Drinking at least eight, 8-ounce glasses of water per day will keep your lips supple and soft. • Lip Moisturizer with an SPF – “Because we can’t avoid sun all the time, it helps to use a lip moisturizer with an SPF of 15, and then put on your lipstick or lip gloss over it. I recommend Burt’s Bees Res-Q Lip Balm SPF 15, which protects your lips from sun, wind and snow,” says Elizabeth Morgan, MD.
Advanced Lip Care • Lip Plumpers – Lip plumpers cause the lips to swell temporarily by irritating them and thus, increasing the blood flow. Many also contain collagen and hyaluronic acid (found in injectable fillers), but there is no evidence these have any effect in this form. “A lip plumper is applied like a lipstick, smoothing it onto your lips. However, some people are allergic to these products, so test it out on your hand before you buy,” Morgan says. • Dermal Fillers – If you’re looking for a subtle lip enhancement, dermal fillers help plump the lip tissue and provide the desired aesthetic. According to David M. Whiteman, MD, of Southern Plastic Surgery, “The most common dermal injectables used for lip enhancement include hyaluronic acid-based products like Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane. These treatments involve simple, 15-minute symmetrical injections into the lips after preparation with a local anesthetic, if needed. Most lip rejuvenation patients notice positive lip enhancement for up to a year following their initial treatment.” Adds Morgan, “Dermal fillers should look completely natural—the ‘overdone’ look is the result of having too much filler injected. In the lips, a little goes a long way.”

In-Depth Lip Care • Lip Implants – “Lip implant surgery is appropriate for lip enhancement patients who desire a permanent change to their lips instead of the temporary change injectables produce.
