Cheer on our local runners and celebrate the birth of our nation with cheering for freedom and happy days that are here again.

Meet Jake and Sarah Olimpi: A couple who loves to laugh, sing and make beautiful music. They truly know how to live life by design, and they work hard to plant the seeds for a beautiful future.

Their story is uplifting, inspiring and reminds you to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

Many of you may already know Jake because he and his two sisters grew up and went to school here. His family first lived in Newtown Square, then moved to Broomall when Jake was in high school.

He attended Culbertson Elementary School, Paxon Hollow Middle School and graduated from Marple Newtown High School, where he spent most of his time in the music department. Jake was in the Concert Band, Choir, Orchestra, Handbells, Musical Pit, and Drama Club. He also played tenor drums in the drumline for the Marple Newtown Tiger Marching Band.

There was never a doubt that music was Jake’s future. After graduating from Marple Newtown, he was accepted at West Chester University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a concentration in Double Bass — the largest and lowest-pitched bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra. Jake then continued his studies at West Chester, earning a Master’s degree in Music Technology in 2019.

Jake’s love for music and education led him to the Oxford Area School District as a Music Teacher and Choir Director.

After three years there, he learned of a position right back where it all began: the music department at Marple Newtown Senior High School. Jake currently teaches Music Technology courses along with Guitar and Music Theory. And it should 6

come as no surprise that he is now the Director of the Tiger Marching Band, String and Chamber Orchestras, Steel Drum and Indoor Percussion Ensembles, Concert Percussion and Jazz Lab Band. He also is the advisor for the Tri-M Music Honors Society. When you think of Tiger Pride, you think of Jake Olimpi.

To say Jake’s blood runs orange and black is an understatement, and it seems as though Sarah doesn’t mind “playing” right along. The first thing you notice when you pull up to their home is a bright orange mailbox with black numbers!

Although Sarah is originally from Rochester, New York, she said that Newtown Square reminds her a lot of where she grew up with her parents and her older sister. Sarah attended grade school and middle school in Walworth, NY, and graduated from Ruben A. Cirillo High School, where she participated in Choir, Select Choir, Concert Band, and the Theater program. She also played on her school’s Softball team, and in her Senior year, she was voted both Homecoming Queen and Prom Queen.

Sarah has always had an eye for design, so after high school, she headed to New York City. She attended Fashion Institute of Technology and earned her degree in Marketing and Communications. After graduation, Sarah moved to Brooklyn, where she began working as the Home Production Assistant for Better Homes & Gardens magazine. “I loved my time in NYC,” Sarah said. “I was able to meet and work with many amazingly creative and talented people early in my career.” One of those people was her former boss, designer Eddie Ross, who was a mentor and is now a dear friend.

messaged me,” Jake said, “asking what subjects I taught, and about the three adorable cats in my profile picture.” He told her that he was a music teacher, and that his cats were triplets that he rescued from Providence Animal Shelter. “I was planning on adopting just one cat, but there was no way I could break up siblings,” he explained. He named them Hall, Anne and Oats, and he said they are not only adorable, they’re also the friendliest cats in town.

Sarah’s blossoming career brought her to Philadelphia in 2015.

She began working as a Project Manager for Terrain, whose upscale home and garden locations feature native plants, seasonal decor, outdoor lighting and gifts for every occasion. “It’s really cool to work with a creative and collaborative team!” explained Sarah. “And I love learning more about plants and gardening that make up the Terrain garden lifestyle brand.”

For Sarah, sourcing and selecting plants and products for her home is something very special. “My dad owned his own interior plant service in upstate New York. We even had a greenhouse attached to our house.” Sarah’s father passed away the same year she began working at Terrain. She is sure he gifted her with a green thumb of her own. “My dad is an inspiration for my houseplant obsession,” she said laughing. “Jake and I have over 50 plants and counting!”

Like many millennial couples, Jake and Sarah met online, in November 2016, through the dating app, Bumble. “Sarah

Resident Feature Sarah then told Jake about her rescue pup, Bolt. “I adopted Bolt when I moved to Philadelphia,” she said. “I knew I needed a companion who loved all the same things I do: food, snuggling and people.” Bolt is a Corgi/Black Lab mix who was born with one ear that’s permanently up and the other permanently down. Sarah said that the moment she saw him at the shelter, she knew he was just perfect. “Bolt is the sweetest, most loved pup around,” she boasted. “And he was awarded the most improved and most handsome in his dog training class, of course!”

Jake and Sarah’s mutual love for music and animals was just the beginning. The two arranged to meet at The Standard Taproom in Philadelphia, and they immediately hit it off. They shared their life stories over drinks and laughs, but the night ended with Jake getting a parking ticket. On their second date — bowling — they discovered they had much more in common than they had originally suspected. Jake said, “We really knew we were meant for each other when we learned that we both loved the show, Pimp my Ride, a series on MTV where cars in poor condition are restored and customized.”

Sarah learned that Jake enjoys gardening and woodworking, and that they both love spending most of their time outdoors, enjoying nature and going for walks. They also discovered that they had similar childhoods. “We notice so many similarities with our families,” Sarah remarked. “Like both of our mothers are Jewish, but our fathers are not. And in both of our childhood homes, we would drag the piano bench to the table for extra seating on holidays.”

The chemistry between Jake and Sarah was undeniable, so in 2018 they decided to start building their life together. They purchased a condo in Marple Woods, close to Jake’s family, and started planning their wedding. “We were supposed to have our wedding in June 2021, but because of the ongoing global

pandemic, we pushed it to April 2022,” explained Jake. “We felt it was best to make sure our family and friends will be able to celebrate with us to the fullest.”

Although the formal ceremony is on hold for now, Sarah is very excited about planning the celebration. “Jake and I will be married at Eddie Ross’ event space, Maximalist Studios, in Norristown,” she said. “The venue is an old textile factory building turned into a space with white brick walls and an extensive prop house full of assorted chic furnishings and accents.” Their vision is to share their big day with the ones they love most, surrounded by lots of plants and dancing the night away.

restrictions have been lifted. They have plans to host backyard barbecues and attend community events like the new Friday afternoons Farmers Market at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church.

They also plan on extending their green thumbs to help the folks with Newtown Square in Bloom keep our community beautiful.

For Jake, living and working in the same town allows him the opportunity to connect on a deeper level with his students and their families. “Because I live here,” Jake said, “I feel as though I’m a better educator and mentor, and I can more clearly know what my students and this community want and need from our music department.” Jake also wants us to know that he is very grateful for the tremendous community support.

Sarah says they can’t go anywhere around town without someone recognizing Jake. “Mr. Olimpi is pretty popular around here,” she joked. “I tell Jake that when I officially become Mrs. Olimpi next year, I’ll be famous, too!”

Sometimes, the most challenging moments present you with opportunities — if you’re willing to look. This was the case in November 2020, when a house that was absolutely perfect for them came on the market. A mid-century modern ranch home that needed a lot of work was certainly going to be a massive project, but Sarah and Jake were ready to restore it back to its glory.

“We have really enjoyed bringing our home back to life and filling it with so many cool pieces of furniture and decor from the 1950s and ’60s.” said Sarah. They both remarked that the timing of their purchase was perfect because the interior renovations happened during the winter months and now, they can focus on designing a beautiful backyard. Jake set up a woodworking studio in the garage, and built Sarah a greenhouse.

Their plan is to create a beautiful outdoor space with native plants, a vegetable garden, and fruit trees like the lemon tree they recently planted.

Their home is in the St. Albans section of town. “We love this neighborhood!” said Jake. “It’s quiet and charming, and just steps away from some of our favorite local businesses like Luigi & Giovanni’s and Bunny Hare’s.” Sarah and Jake are looking forward to meeting more neighbors now that the pandemic

Cooling Options for Your Home Warm temperatures are finally here again, and now you have to deal with keeping your house cool on the hottest days.

Have you spent years with open windows and fans that did little or nothing to keep you cool? If you’d like to install a system that provides cooling for your family, you have several options.

CENTRAL COOLING If you have a furnace already, this option is the simplest and most common choice because the required ductwork is already in place. It consists of a duct coil connected to an outdoor condensing unit. The biggest benefit is that you can cool your entire house, which helps with efficiency and cooling costs.

DUCTLESS MINI SPLIT If you don’t have a central furnace with ductwork, a ductless mini split can provide cooling to one room at a time.

If you have an open concept layout, one unit can take care of your kitchen, living room and dining room if it’s sized right.

Smaller rooms will need separate units, and that’s the #1 downside of a decentralized system.

Multi split units, which have one outdoor unit and multiple indoor units, can serve most or all of your house depending on how much you are willing to spend and how many spaces need cooling.

WINDOW UNIT Window units are packaged cooling systems that steal a portion of your window to provide cooling to that particular space.

You are limited to only the space in which the unit is installed.

Window units are typically not very aesthetically pleasing.

GEOTHERMAL In general, geothermal cooling works hand in hand with heating, so if the climate where you live is very hot, you may not benefit from this system except under certain circumstances.

Geothermal cooling is expensive, but with the right equipment and conditions, it can benefit you and your family for many years with minimal cost beyond the initial installation.

Since 8th grade, Matt has regularly and consistently demonstrated Excellence in Service to many local communities! He’s a frequent volunteer for Kids Against Hunger (KAH), and in lieu of a Christmas gift from his parents last year, he asked his parents to make a donation to KAH in his name. Their donation was matched by another generous donor who shares Matt’s desire to support KAH’s mission. He also participates in food drives that help several local churches keep their food banks supplied for their outreach ministries. When Matt was in 4th grade, he lost the tip of his little finger on his right hand in a swingset accident. That got him interested in how prosthetics and implants help improve the qualify of life for people who’ve lost a leg or an arm. 4TH TIME’S THE CHARM A homeowner had been waiting for clean, healthy indoor air since she purchased the home 40+ years ago. Another waterproofing company’s three attempts to seal the walls had failed.

Even an oversized commercial dehumidifier hadn’t solved the problem. The green solution, which was to install window vents and new correctly pitched aluminum rain gutters and self-cleaning gutter guards, significantly improved the indoor air quality. The commercial dehumidifier will be resold, recouping some of the solution’s cost..

BUNGALOW RANCH HOME’S BASEMENT IS FINALLY USABLE! The basement in a bungalow ranch home offered additional square feet, but wet floors kept it as a storage room only, not the home gym and attractive laundry room the homeowners wanted. The existing sump pump was retained, and a new mini French drain was installed and attached to the pump, saving costs! The 70-year-old concrete flooring, which was removed and recycled at a local masonry supply, was transformed into road gravel and concrete. They now have a healthy clean space to use any way they like, with a very reasonable cost-effective budget.

A TOP-DOWN SOLUTION The upper attic in a 60-year-old split-level home needed upgraded insulation, to stop condensation and nail rust that had caused loose shingles and moisture penetration. Cellulose fiber, which offers uniformity of coverage, fire resistance and triple the density of glass fiber, was blown directly over the original fiberglass insulation. This encapsulation effectively stopped heat loss at the joist. It also reduced contamination by glass dust and mice feces in the split level’s lower attic. The home is now quieter and has less condensation. (Recycled newspaper has proven to do a far better job than rolled batts at staying warm, dry and green!)

A WHIFF OF FRESH, CLEAN AIR FOR AN 1860 CLAPBOARD COLONIAL Sinkholes, clogged downspouts and decomposing mulch around the property were producing greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor — and a very undesirable smell when the windows were open. The green solution was to install new rain gutters and also properly grade the property for effective water management. The result is a dry, sweet-smelling basement.

Blush Salon is having a birthday! Join us in congratulating Owners Michele Quinn and Brittany Naab and the Blush team, on a decade of dedication to quality, consistent, authentic hair and skincare for the whole family.

Meet Michele and Brittany. They are not just Co-Owners of Blush Salon, they’re lifelong friends. “Brittany and I grew up down the street from each other,” Michele said. “We went to school together, graduated together and have always worked in salons together.” So, when Michele was considering opening her own place, she said there was no doubt Brittany would join her.

In 2011, they set their sights on a prime location in Newtown Square, and built their business from the ground up. What should the salon be called? The name came a bit unexpectedly when Michele was at a paint store browsing through color palettes. One particular shade of pink caught her eye: blush. “I loved the color and thought it would be a great neutral name for the salon,” she explained. “Blush is makeup, but it can also happen naturally when you see someone you love.”

The salon is lively and vibrant. The lobby is inviting, the receptionists are friendly and the music instantly puts you in a good mood. But step beyond the front desk and you’ll see where the magic happens. The salon floor is bustling with consultations, cuts, coloring, conversations and lots of smiles.

Blush is a full-service salon open seven days a week, offering haircuts and styles for women, men and kids. Specialty services include makeup application, award-winning spray tans, and skincare such as waxing and brow and lash tint. If you’re looking for color, the stylists at Blush are on top of the latest trends including balayage and highlights. Blush also has a traveling bridal team, and recently added hand-tied hair extensions to the services they offer.

Brittany heads up Blush’s Bridal Team. The Blushing Brides team offers in-salon consultations and services, but also travels to wedding locations to perform hair and makeup services for bridal parties. “We typically book about 85 weddings each year in the tri-state area,” said Brittany. “Last year was a bit challenging during the pandemic, but we’re making up for it now with over 150 weddings booked!”

Staying current with trends, training and continuing education are top priorities at the salon. “Our stylists are home-grown,” said Michele, “meaning that from Day 1, they are placed in a hands-on training program for six to eight months.” She explained that after completion, stylists are promoted and move to the next level of training. “We are very goal-oriented,” said Michele. “Our stylists know that opportunities are endless and they always have room to grow within our company.”

In addition to Blush’s in-house program, the team travels every year to the Redken Exchange in New York and the Redken Symposium in Las Vegas, to learn the latest in styles, trends and products. They are proud to be a member of Redken’s Elite partner program, where all Blush employees are dedicated to Redken education, product knowledge and have the highest expertise in Redken services.

Brittany and Michele both agree that the most rewarding part of their jobs is being there for their guests in their daily lives, but also for their major life events. Brittany said, “We get to share mostly happy moments, but even in times of sadness, people still want their hair to look good.”

Michele said they are looking forward to bringing back special programs for the community to learn about hair and skincare.

Their most popular event is “Beers and Braids” — an afternoon for dads to learn how to braid their daughters’ hair and to meet other local dads and daughters. Another popular event they will be bringing back is “Girls, Curls and Cocktails,” which is an evening for local ladies to learn how to style their own hair for a night out.

From childhood friends to business partners, Michele and Brittany have shared many special moments together, and that now includes being mothers. Brittany and her husband Chris have two boys: 2-year-old Christopher Jude and 9-month-old Michael Anthony. Michele and her partner Dan Kelly have a 17-month-old daughter named Quinn. Brittany and Michele’s families live near each other so it seems the tradition of growing up together will continue. Will the scissors be passed down to the next generation? Chronic Stress Can Take Years Off Your Life To say that the past 16 months have been stressful would be an understatement. Bring your family and friends together and fire up the grill: July is National Grilling Month! Backyard barbecues, festival parking lots and fire pits on the beach all become places to create delicious meals over a gas grill, coal bed or wood fire.

But sometimes the traditional American BBQ fare — burgers and hot dogs — can lose their appeal.

So, how can we liven up our gatherings to offer tasty options?

We asked the Experts and Sponsors of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors for their advice.

Outdoor barbecuing has officially become an extension of the kitchen, due in large part to social distancing requirements over the past 16 months. Grilling is a great way to bring friends and family together and to celebrate returning to “life as we knew it.” Scott Magness, Owner of Scott’s Fireplace Products, is an Expert on how to make grilling literally push-button easy. “Compared to charcoal grills and wood fire pits, gas grills and gas fire pits are not messy, and can start with the push of a button,” Scott said. His Manager Ray pointed out that a wood fire pit requires prepping kindling, and wood fires and charcoal grills both typically require a lot of shifting the wood or charcoal around, to maintain the desired temperature. “A variety of cuisines can easily be prepared on a gas grill,” said Ray, “because temperatures can be controlled with pinpoint accuracy and can have a hot side and a cooler side by

simply turning different knobs.” Other advantages of gas grills: There’s no messy charcoal or ashes to clean up. And when it’s time to call it a night, you just turn the knobs off and that’s it!

Co-Owner Luigi (Lou) Lemme explained that even though grilling temperatures and techniques may vary, it’s important that the meat is at room temperature before placing it on the grill.

“This allows the meat to soften and cook more evenly,” he said.

Grilling steak doesn’t have to be difficult if you stick to the basics. “I like to season simply with some salt and pepper,” said Lou. “Then I heat the grill to 500° and cook the steak for three to four minutes on each side.” He explains that the high temperature sears the meat on the outside and leaves the inside tender and juicy.

The final step of allowing the steak to rest will elevate your Grillmeister status. “It’s tempting to cut right into your masterpiece,” said Lou, “but you must let your steak rest covered for 15 minutes so it can reabsorb the juices that were constricted during grilling.” Serve it with some grilled vegetables and your guests will likely invite themselves back for more!

But what if you’re looking for a lighter alternative? Grill some fish like tuna and salmon. For advice on serving up tender, flaky fish, we turned to Chris Posse, Head Chef over at Casey’s Public House. Chris said that July is the perfect time to grill tuna because market prices are typically down. “I like to marinate tuna filets in a little bit of olive oil and vinegar,” said Chris. “Then I’ll heat up the grill to 500° and cook them for three to four minutes on each side and serve them medium-rare.” In the summer, Chris likes to slice the filets and serve them on top of a healthy green salad.

“Salmon is a little tricky since it’s much more fragile than tuna,” Chris warned. “Make sure you oil up your grill first so your filets don’t stick.” He explained that he also cooks salmon on a 500° grill, but for one minute longer on each side. Chris said that he loves to serve salmon in the summer with seasonal fruit salsas such as watermelon salsa and pineapple salsa. Sounds delicious!

Here are a few more delicious options for your next barbecue: • Grilled chicken is fantastic after you’ve marinaded it for at least 30 minutes. While grilling, keep basting it with the marinade so it stays moist.

• Mushrooms are the new burger. A huge Portobello makes a delicious meat substitute, perfect for the vegetarians in the family. Sprinkle some shredded mozzarella cheese on top during the last few minutes of grilling and season well.

• Kabobs let you have a small amount of meat with extra vegetables. Cherry tomatoes, bell pepper chunks, button mushrooms and pearl onions are traditional, but consider adding fresh pineapple or mango, chunks of zucchini and even sweet potato cubes as a way to brighten the meal and add nutrients.

•Pizza night can be healthy and fun on the grill, too. Oil the grill so the dough doesn't stick. Prepare homemade pizza dough or thaw a premade ball or disc of pizza dough. Roll the dough into a circle as thick or thin as you’d like. Flour both sides lightly so they’re not too sticky. Place the circular dough on a 500° grill and close the lid. Grill for 3 – 4 mins. or until slightly brown on the bottom. Flip the dough onto a cookie sheet and add ingredients (sauce, cheese, toppings), then return it to the grill. Lower the temperature to 350°, close the lid and grill the pizza for another 2 – 3 mins. For a healthier twist, try a whole wheat crust brushed with olive oil.

Charles Clark knew from a fairly young age that he wanted to be a photographer. Born in 1880, by 1900 he was listing himself as a “photographer.” In 1907, Charles was employed as a staff photographer for the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, the largest circulating newspaper in the area. “In Philadelphia, nearly everyone reads the Bulletin.” Clark’s work was seen by a lot of local readers. By 1918, Clark and his wife and two daughters settled in at a house at Summit and Broomall Avenues.

Charles could walk two blocks, to take the trolley into town.

In September 1918 at age 38, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as a photographer. He never made it “over there,” as the war ended months later. He took a new job, as a newsreel cameraman for Fox Movietones, the company that provided silent video clips to be shown in movie theaters, between features.

Charles worked for them for the next 11 years. His work survives: The Fox Movietone archives are housed at the University

of South Carolina. You can search that collection by cameraman, “Clark”, to see all of the interesting events he saw in that job.

In 1930, Clark opened up his photography studio in Media, but also was a staff photographer for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The family still lived at the same home on Summit Avenue. He was employed during the Great Depression. Life was good – and then it was not. Charles was diagnosed with lung cancer, and was taken within weeks, two days before Christmas 1942.

His life’s work – photographs and negatives that chronicled what he saw in life – was filed away in what now fills five milk crates and three old suitcases. They sat in the basement of the Summit Road house for years, while outside a local boy, young Seth Pancoast, cut the Clark’s lawn in the 1950s. When Betty Clark died in 2001, Seth volunteered to take the old boxes of negatives. They went into his basement, awaiting the right moment to see the light of day. The right moment came last week, when Seth loaned them to me to figure out what is there. As I review them, I will be sure to post some of what I find on the Marple Historical Society’s website or Facebook page. It is a treasure trove of local history, just waiting for me to come along!

Drac’s son-in-law Johnny is frustrated and feeling like he doesn’t belong because he’s the only human in his monster family. He enlists the help of Van Helsing, whose Monsterfication Ray invention turns humans into monsters and monsters into humans. But when the ray misfires throughout the hotel, Drac and the rest of the pack become humans and Johnny becomes the only monster.

It’s a race against time to reverse the spell before their transformations become permanent. (not yet rated)

PAW Patrol: The Movie (in theaters August 20) Ryder and his team of heroic pups are back and on a mission to save Adventure City from destruction. Their evil nemesis Humdinger, who has been elected mayor, begins tearing down buildings and goes as far as banning dogs. The call for help comes from Liberty, a smart and clever dachshund who joins the team to save the citizens of Adventure City. (rated G) If you’re looking for fun, budget-friendly movies for the kids, head to Regal Edgmont Square on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for their $1 Summer Movie Express. Showtimes are at 12:30 pm both days. All the movies in this series are rated G and PG, and are just $1 per person. A portion of Regal’s proceeds from the Summer Movie Express benefit The Will Rogers Institute, which funds research toward understanding, treating and curing pulmonary diseases and disorders.

Marcella Marino: Young Entrepreneur and Founder of MarRosa’s Old World Cuisine

by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Marcella Marino Meet Marcella Rose Marino, a 21-year-old rising Senior at Penn State and founder of MarRosa’s Old World Cuisine, whose marinara sauce and vodka sauce can be found online and in 46 stores across the tri-state area.

While most 21-year-old college students are still trying to figure out what they want to do for a living, Marcella knew from a young age that she wanted to own her own business. She remembers watching her dad run his own company and she liked the freedom it afforded him. “My dad is an importer and distributor of specialty Italian foods,” she explained. “I always liked how he could make all of his own decisions, and I decided that I wanted to do the same.”

goal of becoming a business owner in mind, she was accepted to the Smeal College of Business at Penn State’s main campus, where she is pursuing a degree in Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship with a minor in International Business. Her decision to attend Penn State was deliberate. “I wanted to go to a big school where I could make connections and get involved,” Marcella said. “Penn State is known for their strong alumni network, and I want to be a part of that, too.”

Growing up in an Italian family, Marcella has always known what "good" Italian food tastes like, but she never found a marinara and vodka sauce that she enjoyed. “I always felt they were too acidic for me,” she said. After experimenting with imported tomatoes from Italy and various cooking times, she finally found the right blend for her marinara. Marcella then turned her attention to improving vodka sauce. While other store-bought brands used whey protein, she found that using heavy cream resulted in a creamier texture, less acidity and a natural orange hue.

With her products now in place, it was time to come up with a name and a logo design. The name, MarRosa’s was easy because Marcella was named after her great-grandmother, Marcella Rose, who had been born exactly 100 years earlier. Marcella was struggling with the logo design until one day, she noticed a framed picture of her own silhouette that was taken in Disney World when she was just five years old. Something clicked, and Marcella knew it was the perfect logo for her business.

So, what’s next? Marcella said that her tomato basil sauce is coming soon, and she’s working on adding a variety of pizza sauces as well. Sounds delicious!

Marcella admits that this business venture came a lot sooner than expected. “When the pandemic hit, all my classes went virtual,” she explained. “I found myself with a lot of extra time on my hands, so I decided to just get started with the business instead of waiting until after college.” She took full advantage of Penn State’s LaunchBox, a program that provides a wide array of free resources for entrepreneurs and innovators. Marcella said, “LaunchBox helped me through the process of forming my LLC and filing the government paperwork I needed to trademark my logo.”

When asked what advice would she give to other young entrepreneurs, Marcella said, “It’s all about forming relationships and asking for help.” She said she’s grateful for all the advice and guidance she’s received from her Penn State professors and from her father, who helped her start the process of contacting specialty food manufacturers and distributors.

Either way, summertime calls for fun and relaxation, so back away from the brownie batter because there’s no need to turn on your oven! Instead, let’s whip up some delicious and simple summer treats.

Let’s start with fruit pizza. Oh yes, this is the showstopper of desserts. It is super simple, perfect for a party and it’s so easy to make! Start with a soft sugar cookie base that you can buy at the store. Add a layer of cream cheese and create your own pattern of fruit using seasonal selections like blueberries, kiwi, raspberries and pineapple. Top it all off with a little whipped cream and your guests will surely be impressed.

Next up is a fun and fruity twist to your traditional s’mores. Try adding sliced strawberries and substitute gourmet chocolate chip cookies for the graham crackers. Or slice some bananas and add a dollop of peanut butter for extra gooey goodness.

One of the easiest-to-make, crowd-pleasing desserts out there is the icebox cake. While it doesn’t necessarily travel well, it is a huge hit when you’re the host! All you need is a box of ice cream sandwiches, sugar, vanilla extract, chocolate sauce and toppings of your choice.

The important thing to remember is that it needs to set in the freezer for three hours before serving.

Speaking of ice cream, if you’re in the mood for a good old-fashioned hand-dipped cone, a creamy milkshake or a big banana split, we know the place to go. Head over to The Sugaree in Newtown Square, where they want to make your day a little sweeter.

Finally, cool summer treats would not be complete without popsicles. It’s time to ditch the plastic wrapper pops from the grocery store and make your own gourmet frozen treats! All you need is to puree some fruit like papaya and raspberries, then add in some sugar, a pinch of salt and lime juice to your liking.

Have fun experimenting with combinations of seasonal fruits. Just be sure to taste the mixture before you freeze the batch.

Remember that many deserts can be modified to meet specific dietary needs. Whether you want dairy-free, sugar-free or gluten-free, many of our area stores carry pre-made options or have alternate ingredients so you, too, can enjoy a little treat!

Back on the Road Again!

Happy Summertime, Neighbors! With social distancing restrictions being lifted, we’re again able to be out and about, doing all our beloved summer activities. When life was on hold for a year, so was the operation of our recreational vehicles. Here are some tips for blowing the dust off and safely using those toys.

All vehicles that are permitted to be on public roads must have lights and reflectors. Make sure that the lighting systems work and that the reflectors are clean and intact. Always check the pressure and condition of the tires after any extended period of time in storage. Verify if your vehicle is required to have a state safety inspection. Most motor vehicles (depending on registration) and all trailers with a gross weight of over 3,000 pounds need to be inspected.

If you are driving your summertime toy, make sure that the battery has a proper state of charge and the engine oil level is checked and adjusted if needed. Before starting the engine, do a quick check under the hood. Our little rodent friends love to build warm nests in the tight spaces around the belts and hoses. Before moving the vehicle, perform a brake pedal check: Push hard as if you were stopping suddenly. This procedure is a quick way to check the integrity of the hydraulic brake system for leaks. If the pedal goes to the floor, repair will need to be performed before it’s safe to drive the vehicle.

Your summer recreational vehicle may be a trailer or require the use of one. Check the hitch point for proper operation, and clean and lube it if necessary. Check the safety chains and mounting points for rust or damage from ground rubbing.

Wheel bearings will need periodic maintenance. Water and road debris intrusion can damage wheel bearings and cause expensive repairs. Cleaning, inspecting and repacking wheel bearings should be performed in this case.

Trailers with brakes need to have the breakaway safety systems installed. There is always an auxiliary battery and a switch to operate this system in conjunction with the service brakes.

These items and the trailer’s lights should be checked before each use.

Physical activity and structured exercise are encourage for everyone because they’re wonderful ways to stay healthy. Many women, however, have some unique hurdles to overcome when they step into a gym to improve their physical health and appearance.

HESITANCY AND STIGMA Often, women set the goal to get “toned” without gaining too much muscle. To achieve those results, they tend to stick to doing only cardio exercises. Cardio-based exercises are definitely an excellent way to improve endurance and speed, but women frequently try to achieve results that only weightlifting gives. This is, in part, where the hesitation to engage in weightlifting is found. It is often thought that strength and

With discipline and time spent in the gym, you will see visible results and many other positive benefits including improved mood and better quality sleep. Although working out once or twice won’t yield instant results, keeping track of your progress over time is a surprising way to see how far you’ve come! Next time you’re at the gym, try the weight room out for a change and break the misconception that strength and femininity are opposed. Strength is beauty!
