sk anyone who knows Gretchen Myers and they will all say the same thing: that she’s an attorney who is in it for the right reasons. From her hard-earned vantage point as one of the St. Louis area’s top plaintiffs’ lawyers, Myers is driven by a true passion for justice that was born—and nurtured—from watching her father, a “true Atticus Finch,” she says, advocate for his own clients. “I knew from the fifth grade that I wanted to be a lawyer and do the work he did, to help people,” says Myers, who handles virtually all manner of personal injury cases but is perhaps best known for her work in helping clients grievously injured or killed in accidents involving tractor trailers. “I often tell my clients that what I do is a cause for me; it’s not a business. There are cases that I will work on for five years and never receive any fees until we either go to trial or settle. But they are risks worth taking because I’m helping people get to the other side, as close to whole as they could be given that their lives are permanently altered.” Myers, a solo practitioner who began her career trying serious medical negligence cases, is taking on some formidable opponents in the process, from behemoth automobile manufacturers and Fortune 500 corporations to international trucking corporations. But regardless of the entity she’s up against, Myers—who’s no stranger to the courtroom, with the multi-million dollar verdicts to prove it—prepares each case as if going to trial is an inevitability. And when she does end up in the courtroom? Defense attorneys know what they’re up against. “One thing jurors certainly get when I try a case is that I believe 100 percent in my client,” says Myers, who, among many other associations and memberships, serves on the Association of Plaintiff Interstate Trucking Lawyers of America’s National Advisory Board and a past president of the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys. “For my clients, it means they finally believe justice is possible. It’s an incredible feeling."
