Love and marriage for most of us will be celebrated mid-month, on Valentine’s Day, February 14th which also requires some early forecast because this year Valentine’s Day is also Ash Wednesday. So Valentines: this year you might consider celebrating love Mardi Gras style, on Fat Tuesday, which arrives early this year, the day before Valentine’s Day on February 13th. Certainly, February is a very cool month. Perhaps this year I’ll get around to nominating the day after Valentine’s Day to be a new national day on February 15th – National Bringing People Together Day, to bring attention to the good of Bringing People Together. That is the motto and mission that you are contributing to right now by reading your hometown magazine in print or online at NewtownSquareMag.com. I know you are warming up to this last full winter month issue of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, which our Content Coordinator, Sheila Turner-Hilliard, Designer, Kim Cesati, our Expert Contributors and other guest writers have for you in this new issue, that is Bringing People Together in Newtown Square.

Bob Blaisse Dear Residents,

February 2024

Fr ie nd s & Ne ig hb

Many years ago the Leap Day coming at the end of this month was known as “Ladies Day” or “Sadie Hawkins Day,” allowing for the rarest of accepted exceptions in those old days, when only that day, every four years, a woman could propose marriage to her man. That day is coming soon this year, but according to another bit of Leap Year folklore, in a Leap Year, the weather will always change on Fridays. So if that Sadie Hawkins Day proposal comes out this year, be mindful that the very next day after Leap Year Day is a Friday, and the forecast could change!

ON THE COVER The Grace Family at the Ballroom at Ellis Preserve Together Bring ing People

We know February is a great month when the first day of February begins with National Get Up Day, followed by Groundhog Day on February 2nd. We find out then if we’ll have another six weeks of winter if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, but regardless, this year February brings one extra day of winter guaranteed: that one extra day that only comes every four years – Leap Year Day, February 29th.

Oh February, you’re the longest-shortest month of the year! While we’re all looking forward to fresh air and flowers, I hope you’ll take some time to slow down and feel the warmth and love around you. Perhaps we’ll even get a few snowy days and cozy nights by the fireplace, too. We have several fun and interesting stories to share! First, you’ll meet The Grace Family, whose hearts, home and suitcases are filled with lots of love this Valentine’s Day. This month, we also took some time to check in with Sean O’Donnell, who was featured in our September 2020 issue. Sean’s path may not have been what he had planned, but he has turned his life’s mission into helping others discover their own feeling of freedom. Finally, be sure to check out our Business Profile, which highlights The CP Welde Group. Their team is committed to creating tax-efficient financial plans that help you retire with confidence. We are looking for more Newtown Square families, individuals and nonprofit organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

Resident Feature by Holly Stupak Photos courtesy of Mary Grace

Mary and Jeff Grace

The Grace Family:

Here, There and Everywhere Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors is pleased to introduce you to the Grace Family, a family that takes advantage of every opportunity and adventure. Sometimes that adventure means jetting off to Disney World, just for the day! Mary and Jeff Grace have lived in Newtown Square for 20 years, but Mary’s roots here go back even further. After living here her whole life, she’s now raising the fifth generation of Newtown Square residents. First, her great-grandparents moved here when they were young to raise their families and they started a long line of Marple Newtown High School (MNHS) grads. Not only is Mary an MNHS alum, her grandparents, mother, brother and her daughter Morgan are all proud graduates. Now her two sons Gage and Cole are students there! While Mary was a student at MNHS, she played softball and volleyball and was a member of the drama club. After high school, she worked for her family’s business Irving Miller Real Estate, which was started by her grandfather in 1946. It was soon after that that she found a job that truly captured her heart. Eleven years ago Mary founded her own travel agency called Mad Hatter Adventures Travel Company. As a travel specialist, Mary helps clients plan vacations all over the world. “I absolutely love my job,” she said. “I am one of those people who loves to go to work. 6

Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors

February 2024

I love talking about travel, hearing about people's travel plans and of course, I love to travel too!” Mary travels at least once a month, giving her the opportunity to visit new destinations. “Having new experiences all over the world has been truly an amazing perk to my job,” she added. Mary also has big plans this year to grow the business and they’re even launching a travel podcast. Born in Washington D.C., Mary's husband Jeff is the only family member not originally from Newtown Square. Jeff and his parents and two brothers eventually moved from D.C. to Norristown, where Jeff attended high school. After graduating from Norristown High School, Jeff went on to the University of Maryland. Today, Jeff works in Information Systems for Worthington Armstrong Venture in Malvern, a worldwide leader in ceiling systems. About five years ago, Jeff also started a company called Morganfly that does laser engraving, embroidery and screen printing. “It all started when Mary wanted her travel agency logo put on merchandise,” explained Jeff. “I made the first product for her, and when some of her travel colleagues saw her images on social media, they wanted their own items. The business took off!” Back in 2004, Jeff and Mary met at a wedding and hit it off instantly. In fact, they hit it off so well, they married after just 30 days of knowing each other. A month after they met, the couple

was at a party and decided “Let’s get married!” So they eloped! Six months later, Mary and Jeff held a big celebration in Ocean City, MD, and invited all of their friends and family. “At the time I was a single mom to my daughter Morgan,” said Mary. “I felt so blessed and lucky to have found Jeff to share our lives with.” Now, 20 years later, they are looking forward to celebrating this milestone anniversary this year! The couple found their first home in Broomall before eventually moving over to Newtown Square. It was the perfect house in a great neighborhood behind St. Anastasia Parish and they’ve been there ever since. “We love the neighborhood, we love the school district and best of all, we can walk to my mom’s house,” said Mary. After 20 years here, some of their neighbors have even become their second family. “We sadly lost our neighbor Bea Colangelo a few years ago and we have joined our families to spend our holidays together. Bea’s three children are like cousins to our children.” Mary and Jeff have found Newtown Square to be the perfect place to raise their three children. Their oldest, Mary Morgan is now 23. Technically she’s Mary the 4th, but she goes by Morgan. A 2018 graduate of MNHS, she was a proud member of the Color Guard. After high school, she earned a degree in Biochemistry from Widener University. Today she can be found working at the University of Pennsylvania in research. It’s been an exciting time for Morgan as this past December she married Andrew, her college best friend. A beautiful celebration was held at the Ballroom at Ellis Preserve that included plenty of family and many of their friends and neighbors like the Colangelos. The Graces are excited to welcome Andrew into the family, another Widener grad, who now also works at the University of Pennsylvania. “Andrew and Morgan make an adorable couple who love to be outdoors and to travel,” said Mary. “And lucky for us they moved right down the road to Broomall!” Mary and Jeff also have two sons Jeffrey Gage (Gage) and Cole. Gage is a kindhearted 17-year-old and a junior at MNHS. He’s active in the MN Drama program and recently starred in their production of Puffs. Gage began his acting and performing career in the school district's theater department in fourth grade and he has participated in every production since. “Gage is a kind young man,” said Mary. “He would do anything for you.” Someday Gage hopes to be a voice actor. His younger brother Cole is a freshman at MNHS. Cole is a bit more reserved, that is until you get to know him. Cole is also in the MN Drama program and is excited to perform in their upcoming production of Mamma Mia! Last but not least, the Grace family rescued three cats during the pandemic: Bravo, Echo and Tango. They’ve been a welcome addition to the family. When it comes to things to do in their spare time, for the Graces it’s travel, travel and more travel! “We often take a DAY trip to Florida to go to either Disney or Universal,” said Mary. “It's become quite talked about. We fly down in the morning and home in the evening and get a full day in a park.” They also take a cruise every Thanksgiving to spend time together before the rush of the holidays. Mary went on a solo trip recently to Alaska and had the opportunity to take a very small plane and land on the Continued on page 8

Resident Feature Ruth Glacier right next to Denali. Next up is a trip for Jeff and Mary to cruise around Italy, focusing on Sicily and then heading to Croatia before ending in Venice. If Mary’s mom isn’t taking care of the kids while Jeff and Mary are away, she’s accompanying them on their latest adventure. “We are so lucky to have her only eight houses away,” Mary said. “She also makes a great travel companion. We’ve taken a few amazing mother/daughter trips.”

They also love supporting the MN Drama program. No matter where else they’ve been, nothing can compare to a place where they have such deep roots. “Newtown Square is an incredible community,” said Mary. “We pull together when we need each other the most. I am proud to live here and support our village!” Thank you Grace family for sharing your story with Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. We look forward to hearing about your next adventure!

The CP Welde Group

Safe & Liquid

Add The Bucket Plan® to Your Bucket List What is The Bucket Plan®? The Bucket Plan® is a holistic financial planning process that incorporates all your assets into one comprehensive financial plan. It categorizes assets based on income, time horizon and tax qualifications. The key to a successful bucket plan is strategically positioning your assets into three distinct buckets: NOW, SOON and LATER. NOW Bucket This is the safe and liquid money that you keep in a checking, savings or money market account. The NOW bucket contains easily accessible funds for both planned and unexpected expenses, such as an auto purchase, home repairs and an emergency fund. This bucket achieves minimal returns that likely will not keep pace with inflation. You don’t want to have more money than necessary in your NOW bucket. SOON Bucket The SOON bucket contains the money you will use sooner rather than later so it should be invested for conservative growth. This bucket helps address two of your biggest risks in retirement: inflation and short-term market volatility. By investing conservatively,

you avoid the risk of taking out money at a market low. The SOON bucket should not be exposed to extreme market fluctuations. LATER Bucket The LATER bucket is designed for long-term growth. Since we have strategically positioned money conservatively in the SOON bucket, we now have the confidence to invest in long-term, growth-oriented investments in your LATER bucket. This bucket also provides opportunities to address long-term care, tax management and legacy planning. A common misconception is that legacy planning is “just for the kids.” However, legacy planning is critical for a surviving spouse. Going from married to single tax brackets, having your standard deduction cut in half, losing one of two Social Security checks, with a potential decrease in pension benefits, could result in taxes going up and income going down for a surviving spouse. The Bucket Plan® is a way to holistically structure your assets to tackle today’s market challenges while meeting your current, short-term and long-term goals. Why not make it your New Year’s resolution to add The Bucket Plan® to your bucket list? NS

Lower Cost, Less Time Flooring Upgrades If you’re looking to upgrade your flooring on a budget and with minimal time investment, there are several cost-effective options that can make a significant difference in the look and feel of your space. Here are some suggestions:

2. Vinyl Peel-and-Stick Flooring: Vinyl tiles that adhere to the existing floor are a quick and affordable way to change the flooring. They come in various styles, including wood and tile patterns, and are relatively easy to install.

1. Area Rugs: Large area rugs can add warmth, color and texture to a room without the need for a full flooring overhaul. They are also easily interchangeable if you want to update the look periodically.

3. Laminate Flooring: Laminate flooring is an affordable alternative to hardwood and can be installed as a floating floor, which means it doesn’t need to be glued or nailed down. Some laminate options mimic the look of natural wood or stone.

NEWTOWN SQUARE’S FLOOR COVERING EXPERTS

4. Painted Floors: If you have wooden floors, consider painting them for a fresh look. You can use stencils to create patterns or go for a solid color. Make sure to use floor-specific paint and finish with a protective sealer. 5. Peel-and-Stick Carpet Tiles: Similar to vinyl tiles, carpet tiles are easy to install and can be a great solution for adding warmth and comfort to a room. They come in various colors and patterns.

4,000 sq. ft. Showroom

6. Refinish Hardwood Floors: If you already have hardwood floors, consider refinishing them instead of replacing them. Sanding and applying a new stain or finish can give your floors a brand-new appearance. 7. Epoxy Coating for Concrete Floors: If you have concrete floors, epoxy coatings can transform them into a sleek and durable surface. Epoxy is resistant to stains, easy to clean and comes in various colors and finishes. 8. Cork Flooring: Cork is an eco-friendly and budget-friendly flooring option. It’s soft underfoot, has natural insulation properties and comes in a variety of styles and colors.

9. Self-Adhesive Floor Tiles: These tiles are easy to install and can be used in various rooms, such as the kitchen or bathroom. They come in different patterns and mimic the look of more expensive materials. 10. DIY Stenciled Concrete: If you have a concrete floor, you can use stencils and paint to create patterns or designs. This is a cost-effective way to add visual interest to your floors. Before starting any flooring project, make sure to properly prepare the existing surface and follow installation instructions for the chosen material. Always consider your specific needs, preferences and the functionality of the space when selecting a flooring upgrade. NS

The Circular Economy While not a new concept, you may not have heard of the term Circular Economy. The mission of a circular economy is to find a beneficial reuse for material, thereby eliminating waste. It’s all about sharing, reusing, refurbishing/repairing and recycling products so these resources continue circulating right back into the community they are generated from, to be used again. It’s a wonderful concept that we are all aware of, but sometimes in practice, it’s more difficult to achieve than you might anticipate.

We aren’t speaking about aluminum cans and plastic bottles here, but larger, perhaps more specialized items that can’t be put into your weekly recycling bin. While most of us have good intentions, sometimes life gets in the way and we aren’t able to follow through due to the time needed to research every item. To that end, here is an easy reference guide to assist in finding the right place to send the specific hard-to-recycle item. We hope you find it helpful and put it to good use!

Business Profile by Holly Stupak Photos courtesy of Charles Welde

Helping Clients Reach Their Financial Goals Most of us could benefit from financial guidance. Today’s financial landscape demands a smarter approach to wealth management beyond simply “investing wisely.” In a world that is market-focused and performance-driven, a holistic financial plan could help you retire with confidence and leave a legacy to heirs. The CP Welde Group provides the following services to ensure each aspect of your wealth is organized: retirement planning, portfolio management, asset protection and legacy planning.

Charles Welde

Charles Welde grew up in Havertown in a twin home with his parents and 10 brothers and sisters. “We were a competitive set of siblings,” said Charles. “With only one bathroom for 13 people, a competitive spirit was bred early on!” He graduated from Cardinal O’Hara where he played varsity basketball and baseball before earning his accounting degree from Villanova University. After spending 15 years working 60-hour weeks as a Certified Public Accountant, Charles fell in love with financial planning in the mid-90s. This transition was entirely organic as he was solid with numbers and great with people. In 2001, he became a Certified Financial Planner. Having a rewarding professional career would not have been possible without the support of his wife, Peg. “I'm grateful for Peg who never stopped believing in me,” he said. You can’t teach passion!” What sets The CP Welde Group apart from other financial firms are two proven processes: The Bucket Plan® strategically categorizes assets into three distinct buckets: now, soon and later based on income, time horizon and tax qualifications. The Tax Management Journey ® strategically allocates investments into three distinct funnels: pre-tax, post-tax and tax advantaged. Tax management can be far more valuable than tax preparation or tax planning since not all money is taxed the same. Valentine’s Day Is Bringing People Together. But Reader Leaders Are Doing That Every Day! Jean, Be My Valentine again this Valentine’s Day. And thank you for letting me be your Valentine these many years. But like those early grade school years, when we gave out Valentine’s Day cards to our classmates, and held out the cards we thought nicest, for those we wanted to really show our appreciation of, I have to tell our Reader Leaders just how special they are to us. Who are our Reader Leaders? What is a Reader Leader? It all started when we launched Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors in print and online at NewtownSquareMag.com over five years ago. A Reader Leader started out simply as any reader who let

But after a few years of impact in our community, Reader Leaders got to another level. They fully understood how our unique brand of social-media-in-print was truly Bringing People Together in Newtown Square. And with bold loyal gratitude for their hometown magazine, Reader Leaders happily voted with their wallets to show outright favoritism for businesses whose ads are seen on these pages. And our Sponsors do it to show us just how important the residents of Newtown Square are to the success of their business. Reader Leaders return that loyalty. Now in our sixth year of publication, Reader Leaders are too many to count among our Newtown Square friends and neighbors and loyal readers with pride of living in Newtown Square. And this month, Reader Leaders are our Valentines. We truly appreciate you. We value your support every month, and your contribution to every new issue of your hometown magazine. People often ask me how we choose our Newtown Square resident cover feature, or who will be our Student of the Month, or how we came by that feel-good story that cannot be easily forgotten after reading it in the hometown magazine. I tell those who ask that it all comes from Readers Leaders, through their emails. That’s the start of it, and results in a feature ending up in print and online in a new issue that serves to be Bringing People Together in Newtown Square.

Our Community by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Delco Storm & Sewer Services

Our Newtown Township

Municipal Authority

In recent years, our community has undergone many changes. From the development of the Ellis Preserve to the widening of our roadways and our first-ever chain hotel, there is no doubt that Newtown Square is becoming the place to stop, shop and stay. And though sometimes it seems as though these changes happen overnight, they are the result of countless hours, days, months and even years of studying, planning, meeting and budgeting before the work ever begins. And often, improvements to our neighborhoods require multiple agencies and governing authorities to work together, as in the case of our sewer authority. The Newtown Township Municipal Authority (NTMA) is a five-member board organized to construct or otherwise provide the facilities necessary to furnish sewage disposal in Newtown Township. The Board oversees new sewer projects within the Township and helps to facilitate hooking up to the sewer system for residents. The NTMA also plans for future projects in the Township to update and improve our existing sewer systems.

and prevent future problems through the proper planning, permitting and design of sewer systems. To meet this objective, the Act required the identification and documentation of the sewage disposal needs in each municipality as well as proper planning in all types of sewage disposal situations. Newtown Square resident Mike Sheridan served as NTMA’s Solicitor for over two decades. He explained that back in 2011, the township was beginning to explore the possible future development of large parcels of land for residential and commercial use. “In addition to needing to provide and accommodate adequate sewer services for new development, we also considered what would be necessary to connect the many homes in neighborhoods with on-site septic systems.” “Aside from the cost of maintaining and replacing an on-site septic system, connecting to the public sewer system is better for the environment,” explained Dave Hochberg, Newtown Square resident and Co-Owner of Delco Storm & Sewer Services. “When a septic system fails, it can leak into the soil on your property and contaminate the groundwater that leads to streams, creeks and rivers.” Dave’s partner, John Ettore added that public sewers are better for the simple fact that the sewage is treated at a plant that follows the mandates set by the PA Department of Environmental Protection and the US Environmental Protection Agency.

If a property sits below the main sewer line, a grinder pump is installed

First established in 1961, the NTMA was formed under the Municipality Authorities Act of 1945. The act allowed the formation of Authorities, separate from the municipal government, to authorize, acquire, construct, finance, improve, maintain and operate projects. Because they are a separate legal entity, they are also able to borrow money, make loans and issue bonds for community improvements and expansions. On January 24, 1966, the Pennsylvania Sewage Facilities Act (Act 537) was enacted to correct existing sewage disposal problems 18

Maria Kane serves as NTMA’s Chairman. She is an Attorney with McKenna Snyder, LLC, and has served on the municipal authority for over five years. Maria said that after the 537 Plan was amended in 2012 to include the new growth projections, Mike and NTMA members worked to obtain easements from property owners and cooperation from neighboring municipalities to connect new sewer lines with existing ones. “The majority of our wastewater is treated at a facility in Chester, PA,” Maria said. “In order for us to move forward with any type of development in the township, we needed to gain permission and have access to the lines that run through the townships from here to Chester.” The NTMA’s engineering firm, Herbert E. MacCombie Engineers, worked with land owners and developers to calculate estimates of future wastewater usage, and data was collected for the neighborhoods with failing septic systems. “We moved forward intending to attain the capacity to send one million gallons of wastewater to the treatment facility in Chester,” Mike explained. “It wasn’t

At the same time, area businesses with on-site septic systems began tapping in and converting to public sewers. The entire Campus Boulevard business district and those on West Chester Pike heading toward Edgmont made these improvements, and all new housing developments and business complexes were required to hook up to public sewer.

eptic cesspool decommissioned

These days, Maria said that the NTMA is working on educating residents about the process, costs and future plans. “We are planning on putting more information on the township website, including a list of frequently asked questions and easy-to-download forms,” she said. Maria also encourages residents who want to learn more to attend their monthly meetings at 7pm on the third Monday of each month. The meetings are held at Newtown Township Municipal Building, 209 Bishop Hollow Rd, Newtown Square and may be viewed through YouTube on the Newtown Township Delaware County channel. For more information, visit their website NewtownTownship.org under the Government tab.

without resistance from townships who feared that our needs would overwhelm their lines, but eventually, we were able to get the access and capacity we needed.” Once the agreements were signed and sealed, work began on engineering plans and funding. Homeowners in neighborhoods such as Echo Valley and Florida Park were informed that public sewer lines would be installed, and residents would be required to “tap in” to the line and pay a one-time fee for doing so. After tapping in, homeowners were allowed to use the company of their choice to run the sewer line from the tap-in point into their home.

While this feature story provides us with some valuable information about how our Municipal Authority operates, it only scratches the surface of the amount of work that goes into planning and implementing new and ongoing projects. Next month, we will further our discussion to include more details from experts John Ettore and Dave Hochberg of Delco Storm & Sewer Services about the process of installing sewers, decommissioning septic systems and maintaining sewer lines. We will also look to our NTMA members and engineers to help us better understand how sewer fees are calculated and how these fees are allocated. NS

Congrats Coach Kevin Merchant! MNHS Boys Lacrosse Coach Honored as PIAA Coach of the Year Not only did the boys’ Lacrosse team have a perfect ending to their 2023 season with a State Championship win, but their coach also received the honor of being the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Coach of the Year. For head coach Kevin Merchant, a Marple native and former Marple Newtown High School (MNHS) lacrosse player, the award was humbling. “It’s truly a collective award,” said Kevin. “I share it with the rest of the coaching staff and the players. They’re a phenomenal group of men.” In June 2023, Kevin led the Tigers lacrosse team to their first state championship in school history, winning the PIAA Class 2A title. The game ended with an exciting 11-10 overtime win over Mars Area High School at Penn State’s Panzer Stadium. Kevin grew up in Marple with two brothers and attended Russell Elementary and Paxon Hollow Middle School before going to MNHS. Kevin said the Merchants were pretty much a soccer family before he picked up a lacrosse stick in seventh grade. “I was looking for something more fast-paced and a neighbor suggested lacrosse,” Kevin recalled. “Once you play, you’re hooked.” At Marple, Kevin played for coach Tom Hannum, the winningest coach in Marple's lacrosse history. “Tom always instilled in us a great work ethic and a winning culture,” he said. “We knew if we put the work in, we’d reap the rewards.”

About 10 years ago, Kevin was looking to introduce more youth in our area to the sport of lacrosse. So he and his friend and fellow Marple alum Jim Kostack started a Native Lacrosse Club. “It started as wanting a club for my own son (now a high school freshman) to play lacrosse in a fun and competitive environment,” said Kevin. “It gives kids a chance to try the sport of lacrosse at a young age and teaches them fundamentals. And, when kids try it, it’s hard not to fall in love with the sport.” Kevin took over as the MNHS head lacrosse coach in 2019 with a plan to build a team with local coaches and to work with the community. His coaching staff includes an impressive group of Marple alumni, including offense coaches Joe Kostack and Tyler Kostack, defense coaches Steve Viola and Kyle Barroni, faceoff and transition Jake Huey and Jim Small, who works with the team on strength and conditioning. “Our staff all have the same mentality,” said Kevin. “We love watching the players work hard and succeed both on and off the field.”

Kevin Merchant coaching the MNHS Boys Lacrosse Team

Kevin said that the successful 2023 season was due to the team’s dedication and teamwork. “We came in that season with a lot of younger players and not that many seniors,” he explained. “We certainly went through some rough spots and growing pains. But that was what made the ending to the season much more special.” Kevin said that what was even more unique about the team itself was the collaboration between the freshman and senior players. “Over the season they

were really able to figure out what roles they could play,” he said. The State Championship game could not have been a better and more exciting game with Ryan Gorman, an MNHS senior at the time, scoring with 2 seconds left to win it. During the game, the Marple Tigers had rallied dramatically, after falling behind 5-0 and 6-1 through the first quarter. Many of the underclassmen also played key roles. “Having core principles of commitment, discipline, respect, loyalty and hard work sets the team and players in a position to grow and improve every time they step on the field,” Kevin added. Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors congratulates Kevin, his coaching staff and his players on their PA State Championship win! We look forward to watching the team this year, which will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with. NS

Expert Contributor by Andrew Martella Martella Electric Company

Blinking/dimming Lights, Breakers Tripping, Something Not Working?

THE DOCTOR IS IN! When a storm is approaching, the lights in your home may flicker, blink or dim. Many times the power nearby has gone out, but even if your power stays on, dimming and flickering may still occur. Plus, there are other reasons why this may happen. Surges in your electrical system from appliances and equipment inside your home like refrigerators, sump pumps, hair dryers, washing machines, vacuum cleaners and heating and AC systems can be the cause. Occasional events are somewhat normal, however persistent and consistent dimming and blinking can be a signal that trouble might be brewing in your home's electrical system. Common causes for a circuit breaker to trip or a fuse to blow are hair dryers running with too many lights. This frequently happens in older homes particularly when more than one highpower appliance like a blow dryer is in use. When the outlet for the holiday lights turns off, this can be due to an overload or faulty lights. When using the vacuum and the lights go out there is likely to be an overload on the circuit. Power tools used in combination with lights can trigger the same result, just like when the microwave and coffee pot operate at the same time in the kitchen. It can be frustrating when what was working yesterday is not working today. The electrical system in your home is a spider web

maze of wires, boxes, switches, outlets and lights, any of which can fail at any time for seemingly no apparent reason. You may have one light in a group that simply doesn’t come on. The dimmer switch for a chandelier doesn’t dim the light anymore. The exterior light on the front door will not turn off. The sump pump trips the breaker or pops a fuse. Sometimes the switch or outlet makes a sizzling sound. Sometimes the plug doesn’t fit tightly into the wall socket. All these situations can be puzzling, frustrating and concerning to homeowners. The electrical systems in our homes can be complicated. They are safe and reliable for the most part, however when the conditions mentioned above present themselves, calling on a licensed, professional electrical contractor to investigate can make all the difference in keeping you, your family and your home safe, comfortable and secure. Cases like this first require a DIAGNOSIS, much like going to your doctor when you have an ailment. Many times, the diagnosis can take longer to complete than the actual repair, replacement or procedure. However, the diagnosis is crucial to fixing the issue, followed by the RECOMMENDED REPAIR, just like when your doctor prescribes medication and/or a procedure after the diagnosis is made. NS

Tree Inspection and Maintenance Trees make a true statement when placed at key areas around the home. The question many homeowners ask — especially if they’ve inherited a yard with many and various types of trees — is when is it time to perform tree maintenance, and what are specific ways to maintain particular types of trees? To get those answers, first ask yourself these basic questions: • Do the trees on my property present broken limbs that could be dead or diseased? • Do my trees encroach on my house, on my neighbor’s prop erty or house, on power lines, or on sidewalk areas? • Are my trees misshapen from overgrowth? • Do my trees reduce the aesthetic value of my property?

Founded in 1976 by a group of local business people, the NSBA is governed by the constitution and by-laws formed in 1983, and officers are elected annually. The NSBA is a proud sponsor of Newtown Square’s annual tree lighting ceremony and partners with the Gather in the Circle committee to participate in and promote the Newtown Square Farmers Market and the Circle at Sundown community festival. NSBA’s recent work promotes sustainability by endorsing the Environmental Advisory Council and encouraging local businesses to join the Newtown Square Green Business Coalition. They also present a Streetscape Award annually to a business that creates a colorful, eye-catching display of plants and flowers that lasts throughout the summer. Most recently, the association focused on ways to keep small businesses thriving, especially as they rebound and rebuild from the pandemic. They wanted to make an impactful statement encouraging residents and those who drive through our town to stop and shop here. They created a Shop the Square banner campaign that has been extremely successful and helped earn them the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce’s 2023 Best Business Association award. In addition to the Shop the Square project, board members have boosted their commitment to promoting their members’ businesses by introducing social networking happy hours for business owners and consistent social media campaigns designed to build community excitement and dedication to shopping locally. Over the past few years, Newtown Township has experienced unprecedented growth in the number of businesses and residents, so working with Newtown Township officials is paramount. In an effort to educate our business community on plans and changes happening, the NSBA hosts an annual State of the Township breakfast meeting that allows our police chief, township manager and township supervisor the opportunity to provide timely and accurate information and field questions from members. 26

Sheila Turner-Hilliard, President Sheila joined the NSBA as a member 20 years ago when she opened From the Top Studio of Dance. She was elected Director three years ago and Vice President in 2023. “I am excited to announce that I will now serve as President in 2024,” she explained. “As a lifelong Newtown Square resident and successful business owner, I want to keep Newtown Square’s businesses and local events thriving. I would love to hear ideas and suggestions from you, local business owners and our community leaders.” Paul Seligson, Vice President Paul is a long-time volunteer for many of Newtown Square’s community groups. “In 2008, I was developing a hanging basket program when I heard of Dick Pound, who was President of NSBA,” Paul said. “I called him, and he invited me to present to the Board of NSBA. That meeting led to a letter of endorsement and a $2,000 check to get us started.” Paul was then invited to join the Board, and when Dick retired in 2015, he threw his hat in the ring for President, serving until 2023. “I have enjoyed eight years at the helm and am extremely happy to see Sheila Turner-Hilliard take over the reins so capably.” Rich Crowe, Secretary Rich is the secretary for the NSBA. This is his fourth period serving on the NSBA board over the last 30-plus years. As publisher of Press Newspapers years ago, Rich felt it was, and still is, essential to have a strong business group representing our local merchants in Newtown Square. Paul Hostler, Treasurer Paul is NSBA’s newly elected Treasurer. “As a banker for over 40 years, I continue to be a lifelong learner who strives daily to educate others,” Paul explained. “I have been a member of NSBA for a year and joined to build an even better community and impact lives.” Brian McCollum, Director Brian founded McCollum Insurance in 2002. For over 20 years, McCollum Insurance has helped local business owners and families with their business and personal insurance needs. “I have been a member of the NSBA for close to four years,” he said. “I have met many business owners over the last few years in Newtown Square and enjoy hearing about and responding to the needs of local business owners while also offering the best insurance solutions.”

Ken Taylor, Director Ken has been with The Running Place since 2007 and has been the owner since 2012. Ken feels that joining the business association has allowed him to play a more active role in the community. “I have served on the board for over six years, with a small break during my daughter's early years,” Ken remarked. “I feel that being members of the business association enables us to make a positive mark in the neighborhoods where we live and work.” Jackie McCormick, Director “I joined the NSBA to actively engage with my neighbors,” explained Jackie. “As a Realtor and a resident raising a family here, I am committed to contributing to Newtown Square's improvement.” Jackie serves as both a Board member and Social Media manager, taking pride in positively impacting our community and assisting fellow business owners in their growth.

John Custer III, Solicitor John has served as NSBA’s Solicitor since 2019, providing legal support, advice and representation. “I am an attorney specializing in business law and estate planning and administration,” John said. “I grew up in this community and wanted to become more involved in local business.” On behalf of our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, we would like to thank the Board Members and business members of the Newtown Square Business Association for their steadfast commitment to our community. Publisher’s Note: I’m grateful our magazine Content Coordinator, Sheila Turner-Hilliard, has accepted leadership of our Newtown Square Business Association at the reccommendation of Newtown Township’s all-around, and all-year-round man of service, Paul Seligson. Thank you NSBA Board Members for your service to our Newtown Square community. NS

Monica Knauss, Director Monica is the Community Relations Coordinator at Dunwoody Village and has been on the NSBA Board for three years. She said, “Dunwoody Village has served Newtown Square and the surrounding area for 50 years as a continuing care retirement community (and as a convalescent home for 50 years before that), and it’s my pleasure to participate with other businesses in promoting all that Newtown Square has to offer.” Dane Shoemaker, Director Dane is the Owner/Operator of Shoemaker Films, LLC, based in Newtown Square. “I joined the NSBA in 2023 and shortly after that became a Director, " he explained. “As a local business, it was easy to join an award-winning group like the NSBA, filled with like-minded professionals to network, volunteer and promote my business.” Dane encourages others to join and said that between the happy hours and regular meetings, it is an excellent opportunity for businesses and a lot of fun, too! Anne Marie Hare, Director “I joined the association to help improve St. Albans Circle and connect with other businesses,” said Anne Marie, owner of Bunny Hare’s Boutique and Gift Shop. She is celebrating her 19th year in business in the “circle” and enjoys volunteering to support and promote a healthy local economy. “The more businesses in town, the better we all do.” Jack Crowley, Jr., Director Jack joined the Newtown Square Board of Directors in 2021. “The reason I joined is because I started a business in Newtown Square in 2013 and fell in love with the community,” he explained. “Newtown Square is unlike anywhere else, the community and its residents really go out of their way to shop and support local small businesses.” Jack added that he has formed lasting relationships with residents and other business owners and is proud to serve and be a part of our Newtown Square family. Recalling the Issue: September 2020

Sean O’Donnell, A Pilot’s Positive Outlook on Life

Over the past five years, Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors has featured many inspirational stories from our community. This month, we are excited to check back in with Sean O’Donnell, a pilot, Engineer, traveler, musician and motivational speaker. If you recall, Sean’s story first appeared in our September 2020 issue, and if you don’t, you can catch up by reading about his journey online at NewtownSquareMag.com. When we first featured Sean, he was living in Newtown Square but has since relocated to Naples, FL. “While I loved living in Newtown Square, I knew eventually I wanted to move south,” Sean explained. “When COVID hit, I decided I wanted to live somewhere warm, where I could be outside and enjoy my life.” So, he sold his home in Florida Park, packed his bags and found the perfect spot to build a home in Naples. Growing up, Sean was an active child who played piano and guitar, participated in group sports and discovered a passion for helping others through athletic training. But, on September 18, 1995, a few weeks after Sean started his Senior year in high school, he endured a life-changing injury: While riding his motorcycle home from school, he was hit by a distracted driver. Sean was thrown from his bike and landed on a rock and broke his back,

making him a T-4 Complete Paraplegic, which means he doesn’t feel anything from his chest down. “From day one in the hospital, my dad challenged me to get back to school before November 1,” said Sean. Precisely 42 days after his accident, Sean returned to high school and graduated with his class with a 3.8 GPA.

Sean then attended Villanova University’s College of Engineering, and graduated in 2000 with a degree in Computer Engineering. While in college, he raced wheelchairs semi-professionally. He also started doing some public speaking and was making an impact regarding accessibility on campus. “My neurosurgeon encouraged me to tell my story because people would see it as inspirational.” Over the past 25 years, Sean has been booked for over 500 speaking engagements. Sean said that since he was young, he felt “the flying spirit” in him. “After I saw The Right Stuff and Top Gun, I knew flying was something I wanted to do!” In 2005, when he was 27, Sean had the opportunity to ride with another Newtown Square resident, Dr. Bob McAndrew, in his Pitts S2B. Sean was hooked and immediately began researching how to get his pilot license. Due to his disability, he needed a plane with hand controls, specifically for the rudder inputs, which pilots usually control with their feet. “It was not an easy task because I could find only one plane with that type of design, the Sky Arrow,” recalled Sean. Soon after, he discovered Able Flight (AbleFlight.org), a nonprofit offering scholarships to people with disabilities to learn to fly the Sky Arrow. Sean applied and was granted a scholarship, and in June 2007, he began his training. On July 13, Sean soloed for the first time; ten days later, he became a licensed pilot. “I never worked harder at anything in my life, and nowhere had I ever found a more practical application of STEM that I had studied in school. It was magical watching science come to practical life!” exclaimed Sean.

Sean flying his Sky Arrow

Sean felt the need to give back to Able Flight for helping make his dreams come true, so he purchased his own Sky Arrow and made it available to the program so that others could train, thereby expanding the program and helping more people. “Nothing is more

important to me than giving someone like me, who dreams of flying but doesn’t know how to get there, the opportunity and mentorship to get it done.” He is now a spokesperson for Able Flight and serves on their advisory board. Since Sean received his scholarship, the program has awarded hundreds more scholarships and licensed more than 100 pilots with disabilities ranging from paralysis to amputees to those who are deaf. “Able Flight is growing, and we are actively raising funds to purchase two new planes,” Sean explained. “In addition to using aircraft, Able Flight provides scholarship recipients with an all-expense paid training experience including materials, lessons, transportation and housing.” Sean said that each scholarship costs $9,500. Able Flight currently awards seven scholarships yearly, but with more funding, they want to increase that to ten. Sean said life on the West Coast of Florida is treating him well. In addition to flying his Sky Arrow, he enjoys boating, fishing and taking helicopter rides with his girlfriend and their friends. “I love Naples,” he said. “It has that small town feel, and it’s peaceful and serene here.” Sean did say that he comes back to Newtown Square from time to time to visit his family and friends. “I enjoyed living in Newtown Square, but Naples is my home now, and I am truly living my dream.” NS

It’s All About the Brow Eyebrows are one of a person’s most prominent facial features and have many functions they perform. They help accentuate the eyes, shape the face and play a powerful role in communication. Beautifully groomed eyebrows are a lesser-known anti-aging secret. Eyebrows are one of the first things people notice when they look at you. Properly shaped brows give a lift to your face, making your eyes appear larger and more youthful. The right eyebrow shape can frame and flatter the eyes. The wrong one can make you look aged, tired or angry.

This process can take thin, sparse brows and give them fullness and shape. Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup process in which the pigment is implanted in the upper layers of your skin with a hand-held tool. Drawing hair-like strokes with the tool will mimic the natural hairs in your brow to create the desired fullness and shape for your eyebrows. There is also a numbing cream to help with any discomfort during your experience. The effects last up to 12 - 18 months, after which the pigment fades leaving your skin and your natural eyebrows exactly as they were. You can continue to get this done every year to maintain your eyebrow shape. NS

While you can’t change your face shape, you can modify your brows, which in effect will alter how your face shape appears. Current brow trends might play a role in the thickness of your brow. In the 90s thin was in! Now we know that was one big beauty mistake! Natural and bold eyebrows are still a major beauty trend. If you’re guilty of over-plucking your eyebrows, there’s a good chance you’re still paying the price today. Whether you have over-tweezed or have sparse and uneven eyebrows, there’s a technique that will whip them back in shape. Microblading!

Microblading is perfect for those who want to fully reconstruct, define, cover gaps or fill in over-plucked brows.

However, there is no one “right” eyebrow shape. Everyone is different, but you can establish the right eyebrow shape for YOU by examining your face, bone structure and eye shape. Eyebrows have the power to completely change the look of the face such as making small eyes appear larger or accentuating eyes that are far apart.

Enhancing Your Home’s Value: The Impact of Exterior Paint on Your Property One of the most commonly suggested home improvement actions from real estate professionals and home appraisers is to invest in professional home exterior painting. Having your house painted will not only cover faded or worn-down paint, but it will also enhance the appearance and appeal of the home. Paint has the power to update, improve and accentuate the unique architectural elements of your house, making it more visually appealing. The appearance and condition of the exterior of your home are some of the very first things noticed by guests or potential buyers if you’re in the market to sell. It will also be one of the first things noted in a home inspection and valued by a home appraiser. While it is clear that painting your home can improve its appeal and attraction, new exterior paint, and even just paint touchups, can increase the financial value of your home from 2-5%. Combined with an estimated return on investment of 51%, hiring a professional painter to revamp your home exterior can be a worthwhile investment. Help You Sell Your Home As potential buyers search for available homes, the first picture they see on an online listing is one of the home’s exterior. It is also

the first thing they see as they pull up for a showing. With such a tight and competitive real estate market, sellers are investing time and money in making improvements that will attract buyers. With a well-done paint job and the right colors, you may be able to sell your home sooner. Provide Protection High-quality paint on the exterior walls of your house will serve as one of your home’s primary lines of defense against weather, insects, heat and other damage. Chipped and peeling exterior paint makes your home susceptible to the effects of rain, snow, ice, frost or high humidity. Exposed cracks in the paint can trap moisture and damage the wood. Damaged wood can come in the form of cracking, flaking, rot and mildew and is an inviting place for termites. Painting your home in lighter colors can also deflect the damaging ultraviolet rays, extending the life of your paint job, while helping to cool down your house and save energy. If you are thinking about painting the exterior of your home, you’ll want to hire professionals. Painting your home requires a financial investment, but it can also be time-consuming to get it done right, so this is the time to hire a professional. NS

Governor Earle’s Crash Landing by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of the Newtown Square Historical Society

Last month I was sitting in an exam room at Main Line Health on the Ellis College campus when the building lost power. In the dark, I decided to meditate – closed my eyes and let my thoughts flow. effort to save his ship from exploding. And from 1935-39, he was the Governor of Pennsylvania. In 1938 the Governor started flying lessons and soloed in June. On July 20th, with just ten solo hours under his belt, he took off from Harrisburg, telling his instructor he was going up for practice. In fact, he had an appointment later that day in Philadelphia. He headed east but ran into thick fog over Essington where he had intended to land. He circled in the fog for 90 minutes looking for an opening, but with his gas getting low, he headed back to familiar turf in Newtown. Seeing open space, with the

motor sputtering, he dropped out of the soup and made a bumpy landing on the front lawn of Ellis College. He stuck the landing but the grass was wet, he could not brake in time and so the plane hit a small maple tree. “My safety belt saved me. It kept me from going right through the windshield,” he shared. Foxall MacElree and George H. Gray were driving by and witnessed the crash. They helped pry open the door and were surprised to see the Governor step out, with some sore parts but otherwise intact. He stopped at the nearby home of Mrs. E. Ruttan to call his wife and let her know he was safe. Then MacElree drove him to Philadelphia for his meeting. I could find no crash photos State Police descended on the scene and confiscated the film of everyone with a camera. I had heard about the crash years ago. Funny how my brain made that connection and led to this story. For more history on Newtown Square, Delaware County, and membership info, visit our website at NSHistory.org. NS
