Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Each September I try to remember how blessed I am to begin a new year as Publisher of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors in print, and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. My attitude of gratitude grew from last month by all those kind words, texts and emails from readers congratulating me on last month’s special issue which celebrated our first five years as Newtown Square’s monthly hometown magazine. I was humbed. The credit for our first five years of social-mediain-print success belongs to all involved. And that includes you.

Within the 60 past cover images as the August issue cover, I saw the support of my wife, Jean Blaisse, the artistry of our Graphic Designer, Kim Cesati, the executive assistant skills of Lisa Jeffries, and the writing and social skills of our Content Coordinator, Sheila Turner-Hilliard, and our guest writers, like Doug Humes and our Experts. Sheila’s anniversary feature sharing her experiences with quotes from colleagues, past cover families and Sponsors, told me we are serving our mission to be Bringing People Together. (If you missed Sheila’s 5th Anniversary feature article in last month’s August issue, visit www.NewtownSquareMag.com.)

Now kicking off our 6th year, I’m confident we have a strong magazine team and many thousands of loyal readers who extend your loyalty to your hometown and hometown magazine, to our Sponsors who make our free magazine possible. With your continued loyalty as a reader, choosing to do business with hometown Sponsors first, whenever possible, the future of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors looks bright.

This month we welcome our newest Sponsor, The CP Welde Group, led by longtime Newtown Square resident Charles Welde, who, along with his wife Peg, raised their three daughters while being involved in our community, Charles’ desire to sponsor his hometown magazine was not surprising. With his strong local reputation for integrity, and unique “Bucket Plan” for those planning to retire, we’re fortunate Charles Welde, CPA, CFP, has also agreed to serve as our Expert Contributor of occasional feature articles related to his particular areas of professional expertise: financial planning and investment management.

Charles, on behalf of your Newtown Square friends and neighbors, thank you for your hometown sponsorship and…, Welcome to the Party! (Look for Charles Welde’s first Expert Contributor feature in our November issue. And see The CP Welde Group’s first sponsorship ad on page 7.)

Thank you all, for your faithful readership these past five years. Fall into this new September issue that Sheila has put together for us, which I know you'll enjoy.

Dear Residents,

So long, summer! It seems there’s never enough time to soak it all in. Here’s hoping you were able to fill some of your days with sun, surf and sand.

And just like that, September snaps us back to reality. Back to school, routines and all things pumpkin spice. We welcome cooler weather, falling leaves and post-season baseball. Speaking of baseball, join us in congratulating our Newtown Edgmont Little League board members, players and volunteers for hosting an amazing PA State Championship series! You’ll also meet Terry Jones and Maggie Murphy-Jones who have sculpted a beautiful life in Newtown Square. And our Business Profile highlights ELPS Private Detective Agency: Jeff Stein and his team are dedicated to serving the security and investigation needs of our community.

We are always looking for more Newtown Square families, individuals and organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

Murphy-Jones: Sculpting Meaningful Moments In Time

Terry Jones and Maggie

Your Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine’s mission of Bringing People Together often shines the spotlight on families and individuals who make a difference in our community and beyond. This month, we are proud to introduce you to Terry Jones and Maggie Murphy-Jones: a couple who designs and sculpts meaningful moments for themselves in Newtown Square while sharing their passions and projects with others around the globe.

If you haven’t heard about Terry Jones, you’ve likely seen his work at some of our iconic historical sites. He is a world-renowned sculptor whose monuments include an eight-foot bronze statue of Union General John Gibbon in Gettysburg, PA, the Lt. Gen. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller statue at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, VA and the Mariners’ Monument comprised of four life-size bronze statues and a 3' x 5' relief plaque all mounted on 49 tons of Vermont granite at the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY.

Those are just a few of Terry’s works that he designs and sculpts right here from his home studio in Newtown Square. It’s an artist’s paradise tucked away in a serene setting perfect for designing, creating and sculpting some of our nation’s national treasures. It’s a home he shares with his wife, Maggie, who is a successful illustrator and designer who also spends time photographing and documenting Terry’s sculptures from conception to dedication.

Terry said that he has always loved history and art. “Back when I was in high school, I would borrow history books from the library and spent much of my time drawing in my notebooks,” he said. “But I was also very interested in archeology and wanted to travel the world.” Terry explained that when he was a junior in high school, his mother asked him what he wanted to do after graduation. He told her he wanted to study archeology but found that the best college program in that field was financially out of reach. She then asked him if he had any other interests, to which he said he wanted to study art.

“Unfortunately, the Catholic high school I attended in Chester didn’t have an art program,” Terry explained. “So, my mother suggested that I enroll at Ridley Township High School for my Senior year.” While Terry wasn’t too happy about switching schools so late, he worked hard to catch up and created a portfolio he submitted to several area colleges. “There were 10 of us from Ridley who were applying to art schools,” he said. “Nine of the ten were accepted – I was the tenth.”

Rejection didn’t deter Terry, however. He immediately returned to the “drawing board” and created an entirely new portfolio. He undoubtedly had talent, but his grit and determination impressed admissions directors and ultimately earned him acceptance to the Hussian School of Art in Philadelphia. Terry studied there before enlisting and serving in the United States Marine Corps Reserves.

Terry began his career as an artist, creating artwork for a furniture company who advertised in the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin. He then embraced an opportunity to start his sculpting career at the former Franklin Mint, developing 600 bas-relief (pronounced bah-relief) medals and coins. Sculpting in bas-relief starts with a flat plaster base onto which the artist “draws” an image in clay in very low layers, measured in millimeters, until the depiction of the future coin is complete. An impression of dimension is created, but remains almost flat, like any of the coins we might have in our pockets. During his time at the Mint, Terry had the opportunity to take a sabbatical and was accepted at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris for a semester studying sculpture in France. “I was with the Franklin Mint for 16 years,” Terry said. “My time

there served me well, and it was where I met my wife, Maggie, but I always knew I wanted to go out on my own.”

Terry moved from bas-relief to creating figures “in the round.” He coupled that with his love for history by designing and sculpting figures from our past. “I study each individual thoroughly because I need to accurately capture their personality, mannerisms and expressions,” he explained. “It is my responsibility to tell their story and my legacy that my bronzes will exist for centuries - with my name on them.”

You need three things for a monument to happen: a site, funding and passion. Before beginning a commission, Terry crafts a small

model so those who commissioned the work can approve the design before the major work begins. The next step is enlarging the small model to the full height of the actual statue in clay, in his studio, usually with the use of suited-up models. When Terry is finally satisfied with his sculpture, a crew from the Laran Bronze Foundry from Chester PA arrives to transport the clay sculpture to the foundry for the very complicated casting process, which takes about 12 weeks. The steps involve molds, wax, ceramic shell, melting out the wax (lost wax), pouring the molten bronze, cleaning and reassembling the statue and finally applying a patina.

Terry said that bringing a sculpture to life is a team effort and credits both the foundry and his wife, Maggie, for his success. “Maggie is a talented illustrator who helps me take my original sketches to another level,” he said. “She helps me fine-tune every detail before I begin working on the model.” Maggie also makes sure that the entire process is memorialized for years to come. “I take photos of every step of the process,” she said proudly. “Each of Terry’s monuments has a dedicated photo album complete with captions and copies of every news article printed.”

Most days, while Terry is busy sculpting in his home studio, Maggie is working diligently in her own studio space on the second floor of their home. “I have been very fortunate to have been employed continuously as an illustrator and designer since the day I graduated from Moore College of Art and Design, where I earned my BFA in Illustration,” she said. Early in her career, Maggie worked for McGraw-Hill’s educational division creating artwork for books, posters, games and other classroom materials. After a few successful years, Maggie decided to become a freelance artist and began working for the former Franklin Mint. “I designed giftware for production in porcelain, metal, crystal and resin,” she explained. “I created designs for figurines, ornaments, dolls and many more collectibles.” Maggie also began accepting assignments from The Danbury Mint, The Bradford Group, Avon and The Hamilton Exchange. Most of her work over the past 25 years has been for Lenox, Inc.

It would be pretty tough to find a household in Newtown Square, or the United States for that matter, that doesn’t have a cherished piece or two of Lenox on their shelf, so it’s pretty amazing to know that many of you have something that Maggie MurphyJones designed. “I designed all nine of Lenox’s Nursery Sets, which included a cup, bowl, spoon, fork and frames,” she said. “I also designed most of Lenox’s Happy Holly Days porcelain giftware line, including lighted figures, serving pieces and cookie jars.” Maggie said that Lenox always sends her a sample of the finished product once her designs are brought to life. “Our guest room is filled with figurines that make it a special place for our two granddaughters when they stay with us,” she said. “I also love to give some of my work to family and friends.”

These days, Maggie is designing a new collection of Lenox ornaments and over the years, has completed children’s themed murals. Maggie also continues to expand her knowledge of art by taking botanical illustration classes at Longwood Gardens, Chanticleer and Main Line School Night.

Terry continues his love of history and art by having participated in scores of battle re-enactments and historical events. He has studied the life of Benjamin West (1738-1820) extensively and can often be found at the Square Tavern in Newtown Square and at various Newtown Township events to present an in-depth look at the artist who began his career at the Square Tavern in Newtown Square and went on to be known as the Father of American painting. West spent his childhood years at the Square Tavern, where his father worked. His art caught the attention of many supportive individuals who sent him to study in Italy. He then established a studio in London, was selected as a court painter to King George III, and became one of the founders of the Royal Academy of the Arts in London; he is buried at St. Paul’s Cathedral there.

Benjamin West was passionate about teaching young painters. He opened his studio and his home to students from America who wanted to further their art education. “Like Benjamin West, I, too, am passionate about the arts at the forefront in schools,” Terry said. “Young people have to realize they can make a contribution through the arts.”

Fortunately for us, many members of our community support Terry’s mission and recognize the importance of keeping the arts and history alive. “I am very excited to announce that I am in the process of designing a monument of Benjamin West that will be located on the grounds of the Ellis Preserve,” Terry remarked. “The project has received a pledge of a generous donation from Stephen Spaeder, Principal and Senior Vice President of Equus Capital Partners, Ltd. We look forward to continuing our fundraising campaign this fall.”

Whether it’s completing a life-size bronze statue of a decorated soldier or designing a piece of Lenox porcelain that becomes a family heirloom, both Maggie and Terry appreciate their talents' impact on those around them. “We are very lucky to continue to be so passionate about our work after all these years,” they said. Trending: Metal Roofing

While asphalt roofing has been the most common choice in roofing material for most of our lifetimes, current trends show another material that is quickly soaring upwards in popularityMetal Roofing!

Metal roofing has always been an extraordinary option, especially for commercial properties, but these days the residential sector has fallen in love with this choice. In fact, industry experts are predicting that over the next decade, it will overtake asphalt as the top choice.

Metal roofing is extremely durable and long-lasting

If it’s properly installed, a standing seam metal roof can last 30 years or more, and in ideal conditions, you could get up to 50 years with it, as long as it’s maintained properly. Keep in mind that scratching or damaging the painted finish on the steel roofing panels during installation can expose the bare steel to the elements, leading to rust, which will shorten the roof’s lifespan. It’s important to gather detailed pictures of the roof from the contractor after it was installed to ensure you won’t have any problems long-term.

Enhances homes’ curb appeal

A big reason why metal roofing is becoming more popular is because people are using it as an alternative to shingles or they are using it as an accent roof like on their front porch or back portico. It introduces a different element to the home, comes in a variety of colors, and complements the traditional asphalt shingle home nicely.

It’s virtually maintenance-free

After installation, the only major maintenance required is checking around penetrations, like vent pipes, as well as normal roof debris removal. You should still get a standing seam metal roof checked out every year or two to catch any potential problems before they become a headache. The lack of maintenance is why a standing seam metal roof is preferred over a screw-down panel metal roof.

Metal is a versatile roofing material

While a metal roof is more expensive than asphalt roofs, it lasts longer and is also one of the most energy-efficient, sustainable and versatile roofing materials. Given it comes in a variety of metals and colors, it’s a great alternative to sprucing up your home’s exterior. N S

Embrace the Golden Season: Why Fall is the Best Time to Sell Your Home

When it comes to selling your home, timing can play a crucial role in attracting the right buyers and maximizing your selling potential. While spring and summer have traditionally been the peak seasons for real estate, fall is increasingly proving to be an opportune time for sellers.

1.

Less Competition, More Attention

One of the primary advantages of selling your home in the fall is that the market tends to be less saturated with listings compared to the spring and summer months. With fewer homes available for sale, your property is likely to stand out and receive more attention from potential buyers.

2.

Motivated Buyers

Buyers in the fall often have a sense of urgency. Many want to close the deal before the holiday season arrives or before the new year begins. This motivation can work in your favor, leading to quicker and more favorable negotiations.

3.

Showcasing Warmth and Coziness

As the weather starts to cool down, fall allows you to highlight the warmth and coziness of your home. By tastefully decorating with seasonal elements like pumpkins, fall wreaths, and warm-colored accents, you can create an inviting atmosphere that resonates with buyers and helps them envision living in the space.

4.

Breathtaking Curb Appeal

Fall foliage can work wonders for your home’s curb appeal. A well-maintained lawn framed by vibrant autumn colors can create a captivating first impression, enticing potential buyers to explore further.

5.

Ideal Weather for House Hunting

Unlike the scorching summer or the cold winter, fall offers comfortable weather for house hunting. Buyers can explore properties without the discomfort of extreme temperatures, making them more likely to spend extra time evaluating your home.

6. Post-Summer Financial Stability

After summer vacations and expenditures, many potential buyers have a better understanding of their financial situation. This stability can prompt serious homebuyers to make confident offers in the fall.

7. Closing Efficiency

With the peak home-buying frenzy subsiding, mortgage lenders, home inspectors and other professionals involved in the home-

buying process are likely to have more availability, leading to smoother and faster closings.

8. Take Advantage of Year-End Tax Benefits

Selling your home in the fall allows you to take advantage of year-end tax benefits. Consult with a tax professional to explore potential deductions related to the sale of your property.

Embrace the golden season to make the most of this ideal time to sell your home and transition into the next exciting chapter of your life. N S

my degree.” Though Jeff enjoyed a successful 25-year career in the retail sector, in 2006, he decided to take control of his destiny by forming ELPS.

Jeff says his family is the biggest inspiration in his life. He has two children; his son is a Junior in high school and his daughter is a Junior in college. Jeff married his soulmate in May 2022. She has three children, and all together, they are a fun party of seven. Jeff said he enjoys helping the community and has spent nearly 30 years volunteering. “I was a volunteer fireman and EMT for over a decade and also spent ten years as the Rescue Captain,” he explained. “And when my kids were younger, I coached rec and travel softball, Pop Warner Football, and middle school football.” Jeff is also a past President of the West Chester University Alumni Association, where he volunteered as a WCU Alum.

Jeff reflected on his success and the success of his agency. “I started as a one-man operation working from my dining room table,” he explained. “Over the years, ELPS has grown to a team of 40 employees and opened a second office location.” Jeff has also prioritized continuing his education in the field and sharing his experiences and expert knowledge with others. He has received advanced training in interviewing and interrogation techniques and attended the New Jersey State Police Academy. He is Board Certified as a Criminal Defense Investigator by the Criminal Defense Investigation Training Council and is a Board Accredited Investigator. Jeff comes to the field with impressive credentials. He has been in the investigative profession since he was 17 and received a B.A. in Criminal Justice from West Chester University. “I have always been interested in Criminal Justice,” he said. “When I was 17 years old, I began working in retail loss prevention and worked my way up to become a Director of Loss Prevention while earning

His list of accomplishments and accolades is impressive and sets him and his team apart from other investigative agencies. “I was recently appointed Executive Director of Intellenet, a prestigious international network of investigators with over 600 members in 70 countries,” Jeff remarked. “I am also a past President and Chairman of The Board for the Pennsylvania Association of Licensed Investigators.” In addition to being regularly interviewed and used as a subject matter expert by local and national television networks, Jeff is a contributing author for Advanced Private Investigation: A Manual of Advanced Investigative Skills for the Private Investigator. Jeff has also appeared on CNN Death Row Stories and the ID Channel, discussing his investigative perspective regarding featured cases on these televised programs.

Jeff said his work is gratifying, especially when the outcome of the investigation results in a wrongfully convicted individual

being proven innocent. He did say that, however, the investigations he conducts often don’t always have happy endings. “While our investigative results are not always the most pleasant, they are based on the truth and solid facts. Hitting It Out of the Park! Congratulations, NELL for Hosting the PA State Little League Championship

The reviews are in! Newtown Edgmont Little League hosted an impressive and exciting Pennsylvania State Championship tournament in July. We knew this summer would be especially exciting for Newtown Edgmont Little League because the Pennsylvania Little League Baseball State Championship tournament took place on our home fields July 25th-31st. It was the first time since 1996 that NELL was selected, and what an action-packed week it was!

District 19 is home to some of the most competitive baseball in the state of Pennsylvania. Our baseball program competes for District and State Championships, Eastern Region Finals and ultimately, the International World Series every year.

The tournament is part of the Little League journey. This series, for 11- and 12-yearold players, brought the top eight teams in the state to NELL. Board Member Mike McCalla said that the entire week could not have been any better. “It was great baseball

to watch for not only the attending teams but for our own community,” he remarked. “It has definitely made our NELL players hungry to get to that level someday.”

The tournament champions, Media Little League, dominated East Side Little League out of West Chester with an impressive 12-1 win and was crowned on NELL’s Field 1 on July 31st. That win advanced them to the Mid-Atlantic Regionals in Bristol, CT, with the ultimate goal of making it to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.

The tournament kicked off with an opening ceremony on July 25th. Former Major League player, and current Philadelphia Phillies Color Commentator, Ben Davis was the keynote speaker at the

event which included player packet distribution, meet and greet opportunities and catering by Luigi & Giovanni’s.

If you enjoyed a game or two during the tournament, you noticed that the Board and volunteers had spent the past three years doing extensive renovations. “We completed a major and much-needed renovation to give our players a top-notch experience while also preparing for the tournament,” said NELL President Daren Grande. “Visitors enjoyed a new snack bar and new bathrooms, new dugouts and field improvements!” Such improvements included a complete overhaul of Field 1 with new fencing, scoreboard, backstop and renovations to the Peterson Building behind home plate.

Having Little League neighbors from all over Pennsylvania descend into NELL’s complex for the PA State Tournament gave the Board and volunteers another reason to push forward with improvements. Daren said they saw a few thousand people visit the complex during the weeklong tournament.

Visitors who have come to NELL have always been amazed by the complex, which offers a memorable experience for players and families. It’s an impressive layout of eight meticulously maintained fields, six outdoor batting cages, a

15,000-square-foot indoor facility, a snack bar that rivals area restaurants, and plenty of on-site parking.

Daren would like to thank our community and all who worked hard over the past three years to make this tournament one for the record books. “NELL’s nomination and selection by Little League to host the PA State Tournament was a great honor and responsibility,” explained Daren. “We know this opportunity would not have been possible without the steadfast support and volunteer spirit that has surrounded this organization for the past 70 years.” N S

Watch For Scammers Calling About Employee Retention Credits

The IRS has intensified its efforts to investigate and combat deceptive promoters of the Employee Retention Credit (ERC) which specifically targets small businesses. These promoters employ aggressive marketing tactics to lure small businesses, offering assistance in claiming substantial tax credits through the ERC. Unfortunately, their advice is often misleading or exaggerated. These unscrupulous promoters make bold promises to businesses, assuring them that they qualify for the credit, irrespective of the actual eligibility requirements. Once the unsuspecting businesses

file their applications, the scammers vanish, having received an upfront commission based on the exaggerated size of the tax credit. However, when the IRS reviews the applications, it frequently denies the application due to ineligibility, leaving the businesses not only without the promised credit but also out of the commission they paid to the promoters. In some unfortunate cases, the businesses may have to repay the entire claimed credit to the IRS.

The IRS is determined to protect small businesses from falling victim to such fraudulent schemes and is taking measures to identify and take action against these illicit promoters. The best way to ensure proper eligibility before applying for the ERC is to work with licensed and experienced tax professionals.

A More User-Friendly IRS

As you may know, in recent years the IRS has earned a reputation for often being difficult for taxpayers to communicate with. IRS Management is seeking to change that. The IRS wants taxpayers to experience the same level of functionality with their online taxpayer accounts as they would with an online bank account. Some of the planned improvements include:

• Enhanced client management capabilities for tax professionals, allowing them to view and manage payments as well as a secure two-way messaging system.

• The creation of online business accounts which will allow businesses to view balances, make payments online and conduct tax checks.

• The new services will also allow taxpayers to submit several tax forms through their mobile devices in time for the 2024 filing season.

In addition to the new dedication towards taxpayer accessibility, the IRS is ending one of its older and more infamous practices, “The Unannounced Visit.”

The decision to permanently suspend the practice of unannounced visits to homes and businesses with significant unpaid tax debt is immediately in effect. The influx of scammers impersonating agents both online and in person has created much confusion and concerns related to the safety of both taxpayers and IRS agents. The moral is “Beware if someone knocks on your door and claims to be an IRS Agent.” Immediately call your CPA or attorney. N S

Time For Core Aeration and Overseeding

Summer’s warm temps are coming to an end and fall is quickly approaching. This is the time for you to seriously consider core aeration and overseeding to improve the health of your lawn. To fully enhance your lawn, these two treatments should be performed annually.

Core aeration is a method of lawn treatment where a machine with hollow tines mechanically removes plugs of soil and thatch from a lawn. Overseeding, on the other hand, involves no soil penetration, and rather plants grass seed directly into the lawn. Core areation reduces soil compaction, whereas over-seeding improves the quality, variety and color of your grass.

Overseeding introduces new grass seed, which fills in bare or thin areas and helps thicken existing turf. Overseeding also builds resistance to disease by incorporating different seed blends, reducing the risk of disease that can wipe out entire lawns. Together, aeration and overseeding help reduce weeds that tend to grow in areas where grass is thin. A thick lawn is defensive against weeds.

Core aeration and overseeding help improve your lawn in many ways. For example, aeration reduces soil compaction and allows grass roots to grow deeper and locate moisture during hot/dry summer months. It also reduces thatch caused by grass clippings from mowing, and creates a less favorable environment for pests and diseases to thrive.

Soil compaction can occur when there is regular traffic on your lawn, such as children playing or dogs going for walks. In addition, newly-built homes also tend to experience compacted soil from the construction traffic.

If you think your lawn may have soil compaction and could benefit from aeration and overseeding, here are some quick tests you can conduct. Examine several small patches of grass. Shallow roots indicate compaction, which results in water and nutrients not being able to travel as easily to the roots. If the grass is not growing as quickly as it should, or if it is taking on a yellow color, then there’s a high chance that the lawn has compacted soil. Most residents who are on a full fertilization schedule benefit tremendously from core aeration and overseeding. The remaining fall fertilization applications that happen after this service will help maximize germination of the new seed throughout fall and winter months. This results in a lawn that’s ready for a great start in the spring. If you’re not on a full fertilization application schedule, consider doing so for the following season. At least six fertilizer applications are required to see best results.

Consider core aeration and overseeding for your lawn, especially if you think your lawn is experiencing soil compaction. With these methods in place, your lawn will be back to growing lush, healthy grass. N S

Marple Memorial American Legion Post 805: Veterans Strengthening America

For the millions of men and women who answer the call of uniformed service, the adjustment of returning to civilian life often produces changes in support networks and relationships. Communities play an instrumental role in helping veterans adjust to these changes and helping them feel valued. Here in the Marple Newtown community, Marple Memorial Post 805 of the American Legion, one of

actions are to support four pillars: Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism and Children and Youth. Its mission is to enhance the well-being of America's veterans, their families, our military, and our communities through their devotion to mutual helpfulness.

Marple Memorial Post 805 of the American Legion is a place of support and a voice for all Veterans, whether they served

veteran, ended up joining too, and since then, he’s held several positions there, most recently Commander from 20212023. From making physical changes to the building to retaining and adding new members, his contributions to the post did not go unnoticed. In July, Gerry was given the Commander of the Year award at the Pennsylvania Department Convention in Harrisburg. “I enjoyed my time as Commander,” said Gerry. “Military service fosters a sense of camaraderie and trust between service members that continues even after their military service is complete. It has also been a great way to give back to the community.”

14,000 posts worldwide, is an influential, effective and dependable advocate of veteran affairs.

The American Legion was chartered in 1919 by Congress as a veteran’s organization focused on service to veterans, active-duty service members and communities. Veterans of World War I originally formed the ranks of the Legion, but it quickly grew into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the U.S. and has more than 2.4 million members worldwide. With the motto of “Veterans Strengthening America,” all of the American Legion’s

as far back as World War II or are still on active duty. Members meet on the second Wednesday of each month to socialize and enjoy dinner together and plan their support of fellow veterans and community. “Being a member of the legion gives service members a chance to share experience unique to the military and continue support of fellow veterans, their community and country,” said Gerry Nail, the First Vice Commander.

Gerry joined the post seven years ago after driving his neighbor, a Korean War Vet and Post 805 member of 55 years, to a meeting. Gerry, himself an Army

Running the Post is more than a one-person job and in addition to the Commander, there are 11 other officers. On August 9, Post 805 held its installation of new officers who fulfill specific roles and will work together for Post 805’s success. Lucille Madalion, the new Commander, will focus on increasing the Post’s outreach and support to veterans in Marple and all of Delaware County.

Serving the community is at the very heart of the American Legion’s core beliefs and Post 805 carries out its mission by not only helping vets transition to their communities but through its many community programs. Its members spend time at both the Newtown Square VA Clinic and the Coatesville VA Hospital. “One of the biggest benefits of vets helping each other is that we have an understanding of what the veteran is going through. Whether it is

financial difficulties due to service-related injuries, or problems obtaining the benefits that veterans are entitled to, someone who has been through that has a level of personal experience and empathy that cannot be taught,” Gerry explained. Programs such as scholarships, Boys State, Girls State, State Police Youth Week, Veteran trips and blood drives as well as local events like sponsoring the Marple Easter Egg Roll and Memorial Day Parade, make a difference for our veterans, veterans’ families and the local youth each year. Boys and Girls State are programs the Post is very proud to support. Boys and Girls State is one of the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students. Founded in 1935, Boys State was the idea of two Illinois Legionnaires. The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a separate but similar program for young women called Girls State. The men and women of the American Legion who take the time to volunteer in promoting American Legion programs and activities are what allows it to make a difference locally, across the nation and around the world. “Serving others is who we are and what we do,” said Gerry.

The American Legion Post 805, with support of two Delaware County Marine Veteran Detachments, provides military funeral honors to those Delaware County veterans whose families request their support, to include the firing of three honor volleys at the veteran’s service. All eligible veterans, including military retirees, are entitled to military funeral honors with the playing of taps and the folding and presentation of the American flag.

Post 805 also provides a veteran service medallion with a US flag placed by the veteran’s headstone. Gerry expressed his concern that veterans’ families have their loved one’s military discharge paperwork; usually Department of Defense form 214 (DD214), indicating an honorable discharge. “This form allows for the military funeral service, funeral flag and several other benefits. For all benefits, this form is the veteran’s most important service document,” he explained. “The Post is glad to help veterans get their discharge paperwork if they do not have it.”

Members of Post 805 also take pride in participating in our local parades. “We are pleased to sponsor the Memorial Day parade every year to honor our fallen comrades,” said Demetrius Spiropoulos, Second Vice Commander. “It’s a great way to connect with the community.” Local veterans lead the parade along with the Broomall Fire Company, Police, EMS and Army vehicles as well as the Paxon Hollow Middle School and Marple Newtown High School Tiger Marching Bands, local boy and girl scout troops, Marple Civic Youth, and other local performers. There is always a closing ceremony led by the Commander held at Post 805 followed by a rifle ceremony and taps. For the first time this year, the Post provided 200 meals for township residents to sit and eat while recognizing Marple’s fallen soldiers. The veterans also participate in the Veterans Day Parade in Media as well as Marple Newtown’s Fourth of July Parade.

It was George Washington who said that “the willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation.” “It’s so important to raise awareness of our military and to honor them for the sacrifices

they made for our country,” said Gerry. For more information about Marple Memorial Post 805 of the American Legion, please visit www.LegionPost805.org. N S

Congratulations, Media Little League: The Road to the Little League World Series

Your Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors would like to congratulate the players, coaches, families and friends of Media Little League on their trip to the Little League World Series.

It began with exciting and dominating performances during the Pennsylvania State Championship tournament in July. Our own Newtown Edgmont Little League hosted the event that ended with Media’s impressive 12-1 win over East Side Little League from West Chester.

The team then headed to the Mid-Atlantic Regionals in Bristol, CT where they won their first game easily, setting the stage for a final game that punched their ticket to Williamsport to compete

against the best teams in the International World Series. The team lost their first game against the South West Region team 2 - 1, then went on to win 5 - 3 over New England before losing their final game 7 - 2 to the Metro Region team. Although we were hoping to see Media Little League bring home the series championship, we are so proud of the players, coaches and parents who gave us all such a memorable experience. N S

Physical Therapy Is a Career of Many Opportunities

Making a decision to work in physical therapy is just the first in a series of choices that can lead professionals to very different places. Pretty quickly after that initial decision, there are more to make. What kind of people do you want to work with? Where do you want to practice? How specialized do you want to get?

Physical therapists work with all types of people - sports physical therapists work with athletes, helping them recover from injuries and improve performance through exercise and hands-on tech niques. Orthopedic physical therapists work in various settings and therapists work with infants and children providing developmental assessments and helping them improve their gross motor skills. Rehab therapists work with head trauma and stroke patients. Physical therapists are also part of the team in wound and burn care, pelvic floor issues, chronic edema and long term Covid care. They also work in all types of places - there are physical therapy jobs in nursing homes, hospitals, outpatient clinics and schools. Physical therapists will provide care wherever the people are who need it. An even more specialized professional may work only in the ICU with critical care patients, in a factory doing industrial rehabilitation and ergonomics, or in a women’s health clinic. Most physical therapy careers start in a general role, working with all types of different patients. In a large health system, you may even rotate between settings. But as therapists find the people and setting they prefer, they may focus on a specialty area of practice. Working in physical therapy doesn’t just cause people to grow professionally, it creates personal growth too. You have to have compassion and empathy when you work with ill or injured people. You have to work as a part of a team. You need sales skillsmost people aren’t going to want to make changes in their routines, or do the prescribed exercises at home.

PTs can also improve their business skills. Many advance out of the clinical setting and into a management role. Some start their own practices, or a company in a field related to physical therapy like wellness, performance, injury prevention or population health for large corporations.

Harvest Festival at Garrett Williamson:

Did you know that Newtown Square is home to a sprawling 240acre hidden gem on Bishop Hollow Rd? Perhaps you’ve noticed a few cows grazing in a pasture on your way to the Newtown Edgmont Little League fields. Or you may have seen the sign on the side of the road that says Garrett Williamson. But have you ever wondered what is tucked back around the curve and down that long driveway?

If you’re curious, you’ll have the opportunity to find out this fall as Garrett Williamson hosts its 3rd annual Harvest Festival. Everyone is invited to the family-friendly festivities from 11am–3pm on Saturday, October 14th (rain date: Sunday, October 15th).

The Harvest Festival will be an afternoon of fun for the whole family. Visitors will enjoy hayrides, pumpkin decorating, barn tours, children’s games and activities, garden tours and nature hikes. Pumpkins, vegetables and flowers will also be available for purchase and Urban Roots Farm with be open for visitors. And if you’re hungry, there will be food trucks on hand and refreshments will also be available for purchase.

Last year’s Harvest Festival helped raise money for Garrett Williamson’s Agricultural Education Programs. Garrett Williamson is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to nurture loving and respectful connections between people and nature by using their extraordinary property as a dynamic canvas for learning. All proceeds from this year’s event will directly benefit and support this mission.

Since the mid-1980s, the Garrett Williamson preserve has been home to the Garrett’s Way Childcare and Learning Center, serving infants six weeks of age through kindergarten. And every summer, there’s Camp Garrett, which serves youth ages 5 through 15 years. These award-winning programs take place on a beautiful 240-acre farm that raises alpacas, horses, sheep, chickens and goats. This land also grows crops of fruits, vegetables and flowers, and serves as an educational space for our community.

Giselle Cosentino is the Director of Community Initiatives at Garrett Williamson and is excited to invite the community to explore and enjoy this hidden gem. “Last year’s event attracted

Celebrating Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur: A Special Time for the Jewish Community

September is a special time for the Jewish community. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins on September 15, 2023, at sundown and it concludes at nightfall on September 17, 2023. It’s packed with mitzvahs, special foods and traditions, and it’s one of the most important holidays in the Jewish calendar. Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, follows 10 days later on September 24.

Rosh Hashanah is a subdued and contemplative holiday. It commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday. During Rosh Hashanah circular foods such as Challah bread braided in a circle, are served to represent the year. Honey cake is also a tradition, as are apples and honey, a tradition that dates back hundreds of years.

The time between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is a time of teshuvah, a Hebrew term to describe the act of self-reflection and turning inward, “We look back and ask ourselves: ‘What could we have done better?’ and ‘Who can we say sorry to’?” explained Rabbi Janine Jankovitz, who has served as the Rabbi at Congregation Beth El - Ner Tamid in Broomall for the past three years.

Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, begins at sundown on September 24 and lasts until sundown the following day. Yom Kippur is a day devoted to self-examination, and the chance

to begin the New Year with a clean slate. “By this day, we are expected to have gotten our repentance in order,” added Rabbi Jankovitz. “We plead to God to forgive us for anything we weren’t able to do in the past year. It’s a special feeling that is both solemn and joyous at the same time.” “For the Jewish community this is our holiest time of year,” added Marissa Kimmel, the Member and Youth Engagement Coordinator at Temple Sholom. “We are starting fresh for the New Year.”

Congregation Beth El - Ner Tamid and Temple Sholom are both located in Marple and are places where the Jewish community can gather to give thanks, offer respect, and stay connected to the ancient and modern traditions that shape Jewish life and identity. Congregation Beth El - Ner Tamid, located on Paxon Hollow Road, is an inclusive Jewish community blending the traditions of the Conservative movement with Reconstructionist teachings. They will offer online services the first evening on September 15th and in-person services on the 16th and 17th of the month. On September 17th, members can gather at New Ardmore Park for Tashlich, an outdoor tradition whose origins go back to the Middle Ages. “The goal of Tashlich is to cast our sins into a body of water,” Rabbi Jankovitz added. “It’s a beautiful service where children can be outside and there will be songs of hope for the New Year.”

with Jewish Family and Children’s Services, the Mensch Making Academy and members of Congregation Beth El - Ner Tamid also volunteer their time at Our Closet in Broomall, an organization that provides clothing and dignity to people in need throughout Philadelphia and the suburbs.

Temple Sholom, located on Church Rd, is the only Reform congregation in Delaware County. Known for its long-standing practice of inclusion, they serve members throughout their cycles of life; from infancy through death. They welcome interfaith, interracial and LGBTQIA families as well. “Our clergy want everyone to feel like this is a home away from home,” said Marissa. Temple Sholom has an active pre-school, a religious school and numerous programs for all ages including a Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and Hilltoppers and a Culture Club for empty nesters. Social justice and activism are important to the congregation and they partner with Kids Against Hunger as well as the Life Center of Delaware County.

Rabbi Jankovitz said she is proud to be part of such a committed, warm and inviting Jewish community. Their congregation embraces all identities, genders, races, ethnicities, ages and abilities. This coming year, Congregation Beth El - Ner Tamid has the honor of being selected for the Scientists in Synagogues cohort. “Through classes, seminars, lectures, videos and writings, this program helps create a vision of religion that embraces critical thinking and scientific inquiry,” she explained. “It also gives meaning to people’s lives and helps them make a positive impact on society.” In partnership

At Temple Sholom, the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are filled with beautiful and inspired music, meaningful worship, engaging sermons and memorable family experiences. Adult, family and tot services will be offered including a Tashlich service at Merry Place Park on September 16th. “It’s our holiest time of the year,” said Marissa. “Although everyone observes a little differently, it’s a meaningful time to turn inward.” You can find a list of their programs and services on their website and Facebook pages. All services are free to anyone including non-members. Due to a high volume, they request that tickets to high holiday services be requested in advance by contacting the synagogue.

Riding Public Transportation – in 1822!

How long does it take to get from 4th and Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia to the Greentree Building at Gay and High Streets in West Chester? If you follow the directions given by Google, you will head south on I- 95 and cover a distance of 33.4 miles to get you there in about 42 minutes. But what if it is 1822, and you are starting off from the Cross Keys Tavern at 4th and Chestnut, and heading for the Green Tree Tavern in West Chester? The good news is that by simply following Market Street and then the West Chester road, the distance is about 26 miles. However, the trip in 1822 would take you a bit longer. As reported in the book “Historic Newtown Township”:

“In 1822, Messrs. Taylor and Peters, proprietors, announced that the stage would depart from the Cross Keys every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, at 7 o’clock promptly, change at Fox’s and arrive at 1 o’clock same day at Benjamin and Abner Miller’s in West Chester. On alternate days the coach returned to the city. ‘Fare through $1.25. All baggage at the risk of the owners. Newspapers and packages carefully forwarded as usual.”

If you noticed the stop at Fox’s, that is the Newtown Square connection. The old Fox Chase Inn (still standing at 3405 West Chester Pike and currently housing the law firm of Lamb McErlane) was a stagecoach stop for many years on the line running from Philadelphia to West Chester and points west. After a stagecoach ride of about three hours out of Philadelphia, the stage would pull into the Fox Chase Inn. Passengers could get out, stretch their legs, and go inside for food and refreshment, while the horses were cared for and watered, and any packages and mail for Newtown residents were delivered to the tavern owner. The through passengers would then climb back into the stagecoach for the remaining three hour trip to West Chester. Going from Philadelphia to West Chester in 1822 by this relatively quick

Best Practices in Funeral Etiquette

When we lose a loved one, or a close family member or a friend goes through the loss of someone close to them, it is important to participate in the celebration and commemoration of that person’s life. The following tips outline some basic etiquette to follow when attending a funeral service.

What to Say?

When it comes to sharing words with the grieving, less is often more. It can be difficult to find the right words to say when one has lost a loved one. When speaking to the deceased’s relatives, be sure to focus on a fond memory or story. Try to avoid phrases such as “I am sorry for your loss,” or “They are in a better place now.” Instead, focus on the positives and express your support for them. Sometimes just being present and understanding can speak louder than a long-winded story.

What to Wear?

It does not have to be black; any dark color semiformal attire is suitable. Be conservative. It’s polite to wear neutral colors to avoid possibly offending the grieving family.

Where Should I Sit?

The first couple of rows are reserved for immediate family. You can fill in behind those rows. If you arrive late and the service has begun, it is polite to sit in the back rows to not disturb others mourning. If at a cemetery, there will most likely be a row of chairs. Those are reserved for immediate family.

What Not to Do?

It is important to be respectful. Joking, talking and using your phone during the service is impolite. You should refrain from taking photos at the service or at the gravesite and wait until all the formal services have completed.

It can be difficult to attend a funeral service. The loss of a loved one or friend results in many heavy hearts and conversations. Following these tips will help you know what to do during a difficult time and allow the grieving to focus on their family and appreciate the funeral service. N S
