Summer Fun Faves I love summer. I love the sun, the outdoors, the smells, the music... pretty much everything about it. My #1 summer fun fave is going to concerts at Chastain Park Amphitheatre. The fact that I can walk to the concerts and hear them from my house is a bonus, but despite that, there is something truly special about a summer night at Chastain Park...the music, candles and wine combined with favorite oldies such as Sting, Steve Winwood, Al Green, Earth, Wind & Fire and on and on.There is no venue like it, even though several have tried to duplicate the magic that is purely Chastain. For more ways to enjoy some old and new summer fun, check out My Best List.

My Best List Dancing Stars of Atlanta - Kick off the summer season on June 3 with Dancing Stars of Atlanta. This event is spectacular in pretty much every way. It celebrates the nostalgic dance styles of yesteryear in a killer venue with great peoplewatching, entertainment, food and drink, and it’s all for a great cause. My partner, Christjohn Batters and I were privileged to participate as “dancing stars” last year. This year, Best Self Atlanta is helping to promote this unique (not boring) fundraiser and I encourage you to buy tickets and go, or follow your favorite local celebrities online and give what you can to support the fight against the debilitating disease of Alzheimer’s. www.dancingstarsofatlanta2012.kintera.org Photo by Stephen Marino Photography

STAND UP FOR THE HOOCH/SUP - I can always count on my good friends at High Country Outfitters to dial me in to what’s cool when it comes to outdoor sports in Atlanta. Our staff was invited to a SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) clinic to learn about this fairly new outdoor sport and I was not disappointed. SUP is one of those things you need to try to really understand why it is so great. You are on a wide surfboard with a paddle and it’s all about balance, core, upper body movement and coordination. All in all it is quite a workout (gentle yet intense), combined with the tranquility and peace of just being in nature. I loved it and plan to be at Atlanta’s first Stand Up Paddleboarding Race at Morgan Falls Overlook on May 5. If you want to attend, head over to our website (www.bestselfconnect.com) for all the details. Stay tuned for SUP yoga! www.highcountryoutfitters.com Swan Drive-In - When you are ready to take a break from all the fun events, head north on 575 to the Swan Drive-In for some good old fashioned throw-back fun. Nestled in downtown Blue Ridge, this is the “reel” deal. You can take lawn chairs or stay in the car, enjoy the snack bar cuisine or pack your own favorite movie food. It’s great for family fun or a date night, and the travel time is just a little over an hour. www.swan-drive-in.com All the best Sherri Adair, Publisher, sadair@bestselfatlanta.com

from the editor Enjoying the Journey

The beginning of summer always makes me feel both nostalgic for fun times past and excited about the new adventures to come. I imagine Monica Pearson (p. 41) must be feeling the same way as she embarks upon a new chapter of her life. July 25 will mark her last day on the air after an amazing 37-year career. We are so excited to see what the future will hold for her, and have no doubt she will continue to inspire us to be our best selves. Another woman who can inspire is Mom, and we are amazed by what local mothers are cooking up to make the future brighter and healthier for kids (p. 49). If you are looking for unique ways to spend the warm weather months, make sure to check out our Summer Fun Guide (p. 31) for some ideas on how to enjoy yourself both in and around the city. Bring Mom (and some friends) with you to try the latest libations at Cocktails in the Garden at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. And if you are looking for an adrenaline rush, try your hand at the world’s largest climbing wall at Historic Banning Mills. Wherever you find yourself this summer, make time for some good, healthy fun and be sure to share your adventures on Best Self’s Facebook page.

Chicken Breasts with Grilled Pineapple and Tomatillo Salsa Although pineapple may be available year-round, its peak season runs from March to July. So take advantage of this sweet treat and use it in different dishes like this chicken breast with grilled pineapple and tomatillo salsa. In addition to its delicious taste, this fruit is a great source of vitamin C and an enzyme (proteolytic enzyme bromelain) that can help relieve indigestion. You can also try this recipe over steamed rice for a complete meal, perfect for lunch or dinner. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons canola oil, plus more for oiling the grill ½ large sweet white onion (such as Vidalia), cut into thick rings 6 pineapple spears Salt and pepper to taste 1 ½ cups tomatillo salsa 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro 1 tablespoon lime juice

Nutrition Per serving: 300 calories (90 from fat), 10g total fat, 1.5g saturated fat, 75mg cholesterol, 930mg sodium, 20g total carbohydrate (1g dietary fiber, 18g sugar), 30g protein. Serves: 4

Method: Brush onions and pineapple with one tablespoon of the oil then season with salt and pepper. Grill, flipping once, until just charred in spots and softened, six to eight minutes total; transfer to a plate. When cool enough to handle, roughly chop onions and pineapple and transfer to a bowl. Add tomatillo salsa, cilantro, lime juice, salt and pepper and toss gently to combine. Brush chicken all over with remaining tablespoon of oil and season with salt and pepper. Atlanta doctors provide answers to your questions

a

Q

What is Sublative RF? Am I a candidate and if so, what kind of results can I expect? Sublative Rejuvenation (RF) is a technology to treat mild to moderate wrinkles, red and brown spots and textural irregularities of the skin. This new treatment supplies energy to the skin in a matrix. The healthy skin around the treated spots accelerates the healing process and produces new collagen and healthy skin cells. The treatment is a safe and effective solution for most skin types. Since results vary depending on the individual, I recommend you visit a professional for a consultation.

When I wake up in the mornings, my jaw muscles are very sore. Is this normal and what can I do to stop the discomfort?

More than likely you are grinding or clenching your teeth while you are sleeping, which tends to be painful in the mornings. Grinding and clenching may result in one or more of the following: headaches in the morning, wearing down the enamel of your teeth, fractured teeth and pain in the supporting muscles. I recommend a night guard which is worn throughout your sleep. It protects your teeth and keeps the muscles of the jaw in a resting position so they are not activated throughout the night, causing pain the next day. Occlusal guards work best when they are custom ďŹ tted for your teeth and mouth. Ask your dentist to see if you may need a night guard during your next exam.

I have heard about monovision in contact lenses. How does it work? At age 40, we begin to focus things at near vision a little differently from how we focus things at distance vision. The patient wearing eyeglasses will compensate for this process by wearing reading glasses, bifocals or multi-focal lenses. However, most contact lens patients at this age do not want to wear reading glasses over their contact lenses. After careful evaluation by an eye care provider, some contact lens patients are candidates for monovision, where one eye compensates for distance vision and the other eye is adjusted for near vision.

Julius N. Skeete, OD Dr. Skeete & Associates, PC

Can wearing high heels be harmful to my feet?

Studies show that shoe heel height matters in causing foot pain. High heeled shoes overload the forefoot and lead to bunions, hammertoes, corns, neuromas and ingrown toenails. If you must wear high heeled shoes, pick a slightly larger shoe size than usual, try open toed styles, look for shoes with some cushion under the ball of the foot and swap into atter comfort shoes as soon as your situation allows.

Can exercise increase my chances of conceiving? For overweight women with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and irregular menstrual cycles, exercise when combined with diet and medication can result in weight loss and resumption of normal periods and fertility. However, too much exercise, or more than three hours per week of aerobics, has been shown to delay pregnancy. Fifteen to 20 minutes three times per week at 70-80 percent of maximum heart rate (220 minus your age) along with resistance training (free weights or machines) can help restore fertility.

To Tan or not to Tan? According to a study published in the April issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, young women are more likely to develop skin cancer. “A recent study reported that people who use indoor tanning beds frequently are 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma, and we know young women are more likely to use them than young men,” says Dr. Jerry Brewer, a dermatologist at The Mayo Clinic.

No, as long as you follow the instructions given to you by your hair extension professional. Also, do not leave extensions in longer than recommended.

What type of maintenance is required and how long can they last?

AFTER

Depending on the strength and health of your hair, extensions can last three to four months, maybe five. If you treat your hair extensions well, they should last awhile.

What is the typical cost of hair extensions? That depends on the amount of hair and length the client desires. It ranges from a couple hundred dollars to over one thousand.

BEFORE

What is a common question you get? People always ask, “Can I go swimming?” I recommend avoiding the ocean or pool. If you must get in, put conditioner into your hair and a cap over your head, and when you get out immediately rinse it. -Answers provided by Carter Barnes hairstylist Jutta Blase who has over 10 years experience as a hair extension specialist.

On the air, co-anchors Jovita Moore and Justin Farmer also voiced their admiration. “It’s hard to imagine Atlanta and WSB without seeing you every single day,” Farmer said. “We’re going to miss you a lot.” This sentiment was echoed not only by viewers, but also by her co-workers, peers and managers as they all gathered in the newsroom to help her make the official statement. Ever humble, Pearson accepted their words of praise and congratulations but reassured her co-anchors by saying, “You two will do fine without me!” As for her audience, many Atlanta natives grew up watching Pearson on TV with their parents and have continued the tradition with their own children. She has spanned generations and for many, watching the news without her will certainly be a different experience. WSB-TV altered Atlanta television forever in 1975 by making Pearson (then known as Monica Kaufman) the first woman and the first minority to anchor the evening news in our city. While there is no doubt she excelled in her position, Pearson admits that a career in journalism was not her first choice. “My degree is in English and Philosophy,” she explains. “I planned to teach, and chance encounters got me to where I am.” After two years of college, she got married and went to work at a bank across the street from The Courier Journal and The Louisville Times, where she was eventually hired to be a newsroom clerk. Following the riots after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination in 1968, she was accepted to a summer program developed by Columbia University and the Ford Foundation to get more minorities into a predominantly white newsroom. “I was accepted for the program and came back to The Louisville Times as a reporter. I tried for a job at WAVE-TV and was turned down, so I went to work for Brown Forman Distillers in public relations, but knew it wasn’t for me,” she recalls. Next she took a modeling and charm course to learn how to do hair and makeup and dress for the job she wanted. “I got the job at WHAS after informally modeling at Hurstbourne Shopping center for Bycks department store,” she says. “I met June Dorsey whose husband was the news director at WHAS and I interviewed and got the job.” WAVE-TV then sent a tape of Pearson to Dick Mallary, a consultant for WSB. When WSB called, Pearson remembers being hesitant to go to the interview because another station, (WAGA) had shown interest in her talent as well. “WSB called me to literally change the face of Atlanta television at 6 p.m. because, until I came along, only white men did the evening news,” she says. “I think God wanted to see in both instances how I would handle disappointment. I learned where I needed to change to fit what news directors wanted, and I had faith that if it was meant for me, it would come. And it did.” From there, Pearson left the Bingham family, then owners of The Courier Journal, The Louisville

Times and WHAS radio and TV, to join the Cox family in Atlanta. “It is important to give praise to Don Elliott Heald and the Cox family,” she says. “They decided it was time for the anchor desk to mirror their audience, even though it could have lost them viewers, big time.” But instead, viewership only grew. Pearson not only reported groundbreaking news, but was also witness to many changes within the broadcasting field. She says the biggest change she’s seen in the news industry is going live. “We now have the ability to go live from anywhere in the world, and not always using a satellite, but using something as small as a computer,” she explains. “Instant news, instant everything means the reporter truly has to be observant and in tune.” Over the next 36 years, Pearson interviewed everyone from Oprah Winfrey to former president Jimmy Carter, and she did it with the same sense of honesty and professionalism, drawing out their stories and presenting the unbiased facts to her audience. As a result, she has been consistently recognized for her efforts and has garnered numerous awards, and this year is no exception. On June 23, The National Association of Black Journalists will honor her at their annual NABJ Convention and Career Fair in New Orleans with their 2012 Legacy Award. “To say I am honored to receive this award, sounds like a cliché, but I truly am honored humbled and grateful to NABJ,” Pearson says. Honored and grateful are also words her fans and co-workers have used to describe how they feel about Pearson. “She is an icon, not just here in Atlanta, but across the country,” Jovita Moore says. “Few have impacted local news the way Monica has.” As for Pearson, she wants her fans to know how much respect she holds for her colleagues at WSB-TV. “Jovita, Justin, Linda, John, Erin, Carol, Fred and Craig and all the other anchors will continue in the tradition of quality news reporting and anchoring and community involvement that defines WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News. John Pruitt and I have long been the faces of action news, and we have a place in WSB history, but now it is time for the next generation to add to that history.” While much has been said about her departure, Pearson shows no signs of slowing down. During that February 6 broadcast where she made her official statement about her upcoming retirement, she also talked about going back to school and starting her own travel blog. Pearson has represented so many different things to people over the years – trusted news broadcaster, trailblazer, community advocate – however there is one thing she hopes her audience will remember above all else. “I hope they remember my smile and my attempt to talk to them and not read to them. I hope they know I cared about what we covered and how what we covered affected them,” she says. “I hope they will remember my close-up interviews because that nosey person truly is me. But if I have to say just one thing, it is that I hope they remember me as their friend.” www.bestselfconnect.com

More from Monica: What do you remember most about the day you announced your retirement? Being shocked at how many important people came from corporate, such as Doug Franklin and Bill Hoffman, just to name a few, and then all of the staff from all over the building. I was touched by what everyone said about me. It was surreal, like being at your own funeral. And then the viewers started calling and emailing, and I thought how blessed I am to have people care about me, in ways I did not know.

Describe how you felt the first time you were on camera. The first time I was on camera was on a children’s show in Louisville, Kentucky, and I loved it. My mother had me in dancing school, Jewell McNair’s Dancing Dolls, so I loved to entertain and be on stage. I look back at those pictures and scream with laughter because the smile was there but the sassy stuff was there too. I also sang on Hayloft Hoedown in Louisville, a country music show, and was bitten by the singing bug. But the first time I saw myself as a reporter and then an anchor, I cringed. I still do cringe when I look at my old stuff - that tinny voice and very contained, trying to be someone other than me. Of late, I’ve been in shock over how skinny I used to be. Right now, I’m seeing a nutritionist to get my eating right and take off some pounds before I leave, so I will at least look a little more like I did back then.

How did you arrive at your decision to retire? My daughter is 31 and my 89-year-old mother is happy at Sunrise, so I knew now it was time for me to do what I want to do versus what I have to do. And, I’ll admit, over the last two years with Chuck leaving, John leaving, it felt right to go. Plus, Jovita was in place and ready and we have a group of

monicapearson_profile.indd 38197.12.5.indd 44

Can you share with us any of your plans for after you retire? I am retiring but I’m not tired. In September, I will begin working on my Masters in Telecommunications at the University of Georgia. It will take two years to complete. Then, I hope to teach on the college and university level. I’ll see how the Masters goes before I think about trying for a Ph.D. I am also launching a website, www. atoeinthewater.com. People choose their vacation sites based on where they have been, their friends and family have been and seldom jump out on faith to a new location. I will visit places in the north that southerners haven’t tried, such as Maine and the Poconos and for northerners, places like Barnsley Gardens down here. The point is I’m trying places all over the country, sticking a toe in the water to see if it is just right for vacation. I’ll shoot still pictures and video and write a short narrative about the pros and cons. And last but not least, I want to write a book, using my mother’s favorite statements, aimed at teens and their parents. My mother’s mantra to me is: “It’s what you do with what you have that makes you what you are.” On a side note, the line is used in a cartoon (Kasha & the Zulu King) that will premiere on BET on July 28 where I’ll voice the main female character. I took a course last year to learn how to stretch my voice and do other voices, so I plan to do some voiceover work as well.

What advice would you give people who are just beginning their broadcasting career? Remember it is not about you. It is always about your true bosses, the viewers. Be a great www.bestselfconnect.com

storyteller, providing good content and context and memorable moments that make people care. Tell the story through the people who will be affected most.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve had to face during your career? Trying to be all things to all people. I had to learn to accept who I am and distinguish between constructive and destructive criticism. I learned I needed a life that defined me away from TV, a community, a family. I also had to learn to say “no” and not try to stretch myself to get to every speech or appearance because someone would say; you owe it to the community.

Who gave the most memorable interview? That is a tough question because I loved Dolly Parton, Paul Newman and early Oprah Winfrey, (because I had more time with her), James Earl Jones, Sean Connery…each one had something special that made the interview stand out in my mind.

Who are the people, both personally and professionally, that help you be your best self? My mom, because she keeps me centered. My daughter Claire, because she isn’t impressed with what I do, but is impressed that when she was growing up, I made her games, went on field trips and supported her. My dear John, a man in his own right and icing on the cake. He is a good hearted family man who is very protective of me, in many ways. He spoils me rotten from jewelry to dresses to cooking. He is a take-charge kind of guy and is so good to my mother, who adores him. And his family has embraced me too. His mom, Mama Jo, (that’s what I call her), Josephine Pearson, treats me like her daughter.

Do you want to improve the quality of your life?

Professionally, so many people have influenced me, but the person who changed me greatly was Dick Mallary, the Magid & Associates consultant who eventually became a news director at WSB. When Pruitt left, I thought it was the end of the world. I had tried to anchor like him, be like him. I remember Dick talking to me at a coaching session and he made me tell a story, not read it. He taped it and showed it to me. The difference was amazing. When I let myself show through, the story was better. When I wrote the way I spoke, it became communication. He let me see it was all right to be me and to trust myself.

• Lose Weight and Keep it Off

What will you miss most about your job? The people I work with, and not just those on the air. And I’ll miss viewers. Of course, Twitter and Facebook will allow me to stay in touch, but I will miss the appearances, the tree lighting, the fireworks show, and the specials. I’ll do something for the station, like John. I will miss not being here every day, where I have been for 37 years. But I won’t miss the “uniforms” – my St. John suits – those will be for special occasions, nor the makeup every day, and as for my hair, I can change it daily to match my moods and attire, because hair to me is just an accessory.

Use the power of your mind to get what you want today!

What inspires you every day?

!

Over the past 37 years, you’ve been on the go, involved with so many different charities and breaking news stories. What do you do to maintain that pace and stay healthy? Right now I am overweight but working on it. I used to play a lot of tennis to keep my stress and weight down. I would name the balls. Now I am happy on the elliptical, the treadmill and the stationary bike. I love to read and now make time for books and I meditate on the Gospel to keep myself humble and to remind myself that I’ve been blessed to be a blessing to others. I do pace myself better now. There was a time when I was speaking at least four days a week. Now I do 52 events a year. I never get enough sleep, except on vacation, and now every day, looking out my windows, the water makes me feel like I’m on vacation. And John and I love movies and travel, so the anticipation of that next trip keeps me on point.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? From my mama, and the grammar isn’t great, but it makes a great point. “If you is who you ain’t, then you ain’t who you is.” In other words, “to thine own self be true.”

We would be remiss if we didn’t ask about your everchanging hairstyles throughout the years! What inspires you to change your hair? Valerie Odom Cobbin Certified Master Hypnotherapist

I change my hair because I am a Southern girl and I like to match my hair and clothes and purses and shoes and makeup and jewelry. Plus, I am a frustrated beautician. I always wanted to be a stylist.

What have been your favorite and least favorite ‘dos? My favorite is when it is very, very short and platinum. That’s me! My least favorite was that mushroom hairdo from years ago.

That will be the toughest day of my life. I must maintain my composure as I say goodbye on the air, knowing it is my last complete newscast. But one thing that excites me about that day is that we are having an alumni cocktail party. People I worked with years ago are coming back that night to celebrate. And it is not just reporters and anchors, but also directors, photographers, behind the scenes people who always made me look good on the air. It will be so much fun to reminisce and also introduce our current reporters and anchors to people who built this station over the years. www.bestselfconnect.com

Colleagues recall their favorite memories of career days with Monica My favorite memory will be her laugh and sense of humor. She lights up a room with both of those. I remember emceeing an event with Monica and the audience was having a good time and talking and not paying a lot of attention to what we were saying. Now, that wasn’t what bothered Monica, but we were talking about some special kids and she wanted everyone to hear so she firmly told everyone to listen up! The place went quiet. You could hear a pin drop. It was incredible. Only Monica can pull that off. And once she had them, she smiled and any hard feelings disappeared and we were back on track. That is Monica. —John Bachman, WSB-TV

When the bomb went off during the Atlanta Olympics, Monica and I co-anchored our coverage for five hours from midnight until dawn. We were both exhausted and running on adrenaline, and I’ll never forget the poise and focus Monica brought to this story of worldwide significance. Monica was the ultimate teammate on that sad night as we tried to help our viewers cope with the disaster that impacted us all.” —John Pruitt, WSB-TV No one will soon forget Monica in this newsroom. She greeted everyone with a warm smile and friendly words everyday. We often knew Monica was here—even if we didn’t see her—because we could hear her infectious laugh across the newsroom or down the hallway. —Jovita Moore, WSB-TV I have so many precious memories of working with Monica. Picking just one is hard, but I’d have to say our trip to Oslo, Norway to cover President Carter’s Nobel Peace Prize. We were working crazy hours covering the Carter family during the day and doing live newscasts at night from a rooftop in Oslo. We had a great team there including John Pruitt. One night we needed Monica to voice a story so our editor could edit and send the story back to Atlanta for the next day. I had to wake Monica long after bedtime and as a young producer I was nervous but she had no problem walking down the hotel hallway in her PJs and big slippers to get to our production room (a small hotel room turned TV production house). She was cheerful and thankful for her hardworking team. In the years we have worked together she has never shied away from hard work or long hours. I’ll really miss her in the newsroom every day. —Marian Pittman, WSB-TV - Station Manager

“My favorite memory of working with Monica is just seeing her walk into the newsroom. She immediately lights up the room. Her smile and energy are infectious and her special talent as an anchor inspires everyone to be at their very best. Monica knows everyone’s name, regardless of their position or tenure, and she takes the time to interact with people personally. She sets the tone and creates an environment for success. It goes without saying we will really miss her.”

Like most working mothers today, juggling career and family is nothing new to these hardworking ladies. But the moms you’re about to meet have discovered the best of both worlds. They’ve taken their passions and turned them into successful business ventures, and they’ve done it without compromising what’s most important to them – their families. Stephanie Green-Bass As founder of (Plā) Beauty, Stephanie Green-Bass is making a lasting impression, not just on women’s faces, but in the lives of many deserving children. Her environmentally-friendly cosmetic line allows women to customize their own makeup, while a portion of its proceeds goes to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

What was the inspiration behind your business? After losing our first daughter, Bella, to an intestinal infection at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in June of 2004. Children’s helped me and my family through a very difficult time. With this life-changing experience, I wanted to honor Bella and show my second daughter, Ava, that a woman can do anything she puts her mind to.

What is your ultimate goal for your business? To create a brand that is known as a respectable makeup line that makes a difference. (Plā) Beauty makes a difference not only on your face by offering paraben-free products, but also in the life of a child by donating a portion of all proceeds to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and other local children’s hospitals in areas where (Plā) Beauty is sold.

How has this endeavor impacted your family? My family has jumped in with both feet to help me build my dream. Mark, whom I have been married to for nine years, is learning to live with a wife that wakes up at the break of dawn so that I can get my Facebook posts or tweets done before Ava, our 6-year-old, wakes up for school. From 7:20 a.m. on, I am in mommy mode until after carpool when I can put my game face on. Then at 3 or 4 p.m., I flip the switch back to mommy mode until she’s fast asleep and I finish the day and plan out the next one. Although Ava is young, I am proud she is learning to be part of a family business because it’s showing her that hard work and determination always pay off.

What personal and professional support have you received to help you be your best self? My best self has taken a lifetime to build. All of my life experiences and the people that have crossed my path have made me the woman I am today. Being raised in Atlanta has given me a great sense of self. My mom and stepfather have been my biggest cheerleaders, allowing me to spread my wings and fly. It has also been amazing to have my line launched exclusively at Woo Skincare and Cosmetics. I have found a new home as well as a mentor in Linda Silber, co-owner of Woo Skincare and Cosmetics. She has given me direction when fear was my biggest enemy. Having a female entrepreneur in my life inspires me to keep moving forward and overcome the obstacles we encounter every day. BEST SELF ATLANTA

How do you balance your passion and your family life?

What is your favorite “me” time activity?

Since my passion involves my family, there is a fine line. I often have to check myself to make sure that I am creating the balance I originally intended. To be in the moment is the most precious gift I learned from losing Bella. And although it is not realistic to be present every second, it never hurts to have a goal and check yourself.

My favorite “me” time activity is when I get up early in the morning before getting Ava ready for school and put a little makeup on my face. The power of makeup is pretty amazing.

What famous mom do you relate to and why?

Chinese Southern Belle is the venture of mother-daughter team Margaret and Natalie Keng which they launched in 2009. Through cooking classes, cultural workshops and Asian market tours, they use food to connect people and culture. www.chinesesouthernbelle.com

Donna Hyland, the CEO and President of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Years ago when I was volunteering at Children’s, before creating (Plā) Beauty, I was mesmerized by Donna’s success as a businesswoman and always curious about she did it. I would read articles and see magazine covers with her on it but never realized she was just like every other woman. She carried the weight of the world on her shoulders and was just trying to do her best to make a difference. One day out of the blue, I received an email from her, thanking me for lip gloss I had sent her. I took the opportunity to ask her to be my model for CBS 46 Better Mornings Atlanta with Tracye Hutchins for a “Positively Georgia” segment. She immediately said yes, and a week later, a woman I had once been too nervous to speak to was wearing my makeup and bringing her daughter to meet me. She is a woman who has faced adversity and come out stronger from it, which inspired my newest campaign, Pla2GiveBack.

Margaret and Natalie Keng

What was the inspiration behind your business? Natalie: I knew I wanted to start capturing my family’s history and live closer to my parents. Even though I had experience in multiple sectors including non-profit, government and corporate, everything seemed disconnected or disjointed. I’m a natural connector and envisioned creating an entity that would pull all of my interests - food, family, culture, travel, social awareness, health and sustainability - together. Margaret: I didn’t get the idea at first, but then Natalie explained that food was a gateway, not the end goal. I thought it would be fun and different. After all, I loved teaching and had taught the area’s first Chinese cooking class back in the 80s.

What is your ultimate goal for your business? Natalie and Margaret: To be ambassadors connecting two culturally rich traditions—the East and West - and find balance in between. To build a multicultural, multimedia enterprise that features a TV program (Rachael Ray meets Oprah meets This American Life), a website or blog, how-to videos, specialty food products and kitchenware, books and more.

How has this endeavor impacted your family? Margaret: When Natalie told me she was leaving her corporate job and coming back to Atlanta to live closer to me, I wasn’t sure whether to be elated or worried! Her dad joked that the business sounded like a non-profit. So far, it’s been fun and adventurous, but Natalie’s doing the start-up, day-to-day work. I’m just her sidekick!

What personal and professional support have you received to help you be your best self? Natalie: My family has played a huge role in supporting and encouraging me to live out this dream. They are my business advisors, investors, sounding boards and cheerleaders. A few close friends are also there with moral support and professional advice.

What is your ultimate goal for your business?

Margaret: Natalie and I complement each other well. I teach the meat dishes and she does the “greenhead” veggie dishes. My daughters and I are very close. Even though we’re not all in one place, we stay in touch.

I want to see Little Me Tea in the hands of every single child in America! This isn’t just about making money. It’s my passion. As parents, we need to be vigilant about what we feed our children, and we need to seek out products that are organic, offer real nourishment and are free of harmful ingredients.

How do you balance your passion and your family life?

How has this endeavor impacted your family?

Margaret: I am positive and self-entertaining on the personal front, try not to be a burden to my children, stay efficient on business tasks and set clear priorities around quality time with family. Natalie: I spread myself thin, so maintaining balance is hard. I eat well, exercise and include “unplugged” social activities like potlucks and outings.

What famous mom do you relate to and why? Margaret: They weren’t famous, but they are stars in my eyes - my own mother and my host family when I first came to the United States.

What is your favorite “me” time activity? Natalie: Playing sports and amusement park games with snack breaks. Margaret: Going fishing and writing poetry.

sugar or lacked taste and real nourishment. So I turned to something that I drink every day - tea. I realized there weren’t many caffeine-free teas with health benefits, so I created a tea that is perfect for keeping kids hydrated and healthy.

It’s been life-changing, to say the least. I was a stay-at-home mom when I came up with the idea of Little Me Tea. Now I work day and night, and always struggle to balance the needs of my business with the needs of my family. But this is a family business, so we all pull together. We have even had Julia sign cartons of Little Me Tea at Whole Foods Markets during demonstrations.

What personal and professional support have you received to help you be your best self? I have the best support person in the world: my husband. Beyond what he does to pitch in with raising our daughter and running our crazy household, he believes in what I’m doing and supports me 1000 percent. He is also the person I turn to most for professional support. His business experience has been invaluable in running our company. But I also have a strong support network of businesswomen who inspire and support me, and I could not have gotten this far without them.

How do you balance your passion and your family life?

When Georgia mom Melinda Hicks couldn’t find a healthy kids’ drink for her daughter, Julia, she created Little Me Tea, (found in your local Whole Foods Market), a delicious caffeine-free tea flavored with fruit and vegetable juices. Today this nutrient-rich beverage has been coined “the healthiest kids’ drink on the planet.” www.littlemetea.com

I don’t see the two as separate entities. My passion for organics and good health has been an integral part of our family life and the raising of our daughter. Little Me Tea is simply an extension of that passion. I’m so pleased to see my own daughter drinking our product every day, and I know it is being shared with many children who enjoy the benefits as well.

What famous mom do you relate to and why? What was the inspiration behind Little Me Tea? My daughter Julia was the inspiration behind Little Me Tea. As she grew, I began looking for healthy beverages to give her, but everything was either loaded with

There are many famous women who inspire me. Robyn O’Brien, founder of Allergy Kids Foundation and author of the book, “The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About It,” opened parents’ eyes to what is going on with our food supply. Nancy Massoto of Holistic Moms Network is a passionate mom who has created a national support network for many other mothers like myself.

What is your favorite “me” time activity? A good book and a good hike. Anytime I can get lost in an activity, put all the daily tasks and demands of this business aside and just be in the moment, whether it’s lost in a fictional world or the beauty of the natural world, I’m happy.

What was the inspiration behind your business? My late grandmother, Sibyl Brewer, is the heart and soul of Bellanonna Boutique. The word “bellanonna” means “beautiful grandmother” in Italian. My grandmother was always coming up with her own skincare concoctions and had the most radiant, glowing skin. www.bestselfconnect.com

Breathing Life Into An Old Knee? It is amazing how many doctors are not aware or do not discuss the many available treatments for degenerated or arthritic joints. Simply put, the patient receives a prescription from one of many pain medications, then a corticosteroid injection and finally surgery. Next to Cardiovascular disease, Osteoarthritis is increasingly one of the most debilitating diseases out there today due to longer life expectancy, poor health habits, overweight, imbalance of joint function and overstrain. Osteoarthritis of the knee is the degeneration of the joint cartilage and bone which causes pain, swelling and limited mobility. This, in turn, negatively affects almost every aspect of life for a person suffering from this type of disease. When you think about it, we rely on our knees for just about everything, from climbing stairs and hopping into the bath tub to dancing the night away and chasing our kids around. Supartz treatment, commonly referred to as joint fluid therapy, employs a highly purified sodium hyaluronate which is very similar to synovial fluid. Synovial fluid surrounds your joints and acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. Research has shown that in some instances, increased synovial fluid in the joint may actually trigger healing by increasing the production of Chondrocytes, which are responsible for the production of cartilage!

I fell 10 years ago and hurt my low back, my hip and my pelvis...I could not walk, drive, weight bare, sit, or barely stand. After just a few treatments, I noticed my body stabilizing... I could sleep better, walk better and continue to work...Total Health Care is the only place I will go ever again.” —Julie W.

What We Offer: • Regenerative & Integrated Medicine for Chronic Pain • Medical Doctors, Physiotherapists & Chiropractic Physicians On Staff • Regenerative Non-Steroidal Bio-Medicines (injections) • Anti-Arthritic Joint Injections Supartz® (for knees) www.supartz.com • Advanced Joint Fluid Replacement • Advanced Nerve Testing (Numbness & Tingling) • Lower Back & Neck Regenerative Disc Therapy • Non-Toxic Non-Surgical Pain Solutions That Work

Although several joint fluid therapies are available today, Supartz has a couple of things going for it that separate it from the pack: First, because Supartz has no synthetic component, the likelihood of an allergic reaction is extremely low. Further, Supartz has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid, the active ingredient that makes these types of treatments so effective. So, why have you not been told about this potentially wonderful treatment? This question is often posed and the answer is this: An orthopedic surgeon goes to school to learn surgery. Also in most cases, because of Insurance & Medicare requirements, that surgeon may not operate on a knee until he/she has attempted several non-invasive alternatives such as steroidal medications, corticosteroid injections and physical therapy. It is possible that the reason so many surgeons go through the basic steps outlined above and skip even attempting Supartz; is to qualify the patient for surgery. Keep in mind that in the United States, we do 11 times more knee surgeries than in Europe. Why? Because as one non-surgical European orthopedist said, “We in Europe focus on regeneration of the joint vs surgery.” Most health insurance plans and Medicare cover joint fluid therapy treatment. What is your ultimate goal for your business?

What famous mom do you relate to and why?

My ultimate goal is to continue to grow and provide affordable, all natural products to consumers. Eventually I would love to have a small boutique storefront.

Tori Spelling! She never ceases to amaze me! She reminds me so much of myself. When I come up with an idea or dream, I make it my full time job to make it a reality. Aside from being a Hollywood celebrity, Tori is an amazing mother, wife and entrepreneur. Her love for animals is also one I can relate to. If we lived in an area where we could raise our own chickens, have a goat for milk and a piglet that stays inside, I would be in heaven. But for now we stay busy with two cats, a one-yearold bull terrier, a two-year-old Great Dane and a lion head bunny.

How has this endeavor impacted your family? When I am making products, my kids love to watch and ask questions about the exotic fruits and materials that I use. It is always a learning experience for them. We talk about what country the fruits, oils and butters come from, as well as how many centuries each one has existed. I am so blessed to have the opportunity to stay at home with my children and continue to grow Bellanonna.

What personal and professional support have you received to help you be your best self? I have an amazing family, a supportive husband, friends, clients, a network of local business owners and a few celebrity contacts as well. I have also met so many other WAHMs (work at home moms) through networking. All of my supporters make Bellanonna stronger. I take all criticism, whether it is negative or positive, and use it to let my business thrive to its fullest!

What is your favorite “me” time activity? My favorite “me” time is anything outside! I love hiking and taking our two dogs to the river to play.

How do you balance your passion and your family life? I always involve my family, whether it is teaching our children how important it is to use all natural products that are never tested on animals, or having my husband put labels on my jars. Every night we make sure to spend quality time as a family. I think the key to having a good balance is making not only your business your passion, but your family as well!

Melanoma at a Glance

What causes melanoma? There is definitely an increased risk with sun exposure, but some people get melanoma in places that have never seen the sun. The thing most closely related to melanoma is a bad sunburn early in life. Otherwise there are many genetic factors. If there is a family history of melanoma, you are at a 50 percent higher risk of getting melanoma yourself.

Who is at the highest risk for developing melanoma? Redheads and blondes have a high risk because their skin typically burns, freckles, and reddens easily. If you tan frequently or you have over 100 moles, you have a very high risk as well. Each year, the risk of getting melanoma goes up drastically. One out of every 105 Americans born in 1993 will develop a malignant melanoma in their lifetime. In contrast, the risk in 1935 was only one in 1,500, in 1960 it was one in 500, and in 1980 it was one in 250.

How is melanoma diagnosed? It’s all based on depth. If you catch a melanoma early and it hasn’t grown more than .75 millimeters into the skin, you have a nearly 100 percent survival rate. The deeper it is, the more likely it is to metastasize.

What does malignant melanoma look like? Unfortunately, melanoma looks different on everyone. It can be a brown mole with a reddish hue around the edges, or a mole that’s black, grey, or irregular shaped. It’s so important to check your own body, because you can get melanoma anywhere you have skin.

What are the treatment options with melanoma? If you find it early, the treatment is excision. There is no radiation or chemo

needed. If tumor has spread, survival rate isn’t good, but fortunately most melanomas are found early.

What is the risk of recurrence? If you catch it early, risk is close to zero. The deeper the melanoma at the time at diagnosis, the higher the risk for recurrence. The risk of recurrence skyrockets with anything over .75 millimeters.

Besides sunscreen, what are some preventative measures we can take? Wear sun protective clothing. I also recommend a pill called Heliocare – you can get it over-the-counter, and if you take it before you go out into the sun, it decreases your risk of sunburn. Gabrielle M. Sabini, MD

All About Arthritis What are the most common symptoms of arthritis?

Are certain people at a higher risk for developing arthritis?

fatty acids and high in vitamin E such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, tuna and trout.

There are two basic types of arthritis: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that causes stiffness and pain in the joints, and is usually the result of aging. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes joints to swell and become painful. The exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis is not known, although one reason for the prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis may be a high-fat, highcholesterol diet.

Inflammatory arthritis is more common in countries where rich foods are eaten, such as the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. (In a few people, some plant proteins, such as the gluten of wheat, may also be a contributor.)

• Nuts and Seeds rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids and high in vitamin E including unsalted nuts like walnuts, brazil nuts and almonds, and seeds like sunflower, linseeds and pumpkin seeds.

How is arthritis diagnosed?

• Anti-Inflammatory Foods such as turmeric, ginger, garlic and apples.

There is no singular test for diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis. Instead, rheumatoid arthritis is diagnosed based on a combination of the presentation of the joints involved, characteristic joint stiffness in the morning, the presence of blood rheumatoid factor and citrulline antibody, as well as findings of rheumatoid nodules and radiographic changes (X-ray testing).

Does diet affect arthritis? Yes. Some foods that may relieve general arthritis symptoms include: • Fruits, particularly those high in vitamin C, such as blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, kiwi fruit, peaches, mango and cantaloupe melon. • Vegetables high in vitamin A (beta-carotene) and vitamin C including carrots, squash, sweet potato, spinach, kale, collard greens, broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. • Oily Fish rich in omega-3 essential

• Pulses and Grains found in lentils, chickpeas, brown rice and whole wheat bread.

What are the most common treatments for arthritis? Recent studies have highlighted the role of food sensitivities in some arthritis sufferers, and this can involve the exclusion of obvious trigger foods. The ALCAT is the most effective and comprehensive sensitivity/intolerance test available. This differs from other food allergy or intolerance tests as it accurately and objectively measures leukocyte cellular reactivity in whole blood, which is a final common pathway of all mechanisms.

What are the best ways to manage arthritis pain? The following lifestyle changes can alleviate osteoarthritis and other types of joint inflammation: • Low-impact aerobic activity • Range of motion exercises for flexibility • Strength training for muscle tone • Sleeping 8 to 10 hours a night and taking naps during the day • Avoiding staying in one position for too long • Avoiding positions or movements that place extra stress on joints • Stress-reducing activities such as meditation, yoga or tai chi

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) for Varicose Veins What is EVLA and how is it different from sclerotherapy? Endovenous Laser Ablation or EVLA is a minimally invasive technique that can bring immediate relief from the symptoms of varicose veins. The procedure usually takes less than an hour and uses laser energy delivered in a thin fiberoptic probe. The difference between EVLA and sclerotherapy is that EVLA is aimed at treating larger veins using laser energy, while sclerotherapy involves a series of small injections of a solution into smaller more superficial veins.

Who is a good candidate for EVLA? Any patient that suffers from varicose vein disease and is in good general health is a good candidate for EVLA. Patients that are pregnant or have a history of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) are not. Patients should be thoroughly evaluated by a physician and require an ultrasound to determine if EVLA is the best treatment option for them.

How is EVLA performed? EVLA is a 45 minute procedure where a catheter is inserted into the defective vein. The procedure is done under local anesthesia using ultrasound guidance. A laser is threaded into the catheter and heats the lining of the vein. Then it is slowly pulled out of the vein, damaging it and causing it to shrink and seal shut. Once this happens, blood can no longer flow through the vein. This eliminates the pressure in the vein that caused it to bulge. There is no incision other than a small puncture where the catheter was inserted.

What are the risks associated with EVLA? Complications from EVLA are extremely rare. These may include numbness and tingling over the treated area, skin infection at the puncture site, DVT (deep vein thrombosis or blood clot which is rare) and phlebitis, which is redness, warmth and swelling of the treated vein. To minimize any risk associated with EVLA, we encourage patients to walk a lot after the procedure, wearing compression stockings and following up with a post procedure ultrasound.

What is the recovery time? Patients are immediately able to get up and walk following the procedure. They may experience some mild soreness, redness and bruising in the week following the procedure, but this is usually resolved by the end of the second week. Some patients may also feel a pulling sensation or tightness in the calf or thigh, but this is normal and soon passes as well. These symptoms can be managed by taking a non-aspirin anti-inflammatory for a few days following the procedure. Compression stockings are also required for a week or two following EVLA. This helps reduce swelling, protects against blood clots and speeds up the recovery process. After the procedure, walking and normal daily activities are encouraged. Rigorous exercise such as running, high impact aerobics and heavy weightlifting should be avoided for a week or two to get the best possible results from the procedure.

How successful is EVLA? Patients enjoy a 98 percent success rate after undergoing the EVLA procedure.

What causes neck pain?

What causes neck pain?

How is neck pain diagnosed?

By far, the most common cause of neck discomfort is poor posture. Slumping in a chair or sitting in front of a computer can cause the neck muscles to stretch in positions for sustained periods of time that ultimately result in spasm of the muscles which leads to neck pain. Other common causes of neck pain are trauma from motor vehicle accidents or work-out injuries due to over straining, as well as tension.

Typically, initial investigations are made by your doctor who will listen to your symptoms and examine you. If there are other symptoms with the neck pain, then an image (MRI, X-ray, or CT scan) is ordered to look at the structure of the cervical spine. Many times a special nerve test called a nerve conduction test is ordered of the arms to help better determine the details of the problem.

Are there different types of neck pain?

What are my treatment options?

Absolutely. Neck pain can come from pure muscle stretch, irritation, and spasm. It can also come from displaced or herniated discs in the cervical spine. These discs are cartilage cushions that sit between the vertebrae in the spine which allow the bones to float over each other without touching. If there is degeneration to the disc over time, the disc can slip out of place, or herniate, and compress on other structures in the spine, including the exiting nerves and the spinal cord itself. When the exiting nerve is affected, this is what is commonly referred to as “pinched nerve” syndrome.

Once all the information is gathered, medications such as anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxers may be prescribed. Stretching and posture retraining exercises may also be ordered under the guidance of a physical therapist. Ergonomic evaluation and modification of the work space may also occur to assist with appropriate posture maintenance. At Midtown Neurology, we have a physical therapy program that continues to offer exceptional relief for our patients – even for those who have tried and failed many other treatments. We urge you to call and schedule an evaluation.

When should I be worried about my neck pain? For purely muscle spasm or tension types of neck pain, if the symptoms persist for over a month, it should be investigated. If the neck pain is also associated with radiating pain in the arms or numbness in the arms or hands, this may represent a pinched nerve in the neck and should be investigated. Any time there is loss of function or muscle weakness in the arms this should be brought to the attention of your physician immediately – for a more significant compression may be occurring. Lastly, any neck pain that is associated with trouble walking, moving your legs, or controlling bladder or bowel function should be considered an urgency, for there may be a compression on the spinal cord itself.

Free local workshops help parents save thousands! Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

Dr. Leslie Botnick, Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder of Vantage Oncology will discuss breast cancer treatment, including the increased use of double mastectomy. Dr. Botnick is listed in Who’s Who of Doctors in America, and was named leading physician for treatment of Breast Cancer in Good Housekeeping Magazine.

EXPERT CONNECT

Why Weight Loss Is So Important With the national obesity rate reaching alarming heights, new diets are introduced; some with better results than others. One such diet is the hCG diet which combines a restrictive diet and the hormone hCG (Human Choronic Gonadotropin). As seen on the Dr. Oz show, hCG is a hormone that is secreted by pregnant women to ensure their fetus gets all the nutrients it needs to develop properly. In the 1950’s Dr. Simeons found that small doses of the natural hormone hCG, commonly found in high amounts in pregnant women, as well as small amounts in the adrenal glands, could decrease appetites and shave down inches on his overweight patients (both men and women). Fast forward to the present. One of the main concerns about hCG since the inception of the diet, the market has been flooded with supplements that claim they include the appetite suppressing hCG. When in reality many of these products have low to no trace of the hormone. The only way to get an effective dosage strength for long term weightloss is to have it prescribed by a medical doctor. This form of hCG is administered through daily injections of the hormone. “With proper medical supervision, the diet is safe,” says Dr. Alise Jones-Bailey. Many physicians who specialize in medical weightloss are working with individuals who are trying to lose weight in a short period of time, promoting a long term lifestyle change. Many of these patients find that the hCG diet has worked well. Dr. Jones-Bailey says “hCG works by telling the part of the brain which controls fat metabolism and storage to start burning fat instead of protein when the calories are reduced. The restrictive diet of 500 calories a day sustains the individual because the body is using up fat stores as energy while the hCG represses the feeling of hunger. The net effect is weight loss that can range from 3-6 lbs a week in both men and women. By resetting the hypothalamus to a new low default point, which minimizes carb cravings, an ongoing low carb diet is achievable long term.” Dr. Jones-Bailey further explains, “There is preliminary evidence from a small study done on clinically obese adults which notes that calorie restriction decreases insulin levels, thyroid and DNA damage. These markers are believed to promote longevity.” At the Equilibrium Weight Loss and Longevity Centers we promote a healthy lifestyle which includes hCG weight loss and hormone balancing. For your convenience we now have 2 locations, Atlanta and Roswell.

For the month of May, we are offering Mommy Makeovers. Mention Best Self and you will receive a $200 discount on our hCG weight loss program. Bring a friend for even more discounts.

my journey Chamique Holdsclaw Athlete and author brings light to the darkness of depression

Before she became a writer, Chamique Holdsclaw was a pro athlete in the WNBA who played one season with the Atlanta Dream in 2009. In 2000 she won an Olympic gold medal with Team USA at the Sydney Olympic Games, but during this time she was also battling depression. After seeking treatment, Chamique wrote about her experience. “By shedding light on a taboo subject, I hope to encourage people to seek mental healthcare and not be ashamed,” she says. What inspired you to write your book, “Breaking Through: Beating The Odds Shot After Shot”? The fact that people seem to always judge a book by its cover. I’ve fought a long, hard battle with depression and it hurt me that people didn’t understand. I had struggled with this, so I felt I could connect with people by taking them through my journey on and off the court.

What helped you to overcome your battle with depression? I promised God after my suicide attempt that if He left me unscathed, I would get help and use my voice to help others. I was ashamed that I had tried to take my life and deal with it alone. I had friends and family who would have supported me, but I didn’t see it that way. What do you do today to maintain a positive attitude? I don’t sweat the small stuff. I’m also blessed to have found my passion, and that’s helping others. The work I’m doing now feels better than any game winning shot I’ve ever made. What initially drew you to the sport of basketball and did you always have a passion for it? I always tell people basketball found me. I had just moved from the suburbs of New York with my grandmother. Luckily the basketball courts were right outside her window and she would let me play because she could see me. I enjoyed it from day one because it allowed me to be creative but it also served as a coping mechanism when my life was turned upside down. What are some of your favorite give-back moments? Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund and the Avon Breast Cancer Walk are two of the charities I’ve enjoyed working with. My favorite give-back moments are going to the shelters on Christmas and 70

Thanksgiving and helping feed the homeless. My grandmother used to feed the homeless once a week at our church and it makes me feel connected with her spirit. Did you always want to be an inspirational speaker? Since I became a pro athlete in the WNBA in 1999, I’ve been speaking to young girls about self-esteem and a healthy lifestyle. There are so many initiatives that the WNBA partners with, so it allows us to spread the message. I’m actually very shy and fought against it for so long. People would always tell me I came across as very heartfelt and sincere. Finally in 2010 I started seeing it in myself. I’ve learned how powerful my voice is and how many people I can positively affect. What do you do to stay healthy and active? I believe in total health: mind, body and spirit. I work out everyday through running, basketball, CrossFit, Muay Thai and kickboxing. I meditate to stay balanced and I make sure I speak to my therapist at least once a week. I also eat very healthy. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? My college coach Pat Summitt said, “Tough times don’t last but tough people do.” Are there any upcoming projects on the horizon? I want to continue using my story to inspire others. I will continue to speak across the United States and advocate for mental health awareness. I’ve become a spokesperson for an amazing group called Active Minds that is changing the conversation about mental health. I’m also looking forward to getting back on the basketball court after an Achilles injury in 2010.

What were some of the challenges you faced and what type of help did you seek? I have been battling depression since I was 11 years old. I was in denial for so long, but after a suicide attempt in 2007, I finally realized I had a problem and needed to get help. Admitting this was the hardest thing to do. I had associated depression with weakness and I had to get over it quickly. I started seeing a psychiatrist and went on medication to help me with clinical depression.
