At this halfway point in this historic year, our magazine staff decided to create a little bit of Marple history for 2021. We hope to continue next year too. In this June issue, for the first time, we name our Marple Friends & Neighbors of the Year: The Tammaro Family. Melanie and Jason Tammaro have combined many years of service protecting others as police officers, supporting parents through social media, and helping Marple Township residents in need. While taking pride in making a positive impact in our community, Melanie and Jason are also raising their two children, Jace and Camilla, who attend Russell Elementary School. Congratulations to The Tammaro Family, whose story you can read on page 8, as our 2021 Marple Friends & Neighbors of the Year.

Energy Efficiency: According to the U.S. Department of Energy, when a storm door is installed properly, it can reduce energy costs up to 50%. Storm doors help keep out extreme heat or cold, and they provide an additional barrier from the outside elements. Some storm doors include a Low-E (Low-Emissivity) glass, which provides additional protection from UV rays.

Ventilation and Air Flow: A storm door that has a changeable glass and screen, retractable, or venting option allows for better ventilation and air flow for your home. Opening your entry door and using the screen option on the storm door will allow beautiful spring or fall fresh air into your home. When the screen option is not being used, the glass option will allow natural light in.

Entry Door Protection: A storm door provides a level of protection to your entry door. It reduces maintenance costs by protecting the entry door from outdoor elements such as rain, wind and extreme heat or cold. But if sunlight rays will directly shine on your door for more than four hours a day, a storm door is not recommended because that can create a heat build up in between the doors and damage the entry door’s finish.

June Sproul Lanes Students of the Month This month, ALL 2021 Graduates are the June Sproul Lanes Students of the Month! This most “unusual” school year, with its social distancing, masks and remote learning requirements, has helped the Class of 2021 create extra-special memories and develop essential life skills of flexibility, resourcefulness and gratitude.

We asked some of the 2021 Grads who have been a Student of the Month since September what they appreciate most about having experienced the pandemic as a young person. November 2020 SOTM Erin Corcoran said this experience has helped her understand what she truly values in life, and she has learned to live in a more grateful way. February 2021 SOTM Luke Carden said he has greater appreciation for “the little things in life,” including getting to play again on his school’s lacrosse team this spring and attending his school’s prom. And March 2021 SOTM Noah Curry said that he now appreciates and enjoys more than ever time spent with friends, who also have been trying harder than ever to keep in touch.

Bringing People Together Is Fun, Sometimes Like a Puzzle.

Two months ago, I riddled trivia questions with mention that Bringing People Together is not a trivial thing in these times.

I’ve been told my trivia questions, with the cryptic hints I related to our advertising Sponsors, got our readers turning pages with more fun than task. That’s not surprising because our Sponsors have become so well-known to our readers from the colorful ads that are the reward our Sponsors gain and which make our magazine possible.

me most about our Bringing People Together mission, particularly in Marple Township, is why some well-known Broomall businesses have not chosen to become advertising Sponsors of our community through our hometown magazine. There are good reasons I’m sure, but still I’m puzzled.

Sometimes small local businesses don’t advertise or consider community sponsorship as being necessary. Some businesses don’t want more business. And we must always keep in mind that there are many ways to support and sponsor residents of Marple Township. But still, even businesses that have not established a budget for advertising or community sponsorship should be finding ways to brand their business with the communities they depend on for sales revenue.

As we emerge from the pandemic, our mission to be Bringing People Together is clearly understood by our readers who have rewarded our Sponsors with new respect and loyalty for demonstrating how much Broomall means to the success of their business. That was the goal when we launched our magazine three years ago, and thanks to our readers, being a Sponsor of Marple Township has been proven as a good return on investment, delivering loyal customers who have come to love reading their hometown magazine every month. It should not be puzzling to any business any longer. There’s a party going on that we call “social media in print,” and in a puzzling way, some businesses are still noticeably absent from the party.

W

e are excited to introduce you to this month’s Resident Feature and the Marple Friends & Neighbors Family of the Year: The Tammaros. Melanie and Jason Tammaro have both spent decades serving and protecting others as police officers. And from supporting fellow parents through social media to helping Marple residents in need, they take pride in making a positive impact in the community.

Melanie and Jason are both Broomall transplants.

Melanie grew up in northeast Philadelphia, eventually moving out to the Main Line. She graduated from Harriton High School where she was active in softball, volleyball, cheerleading and theater. After high school, Melanie attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earned a BA in Criminology in 1997. Inspired by her Criminal Justice classes, she went on to the Police Academy at Delaware Community College and graduated in 2001.

Jason grew up in Haddon, NJ. After graduating from Haddon Township High School where he was a s t a n d out baseball player, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Temple University. He graduated from the Police Academy in 1990, and worked as a police officer and Sergeant until he retired in 2016.

In 2003, Melanie and Jason were both working at the Lower Merion Police Department when friendship quickly turned to romance. Because they worked together, Melanie said it was important they got on the same page. “We knew this couldn’t be a casual thing so we had a serious talk about our relationship pretty quickly,” she said. They married in 2006, on Grand Cayman Island, where they spent two weeks scuba diving, fishing, swimming with stingrays and spending time with friends and family there. Jason had already been living in Broomall for several years and they knew it would be a great place to start their married life and raise a family. “Not only is our street beautiful, it’s filled with lots of fun families and kids,” said Melanie.

For the past 19 years. Melanie has been a Lower Merion police officer. After 13 years of patrolling the Philadelphia border as a beat officer, she became the Dispatch Officer-inCharge. She also started the Car Seat program at LMPD, and

was trained as a Certified Passenger Safety Technician (CPST), helping hundreds of parents and caregivers by teaching them proper installation and use of car seats. In her role as a CPST, Melanie speaks at schools and daycare centers, to educate staff and parents about car seat safety. “This is the most rewarding part of my job!” said Melanie. “Making sure children are safe and educating caregivers is so important because vehicle crashes are the #1 cause of death for young children. I know families I helped who have been in crashes but the children suffered only minor injuries. I would like to believe that I am saving lives,” she added.

In addition to her police work, Melanie coaches Marple Junior Tigers Cheerleading and is a sales representative for an online boutique, Cami’s Closet Clothing, which sells leggings and other workout gear. “I wouldn’t sell these if I didn’t believe in their quality,” she said. “They’re really popular because they’ve got fun patterns and make you look great!” And, in 2019, she became an ordained minister and had the honor of officiating the marriage of her mother and step-father.

Jason worked for 26 years as a police officer before he retired 5 years ago. He now has more time for his hobbies like coaching ice hockey, driving his 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner hot rod and cooking. Since he first impressed Melanie with his homemade sausage and peppers back in 2003, Jason has been entering barbeque competitions, making delicious meals and desserts, and even canning peppers and pickles. Growing up, he learned to cook from his mom, and today he can be found in what they call Taverna Tammaro, creating new recipes like crab and avocado dishes and a lamb dish that Jason calls “Melly had a little lamb.” “I first taste something in my head,” said Jason, “then I try to come up with something unique.” “I love being a guinea pig for Jason’s recipes!” added Melanie.

Melanie and Jason have two children, Jace and Camilla. This fall, Jace will be a 5th-grader at Russell Elementary, where he loves Math and Reading. Outside of school, he plays ice hockey for Marple Newtown and for the Haverford Hawks. He loves joining his dad for rides in the hot rod or playing video games and Beyblades. Known at school for being kind and caring, Jace is always standing up for himself and others. In summertime, he can be found swimming at Rose Tree Woods Swim Club or paddleboarding or fishing at the beach.

Jace’s little sister Cami is a sassy and sweet 7-year-old who sleeps with a big pile of stuffed animals every night. She loves real animals too — even bugs! She’ll be a 2nd-grader at Russell this continued on page 10

In fact, all four of the Tammaros love hockey. To keep in shape, Jason plays ice hockey twice a week for a police and fire team and also for an over-40 mens’ league. Melanie said she has been a long-time fan of the sport, especially the Philadelphia Flyers, and now loves being a hockey mom. And if the family isn’t ice skating on a weekend, they’re roller skating at one of the local rinks.

The Tammaros also make it a priority to give back to the local community. “Giving back is in my DNA,” said Melanie. A proud Board Member of the Marple Civic Association (MCA), she got to play Mrs. Claus this past Christmas, and helped collect toys for local children in need. She’s also the founder of the Facebook group Marple Moms Meet. While on maternity leave in 2014, Melanie started the online meet-up group. “I really wanted to meet other moms of kids close in age to mine, to have playdates and just make friends.”

Although it’s not limited exclusively to Broomall moms, she found the name of the group Marple Moms Meet to be catchy.

What started out as a few dozen other moms is now up to nearly 3,000 members! In the beginning, they organized ice cream socials and playdates. The online platform made it convenient for planning potluck events at local parks. This past March, they held their 7th successful Easter Egg Hunt, which now includes the Easter bunny, Marple EMS and Police, vendors and food trucks and fun activities for kids.

Marple Moms Meet is also a place to support the community by organizing toy and turkey drives, collecting food and fundraising for local families who are facing hardship. It also supports local “Mompreneurs” by advertising moms’ local businesses each week. “And so many friendships have been formed through the group!” Melanie said. “It’s heartwarming to see that my group has brought so many people together.”

Melanie and her family also enjoy bringing people together in their Greenhill neighborhood. “This past year, we became even closer to our neighbors: We basically quarantined together. All we had was each other, and we made the best of it!” said Melanie. Whether it’s taking turns hosting a fire pit or the annual block party, all the kids and parents always enjoy being outside together. “Jason and I joke that even if we want to move to a larger house someday, we wouldn’t want to leave this street,” said Melanie, “because you can’t buy great neighbors!”

If you want to know what it’s like to be neighbors with the Tammaros, just ask anyone in their Greenhill neighborhood.

Neighbor Jen McGee said they are the type of people whose door is open to welcome you in. “They’d never want to see anyone alone on a holiday,” said Jen. “They always have room for an extra place at their table.” Charlene and Mike Freeman have been neighbors with the Tammaros for 11 years. “They are great neighbors!” said Charlene. “You can always count on them especially when you have emergencies. And they’re always up for a good time!”

But curb appeal is also how well your home’s exterior matches or enhances the overall look of your neighborhood. If you’re currently or soon will be selling your home and its exterior elements show they’re aging or failing – the roof leaks, windows are outdated looking or obviously drafty, wood starts showing rot, etc. – you may not get any reasonable offers. Even worse, some potential buyers will pull up to the curb and drive off within a few minutes.

Whether you’re a current or soon-to-be home seller or you simply want to update or spruce up your home’s exterior, consider these several ways to add to your home’s curb appeal.

Front Door: Probably the simplest and most cost-effective way to add some fresh “character” or charm to you home is to replace your front door. Doors now come in many different colors, textures, styles, and are constructed with energy

Windows: Most windows older than 15 to 20 years have insufficient glass and poor energy efficiency. Replacing your home’s windows should be considered an investment. A handful of manufacturers produce top-quality windows that are coupled with Low-E (Low-Emissivity) glass. Low-E glass minimizes the amount of ultraviolet and infrared light is able to come through window glass without minimizing the amount of light that enters your home. These modern windows, which typically come with frames made of aluminum, wood, or composite materials, provide superior performance and a clean, refreshing appearance.

Roofing: Metal roofs are now very popular, as are different styles of asphalt shingles and shingles made of natural materials such as slate and cedar. You can add dimension by mixing materials and color. Older homes that originally had slate or cedar shingles can be beautifully restored back to their original glory. A great way to improve curb appeal on mid-century homes, which typically have asphalt shingles, is to add a metal accent roof.

Siding: You might be surprised how much new siding can increase not only your home’s curb appeal but also the value of your property! Consider mixing colors and/or materials (cedar impressions, board and batten), or a more modern siding such as James Hardie cement board.

Porch/Portico: Many homes have some variation of this or it can be added by a minor design or remodeling project. This is a great way to showcase your home, possibly increase your home’s living space or simply provide cover when welcoming visitors on a rainy day! M

eeping your eyes healthy is a lifelong partnership between you and your eye doctor. With more than 32 years of experience in optometry, Broomall Eye Care is a neighborhood practice that provides relationship-based eye care services including eye exams, treatment and eyeglasses.

Since Dr. Michael Allodoli first opened the practice in 2006, he has built trusting relationships with his employees and his patients, who continue coming back year after year.

Before opening up his own practice here in Broomall, Dr. Allodoli worked in the retail eyeglass business, where he performed eye exams and prescribed eyeglasses. Although the job was fast-paced and enjoyable, Dr. Allodoli said what was missing was a personal connection. “One exam would run into another,” he said. “Jumping from one patient to the next didn’t allow much time to get to know any patients.”

Taking a risk, Dr. Allodoli left job security in the retail eyeglass business in 2006 and opened up his own practice in Broomall.

What he discovered was that working for himself was much more fulfilling than his previous jobs. “In my own practice, everything is much more personal. When patients come back, they get to see me again, year after year,” he said.

After growing up in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia, Dr. Allodoli graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He then went on to the Pennsylvania College of Optometry where he received his Master’s degree in Biology, and became a Doctor of Optometry in 1988.

While working in the retail eyeglass industry, Dr. Allodoli met his wife Lisa, at his company’s Christmas party. Introduced by a coworker who happened to be Lisa’s sister, the two hit it off and eventually married. The Allodolis settled in Marple and had two sons, Gianmichael and Robert. “I was already familiar with Broomall before moving here, and I loved the neighborhood,” said Dr. Allodoli. “We loved raising our children here, getting to know other families, and being part of a great community.” Their oldest son Gianmichael currently works as an HVAC technician, and Robert is in his second year at Delaware County Community College where he is studying Computer Science.

Saint Pius X School Since 2006, Dr. Allodoli has been able to grow his practice right here in his hometown. “Watching my business develop in the same town where we raised our children made the opportunity even more fulfilling and enjoyable,” said Dr. Allodoli. And not only is walking to work a perk, so is that personal connection to his patients because of working and living in the same community.

Dr. Allodoli said he’s especially grateful for his patients’ support during the COVID-19 pandemic. Back in March, 2020, the office remained open but only for emergency visits and for filling orders for glasses and contacts. Although his staff had to be laid off for a few months, he was able to bring all of them back to the office by Memorial Day 2020. And the patients who had put off routine visits began to return. “I really appreciate the support of my patients and staff. They were very patient as we adapted to the changes last year,” he said.

Oral Health Home Remedies That Actually Work

H

ave you ever wondered about the effectiveness of home remedies for common oral health issues? Many concoctions that were passed down from generation to generation as a sure-fire cure are now circulating on the internet. Unfortunately, many are anecdotal, untested, or unregulated, and some are actually unsafe.

Fortunately, there are a few safe and effective home remedies that can help relieve symptoms of some common oral health problems until you can see your dentist.

WARM SALT WATER RINSE: Warm salt water rinsing is one of the oldest, safest and most effective home remedies for various tooth and gum-related maladies. Sore or bleeding gums due to gingivitis, and wounds from a recent extraction or accidents such as biting the inside of the lip or tongue will all heal better and more quickly with warm salt water. Instructions: Dissolve ½ teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water. It should taste about as salty as sea water. Swish a mouthful for 15 to 30 seconds, then spit it out. Repeat with mouthfuls of that mixture until it’s all used. Repeat this rinse 3–5 times daily as needed.

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE RINSE: Some forms of gingivitis are more severe and painful than others. One form is Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis, which is common among college students due to lack of sleep, poor diet, lax hygiene and/ or stress. Fortunately, the bacteria that cause this infection are very susceptible to common hydrogen peroxide. When used with warm salt water, many cases can be completely resolved

without requiring antibiotic treatment. Instructions: Use 4 ounces of 3% hydrogen peroxide OR use 2 ounces combined with 2 ounces of water. Swish a mouthful for 30 seconds, spit it out, repeat until it’s gone. Repeat 2–3 times daily as needed.

A WARM, MOIST TEA BAG: A warm, moist Black Tea bag can help stop the bleeding of an extracted tooth. Instructions: Simply roll, moisten and bite gently on the Black Tea bag in the location of the persistent bleeding. Change every 30–45 minutes until bleeding has stopped.

A CUP OF MILK OR WATER: A knocked-out tooth can be saved and replaced in the socket if the tooth is quickly placed in milk or water, to help maintain the living cells on the root surface.

CLOVE OIL: Clove oil has been used for centuries to alleviate tooth pain. To reduce pain from a tooth with a broken or lost filling, put a drop or two of clove oil on a folded cotton or gauze pad, and bite down on it at the pain source.

COLD COMPRESS: For an infected or abscessed tooth, a cold compress can offer relief until you can see a medical professional. To get through the night, take an Ibuprofen and use a freezer pack or ice cubes wrapped in a dish towel. M

History Spotlight

I

n 1816, the Pennsylvania legislature authorized mapmaker John Melish to make detailed county maps for Pennsylvania. What did he find notable enough to include on the Marple map?

Marple is divided into uneven quarters by its two oldest roads, the West Chester Stage Road (running east-west) and Springfield Road (running north-south). At the south, the Springfield Quaker Meeting is indicated by “QM,” and nearby is one of the earliest schools, which today would be in the Sts. Peter & Paul cemetery. Old Marple Road runs west towards Crum Creek and a bridge. Eagle Road runs east to Darby Creek, where a saw mill and grist mill were located. Further

turn left, you continue down today’s Sproul Road to the Jones saw mill. The left fork of the Springfield Road meets the West Chester Road as today, at the shopping center.

To the north, two roads run from the West Chester Road – Malin Road and Barren Road – and connect in an area that at the time was called the Barrens, an area “perched on a knob of serpentine” with poor soil for farming. However, in that area, a spring came out of the ground, and an entrepreneur named Burns had opened Byrnes Mineral Springs, where he touted his bathhouses, the medicinal qualities of his springs, and that “LIQUORS of the best kind will be provided.”

The Marple of 1816 was a farm community of about 669 people. The two oldest roads took you out of Marple; the rest of the roads were laid out to take you to places a farmer needed to go: a grist mill to grind his wheat or corn, and a saw mill to obtain lumber to build his house, barn and sheds. The post office, Presbyterian Church, a tavern and a general store, were all still in the future.

Marple Newtown’s Independence Day Parade Is Back!

Time to get your lawn chairs and American flags ready because the Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade is back! After an exceptionally long year of cancellations and closures, Marple Newtown residents will finally be able to celebrate our Country and our Freedom!

Important to note is that the parade will take place on Monday July 5th starting at 10am. Because the 4th falls on a Sunday, the Parade Committee decided to delay the parade a day, out of respect for the churches along the parade route whose services would otherwise be interrupted. The fun will begin at St. Albans Circle, and continue eastbound on West Chester Pike to the Broomall Fire Company’s new facility on Malin Rd. A rain date is scheduled for Saturday July 10th.

The Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade has been a staple of our community for over 75 years. Jan Ceton, Chairman of the 4th of July Parade Committee, is excited to welcome everyone back. “I think this year is going to be our best yet!” he said. “People are ready to get outside, celebrate and return to some sense of normalcy.” Jan, who has been at the helm of the committee for 37 years, loves watching generations of families come back every year. “We missed out on so many traditions in 2020,” he said, “which makes our return extra special.”

Although the parade was canceled last year, the committee worked hard to come up with a plan to unite our communities: They launched a Red, White and YOU! decorating contest for area residents and businesses. The turnout was overwhelming, with 59 entries. A caravan of judges toured the area and awarded prizes such as “Best Window,” “Most Patriotic” and “Hometown Heroes.” Merrie Staurowsky, Parade Committee Vice Chair, announced, “We were so thrilled with the amazing support and

Spectators this year will be entertained by marching bands such as Mersey-British Rock Invasion and the Slim Jim & Big Guy Band. And new to the parade this year is the Whoa Phat Brass Band. Our local marching bands, fire companies and first responders will join in the fun. Local businesses, community clubs and neighborhood residents will impress you with their decorated floats, marching groups and costumed individuals. But the little ones often steal the show with their creative and festive decorated strollers, wagons, hand-drawn floats and bikes. “A popular feature added in 2019,” Jan said, “was a ‘Quiet Zone’ where sirens and loud music were silenced for one block. That will continue in 2021.” The parade ends with an awards ceremony, where medals and trophies are given to the top three entries in each division, and their names and photos are featured in the following year’s commemorative book.

“The Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade is a wonderful way of bringing our two communities together,” Jan remarked. “It has been a pleasure to serve on this committee from the very beginning. We couldn’t pull it off without the total support of both townships, the participants and the spectators.”

Long-time Vice Chairman Rich Crowe is working with Leigh Ann Coary, who has taken over for the retired Dick Pound, on advertising for the 4th of July commemorative book that is distributed to over 4,000 residents and businesses. “This fabulous parade is funded entirely by the families and businesses in our community,” Leigh Ann explained. “Local businesses, civic organizations, clubs and individuals have the opportunity to place an ad to show their community support.” Leigh Ann said that there will also be an opportunity to donate during

ummer brings great warmer weather and even greater expectation of activities picking up as we come out of the COVID-19 pandemic. As we increase summer activities keeping health safety still in mind, we’ll find more people outside, more cars on the road and more opportunities that call us to remain mindful of safety in even more ways during our summer activities.

The month of May was National Water Safety Month. That mindfulness should be with us all summer. This month of June is National Firearm Safety Month, and next month, launching early with 4th of July celebrations, is, of course, National Fireworks Safety Month.

National Firearm Safety Month is a good time for all firearm owners to recommit to firearm safety year-round, following the call of the National Shooting Sports Federation (NSSF) to “Own It? Respect It. Secure It.” And the NSSF shows how to do just that, through its resources

L

eadership, event-planning, organization, communication and responsibility: These are just some of the skills to gain by joining a Venturing Crew, an inclusive program for young adults through the Boy Scouts of America.

Crew 151 is a local crew founded in 2017 by 17-year-old Marple Newtown High School student Peter Pilko. A Boy Scout since he was in kindergarten, by 8th grade, he was the oldest in his troop and was looking to interact with more kids his own age. “I enjoyed being part of the Boy Scouts and participating in all of their activities,” said Peter, “but what is great about a Venturing Crew is it’s geared toward 14–20-yearolds and it’s co-ed. It’s also a great way to give back to the community.”

Venturing Crews use the same aspects of the Boy Scouts, with the goal to build character, develop citizenship and foster personal fitness. Run by both youth and venturing advisors who

Through word of mouth, Peter was able to start up Crew 151, which meets at Marple Presbyterian Church. By recruiting friends and spreading the word through social media, the group has grown to 20 young men and women.

Currently instead of having one president, venturers Anna Schiller, Jason Ehrlich and Asenka Christokumar were all elected President in March 2021, and all three serve in a leadership role. Peter described Anna as a member of the crew who embodies the ideals of the group. She joined the group back when she was an 8th-grader at Paxon Hollow Middle School. And for Crew 151, big things meant organizing an extensive book drive this spring. All books collected will be donated to the Broomall Rotary Club, Cradles to Crayons and Books through Bars. In April, they joined Boy Scout Troop 151 for a spring cleanup event at Darby Creek in Broomall, and for Earth Day, they spent a day at the Fort Mifflin historic landmark, where they did trail maintenance and tidal area clean up. The group is also always willing to pitch in at Kids Against Hunger in Broomall, where they’ve had several meal-packing events.

Although they have been focusing on community service projects, Crew 151 is also looking forward to outdoor activities like paddleboarding at Marsh Creek and camping. And Crew 151 member Katie Petersen is planning an archery event. “The outdoor activities were my favorite part of Boy Scouts,” said Peter. “We look forward to these types of things with the crew, to have new adventures that challenge people.”
