ON THE COVER
Celebrating Five Years of Bringing People Together in Marple!
Dear Friends & Neighbors,
This new August issue is an august issue, because this month we are celebrating the 5th Anniversary of Marple Friends & Neighbors. Since our inaugural issue in August 2018, our humble hometown magazine has found its place on the coffee tables and countertops, and in the hearts of Marple Township residents, by fulfilling our magazine’s mission to be Bringing People Together through our unique brand of social-media-in-print.
Regular readers know in each new issue we spotlight a Marple resident or family on our cover and tell their story. This month we pause that singular custom to put our spotlight back on all 60 of our past covers for this special 5th Anniversary issue. See how many of our past 60 covers you recall, and how many residents you recall being surprised to find on the cover of your hometown magazine.
This month Holly Stupak tells us the story of Marple Friends & Neighbors by recalling her experiences as our lead writer and Content Coordinator, and her insights gained from interviews with our staff, local influencers, families whose stories we published, and our advertising Sponsors. (See Holly’s cover story feature beginning on page 10.)
When asked to share my favorite experience as Publisher of Marple Friends & Neighbors, I told Holly it has been serving the local business owners I’ve come to know personally, who our readers see advertising on the pages of our magazine. I’m honored to know them because I watched the decision each made, never solely on return on their advertising investment. I witness our advertisers investing in a community that is important to their business success, which they know is made better by having a free monthly magazine dedicated to Marple Township residents.
We all can thank the advertising Sponsors for making our magazine possible. And I must thank our lead writer and Content Coordinator, Holly Stupak, our Graphic Designer, Kim Cesati, Lisa Jeffries, my Executive Assistant, Crissy Everhart, our Cover Photographer, my wife Jean Blaisse, and our local Experts and contributors of features and photos, all of whom combined efforts to get our past 60 issues to the printer, post office, and up online at: www.MarpleMag.com.
On this occasion of our magazine’s 5th Anniversary, I also thank you, as a loyal reader. Your monthly readership and the loyalty you return to our advertising Sponsors, by choosing to do business with them first whenever possible, has joined you to the Bringing People Together mission in our community of friends and neighbors.
Thank you all. Take a bow. And take this special 5th Anniversary issue with you on vacation to kick off the next five years of Marple Friends & Neighbors

AUGUST STUDENT OF THE MONTH
The August Casey’s Public House Student of the Month is Daniel Lain, who is a rising Senior at Marple Newtown High School (MNHS). Daniel enjoys a very well-rounded high school experience and received a Certificate of Achievement and a $25 gift card from Casey’s Public House , our Sponsor of this program.
Dan is an Honor Student who is enrolled in multiple AP and college level courses, plus he’s a member of the National Honor Society in Science, English and Social Studies.
According to those who know Dan, they describe him as a very personable, affable person with a positive outlook on life. This is evidenced by the fact that Dan is the recipient of the ‘Positive on People Award,’ which is given to students who are nominated by staff members for being positive role models for other students.
Taking part in various activities is important to Dan. He is a member of Best Buddies, the Math Club, Interact and the Fellowship Club. He also enjoys taking part in several sports teams at MNHS, including cross country and track.
Dan is a graduate of St. Anastasia’s, where he was an altar server and frequent volunteer. He currently works at Fresco Pizza Grill in Newtown Square and is always happy to see friends and relatives come in for a great meal. He greets everyone with a smile and loves meeting new people.
Recently Dan built his own desktop computer from scratch, which is amazing when you consider he’s just 17 years old! He’s looking forward to attending college after graduation and is considering a career in Engineering.
Thanks so much Dan for being the light in the lives of so many. Casey’s is thrilled to have Dan featured as their Student of the Month, and everyone here at Newtown Square and Marple Friends & Neighbors sends our congratulations to Dan for this special award. M

Fall Pruning and Stocking Up On Firewood
Fall is right around the corner, so it’s time to think about fall pruning and stocking up on wood for the cooler temps.
Fall Pruning
Timing - Aim to prune your trees and shrubs during late fall or early winter, after they have entered dormancy. This timing helps minimize stress on the plants and promotes healthy growth in the following spring.
Tool Preparation - Ensure your pruning tools, such as shears, loppers and saws, are clean and sharp. Dull tools can cause damage to the plants and make pruning less effective.
Remove Dead and Diseased Branches - Begin by removing any
dead, damaged or diseased branches. This helps prevent the spread of diseases and encourages the plant’s overall health.
Prune for Structure - Evaluate the shape and structure of the plant, and prune to improve its form. Remove any crossing or rubbing branches and those that compete for space. Create a balanced framework by maintaining a central leader or main trunk.
Thinning and Reduction - If needed, selectively thin out excessive growth to improve airflow and light penetration.

Additionally, you can reduce the height or width of the plant by cutting back certain branches.
Research - Different plants have specific pruning requirements. Familiarize yourself with the pruning techniques and considerations for the specific trees or shrubs you have in your garden. Some plants may require minimal pruning, while others may need more extensive care.
Stocking Up on Firewood
Choose the Right Wood - Opt for hardwoods like oak, maple or ash, as they provide longer-lasting and more efficient fires compared to softwoods. Hardwoods generally burn slower and produce more heat.
Proper Storage - Find a dry and well-ventilated location to store your firewood. A woodshed or a covered area with raised flooring is ideal for protecting the wood from rain, snow and ground moisture. Stack the wood loosely to encourage air circulation.
Check for Dryness - Before using the firewood, check its dryness by inspecting the ends of the logs. Dry wood will exhibit cracks and splits, while green or wet wood will appear smoother and contain more moisture.

BROOMALL EYE CARE
Experienced, Friendly Optometry
Marple residents don’t have to go far to find a friendly, competent and caring eye doctor. Dr. Michael Allodoli of Broomall Eye Care is a local optometrist who has been providing relationship-based eye care right here in Broomall since 2006. Over the past several decades, he has built trusting relationships with his patients who return year after year and recommend his practice to our friends and neighbors.
Dr. Allodoli grew up in Overbrook and graduated from Malvern Preparatory School, where he especially enjoyed his math and science classes. He furthered his education at Temple University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. After Temple University, he earned his master’s degree in Biology from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and in 1988 he became a Doctor of Optometry.
Dr. Allodoli’s early career was in the retail eyeglass business, where he performed eye exams and prescribed eyeglasses. He found the job to be fast-paced and enjoyable, but ultimately what was missing was forming a personal connection with patients. “Jumping from one appointment to the next didn’t allow much time to get to know any of my patients,” he explained.
Looking for that personal connection sparked Dr. Allodoli to shift gears and open up his own practice. Since opening Broomall Eye Care in 2006, he’s been providing services including eye
exams, treatment and eyeglasses. Dr. Allodoli said that working for himself has been very fulfilling. “In my own practice, everything is much more personal. When patients come back, they know they’ll get to see me again, year after year.”
That personal connection was even more important during the Covid-19 pandemic and Dr. Allodoli said he was grateful for his patients’ support. Back in March 2020, the office remained open but only for emergency visits and for filling orders for glasses and contacts. When the office opened back up for its normal business hours, patients who had put off routine visits began to return. “I really appreciated the support of my patients and staff during that challenging time. They were very patient as we adapted to the changes throughout the pandemic,” he said. The office staff and patients know each other by name, seeing the same familiar faces every time they come for their visits. Patients are typically greeted by Dr. Allodoli’s wife Lisa, the office manager, or one of their other friendly staff members. Optician Stephen Lacoste has been with the practice since it opened, and his son Samuel is also part of the team, helping with the insurance side of the business.
Michael and Lisa are longtime Marple residents. The couple met at a company Christmas party back when Dr. Allodoli was working in the retail eyeglass business. He and Lisa hit it off, married and decided to settle down in Marple to raise a family. Their sons Gianmichael and Robert both graduated from Marple Newtown High School. “We loved raising our children here, getting to know other families and being part of a great community,” he said. The Allodoli’s home in Marple is even close enough for them to walk to work. When they’re not working, an ideal day for them is to spend time in their garden. Although owning a practice doesn’t always allow for many days off, we asked Dr. Allodi where they like to go on vacation. Perhaps no surprise to our readers, they love the Jersey shore, too!
“Working and living in the same community has allowed me to make personal connections with my patients,” said Dr. Allodoli.

That combination of personal connections, experience and expertise in the optometry field is why so many Marple friends and neighbors continue to recommend Dr. Allodoli’s practice for eye care. Getting to know his patients so well over the years has allowed him to give each one a more informed diagnosis and treatment plan.
Conveniently located in the Lawrence Park Business Center, Broomall Eye Care provides comprehensive eye care services, including eye exams, eye disorder diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases including astigmatism, glaucoma and cataracts. “Even if
you don’t need corrective vision care, these exams are important in order to monitor your overall eye health and wellness,” said Dr. Allodoli. He explained that regular exams by an eye doctor can help detect a variety of health issues. “Aside from getting access to vision correction like glasses or contacts, an eye exam can offer insight into other healthcare concerns,” he added.
Whether you need an eye exam, a routine checkup or eyeglasses, Broomall Eye Care is always accepting new patients of all ages. Call 610-325-7688 today or visit www.BroomallEyeCare.com to make an appointment or to learn more about their services. M

5 YearsCelebrating of Bringing People Together!
Lifelong Broomall residents, newlyweds, teachers, first responders, entrepreneurs, coaches, artists and veterans are just some of the many people who have graced our 60 magazine covers in the past five years. Yes, that’s right, Marple Friends & Neighbors is celebrating its five-year anniversary and reflecting on our many neighbors who have helped fulfill our mission of Bringing People Together!
If you’ve been a reader of our hometown magazine for these past five years, you likely look forward to a new issue of our free, feel-good, hometown magazine arriving in your mail every month. All of these issues have served our magazine motto and mission to be a catalyst for “Bringing People Together.”
Perhaps you knew someone in one of the Resident Features but didn’t know how they got started in their career or how they met their spouse. Maybe you had no idea their family history in Broomall dated back generations. Sure, you can check out your friends and neighbors on Facebook to see their latest vacation photos. Or maybe you follow your favorite local restaurant or local business on Instagram. But our Friends & Neighbors magazines combine the best elements of social media and print and allow us to dig deeper. Each family and business Sponsor works with us to craft an article about their history, their passions, and what connects them to Marple.
Marple Friends and Neighbors is just one of Best Version Media (BVM) magazines that connects thousands of businesses and residents through positive, family-friendly content every month. BVM is one of the fastest-growing print and digital media companies in the U.S. Here in Delaware County, besides in our community, BVM publications serve as the hometown magazine for residents of Newtown Square, Edgmont, Willistown, Springfield, Middletown, Garnet Valley and Chadds Ford.
With more than 1,200 monthly hometown publications, our publishing team is bringing businesses together with buyers, while providing local features of interest about people and places in our community magazine in print and online at www.MarpleMag.com And now, with BVM’s recently launched sports web portal, for local sports – Pee-Wee to Pro can be found daily at www.BVMSports.com.
BVM was launched in 2007 by co-founders Dave Durand, Pete Ericksen and Paul Lubinski. The trio developed a handful of magazines in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area before expanding BVM in 2012. In 2018 our magazine publisher, Bob Blaisse,
Resident Feature
Marple Friends & Neighbors / Bringing People Together 10
was then managing another publishing company when he and Dave Durand became acquainted. At that time Durand recruited Bob to join BVM to become Division Manager for Eastern PA. But while doing so, Durand offered wise advice that Bob would be better equipped to manage BVM’s Publishers in Eastern PA if Bob himself had the experience of launching a BVM magazine. And that’s how the Marple community came to find the first August 2018 issues of Marple Friends & Neighbors arriving in the mail, and also why a new issue has following in the mail every month since.
When our hometown Publisher was asked to sum up his experience of the past five years, Bob Blaisse responded with the same three words that serve as our magazine’s mission and motto: “Bringing People Together.” And then Bob told his staff what we already believed: “The last 60 issues of our magazines have delivered our brand of social-media-in-print that displays the common interests of our friends and neighbors - hometown pride in our local community.”
Bob and his wife Jean, who is employed by the Marple Newtown School District, came to live in our community after arriving home from their honeymoon in 1994. When asked what led her husband to take on the role of hometown Publisher, Jean Blaisse recalled how she and Bob have lived in the Marple Newtown community their whole married life and raised their four sons here while participating in school and sports teams, Boy Scouts and contributing volunteer service through many local organizations. “Our home is this community, and when Bob and I saw similar BVM magazines serving other communities in the country, we knew we wanted the same for our Marple Newtown and Edgmont friends and neighbors,” Jean said.
Bob and Jean Blaisse want to thank all their friends and neighbors for the many compliments about the magazine over the past five years. And thank their local magazine staff and contributors of all the feature articles and photos that have now been published in the first 60 issues. But as Bob, Jean and our magazine staff always respond to any kind words about our publications, the credit for Bringing People Together in the hearts and homes of over 12,000 homeowners now for five years, must always first go to our hometown Sponsors.
I asked some of our Sponsors what it has been like to be part of the “Bringing People Together” mission of the magazine. Jack Del Pizzo, owner of Del Pizzo & Associates, said, “Being part of the magazine’s mission is a privilege that enables us to actively foster connections, promote a sense of togetherness, and ultimately contribute to a thriving community.” As an Expert Contributor for occasional Accounting & Tax feature articles, Jack Del Pizzo also enjoys reading the articles of the other experts. “Reading the feature articles of fellow Experts is a valuable way to stay connected and learn from their expertise,” he added.

Deborah Truscello, from the Law Office of Deborah Truscello has also had a wonderful experience being part of the magazine’s mission to bring people together. “The entire staff are great to work with, professional, personable and caring,” said Deborah. “They truly coordinate with their experts in an effort to bring practical and helpful information to the readers and their community. I enjoy reading the other expert’s articles and patiently await each month’s magazine.”
Sponsors Scott Magness and Ray Magness of Scott’s Fireplace Products had this to say: “Keeping and supporting our community has always been important to us. With so many big
businesses and online retailers available, these magazines remind us about the wonderful things our community has to offer and how we need to work together and support our fellow neighbors and local businesses.” David Linn Cook, our weatherization expert for nearly four years, has doubled his firm’s expertise by joining with Waterproofing One’s owner, Joe Soster, as our Sponsor and Expert Contributors. Dave is also a Marple Newtown resident who said that he and his family enjoy receiving our Friends & Neighbors magazine each month, to read about people around town.

Our free monthly publication is made possible only by the funding from these and our other advertising Sponsors whose decision to advertise in our hometown magazine reveals to us just how important Marple residents are to the success of that
business, and reveals the loyalty of those business owners by making advertising payments that make your hometown magazine possible.
Celebrating this milestone anniversary of our publication has our team at Marple Friends & Neighbors not only thanking our Sponsors, but also looking back at the many families and individuals who shared their stories of positivity and inspiration with us. We checked in with some of our Resident Features to find out what it was like to be on the cover of their hometown magazine.
The Grosso Family (December 2018) was featured in the magazine in its inaugural year. Rita and Anthony have lived in Marple since 2010 and are raising three children Chiara, Monica and Joseph here. When I asked them about their experience about being featured in Marple Friends & Neighbors they recalled how much their kids enjoyed seeing themselves on the cover of the magazine. “When friends and relatives came for holidays, the kids couldn’t wait to show them the issue,” Anthony said. Rita remembered that being in the magazine also really got them into the holiday spirit. “The photo shoot was really fun! The pictures were taken at our home in early November so we quickly took down the Halloween decorations and replaced them with Christmas ones,” she said.
The Speer Family (January 2020) was excited to be able to share their story with their neighbors. Emily is also the owner of Speer Swim School and one of our Sponsors. Emily and her

This magazine has helped us learn more about the people we meet in our everyday lives,” she said. When their story ran in January 2020, the Speers were a family of six. Since then, they welcomed Winnie to their family!
The Cowley Family, Ali, Shawn, Owen and Brooke, kept their February 2020 cover story a surprise. “It was really fun because when the issue arrived in mailboxes, we received so many texts and calls from family and friends who loved the article,” said Ali. The Cowleys have lived in Broomall for 16 years and have always had a tenacious approach to life’s opportunities. Ali and Shawn said they look forward to getting the magazine each month. “I love seeing families I know on the cover,” Ali said, “but it’s also fun to read about others in our community whom I haven’t yet met.”
The Tremonte family said that they were often recognized for being on the cover of the December 2021 issue. “We are very lucky that we live in a great township,” said Kelly. “Marple families are the best and Marple Friends & Neighbors is a great way of looking inside and meeting the Marple families!” Since they were featured, the Tremontes created Danny’s Squad to raise money for Chromosome 18 Registry and Research society in honor of their son Danny. Kelly has also continued to sell her sweet treats through her business, Kelly’s Sweet Treats!
Ever since we launched Marple Friends & Neighbors in 2018, readers have told us how reading the local features in our magazine is like meeting new neighbors in the community they did not know well, including local business leaders. The same

feeling goes for me as I had the opportunity to interview families and business owners to write their feature stories. As the Content Coordinator for the past three years, not only has interviewing people here in Marple with such diverse backgrounds been a huge perk, I have found that taking on this role has made me feel more connected to this community and the people around me.
Sheila Turner-Hilliard, my magazine staff colleague and the Content Coordinator for our sister publication Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, shared a similar sentiment. Sheila told me, “I am a lifelong Newtown Square resident and business owner for the past 20 years. What I love most about my role as Content Coordinator is being able to meet so many interesting people and to share their stories with our community.”
It is thanks to Sheila and the other members of our publication team that we are able to build our magazines each month. The Friends & Neighbors team consists of many driven professionals who take pride in creating something special for our local community. Our talented writers,
Executive Assistant Lisa Jeffries, our graphic designer Kim Cesati and photographer Crissy Everhart care deeply about creating a beautiful magazine filled with local content and inspiring stories.
As we head into our sixth year in print, I hope seeing these neighbors gives you a sense of hometown pride, as these individuals and families are giving back to our Marple community and bringing us together. Thanks for reading!
Do you know a Marple family, individual or nonprofit group who should become known by our community? Make your nominations for upcoming feature articles by emailing your ideas to Holly Stupak at HStupak@ BestVersionMedia.com. M

for a Healthier
As the warm and sunny days of summer are winding down, there’s no better time to focus on your health and well-being. Shedding those extra pounds, improving nutrition and adopting a healthier lifestyle can be fun and rewarding in every season.
Before diving into any weight loss program, it’s crucial to establish realistic goals. Set achievable targets that align with your body type, activity level and overall health. Focus on losing weight gradually, aiming for steady and sustainable progress. Remember, healthy weight loss is about more than just shedding pounds; it’s about adopting a balanced lifestyle that encompasses physical activity, proper nutrition and mental well-being.
Engage in activities such as cycling, hiking or walking to burn calories while enjoying the pleasant weather. Regular physical activity not only aids in weight loss but also enhances cardiovascular health, boosts metabolism and improves overall fitness.
Nutrition plays a vital role in achieving weight loss and overall well-being. Focus on consuming whole, unprocessed foods that are rich in nutrients, including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and healthy fats. Opt for lighter meals and refreshing snacks, such as salads, smoothies and grilled veggies. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and limiting sugary beverages. Avoid crash diets and instead strive for a sustainable eating plan that nourishes your body.
Practicing mindful eating can help you make better food choices and develop a healthier relationship with food. Slow down and savor each bite, paying attention to hunger and fullness cues. Avoid distractions, such as screens, while eating. Be mindful of portion sizes and avoid mindless snacking.
Stress and inadequate sleep can hinder weight loss efforts. Engage in stress-relieving activities, such as meditation, yoga or spending time in nature. Prioritize quality sleep, aiming for 7 - 8 hours per night. Sufficient rest supports healthy metabolism, reduces cravings and aids in weight management.
Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends and family who share your health goals. Encourage each
other, swap healthy recipes and participate in active outings together. Sharing your journey with like-minded individuals can provide motivation, accountability and an opportunity for shared success.
By setting realistic goals, embracing outdoor activities, prioritizing balanced nutrition, practicing mindful eating, managing stress and sleep and building a support system, you can make positive and sustainable changes. M

August Is National Golf Month
Avid golfers need no excuse to hit the links any time of year. But in August, players are encouraged to introduce new golfers to the game by sharing their experiences and advice. That’s because this month is designated as National Golf Month!
Founded in 1993 by The Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA), National Golf Month is an effort to make the sport more diverse, equitable and inclusive. This month-long initiative stems from the PGA’s own annual charity event that promotes golf as a sport that is accessible to all genders and ages no matter their skill level.
So how can we celebrate and share our love of the greens? Take a trip over to Paxon Hollow Country Club (PHCC), a classically designed course that has been owned by Marple Township since the late 60s. By holding numerous amateur and professional tournaments over the past 50 years, this local club has enriched the golf tradition in Delaware County. PHCC is also home to a men's league that plays every Sunday, and has the largest ladies’ golf league in Philadelphia, with over 160 members.
PHCC opened in 1926 as a private club and since then it has had various owners throughout the years. In 1967 Marple Township purchased the club from Delaware County builder Ralph Bodek, who renovated it and changed it to a public facility. This past Spring the township began major improvements to the club, which include changes to the first three holes of the golf course as well the addition of a full-scale driving range. The renovation will also include a new golf operations facility that
will be built directly adjacent to the first tee. “The new building will include the golf shop, men’s and women's restrooms, a snack bar with patio and below-ground cart storage,” explained Dan Malley, the Director of Golf Operations for PHCC. “These renovations will have a huge impact on the dayto-day enjoyment of a course." Dan also noted that the club will remain open while construction is going on.
Golfers who enjoy a round of golf at PHCC can also enjoy a delicious Italian meal and views that overlook the greens, fairways and fountains on the 18th hole at Anthony’s at Paxon Restaurant and Patio Deck. “Having the restaurant here really adds to the ambiance,” added Dan. “It’s the perfect place to go for large groups after golf outings.” Anthony’s has also held many fundraisers that have helped raise money for people in the Marple community. “The restaurant has added value

to both the club and the community,” said Jon Walsh, Head Chef/Partner and General Manager of Anthony’s at Paxon.
Marple Township is also home to the headquarters of GAP (Golf Association of Philadelphia), the oldest state or regional golf association in the country. Founded in 1897, GAP now has nearly 100,000 members and 350 member clubs in the tri-state area. As a local voice of the United States Golf Association, their goal is to preserve golf’s values by sponsoring amateur tournaments and providing educational opportunities. One of those educational opportunities is the J.Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Trust — named for J. Wood Platt, who won six Philadelphia amateur championships and advocated for caddies. Applicants must be regular caddies or those working in golf operations. Last year, the Trust, GAP’s charitable arm, awarded $1.1 million in scholarships. The scholarship is more than just a financial reward, it also offers a resource base of contacts for students. GAP’s initiatives like the scholarship have created opportunities across the region and promoted the game of golf.
Having GAP right here in our hometown certainly brings some extra prestige to the Broomall area. GAP’s Assistant Communication Director Tony Regina said it has been an honor to be located here since 2009. “We’re proud to be headquartered in an area that features a breadth of golf facilities. The golf heart here beats as loudly as GAP’s, and that’s special,” he said.
For local new or seasoned golfers, there are plenty of private clubs in Delaware County to choose from including Aronimink, Rolling Green, Merion and Overbrook golf clubs. Whether you head to the driving range, practice greens, mini-golf or play a round of 18, many places offer discounts during the month of August so you can take advantage of the deals.
Now is the perfect time to embrace the challenge, appreciate the beauty, and relish the camaraderie that golf brings. Spread your love for the game even further by capturing the moment using #NationalGolfMonth to share on social media.
Publisher’s Note: Transparency may require I admit this: I am a golf dad! I have fond memories of Paxon Hollow Golf Course Pro, Dan Malley, giving golf lessons to my sons over twenty years ago. Dan, you are a Marple Township treasure. Thank you. And my personal thanks also to the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP). My #3 son, Jimmy Blaisse, is one of your J. Wood Platt Scholarship caddies from Rolling Green Golf Club. This is National Golf Month. To learn more about these two golf brands which tee up in Marple Township yet known by fans of golf from all over the Philadelphia area, visit www. PaxonHollowGolf.com and www.GAPGolf.org. M

Is Your Body Image Holding You Back from Working Out?
Do you ever think or say to yourself, “I’m not going to the gym or joining a fitness class until I lose some weight!”? If you have had negative thoughts about your body, you are not alone. Approximately 91% of women are unhappy with their body. These thoughts can be roadblocks
to taking the right steps to care for your body. While body image may act as a motivator to some, for others it can act as a barrier to exercising.
If you are anxious about going to the gym because of a negative body image, take inventory of all the ways that your body provides for you and functions properly. Are you able to walk, run, jump, eat, sleep and breathe? Then learn to appreciate all that your body does for you.
Are you the bully of your own body? People with a negative body image will frequently engage in negative body talk, saying things like “I’m so fat,” “I really need to lose weight,” and “I’m not going to wear certain clothes until I look thinner.” Focus on the non-superficial things.
Engage in positive body talk, like “I am strong” and “I care for and nurture my body.” Write out all the positive body statements you can think of and then place them around your home, office and in your car, so you are reminded throughout your day. Place post-it notes with positive statements on your mirrors so you are reminded to engage in positive body talk.
Understand what is real and what’s not. Filters, Photoshop, airbrushing and more create an unrealistic and unattainable standard that no one can meet. Don’t be fooled by what you see on social media. Instead, accept the idea that healthy and happy bodies come in all shapes and sizes. Isn’t it time to detox from the social media influencers that negatively impact your body image?
Treat your body with respect. Avoid negative body talk and focus instead on all the things your body does for you. Celebrate those positive qualities, skills and interests that you have as a person rather than focusing on appearance-related qualities. In the end, your body exists for you, not for other people.
Your body is not to be viewed, judged or criticized by anyone, even you. M

In the 4th of July Parade!
by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of the 4th of July Parade Committee
The 2023 Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade was one for the record books! The weather was perfect, the streets were packed with patriotic spectators, and the excitement in the air was electric.
Praise and thanks to the Parade Committee flooded their Facebook page just minutes after the conclusion. Words used to describe the event were “spectacular,” “amazing,” “so much fun,” and “absolutely perfect.”
This year’s parade Grand Marshal was The Broomall Fire Company which celebrated 100 years of volunteer service on January 8, 2023. Fire Company President Jim Capuzzi rode in the Grand Marshal convertible along the parade route, followed by the fire company’s dedicated members who marched in full dress uniform with the Brian Boru Irish Bagpipes and Drums Band.
The parade would also not be possible without generous sponsors who place ads in the parade book and those who make direct donations. The committee would like to recognize the following Star Spangled Donors: Republic Bank, The Original Thunderbird Steakhouse and Catering and a donation in memory of Larry and Dee Spillman, long-time Newtown Square residents who loved spending the 4th of July holiday along the parade route with their daughters, Lori Martin and Kristine Adams and their families.
Spectators were entertained by marching bands such as Mersey-British Rock Invasion and the Spirit of Slim 76. And returning to the parade this year was The Marching Cobras Drumline and Danceline from New York. The Eagle Prep Band got the crowd up on their feet and our community marching bands, fire companies and first responders joined in the fun.
Local businesses, community clubs and neighborhood residents did not disappoint with their decorated floats and marching groups. But it was the little ones who stole the show with their creative and festively decorated strollers, wagons, hand-drawn floats and bikes. The award for Best of Parade was Newtown Township Republican Party whose decorated float earned them the largest trophy of the day.
The parade ended with a celebration of our great country. Volunteers were on hand to serve pretzels and water. The crowd gathered to listen to The Marple Newtown Community Band play our National Anthem, after which the awards ceremony began. Medals and trophies were given to the top three entries in each division, and their names and photos will be featured in the 2024 parade commemorative book.

The Return of Pints in the Square Invite
Your Friends Saturday, Sept. 16th
The annual Pints in the Square Craft Brew Fest and 5K will be here soon! The “Pints” committee of the Newtown Square Fire Company is excited to announce that the 6th annual celebration of local craft brewing, food vendors and live music will happen on Saturday, September 16th at Delaware County Veterans Memorial, 4599 West Chester Pike Newtown Square.
Pints in the Square was co-founded by Rick Thompson, Sponsor of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine and owner of Thompson Custom Painting. The idea for this event occurred to him after he attended a beer festival in a neighboring town. He pitched the idea to some friends, and they got to work. Rick’s wife Bridget, a runner, loved the idea, too, and suggested including a 5K to start the day.
bikes or rollerblades will be permitted along the route. Everyone will need to sign a waiver, and anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian sign.
The celebration at the finish line continues when you head over to the Brew Fest from 12 – 4pm. This portion of the afternoon is an age 21+ event, and everyone entering will be required to present a valid government-issued ID. All Brew Fest participants will receive a tasting glass, entrance to the festival with unlimited tastings, live music, and access to purchase food from local vendors. There will be an impressive selection of over 50 craft beers from a wide range of local and regional craft breweries.
You can register for the 5k and get your tickets for the Brew Fest online at www.PintsInTheSquare.com. Tickets can either be for the 5K and the Brew Fest ($80); for the 5K only ($35); or for the Brew Fest only ($55). This year, designated drivers can purchase discounted tickets to the Brew Fest for just $10 or for the 5K and Brew Fest for $40. Pints in the Square is a rain-or-shine event, so keep an eye on the weather and plan accordingly.
It didn’t take long for Pints in the Square to become the talk of the town. In its first year alone, the festival drew over 500 attendees. It had been determined that this yearly event would benefit the volunteer Newtown Square Fire Company, a 501(c)3 organization. Between ticket sales, vendors and event sponsorships, they raised an impressive $25,000 in donations. The amount of money raised and visitors attending this year’s Brew Fest is expected to keep multiplying just as the 2023 event committee has grown to 15+ dedicated members from the fire company and beyond.
The event kicks off at 11am with a chip-timed 5K run that is open to all ages. Registration is required. Those who engage in the event will receive a participation medal. Participants who register by the deadline will receive an event T-shirt. No
The “Pints” committee eagerly welcomes event volunteers and event sponsors. If interested in volunteering, send an email to Info@PintsInTheSquare.com. For businesses and individuals who would like to help sponsor the event, send an email to Sponsors@PintsInTheSquare.com. Get a Jump on Setting Up Your Holiday Display
Today the choices for lights, ornaments, animated characters and holiday displays are endless and can satisfy any curiosity and desire for holiday cheer. Whether you are just starting out with your first display or you are a longtime display artist, always check the products for the UL listing. Follow all safety instructions carefully, making sure not to overload the sets of lights and the receptacle you are plugging them into. Be sure that your outdoor receptacles are GFCI protected. Test all GFI receptacles for proper operation by pressing the test button and the reset button. If you don’t have an outdoor receptacle accessible for your lighting project, it may be time to call in a professional.
Never run cords through windows for any type of lighting display. If the GFI receptacle fails to reset, don’t use that receptacle and contact a professional. You need to ensure that all of your exterior receptacles have a weatherproof “bubble-style” cover that closes when the cord is installed and plugged in, to keep water away from the outlet.
If the exterior receptacle does not have a weatherproof “bubble-style” cover, contact a professional to install one or more. When using extension cords for your holiday lighting, be sure they are weather-rated and safe from tears, cracks and breaks. Don’t use plastic bags, plastic tape, rubber tape, duct tape or any kind of tape as a temporary repair to extension cords. Discard and replace with new safe cords.
Electrical timers are a great added feature to your holiday lighting system. Many home stores have weatherproof timer setups included with their weatherproof cords and plugs. Timers are a great feature to keep you from having to go out into the bad weather to turn lights on and off.
Holiday light displays can be very festive and increase holiday cheer. Being safe and smart with your lighting systems is an important thing to remember, in order to keep the holiday safe and cheerful. It’s never too early to start your planning and purchasing process. The holidays will be here before we know it! M

Marple High School
by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of the Marple Historical Society
Along-time Marple resident donated several old high school diplomas to the Historical Society last week, one for Marple school and one for Newtown. Neither of the schools was a “Marple-Newtown” school because that idea was realized several years later.
Iona W. Dickinson graduated from the Marple School on May 28, 1909. There were 108 pupils in the whole of Marple, and most of them went to school at Marple Seminary No. 1, a 2-story building at the corner of Marple Road and Church Lane, now the Marple Little League parking lot. The school was two stories; the lower school children were taught on the first floor, while the upper school students learned upstairs. Teaching was spread out among four teachers, who earned between $50 and $55 per month.
and Newtown, and offered his property as the location for the new school. His idea and his offer were accepted, and on the Thomas farm (now the Gauntlett Center), the first Marple Newtown High School was constructed and opened in 1914. We’ve been together ever since.
And what happened to our graduate? I have not been able to find a trace of her. In fact, I am not certain of her first name: Iona and Lona were my best guesses, and I searched for both, without success. I checked every Dickinson family in Marple in the 1900 and 1910 censuses but did not find a name that could be our graduate. If you see her, let her know I am looking for her!
Miss Dickinson’s diploma noted her studies in orthography, reading, penmanship, arithmetic, geography, history, grammar, physiology and hygiene. The whole Marple graduating class of 1909 was likely less than 10 students. In nearby Newtown, also a small farming community, the story was the same. Their high school-aged students attended a red brick schoolhouse on Rt 252 with all of the other grades within walking distance of that school. In that building of three rooms, three teachers taught ten grades, including a two-year high school curriculum.
The doctor who served both communities, Dr. John G. Thomas, had an estate on West Chester Pike, halfway between the two existing schools. He was also the long-time president of the Newtown school board, and very involved in the education of the children of the community. He proposed that the two communities combine to build one high school to serve Marple
