hanks to the recent survey, we all now know that Oakham is, officially, the happiest place to live. And who can say it better than the locals – via Facebook – yes get with it you malcontents! I love Tom Scott’s initiative for the inspiring www. facebook.com/#!/VisitOakham page... This is the way to get our town on the map – forget Google! I know some of you modern folk think Facebook is prehistoric, but trust me it is still the networking deity – oh and twitter I guess (follow me @RutlandLiving). Now, I gather there has been some negative response as people feel the page is too Mill Street focused – maybe it is, but where is the harm in that? We need people shopping in Oakham and as it’s such a bijoux town that tourists cannot help to discover other treats. Hambleton Bakery has a national name, Lauren’s Heavenly Cup Cakes are to die for (find her at Impact) and Hirst and Hirst is a social networker’s dream come true (www.hirst and hirst.com). Speaking of Church Street, terrible bad luck to L’Oliveto and Beans but here’s hoping they will be back presently. I have to say I miss my (very spicy and no cream please) Spaghetti Vongole and my (one shot, not too much chocolate, in a larger cup) Skinny Mocha. Yes I am fussy – well I did live in the States for 5 years! And it is no secret that it took me a while to settle in Rutland but since moving into Oakham town itself 2 years ago, I too have never been happier. So come on all, let’s be positive and enjoy of what others must be so envious. Please do try and shop locally,

hen Pippa Gunter moved her young family from London to Rutland, she was seeking a property to completely refurbish and found just the right house in Oakham. “The house was the perfect fit for my ideas; I love clean lines and open-plan spaces with a retro feel to the interior décor. This house was built in the 1970s and was crying out to be updated.” Architects Rayner Davies were commissioned to help Pippa formulate a plan to extend and reformat the entire lower storey of the house. The result is a stunning light and airy kitchen and dining area leading into a comfortable and contemporary family living room. “We really enjoy spending time in here watching movies, listening to music or just relaxing.” Three years in the making from planning to completion, the living space is beautifully finished and proves that a sleek, clutter free home is achievable – even for growing families.

SHOPS & SE RVICE S Party ideas for toddlers and young children are plentiful but when it comes to teenagers, organising a “cool” party can be a minefield. Thirteen year old Lexie Meade uncovers the formula for a wicked birthday on a budget

Pamper Parties

Pomegranate Beauty in the centre of Oakham makes party planning fun and convenient. Owner Faith can host your party in her salon or at your home. Each guest chooses three treatments from a beauty menu including eyebrow shaping, nail file and polish, subtle daytime make-up and personal skincare consultations. The price is £10 per person and party hosts receive a Pomegranate gift.

Photo Studio Session Adventure Parties Whitwell at Rutland Water is perfect for a mixed group. Try a session on the climbing wall and high ropes - the cost is £99 for six children and £12 each thereafter. Prebooking essential. “A climbing party was a brilliant idea. We had a really mixed group and there was something for everyone to do.” Sian, Oakham. For groups aged twelve years and over, another brilliant adrenaline packed party idea is paintballing. Alamo Paintballing in Peterborough provides great value day or half day packages. These prices vary depending on size of group. “My friends and I celebrated my thirteenth birthday at Alamo and we all got straight into the spirit of the competition – an awesome day.” Charlie, Ketton. Ski Snowboard Parties – another all action party ideal to keep a mixed group happy is a Ski Snowboard Party at Tallington. A fun packed hour session gives you an insight into a new sport, minimum six people skiing or snowboarding at £13 per child. You can even download an invitation from Tallington to send out to your friends. Party food available at the Lakeside Bar from £4 per head. Water babies can hire a flotilla of canoes or kayaks at Rutland Water or Tallington Lakes both of which include the hire of a wetsuit in the price and provide either a picnic area or place to eat inside. Also available at Tallington – the hilarious water Zorbing…. See it to believe it at £5 per person for a ten minute session.

A really great idea either for a girly group or a mixed bunch is a studio photo session. Some of my friends recently celebrated a thirteenth birthday with a shoot at The Studio 17 in Leicestershire. We took several outfits each and were directed through a two hour shoot. The results were brilliant with all the pictures uploaded to a private gallery on the studio’s website for purchase if you wish with an A4 size photo of the group as a party souvenir. Our own Rutland & Market Harborough Living photographer Elli Dean will provide a fun photo shoot party, either at your chosen location or at her studio. Prices vary for length of shoot and location.

Discos and DJs

A disco party is perfect for a larger group - try Calico Bar & Kitchen in Oakham where the DJ and bar staff is included in the price which makes budgeting so simple. The Catmose Club has a very teenage friendly function room with a large dance floor and deck space and Braunston Village Hall is ideal in good weather, with a picturesque garden at the front - great for barbeques. Take an ipod or hire a DJ - Kidzco provide a great disco with full light and laser show and DJ Steve will source your playlist if you have special music you want to hear.

RUTLAND WATER: FACTS AND FIGURES • Rutland Water was built to supply water to the East Midlands, using water pumped from the rivers Nene and Welland. It was one of 64 sites that were investigated at a time when other options, such as barrage across the Wash, were rejected. • Construction started in 1972 and took five years; the reservoir was filled over three years between 1975 and 1978. It was originally known as Empingham Reservoir to Rutland Water, but in 1976 was named Rutland Water in response to local views. This male osprey is known as Mr Rutland. He has raised 27 chicks since first breeding here in 2001. Here he is enjoying a rainbow trout for breakfast. Left: The female osprey is slightly larger than the male.

L

ocals were outraged in the 1960s when news filtered out of plans to build a massive reservoir at Empingham. Two picturesque valleys just outside Oakham were to be flooded to create the biggest lake in England, flooding valuable agricultural land and submerging farms, cottages – and even two villages – in the process. But the objectors’ voices went the same way as the sleepy hamlets of Lower and Nether Hambleton – demolished and drowned. The growing population of the East Midlands was in desperate need of more water and after ten years of planning and consultation the Empingham Reservoir Act was passed. To rub salt into the wounds of the locals, they faced the prospect of living on the doorstep of one of Europe’s biggest construction projects as the bulldozers and builders moved in. They feared that property prices would fall as rapidly as the waters rose. They feared the area would be blighted for ever. How wrong they were. Today, you need to be very rich indeed to afford a property with a view of the stunningly beautiful Rutland Water, which is what the controversial reservoir was named when it finally opened in 1976. Thirty-six years on, Rutland Water looks like it has always been part of the local landscape. This is one of the UK’s prime beauty spots, attracting millions of human visitors every year. But one of Rutland Water’s biggest success stories is the very special feathered visitors that fly here every year from West Africa. The osprey is a magnificent bird of prey. With a wingspan of 65 inches and a habit of soaring high above water before divebombing and catching fish in its talons, it is also a spectacular one. But like so much of Britain’s native wildlife, it was persecuted to extinction in England by egg collectors and gamekeepers. The last pair to raise chicks did so in Somerset, in 1847. But a few ospreys clung on in Scotland and could still be seen flying over England as they migrated to and from their winter quarters in West Africa. Some even stopped over briefly at Rutland Water to join the venue’s anglers in pursuit of trout. Conservationists, including the Leicestershire

and Rutland Wildlife Trust, dearly hoped these migratory birds would one day stay here long enough to raise a family. But they never did, until 1996 when a special license was obtained to introduce six-week-old chicks taken from selected osprey nests in Scotland and release them at Rutland Water. The youngsters were reared in pens at Rutland before they were released. And to cut a long story short, the project has been a resounding success – to the extent that Rutland Water now has its own sustainable osprey population, with birds that were bred here now returning from Africa and raising families of their own. “This year, four pairs of adults have raised nine chicks,” said Tim Mackrill, senior reserve officer at Rutland Water. “But what is more significant is that younger birds that aren’t yet old enough to breed have also returned to the area seeking out potential nest sites for the future.” Rutland Water’s most famous residents attract 30,000 visitors every year to make use of the venue’s excellent hides, which offer a commanding view of the birds without disturbing them. There is also a permanent nestcam, which gets an average of 5,500 hits a day from bird lovers all over the world. “Only yesterday I got an email from a lady in California who says she tunes in every day to watch developments,” says Tim, who heads up a small team of staff as well as 160 volunteers. “The volunteers are crucial to the success of the project. Most of them are local but some come from much further afield to play a part. I know one lady from Staffordshire who regularly makes a 160-mile round trip to be here,” says Tim. The volunteers’ roles include guarding the osprey nests around the clock. Even in 21st century Britain there are criminals prepared to try to steal osprey eggs for their illegal collections. Happily, they are outnumbered by conservation-minded folk. “The osprey project is a massive success story and I’m proud to play a part in it,” adds Tim. And it’s all a far cry from those days in the 1970s when locals feared for the worst.

• The hamlets of Nether and Middle Hambleton were lost beneath the rising waters. Normanton Church was also initially earmarked for demolition, but saved following a public outcry. Today it is protected by a surrounding bank and the interior has been turned into a museum. • Less fortunate was Beehive Cottage, in Nether Hambleton. The medieval wattle and daub home was believed to be the oldest cottage in Rutland, but that wasn’t enough to save it from the bulldozers. Many believe it should have been dismantled, stone by stone, and re-erected elsewhere. • Today, the reservoir’s owners, Anglian Water, pump up to 270 million litres per day through thousands of miles of underground pipes to supply 500,000 people in five counties. • It has a surface area of 4.19 square miles and a capacity of 124 million litres of water. It is 34 metres deep at its deepest point.

• Besides bird lovers, Rutland Water also attracts anglers – it is an internationally famous trout fishery – sailors, cyclists, walkers and lovers of the great outdoors. There is a 25-mile path around its shores so that you can walk or cycle to keep fit and enjoy the stunning views. You can even go afloat for a guided tour of the lake afloat on the Rutland Belle cruiser. • There’s something at Rutland Water for all the family. • For more details on Rutland Water’s Osprey Project – and to visit the brilliant nestcam live stream – go to www.ospreys.org.uk.

FASHION

Style Gurus This month Vanessa Hollander interviews some of our local fashionistas to uncover their own style as well as getting a preview of the autumn/winter season

I

n my role as Fashion Editor I get to meet some of the most stylish and fashionable women in our area so I decided that it was time we found out a bit more about them, what inspires them about fashion, who are their style icons and what they’re excited about for autumn/winter 2012

Attic Limited, Stamford and Oakham Name – Marion Lindley, Position – Co-owner of Attic with my sister-in-law, Kathryn White. Background – Kathryn and I opened Attic six years ago, firstly in Stamford and then 18 months ago in Oakham. I love fashion and I love retail. My grandmother taught me to sew and as soon as I was old enough I got a Saturday job working in a trendy boutique in Sunderland. After school I trained as a secretary and landed a dream job as PA to the late Miss Jean Muir. A move out of London to Nottingham and I continued my career working in the design room for Paul Smith. Favourite Brands – American Vintage because the quality is superb; the colours are always in tune with current trends and the shapes epitomise the essence of grown-up casual dressing. Petit Bateau because I love their French chic and Nice Things (a Spanish brand) because of their quirkiness. Your Own Personal Style – Boyish. Smart but casual. I love jackets because I appreciate the time and skill required to make them and a well-cut, wellmade jacket is a thing of beauty! I don’t really do dresses! Who is your Favourite Style Icon and Why? – Paul Smith because he has an unswerving dedication to realising his vision without compromising quality and style. Plus his designs are enduring. What’s coming up for winter? What’s coming into your shop and what are you excited about? – We have our first collection from BZR, so very excited to see how this goes. Knitwear is an important story for the coming season and they have some great pieces in lots of lovely berry colours as well as the usual navy and grey. Colour is also key for AW12 – adding a bright knit and some coloured jeans to your existing wardrobe will bring it bang up to date. We also have Tommy Hilfiger for the first time this autumn - a great American preppy brand. If you can only afford one outfit this winter, what would you buy? What would you throw away from last year? – I would buy an oversized textured sweater to wear with some slim legged jeans from MiH or MAC and great ankle boots from Manas. I would get rid of my wide legged trousers as they are so tricky to wear!

Blessed Fashions, Oakham Name – Carly Aldred Position - Company Director Background – I did Fashion Retail at Nottingham College concentrating on styling, branding, buying, trend forecasting and my favourite, visual merchandising! After a few years working in a women’s boutique in Derbyshire, I decided it was time to start my own business. My first shop was Blessed in Newark, with the Oakham store following just a year ago. Favourite Brands - Twenty8Twelve because it’s so quirky yet stylish and Malene Birger as it is pure effortless sophistication. Your Own Personal Style - Changes day to day but I love to be comfortable! I’m a casual girl! Maxi skirt, sandals and a tank top or fluid crop with my big sunglasses is heaven for me! Who is your Favourite Style Icon and Why? - My style icon has to be between Sienna Miller and Millie Mackintosh from Made in Chelsea! They always look effortlessly amazing. What’s coming up for winter? What’s coming into your shop and what are you excited about? - A/ W12 is looking great! We’re seeing a lot of mint greens, fushia pinks etc, and mixing them in with soft greys, mellow nudes and warm navys. I can’t pick one outfit as I’m excited about lots but for day I would choose a Twenty8Twelve leather jacket in nude pink, raspberry skinny jeans by Twenty8Twelve, white vest by American vintage, pink bobble hat by Twenty8Twelve and urban style tan boots from Hudson.

Vanilla, Oakham Name - Felicity Slater Position - Owner of Vanilla, Oakham for two years Background - I have always been interested in clothes and fashion. I adored dressing up as a little girl, especially when it came to piling on all the accessories and hobbling around in my Mum’s high heels! I was always sewing, and would often make my own clothes. Previously I owned a soft furnishing business for 15 years, which again sprang from my love of working with colour and textiles. Favourite Brands - Stills who produce flattering, classic shapes and beautiful fabrics with the use of muted colours. Great for disguising those curves we don’t like! Le Petit Baigneur is a lovely French brand that I buy mainly for the interesting knitwear and also Hartford, a Parisian brand for everyday wear. Your Own Personal Style - is a simple one really. I love having classic items in my wardrobe that I can update with different accessories or partner with something in the

current season’s colours or textures to have an on trend look and feel. Who is your Favourite Style Icon and Why? - My all time favourite style icon has got to be Christian Dior. Known for introducing the “New Look” after War II, he really set the fashion world on fire. I adore his perfectly proportioned silhouettes that enhance the female body so beautifully.

What’s coming up for winter? What’s coming into your shop and what are you excited about? - It’s great seeing more colour choices in the autumn/winter collections compared to those of last year. Rich autumnal shades and metallic fabrics are the trend highlights. There are some lovely, flattering jersey dresses and jackets coming in from Stills. These are perfect for dressing up or down.

Jacks for Women, Market Harborough and Oundle

Cavells, Oakham

Name – Gill Haynes Position – Partner of Jacks with my husband, Paul Background – I trained in the West End in London at Dickens and Jones and then opened Jacks over 10 years ago. Favourite Brands – I love Elisa Cavaletti as it’s so different from any other brand. Each item is like a piece of art, the more you look at them the more you see! Another favourite collection is Penny Black. It is an elegant collection, again from Italy and their dresses and coats are beautifully cut and flatter a woman’s shape. Your Own Personal Style – My personal style is best described as being relaxed and fairly casual. Although I love to wear dresses, I mostly wear trousers and jeans as they suit my lifestyle better. Who is your Favourite Style Icon and Why? At the moment I think that Miranda Kerr has a great style and an easy way of putting an outfit together. Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, also continues to wow us with her elegant dress sense and I love her ability to re-use her outfits. What’s coming up for winter? What’s coming into your shop and what are you excited about? This winter many of our collections include a lot of highly textured fabrics and knitwear, look out for the oversized jumpers and skinny jeans. Colours will include dark cherry red, teal and orange to sit alongside and lift the usual darker colours of winter. Dresses for day will be cosy and used either as a stand alone piece or used as a base for layering. If you can only afford one outfit this winter, what would you buy? What would you throw away from last year? My treat to myself would be a toffee coloured cashmere knit coat and dress by a small Swiss company called Princess Goes Hollywood or one of their fabulously bright ponchos to throw on on dreary dull days! I am throwing away my over the knee boots as I always felt a bit kinky in them so they have to go!

Name – Rosie Charlesworth, Position – Stylist and Event Organiser for Cavells Background – I have worked for Cavells for nearly 6 years now having moved up to Rutland from Somerset in 2006 where I had been working as a Area Manager for an independent clothing company for 19 years running 5 stores! Favourite Brands – I absolutely love Odd Molly as it’s a little quirky (like me!), very feminine and perfect for layering. Chinti and Parker have beautiful cashmere sweaters and basic t-shirts with a twist. I usually layer these with my favourite underpinning vests from Rosemunde which add a little lace at the hem. My favourite jean brand is Seven; they fit brilliantly and I have already purchased a lovely bottle green pair for the autumn! Your Own Personal Style - I would describe my style as eclectic as I like to mix up different trends and brands. Who is your Favourite Style Icon and Why? - My style icon is Sarah Jessica Parker; I love how she can put things together that almost shouldn’t work but they somehow always do! What’s coming up for winter? What’s coming into your shop and what are you excited about? - I’m organising 3 individual makeover mornings in September, November and December to give styling, make-up and hair tips relevant to winter. We have Bombshell dresses coming in - brilliantly designed for all shapes which look stunning on. Some great colours from J Brand jeans in a soft pink and coated denim, and gorgeous footwear from Penelope Chilvers. For me personally, I am most excited about my new Mulberry Del Ray bag. It is the newest iconic piece to be added to the Mulberry range and we are thrilled to be stocking it at Cavells. If you can only afford one outfit this winter, what would you buy? What would you throw away from last year? - I would buy a perfect fitted pair of coloured jeans from Seven, a printed silk shirt from Equipment and a pair of ankle boots from Paul Smith. I would throw away black from my wardrobe - I used to live in black but have found over the past year that colour has entered my life in a big way! RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING SEPTEMBER 2012

Natural Beauties Forget high-tech gadgets and gizmos; it’s time to go back-to-basics with your beauty routine! Catherine Batkin looks at the best natural products on the market today

HAIR CARE: Simon Cawthorne At this cutting edge salon in Mill Street, they stock the ever-popular Bumble and Bumble range of styling and hair care products. The shampoos and conditioners are infused with lots of lovely ingredients to nourish and care for hair such as seawood and marine kelp (great for deep cleansing), coconut and kukui nut oil to moisturise dry hair and tea tree oil and peppermint to soothe irritated scalps. One of the most exciting additions to the range is the Straight Shampoo and Conditioner which are specially formulated for thick, coarse, frizzy and unmanageable hair. They’re sulphate-free so don’t strip the hair of its natural oils (sulphates are found in washing up liquid and cheap shampoos to get the foamy lather). Since using sulphate-free shampoo the condition of my hair has improved dramatically – I wouldn’t go back! Thomas Hair Salon One of my favourite discoveries for hair (ever!) is Moroccanoil. Available from Thomas Hairdressers in the Maltings, the products are based around argan oil which contains unsaturated fatty acids and is rich in tocopherols; this works like vitamin E to renew cell structure, increase hair’s elasticity and restores shine and body to over-processed, dull hair. There are a huge number of products within the range but if you are going to splash out on one thing, make it the Moroccanoil Original Treatment Oil. This ultra-light formula absorbs into hair instantly - I work it through my hair before blowdrying and find I don’t need to use any other styling products. A little goes a long way and it instantly eliminates frizz and protects against the heat from the dryer. Essence Hair Salon Based in Uppingham, Essence now exclusively concentrate on hair care services and use the Aveda range of products. Aveda are renowned for their increased use of naturally sourced ingredients and they go beyond this to ensure that 90% of their raw herbal ingredients are organic. The result is a range of products that are exceptionally kind and gentle to the hair, yet offer great results. Choose from the latest Aveda hair colours for a fresh new look this season. Keep coloured hair in great condition with shampoos and conditioners suitable for your shade – Black Malva shampoo will enrich dark tones, Camomile will brighten blonde highlights and Madder Root is great for red and auburn girls.

BEAUTY: ESPA at Creme Hair & Beauty Creme Hair and Beauty use the ESPA range of beauty products and Ruth Ward told me how beneficial they are for skin: “By taking a holistic approach, ESPA treatments are as much for the inner self and mind as they are for the face and body. They are as natural as they can be and rich in essential oils, plant extracts and marine elements. Deeply relaxing and de-stressing oils, revitalising seaweeds and nourishing creams help to achieve outstanding results on the face, body and mind. One of my favourite treats is the Salt and Oil scrub - £30 for 25mins. This exceptional skin softening body exfoliation will leave your skin moisturised, smooth and soft. A compact treatment with a truly dramatic result!” Holistic treatments in stunning surroundings At Stapleford Park Spa they are renowned for their excellent range of massages – and where better to relax in acres of beautiful countryside? To really soothe away your stresses, opt for the Hot stone massage or Warm bamboo massage, both of which use heated implements to intensify the treatment. Or if it’s more of a vigorous massage you want to dispel aches and pains, then the Full body Swedish massage is a great option. Exciting launch at The Beauty Room in Oakham Kimberley at The Beauty Room is proud to offer Dermalogica Skincare treatments. Dermalogica products shun the industry norm of using cheap chemicals like lanolin which can have skinclogging capabilities, triggering breakouts as well as artificial fragrances and colours, which can increase acne infection and skin sensitisation. Kimberley has trained at the International Dermal Institute and told me how Dermalogica Face Mapping works: “Rather than analysing the skin in general terms, face mapping divides the face into fourteen distinct zones, assessing individual problems and needs. Simply choose what length of treatment you would like and I can customise a skincare treatment to address your personal skin health requirements.” RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING SEPTEMBER 2012

MAKE THE SWITCH: It’s easy to make one change to your beauty routine to switch from using chemical-laden products to something more natural. Try these out: Hair removal: Try the ancient method of sugaring instead of waxing for long-term hair removal. This simple solution of sugar, lemon juice and water is more effective than waxing; removing more hairs first time around and far less likely to cause post-wax irritation. Try Moom (available online or in larger Boots stores) as their formulation also includes skincalming camomile and tea tree oil. Daily skincare routine: A quick glance at the ingredients on the packaging of your cleanser, toner and moisturiser will probably reveal a whole host of chemical nasties. Parabens, dimethicone and ethylene oxide are not ideally what you’d want your delicate skin to be absorbing. At Pomegranate on Mill Street, Faith stocks the Korres skincare range which contain only pure, natural ingredients – the White Tea Gel Cleanser is a good option for all skin types. Mineral Make-up: Most high street brand cosmetics contain comedogenic oils that clog the pores and can cause irritation to sensitive skin. But the new breed of mineral make-up allows skin to breathe so that natural luminosity can shine through. Great brands include Mii make-up at Creme Hair & Beauty, Youngblood Cosmetics at The Beauty Room and Jane Iredale at Vicienté Beauty & Bridal. Chemical-free kids: Children’s skin is thinner than that of an adult and therefore absorbs more of what you put onto it – so you need to be even more careful with the products you use. A great and reasonably-priced natural skin and hair care range for children is Green People. Pop into Natures Dispensary in Oakham and try the Top to Toe Lavender Bath Wash – a great relaxant to use at bedtimes!

WHAT’S YOUR TYPE?

Choosing your natural beauty products based on your individual skin type will get the most out of the active ingredients. Dry skin: Moisturisers containing nut oils, rose and honey are all excellent for nourishing dry skin. Try the Korres Wild Rose 24 Hour Moisturising and Brightening Cream from Pomegranate. Oily skin: Greasy skin needs a little help soaking up the excess oil, without stripping it completely as this could exacerbate the problem. Try a mud mask from the Dead Sea Spa Magik range at Natures Dispensary once a week – this will help remove deep-seated impurities from congested skin. Unbalanced skin: Both lavender and camomile have soothing properties for skins that suffer from eczema, acne or allergies. They are anti-inflammatory and contain natural antiseptics – the Organic Lavender and Camomile Soap from Spiezia Organics is a great buy. Sensitive skin: Marshmallow extract is an effective emollient to soften and soothe even the most sensitive skins without an adverse reaction (and is particularly good for sun-stressed skin). I love Burt’s Bees Marshmallow Vanishing Cream which absorbs into your skin on contact. Ageing skin: Cleansers and toners containing hibiscus are excellent for skin as it ages as they contain natural AHA’s which act as exfoliants to reveal younger skin. Boots the chemist do a Botanics range containing some wonderful active ingredients; the All Bright hibiscus cleansing cream and toner are both excellent.

Murrays Celebrate Two Hundred Years Popular Rutland family firm Murrays are about to celebrate their company’s bicentenary. Amander Meade meets partners Grant Murray and his father Scott to dig a little deeper into the archives hree generations of Murrays have been successfully in business as Chartered Surveyors and Estate Agents in Rutland and their fascinating family history is entwined in that of the town itself. The origins of the company were established in 1812 when Mr David Royce established an auctioneering and land Management Company in Oakham. The company known at that time as Messrs. Royce flourished and grew under the stewardship of the Royce family who were notable for their astute business sense. Best known was the last in line, Mr David Needham Royce who also served on Rutland County Council from the day it was formed until his death in 1938. He was a very much loved character locally and it was said with affection when he died that there were few in Rutland who did not mourn his loss. During the 1930s, Scott’s father Roland Murray joined the firm as a partner and after a restructure in 1977, the company took his name. Scott followed his father’s profession and became a Chartered Surveyor as did his own son Grant and together they have developed and grown the business over three regional offices and overseen a few changes of their own. “All aspects of the property business have altered beyond recognition during the last century,” explains Scott, who has an encyclopaedic knowledge of local history and can tell many stories about the origins of well known property in the region and its ownership. The Murrays have an astonishing collection of original documents preserved since 1812 including logbooks containing handwritten lists of every lot that Messrs. Royce auctioned – a

complete social history of Rutland in itself – and their Oakham branch operates from its Market Street offices which were purpose built 120 years ago. When he began helping out his Dad at the age of ten, Grant remembers cattle auctions in the market square and has grown up absorbing Scott’s passion for the region taking it forward and bringing his own expertise to the family firm. “During my lifetime working in property I would say it was the internet that has had the most revolutionary effect on how we work. That said, people don’t buy property solely from the internet, they still rely on teams like ours to find them the right home or buyer.” According to Grant, the winning formula is sound advice coupled with exceptional customer service. “We have a superb team who are highly trained and pride themselves on their very personal approach. Thanks to our history in the region, we also have unrivalled local knowledge backed up by the latest marketing technology to ensure

that the very best estate agency methods are utilised in the sale and letting of properties.” Well known for their Estate Agency and Lettings, Murrays also provide a wide breadth of professional services in Chartered Surveying, rural Land Agency, Commercial property, Planning and Development and are members of the leading property organisations, which ensure accountability and the very highest levels of service and professionalism. With such a rich heritage in the town, the Murrays continue to enjoy growth and are currently undertaking a programme of refurbishment across all three of their offices Oakham, Uppingham and Stamford to celebrate their continued success. I think Mr Royce would be proud of them.

EATING OUT

The Wicked Witch Nicholas Rudd Jones enjoys a second helping…

A

fter our first very positive review of the Wicked Witch, we decided to re-visit a couple of months later to see how things were going. Dameon Clarke, who was helping out in the kitchen from the start, has now been appointed Head Chef and this will be good news to his many gastronomic devotees in the region. Dameon first became known locally when he was at Nick’s Restaurant in Oakham, then the Collyweston Slater and latterly at his own restaurant Assiette in Stamford. He began his stellar culinary career at the Michelin 3 star Gavroche restaurant in London. At the Wicked Witch he is cooking very fine, but not over complex food. It is great food but not fine dining. In Dameon’s words: “I am returning more to the style of cooking at the Collyweston Slater rather than the more complex fine dining of Assiette.” We began with sushi tuna with mint & sugar – an absolutely delicious

The Old White Hart, Lyddington Nicholas Rudd-Jones went with some work colleagues for a business-cum-social lunch in one of Rutland’s prettiest villages

I

hadn’t been to the Old White Hart in a good while, and it was a pleasure to find the place on such good form. The ambience of the pub is delightful, with good indoor spaces and plenty of space outside leading down to a paddock and a general sense of a rustic idyll. What has made this pub immensely popular over the last few months has been the half price menu that runs lunch and dinner Monday to Thursday and dinner on Sunday evenings. That changes the equation from good value pub grub to unbeatable value pub grub. And with a very experienced chef in the shape of Stuart East (he owns the pub together with his wife Holly, who is front of house) in charge, the food is well cooked and inventive. He has been head chef

dish, with each flavour standing separately but still working in harmony. Next up a three-hour cooked duck’s egg (the slow heat creates a rich consistency for the yolk) atop white and green asparagus, cep mushrooms and pecorino cheese. For the mains I had succulent duck with duck hearts, celeriac and baby lettuce; whilst my partner enjoyed a ‘lobster soup’ (eaten mainly with a knife and fork), which comprised lobster, beetroot, peas and a quail’s egg. Finally for dessert (this is in not a restaurant where you would want to miss a course), we enjoyed a strawberry confection, constructed at the table, of strawberries, clotted cream, strawberry soup and white chocolate powder – indulgent and combining many different textures. All in all, food thoroughly to be recommended. The Wicked Witch, Bridge St, Ryhall, PE9 4HH Tel: 01780 763649 www.ryhallwitch.co.uk

for 15 years and was originally a butcher by trade. It’s a sign of his commitment to the cause of fresh produce and good value that he gets up at 3.30am every week to go off to Birmingham market to buy everything he needs for the coming week, having often worked in the kitchen until midnight the previous night. We were delighted with our choices. These included a confit leg and sauteed breast of guinea fowl; melon, plum tomato, Buffalo Mozarella with fresh mint, coriander and olive oil; and a Monkfish tail with buttered samphire, mussels and cream sauce. Inventive, interesting and delicious. For dessert, Tracy had the Strawberries with strawberry coulis and cream; whilst Helen really enjoyed the warm chocolate and nut brownie with meringue, dark chocolate ice cream, baileys and Caramel Sauce. Probably no reason for us locals to stay the night, but perhaps for a weekend overflow or wedding worth considering as they have 10 well-appointed bedrooms. What Motivates a 21st Century Student? Abigail Richardson spoke with local head teachers to ascertain their views on how to motivate teenage pupils, the .com generation, in the 21st century no one really learns if he or she doesn’t stretch oneself. A key part of an all round educational process is to learn from mistakes – take a risk and have a go.” “They need to think for themselves” The Oakham student is very much encouraged to become an independent learner inside and outside of the classroom. There is a plethora of extra curricular activities that encourage independence and success, for example Voluntary Action, CCF, Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Nigel recently took the opportunity to follow a 4th form student for the day and reminded himself of the wealth of diverse activities on offer during a normal teaching day. All of these clearly help challenge the individual in all sorts of different ways and feed into the notion of independence. He acknowledged, however, that all of this multi-tasking would elicit a roller coaster of emotions, which need to be allowed for.

Nigel Lashbrook - Headmaster of Oakham School “What works with a 10/11 year old often works with a 15/16 year old” There are many formal awards during the term and those that are given at speech days but Nigel believes the informal rewards – “a pat on the back” are just as important as any trophy. “What is important is to have policies and consistency. Children like individual attention such as personal letters or notes from the head teacher, head of house or form teacher. Optimas and Commendations are given for excellence, but probably more freely in the younger years. We like to make a fuss of achievements and invite groups over to Deanscroft, the Headmaster’s house, for cake or even Champagne, when they are old enough.” “Criticism needs to be constructive” All Oakham School pupils carry a ‘Red Book’ which is a termly diary but it also outlines all the school’s rules and sanctions. “A sanction deals with an event but is also there to instil responsibility for the actions of the young person. But the reality of educating young people is that they make mistakes and if they don’t make mistakes, they won’t learn. Sometimes I worry for the ‘star’ pupils who seem to coast so easily through school life as

28

“Things stay the same” “It’s just as easy for teenagers to feel inadequate and have low self esteem now as it ever was. What is crucial is to understand the importance of praising children and any reward system must not detract from the underlying principle of giving praise in order to build selfconfidence and self-esteem. Teenagers are very quick to spot shallowness. They need a great deal of tangible praise and to be able to understand why they have done well. Teachers need to find the time to explain why a child is being praised – why achieving individual set targets and goals is so important and rewarding. …and it is important not to screen them from high standards and high expectations.” Teens “There is (and always has been) a hormonal war within the individual in the teenage years and certainly self-esteem issues have recently become just as common in the younger generation.” To tackle this Oakham believes in a three way partnership between the child, the school and the parents (or home) where the 3 work together to celebrate highs and manage the lows. Nigel admits that sometimes there are disagreements but ultimately this open communication is the key to encouraging a truly independent individual at 18, ready to face the world. • Contact: Tel: 01572 758758, www.oakham.rutland.sch.uk

Richard Harman – Headmaster of Uppingham School Rewards and the Personal Touch At Uppingham School pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their own progress and receive very regular reports on their academic work which form the basis for individual discussions with tutors, Housemasters and Housemistresses. Pupils who perform consistently well are congratulated by the Headmaster at termly Commendation Assemblies and awards are given for particularly excellent pieces of work and other achievements. Younger pupils can be given ‘commendations’ for notable effort and

achievement by teachers in the classroom, and a trophy is presented three times a year to the boarding house whose members have accumulated the highest number. The School maintains a traditional Speech Day prize giving when achievements by pupils in all year groups are celebrated in a number of fields, including academic, sporting, musical and artistic. Richard, however, believes that these formal rewards are not always enough: “Systems have their place and are important but much more important is the personal touch and the giving of time and, paradoxically, because we live in the (fast paced) modern world, both aspects are often overlooked. Boarding school allows the time to find those few precious minutes to give praise. Knowing an individual is paramount. There is a gender difference and girls tend to react differently to praise but everyone needs to feel that he/she is valued, recognised and known and is not just a name on a register. It is very powerful when an older person, who is mutually respected and liked, believes in you.” Boarding Environment As Uppingham is predominantly a boarding school there are many occasions when the staff and pupils meet socially, for example at the formal lunch and also in house where Richard and his colleagues see students outside the formalities of school life and most importantly where human relationships can be developed. The daily contact with House staff provides the opportunity for the recognition of success

Sanctions “People need to know there are consequences but sanctions should be a last step and used sparingly. Children need clear boundaries, a sense of community and to be loved. Knowing them well, recognising them, this is the key. Targets and technology have their place but it comes down to the basics – love and recognition. Today time is often squeezed out. Because time is such a valuable commodity in today’s world and we are all so time-poor, it has become such a valuable tool. Paradoxically children of the modern world need to feel more secure than ever before, more known, more centred and to feel that he or she belongs.”

Catmose College is an oversubscribed and successful 11-16 Academy, situated in Oakham, in the heart of Rutland. The College is rated Outstanding by Ofsted (February 2012) and is the first choice for many parents looking for a traditional academic experience for their child. Stuart Williams, Principal, comments, “Our aim is to ensure every student achieves academic excellence whilst developing the wider skills necessary to be the best in their chosen field. We develop this in a number of ways. Our ethos is one in which students can enjoy a calm, purposeful and happy learning environment, based on mutual respect and trust. Students have access to our state of the art facilities from early morning to late afternoon and are expected to take responsibility for their own learning.” Students are encouraged to develop wider skills through the Electives programme which offers over one-hundred courses based around sport, creativity, music and drama. Students can develop their equestrian skills, learn Latin or try water-sports and ice skating. The College expects students to take positions of responsibility at many levels including Head Boy and Head Girl, Student Council, Subject Ambassadors, House leaders and by volunteering to work within the local community. The College House system aims to promote friendly competition through a diverse programme of sporting and academic competition. “We have high expectations of our students and they have high expectations of us. We believe success is its own reward and empower students to take pleasure from each of their achievements for its own sake.”

– even if it is only a “well done” mentioned in passing when a boy or girl has written a particularly good essay or done well in a test. Morality and school values are set by older students in house and around the school so the sense of family and community is strong. Richard recognises that peers are also an important influence but he believes that the tone of the school is set by adults and the senior pupils who, fundamentally, lead by example. “Everyone wants to be recognised and that quiet word in house after a day’s lessons, that is important. Noticing what an individual has done is particularly empowering, especially in boys who need belief in them to be shown.”

hilst nationally there is a growing picture of disruption and discontent in the classroom, we are fortunate to find ourselves surrounded by schools with strong leaders and sound ethos that seem to be bucking the trend. So, what methods are they using to maintain the equilibrium and create an environment where students can flourish?

Brooke Priory School Elizabeth Bell, Headmistress, at Brooke Priory School in Oakham, is firm in her belief that, “Children thrive when expectations are high, boundaries are clear, praise is abundant and rewards plentiful.” Elizabeth feels strongly that pupils should be included in decisions that affect them and the democratically elected School Council at Brooke Priory takes its role very seriously. Items are fully debated by class representatives who disseminate information to their peer groups. Everyone has the opportunity to be involved, consensus is reached and the process generates mutual respect and support. The House system gives pupils the opportunity to contribute towards a common goal and the end of term cup which is awarded to the House with the most points is hotly contended. House points are given for a great many reasons, from academic achievement to good manners and thoughtfulness. • Contact: Tel: 01572 724778, www.brooke.rutland.sch.uk

Copthill School “One of the greatest joys of working in a primary school is the general enthusiasm and motivation of all children. What teenagers or adults may consider to be a chore is very likely to be a reward for younger children! I remember in my early teaching days making a child sweep a path because they had been throwing soil onto it – only to find a whole queue of eager volunteers wanting to do the job next time! The moral of the story is that knowing the individual is the key to every aspect of their education. Knowing the child helps teachers to tailor the education to their specific needs. Setting achievable educational targets for each child and providing suitable rewards is vital. At Copthill one of our rewards involves children being able to cook their own lunch in the woods!” • Contact: Tel: 01780 757506, www.copthill.com

Pitsford School Pitsford School is a small, friendly school set in 26 acres of beautiful parklands. “As a small school our aims are simple - to give every opportunity to each child to reach their full potential – in the class room,

on the sports field or even on stage! Being a small school makes it possible to know each child individually, develop their strengths, improve their weaknesses, teach them new skills and discover new talents,” explains Lyn Rich, marketing manager. Key Stage 1 pupils at Pitsford School are awarded stickers for good behaviour but their main incentive to behave is ‘Golden Time’. Key Stage 2 pupils are given credits for good academic work, white credits for kindness and a star on the ‘Star Board’ for achievements ‘above and beyond’ – this includes achievements outside of school activities, as well as achievements in school. Senior pupils are regularly rewarded for good work. When a Merit is awarded for excellent work it is logged on the School’s ‘markbook’ system alongside reports and any examination results. Says Lyn, “Our aim is simply to ensure we give them the best opportunity to succeed and prepare them for their next step – whether that be at University, a gap year or entering into the world of work.” • Contact: Tel: 01604 880306 www.ngs-school.com

Bringing out the best in girls at Leicester High School Girls are free to be themselves at Leicester High. Says Julia Burnes, headmistress: “Our motto is Giving Girls Education, Confidence, Opportunity. They discover their potential, build their confidence and really believe that there is nothing they cannot do. The positive impact of an all-girls education lasts for life”. Leicester High has its own unique style - there is a great work ethos and they encourage individuality. It is an academic school but not at the expense of a broad and balanced educational experience .The range of visits, trips, speakers and conferences is staggering. “We believe in quality and breadth within a traditional curriculum”, declares Julia. “The three sciences are taught separately from Year 7 and three languages are offered at International GCSE, because we strongly believe that the quality of education is the start to success in life.” Leicester High is not a large school so voices are always heard, opinions are listened to and self-belief is built. “As well as encouraging them to be risk-takers and striving to be the best they can be, we also teach them to be self-reliant and aware of others. Learning to be a decent person with integrity is something we strive to teach here. One parent once said, ‘You would know a girl from Leicester High as soon as she walks into a room’, which is great, as we want the girls to make an impression in life!” • To discover more attend the Open Day on 13 October 9.30am12.30pm, or visit the new website go to: www.leicesterhigh.co.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING SEPTEMBER 2012

Money Saving Tips for Your Next Ski Holiday

Buy one get one free on lift passes. Selected resorts such as Zermatt, Saas Fee and Verbier are offering these great deals when you book your full package deal (including flights transfers and accommodation). This saving amounts to around £140.00 pp but this deal is for a limited time period only. Go all inclusive. Deals including flights, transfers, all meals, unlimited drinks, tuition, children’s clubs and lift passes are available from just £839.00 pp. Pick your dates wisely. The best dates for the cheapest prices will be the weeks of 15 December, 12/19 January, 17/24 March and 13 April. If you need to keep costs down then forget the peak periods of Christmas, New Year and half term, February, and Easter. Buy ski clothing, equipment, and accessories now. You will see reduced prices in shops such as www.snowandrock.co.uk with discounts as much as 50%. Now is the time to stock up on ski socks, base layers, jackets, and ski pants. Choose your resort in accordance with your ski ability and not your aspirations. Too often first time skiers demand to go to resorts such as Val d’Isere and St Anton because they have been advised to go there by friends. If you ski just one week a year then resorts like La Rosiere, Obergurgl, Saas Fee will be fine for 6 days skiing; not only will you save money but you will have a better time too with slopes more suited to your standard. Buy your ski helmet rather than hiring. The ski helmet hire business must have the largest percentage mark up in the Alps. You can buy helmets from just £19.95 from a wide selection of sites across the internet and yet this is the price that many hire shops will charge for a week long hire in the Alps. Be more flexible on your departure airport. If you are determined to fly from East Midlands or Birmingham this will restrict your options severely. Many smaller and better priced tour operators only have the capacity to fly from one airport, often Gatwick. 8 Insurance. Do not rely on free policies offered by banks unless you know 100% you are properly covered. Buy an annual policy that will cover you for summer holidays and short breaks too. Ski specialists like Fogg insurance are the best people to get rates from (www. fogginsure.co.uk). • For more information contact: Nick Edwards, Snow Finders www.snowfinders.co.uk, Tel: 01858 466888

Sample thirst quenching ciders and beers, nibble on pork pies and cheeses and savour organic freshly cooked sausages and Dexter old spot burgers. Rutland Day is on the same site as the Food Festival, and is a great day for everyone of all ages to enjoy. The Rutland Food Ambassador, Sean Hope from The Olive Branch, will be hosting the cookery demonstration stage, which will feature some of our most talented local chefs, including; Brian Baker from The Marquess of Exeter in Lyddington, James Goss from The King’s Arms Inn, Wing, Dameon Clarke from The Wicked Witch, Ryhall, Julian Carter from Hambleton Bakery, Chris Harrison from The Red Lion, Stathern Also exhibiting are Riverford Organic Vegetables, Grasmere Farm, Northfield Farm, Brocklebys, The Stamford Cheese Cellar, Rutland Preserves, The Gourmet Spice Company, The Melton Cheeseboard and most importantly The Grainstore Brewery …as well as others Greetham Valley will again be exporting the taste of the fabulous Greetham Valley Black Rock Grill with samples of hot steak including the popular, spicy, ‘Cajun one’ Says Dee, “The concept of grilling your own juicy steak at your table on a hot volcanic rock is clearly appealing to many – theatre in the dining room! Do call at the Greetham Valley stand and while enjoying your free steak sample, why not take a look at all the events we have on at Greetham Valley for this year?”

What does the Rutland Food and Drink Festival and being a foodie in Rutland mean to our newest addition Leo Sugden from Otters Deli on Mill Street? “It is surprising that the smallest county can offer the foodie such a fabulous choice of quality products and excellent places to eat. It certainly attracts people from out of the county too – we often have people coming from some distance to the shop who can’t get a specific item other than London. We are delighted to be at the Festival as it gives us great opportunity to showcase some of the products we sell to local people and visitors who may not have had the chance to visit our shop on Mill Street in Oakham.” Why Dameon Clarke, Head Chef at The Wicked Witch, Ryhall remains in Rutland: “You can immediately sense passion when you enter The Wicked Witch, a passion for style, innovation and quirkiness. My menu reflects all of these things and my dedication to provide an “experience” no matter what our diners order will never weaken. Sourcing the best local produce and then putting sheer love into each dish I create, I feel is the only way to serve food!”

Recycle your Unloved Jewellery and Create a New Favourite… “Do you have any old silver, gold or platinum jewellery you no longer love? Ruth Wood is a jeweller and silversmith who is building quite a reputation with her innovative design using exquisite gemstones in unusual settings. Ruth’s stunning pieces are much in demand and have been featured on the pages of national magazines including GQ and Vogue. “If you have a piece of gold or silver you no longer wear, I am able to trade in your old metal towards a commission for a new piece of jewellery. The same applies to a favourite gemstone, sapphire or diamond you would like reusing set in a different style.” If you have a yearning to try jewellery making then Ruth’s ‘Ring in a Day’ workshop is for you. You will learn how to make a ring from a flat piece of silver with tuition in several metalworking techniques. Small numbers guaranteed, the workshop costs £78 including the silver for your ring. Orangehouse Selected for National Award Energy prices seem to be continually rising and many people are looking at other energy sources to reduce their costs and carbon emissions. Local company Orangehouse Renewables have been working hard helping homes and businesses achieve these aims. This effort has been recognised through being shortlisted for the prestigious national Renewable Energy Awards. The Stamfordbased company specialise in supplying heat pump systems. Heat pumps collect energy from the air or ground to provide efficient heating and hot water for new or existing buildings. Orangehouse gained the important Government-backed Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) standard earlier this year. This means systems comply with safety and installation standards; will perform efficiently for years to come and give the customer confidence in their investment. It also allows Orangehouse clients to qualify for the attractive financial incentives available for homes and businesses. Alex Driver said, “We’re all really proud to have been shortlisted and are looking forward to the awards ceremony this month.” For further information call Tel: 01780 490095 or visit www.orangehouse.co.uk

Nordic Style Essentially Nordic is a new, Rutland based, business whose purpose is to provide beautiful, distinctive and useful products to brighten up your home . Pippa and Louise were bored with the same predictable, mass produced home-wares offered on the high street so decided to start up their own business sourcing interior products that are desirable and affordable, yet distinctive. Says Pippa, “We are passionate about Scandinavian design, which can be defined as having timeless simplicity, elegance and beauty, yet, at the same time, retain functionality. Design is deeply rooted in the Nordic lifestyle – lighting up their homes in the long, dark winter months. We sell high quality, stylish, vintage glassware. Our range includes vases, serving bowls and platters, glasses, decanters and candleholders mainly from the 60s, 70s and 80s era. They are beautiful pieces which have stood the test of time and still look stunning in a contemporary interior. Brands include well-known names such as Holmegaard, Riihimaki and Iittala. To mix with and complement these pieces we are selecting new Scandinavian designs in glass and ceramics to add to the home. In addition we have a wonderful range of contemporary table linen using uplifting Scandinavian fabric designs inspired by nature. These add another dimension to your dining experience or can transform your living space.” Pippa and Louise continually source their wares from local fairs and exhibitions where they hand pick interesting new designs to supplement their carefully selected vintage glassware which they have lovingly collected over the past few years. • To see their products or to commission Pippa or Louise Tel: 0771 2837645 or 07971 158606. Steffans new premises in Market Harborough Steffans has moved to glorious new premises across the road from its old store in Market Harborough

T

he new store has just about the best location in town, with shop front in three directions and visible from every angle. And the team has spared no money in creating a truly glamorous store, with an investment of over £100,000 to create this sparkling new place. Wes Suter, the son of the founder Steffan and the manager of the new store, explained that it had been their ambition to secure the site for many years. “When I begun in the family business a decade ago,” he told us “I started in the old Market Harborough store across the way, learning about the business at the grass roots level. I used to look across the road longingly at this site, which was another jewellers, and think how perfect that could be. The opportunity came up more than two years ago, when the business went into receivership, but it took us a while to obtain the lease and then get planning permission for the building, which is Grade II listed. “Our goal has been to create the best shopping environment in Market Harborough bar none and we hope that we have achieved

46

this. It has been a labour of love for us.” The biggest external change has been a second entrance and a window on the east side of the store, where the greatest footfall is. This required sensitive working with the planners and everything had to be created in the right style. The result is fabulous, a really bright and airy store, arranged as shops within shops, displaying a range of desirable brands. The display windows are all double-sided to maximise the display space. Steffans was one of the very first businesses in the region to adopt branded furniture jewellery, and this has come to full fruition in the Market Harborough store. “We have chosen brands that are desirable and affordable and that we know from our experience in the Northampton store are really desirable for our shoppers. Jewellery is getting closer and closer to fashion and our brand selection reflects this.” Jeweller brands include Pandora, Thomas Sabo, Links, Hot Diamonds, Georg Jenson and Carat. Watch brands include Skagen, Michael Kors, Toy and Swatch.
