When you suffer from a pounding headache, what do you do? Do you grit your teeth and carry on? Lie down in a dark room? Pop a pill and hope the pain goes away? If we don’t listen to our body, it cries louder AND LOUDER until we finally listen and take action to make some important changes.
Relax, breathe deeply, and read on for a great solution.
More Americans complain about headaches than any other health condition, including back pain! Every year, 45 million Americans — one in every six people! — suffers from frequent headaches. Unfortunately, the most popular but often ineffective treatment is over-the-counter or prescription medication.
The most common type of headache is the tension headache. It’s estimated that 80–90% of the U.S. population suffers from tension headaches at some point in their lives. Tension headaches are typically related to abnormal posture, muscular tightness, joint stiffness and restricted motion in the body. Dysfunctional patterns of movement and posture affect how much tension and stress your body holds. The body must compensate for these dysfunctional patterns by any means necessary, and it accomplishes this by altering tension points. Your brain and nervous system must compensate for this dysfunction by altering blood flow, muscle movement patterns and breathing, which can lead to tension headaches.

The second most common type of headache is the migraine headache, which affects approximately 16–17% of the population. Migraine headaches are far more debilitating than tension-type headaches.
Chiropractic treatments get to the CAUSE of the headache by helping to normalize muscle tension, restore joint range of motion and optimize postural control of the head and neck, thereby reducing the workload that your muscles must apply just to keep your head up during the day. Proper spinal alignment and muscle control helps give the body a fighting chance of avoiding a tension headache.
Other Ways to Avoid Headaches:
• Get proper sleep.
• Have your blood pressure and medications checked.
• Use proper ergonomic posture at your workstation.
• Limit prolonged neck bending for cellphone use.
• Manage your stress.
• Breathe from your belly, not from your chest.
• Exercise and stretch regularly.
• Drink a lot of water!
If you suffer from headaches and are tired of taking pain-relieving medication day after day, chiropractic treatments can help you regain the quality of life you desire — pain free and medication free.
