KOHLMOOS FAMILY NEWSLETTER Volume 14

December 2013, Bend, Oregon 97702

Merry Christmas from the Kohlmoos family . . . Season’s Greetings! Yep, the cast is the same. It’s just that the younger participants are even less co-operative, and for sure the ghostwriter is getting older! We’ve tried to get this done early, and it didn’t happen. We’ll continue with our theme of keeping things light and vague (just like us!). We’ve also tried to repeat the same old tired jokes. Disclaimer--individual characters have not selected their own photos for inclusion in this newsletter; said photos did, however, receive one half the parental seal of approval.

CASSIDY KOHLMOOS… AGE 25… ICE QUEEN Still “Endless Winter” Yeah, I know, I clean up pretty well. That’s me in Australia (at left), wearing a vintage chapeau and celebrating the Melbourne Cup. I’ve had another great year . . . a continuation of the “endless winter.” In June, I jetted off to Australia again (I have dual citizenship). I spent the Australian winter teaching snowboarding in Falls Creek (a resort in the Australian Alps) and improving my “strayne”. When the season ended, I headed to Adelaide for some R and R and a bit of sun; then took the train across Australia to Perth, where I hooked up with mom and visited my Nanna. I’m back in Tahoe now for yet another winter (my seventh consecutive) . . . working on skis, coaching the Far West race team at Northstar. Feliz Navidad!

CODY KOHLMOOS… AGE 23… THE REAL WORLD (ALMOST) “Oh, what a year, what a year (again)!” My year started out on a bright note with New Years in San Francisco with my girlfriend and one of my best friends from college. After graduating last December, I had decided this was the year for me to ski as much as possible (I hadn’t really been able to with the tennis program at U of M), and that Tahoe was a good option. I got a job working at a café on the lake, and spent the first few months of the year skiing (a lot) and working (a little). Because of the lack of snowfall, spring came early. I really enjoyed this, as I was able to break out the bike and start working on my tennis game. I then went back to Missoula for my official graduation ceremony in May (picture to the left), and then back down to Tahoe for the summer. I taught tennis at Northstar, and generally enjoyed the Tahoe outdoors. Then I got a little wacky . . . and decided to start training for a marathon (I’ll come back to that later). Come September, I zipped back to Missoula to visit my girlfriend, Sophie, and play in a tennis proam event. The brief visit ended up lasting a month; as I was unable to leave my Missoula playground. Finally back in Tahoe, I knew it was time to get to work, so I got a job at the Squaw Valley Lodge, and continued training for my maiden marathon. As for the marathon itself--the CIM in Sacramento--I was able to complete it in a time of 3:54:04, barely breaking my target time of 4 hours (and finishing with a smile—at right) I can still walk, and now it’s back to the “grind” of work and skiing, while I save up for a trip to Eastern Europe with my roommate, Ethan, in the spring. Work hard, play harder! Happy holidays!

JOHN KOHLMOOS… AGE 65

“Ca Plane Pour Moi” That’s me, pretending to be tough during a recent cold spell (try -15) at Mt. Bachelor. A really nice morning of storm riding! Me again—another self-aggrandizing heroic pose . . . this time, pretending to be cyclist. In September, we did an amazing “self guided” tour in France; a week riding “Historic Dordogne” followed by week pedaling through the “Vineyards Bordeaux” to the coast. Plenty of Bordeaux red and “confit de canard.” Despite numerous “a gauche ou a droite” discussions, the marriage survived as well!

We managed quite well (www.bestbendhomes.com) again with our business, as Bend’s difficult real estate market showed definitive signs of recovery. And, as always, I tried to “play” a little bit too—plenty of early morning “board meetings” at Mt. Bachelor, a bit of tennis; in summer, lots of time on the water on a standup board. My clubs and crappy golf game sort of fell by the wayside, replaced by a new carbon road bike and a trusty mountain bike. I even have the spandex shorts! Merry Christmas!!

SANDY KOHLMOOS… 60 AND SORT OF FEELIN’ IT “Happy Christmas” For me, a year of subtle transitions and changing perspectives . . . Despite a relatively healthy lifestyle (red wine doesn’t count!), the telltale signs of starting my 7th decade are obvious. Still, I am delighted to have the ability/luck to travel and explore, and do the things we love to do! I felt like a jet setter in 2013 . . . starting with a wonderful trip to Costa Rica, where we celebrated Ann's (John's sister) 70th birthday. Our bicycle trip in France in September showed we could still do it...travel and ride that is! At the end of October, I traveled back to Perth to visit my mum who has been struggling with her health a bit this year. While in Perth, I also attended my first high school reunion with “girls” I hadn't seen in over 40 years . . . an interesting and fun evening, and great to renew old friendships. Amazingly, Cody officially graduated from college in May, so now we have 2 adult children sort of making their ways in the world...mostly in Tahoe!

MACKIE . . . Age 2 1/2 They still call me “Trouble” What did you think? That they’d use photos of me chasing deer, hiking, or frolicking in the snow? Nah, as you can tell, I’m a little too sophisticated for that. That’s me . . . prepared for a trip into town, and napping on the couch (when John’s not around!) Still, I’m just a dog, and I ‘m happy to be part of this household. I won’t even tell the joke about the talking dog or my favorite baseball player. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! As always, please come and pay us a visit. We’ve got plenty of room and would love to show you Oregon. kohlmoos@bendcable.com
