Ronald C. Berman Tax Law Madison, Wisconsin Professionally, Ron Berman splits his time between tax law and estate planning, with a sub-specialty in planning for business succession and additional experience with business transactions and employee benefits law. Berman passed his CPA exam in 1971 while going to law school and worked as a CPA and partner in a national accounting firm for many years before moving into full-time legal work. When he went into law, he brought his clients with him. “I’ve had many clients in excess of the 20 years I’ve had in law,” he says. “Some go back to the periods when I was with the accounting firm, so I’ve had some for 25 to 40 years.” Berman has similarly been dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America for much of his life and says that one of his greatest honors, other than being fortunate to have his family, is that he and his son both earned the rank of Eagle Scout. “I recently put together a Court of Honor for the troop that I started 38 years ago and I will be going to the Council’s annual dinner, so I’m still involved at both the unit level and the council level,” says Berman. “I like to say in my work time that I’m trying to not necessarily pay the government as much as the government might want to get. But, during my off hours, I’m trying to help out with the long-term future of our country.” One does not need to search far to find another indication of the tenacity, dedication, and hard work that are cornerstones of Berman’s achievements: In 2003, he was the honored with the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants (WICPA) Spirit Award in recognition of his leadership for more than two decades on the Federal Taxation Committee. He continues to serve today—going 30 years strong— as a liaison between the WICPA Federal Taxation Committee and the IRS, having frequent contact with representatives of the federal tax agency to discuss how the IRS does things and how the WICPA wants to improve the way they are done.
