It has to be a good month when the first day of February kicks off as National Get Up Day, followed by Groundhog Day on Feb. 2nd.

But then expecting Feb. 3rd to follow, there is that somewhat sad National Missing Persons Day, which may suggest that strange celebration of Groundhog Day for some is happening again, and again.

February has some strange celebrations but so does every day of the year, with multiple “National Days” as I wrote about last month. Easily discovered on Internet calendars, I wrote that such days of trivial honor should include a National Bringing People Together Day. I’m grateful for all who agreed, but then Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine, in print and online at www.MarpleMag.com, is Bringing People Together every day, thanks to our advertising Sponsors whose support makes our hometown magazine possible.

Tree Maintenance – When and How?

T

rees make a true statement when placed at key areas around the home. The question many homeowners ask — especially if they’ve inherited a yard with many and various types of trees — is when is it time to perform tree maintenance, and what are specific ways to maintain particular types of trees? To get those answers, first ask yourself these basic questions: • Do the trees on my property present broken limbs that could possibly be dead or diseased?

• Do my trees encroach on my house, on my neighbor’s property or house, on power lines, or on sidewalk areas?

• Are my trees misshapen from overgrowth?

• Do my trees reduce the aesthetic value of my property?

If the answers to these questions are mostly yes, it is most certainly time for the most common form of tree maintenance: tree pruning. Put simply, tree pruning is selectively removing branches from a tree to improve its structure and promote overall healthy new growth. Thinning out a tree’s canopy (the branches and leaves at its top) will let light and air circulate in and around its branches, which then allows for increased foliage and a decreased chance of disease. As trees age, they may grow suckers (more branches at their trunk base or above). Most suckers should be removed because they can weaken wood and take nutrients from the main tree. Helping each tree establish one main trunk or dominant stem is key to the growth process, to ensure the tree is able to withstand winter storms and high winds.

When is the best time to prune most trees?

The answer is simple: Winter, or more precisely, mid to late winter. That means right now!

Trees that benefit the most from winter pruning are evergreens, shade trees like oaks and maples, and most shrubs.

Why is winter the best time for pruning?

In winter, trees are less susceptible to disease and insect infestation because they are dormant. In worst case scenarios, a tree may have to come down. Winter is the optimal time to get that service completed because if a service provider requires access to a grassy area to complete the job, turf damage will be minimal when temperatures are low or the ground is frozen. O

n November 11, 1915 (Armistice Day then; Veterans Day now), Henry Eugene Vickers was born at his family’s farmhouse in Oakmont, PA. He was the youngest of seven children born to Harry and Laura Vickers.

When Eugene (the name his parents and siblings preferred for him) was a small boy, the family built and moved to a new home on Ellis and Darby Roads in Havertown.

Eugene attended Oakmont Elementary.

In 1933, he graduated from Haverford High School, where he ran track and hurdles. He then attended Wheaton

College in Illinois, where soccer was his sport, and History was his major.

Before attending Wheaton College in Illinois, and after he graduated from Wheaton in 1938, he attended Philadelphia School of the Bible (currently Cairn University). After World War II, Eugene was employed at the college for almost 45 years. He served in several different positions: Director of Admissions, Director of Alumni, Soccer Coach, and in his semi-retirement years, Director of Evening School. He greatly enjoyed interacting with the students and attending their sporting and social

events. Many of those students are still in contact with him today. As you read on, you’ll understand why. But first, let’s return to the WWII years.

Eugene met the love of his life, Betty Dunn, when they were children and both attended Grace Chapel of Havertown.

They got married at that church in October 1941. Eugene’s parents were charter members of Grace Chapel, and Eugene served there in several capacities including Youth Director and Sunday School Superintendent. Grace Chapel is still his beloved church today.

Eugene and Betty had been married only two months when Pearl Harbor was attacked in December 1941, and the United States entered WWII. Eugene enlisted and left his bride Betty so he could go serve his country. He entered the Navy as a Lieutenant, and was sent to Harvard for training required to serve as a Communications Officer. He was also assigned to serve as Chaplain when he arrived on the USS Ganymede AK-104, a troop ship that was part of General MacArthur’s fleet.

He later served as a Signal Officer on the USS Panamint AGC-13, performing assaults, capturing Okinawa and Le Shima Islands, and fighting in the battles of Iwo Jima and New Guiana. Their ship was under heavy attack from Japanese suicide bombers (Kamikazes), and torpedoes from enemy submarines, at one point for 35 straight days! Eugene’s ship was finally ordered to go ashore, to see if there were survivors from the devastating aftermath of the US atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that finally ended the war. The USS Panamint also escorted General MacArthur’s Second in Command to Alaska, to verify that the Japanese were surrendering and complying with the peace agreement there.

When someone asked Eugene if his many near-death experiences caused him to panic, without hesitation he promptly answered, “It really didn’t disturb me that much because my confidence was in the Lord.”

Eugene was a hands-on Dad, spending time with his girls, always eating family dinner together, playing softball on the lawn, helping with homework, reading Bible stories and praying with them before tucking them in at night. Through his example, he taught his daughters that “The Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations” (Psalm 100:5).

Eugene has lived for 67 years in that same green Cape Cod where he and Betty raised their girls. He greatly misses his dear wife of 66 years since she went to Heaven almost 15 years ago. His large extended family is still growing: He has 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

In 1946, Eugene returned to the loving arms of his wife Betty and their then3-year-old daughter Betty Jean. They all settled into a modest home in Oakmont, where two more daughters, Barbara and then Brenda, soon filled the house. In 1955, the Vickers family moved to a brand-new Cape Cod-style home in Newtown Square. Theirs was the first home on an unpaved, desolate street named Overbrook Drive, close to Delaware County Christian School, which Eugene and Betty and several other families had helped found in 1950 and which the Vickers girls would attend. Shortly after moving into their new home, Eugene and Betty welcomed their fourth daughter, Beverly, into the family.

Every centenarian has seen a mind-boggling amount of social and technological change, and has probably experienced many of life’s “ups and downs.” Eugene, whom we Marple Friends & Neighbors readers have come to admire and respectfully refer to as “Mr. Vickers,” has a perspective on life that’s well worth hearing about. When asked to tell us about one of the most fulfilling parts of his life, he said: “Many facets of my life were very fulfilling: Serving my country, marrying my sweetheart, raising four wonderful daughters, and last but most importantly, imparting the Biblical philosophy that has been a constant in my long life: ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own continued on page 12

Eugene Vickers’ Family December 2016 (7 babies since!)

After a fulfilling life of so much service to others, Mr. Vickers celebrated his 106th birthday this past November 11th, which happens to be the day that our country celebrates Veterans Day each year; how appropriate! Two years ago, Mr. Vickers celebrated his 104th birthday by riding with his family in a luxury bus to Washington, DC, where they attended a ceremony to honor him.

At that time, Mr. Vickers was presented with a plaque that was placed inside the WWII Museum.

We ended our chat with Mr. Vickers by asking what advice he’d give young people who have their whole lives ahead of them. He eagerly shared words that have worked well for him his entire life: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).

The February Toscana Student of the Month is Ethan Staurowsky, a Senior at Marple Newtown High School.

Ethan received a Certificate of Achievement and a Gift Certificate from Toscana Modern Italian Steakhouse, our Sponsor of this program.

Ethan is a true sports enthusiast, and track has always been his sport. Since he was first introduced to running track and field in middle school, Ethan has loved being on the team. Whether it’s cross country, indoor track, hurdles, long jumps, sprints, fall, winter or spring track, you know you can find Ethan giving it his all. And now, Ethan is also one of the team captains too!

Academically, Ethan is a member of the National Honor Society, and takes his school classes as seriously as he does track. He’s hoping to go to Ursinus College in the fall, and use his track and field talents there at the college level. He is looking to major in Applied Economics in Ursinus College’s excellent business department.

However, one thing that Ethan is best known for is the work that he does every year on Marple Newtown’s 4th of July Committee and Parade. Since he was a young boy, Ethan would accompany his mom to the committee meetings and offer to help in any way he could.

After high school she went on to the University of Rochester where she earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Economics. Her professional interests led her more towards marketing, and for 15 years she worked in pharmaceutical research. In her role as a market researcher, she especially liked speaking with members of focus groups to make sure their voices were heard.

Lindsey also moved around a bit after college and eventually landed in Chester County. “I’ve lived in a few places like Arizona and New Jersey and I found I just love the landscape out here in Pennsylvania,” said Lindsey. “It’s a great community full of wonderful people, too.“ As mom to two teenage children, Lindsey has enjoyed being active in their schools, whether it was coaching field hockey or volunteering with her daughter’s Girl Scout troop.

When the chance came up in 2018 to purchase Oasis Senior Advisors Mainline and to serve the people in her community and the surrounding areas, Lindsey said she jumped at the opportunity. “This opportunity to start my own company fell into my lap,” explained Lindsey. “I knew it would be a way to make a positive impact in my community. It’s been so rewarding to work directly with seniors and their families and to be their guide in what often is a time of crisis.” Lindsey said she was able to draw on many of her past experiences in market research, when she had listened to and gathered information from healthcare professionals, caregivers and patients.

here are plenty of ways to help animals in shelters and rescues awaiting adoption. Some are as simple as a click to share social media posts, or making “no-sew” fleece blankets. VOLUNTEER: Volunteer at an animal shelter and interact with the animals in a “hands on,” personal way. You’ll find that it’s extremely rewarding to both you and the sheltered animals. Walk the dogs, pet the cats, talk to them and help to socialize them. These animals may be caged for many hours and may be depressed or bored. As a result, they may exhibit behaviors that hurt their chances of getting adopted.

Cats may swat when picked up and held. Dogs may explode with pent-up energy. This may result in prospective adopters moving down the row to the next cage. The more cats and dogs are exposed to people and pleasant activities, the better their chances of “showing well” and getting adopted.

FOSTER: Open your heart and home to offer a shelter animal a cage-free experience. Cats and dogs in foster care are usually more relaxed, less stressed and better socialized, which results in them having a better chance of being adopted into a forever home. There are benefits to you and your resident pet as well.

Your resident pet may like the company and learn more social skills, and you will rest easier knowing you’ve made a huge difference in a foster pet’s life. M

The Power of Habit

I

f you’re like many people, you may have made a New Year’s resolution to start working out or lose weight in 2022.

Maybe you wanted to get stronger, improve your endurance or just feel better and have more energy. You may also be one of 90% of those who abandon their resolutions within a few weeks, or maybe you didn’t even start! Instead of beating yourself up over it, remember that willpower alone cannot help you achieve your goal.

Success is about learning new skills and building habits, which in turn will also boost your willpower. Imagine treating your workout the same way you do your morning coffee. What if it was just a given? For people who work out regularly, it is.

That’s the power of habit.

Strategy #3: Plan Ahead Planning ahead as much as possible can help keep the "extras" from derailing your session. For example, if you have a predawn class planned, set your clothes out, and fill your water bottle the night before. If you plan to exercise on your way home from work, pack your gym bag the night before and set it by the door so you can simply grab it and go in the morning.

If you’re not seeing success right away, don’t beat yourself up and be patient. Despite what you may have heard, it actually takes more than 21 days to build a habit. It’s simply a matter of testing various strategies to find the ones that work best for you. M

The strategies below may help you in making your workout just part of your day. Start with one that feels right, and keep in mind it takes some trial and error to determine what works for you. Just like reaching any new goal, habit development is a skill that takes patience and practice.

Strategy #1: Habit Stacking This means attaching a new habit to an existing one. For example, if you already drink coffee every morning, you could do a few sun salutations while your coffee is brewing. If you run the same errand each week, you could start scheduling a workout class before or after that errand.

Strategy #2: Schedule Your Workout By putting your workout on the calendar the same way you would a meeting or appointment, you’ve eliminated the guesswork. You don’t have to think about when you’re going to squeeze it in — or risk letting another priority get in the way — because it’s already planned and on your calendar.

W

hile the Pennsylvania Railroad branch did not start until 1894, Marple had a very active railroad prior to the Civil War: the Underground Railroad. When slaves escaped servitude in the South, they followed the “drinking gourd” – the Big Dipper, largely traveling at night and hiding out during the day in homes and barns. They were led by local “conductors” who knew the safe houses, as well as unsympathetic neighbors to be avoided.

In Marple, local tanner James Lewis was drawn into the underground activities in 1837 by a young boarder in his home, James T. Dannaker. Lewis was from the founding family of Newtown, the Quaker Lewises, who were strongly opposed to slavery. But many in the neighborhood thought that the abolitionists were troublemakers. Lewis invited abolitionist attorney Thomas Earle to speak in Marple at the local public schoolhouse, the community gathering spot.

When Earle arrived, a gang of 20 rough opponents were an intimidating presence. Earle did not want to stir up trouble, so he asked that a vote be taken about whether to proceed.

The vote was almost unanimous, and he spoke for nearly two hours. He reviewed the views of the Founding Fathers in opposition to slavery, the evils of a lifetime of enslaved toil and of families being separated on an auction block. When he was done, many of the rough crowd “who came to scoff remained to pray.”

Lewis’ home on Malin Road (still standing today) was convenient to the West Chester Turnpike, and became a safe “station,” sheltering escapees until a way could be found to move them to the next stop. Lewis routinely traveled the countryside, picking up hides to take back to his tannery and then going out again to deliver the finished goods, or take them to Philadelphia for sale. Lewis and Dannaker were never caught, and both survived to an old age. Thomas Earle ran for U.S. Vice-President on the Liberty Party ticket with James Birney in 1840. Although they were defeated, they helped plant the seeds of the Republican Party that swept into office in 1860 under Abraham Lincoln. After the Civil War, the Underground Railroad became unnecessary.

o determine if your home is as safe as it could be during the cold winter months, here are some things to check regularly and to always keep in mind, both inside and out.

Outside After the holiday lights are taken down and put away for next season, what needs to be done now in order to keep things safe, neat and tidy for the rest of winter? While you make a visual inspection of your home’s interior and exterior, keep in mind the following: • Make sure all power outlets have the proper weatherproof covers in place.

• Are your wall lights secured properly with no broken glass or pieces?

• Look at the power cables and meter box, to verify that everything is attached properly and the wiring is in place without any cracks or broken coverings.

• Check the plugs and cords on portable electric heaters, to make sure they are not broken or cracked. (This includes ceramic, strip element and fluid-filled units.)

• Make sure your fireplace ash pit is cleaned out and your chimney flue is clean.

• Never run extension cords under carpeting — even for only an hour!

• Are your power/surge strips in proper working order? Make sure they are not overloaded, especially if a portable heater is using one of the plugs.

• Never leave or forget about candles that are burning. They can be especially dangerous if left unattended.

• If you have toddlers, are all safety gates and cabinet locks in place?

Spread Heart Health Awareness This Month

ebruary is often considered the month of love when we send our significant others or family members heartthemed cards and heart-shaped chocolates. This month we can also give another gift to our loved ones — taking care of our hearts.

Back in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson was among the millions of people in the United States to suffer a heart attack.

That year, he declared the first American Heart Month to tackle heart disease in the United States. Every February since then has been designated as National Heart Month, a time to spread heart health awareness and encourage heart-healthy lifestyles. From neonatal patients to adults who have been battling congenital heart disease for decades, it’s a month to raise awareness for conditions that affect every heart.

Statistics about heart disease can be alarming, but there is no need to panic. Research shows that lifestyle changes can greatly reduce your risk. Whether it’s preparing heart-healthy meals and eating healthier, working out or quitting smoking, you can make everyday changes to improve your overall heart health. A good place to find a list of resources and partnerships is on the American Heart Association’s website (www.Heart.org). They have plenty of tools to help you learn how to make healthy changes.

American Heart Month is also the perfect time to learn more about Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) in children and to spread awareness about it to your family and friends. CHD is a term used to describe many different structural problems that affect the heart and is one of the most common birth defects, affecting 1 in 120 babies born in the United States each year.

The most common types of CHDs are ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, tetralogy of fallot, single ventricle defect, pulmonary valve stenosis, patent ductus arteriosus, transposition of the great arteries, and aortic valve stenosis. Of the many babies born with CHD, many will require intervention, such as surgery, during their first year of life.

Local mom Michelle McDowell understands firsthand what it is like to have a child with CHD. Her daughter Gabrielle was born in 2008 with two types of heart defects: a ventricular septal defect and a tetralogy of fallot.

Gabrielle underwent surgery at just five days old to repair a hole in the wall between the two lower ventricles. By age four, she had three additional surgeries and she’s had eleven cardiac catheterizations, a procedure that allows doctors to see how blood is flowing through the heart chambers and arteries.

During this procedure, the doctor uses special tools to fix the heart defect.

For Michelle, those early years of handling Gabrielle's numerous cardiac appointments and surgeries was a very emotional time. “It was a difficult time because when Gabrielle was a newborn, I wasn’t even able to hold her,” explained Michelle.

“And when she was young, I felt isolated because as a young mom I didn’t have a lot of friends who had children yet, let alone one who had special needs.”

ebruary may be filled with long nights and frigid temperatures, but it also overflows with warmth and love as we celebrate Valentine’s Day. February 14th is the second-largest card-giving holiday — a time to express our love and appreciation for the special people in our lives. For many married couples, it’s a time to reconnect and remember the reasons why they said “I do.”

Maintaining long-term relationships can be challenging, especially during personal hardships or a global pandemic. When stress levels are high and the time spent together can seem overwhelming, there are some secrets to success that can help keep your marriage healthy and alive.

All experts agree that if you want your marriage to make it, then you need to devote time, effort, and energy to your partner, no matter how many years you’ve been together. Even the most stable marriages require regular attention.

To help you keep your promise to live happily ever after, we talked with some of our happily married friends and neighbors, who shared some great happy-marriage advice.

Never leave the house without saying goodbye.

Mornings can be hectic and stressful, between packing lunches, serving breakfast and making sure everyone gets to school and work on time. It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos while rushing out the door. Even if you’re only heading out for a quick trip to the gym or grocery store, be sure to give your spouse a hug and a kiss before you leave. It only takes a few seconds and can make a big difference in your relationship, Practice the “sandwich” technique.

This method of communication works well anytime you feel the need to address a problem or concern. Face it, no one enjoys hearing about things they are doing wrong, and criticism often puts people on the defensive. Instead, try starting the conversation with a compliment, then address the problem, and end the conversation with a reminder of something else you like about your spouse.

Laughter really is the best medicine.

Even in stressful situations, sometimes all you need is a moment of levity to change the tone of the conversation. That’s not to say you should poke fun at your partner, but use humor to ease the tension if you can. Other ways to keep the laughter alive are by watching funny movies, going to see a comedian or playing fun board games.

Never stop dating.

It’s important to keep treating your spouse the way you did when you were dating. Schedule regular date nights and go out to dinner or to the movies. Do the things you love to do but be open to exploring new activities too. Sprinkling your routine with bits of spontaneity will keep things fresh. Take a surprise day trip, enroll in a class together or plan a little getaway — whatever you do, just make sure things stay exciting and a reminder of what life was like at the beginning of your relationship.

Ditch the phones.

Give your spouse the priority of your time and your full attention by turning off the technology. Designate specific times during the week and weekends to disconnect from the outside world. Your spouse will instantly feel more valued. People love to feel appreciated, and if you want to make your spouse feel extra special, an easy way to do that is to unplug.

Say Thank You, even for the little things.

Don’t save your kind words for the big things like gifts and flowers. Thank your spouse for all the little things he/she does to make your life easier. Perhaps your husband always empties the dishwasher, or your wife is the one who does the weekly food shopping. Thanking them not only shows your appreciation for the task but also lets your spouse know that you value the great way you work together to help each other out.

Take responsibility for your feelings and your actions.

If you have a bad day, don’t blame it on your partner, your kids or your boss. Mood swings and outbursts of frustration happen to the best of us, but remember that your feelings and your moods are your own responsibility. If your mood is caused by something your partner did or did not do, try talking it out using the sandwich technique we discussed earlier.

Make a point this Valentine’s Day to incorporate into your own relationship some of the advice above. With these marriage tips, you’ll be setting yourself up for a happy and healthy relationship for years to come. M

Preserving the Lincoln Banner!

uring the contentious election of 1860, with four candidates running for President, each candidate’s backers took to parading through the streets, at night and by torch light, to promote their candidate. Abraham Lincoln’s supporters called themselves the Wide Awakes, and the local chapter in Media marched under a huge banner featuring a clean-shaven Lincoln (he did not grow the beard until after the election), and slogans about preserving the Union.

A later description of the banner noted that “The marching club at Media penetrated all sections of the county and engaged in many a miniature riot. In Kellyville [now a part of Clifton Heights – Ed.], it was fired upon by the Democrats who had sworn that the man who had carried a Lincoln banner into that district should not carry it out.” When that account was written, the banner was hanging in the office of the Republican Party in Media, “a relic of the past” with “bullet holes through the folds of it.”

That Lincoln banner still exists, 160 years later, and is now cared for by the Delaware County Historical Society (DCHS).

In 2019 they launched a campaign to raise funds for its preservation, with the ultimate plan being to restore, protect and then display the banner in a clear plexiglass, air-pressurized case so that visitors can view both sides. The restoration work was completed in 2021.

The next step is to raise the money for the display work, through the #PENNIES4LINCOLN effort. We are on a roll in Delco! Let’s show that we can come together again to help preserve and display this important piece of Delaware County history.
