In this first month of this new year, I invite every reader of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors to join our magazine staff and your Newtown Square friends and neighbors to sign on with a renewed resolution to more often say “Thank You.” That simple voluntary act of kindness nearly always brings a kind gesture or smile, and that cycle of goodwill will fuel our hope for a Happy New Year. I’ll start my January “Thank You” practice by first thanking YOU, as a faithful reader of our hometown magazine. Without your monthly choice to spend time reading our monthly social-media-in-print publication, the motto and mission of our hometown magazine, to be Bringing People Together, would not be fulfilled. You add to the purpose of your hometown magazine. In 2023 our magazine staff received many kind words about our publication, con-firming that our mission for the Newtown Square community is being fulfilled. Your compliments, while humbling, strengthen our magazine team’s resolve to overcome the challenges of each new issue before we send it off to the printer to then be mailed to your homes. If you’re a fan of Friends & Neighbors, you know what’s coming next. Correct! To all our advertising Sponsors, “Thank You” for making Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors possible in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. Your choice to use your limited marketing budget to produce our hometown publication shows Newtown Square residents they are important to the success of your business. And I trust our readers will offer their “Thank You” back by our choosing to do business with you first when possible in 2024. Happy New Year everyone! I know you’ll enjoy this great first issue of 2024 that our team has put together for us to enjoy. “Thank You, Sheila! Thank You, Kim! Thank You, Lisa!”

January is National “Thank You” Month, named so to suggest we start 2024 off with renewed daily efforts of that simple kindness that acknowledges the efforts people make to help us. Not only the people in our lives, but the service workers and strangers who help us yet we may never see or talk to again. It’s a noble New Year effort suggested: to exercise our expressions of gratitude as a personal habit to more often say “Thank You.”

Resident Feature by Sheila Turner-Hilliard

Bill and Marie Richards:

A Happy History In Newtown Square Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors is happy to usher in 2024 by introducing you to Bill and Marie Richards. The Richards love to call Newtown Square home in the Florida Park neighborhood that stands the test of time, not just in years but for generations of Marie’s family. Many of our friends and neighbors recognize Marie as Newtown Township’s Tax Collector – a position she has held for the past 24 years. What you may not know about her is that she is a lifelong Newtown Square resident who lives on the same parcel of land as her childhood home. “My father drove for The Red Arrow Lines of the Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Company back in the 1950s, which had him traveling from 69th Street in Upper Darby to West Chester every day,” she explained. “We moved to Florida Park when I was two years old, and I have been here ever since.” Marie said that she, her parents and her brother, Joe lived in a modest ranch home on three acres of land. “At the time, Newtown Township was horse country,” she explained. “Being a horse lover from an early age, my dad converted a detached garage on the property into a barn and stable, so I was able to have my own horse right outside my back door.” Marie attended St. Anastasia Grade School and graduated from Cardinal O’Hara High School. “I wasn’t involved in extracurricular activities in school because my life revolved around working at various jobs and caring for and riding my horse.” Marie said that her interest in finance and tax collecting began when she was offered an inheritance tax clerk opportunity for Delaware County. While there, she gained the experience and knowledge she needed to seek the position of Tax Collector for Newtown Township. Marie was appointed to fill a mid-term vacancy in 1999 and has successfully been elected for every term since. “I have always been civic-minded,” Marie said. “I was a member of the Newtown Square Rotary Club for 12 years and served as their treasurer and then President in 2012.” In addition, Marie has served as the treasurer for the Newtown Square PA Railroad Museum Association since 2012. “The museum is such a treasured piece of history in Drexel Lodge Park,” Marie said. “Together with the Newtown Square Historical Society, we have worked hard to raise the funds necessary to build the museum – which includes the original Red Arrow trolley that ran through Newtown Square in the 1940s and early 1950s, a 1902 passenger car, 1907 box car, 1950 caboose and a steam engine. 6

Marie’s husband, Bill, grew up in Clifton Heights with his parents and his brother Bob. He went to Primos Elementary School in Secane and graduated from Upper Darby High School, where he played soccer, baseball and basketball. After graduation, Bill started working as an apprentice for Joe Segal, the founder of the Franklin Mint. “I began working for Joe out of his garage, then transitioned over to the Franklin Mint when it opened in 1967,” Bill said. “I was a spray etch engraver, which means I would take a large epoxy template of a coin and reduce it down to its actual size.” Bill explained that at the same time the mint opened, the Vietnam War and the draft were underway. “I decided to enlist in the Army Reserves,” he said. “I served from 1967 until 1973.” While Bill

enjoyed working at the Franklin Mint for 35 years and planned to retire there, it closed its doors in 2002. “After the mint closed, I became a serviceman for Suburban Propane until my retirement in 2022,” he said. So how does a guy from Clifton Heights meet a girl from Newtown Square back in the 70s? It’s got to be a Delco thing, right? “Bill’s parents were good friends with my best friend, Peg’s parents,” Marie explained. “Peg and her family lived in the Newtown Heights section of Newtown Square, and I spent a lot of time at her house.” Marie said that she and Bill spent time together as teenagers but didn’t start dating until she graduated high school. “On our first date, Marie and I went to watch horse races at a track on Rt. 202 then had dinner at the Greenhill Diner, which is now Hill’s Seafood,” Bill recalled. “We hit it off and dated for about one year before we were engaged and got married not long after.” Marie and Bill married at St. Anastasia and celebrated their nuptials with family and friends at The Knights of Columbus in Newtown Square. They honeymooned in Miami, FL, and settled down in a duplex in Lansdowne for a few months before making the move to Newtown Square. “At the time, my parents were looking to sell their property, so Bill and I decided to buy it from them,” Marie said. They purchased the three-acre parcel, moved into the ranch home, built a pool and started their family. “We raised our four children here and have wonderful memories of them growing up,” Bill said. Marie added, “Florida Park really is a hidden gem. Over the years, countless activities and lifelong

friendships have been formed.” She described a time when there was a Community Hall Association where Marie served on the Board. They had holiday parties, 4th of July picnics, pancake breakfasts and bake sales. “It was an amazing and unique experience for our kids,” Marie said. “They grew up swimming in our pool, fishing in the neighborhood creek, building bonfires and sledding on the steepest hills.” Continued on page 8

Resident Feature Bill said that after their youngest child was born, he and Marie decided to build a larger home to accommodate their growing family. “The land had already been subdivided when we purchased it from Marie’s parents,” he explained. “We sold the ranch home and built a large two-story colonial towards the back of the lot.” These days, Bill and Marie spend a lot of time enjoying their home and their quiet, peaceful backyard. They both enjoy gar-dening and relaxing on their deck that overlooks the creek and open space. When they’re not enjoying their time at home, Marie and Bill like to travel. They regularly visit their daughter in Florida and look forward to traveling a bit more in the coming years. They recently returned from a memorable trip to Harrisburg to witness and celebrate the installation of Marie’s cousin, His Excellency the Most Reverend Timothy C. Senior, as the Twelfth Bishop of Harrisburg. “That was such a meaningful, wonderful trip,” Marie remarked. Marie and Bill’s kids are all grown now but agree that they had the best childhood, and now they enjoy coming back to the neighborhood to spend quality family time together. Their oldest daughter, Stacey, currently lives in Boca Raton, Florida, but has recently decided to head north to spend a few months back home this winter. Their second daughter, Jill, lives about 45 minutes away

Bathroom Remodel? Some Options to Consider Looking to remodel or make some changes to your current bathroom? It can be overwhelming to see how many choices and decisions are involved. Choosing new bathroom fixtures is an important decision that can impact both the functionality and aesthetics of your bathroom. Here are some key options to consider when selecting bathroom fixtures: Sinks and Faucets – Consider the style and functionality you’ll be needing in a particular bathroom when choosing a sink. Common types include pedestal sinks, all-mounted sinks, undermount sinks and vessel sinks. Choose a faucet style that complements the overall design of your bathroom. Some options include single-handle, double-handle, wall-mounted and waterfall faucets. Shower and Tub – When it comes to choosing shower heads, there are various types to consider, depending on the overall style you’re going for. Some popular choices include rain shower heads, handheld and/or massaging shower heads and even dual or multiple shower heads. It’s important to consider the water pressure and spray patterns when choosing. Soaker tubs seem to be at the top of most bathroom remodel lists. Freestanding tubs, alcove or recessed tubs, tub/shower combos and corner tubs are popular choices. Toilets – Options include traditional two-piece toilets and sleek one-piece toilets. Consider whether you want a standard or comfort height toilet. Dual flush toilets offer water-saving options, while pressure-assisted toilets are known for powerful flushes.

Navigating January: A Guide to Winter Wellness When January rolls in and the holiday festivities wind down, many individuals find themselves grappling with the challenge of returning to their usual routine. The time has come to return to work, guide the kids back into school mode and contend with the lingering cold weather and diminished daylight. Given these factors, it is completely normal for this transition to pose difficulties for many individuals.

January 2024

While this time of year can present challenges, the way we approach it can significantly impact your ability to ease back into a healthy routine. By reframing your perspective and viewing it as an opportunity to prioritize your physical and mental health and wellness, you may be able to kickstart the new year on a more positive and intentional note. Here are three wellness practices you can incorporate into your routine this month to help you find some more ease throughout this transition: Wellness Practice #1 Allow yourself to slow down. Since it’s still cold outside, it might mean you’ve been spending more time inside than usual—and that’s okay! While it is important to strike a balance between physical activity and rest, winter marks a time where we should be taking it easy, slowing down and allowing time and space for rest. Allocate time each day to make yourself a cup of tea, read a book or just sit on your couch and do nothing. Wellness Practice #2 Get more sleep. Humans actually need more sleep in the wintertime. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the normal range is to add an extra 1.75 to 2.5 hours per night. Heading to bed an hour early is a good place to start. From there, try your best to maintain a consistent bedtime and waking time. Quality sleep can help us fight illness, regulate appetite and help counter those winter blues. Wellness Practice #3 Spend time outdoors and exercise regularly. Yes, it’s cold out there… but fresh air is good for us! If you enjoy being outside, consider going on a nature walk, sledding, skiing, shoveling snow or ice skating. Dance, Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi classes can be fun ways to get a workout in indoors. You can find a workout online that suits your preference for at-home practice. Making time for physical activity in the winter also goes hand-in-hand with your sleep. Typically, when you get exercise during the day, you tend to have an easier time falling asleep. When you embrace these winter wellness practices, you’ll tend to navigate the seasonal transition with intentionality. Prioritizing our mental and physical health becomes the foundation upon which we build a winter of wellness for us to thrive. NS

Consider New Options for the New Year It’s a new year and maybe you need to take charge of a certain situation in your life that a Private Investigator can help with. Infidelity Investigations Statistics say that 85% of women who feel their lover is cheating are correct and 50% of men who feel their lover is cheating are right. If you have suspicions of infidelity by your spouse or partner, consider calling a private detective. Missing Persons Locating individuals who are missing or have disappeared. Corporate Investigations Investigating internal matters such as employee misconduct, theft or fraud within a business. Our Community by Sheila Turner-Hilliard

New Year, New Goals: Secrets for Making Those Resolutions Stick Ringing in a new year always carries something magical about it. It’s a bittersweet time, when we say goodbye to the past and optimistically look forward to our future. As 2023 comes to an end and we welcome 2024, we’re motivated by opportunities to restart, set goals, accomplish tasks, and sometimes, completely start over. We all make New Year Resolutions, planning in this new year to do everything better than we did last year. We pledge to do things differently. We resolve to save more money or go to the gym consistently. We’ll keep in touch with family more often or we’ll finally check an important item off our bucket list. Some

Newtown Square’s On Location Bridal Team Have You Booked Your Wedding Day Hair And Makeup? Blushing Brides by Blush Salon will take care of all your beauty needs on your special day.

of the most common New Year Resolutions are to exercise more, lose weight, practice self-care, get organized, learn a new skill or hobby, save more money and spend more time with family and friends. But did you know that less than half of those New Year Resolutions actually stick? Sure, we may start out strong, but studies — and our own personal experiences — prove that those pledges to do better wither away within the first two months. No matter what you are resolving to do, there are a few ways you can set yourself up for success in 2024. It’s going to take some extra effort on your end, but it will be worth it. Set Meaningful Goals Be sure that the goal you are striving for is for reasons that are internal to yourself and not put upon you by others. Ask yourself WHY you want to reach your goal. If it’s truly something YOU want, then you are much more likely to succeed. Make a Plan Abstract resolutions are harder to execute than ones that describe specific ways you will work towards your goals. Sit down and write down HOW you will make this the year you finally achieve what you want. Your plan should also include detailed steps about how you will get back on track if you start to lose your way. Tell Someone Your resolutions are more likely to fade away if no one knows about them. Find someone you trust and someone who will be supportive and tell them about your goals and your plan. Sharing your why and your how is a crucial component, and doing so will make you more resolute and persistent.

Goals aren’t achieved overnight, which is why you’re much more likely to succeed if you reward yourself for the steps you take along the way. This should be part of your overall plan, so be specific about how and when you will reward yourself. Just be sure your reward isn’t allowing yourself to perform the habit you are trying to overcome!

DA Del Pizzo & Associates A PROFESSIONAL CORPORATION Certified Public Accountants

We checked in with some of our Sponsors for tips and advice on great ways to start and what to focus on. If getting your finances in better shape is your priority in 2024, then it’s best to listen to professional advice from Jack Del Pizzo, CPA of Del Pizzo & Associates. Jack said that your goal for 2024 should be to maximize contributions to your employer’s qualified retirement plan contri-butions. “These contributions reduce your taxable income, and if you are fortunate, your employer may provide an additional con-tribution for guaranteed growth,” he explained. “Your retirement account will grow tax-free until you make a withdrawal at retire-ment age. Ideally, by that time, your tax rate may be lower than it was when you made the contributions.”

Speaking of staying healthy and strong, we asked Kaitlin Battiste, who is our Expert over at From the Top Studio of Dance, about incorporating movement and music into our daily routines. She said there's no doubt that moving our bodies makes us feel good, and joining a recreational class or club gives us a sense of belonging to a community. “Staying active not only keeps people of all ages physically fit and healthy but provides many social, emotional and intellectual benefits,” Kaitlin explained. “People have always needed outlets to socialize and connect with others, and if we can improve our mental and physical health in the process, it’s a win-win!”

Next up is Michele Quinn and Brittany Naab of Blush Salon, who are Experts in self-care when it comes to your hair and skin. Michele said that if one of your resolutions is to spend more time caring for your skin, the best way to start is from the inside. “The most important skin care tip, especially in the winter months, is keeping your body hydrated,” she said. “You need to be sure to drink 8–10 eight-ounce glasses of water each day.”

Sarah Forti with Forti Homes with Keller Williams Realty said she and her team are planning big things for their home buyers and sellers in 2024. “Our area’s pricing forecast remains strong and the expectation is that we will see some relief around mortgage interest rates,” she explained. “That will shake loose some of the inventory we still need in order to meet the high level of buyer demand.” Sarah and her team of Experts are ready to help our friends and neighbors with all of their real estate needs. Sarah said, “The best way to prepare yourself, though, is to speak with a local real estate professional.”

If you’re looking for a new hairstyle or perhaps experimenting with hair color, the stylists at Blush Salon will have you looking your best in 2024. “Our team can help you choose the right style to compliment the shape of your face and the right color for your skin tone,” Brittany said. “We can also recommend products that will keep your hair healthy and strong.”

By implementing the strategies listed here and heeding the advice of our Experts, you will be well on your way to finally reaching those goals on your TO-DO list. Make 2024 your year to resolve to crush those resolutions. You don’t need luck; you just need the right plan! NS

Business Profile by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos by Crissy Everhart Photography

Quality and Dependable Service Keeping You and Your Family Safe Your car is the vehicle you trust to get you and your family to the places you need to go safely. Whether you’re driving to a business meeting, taking your child to college or heading out in a snowstorm, you depend on your car to get you to your destination. Therefore, where you take your car for repairs matters. In Newtown Square, you won’t find a more honest and trustworthy repair shop than Edgemont Automotive. Such a well-deserved reputation is due to Owner Lou Matteo and his hard-working team. Born in South Philly, Lou Matteo was just one year old when his family moved to Glenolden in Delaware County. As a young child, matchbox cars and Tonka trucks were his toys of choice. Later, model cars became a fascination, along with helping his dad assemble any new household item. At 13 years old, Lou landed a job at a corner gas station in Clifton Heights. The more time he spent there, the more his fascination with all types of vehicles grew. He saved up his earnings to buy a 4-wheel ATV, making all the repairs and upgrades. “There is something about taking things apart and putting things back together that really interests me,” Lou said. During junior high, he played football until he had to choose between football or the automotive repair program in Folcroft and Marple Vo-tech schools. It turns out the love of cars and all things mechanical was just too strong.

Owner, Lou Matteo in the shop

In 1996, Lou started working at Edgemont Automotive, a primary automotive repair company. Lou’s skills helped him quickly move up, from technician to manager. He purchased and became owner of Edgemont Automotive in 2015. “We do everything, from repairs and engine performance to computer diagnostics. Anyone who has something with wheels needs us,” said Lou. Their state-ofthe-art equipment and eight-vehicle service garage with four lifts at Edgemont Automotive means that Lou and his team can handle anything on all makes and model vehicles. Lou said that winter is the best time to make sure your vehicle is up to date on general maintenance. “The key is to make sure all your maintenance is caught up,” he explained. “Be certain that fluid levels are full and always have a little extra washer fluid on hand because salted roads can make a mess of your windshield.” Winter is also the perfect time to change your wiper blades and have your battery and charging system checked. “Batteries hate extreme temperature changes, and if your battery is over three years old, bring it in for a visual inspection as well as a load test before you get caught in the cold,” Lou warned.

The team at Edgemont Automotive (L to R): Nick Massimi, Chris Taylor, Rich Books, Louis Matteo, Louis Matteo, Jr., Jaeger Ungerbuehler 18

Lou also stressed the importance of having your tires checked for proper pressure and overall condition. “Safety inspection requires a minimum of 2/32 of an inch of tread to pass, but in winter weather, that is not enough space to clear slush from under the tire so it contacts the road as designed,” he explained. Finally, Lou said that the brine and salt used to clear our roads are hazardous to the underside of our vehicles. To help prevent rust and rot, Lou advises us to have the underside of our vehicles rinsed down with

at least a garden hose every spring. “We are here to ensure that you stay safe this winter.” Customers have described Edgemont Automotive as “family-style auto-repair.” Lou’s oldest son, Louis, has worked for the business for the past six years, and everyone else on Lou’s team has years of training and experience. “Being with my group of guys really makes the day enjoyable and fun. This isn’t just a business; it’s what I truly enjoy,” Lou said. The type of environment Edgemont Automotive has makes even the customers feel part of the group. “I’ve been seeing the same customers for the past 20 years,“ Lou said, “and many of them have become my good friends.”

Whenever a customer leaves happy with a working car, that’s a win for Lou. “It’s worth more than all the money, knowing you solved the problem and the customer is driving away happy.” The team at Edgemont Automotive’s motto is: Safety Comes First. Edgemont Automotive is located at 5040 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square. They’re open Monday through Friday from 7:30am 6pm. For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit www.EdgemontAutomotive.com or call 610-353-9868. NS

Rich Books starts your auto repair process, taking your information and dropping you off at home or work. Lead Technician Chris Taylor is a mechanical wizard and Nick Massini brings the credentials and experience necessary to get the job done right. Jaeger Ungerbuehler is their newest parttime employee while studying at Automotive Training Center in Exton. Lou said he is a shop helper while learning and an excellent customer service representative. This team’s automotive diagnostic and repair experience is only surpassed by the care and concern for customers’ safety and well-being. “These guys feel like my family. Todd Welch: Honoring and Remembering Our Fallen Police Officers During this season of good cheer, good deeds and generosity, we like to feature folks in our area who give their time, talents, energy and resources to those in need. And our community is undoubtedly filled with generous people who expect nothing in return other than knowing they make a difference in someone’s life. Todd Welch is no stranger to the friends and neighbors in our community. He has not only served as a Newtown Township Police Officer for the past 27 years; he is a lifelong Newtown Square resident, Marple Newtown graduate, and a volunteer member of our Newtown Square Fire Company. Todd has dedicated his life to serving others in our neighborhood and beyond. This spring, Todd will once again raise money and awareness for fallen Law Enforcement Officers and their families through the Police Unity Tour. “The tour is a four-day, 270-mile bike ride to Todd’s parents played in memorial services along the bike route Washington, D.C.,” he explained. “The main purpose is to raise awareness of the ultimate sacrifice made by so

many law enforcement officers while also raising funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum.”

Todd in his Class A Uniform to escort families of fallen Police Officers

The Police Unity Tour was organized by Officer Patrick P. Montuore of the Florham Park Police Department in May 1997. What started with 18 riders on a four-day fund-raising bicycle ride from Florham Park, NJ, to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., has grown into nine chapters consisting of over 2,600 members nationwide who make the trip annually. Participants include riders, motorcycles, and support personnel. Todd said that each participant must meet a minimum fundraising goal, and a portion of the money raised goes towards food and lodging during the trip. Full-time, part-time, and retired law enforcement officers and families of fallen officers (at least 18 years old) can participate as a rider or support members. “One year, my parents participated with me as support personnel,” Todd recalled. “They played snare and tenor drums at memorial events along the way to D.C. That was very special.” This will be the fifth time that Todd has participated in the ride. “The journey is long and challenging, but it is worth every minute I spend training,” Todd explained. “Our chapter rides together

in unity, making stops along the way to honor our local fallen officers.” He said that on the fourth day, all riders’ chapters gather at RFK Stadium before proceeding to the police memorial.

The final day of the tour concludes with a candlelight vigil and ceremony at the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial and Museum. Participants are greeted by friends, family, and survivors. Once there, many Police Unity Tour members present remembrance bracelets worn on their wrists throughout the journey to the families of the fallen. This year, Todd will be riding in memory of Sgt. Christopher Fitzgerald, a Temple University Police Department Officer, who was killed in the line of duty in February 2023. “It is such an honor to put on my Class A Uniform that day and escort the families of the fallen to their seats,” Todd said. “Their loved ones paid the ultimate price to better our communities, and we are there to assure them that their lives mattered, and their stories will continue to be told.” Thank you, Todd, for your service here in our hometown and for helping to raise awareness for our fallen officers nationwide. Expert Contributor by Scott Magness Scott‘s Fireplace Products

How Lovely is a Gas Fireplace in Winter? There’s nothing like the ambiance of a crackling, inviting fire as the centerpiece for a cozy winter afternoon or evening. There are numerous benefits to having a gas fireplace during the winter season, not the least of which include: Convenience - Gas fireplaces are easy to use and require minimal effort to start and maintain. With just the flip of a switch or the push of a button, you can have a warm and cozy fire instantly, without the hassle of collecting wood or cleaning up ashes. Energy Efficiency - Gas fireplaces are generally more energyefficient than traditional wood-burning fireplaces, and can provide a significant amount of heat with relatively low fuel consumption, making them a cost-effective heating option. Cleanliness - Gas fireplaces produce fewer byproducts than wood-burning fireplaces. There is no ash, soot or creosote buildup, which means less mess and easier maintenance. This can be especially beneficial for individuals who suffer from Asthma or other breathing problems. Control Over Heat Output - Many gas fireplaces come with adjustable heat settings, allowing you to control the level of warmth generated. This flexibility is beneficial because you can use the fireplace for both ambiance and heating purposes, adjusting it according to your comfort needs. Safety - Gas fireplaces are generally considered safer than traditional wood-burning ones. There’s no risk of flying sparks, and they

don’t require an open chimney, reducing the potential for chimney fires. Additionally, modern gas fireplaces often come equipped with safety features, such as automatic shut-off mechanisms. Instant Heat - Unlike wood-burning fireplaces that take time to start and build up heat, gas fireplaces provide instant warmth. This can be particularly useful during cold winter evenings when you want to quickly warm up a room or want to enjoy a nice fire close to bedtime. Low Environmental Impact - While burning natural gas does produce carbon emissions, modern gas fireplaces are designed to be more environmentally friendly than traditional wood-burning options. They generally emit fewer pollutants and particulates, contributing to better air quality. Versatility in Design - Gas fireplaces come in a variety of designs, from traditional to contemporary. This allows homeowners to choose a style that complements their decor and adds aesthetic value to a room. It’s important to note that the specific benefits may vary depending on the type and model of the gas fireplace, as well as the efficiency of your home. Regular maintenance and proper usage are also crucial to ensure the continued safety and effectiveness of a gas fireplace. NS

Celebrating Super Bowl Sunday: Bringing Friends & Neighbors Together The countdown to Super Bowl LVIII (58) is on! Whether you tune in for the game, the commercials or the halftime show, this year’s celebration calls for friends, fun and “fan”tastic food. The game, where the National Football Conference (NFC) champion will face the American Football Conference (AFL) winner, will be played on Sunday, February 11th at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV, home of the Las Vegas Raiders. Allegiant Stadium is conveniently located close to the Las Vegas strip, fully enclosed and climate-controlled with a capacity of 65,000. The game will air live on CBS but can also be streamed live through subscription services like YouTube TV, Hulu and Paramount+. New this year is a partnership between CBS and Nickelodeon to present a slime-centric alternative telecast of the Super Bowl. Nickelodeon’s broadcast will feature a family-friendly version of the game, with fun, slimy graphics and appearances by some familiar Nickelodeon stars like SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star. The featured performer for the halftime show, sponsored by Apple Music, is eight-time Grammy Award winner

Usher. The pop star is in the midst of his residence show in Las Vegas — just a short drive from Allegiant Stadium. On the day of the Super Bowl, Usher will also release a new album called Coming Home. The entertainment continues with a line-up of some of the best and most-watched commercials from seasoned advertisers such as Toyota, Doritos and TurboTax. Additional expected advertisers are those with online gambling platforms and virtual shopping services. To host or not to host? That’s a good question! If you’re planning to host your own Super Bowl party, we’ve got some great ideas to score a touchdown with your guests. All it takes is a little creativity and some ideas from our Sponsors. When you think of a Super Bowl party, the first thing that comes to mind is food. There’s just something about gathering around the big screen with a plate full of wings, nachos and chips, right? Lucky for us, we have one of the best places to pick up freshly prepared foods right around the corner at Luigi & Giovanni’s. Owner John D’Alessandro said business is booming on game day, so it’s best to call a few days ahead and pre-order your selections. “We sell a lot of our homemade strombolis that, when sliced thin, make a great game-time snack,” John said. “We have your traditional Italian meat stromboli as well as cheesesteak, chicken cheesesteak, pepperoni and cheese, buffalo chicken and vegetable strombolis.” Other fun foods to serve on game day are cheesesteak egg rolls, tomato pie and nachos. If you’re looking for some healthier alternatives, include fruit and vegetable trays along with some grilled chicken skewers

Our friends at Weinrich’s Bakery not only have a wide selection of sweet treats like mini cheesecakes, cookies and lemon bars, they also make their own German Bavarian Pretzels perfect for pleasing a crowd. How about stepping up your game this year with a Super Bowl Sundae ice cream bar? Another fun idea is to dip pretzel rods in chocolate and decorate them with white icing lines that look like yard markers on a football field. Football-shaped decorated cakes and cinnamon churro chips with chocolate dip are more fun ideas to consider.

to a friend’s house, some enjoy watching the game surrounded by big screens and bustling crowds. If that’s your idea of celebrating the Super Bowl, then you’ve got lots of nearby options. Over at Casey’s, you’ll find the best beers on tap, a spacious bar area, fantastic food options and a view of the game from every seat in the house. Whether you’re hosting or heading out to watch the game, the commercials or the halftime show, Super Bowl Sunday is a great way to celebrate with our friends and neighbors. Of course, it’s a bonus if your favorite team is on the field. Fingers crossed! NS

If your party plans include the little ones, why not create a kids’ zone with games and crafts? A simple do-it-yourself game is to pin the football on the goalpost. Draw a goalpost on a large poster board. Using either felt or construction paper, cut out some football shapes and attach the double-sided tape to one side. Emily Kwon: Making Our Community More Inclusive When Emily Kwon moved to Broomall from South Korea in eighth grade, one of the first things she did was join the Best Buddies club at Paxon Hollow Middle School. Emily’s passion and interest in helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) began when she was a young girl growing up with cousins who had special needs. “When I learned about Best Buddies, I was so excited about the opportunities to promote inclusion,” explained Emily. “Back in South Korea, my cousins weren’t given the same opportunities. It always made me sad that inclusion isn’t common there.” Emily is now a sophomore at Marple Newtown High School (MNHS) and is the co-president of MNHS’s chapter of Best Buddies. Founded in 1989, Best Buddies International is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create friendships and social connections with people within a community who have IDDs. With thousands of chapters around the world, they create opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development and inclusive living. Emily said that joining the club has allowed her to expand her knowledge about inclusion and help establish her future goals. “Eventually, I hope to expand and influence people with intellectual disabilities all around the world,” she said. This November, Emily was honored at the Champion of the Year Gala, an annual fundraising competition featuring a select group of individuals, professionals and prominent community leaders who compete to raise the most funds for Best Buddies and earn the title of Champion of the Year. The gala, held at the Drexelbrook, celebrated the efforts of several philanthropic leaders from Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs while raising funds for

Best Buddies programs. Emily Kwon and The event inMr. Michael Winterbottom at cluded a silent the Champion of the Year Gala and live auction, dinner, dancing, a keynote address and a special awards ceremony. MNHS teacher and Best Buddies advisor Mr. Michael Winterbottom was not surprised at Emily’s recognition for her work with the organization. “Emily is always stepping up and is never reluctant to take on a new challenge,” he said. Last year, the MNHS Best Buddies held its first Best Buddies Ball, which Emily was instrumental in planning. “It was a big challenge, but Emily is always eager to try something. She rarely says no to an idea!” he added. For the past eight years, the MNHS Best Buddies club has been offering students a multitude of activities and opportunities to make lifelong friendships. The group helps those with and without disabilities, allowing participants to learn from each other. “We want to match students who have similar interests and bring out the best in each other,” Mr. Winterbottom explained. Best Buddies is one the largest clubs at MNHS, with nearly 80 students who participate. In addition to weekly meetings and activities at the school, the club participates in a number of National Best Buddies events, including the Friendship Walk, the

leading walk in the country supporting inclusion for people with IDDs. Each year, members of the group also take the Polar Bear Plunge, a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. The MNHS Best Buddies club gets involved in local events as well. Multiple times a year, they pack meals together for Kids Against Hunger. A few years ago the club organized a birthday campaign for Newtown Square resident and veteran Eugene Vickers of Newtown Square on his 106th birthday. Their card campaign produced over 500 birthday cards. The group also created a lawn sign commemorating his birthday and had members of the MN Band play for him. This year marks the third time that Best Buddies will be making 150 bag lunches at The Unforgotten Haven, a charity that operates out of Camden, NJ. Emily said that the best part of Best Buddies is coordinating events and seeing how much fun the students are having. “It just brings me joy,” she said. “It’s really given me a new perspective about friendship and the importance of inclusion.” To learn more

Winter HVAC Tips Winter is here and that means cold and drier weather. The winter season brings a variety of adverse weather extremes from snow, ice accumulation, freezing temperatures and a high wind chill. All that makes it the perfect time for Winter HVAC tips. Here’s a list of things you can do to ensure your HVAC is running efficiently while keeping your home toasty and warm during the cold months ahead. 1. Bundle Up and Lower Your Thermostat - By wearing a sweater or sweatshirt, you might find yourself just as comfortable as wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Even a slight downward adjustment of the thermostat in the winter has a big impact on utilities. 2. Using a programmable thermostat will help to avoid forgetting any changes to the thermostat, like programming the thermostat

to restore the temperature just before you get out of bed and just before you get home. Heating • Air Conditioning • Plumbing

3. Adding an extra blanket and setting the temperature back a couple of degrees overnight can also help you save more money. Of course, set the temperature back when no one’s home.

The smarter way to replace your HVAC.

4. Walking around the outside of your home, look for plumbing and electrical penetrations through the walls. If any are not wellcaulked, add extra sealant. Don’t forget to weather-strip and/or caulk doors and windows.

5. If you have a fireplace that is not in use, you should seal the flue. Even closed, fireplace flues are the source of air leaks. If the fireplace is used, add custom-fitted tempered glass doors and seal the edges.

6. If your system is older than 20 years, it’s time to consider replacing it. Replacing the unit with a higher efficiency unit will improve your comfort and reduce your heating costs.

Lifetime Warranty Filtration System

7. Combustion furnaces and boilers require annual maintenance to operate at peak efficiency.

No Repair Charges No Labor Fees

Burners, for example, fall out of adjustment over the course of a heating season, wasting fuel. Beyond saving money, annual service is a safety issue for combustion heating systems.

EV vs. Hybrid vs. Gas: Repair Cost Differences While discussions on the upfront costs of Electric Vehicles (EVs), hybrids and gas vehicles have been at the forefront of car-buying debates recently, perhaps the more realistic comparison is to look at the differences in their average yearly maintenance and repair costs. Keep in mind that maintenance costs refer to standard car maintenance to address regular wear and tear of the vehicle and keep it running smoothly, not repair costs. Repair costs can vary significantly depending on the type of vehicle you own. While repair shop familiarity with EVs and hybrids used to be an issue when repairing newer types of vehicles, more garages these days are familiar with how to maintain and repair hybrids and EVs. Maintenance Electric Vehicles - The highest maintenance cost will be the battery pack, which generally lasts about eight to ten years. The battery cost depends on the type needed and its current availability but is typically in the four-figure dollar range. Because of regenerative braking, you won’t need to replace your brake pads as frequently, and because there are fewer moving parts in an electric engine, there are fewer things to break or experience wear and tear, so you won’t need to do regular tune-ups.

Hybrid Vehicles - Because Hybrid vehicles have both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine, they’ll need regular oil changes and parts replacement like spark plugs, batteries and brake pads on roughly the same maintenance schedule. Because hybrids also have a regenerative braking system, which can reduce wear on traditional brake pads, you won’t need to replace your brake pads as frequently as in a gas vehicle, and they may have fewer maintenance needs related to the internal combustion engine. Gas-powered Vehicles - Besides the cost of fuel, which is decidedly higher in gas vehicles than either of the other two options, regular maintenance like oil changes, fluid replacement and tune-ups are needed regularly. Additionally, gas vehicles require battery replacement every four to five years, brake replacement every 40,000 miles or so, and the manufacturer’s suggested mileage-based maintenance. History Spotlight

The Milk Trolley by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of the Newtown Square Historical Society

In the early days of West Chester Pike, farmers from Newtown Square and surrounding communities brought their milk to be sold in Philadelphia each day via horse and wagon. The trip to the city and back took all day. Then, beginning in 1895, the Philadelphia & West Chester Traction Company started to run a trolley car between Philadelphia and Newtown Square (eventually going all the way to West Chester). By January of 1897, the company added a daily “milk run.” A special trolley car would travel out to the end of the line, drop off the empty cans from the previous day’s run, and then pick up full milk cans from farmers on the way back to Philadelphia. Farmers had cans custom-made to identify their brand and location. Once the trolley reached 63rd Street, the milk would be purchased by local dairies lined up with horse-drawn wagons. Milk can from Liseter Farm in Newtown Square

The service was a boon to the farming families, and over one million quarts of milk were transported in just the first year. The farmers built platforms along the route of the trolley where their milk could be easily picked up. Newtown Square was such a busy pickup location that a special siding off the main line was built next to the Newtown Square Hotel, at the corner of West Chester Pike and Newtown Street Road. Known by the locals as the “Farmers Siding”, it became the convenient location for pickup and delivery of milk destined for Philadelphia for many years.

However, in 1924 the milk companies started sending their own delivery trucks down West Chester Pike directly to the farmers. By January of 1925, the “milk trolley” was done and milk service was discontinued. The siding next to the Newtown Square Hotel was eventually ripped out and its history was forgotten. With West Chester Pike and Newtown Street Road widened several times since then, all traces of the “milk trolley” siding were buried in history. In 2020 during the latest widening of West Chester Pike, two small pieces of rail from the Farmer’s Siding were unearthed. The artifacts are proudly displayed at the Newtown Square Railroad Museum at Drexel Lodge Park, along with one of the later trolley cars that continued to Parts of trolley rails uncovered by PennDOT in 2020 when carry passengers to Newtown excavating near former site Square. FAQs for Attorneys Here are some typical questions people have for their attorney: What is the difference between a lawyer and an attorney? The terms are often used interchangeably and there is no real difference between the two terms in this country. In England there is a difference in that barristers represent people in court and lawyers don’t appear in court but do render legal advice to their clients. What are the costs associated with hiring an attorney? Attorney fees vary depending on the complexity and subject matter of the case, as well as the attorney’s experience and the location. Some subject matter is chargeable by hourly rates while others are on a contingency. How long does it take to resolve a legal matter? The duration varies depending on the type and complexity of the case. Attorneys can provide an estimate based on their experience,

however with the advent of COVID, it is even more difficult to estimate how long a case will take. What information should I bring to my initial consultation with an attorney? Bring everything that has anything to do with what you are consulting the attorney for, whether you think it is relevant or not. Let the attorney decide what is relevant. How does attorney-client privilege work? Attorney-client privilege protects communications between a client and their attorney from being disclosed without the client’s consent. The client holds the confidentiality privilege and not the attorney, meaning that the confidentiality is for the protection of the client. What is a retainer fee, and how does it work? A retainer fee is an upfront payment to secure an attorney’s services. The attorney then bills against this retainer as they work on the case and the client is given a billing statement. Usually retainers are held in escrow by the attorney until services are rendered or litigation costs are paid. What are alternative dispute resolution methods, and are they suitable for my case? Mediation and arbitration are alternative methods to resolve disputes outside of court, and they are used more often now than prior to COVID. An attorney can advise on whether these methods are appropriate for your situation. How can I keep legal costs down? Clear communication with your attorney, providing organized and relevant information, along with following their advice can help keep legal fees down. What is the likelihood of success in my case? While no attorney can guarantee specific outcomes, they can provide an assessment based on their experience with the subject matter and the court to advise of the possible remedies and/or strategies. What should I do if I cannot afford an attorney? Explore options such as legal aid, pro bono services, clinics at law schools or places that offer sliding scale fees. Some attorneys offer free initial consultations. Remember, these are general questions, and the specific details will depend on the jurisdiction, the type of law and the unique circumstances of each case. Always consult with a qualified attorney for advice tailored to your situation. NS
