ost faucets require little maintenance, so it’s easy to keep those fixtures working correctly for a long time.

Every faucet, however, eventually gets to a point where it meets the inevitable fate of needing to be repaired or replaced. Here are 6 signs that it’s time for some faucet maintenance or replacement.

Squeaking Handle If the faucet handle squeaks when turning the water on and off, it means parts in the interior are worn out, and the faucet will eventually become unusable.

Worn-Out Parts A faucet has many small parts that may corrode or wear out over time.

Damaged washers, O-rings, valve seats and seals are often a direct cause of annoying faucet issues.

Unexplainable Water Meter Increase Not all faucet leaks are obvious. If you haven’t used water for several hours but your water meter increased, indicating water usage, that means you have a leak somewhere.

Anna loves being of service to her school as part of the Delaware County Christian School Ambassador Cabinet. As an Ambassador, Anna takes great pride in introducing potential future students and their families to the many things that make her school stand out. For Anna, it is the small size of the school itself, as well as smaller class sizes that make learning much more conducive, plus she says the school feels like family.

Soccer has been a major part of Anna’s life for as long as she can remember. The pre-season just ended, and Anna has been elected as part of a Tri-Captain team for the regular season. As a senior on the team, Anna helps with various aspects of planning for the team, as well as acting as a mentor for the freshmen and other new players.

It would be hard not to hear the enthusiasm in Anna’s voice when she talks about her recent internship at the Philadelphia Zoo. As part of the Zoo Crew, Anna was able to take part in many aspects of zoo life that the average person never sees. One activity that she particularly enjoyed was helping with the events and games the zoo puts on for children. However, Anna said the greatest part of being a zoo intern was gaining a much deeper understanding and awareness of conservation, of both the earth and its animals.

Not only is Anna a member of the National Honor Society, she is an Executive Board Member of Venture Crew 151. Although Anna has not yet pinned down exactly what college she hopes to attend or what she wants to major in, the areas of environmental science and agriculture are at the top of her list right now. At the same time, Anna finds her Advanced Placement Psychology class absolutely captivating, so she could end up going in that direction instead. No matter what Anna decides for her future, her passion for the earth will take her far.

T

his month’s Marple family is Nick and Kayla Amoroso and their four children. Nick and Kayla met back in 2001 while working at the Little Inn restaurant in Media. Fast forward 20 years and now they’re running two restaurants, raising four children, while still finding plenty of time to give back to their community. If you’ve dined at la Padella, eaten a Wimpy’s burger or sampled the snack bar at Rose Tree Woods Swim Club, then you may already know this hard working family.

Nick grew up in Springfield, but spent a lot of time in Broomall visiting his grandparents and other extended family who live here. With his family’s long history in the food and restaurant business, it's no surprise that Nick began working in food service when he was 16 years old. While a high school student at Cardinal O’Hara he worked bussing tables at a local restaurant. A few years after high school, Nick went on to study at The Restaurant School, one of Philadelphia’s first colleges to focus on excellence in hospitality education.

Kayla grew up in Glen Mills. She too, went to Cardinal O’Hara, but was a few years behind Nick, so their paths didn’t cross until later. Kayla also grew up in a family who loved food and cooking. “Both of my grandmothers influenced me in the kitchen. My dad’s mom was a wonderful cook and my mom’s mom was more of a baker,” said Kayla. “But it didn't become a passion of mine until I began working in the restaurant business. I realized, I love this!” After high school Kayla pursued a business degree from Delaware County Community College while also working as a waitress.

Nick was working in management at the Little Inn when Kayla began working there. Although Kayla said it was love at first sight, they were friends first and didn’t actually start dating until about a year after they met. The two discovered that they shared a common love of the fast paced restaurant industry, where things were always changing and you’re always meeting new people. Five years after meeting, Nick brought Kayla back to the Little Inn to ask her to marry him.

The couple married in 2006 and found a home in Broomall surrounded by Nick’s family. Their house is on the same street as Nick’s grandmother and aunt, with many of his relatives close by in Marple Newtown. “I’ve loved this street ever since I started coming with Nick to visit his grandmother,” said Kayla.

“It’s especially beautiful in the fall that reminds me of a beautiful painting.” They have great neighbors, too. “Whether it’s helping to move something, helping with the kids, or just borrowing a cup of sugar, we can ask anything of our neighbors,” said Kayla. “It’s a great feeling!”

For several years Nick owned and operated Sproul Beverage in Marple and Rocko’s Beverage in Media and Kayla worked as a Realtor for Century 21 until 2007 when they started a family.

Then in 2017, the Amorosos opened their own restaurant, la Padella in Media.

Kayla takes credit for the name la Padella, which means “frying pan” in Italian. “I loved the name because it’s easy to remember and it is the perfect description for our food—everything is made in a pan, tossed fresh and made to order.” Since its opening, la Padella has won several awards including Best of the Main Line and Best of Delco. Nick says the best part of owning a restaurant is the satisfaction of happy customers.

“Watching someone have a great meal and a great time at my restaurant is everything.”

The vision for the restaurant came from some of the restaurants Nick had worked in during his twenties. They really wanted something upscale, but with a casual setting. The dishes are inspired by their Italian heritage, but with a modern flare. It’s not just the delicious food that attracts customers, but also the friendly neighborhood feel. “Our restaurant is a meeting ground for people in Delaware County,” said Kayla.

“When customers walk in, they end up running into friends or acquaintances at the other tables. And with our connection to people from O’Hara, Marple and the local restaurant industry, we inevitably know many of the people who come in!”

Although this past year was challenging, Kayla and Nick said that a lot of positives came out of it. When restaurants had to close back in March 2020, Kayla said they had no choice but

to get creative. They were able to quickly move from dine in to take out. “We were also able to keep all of our staff, who are like family,” she said. “Everyone on our staff was able to keep working even if it meant taking on a different role. And when they reopened but with regulations, they got creative again. “If you told me five years ago we’d be setting up tables in a parking continued on page 12

Eight-year-old Tony is the youngest Amoroso. Tony loves sports and school and he enjoys learning about almost anything. “He always has weird and crazy things to share with anyone. And he’s always making people laugh,” said Kayla.

Like his older brother, Tony plays for MTLL and loves hitting the driving range with his Pop. Kayla described Tony as a ball of energy. “He’s always on the go,” she added. “He doesn’t really have a choice being the youngest of four!”

The Amoroso home is also filled with pets. They have two rescue dogs named Charlie and Winnie and a Red Footed turtle named Skittles. “I love animals,” said Kayla. “I would adopt hundreds of dogs, cats or any animal if I could!”

Always up for a challenge, the Amorosos recently became co-owners of Wimpy’s Original, the iconic hamburger shop in Media. After the previous owner approached Nick about the prospect of buying Wimpy’s, Nick said he got his cousin Tom on board who is also in the restaurant business. Now co-owners, Nick, Kayla and Tom are excited about this latest venture.

“We plan on keeping a lot of the same menu items that people love but we’re also adding in some healthy options,” said Nick.

In addition to her role as co-owner in both restaurants, Kayla also works full time as a special education assistant at Paxon Hollow Middle School. “My job in the school district is very rewarding,” said Kayla. “Knowing that I am helping teachers and students with daily activities and watching students meet their goals is so fulfilling!”

Kayla and Nick have four children. Their oldest, Sonny, is 14 and a freshman at Marple Newtown High School. A big sports fan, he’s been playing baseball for Marple Township Little League (MTLL) since he was five and then played baseball for Paxon Hollow Middle School and in the Broomall /Newtown League. Always willing to help out, he’s a great older brother and a kind and caring friend.

Giving back to the community comes naturally to the Amorosos.

Nick is a member of the Kiwanis Media Group, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of children by fighting hunger, improving literacy and offering guidance. Kayla enjoys volunteering at Worrall, especially with fundraisers and events like Pizza Bingo and the holiday shop. They’re always willing to donate food and sponsor many local charities, sports leagues and events throughout the local communities. This past summer, when the Rose Tree Woods Swim Club needed someone to run their snack bar, the Amoroso family stepped in. “When we learned late in the summer that our swim club needed help, we jumped at the opportunity,” Kayla said.

Once in a while this family gets in some down time. When they do, they head to Sea Isle or Brigantine and most recently Deep Creek, MD where they spent time fishing, boating, paddleboarding and just enjoying family time.

When it comes to living here in Marple, Nick and Kayla said they’re proud to be Marple Tigers. Kayla said it best, “We just love this community, the schools and the people!” And for all the Amorosos do for the Marple community, the feeling is mutual!

he wait is over. Finally, after almost 100 years, we now have a local bar to gather with friends and enjoy a drink by the glass. The Marple Public House opened its doors in August and is serving up Philly style food and delicious cocktails right here in the heart of Broomall. These two childhood friends and longtime Marple Newtown residents are also the founders of the Marple Civic Association and it’s been their mission to make Marple a desired place to live & raise families. For years, they’ve been wanting to add an attraction that was lacking here in Broomall: a neighborhood bar. After securing one of the seven liquor licenses on the ballot two years ago, they were finally able to make their dream a reality. “I’m so proud and honored to open the Marple Public House,” said Nick. “Growing up here, I would have never imagined opening the first pub in nearly 100 years. The Marple Pub is going to live on well past me and will be a place where friends and families gather, eat great food and drink great drinks. A lot of great memories will be made here.

I am so happy to be able to do this in my own community.”

Executive Chef Dean DuPuis has curated a menu that includes traditional gastropub food but with a twist. Dean, who previously worked at Rouge in Philadelphia, is an award winning chef who also serves as the Culinary Director at Splash and Delco Steaks. The Marple Pub’s menu includes customer favorites like corn fritters, “Marple” fries topped with crab meat and special sauce and a Big Daddy Burger: Two patties slathered with mustard, cooper cheese and caramelized onions.

Other highlights include fried shrimp and pickles, rigatoni a la vodka with Louisiana crawfish and a butcher board with daily selections. All of the beef comes from a farm in Chambersburg — the same beef that Delco Steaks uses, which recently won them the honor of the Best of Philly Award for Best Cheesesteak.

Of course any of their signature dishes would not be complete without a refreshing cocktail to wash it down. Located on Sproul Road just off of West Chester Pike, the pub can serve almost 100 people with eight tables inside, four more out on the patio and ample seating at the bar. The Pub’s interior has a clean minimalist look with wood beams along the ceiling and vintage photographs from the Prohibition era lining the wall. The 36-foot long bar top facade seats 25 and opens completely for an open-air alfresco experience.

With delicious food and drinks and a friendly and talented staff, it’s no wonder the Marple Pub is already a popular hangout.

Lisa Miller: The Broomall Rotary Club’s New President Lisa Miller, President of Broomall Rotary Club and her husband Glenn

E

very Broomall Rotary Club (BRC) President comes in with their own projects they are passionate about and unique set of skills to make them happen. For newly elected President Lisa Miller, that passion is helping children, especially ones who may be struggling financially or academically. “I love helping the underdog,” said Lisa. “Whether it’s a child who is suffering from a learning disability or can’t afford a summer camp, I am passionate about giving children opportunities that others have.”

Since it was founded in 1961, the club has had many worthwhile humanitarian projects, both locally and overseas. “Our programs such as Student of the Month, Vocational Awards and the Scholarship Fund really give a sense of pride to young people here,” said Lisa. The BRC also sponsors many of the community events we look forward to year after year such as the Christmas Sharing, Pictures with Santa, Junior Olympics, the Firecracker 5K, and the Doggy Show.

It was a chance meeting with former Rotary Club President Lou Pace that led to Lisa joining the BRC. “I took my car to Lou’s auto shop in Broomall for repairs and Lou invited my husband and I to join the Rotary club,” she said. Lisa ended up joining and her husband Glenn helps out when he can. Lou said when he met Lisa he knew she’d be an asset to the club.

“When Lisa came into the shop, I happened to have paperwork out about the Veterans Park project and Lisa was very interested. She’s got a lot of energy to get things done,” he said.

Lou joined the club when he was in his fifties after his children were grown. He was looking for a way to contribute to the Broomall community. “I believe that if you’re happy with your life, give back!” he said. While serving as president, he was instrumental in getting the Veterans Park project off the ground. “It’s amazing how one idea can change the whole community,” he said.

Since Lou’s encouragement to join the BRC 2018, Lisa has been dedicated to working with the club and the community to bring even more projects into focus and more ways to make a difference in our community and beyond.

Her passion for community service and helping others comes from her own life experience. It was after suffering her own personal tragedy that she discovered how important it is to have community support. Lisa and her husband Glenn lost their young daughter suddenly in 2008 and were humbled by the outpouring of love they received from the people in their community. “Kindness goes a long way,” said Lisa. “Our friends and neighbors were so helpful to us when we were grieving. I can honor my daughter’s memory by making my own community a better place.” Lisa and Glenn also honored their daughter’s memory by creating a scholarship through the Devon Miller Memorial fund.

first married and had children. “We really wanted to give our three children a suburban life,” said Lisa. “We had a nice home where our kids had plenty of space to ride their bikes and could walk to school.”

After several years of commuting from New Jersey to Delaware County to visit and care for her aging parents, Lisa and Glenn made the decision to move back to the area in 2016 and settled on a home in the Rosetree section of Broomall. Glenn worked for SEPTA while Lisa worked in food services for Marple Newtown School District and sold jewelry online. And then, what started as supporting a local business, turned into a new job for Lisa. “ I really love supporting local businesses in Broomall. I was a frequent customer at the Mad Hatter Boutique and became very friendly with Danielle Camacho, the boutique’s owner,” Lisa explained. “She eventually offered me a job!”

Lisa’s diverse professional background as well as her personal experience are what make her the perfect person to develop programs and see them through to their potential. “As a mom and a wife I know how to get things done!” said Lisa.

As president, Lisa said she’s excited to continue with the passion projects that her predecessors started and to bring her own ideas to the table. “I’m especially proud of all the work the club has done to raise money for the new playground at Veterans Park. It will be a safe place where children of all abilities can play together and the new equipment will be developmentally appropriate for children with and without disabilities.”

Although due to COVID-19, some of the club’s fundraisers had to be postponed last year, Lisa said they are looking forward to upcoming events this fall. “We’ve got a handbag bingo and a Vegas night in the works,” she said. She’s also spearheading a project on American Chestnut trees, which have been virtually extinct for decades. The club plans to plant 15 of these trees in the Marple area this year. Each month the board welcomes guest speakers. Last month State Representative Jen O’Mara came and thanked the BRC for establishing Broomall Rotary Field at Veterans Park, furnishing bus shelters, providing playground equipment in parks, and more.

The club currently has 35 members, which Lisa describes as a small but mighty group. “We have a diverse group of people, all with unique sets of skills and personal backgrounds,” said Lisa. “ Each of us sees ways to serve the Broomall community with our own points of view.”

Marple Friends & Neighbors wishes the BRC a happy 60th anniversary and congratulates Lisa on her new position as President. “I’m honored and grateful to be the President of a club that has such a long and distinguished history,” said Lisa.

al Tartaglia has been impressing his friends with baseball facts and World Series statistics since he was a boy growing up in Drexel Hill. “I was really good with memorizing baseball stats,” said Sal. “As a teenage baseball player riding the bus to games, I loved challenging my teammates with trivia about the World Series. It was tough to stump me!” Wanting to do something with all this knowledge, he began keeping track of highlights and stats of World Series games for 30 years and in 2019 published a book called World Series Chronology: Compare, Contrast, & Coordinate the Champions.

As its title suggests, the book compares contrasts and coordinates the World Series champs, specifically the years 1903 through 2018. It’s chock full of anecdotes and social and historical

Sal Tartaglia’s book: World Series Chronology: Compare, Contrast & Coordinate the Champions

correlations. “What’s unique about baseball is how much the sport is tied to our country’s history,” said Sal. “It’s wrapped up in everything from politics and commerce to our culture.”

Sal’s book differs from many of the books out there about baseball. “There are few, if any, dedicated books relating to just baseball,” he said. “And none that I've found that specifically delve into the fall classic.” The book provides a convenient way for baseball fans to find information. Readers don’t have to dig deep to answer questions like Who had the most sweeps? or What teams dominated a decade in their respective league?

Always a big baseball fan, Sal became especially passionate about the World Series when his 5th-grade teacher Mr. Blanchard brought a TV into his classroom so they could watch the Cardinals vs. the Red Sox in the 1967 World Series.

“Because many games were played during the day back then, kids didn’t always get to watch the World Series,” Sal explained.

“After seeing such an exciting game that year, I was hooked.

I love my home team, the Phillies, but every year since 1967, I got excited for the fall classic, no matter who was playing.”

Sal wasn’t just a baseball fan; he was also a ballplayer. Growing up in Drexel Hill, he played little league and eventually played varsity baseball at Upper Darby High School, where he was a student. At age 18, he enlisted in the Navy, and after his twoyear stint, he was able to pick up his baseball career again and play for the Delco League, a semi-pro league.

It was around 1986 that Sal officially started keeping track of his World Series stats on his typewriter. “I was really old school,” said Sal. “I used an IBM typewriter to start putting all of my information together. I was even cutting and pasting pictures and going to Staples to make copies.” During this time, Sal was also raising a family here in Broomall with his wife Tracy.

As a young girl, Tracy’s family had moved from Overbrook to

Broomall, and when she and Sal married, they agreed Marple would be the perfect place to buy a home. Their two children Marissa and Sal Jr. attended Marple Newtown schools, and Sal Sr. got to spend afternoons on the ballfield watching his son play baseball for Marple Newtown High School.

For years Sal worked in the construction industry and considered his collection of World Series statistics a hobby. Eventually he compiled all of his notes into a red binder, and with some encouragement from friends and family, he began to think he had something there. “People were telling me I should write a book,” he said. “I realized that what I could put together was different from what was already out there as far as baseball statistics books.” After self-publishing his book in 2019, he is now able to do his own self-promotion through social media and word of mouth.

So what’s next for Sal now that he published his first book? Last month he partnered with Sirius XM radio personality Mark Mancini to do the “Liberty Bell Smack,” a Philly-Style show on Thursdays from 6-7 PM on WWDB 860 AM & 97.5 FM. How great would it be to go to a party and have all of those people assembled in one place? As it turns out, they ARE assembled in one place, and have a Marple connection: their final resting place at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery on Sproul Road. As far as I can determine, none of those men were born or raised here, and how each one ended up here is a story that each family will have to tell. The Cemetery is operated by the Catholic Church, so the other thing that each of these famous folks likely had in common was their Catholic faith.

How do I come by this information? First an admission: I am a taphophile: a person with a healthy interest in gravestones and cemeteries. A site called Findagrave.com allows volunteers in local communities to post up information about the people buried in their local cemeteries. The site asks people to rate each entry by how “famous” each person is. So when you go to any particular cemetery on the website, you will find a list of its most famous occupants. There are actually several more “famous” people at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery. I have listed just the ones whose names I recognized. And of course there may be more. It’s a peaceful place to stroll and enjoy the company of these famous 20th-century figures. And fellow taphophiles!

The Lesson of the Forgotten Home Office

I

n this basement waterproofing case study, you’ll read about how a large, damp, musty and unused basement was quickly transformed into a new moisture- and mold-controlled quiet home office.

In the late ‘90s, a homeowner (a Senior Sales Executive) built a 6,000-square-foot raised ranch home on 5+ acres. Two days each week, he worked from home, making sales calls by phone.

But despite all the amenities his home included, nowhere in that massive house was there a private and quiet room with no distractions.

For five years, he had been making his sales calls in his home’s 2,000-square-foot (!) basement. It was empty except for a small area rug, a folding card table with a desk lamp on it, a desk phone, one very old leather chair and a milk crate for his files. Basic and simple, but that was all he needed for his busy day’s work.

Luckily, this was a simple and relatively quick basement makeover project: The goal was to create a dry and sanitary space where he wouldn’t be distracted by the pool cleaners, the weekly lawn crew, his two Golden Retrievers who loved to run around the house, his college-age sons home for holidays and summers, and neighbors who frequently dropped by for coffee and conversation with his wife. When he was quietly working in his basement, everyone assumed he was busy somewhere in the house or that he wasn’t home. With no one bothering him, he could get his work done and then spend time with his family.

Problems in the basement included damp walls, a musty smell and a noisy dehumidifier. The solution was twofold. On the outside of the house, surface drains were added, the foundation was regraded, and rain gutters were cleaned and adjusted for proper and easy maintenance. On the inside of the house, the basement walls and floor were washed down into the existing sump pump. Mold treatment and waterproof coatings were then applied to the clean walls. The floor was covered with high-gloss paint. And some new window vents were installed.

After this “makeover,” which took less than two weeks, the basement was still just as empty as before, but it was welllit and ventilated naturally. The musty smell was gone, and a dehumidifier was no longer needed.

An interior french drain is often not required to turn a damp, musty unfinished basement into dry space that can be used as a place to exercise, work on some projects, watch a movie or listen to music. Or, as in this case study, to create a simple and quiet home office whose only distraction is perhaps the birds tweeting outside. M

How to Choose the Right Flooring for Your Needs

T

here are many things to consider when selecting flooring for your home or office. You should consider your needs, your personal taste, and the specific function of the room when deciding on the right flooring. Hard-surface flooring can include wood, vinyl or some type of composite. These products look so amazing, you would think that it really is wood or ceramic tile. With better technology comes better-looking and longer-lasting products. And with better sizing and easier installing, these products can be a great alternative to real wood or tile. Most products can even be installed over existing flooring, often resulting in reduced installation labor costs.

You may also want to consider the desired function of your floor. If you will be moving heavy furniture across the floor, you may want a floor built for dent resistance. If your room has a large amount of natural light, especially something like a sunroom, look for floors that are made for heat resistance. And if you have pets running around the house, you may need scratch-resistant flooring.

A good waterproof option is luxury vinyl tile (LVT). LVT is manufactured in planks or larger tile form, as well as veneer hardwood planks.

Almost all the vinyl products are waterproof, offering a wider variety of areas in which they can be used in your home. For instance, basements have a tendency of getting a wet spot or

two, and vinyl may be the best option to last long and clean easily. LVT comes in many qualities, some with thicker vinyl. The thicker option feels more like real wood and generally tends to be better underfoot.

The best dent-resistant or scratch-resistant flooring option is laminate, a composite type material with a dense backing and a layer on top with an extremely tough surface. If this room will have heavy traffic of either large machinery or pets and small children, laminate flooring may be the best option for you.

With all hard-surface flooring, the wear layer can be different, some with urethane and some with aluminum oxide finishes. Both finishes are excellent. The preferred wear layer is about 20 mil urethane finish, and aluminum oxide has a very high density making it one of the best.

There is also a wide variety of plank sizes, from 3" up to 9" in width and lengths up to 80" plus, for larger rooms and that larger plank look, which would otherwise be cost-prohibitive with real wood.

With new products coming out all the time, it can be a challenge to stay on top of what’s available. When looking for new flooring for your home or business, make sure to learn about the different options and consider which floor is best for your needs. M

To assemble, just glue the succulents to some moss and secure on top of the pumpkin. Do not cut the pumpkin.

Spritz with some water once a week. The best part about this project is when the season is over, simply peel the arrangement from the top of the pumpkin and place it in a saucer containing about an inch of soil. The succulents will continue to grow and can be used for your next holiday project.

Choosing the Right Air Purifier for Your Home

I

t may be time to invest in an air purifier, especially if you’ve spent the summer sneezing and wheezing inside your home.

Air purifiers reduce dust, pollen and other allergens. Some air purifiers also help eliminate odors.

Using varying types of technologies, air purifiers come in many different forms and sizes. Prices range from a few dollars to several hundred dollars, for devices that may or may not solve your problems. The air filter that comes as part of your furnace is your home’s first defense in keeping the air clean and your furnace operating properly. Many add-on, higher-quality filters are also designed to filter out dust, mold, allergens, pet dander and other pollutants that circulate around your home.

If someone in your household suffers from allergies or a respiratory ailment, furnace filters should be changed more frequently than the usual quarterly recommendation. Filters come with a MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value): The higher the rating, the more contaminants can be filtered out.

A MERV rating of at least 10 is recommended by the American Lung Association if changing your filter as recommended doesn’t help alleviate symptoms of allergies or asthma. Here are three kinds to choose from: • Mechanical filters work by removing particles from the air just like a furnace filter. Some may be more effective than others. HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters have MERV ratings of up to 20. They are not reusable.

• Ionic air cleaners operate by releasing into the air negatively charged ions, which stick to positive charges that are inherent in pollutant particles. This causes the particles to stick to each other and settle out of the air onto objects in the room.

You also need to decide whether you want a whole-house air purifier or one or more portable units. Whole-house units can be installed directly into your existing HVAC system, whereas portable units can be set up wherever you wish. While less expensive and more convenient, portable units tend to be noisier and less thorough in purifying the air throughout your home. Whole-house cleaners require professional installation but they are more effective in decontaminating your entire home. Contact an indoor air-quality specialist who can discuss these options and help you decide what would best suit your needs and your budget. M

The What, How & Why: Brakes Edition

his article is going to deep-dive into one common car care need: Brakes! As you read this article, you’ll learn all about brakes and why keeping them maintained is so vitally important.

What are brakes?

We all know that brakes are what make your car stop. But brakes are more than just the things you commonly replace, like the pads and rotors. Brakes, or the brake system, go all the way from your brake pedal through a hydraulic system with pistons and brake fluid, through brake lines and hoses, to those final disc or drum brakes.

How do brakes work?

Brakes work by pressing either the brake pad (in disc brakes) or the brake shoe (in drum brakes) into the disc (commonly known as a rotor) or the drum, respectively. Doing so creates a LOT of friction — enough to stop the car by converting the kinetic energy of a car in motion into heat.

Why do you need new brakes?

Over time, all that friction and heat will wear down those components, the pads and rotors or the shoes and drums. The pads and shoes will wear down more quickly than the rotors and drums. Without replacing what has gotten worn down, you won’t be able to stop as effectively as before, thus increasing your risk for injuring yourself and others.

Why do you need new brake fluid?

Brake fluid is the brake system’s hydraulic component that allows the pads and rotors to be applied effectively. Over time, brake fluid deteriorates, gets dirty and less effective.

How can you tell when you need new brakes?

You may feel like you have to push on the brake pedal harder, almost into the floor, to make your car stop normally. You may also hear your brakes constantly squeaking, squealing or grinding. A high-pitched scraping sound could be pad-wear indicators, literally sounding an alarm. And in some cases, a red brake warning light may light up on your dashboard!

What happens when my mechanic inspects my brakes?

Your mechanic will be able to identify the specific issue with your brakes. For example, while excessive brake pedal travel could mean worn pads, it could also be caused by low brake fluid.

Your mechanic will also measure the thickness of the pads and rotors and whether they’re evenly worn. Those measurements will then be compared with the manufacturer’s recommended guidelines. But generally, most shops will recommend new pads and rotors when only 20% of the original thickness remains (as new pads can range from about 3/8"to 1/2") or if the pad is worn down to 3/32 of an inch. N

ext time you’re out, look to the person on your left and right. You may notice their rolled shoulders and head forward posture. No, it’s not due to the cell phone they have in their hands and are staring intently at; it’s their nowadapted postures that have become the absolute norm due to phones and other electronic devices.

Although we are way ahead in technology, our generation is unfortunately leading the way in spinal degeneration, arthritis and chronic illnesses. Lower back pain is now so common that it affects almost 90% of adults.

back). Between the spinal vertebrae are intervertebral discs that act as spacers and shock absorbers. With age, injury or poor posture, these discs often lose their hydration and elasticity, which decreases their ability to handle all the load-bearing forces of daily activity.

As the discs get thin, changes occur in the relative position of the vertebrae and the connective tissues throughout the spine.

Over time, the thinning of the discs and loss of disc space often results in increased pain and decreased mobility. This pattern of degeneration can ultimately lead to microfractures and cartilage injury. Although the body tries to replace and repair the damage, it is often insufficient to overcome the degenerative process without assistance.

Might I Have Arthritis?

The classic symptomatology of arthritis includes joint pain, swelling and stiffness. As with most forms of osteoarthritis, the most pronounced symptoms are pain and stiffness in the morning. In general, if there’s no evidence of nerve root compromise, pain from an arthritic spine is localized with possible dull aching. If the degeneration of the spine continues into a diagnosis of spinal stenosis, patients may experience numbness, tingling or weakness in their legs, due to irritation of the lumbar nerve roots.

Choosing the Right Lawyer for the Job

W

hen facing a legal challenge, choosing the right lawyer makes all the difference in the world. It could literally mean the difference between success and disaster. Here are four steps to take to choose the right lawyer for your situation.

1. Identify the subject matter and keywords.

Just as doctors have specific areas of medicine, lawyers also practice specific areas of law. Here are some examples of areas of law and the keywords for each.

• “Wills and Estates” (a loved one passes or financial planning is needed) • ‘Workers’ Compensation” (injury on the job) • “Personal Injury” (car accidents, slip and falls, defective products, malpractice) • “Family Law” (divorce, custody, support, equitable distribution, adoption) • “Contract Disputes” (lemon law, contractor mistake, failure to pay, landlord/tenant)

3. Experience matters and is vital for success.

Once you have a list of lawyers to choose from, it’s very important to look for a lawyer who has quite a bit of experience practicing law in the area of your legal issue. Take a look at their resume, website and client reviews. Keep in mind however that sometimes the party from the other side of the case, who did not do well, may give a very good, successful lawyer a bad review. You also have to be careful of reviews from other lawyers because sometimes competitors will do negative reviews of very good lawyers.

4. Schedule an appointment to interview your chosen attorney.

Some interview questions to ask include: How long have you been practicing in this area of law? How many cases have you handled? When was the last time you had a case in this area of law, and/or conducted a trial with presentation of evidence and direct/cross examination of witnesses? You should be in good hands if you choose the lawyer who knows the most about and has the most real-world experience with the case law and rules of practice and procedure in the specific area of your legal issue. Suffered a serious injury at work or in an accident?

Social Security Disability needed or at risk?

2. Research lawyers by location and subject matter.

The next step is to look at the geographic area where you live and/or where the legal issue arose. For example, if you were injured at work and live in Media, PA, you can search for these words: work injury lawyer Media PA or Delaware County PA. Another example is if you are disabled with a non-work-related disability and cannot work, you might use these search keywords: social security disability lawyer Media PA. Other law-related search engines include Findlaw, Avvo, Martindale, Lawyers.com and Google Business. You may also want to call the Bar Association of the county where you live or where the legal issue arose and speak to someone directly.

Bar associations have lists of attorneys for different areas of law, so it’s easier to speak with someone who will help identify what kind of lawyer is needed.

Mike Duff: Local Photographer and Filmmaker

roomall resident Mike Duff is having the time of his life. He has a fulfilling career as a pediatric respiratory therapist and a successful photography business. Now he’s adding screenwriter, producer and director to his list of accomplishments. He just finished his first movie short, 8-4-21 A Night From Hell, and he's bringing it to the independent film community.

If you’re a frequent reader of Marple Friends & Neighbors, you may recognize Mike as he’s been a guest photographer for our hometown magazines. He’s a Delco guy, originally from Collingdale, and he and his wife have lived in Broomall with their two children for the past 26 years.

After graduating from high school, Mike said he was looking for some direction and joined the Merchant Marines from 1977–1980. “The Merchant Marines gave me the opportunity to travel the world and I got to visit destinations that many people don’t get to see,” Mike explained. “It also taught me self-discipline and resourcefulness, which are great skills for any career.”

When Mike returned from the Merchant Marines, he enrolled at Delaware County Community College in their program for Respiratory Therapy. For the past 30 years he’s worked in the Intensive Care Unit at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

“What I love most about my career as a respiratory therapist is I feel that what I am doing really matters,” said Mike. “Not only do I enjoy doing it, but it’s very fulfilling.”

Mike’s schedule of three 12-hour shifts at the hospital has allowed Mike the opportunity to explore other passions. He’s always had an interest in the arts, especially photography and film. He is a self-taught photographer who loves taking pictures of families and babies. He got his professional start by taking pictures of homes for local realtors and eventually he started his own business called MicDuffPhotography.com. Since he started in 2002, Mike has captured beautiful moments for brides and grooms, babies and families and numerous events.

He has also photographed many of the Resident Feature families who have been on the covers of our hometown magazines.

It was about 20 years ago that Mike realized he also had a passion for filmmaking. “For a long time I was scared to pursue my passion for film,” Mike explained. “But my job as a respiratory therapist showed me that life can be taken from you at any moment. I decided at that point I was going to give my dream a shot.”

In 2019 Mike received a Television Writing Certificate from UCLA in their extension program, and he’s just a few classes shy from completing his Bachelor of Arts in Film and Media from the University of Arizona. Although Mike says he’s a bit of a late bloomer in the directing world, he’s always been a film fanatic and is inspired by directors like Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock.

Mike and his crew have spent the past year filming 8-4-21 A Night From Hell at Romarco’s Italian Restaurant and Tiki Bar on Baltimore Pike in Clifton Heights. It’s the story of Sydney, a nurse who thinks she killed her patient the night before. She's panic-stricken, shaken, and all she wants is to forget about the night before. Since wrapping up production and editing, Mike is now anxiously waiting to hear from the film festivals he’s sent the film to. And, he’s already started writing his next film short: Love During Covid. “Film is a great outlet for me,” said Mike. “I write and create and it’s pure joy!” M
