoon in Aruba, the newly married couple settled in Exton, which was close to both of their jobs at the time.

When Chanda and Evangelo were first married, they took a fabulous trip to Greece. They were able to explore many of the islands, including Limnos, where Evangelo’s dad was born and

lived until he was 16. “What made the trip really special was getting to connect with some of Evangelo’s family and friends who still lived in Greece,” said Chanda. “We really got to know the people and learned so much about their life on the island.”

Evangelo and Chanda were eager to take their own children there last year, but due to COVID-19, they had to postpone.

“We are looking forward to someday bringing our kids there, and we’d love to bring Evangelo’s dad too so that he can reconnect with his family,” Chanda added. Thankfully, before the pandemic, the Pastris family was able to enjoy trips to various tropical places, including two trips to Turks and Caicos and many trips to the Jersey shore.

Over the years, life led both Chanda and Evangelo down different career paths than they had originally planned. When Chanda’s children were young, she stayed home with them and played an active role in their schools and extracurricular activities. “I was very lucky to have that time with the kids when they were little,” Chanda said. “When I decided to return to work, I found a job that I am passionate about, but is totally different from what I was doing after college.” She now works for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. “We focus on creating an internal culture which values and serves all employees,” she said. “We also take our responsibility to serve our customers and community very seriously.” Chanda is also an ambassador of the PA Turnpike Women’s Network, which combines both of these elements. “I am able to connect with women all across

Resident Feature our system,” Chanda explained. “Currently, our women’s network is working to bring awareness to the problem of human trafficking.” This initiative provides victims and those who travel our roadways the tools they need to take the appropriate action when a case of human trafficking is suspected.

When Chanda isn’t working, she can be found in the kitchen. “If I had the time, I’d spend all day in the kitchen cooking and listening to Frank Sinatra,” she said. The combination of her Italian background and her father-in-law’s experience as a chef have inspired her to experiment with new dishes. “My father-in-law doesn’t really use recipes,” she explained. “It’s a pinch of this… a pinch of that! I like to take some of the Greek dishes he makes and add a little Italian flair to them.”

Just as Chanda’s fatherin-law influenced her in the kitchen, her own father had an influence on Evangelo’s career change.

What began 22 years ago as temporarily helping out his father-in-law at his jewelry store eventually led to Evangelo becoming a jeweler and certified diamond gemologist. Started by Chanda’s father Michael more than 30 years ago, Lauria Jewelers buys, crafts and sells jewelry that keeps customers coming back to celebrate all of their special occasions. Sadly Chanda’s dad passed away in 2012, but Evangelo has been able to continue producing the same quality products and strives to continue his legacy on jewelers row in Philadelphia. He’s also enjoyed the career shift from a desk job to a customer-driven one. “As a jeweler, I’ve met people who have become lifelong friends,” said Evangelo. “I love seeing the children of longtime customers come back to make their own purchases. It’s so rewarding to see all of the generations come through.”

Chanda and Evangelo have two children, Nicholas (Nick) and Alexandra, both of whom attended Marple Newtown schools.

Chanda and Evangelo said they are proud of how hard both of their kids work every day. “As parents we’ve tried to instill in them the same work ethic that Chanda and I had growing up,” said Evangelo. “There are no guarantees in life,” added Chanda. “We’ve always tried to be role models and show our children that you have to work for what you want.”

Nick graduated from MNHS in 2019. Known as the life of the party, Nick’s parents said that he has been a people person since he was a young boy. “He’d ride his big wheel over to the neighbor’s house as soon as he saw him come home from work just to ask him how his day was,” his mom explained. “He was known in the neighborhood as ‘the Mayor.’”

Nick now works as a teaching assistant for kindergarten through fifth grade at The Shipley School. Always passionate about working with children, he worked with elementary-age kids at Shipley for his senior project when he was a student at Marple. He enjoyed it so much that he began working there full-time after he graduated. At night, Nick works as a bartender. “I just love talking to people,” said Nick. “Bartending is the perfect job for me.” He even has a signature cocktail, the Scooby Snack.

Alexandra is a determined, kind and hardworking senior at MNHS who recently committed to the University of Delaware in the fall. Education is her top priority and she works hard to maintain a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. An accomplished springboard diver, Alexandra is captain of MNHS’s dive team and dives year-round with the USA and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Dive teams.

Whether it’s in the classroom, the weight room or on the diving board, Alexandra puts the work in.

It’s been an exciting diving season for Alexandra as she broke the Delaware County record three times and her own record five times. Diving since the age of seven, she first got into the sport when she was on the swim and dive team for the Rose Tree Woods Swim Club. "I love the adrenaline that I get from the sport of diving,” she said. “It’s so scary to try new dives, but once you do, it's a great feeling of accomplishment.” Over the years she has received numerous awards and accolades for

diving and has been a state champion, district champion and four-time Central League champion. No doubt she will have continued success as a student and as a Division 1 diver at the University of Delaware next year!

Rounding out the family and the one who the kids say is actually Chanda’s favorite is their twelve-year-old Weimaraner named Zeke. “After our first dog, Harley, passed away, Evangelo said ‘no more dogs!’” explained Chanda. But when Chanda found a breeder who had a litter from Harley’s relatives, the family couldn’t say no to Zeke, who is Harley’s great-nephew.

The Pastris family has lived in Broomall for the past 15 years.

After living in Exton for several years, they felt it was time to move back to the area, to be closer to family and to the city.

They found the perfect house in what they said is a peaceful neighborhood with helpful and friendly neighbors. They’re not far from Evangelo’s family who all still live in the area, and they’re right down the road from St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church, where they’re proud members. “We feel so blessed to have grown up in this community and now raise our children here,” said Chanda. “There really is no place like Marple!”

The April Student of the Month is Anthony (“AJ”) Marozzi, a Senior at Cardinal O’Hara High School (COHS).

AJ received a Certificate of Achievement to recognize how he demonstrates Excellence in Service to many communities.

Along with his academic classes at COHS, AJ attends the Delaware County Vocational Technical School for Building Trades. AJ hopes to continue his education in construction, although he’s not sure whether it will be in plumbing, HVAC or a different construction specialty that he would like to continue to learn about and apprentice in after graduation.

As one of the most ardent COHS Sports enthusiasts, AJ tries to attend every home game — no matter the sport — and even some away games, to cheer on and encourage his fellow students. That is one thing that AJ makes a point of in EVERYTHING he does: He’s always there for his friends, family, fellow students and also those with special needs, no matter what.

AJ had a difficult childhood, requiring a bone marrow transplant (from his brother), and many weeks and months spent in Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

During AJ's battle, he kept his positive outlook, sense

of humor and the determination to “stay strong.” That’s why his friends nicknamed him “Mighty Marozzi.”

At times during AJ’s severe childhood illness, his parents weren’t sure if his battle would end happily. Once AJ was a bit healthier, he was granted a wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation: a trip to swim with the dolphins in the Bahamas. Since then, AJ and his family have been involved with the foundation, to give back and help with fundraising. In 2021, the 5th Annual Wish with Marozzi fundraiser was held.

AJ is an exceptional young man who spreads joy to everyone he meets. He also volunteers with the COHS Community Service Corps, Danny Hammond Dance Marathon (DHDM) and various DHDM charity events. AJ feels it’s very important that he gives back because he knows he has been given so much to be thankful for.

AJ, your Marple Newtown Friends & Neighbors congratulate you on this award and for turning your childhood health struggles into something wonderful and beneficial to others. We wish you well in the years to come and in all your future endeavors! M

Sometimes the therapist/ counselor suggests different ways to eliminate or deal with stress that you may not have thought about. College while working for E&J Tree Experts, where Mike considered the head tree surgeon, Howard Foulk, a mentor.

During the early 1980s, Mike was looking to start his own business and found a great place to set up shop in Broomall. With just a single pickup truck, Mike started what was first known as Brad's Incredible Tree Experts. Back then, Mike was known as “Brad,” and he was able to build a strong customer base just by word of mouth. He had recently married his wife Kathleen, and she handled the business side of things while Mike was out on jobs. Kathleen and Mike raised their two daughters here in Broomall, both of whom graduated from Cardinal O’Hara High School. Their oldest daughter Elana is now a Certified Arborist and the Office Manager for Bradley Tree Experts.

And their daughter Mellissa is a Respiratory Therapist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. With Elana now serving in the role her mother once had, Mike said Kathleen now considers herself the retired President of the company and happily helps take care of her three-year-old granddaughter, Adrienne.

For years, Mike’s younger brother Bernie also worked alongside him. Sadly, Bernie passed away last year. But now, lucky for Mike, Bernie’s son Jonathan, who grew up in the business and eventually became a Certified Arborist, is working for Bradley Tree Experts.

Longtime customers appreciate the personal touch they get with a small, family owned business. “They know that when they call, they'll get to talk to Elana,” he said. “And when they hire us for tree work, they know I’ll be the one coming out to the property to talk to them about the project.” Another perk to having his daughter work with him? “She keeps me in line,” he said jokingly. “Because of Elana, I always know where to be and to be there on time!”

Then come fall, he takes the boat out in Avalon, to catch striped bass. “I love the outdoors,” said Mike. “When I’m not working, I’m doing something outside like riding a motorcycle or spending time in the mountains.”

Modern Hi-Tech Methods vs. Proven Troubleshooting Methods and Expertise

T

hings are not always as they seem. Imagine a new custom-built home with all the amenities. The home looked exceptional, but the cold draft that ran down the steps from the second floor and throughout the home was preventing the homeowners from living comfortably in their beautiful new home.

To identify the source of the draft, the contractor used an infrared camera to do a full thermal imaging of the home. That scan showed no draft source, so the home underwent a second full thermal imaging scan by a PA state agency’s thermal imaging crew. They also used their Blower Door airflow testing equipment, but came up with no clear answer for the draft. And both thermal scans showed complete insulation “enveloping” at the perimeter.

The homeowner then called a weatherproofing estimator, to ask what additional diagnostic tools were available beyond what had already been done. The homeowner said that after two years and several deeper examinations, the contractor and the state agency’s crew had come to the conclusion that there was no heat loss at the expected spots in the walls, windows or ceilings.

Most weatherization projects are like a good mystery book. If the rain gutters fail, the foundation grading is poor or the basement windows and/or walls are leaking, there will be poor air quality in certain areas of the home. The answer to the mystery isn’t always “the usual suspects” — French drains, stucco walls

and ineffective dehumidifiers. The roofing, siding, windows, insulation, venting, water seepage and heat loss must be evaluated for possible inefficiencies.

The weatherproofing estimator’s many years of experience with homes of every shape and size helped him identify that the source of the draft was in the “bonus room” above the garage. That room, which was next to the top of the stairs on the second floor, had a barn/Dutch-style roof line and a double-walled framed design, which meant that insulation could be omitted. When the lower part of the bonus room’s walls were cut open, there was NO insulation, but the storage space behind the walls had blocked the heat loss from showing on both infrared imaging scans.

That same weatherproofing estimator discovered what was causing water marks on the walls of another homeowner’s dining room, which had been a first-floor addition 10 years prior. The cause of the water marks had originally been misdiagnosed by an Energy Audit crew, at considerable expense to the homeowner. Although there was some insulation, the exterior soffit vents near the sliding door from the dining room to a patio created a cold corner in the room. The problem turned out to be the fact that there was no kitchen exhaust fan. This was discovered not by using thermal or other hi-tech diagnostic equipment but through the simple and proven troubleshooting methods of a weatherproofing estimator with many years of experience. The 1950s Cold War Came to Delco Written by Doug Humes

W

orld War II ended in August of 1945, but the “Cold War” essentially began at the same time. The struggle between democratic capitalism and authoritarian communism lasted for most of the 20th century. The possibility of an exchange of nuclear weapons was very real in the 1950’s, and so Civil Defense became the watchword. To protect likely military and civilian targets, we installed missile bases surrounding our cities. Philadelphia, then the 3rd largest city in the country, was one of the protected cities, with a dozen Nike missile bases ringing the city, including Site PH-75 right off of West Chester Pike in Edgmont.

The Edgmont base was completed in 1955. Each site had three parts: a radar system to detect incoming aircraft and direct the outgoing missiles; with 1- 3 underground “magazines”, each with four launchers; and an area for personnel - headquarters, barracks, mess, recreation hall and motor pool. The base was

staffed by 109 soldiers, initially Regular Army but later PA National Guard units. The initial missile was a Nike (Greek Goddess of Victory) Ajax, with a 25 mile range that could be fired at incoming bombers. At least one launcher was on constant alert.

While anti-war sentiment grew in the 1960’s, it came earlier to Edgmont in 1958 when a group of 50 young activists held a silent vigil for peace at the entrance to the base that lasted several days.

Intercontinental ballistic missiles spelled the end to the Nike bases. The new missiles traveled too quickly to be intercepted by the Nikes, designed for slower flying bombers. The Nike bases were all closed down, including Edgmont in September 1968. The site continues to be used as a U.S. ArmyReserve Center. Cold War traces remain there, as well as in the Don Guanella woods, which once hosted an anti-aircraft battery.

Over the next few years, as missiles improved in range and power, the new generation – Hercules – were installed in area sites. While the Ajax was a conventional warhead, the Hercules missiles were nuclear.

The Importance of a Sewer Inspection

I

f your home connects to the public sewer system, a sewer inspection can save your home and sanity, as well as money.

Sewers are indeed “out of sight, out of mind,” but that doesn’t mean they should be neglected. Because many homeowners don’t know much about their sewer lateral, or how to tell if there are problems with it, they often overlook it. Neglecting it can negatively affect your pockets and your property.

Offset Pipes: An offset is where two sections of pipe meet but do not line up correctly.

Even some home inspectors overlook a sewer lateral because it’s underground. What’s even worse is that the majority of inspectors don’t have the correct specialized equipment to do a proper sewer inspection. Certified plumbers use specialized waterproof video camera snakes that are pushed through sewer lateral piping, to conduct several visual inspections.

Cracking: To avoid further damage, leaks outside of the sewer pipe can lead to settlement of the line, so they should be repaired right away.

Using this new technology makes a difference: Professional sewer inspections are not as difficult as they used to be. You no longer have to dig up your yard to find problems. In fact, plumbers can repair/replace the sewer lateral without damaging your beautiful yard and landscaping.

Some Common Problems Found in Sewer Lines Buildup of Grease: Garbage disposals can cause a grease buildup, which, along with other substances, will cause blockages.

Tree Roots: Roots can not only offset a pipe, they can also crush it. Root intrusion is more common in older piping.

Low Areas: When debris gathers in the low area of your sewer pipe, it disrupts the flow.

Pipe Collapse: Although a pipe collapse is uncommon, it can happen due to any of the issues above, and in almost every case, your line will need to be replaced.

By having a proper camera sewer inspection, you will learn about unknown problems that could or would lead to more serious repairs. By eliminating the guesswork, plumbers will discover potential problems before they cause severe damage.

The sewer lateral is an important part of your home, so do your “homework” before moving forward. A sewer lateral inspection should be done by a certified sewer inspection contractor because they will have the correct specialized equipment to inspect it properly. M

O

ne of the most recognizable buildings along West Chester Pike in Broomall is the DANJOLELL Memorial Home. But did you know that the iconic octagonal building is also home to the largest private collection of Norman Rockwell memorabilia in the United States?

The Norman Rockwell Museum on the lower level was established by Robert L. D’Anjolell, Sr. Many years ago, Bob began collecting Norman Rockwell memorabilia – everything from plates and drawings to figurines and bound copies of The Saturday Evening Post, which made Rockwell famous.

Robert, Sr., has long been a fan of Norman Rockwell’s art, his work ethic and his iconic depictions of Americana. Rockwell was fiercely determined to become a successful artist and, at the age of 14, enrolled in art classes. By age 16, he had left high school to study under influential artists, Thomas Fogarty and George Bridgman, and shortly thereafter, was named the Art Director of Boys’ Life, the official publication of the Boy Scouts of America.

Today, the entire lower level of the funeral home serves not only as a tribute to Rock-well and his art, but also as a welcome distraction for grieving families. When a family loses a loved one and needs to make funeral arrangements,the family and a funeral director use a private room on the comforting lower level to discuss private matters such as viewing and funeral arrangements and choosing a casket or an urn as a final resting place. They also have rooms for families to relax and a children’s area to keep the kids occupied.

As visitors walk down the center staircase, they cannot help but see the amazing display of Norman Rockwell pieces in the foyer area. But that is just the beginning. Every room on this spacious level is filled with Rockwell’s work. There is even a large vestibule area named The Rockwell Museum, with hundreds of plates on display in lighted glass cabinets.

By the time Rockwell was 22 years old, he painted his first cover for The Saturday Evening Post. Over the next 47 years, Norman Rockwell painted over 300 of the magazine’s covers.

His most famous covers include “Freedom From Want,” the third of the “Four Freedoms” series that became a symbol of family togetherness, peace, and plenty; “Rosie the Riveter,” which served as a tribute to the strength and contributions of women during World War II; and “The Problem We All Live With,” which addressed the Civil Rights Movement and the beginning of desegregation in our schools.

In 1969, Rockwell placed his works in the custodianship of the Old Corner House Stockbridge Historical Society, later to become Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The museum is home to 998 original paintings and drawings as well as Rockwell’s art materials, his library, furnishings and personal items.

Norman Rockwell was a true entrepreneur from humble means, which is one of the reasons why Robert D’Anjolell, Sr., is an avid collector of Rockwell’s artwork. Robert, Sr., also came from a modest background, and at an early age, saved his money and opened his first funeral home in 1963, in Philadelphia’s Overbrook section. Since then, he has worked hard to achieve his dreams and now owns and manages six funeral homes in Delaware and Chester Counties.

Batter Up! It’s Baseball Season in Marple

S

pring is here, and it’s not just for cleaning, vacationing and relaxing. It’s also for baseball! Home to two little league organizations, Marple Township Little League (MTLL) and South Marple Little League (SMLL), Marple offers children ages 4-12 the opportunity to learn life lessons, make new friends and develop a love of the game.

Run by dedicated volunteers and chartered members of Little League Baseball, these two leagues provide a healthy environment to play ball and to build self-confidence and self-esteem.

Last season the MTLL also installed brand new turf batting cages at the Marple complex, allowing players more opportunities to improve their swing and technique. Their snack bar got an upgrade too. After a fire damaged the facility, Brian said local businesses and community members stepped in and remodeled the snack bar at no cost to the league.

“This community is incredible,” said Brian, who is serving his third year as president. “It’s such a tight-knit Little League and we all support each other. Everyone involved puts a lot of dedication and time into making it a great season. The reward is getting to see all the players out on the field having fun.”

MTLL was founded in 1951 and serves boys and girls of the Marple Newtown area. Its goal is to encourage participation, develop character and discipline and promote teamwork. “We provide quality instruction in developing baseball skills while also fostering a love of the game,” said longtime board member Mike Noonan.

MTLL sponsors divisions from tee-ball to the more competitive majors and minors divisions as well as tournament teams. The 2022 season kicked off on April 2 with its annual opening day parade. “It was really special this year because for the past two years we were unable to have the parade due to the pandemic,” explained MTLL President Brian McCollum. “It was so great to see all of our players and families get to celebrate this year. It really gets everyone excited for the upcoming season.”

This year they’ll be combining the two milestones into one big celebration.

Looking ahead, MTLL is looking to add a Challenger division next year, which will allow players of all abilities to play baseball, regardless of any limitations. “We’re looking forward to adding a Challenger baseball team for the 2023 Spring season,” said Mike, who is spearheading this initiative. “It will allow the players to enjoy athletic and social activity, strengthen their self-esteem and give them an opportunity to develop a sense of teamwork!”

Like MTLL, SMLL also relies heavily on volunteers, from coaching to running the snack bar. “We are so lucky to have a dedicated group of parents who take pride in maintaining the fields and running the snack bar,” Steve said. “Many of the generous Marple residents who volunteer and financially contribute to ensure that the league is so special are the ones who have fond memories of their own time as players.”

South Marple Little League is just down the road from MTLL, which serves children who attend St. Pius X, Loomis Elementary, Paxon Hollow Middle School, and St. Francis of Assisi. Offering tee-ball, minor and major competitive baseball and softball teams, as well as tournament teams, SMLL is an ideal environment for players to excel and for families to enjoy their time at the fields. "Our families often say how much they enjoy playing here because of the neighborhood feel. It's easy for them to walk or ride their bikes to the complex,” said SMLL President Steve Murray. “It's a place that families and former players keep coming back to visit long after their days of playing at South Marple.”

SMLL also kicked off their season on April 2nd with their annual parade from Lawrence Park Shopping Center to the baseball fields located behind Loomis Elementary School.

“Opening day is always really special,” said Steve. “It’s wonderful to see everyone come out and cheer for the players as they walk through the neighborhood.”

Aside from the sheer excitement of returning to baseball, the 2022 season marks the 65th year of the league, and plans to celebrate are in the works. At the end of each season, the league

Sharing Special Holiday Recipes: Celebrating Easter and Passover Written by Holly Stupak

ach year followers of Christian faiths close out Lent by attending church services and gathering with friends and family for spring-inspired celebrations. There are many classic Easter traditions you can incorporate this year on April 17th.

Some traditions like visiting the Easter bunny or attending an Easter egg hunt may already be a part of your holiday plans, but perhaps this is the year you’d like to try a new tradition or even a new recipe. However you choose to honor Easter this year, traditions are important because they connect us with our past.

Her family’s Easter dinner always includes ham, candied sweet potatoes and bunny cake. “The bunny cake recipe is now included in a family cookbook that my sister made for our family 18 years ago after my grandmother passed away,” Jennifer explained. “My sister wanted to record our family recipes as a keepsake and remembrance of my grandmother.”

For Broomall resident Jennifer Noll, making a delicious bunny cake is a tradition she looks forward to every Easter. This Easter tradition began when she was four years old and continues to this day. It started with her Aunt Marie making the cake and continuing to make it every Easter while she and her cousins were growing

Bunny Cake

Red Velvet Cake Ingredients • 1 tsp salt • 2 eggs • 1 tsp vanilla • ½ cup butter • 1 cup buttermilk • 1½ cups sugar • 2 cups flour • 2 Tbsp cocoa

• 1½ tsp baking soda • 1 Tbsp vinegar • 1 oz red food coloring

Directions Grease and flour 8-inch pans.

Cream shortening, sugar and eggs.

Stir the cocoa and coloring together to make a paste. Add to the creamed mixture.

Mix salt and vanilla in milk. Add alternately with flour.

Mix baking soda with vinegar. STIR IN. DO NOT BEAT AFTER VINEGAR AND SODA HAVE BEEN ADDED. Bake at 350º for 40 minutes.

Red Velvet Icing Ingredients • 5 Tbsp flour • 1 cup sugar • 1 cup milk • 1 tsp vanilla • 1 cup butter Directions In a double boiler, mix flour and milk. Boil the mixture until thick then let cool to room temperature.

Beat butter and sugar. Add vanilla. Beat until creamy. Add cooled flour and milk mixture and beat until thick and creamy.

To make cake into a bunny: Turn one cooled cake layer upside down. Mark the center of cake with toothpick. Measure about 2″ in from two sides of cake lining up the toothpicks. Using the tip of a sharp knife, lightly draw a 2″ wide x 6″ long oval, football-shaped, to make the ears. Cut with a serrated knife. The middle part of the layer will be the “bow tie.” Place whole cake layer in center of large tray.

Place ears and bow tie, rounded side up. Frost entire surface and sides of cake, connecting the pieces together with frosting.

Sprinkle with coconut. Cut licorice pieces for mouth and whiskers. Cut jelly beans in half for eyes, nose and bow tie.

Serves 8.

Many neighbors in our community are also getting ready to celebrate Passover, which begins on April 15th and ends on April 23rd this year. Also known as Pesach, it commemorates the liberation of the Hebrew slaves from Egypt. On the first two nights of Passover, a special family meal called the seder is held. During Passover, no leavened food (called chametz) is eaten, and on the first two and last two days of Passover, no work is permitted, as these four days are considered sacred. At the seder, foods of symbolic significance are served and prayers and traditional recitations are performed.

Rabbi Janine Jankovitz, who serves as the rabbi at Congregation Beth El Ner Tamid here in Broomall, said Passover is a celebration of new life and new beginnings. “This year’s celebration of Passover will be even more special,” said Rabbi Jankovitz. “For many people, it’s been two years since they were able to have an in-person seder with friends and family. Now that many people can gather safely, this year will be really special.” Typically Congregation Beth El Ner Tamid hosts a community seder dinner on the second night of Passover, but for the past two years, they were held virtually. “We hope to be able to celebrate in person this year,” she said. “It’s always lovely when our community can celebrate together.”

Passover Cherry t Walnut Mandelbro

Ingredients • 1 cup sugar

• 1 pinch Kosher Salt • 1 tsp baking powder • 1 Tbsp potato starch • 11/3 cup cake meal • 3 eggs • 2 tsp vanilla • 2/3 cup peanut, vegetable or cottonseed oil • 1½ cup chopped walnuts • 1 16 oz jar of maraschino cherries, destemmed, drained, rinsed and halved

Passover Cherry Walnut Mandelbrot

• Cinnamon and sugar for topping

Broomall resident Scott Noye is sharing his special recipe for Passover, Cherry Walnut Mandelbrot. As the owner of Chef Dad’s Table, Scott spends a lot of time in the kitchen, teaching children and young adults how to cook and enjoy delicious food together.

Similar to biscotti, mandelbrot is a twice-baked crunchy cookie, and it’s sure to become your go-to Passover treat.

Directions Combine sugar, salt, baking powder, potato starch, and cake meal in a bowl. Beat eggs, vanilla, and oil together in another bowl. Add dry ingredients to wet mixture, half at a time. Mix until almost all incorporated. Add in walnuts and cherries. Mix until incorporated. The dough will be sticky.

Cover the dough and let it sit at room temperature for 30 mins.

Preheat the oven to 375º for 15 mins. before baking.

Grease cookie sheet. With wet hands, divide dough into 3 parts.

Shape each part into a log/loaf. Smooth top and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Pat cinnamon and sugar lightly onto loaves.

Bake in a preheated 375º oven for approx. 25 mins.

Cool for 15 mins. then slice into portions. (Scott uses ½ - ¾" slices).

Lay slices on their side and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon and sugar. Bake for 10 -15 mins. more or until golden brown. The longer you bake it, the crisper and drier it will become.

Enjoy!
