UNDER THE BLACK FLAG

Ahoy me hearties! The depiction of pirates has been a constant in Australian art for many years with artists Norman and Lionel Lindsay obsessed with them from a young age. This exhibition looks at the world of skullduggery on the briny deep in the Gallery Collection.

MURRAY WALKER: TIME TRAVELLER

Born in Ballarat in 1937, Walker has worked in diverse media including painting, printmaking, ceramics & tapestry design. In Europe in 1983, he began creating collages to diarise his travels. His use of found objects, from driftwood to tin cans, discarded household items to welding slag, may appear primitive if not outright ‘punk’, but these works embody layers of reference to literature, art history and popular culture.

BREN LUKE:

STREETS OF YOUR TOWN

Ballarat artist Bren Luke studied Fine Art at the University of Ballarat, majoring in painting and printmaking. Over the past decade his work has focused on traditional drawing techniques primarily using pen and ink on paper. In this exhibition he explores the streets of Ballarat, highlighting some of its lesser-known built forms such as quirky shopfronts, back alleys and mid-20th century architecture.

A powerful new series of drawings and ceramic vessels of immense beauty and intrigue. Set within the colonial Australian gold rush era, the artists challenge stereotypical narratives, recreating traditional scenes with a powerful female protagonist avenging the murder of her mother by performing wild and powerful acts on her harem of enslaved men. Accepted histories are upended, replaced by a potent gothic mythological tale of female power, lust & revenge! (Gallery closed Fri 16 Dec - Wed 4 Jan).
