Word from The President The days where a trip to the capital was the adventure of a lifetime to most people, foreign languages seemed a mystery and spices came from fairytale countries far, far away, are over. Though the physical distances are the same, they no longer have the same value due to human innovations. Today, one could probably reach any spot on the world map within 24h by plane, and information is sent from the other side of the globe every second over the internet. But the breaking down of physical barriers calls for a lot of other obstacles to be overcome in order to allow the almost unlimited opportunities of this technological development to blossom for real. In BEST we are emphasizing the need for international focus and open-mindedness towards all people and ways of living in today’s global society. By making and hosting courses that are open to students from all member universities, we want to give everybody a chance to go abroad, experience other cultures and traditions, meet new people, improve technical skills as well as soft skills, but above all have a fantastic time. Because in BEST, we believe that fun and friendship are key principles in understanding the world of today. In the local BEST group of Copenhagen, LBG Copenhagen, it has been a tradition to host so-called Summer Courses each year, where students from all over Europe are invited to come to Denmark. This has been going on ever since 2004, and the summer of 2009 was no exception. Measured on applications, we organized the 4th most popular course in the BEST world, where 25 international students in the end came to Copenhagen to learn about wind energy and experience the BEST spirit. It was a huge success, academic as well as organizational, and the experiences from last summer are used to make this summer’s course on hydrogen and electric vehicles even better. As BEST is a huge organization, internal events are needed to make the organization work smoothly. One of these events, the regional meeting of the Nordic region, was hosted by LBG Copenhagen in the spring of 2009, where close to one hundred BEST members from Scandinavia as well as the international groups participated. The event has afterwards been referred to as unforgettable and one of the greatest regional meetings, which underlines LBG Copenhagen’s position as one of the leading BEST groups in the Nordic region. Last autumn, LBG Copenhagen also arranged a Local Engineering Competition in cooperation with Maersk and Maersk FPSO. 80 DTU students divided into 20 teams competed in two competitions; team design and case study. A winner was found in each competition, and these teams will present DTU in the BEST Regional Engineering Competition, nordBEC, another great event that will be organized by LBG Copenhagen in spring 2010. Here, the winning teams from eight Scandinavian Universities will be fighting for seats in the European finals in Cluj, Rumania, this autumn. From time to time, it happens to our members that people ask: why put all this work into BEST, a volunteer organization? Well, the easy answer is the thing we call ‘BEST spririt’. It is something that cannot be neither explained nor described, it can only be experienced. The BEST spirit is the driving force of all our activities, and it runs through the entire organization. And from all of us who has felt this, we can only say: try it, you won’t regret it! Nonetheless, one cannot build a house on good intensions only, and in BEST we are not only able to carry out our tasks and hosting our events thanks to motivated members only, but also due to the backing from DTU and our company sponsors. We want to thank you sincerely for your support, and we hope to continue our cooperation in 2010 to make it another successful year.

Christoffer Lythcke Jørgensen President, BEST Copenhagen

Word from the Rector

04

Twenty years of existence - and now covering more than 82 universities - is a great achievement for a non-profit and non-political organization for students of science and technology. Founded in the very heart of Europe and driven by the dream of young people that science and technology shall unite the world, BEST has become a platform for international encounters between technology students. In BEST, student interaction takes place through scientific seminars and excursions quite as often as in cyberspace. The BEST seminar participants learn to communicate across boundaries and they establish cross-cultural networks of lasting personal and professional significance while promoting scientific progress and building up their technological skills and competences. 2009 being no exception and with a high-light being BEST’s Summer Course on Wind Energy, whereby BEST contributed - not only to the overall Danish efforts promoting the United Nations Climate Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen - but even more importantly - supported DTU’s strategy of sustainability as part of its contributions to society. As one of Europe’s top technical universities, DTU believes that internationalization is both a natural component of and a precondition for excellence in technical development. Through our internationally acknowledged research, through student exchange with top universities worldwide, and through our participation in alliances with leading science centres and industry, DTU embodies the vision that cross-cultural respect and understanding contributes to the use of technology for social benefit – a vision shared by BEST students. Lars Pallesen, Rector of DTU

16 days in Estonia - where the sun never sets

I arrived in Tallinn, hoping that one of the people from the BEST-group in Tallinn would pick me up as they had written in the e-mails. I had no expectation, did not know what to expect about anything from the course. From the first moment everyone was so friendly, we were 20 participants from 17 different countries in Europe. It was so easy to get to know people, because everyone was so open minded and keen on to have as much fun together as possible. After the welcome party and the first day, it felt like you had known everyone for a long time, it was just wonderful! On this course “ECObob - Ecological Beauty of Buildings”, it was required for the participant to have a basic knowledge for architecture or environment, so the teachers had a certain level to teach from. During the first week we had a lot of interesting lectures about energetic aspect of buildings to design of urban environment. This was combined with group work at the university in Tallinn, and input from several different teachers and people from companies. We went to company visit and went to watch buildings inspired by the ecological and recycling perspectives in mind, it was also interesting for the companies and teachers to meet students of technology from all over Europe and discuss what might be the future. Every day when the lectures ended, there were always a lot of social activities arranged by the BEST group – actually most party – all night, every night and people was always motivated :D ! The minor settle of the sun in the summer, make the day in Estonian extra long, so it actually did not feel like it was night at all! One party there always should be, is the international evening! Everyone gets to represent their country with traditional food and drink and for example their own special song, dance etc. People are proud to show off their country and it is a fun way to make a quick travel with senses through Europe. Additionally, there are arranged a lot of theme parties, pub-crawling and city rally. In the last week, we went on a two day work camp to a big Estonian forest, to help a family building their own ecological straw bale house. This was to combine all our lectures and the visits to ecological societies.

06

I knew nothing about Estonia, I knew nothing about BEST. I just knew that the topic of the course interested me and I was ready to use a couple of weeks of my holiday to experience something completely different than normal!

We helped put up the foundation of the house, on which we put the straw bales covered with plaster made by ourselves. The plaster was mixed from clay, stone, small straws and even horse shit with our bare feet and hands. It was hard work, but it was fun and a nice way to work practical with the topic. During the work shop we lived primitive; sleeping in a big tent, eating outside, showering in a cold river – nice moments in front of the camp fire. Estonia is a beautiful country, full of big green forests with small lakes spread all over – we did several stop during bus rides to make a quick swim. Estonians love saunas. Estonians are friendly and happy people, and eager to show that they are not a part of Russia anymore, but Europe. Every participant on the course came from a country where English were not their first language, so the understanding of the difficulties with expression or lack of words led just out to a smile among people followed by other ways to talk to each other, such as “body language”. I signed up for a BEST-course in Estonia at the internet – just a motivation letter from getting to the course. The first step in a foreign country, where you actually do not know what will happen the next couple of weeks, combined with the eager of excitement to meet a lot of new people and to make a lot of new friends all over Europe – it is just awesome, indescribable – it has to be experienced!

Gone With the Wind - get Blown by the Power! As the tradition demands, the summer of 2009 was marked by the BEST Copenhagen’s annual summer course. It involved students from 19 different countries including Mexico and all parts of Europe. The planning and preparation for this course started early, at the end of year 2008. We wanted to do an amazing event that would leave unforgettable memories for the participating students. After a lot of hard work devoted to finding appropriate academic content, fund raising, planning the social part, we managed to create an event that got fourth place in the application ranking among 83 BEST groups. Thus once again we followed the BEST Copenhagen tradition of being in the leading 5 most preferred destinations for a summer course, with more than 470 applications. Not only we promised a great event, but we managed to provide an “awesome” course, according to the participants’ feedback. First step was choosing a topic for the academic part of the course, that is both actual and well developed in Denmark. The answer was wind energy, which is not only a major producer of electricity in Denmark, but also the Danish company Vestas is one of the world leaders in developing the technology. The whole world is looking towards a greener future and the wind turbine technology is one of the few technologies holding the key to the eco-friendly future. Furthermore, it covers broad spectrum of technical topics that attracts specialists from many different fields (mechanical engineers, electric engineers, etc.). As a leading technical university, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has highly qualified professors and facilities in this area. Robert Jensen (DTU Physics) taught the participants basic wind turbine technology and had the students design and experiment with their own wind turbine blades in a wind tunnel. Qingfeng Li (DTU Associate Professor) gave lectures on means of storing energy generated from wind and in particular - Hydrogen. Hans Chr Soerensen (M.Sc. Ph.D., CEO of SPOK Consult) enlarged the students knowledge with two important topics - Environmental impacts of offshore wind farms and Grid integration of electricity of offshore wind parks.

We managed to create an event that ranked 4th place among 83 Universities!

08 To balance the pure theoretical part of the course with practical experiences, Vestas provided the students with field trip to one of their factories in Nakskov, where they saw the stages of manufacturing wind turbine blades. Assisted by Hans Chr Soerensen and the Danish Association of Wind Turbine Owners (Danmarks Vindmølleforening) the students were given a boat trip around an offshore windfarm and the incredible opportunity to climb on a land wind turbine. This left all the students participating in the summer course with incredible memories and stories to tell.

A supreme experience. One that you definitely should participate in, in order to experience a BEST course and feel the BEST spirit!”

The thing that makes BEST courses very attractive and popular is that they are not regular academic courses. They are a mixture of an academic content and social activities. Except introduced with an intriguing technical topic, the students get acquainted with many different cultures as they get to know each other and create friendships that cross borders, nationalities and races. From an organizers perspective it is amazing to see how so many different people are getting to know each other, bonding and keeping the friendship fire even after the end of the course. As an important part of the social activities, the participants get introduced to the Danish traditions, culture and all aspects of the Danish lifestyle, and we are delighted to see that many have already planned to visit us again!

... and the incredible opportunity to climb on a land wind turbine!”

As a main organizer of the BEST Copenhagen 2009 summer course I can say that it was not easy at all creating such an event. I would be probably never able to do it without the help of the members of Copenhagen BEST group including the other main organizer – Birgit Haastrup and our four lovely co-organizers. After many sleepless nights it was great to see the outcome of our efforts – an amazing and exciting two-week event, full of happy faces and blooming friendships. This course was a great opportunity for some companies to reach young bright engineering student coming not only from all over Europe but the world. Vestas provided them with a company visit, Maersk presented their MITAS after-graduate program, DTU excited them with their facilities and professionals. The young open minded students are like rough diamonds that need shaping and BEST courses offer this possibility by motivating them and displaying their numerous options in the international professional environment.

It was really difficult to pack and leave my new friends to go back home.” Hristo Valev Main Organicer SummerCourse’09

The Motivation Letter! A motivation letter is your chance to convice the organisers that they should choose exactly you instead of another student. It's important to dedicate some time to write it as sometimes there are over 400 applicants to only 25 seats! Ideas to include:

• • • • • • •

Age and gender Hobbies / Interests Something special from your home country / city? Why exactly this course? Yours skills in the field? Your enthusiasm for learning about other cultures and meeting new people Any special reason why to choose precisely YOU?

The organizers might ask some (sometimes silly) questions. If you don't know the answer, don’t worry - it's not an exam. In general, while writing the motivation letter, keep in mind that the people in the other side are studens just like you and me. You're not writing to professors or companys, so don't send your C.V! - Just try to be creative and write a letter that you yourself would like to read!

[Some crazy exemples you might get inspiration from] Once upon a time in a country far north from where you are reading this now, in a country where beer steam like the greatest river, where the Vikings once ruled and where the blond giants lived. In this country lived a sad fairy princess with purple rainbow hair. She was not like other fairy princesses, you perhaps have heard about before, no this one was different. She dreamed about travelling, meeting other cultures, people and creatures, but most of all she wanted adventures. The fairy princess knew that since she was a princess she had to get a disguise, so the fairy princess decided to cover her purple rainbow hair so she wouldn’t get so much attention by it, instead the attention she wanted should come from her open and smiling personality. The fairy princess, now with blond hair instead of purple rainbow, realized that a fairy name could only be said by magic creatures, so the princess changed her fairy princess name into a normal name. Now her name is Marie and she is a student at the Technical University of Denmark. She studies Design and Innovation Engineering, since she is fascinated by creating a product and following the design process from start to production. She dreams of joining your course, as she deeply believes she will get a better understanding for materials, and at the same spot be able to perform one of her favorite things, parting! Since the princess knew she loved to party and have fun, she had to choose an age where most people party, so her human age is 22 years old, but that’s only around 150 in fairy years, which is quite young for a fairy (…) - Marie Rasmussen

Greetings, human. I am an alien. I do not look like the aliens from your movies?. In fact, I'm just like you. Except that, instead of a heart, I have a strawberry. I come from an extremely advanced civilization in the Andromeda Nebula. In fact, we are so advanced that we don't need sleep. We have robots that sleep for us. My planet is completely flat so I was sent to Denmark by my Overlords to find out about your wind harnessing techniques. Although they are probably primitive compared to our own, a different point of view is always welcome. Even if it comes from talking chimps. Unfortunately, our extremely advanced technology also has its drawbacks. I arrived on Earth much sooner than I expected. During the Kalmar War, to be precise. As a result, I have been waiting for this course for the past 400 years. I have survived wars and famines and Katy Perry. Please accept me. Otherwise I will be sad! (...) - Dimitrios

DTU Engineering Competition In fall 2009 the engineering skills of 80 DTU students were put to the test, as BEST Copenhagen hosted two days of competitions. The topic was so called FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) vessels - a field of particular interest of our sponsor Maersk. Young people from all fields of study and of different nationalities, competed in teams of four, in what was to be a challenge in creativity, problem solving and team work - and of course a fun day with fellow students.

Team Design On the first competition day 10 teams were challenged to design the best small scale FPSO using only materials such as a plastic bottle, paper clips and a litre of milk. Rough weather conditions at sea, were simulated, in order to test the models.

Apart from great prizes - a iPod Nano and Acer NoteBooks - the winning team of each competition qualified for the Nordic BEST Engineering Competition, nordBEC. They will compete against teams from all nordic contries, and hopefully qualify for the European final!

16

“

It was extremely motivating to work with a problem which is real and relevant. That made the entire competition much more exciting! - Kristian, participant

Case Study In the second competition day another 10 teams were asked to find smart new ways of lifting and moving heavy weights on a FPSO - a tough nut to crack for the engineers of the industry. The solution should not be built, but only presented. After a nice hot meal, the teams presented their solutions. Employees from Maersk and DTU functioned as judging panel. During the competitions they mingled with the teams, offering professional advice. The winners will represent DTU at nordBEC - the Nordic stage of the worldwide competition. BEST Copenhagen is also hosting nordBEC, and we are looking forward to the opportunity of developing our skills in a fun way - just as these competitions have been.

Winners of CaseStudy

The winners of the Team Design were IT students, with no specific knowledge of naval architecture. This fitted perfectly with the intention of the competitions: To apply creative problem solving in general, rather than specialized theoretical knowledge.

nordBEC Live, learn, make friends, travel, have fun, be serious, think, present yourself, sell your ideas, make rules, bend rules, learn how to win, learn to be a good loser,... Meaning of life? Maybe, but if not, it is definitely a good description of what is BEST and its youngest child nordBEC. This abbreviation hides the Nordic BEST Engineering Competition which is going to take place for the first time in region history in Copenhagen between 27th and 31st of March 2010. 60 students representing 8 Nordic Universities of Technology will visit Copenhagen to compete, feel international atmosphere, improve their technical skills and learn about other cultures. For each of them winning their Local BEST Engineering Competitions (LECs) at their home universities was the passport allowing them to come here and do their best to win fabulous prizes and get a free ticket to next stage of the competition. LECs are only the beginning. NordBEC is just the second step. The serious challenge starts right after. Eight lucky winners from nordBEC are automatically invited to European BEST Engineering Competition (EBEC), which this year will take place in Cluj-Napoca in Romania, from 31st of July to 10th of August 2010. Nordic winning teams are going to compete with students from all over the Europe to become the best of the best.

“

60 students representing 8 Nordic Universities of Technology will visit Copenhagen to compete, feel international atmosphere, improve their technical skills and learn about other cultures.

NordBEC (as well as EBEC) is something more that a student engineering contest. Include organizers and special guests from all over the Nordic Kingdom and you will reach the magical number of 100 students at the same place, at the same time. A real melting pot containing plenty of different ideas coming for various places, study lines, countries, backgrounds and have different languages and personalities. Cultural diversity that is hard to be created in other conditions.

The competition is similar to the local levels. It is divided into two completely different categories – Team Design and Case Study. Taking into account infinite number of ideas originated in the BESTies heads, the proposed tasks can surprise even organizers. Mixture of technical skills with deeply hidden ideas from the forgotten parts of our juvenile imagination could be a perfect way to win the first prize in this Team Design. Compete and have fun at the same time? Welcome to BEST and its nordBEC. On the other hand, the other participants have to deal with the problems of the serious and complex real engineering life. Case Study provided by Maersk demands from students to develop theoretical solution of the problem that sometimes overwhelms even experienced engineers. Fresh and innovative points of view resulting in amazing and untypical ideas are key features that can amuse company judges and improve the winning chances. The participant schedule is filled with more than only competition tasks. Personal trainings and various social activities won’t let them get bored even for a second. Organizers won’t miss the chance to show participants every worth seeing part of our beautiful Copenhagen during the City Rally. While they will repay this hospitality by presenting their own countries on the last night during the famous BEST International Evening. When you are reading these words the competition has not even taken place yet but it has already become legendary among all Nordic technical universities. For most of you it is too late to take part this Karen Holmegaard year, but do not miss your chance to challenge students during the next year LECs and hopefully DTU student, other and now next nordBEC. We are going to be there, member what about you? a BEST
