Last month, I shared my hope that just like the good people of Bedford Falls did, so too would the good people of Marple do, by coming to the rescue of local businesses. And they did! I was right!

Readers recalled It’s a Wonderful Life and how that movie ended, with the residents of Bedford Falls coming out in the cold of night to financially rescue a hometown business that was about to close down for reasons that were undeserved. And readers came out in similar support as I had hoped.

Demystifying the PAYROLL PROTECTION PROGRAM

T

When the $349 billion initially approved by Congress was quickly exhausted, an additional $310 billion was authorized.

Surprisingly, as of the August 8 deadline for applying for a PPP loan, approximately $130 billion had not been borrowed.

To fund the PPP loans, the U.S. Treasury was authorized to use one of the Small Business Administration’s lending programs.

Businesses qualified if they had opened prior to February 15, 2020, and had no more than 500 employees. Sole proprietors, independent contractors, certain nonprofits and some others also qualified.

A unique aspect of the program is that a PPP loan can be entirely forgiven if the funds were used for payroll, rent, utilities or mortgage interest and if certain other requirements were met. Any funds not meeting those requirements must be repaid over 2 to 5 years, at principal plus 1% annual. Each borrower must apply to the SBA for forgiveness and must provide the required documentation and certifications to enable the SBA to calculate the forgivable amount.

The SBA’s recently published 10 pages of “Frequently Asked Questions” regarding PPP loan forgiveness show that the calculation rules are, not surprisingly, extensive and complex and contain opportunities and pitfalls for the unwary. A borrower who makes the wrong choice on the application could get less than 100% forgiveness and also a significant financial hardship. Because it’s been estimated that it will cost each business $2,000 or more to apply and due to the administrative burden of processing millions of low-dollar applications, Congress is considering a proposal to automatically forgive PPP loans of $150,000 or less and require minimal documentation from borrowers in that category.

Although Congress mandated that PPP loan forgiveness not create taxable income for the borrower, the Internal Revenue Service has announced that typically deductible business expenses (payroll, for example) will not be deductible if they were paid for by PPP funds that were later forgiven. Example: A small business used their entire $100,000 PPP loan for payroll, and their entire PPP loan gets forgiven. When that business calculates its 2020 Federal income tax owed, the IRS says it won’t allow the business to deduct the $100,000 payroll expense. So if that business is in the 30% tax bracket, they will be hit with an unexpected tax bill for $30,000. Professional organizations including the American and Pennsylvania Institutes of Certified Public Accountants are protesting the IRS position because it does not not comply with what Congress intended when it passed the Cares Act. The tax issues created by Payroll Protection Program’s loan forgiveness need to be clarified by Congress. M

Belle demonstrates excellence in Service to many communities, beginning at home, as a great big sister to her four younger siblings. She also loves babysitting for other young children.

She serves her Marple Newtown High School community in many ways: As a member of the Tiger Guides, she gives tours for 8th-graders and helps orient freshmen to the school. Belle is on the Tennis team; is a member of the Fringe Club (creative writing); and also enjoys participating in the Mock Trial and Debate Clubs.

Belle also serves the Marple Newtown community. She helps the Rotary Club with their Bag Bingo events, by soliciting sponsorships and prize donations and by selling raffle tickets at those events.

She also helps out at Camp Treasure Island, a Bible camp, where she leads crafts and game activities for 5-year-olds.

Her favorite school subject is History, and when Belle envisions her future, she sees herself possibly following in her mom’s footsteps in the legal profession. She’d like to someday start a nonprofit that helps needy people in the community.

Thank you, Belle, for your service to so many communities, and Congratulations again on this award and for being such an outstanding role model for so many!

S

enior citizens are vital, special and integral members of the Marple Newtown community. Marple Friends & Neighbors is excited to introduce our new feature, “Senior Profile,” where you can “meet” one of your senior neighbors and “hear” their perspective about what life has taught them about how they can achieve their goals and how they can best serve their community. This month’s “Senior Profile” is about Skip Torresson, a Broomall resident who exemplifies what it means to serve others. He even started his own business, The Stewardship Group, whose tagline is “It starts with a willingness to serve.”

Skip is the son of an Air Force officer. As a kid, Skip and his family moved around quite a bit. Skip’s various jobs over the years also took him to different states, and he’s had 34 documented addresses in his lifetime! He graduated from the University of Scranton with a B.S. in Political Science. He is a veteran, having served in the Air Force and Pennsylvania Air National Guard.

When Skip graduated from Scranton, he was accepted into University of Notre Dame Law School. Although he enjoyed what he calls “the greatest football season of all times,” he realized law school was not for him. He went to work for IBM as a Systems Engineer for 2.5 years and then moved into Computer Systems Sales. “It was a great opportunity to work at IBM in the early years of the computer industry!” recalled Skip. “IBMers got a world-class education in both systems and business.” After a decade at IBM, he worked in sales and sales

management positions with a number of large corporations including ITEL, National Railway Utilization Corp, Hitachi Data Systems and Unisys.

In 2001, he left the corporate world and was forced to answer the “tough questions” about what he really wanted to do.

“I was having a classic ‘half-time experience’,” Skip said. “I was 57 years old and going on job interviews when I realized I didn’t want to go back to what I had been doing.” Skip eventually realized he wanted to start his own business. “I knew I was here on earth for a reason, but hadn’t figured it out. I wanted to be a good steward,” he said. “Being a steward is the notion that I’m here for a reason, and what can I do with these gifts that I’ve been given?” After he came up with the company name, The Stewardship Group, his mission became clearer. After working with a friend on a logo, Skip created the tagline: Engaging Passion, Purpose and Spirit.

With his 30+ years of business experience in senior sales and management positions, Skip helps leaders implement highly effective processes for planning, alignment, communication and accountability. (Alignment means matching the business' strategic goals and tactical plans with its Mission, Vision and Core Values.) Understanding and implementing those processes requires specific leadership skills that The Stewardship Group develops using cloud-based planning and performance management solutions and other best practices. Skip and his team also provide executive coaching and retreats to help senior leaders gain clarity about strategic vision and goals and effectively communicate this to their teams.

Skip says the best decision of his life was marrying Joann, his wife of 30 years. He met Joann, a former first-grade teacher, at Daylesford Abbey, at a Wednesday night prayer group. It’s the second marriage for both, and their blended family of 5 kids has 21 grandchildren. “Our home in the Foxcroft neighborhood is perfect for hosting our large family where the grandkids can play and enjoy the pool,” said Skip.

Skip is also active in our local community. He and Joann are active parishioners at St. Denis in Havertown. He has served on several nonprofit boards and is a long-time member of Rotary International. As a member of the Fellowship of Companies for Christ International, he’s had the opportunity to take two mission trips to Uganda. Skip’s philosophy in life is the same as that of The Stewardship Group: People should be givers, not takers, and give back to the community. “I know we’re all here for a reason,” said Skip. “We are all called to use our gifts to serve others.”

Marty & Marilyn Godfrey: High School Sweethearts Feeding the Community Written by Holly Stupak

F

or high school sweethearts Marty and Marilyn Godfrey, food and family have always gone hand in hand. For almost 50 years, they’ve owned Mrs. Marty’s Deli, a staple in Marple, where customers come to enjoy their Jewish specialties like matzo ball soup, smoked fishes, brisket, homemade corned beef and fresh rye bread. The Godfreys’ three children grew up working in the restaurant and now their grandchildren are also learning about the business and what it means to have a strong work ethic. The restaurant is only closed three days each year, but even on those holidays, the Godfreys are still in charge of food, hosting their family and friends in their home in Broomall.

Marilyn and Marty met at Marple Newtown High School where Marilyn was a year behind Marty. It was in a summer school chemistry class that Marty and Marilyn met and got to know each other. Marty and his best friend wanted to take Marilyn and her friend out, but Marilyn wasn’t sure which of the two guys was her date. She ended up sitting next to Marty that night, and the rest is history.

Marty and his parents and sisters lived in West Philly until 1959 when his family moved to Broomall. He graduated from MNHS in 1962 and went on to study Liberal Arts at Temple University.

After realizing he was more interested in the food industry, he changed course and took classes in food marketing at St. Joseph’s University. Growing up, Marty worked in his dad’s supermarket and learned a lot about the food industry.

Marilyn grew up in Wynnefield, PA, and her family moved to Broomall when she was in sixth grade. She would go on to graduate from MNHS in 1963. After her three children were born, she received her nursing degree from Delaware County Community College, becoming an RN. “I wanted to be a nurse from the age of eight,” Marilyn said. “It sounded glamorous to me and I loved children, especially infants.” For the past 40 years, Marilyn has worked as an RN. She worked at Jefferson Hospital since 1987, and is currently teaching prenatal classes there. She also worked in the neonatal unit at

Delaware County Memorial Hospital since 2002 and, if not for COVID-19 and being in a high-risk category because of age, she would still be working.

After Marty and Marilyn got married, they lived in Philadelphia for a few years, then moved to Broomall and both got their real estate license. In the late 1960s, after selling real estate for a few years, Marty’s childhood friend talked him into opening a nursery school together. Despite knowing very little about running a school, he did it anyway. “At the time, I didn't even know you needed a license to open a school, but I knew there was a need in the Media area for schools that could serve a diverse population,” said Marty. So with Marilyn’s help with bookkeeping, they started Marson’s Nursery School in Media, and they eventually expanded to three locations that they ran successfully for many years. Marty did all this while simultaneously working with his father at his food market.

In 1976, they opened Marty’s Media Market. That was in the “pre-credit card” days, and their upper-crust customers charged their meat and veggies to “the house.” Eventually, as chain stores got bigger and offered more selections, Marty decided he needed to make changes to the market. He knocked down a wall and added a dining room, which became the popular spot to eat in downtown Media, known as Mrs. Marty’s Deli. In 1987, Marty got a great offer for a location in Lawrence Park Shopping Center, so he sold his building in Media moved the restaurant to Broomall and has been there ever since.

The Godfreys have three children: Betsy (Race), Jennifer (Godfrey-Taranto) and Jonathan. Their first child, Betsy graduated from MNHS in 1983. After earning a B.S. in Biology from Albright College, Betsy earned her Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy at Hahnemann (now Drexel) University. Following three years of clinical experience on the staff at Children's Rehabilitation Hospital, she attended Temple University Medical School. She is now a partner at Providence Pediatrics in Media. Like her parents, Betsy met her future husband Stuart in high school and they have three daughters: Taylor, Sally, and Abby. Taylor and her husband Tim, both engineers, met at Penncrest High School, making them the third generation of high school sweethearts. Sally graduated from Hunter College in New York, and Abby is a sophomore at Temple University. continued on page 10

Resident Feature Over the past four decades, The Godfreys have been lucky to have loyal, hard-working staff. They’ve had the same manager, Marge Lehr, for 42 years; the same deli manager for 35 years; one of their waitresses for 30 years; and many other dedicated employees. Marty also loves having his grandkids help out in the kitchen at Mrs. Marty’s. “I love teaching them about the business,” said Marty. “Even my grandkids who live in New York always spend time helping in the restaurant when they’re in town.”

Jennifer (Godfrey-Taranto) is a 1986 MNHS grad who went on to earn her B.F.A. from Syracuse University. She spent 20+ years working in the fashion industry, many of those years as a designer at Tommy Hilfiger, and now works in corporate event planning. Jennifer’s daughter Katie is a student at University of New Hampshire, where she plays Division I Lacrosse. Ally, Jennifer’s younger daughter and another lacrosse player, is a junior in high school. They live in Carmel, New York.

Jonathan is Marilyn and Marty’s youngest. After he graduated from MNHS in 1991, he earned a degree in Film from Temple University. After catching the acting bug, Jonathan spent some time in New York and eventually moved to Los Angeles, to pursue a career in acting. While living in LA, he discovered Radical Aliveness (an embodied healing practice) where he met his wife Yi-Li. The two continued on to become certified practitioners. Jonathan is now a faculty member at the Radical Aliveness Institute. He leads workshops throughout the US, and has a private practice in Philadelphia and NYC where he works with individuals, couples and groups. His wife Yi-Li has since joined Jonathan’s practice and is also a certified diversity facilitator and trainer. They live in Broomall and have a 5-yearold daughter, Ayla.

So, how did the name “Mrs. Marty’s” come about? Marilyn said, “One day when I was walking in Lawrence Park shopping center, I ran into someone who couldn’t remember my name. So instead, they just called out “Hi, Mrs. Marty!” I told Marty about it, and we agreed it would make a great name for the restaurant!”

Marty grew up cooking with his grandmother, who spent a lot of time with him while his parents worked long hours in their grocery store. He incorporated into the deli’s menu some of his grandmother’s recipes. Customer favorites are the Reuben sandwiches, the gefilte fish and the brisket.

Like all restaurants, they’ve felt the impact of the pandemic.

They can currently only operate at 25% capacity, which caused them to have to lay off some of their workers. “Despite what we’ve been going through, we have been blessed with loyal customers,” said Marty. “Our employees and some of the regular customers continue to call and stop by to check in on us.

Everyone wants to know how we are doing.” Mrs. Marty’s has been busy serving take-out, and with liquor licenses granted in Broomall, they’re also selling beer and alcoholic slushies, which have been popular. And regular customers continue to come in to pick up the popular rye bread.

Giving back to the community has always been very important to Marty. He served as President of the Marple Business Association and the Media Business Association and as President of Temple Sholom. He’s also a member of the Broomall Rotary Club. Each year during the holidays, he participates in the Rotary’s program to donate meals and gift baskets for families in need. Marty also supplies the hot chocolate and cookies at the annual tree lighting ceremony in Veterans Park. And for the past 20 years, as part of the Junior Initiative in local high schools, Marty has been speaking to high school students about how to run a business.

As restaurant owners, Marty and Marilyn both love being with people and helping the community. “My favorite part of running a restaurant is socializing with my patrons and staff,” said Marty, “It’s like a party 24 / 7.” And Marilyn added, ”It makes me happy to see how much Marty loves it!”

A

fter 31 years as a chiropractor, Dr. Marc Belitsky still loves what he does and he’s grateful for his solid practice in Broomall. He is a Board-certified chiropractic rehabilitation doctor and the Clinical Director of Broomall Total Health Center (BTHC; www.SpineDr.org), which he opened in 1989. “I get to know my patients really well, learning about their families and jobs. It’s fulfilling to be able to change their lives!” he said.

Dr. Belitsky opened up his practice after graduating in 1988 from the Pennsylvania College of Chiropractic. He personally serves each and every patient at BTHC, and treats anyone from children and stay-at-home moms to professional and amateur athletes. “Treating my patients is not just about pain management,” said Dr. Belitsky, “it’s about enhancing a person’s function, performance and quality of life.” What sets him apart from other practitioners is that he’s Board-certified in Chiropractic Rehabilitation and Board-certified in the diagnosis and treatment of scoliosis. He has also completed

advanced studies with a Master’s certification in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical injuries (whiplash) and associated TMJ dysfunction.

The team at BTHC helps patients through a holistic approach.

In addition to chiropractic care, they offer physical therapy and rehabilitation, decompression therapy, and nutrition and weight loss support. The staff includes a physical therapist, a physical therapy assistant, a physiologist and a massage therapist. BTHC’s Physical Therapist Pam Schick, DAPT, graduated in 1989 with a Physical Therapy degree from Northern Arizona University and has 30 years of experience specializing in outpatient Orthopedic Physical Therapy. “My staff are good, honest people who truly care about each patient,“ Dr. Belitsky stated. He said he was impressed how they really stepped up during the pandemic. Safety has been a top priority at BTHC, and they’ve been following all the CDC guidelines, staggering appointments, screening staff and patients, and offering telehealth appointments.

When a new patient comes into the practice, the team always evaluates them, to ensure issues are accurately and fully identified. “We evaluate each area of a patient’s stress: chemical, physical, and emotional,” Dr. Belitsky said. “It’s important that we get to the root cause of the problem, and not just look at the symptoms.” After a detailed physical exam, he’s able to recommend a plan that’s specific to that patient and will help alleviate their aches and pains. The main focus of chiropractic treatment is the relationship between the spine and the nervous system. With chiropractic treatments, pressure on the nerves of the spine is relieved, and patients often notice relief almost instantly.

Dr. Belitsky and his wife Janet, a neuropsychologist, are members of the local community. They recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary and have two grown sons. He spent many years coaching his sons in travel soccer and baseball, and he stays active by cycling, playing softball and skiing.

As a member of the Doctors Speakers Bureau, Dr. Belitsky offers lectures on a variety of topics at workshops and for local organizations. He is also an active member of the American Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board, the American Chiropractic Association Rehab Council, the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Association Sports Council and other professional and community organizations. He enjoys giving back to the community through charity work like donating to local food banks, and he serves on the Board of Congregation Beth El – Ner Tamid in Broomall.

After three decades of treating patients, Dr. Belitsky remains passionate about his work as a chiropractor. He is very active advocating with state legislators in the commonwealth to improve access and quality of healthcare for patients. “It’s gratifying to see people of all ages seeking chiropractic as an alternative to medication and surgery for a variety of health issues,” he said. “Every day, I have the opportunity to change lives.” M

Now more than ever, with modern-day stresses and injuries due to our technology advances and working from home, Dr. Belitsky and his staff are seeing an increase in upper back and neck tension and tightness, as well as headaches, which are often caused by sitting at a computer or doing a lot of work while seated.

During his 30+ years as a chiropractor, Dr. Belitsky has also treated all types of professional and amateur athletes including golfers, runners, tennis players, and local high school football players, for various sports-related injuries. This month marks his 5th year as part of the team that’s treating the U.S. Open golfers and caddies. With golfers often suffering from neck and shoulder injuries and caddies prone to lower-back injuries from carrying heavy golf bags, they are grateful for Dr. Belitsky’s services at the Open. He’s also been on call at Tennis Classics, as tennis players often need preventative treatment or treatment for a chronic injury.

As a chiropractor treating people of all generations, Dr. Belitsky said he’s used to miracles. Last year he treated a young woman who could not turn her head forward, making her unable to work. She had not gotten relief despite having seen many other practitioners. She eventually came to BTHC, and after several treatments, her tension was released. Dr. Belitsky also recently treated a 12-year-old boy who had been suffering from disabling headaches for several months. After finding the spinal misalignment and doing some adjustments, the boy became headache free.

HOW TO PREPARE Your Home’s Exterior for Winter

ooler temperatures invite us outdoors again but also warn that winter is not far behind. Fall is the perfect time — and weather — to prepare your home’s exterior to endure winter’s cold temps, snow and ice. Use the checklist below to find and fix exterior problems so your home is comfortable, safe and energy efficient over the next six months.

4 Identify and Fix Roof Problems or Damage Seasonal weather, especially snow and ice buildup, wear down and can sometimes damage your roof, setting the stage for serious problems. Every fall, after you clean the roof of all debris, carefully examine all shingles, flashing, and vents. Make sure there are no missing pieces. Inspect the roof for ponding water, depressions, nail pops and any evidence of that mold is developing. Re-seal all flashing and any exposed fasteners.

Repair or replace shingles as needed. Check your attic for the proper amount of ventilation and signs of past leaks that you were not aware of. Consider calling a roofing contractor for a professional inspection and assessment. Their trained eyes can pay dividends by extending the life of your roof.

4 Repair or Replace Drafty Doors and Windows Drafts or air leaks around door and window frames reduce your home’s energy efficiency and comfort. While inspecting doors and windows, a good cleaning and recaulking is also recommended. Reseal small openings to prevent minor leaks.

Bigger drafts may require replacing the doors and/or windows.

Finally enjoy spending more time outside but also prioritize exterior maintenance. To ensure your home’s exterior is ready for winter, contact a professional for thorough inspection, repairs and replacement if necessary. M

4 Check Gutters and Downspouts Make sure all gutters, downspouts and underground drains are clear and flowing. This might require snaking underground drains. As leaves continue to fall, continually clear gutters for debris or install an appropriate leaf guard. Consider replacing old gutters, which often develop leaks due to freezing and refreezing of water blocked by debris. The cost for new gutters is usually more manageable than spending money to fix a damaged gutter and the part of your home damaged by the malfunctioning gutter.

4 Inspect the Exterior Siding Exterior siding gives your home’s interior walls an extra protective layer against winter’s chills. Even if your home’s current siding is still in pretty good shape, get it power washed, to eliminate mold and mildew that built up over the humid summer.

Then carefully check the siding for signs of wear and tear. If it’s time to replace the siding, fiber cement siding is recommended because of its versatility, but many other options are also available.

When families cannot organize and synthesize the enormous amount of information, the entire search process can easily stall out, leaving the senior in no better position than at the start of the search. Using key strategies when searching for a community can make the search process easier and have a higher likelihood of finding a great match for the senior.

Strategy #1: Define the Budget Assess the senior’s assets and monthly income to understand what can be afforded each month. Without knowing this upfront, valuable time can be wasted.

Strategy #2: Don’t Go It Alone Finding the right senior community is a huge decision. Don’t do it alone! Professional help can save a lot of stress and time, narrowing the available options to the ones that best fit your needs. To ensure that you have a good experience while searching and optimal long-term results, local experts should offer the pros and cons of different options, and advise you on each step of the process.

Strategy #3: Make Informed Decisions Even if the need for AL/PC is urgent, it’s still important to do your research. Spend time evaluating three or four options so you can get a feel for the types of communities available.

They will vary by the level of care provided, types of accommodations, activities, and aesthetics. Unfortunately, there are circumstances that may hasten the need for Assisted Living (e.g., the senior ends up in the hospital), making the need for professional guidance even greater.

Strategy #4: Understand the Pricing Structures Understanding the care available and associated fees can help you determine which facilities will work best within the budget. Are care needs all-inclusive of pricing or charged on an as-needed basis? Ask questions like what will be refunded and what will be forfeited if the senior leaves the community after only several months?

Strategy #5: Involve the Senior in the Decision Involving the senior is a critical aspect of the search for an AL/PC community. Listen to their feedback to understand what is important such as apartment size, activities they enjoy, aesthetics they prefer. The best tactic is to present two or three pre-vetted options, then allow the senior the ultimate decision.

Involving the senior will help them stay in control of their life choices and feel better about the decision to move.

Most communities in PA are licensed as Personal Care rather than Assisted Living, although they are both very similar. M

A Prescription for Healthier Smiles

I

n 1945, researchers conducted a large-scale, 15-year study, to determine the effect of adding low-dose fluoride to Grand Rapids, Michigan’s public drinking water. That study resulted in a 60% reduction in tooth decay and launched one of the most successful public health programs of the 20th century.

Approximately 66% of the U.S. population receives the benefit of fluoridated drinking water, but many Philadelphia suburban communities do not, including Marple Newtown. Fortunately, parents have many ways to ensure that their children receive the fluoride needed to develop healthy, cavity-resistant teeth.

Naturally Occurring Fluoride Public water and well water typically contain some measure of naturally occurring fluoride. Our local municipal water utility can provide up-to-date test data on the mineral concentrations of its water. And it’s inexpensive for well water users to have their water tested for the same compounds. In either case, the recommended concentration of fluoride in drinking water is 0.7mg per liter. For children 6 months to 14 years, this should account for 40% to 70% of their total recommended daily fluoride intake.

Fluoride Supplements Beginning at 6 months of age, infants and children up to 16 years of age should be given fluoride supplementation if fluoride in their drinking water is less than 0.3 mg per liter. Your pediatrician or pediatric dentist can prescribe fluoride supplements in the form of drops or tablets.

Fluoridated Bottled Water Many families today prefer to drink bottled water rather than their home’s tap water. One way to ensure that formula-fed infants are getting enough fluoride is to make their formula using fluoridated bottled water. For the rest of the family, the IBWA website has a list of bottlers that follow FDA guidelines for fluoride.

Common Foods High in Fluoride One of the best food sources of fluoride is grapes, grape juice and especially raisins. Other foods such as spinach, blue crab, shrimp, carrots and potatoes also tend to contain significant concentrations of fluoride.

Toothpaste and Mouthwash The most effective source of topical fluoride in the home is fluoridated toothpaste and mouthwash. Children who brush twice a day with toothpaste containing 1000–1500 parts per million of fluoride have been shown to be significantly more resistant to tooth decay. Daily use of fluoridated mouthwash is also advantageous for older children and teens.

Separated at Birth?

f you’ve grown up in our area, you have come across “Mad” Anthony Wayne. He was a General during the American Revolution. The town of Wayne is named for him. His house, Waynesborough, is near the golf club of the same name. A statue of him on horseback is at the top of Wayne’s Woods in Valley Forge, and he’s also the golden horseman at the Philadelphia Art Museum. His troops were the ones surprised by the British night attack that’s remembered as the Paoli Massacre. Wayne’s family worshipped at Old St. David’s Church, and the General, or at least part of him, is buried there as well. Wayne is a hometown hero whom we can proudly call one of our own.

Anthony Wayne died in 1796, but his memory inspired several other American heroes. Marion Morrison was born in Iowa in 1907, and then moved to California. In high school, he played football on his school’s team, and was seen around town in the company of his dog, Duke, whose name Marion soon took as a nickname. wanted to cast him in a lead role, but not with that feminine name. The director suggested a name change for him, to Anthony Wayne, after the General — the epitome of rugged masculinity. The studio chief said “No, too Italian.” And so, the director suggested a solid English first name: John. So Marion Morrison became John Wayne, and went on to star in 142 movies in the course of his acting career.
