KOHLMOOS FAMILY BETWEEN CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR NEWSLETTER

Fall on the Deschutes River near Dillon Falls Volume 18

December 2017 Bend, Oregon 97702

Merry Christmas from the Kohlmoos family . . . Season’s Greetings! Well, we got it out . . . barely! But even had to change the title of this pithy piece. More difficult every year . . . distractions like a trip to Mexico (good!), too much business (also pretty good), uncooperative contributors (not so good, but to be expected). As always, we tried to plan ahead, but to no avail. Anyway, here it is, our yearly newsletter . . . we’ve tried to keep it light and loose (like us!), nothing too heavy. We’ve also tried not to repeat the same old tired jokes and clichés. And John has promised not to mention politics. Yearly Disclaimer--individual characters have selected their own photos for inclusion in this newsletter; said photos did not necessarily receive the parental seal of approval.

CASSIDY KOHLMOOS… AGE 29… “My Toes Are Still Cold!” Jackson, Wyoming I had an epic winter in Jackson Hole during the “snowmegeddon” of 2017. I earned my level three certification (sort of a big deal), and enjoyed seemingly endless powder days. At the conclusion of the season, I did a five day float on the pristine Smith River in Northern Montana. I think that’s the second fish I’ve ever caught! My “endless winter” finally came to an end . . . I didn’t go back to Australia in June. After thirteen consecutive winters, and just a bit tired of the cold and wet, I opted to experience a real summer. I spent it landscaping some of the grand residences in Jackson, Wyoming; an interesting change of pace. In November we headed to Punta de Mita (Nayarit State) north of Puerta Vallarta for some warm weather R and R and perhaps a beer or two. I’m now back freezing my ass off again, teaching in Jackson Hole. Feliz Navidad!

CODY KOHLMOOS… AGE 27 … Teaching Pro Missoula . . . Tahoe . . . Scotland . . . Paris . . . Indian Wells I’ve had a great year too . . . most of it still involves tennis. I spent last winter as the assistant pro at the Peak Racket club in Missoula. With summer, I went back to Lake Tahoe, accepting the head pro job at Northstar. In the fall, I headed to Bend for some golf (I lost a lot of money!), then to Missoula to play in a charity Pro-Am, then on to Denver, and finally to Virginia. Sophie (my girlfriend) and I jetted to Scotland for five days, then on to Paris. Without a doubt, the biggest news for me is that in the prettiest city, with the most beautiful girl, for some reason, she said “yes.” We’re pretty excited, and planning a fall wedding. For the winter, I’ve been doing some skiing and commuting to the Vintage Club in Indian Wells, where I’ve been working as a guest pro.

JOHN KOHLMOOS… AGE 69 “In ’69 I was twenty-one . . .” I say each Christmas that it seems the years continue to blur and run together (see the photo at right . . . fully 50 years ago, and, no, the helmet is not leather!). But things are good, and we are fortunate. Businesswise, we managed quite well again, as Bend’s real estate market remained solid. We’ve also been lucky to stay healthy. I continue to play (and brag about it!)—still the early morning “board meetings” at Mt. Bachelor (shooting for the 70/70 combo* this year!), a bit of tennis (thanks for the new racquets, Cody), many afternoons on the water on the Deschutes (and a feeble attempt in the surf at Punta de Mita), and time in the saddle on my bike. I hate to even mention my crummy golf game, but we were lucky to walk a ton of rounds on the magnificent Fazio course at Pronghorn. We continued to travel . . . nothing too exotic . . . a wonderful family reunion in April on the North Shore of Oahu, jaunts to Drakesbad, Tahoe, and the Oregon Coast, and, in November, a hot weather fix in Punta de Mita.

SANDY KOHLMOOS… AGE 64 “Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m sixty-four?” If my husband can get away with using an old photo, so can I. Mine’s really old . . . that’s me in New Zealand in 1974. Check out those chubby cheeks! The photo on the right is me watching the eclipse . . . an adventure this last August. It’s been a dramatic year, in more ways than one! On the home front, the beautiful early January snow turned into nasty ice dams and snow-damaged roofs. But, the conditions at Mt. Bachelor were fantastic; plenty of snow to enjoy until the end of May. We did take a break from winter in April, spending 10 days at a beachfront home of the North Shore of Oahu with my brother and his wife, Dingo and Anna, coming from Australia to celebrate his 60th with (old) family and old friends. Later in spring and again in late summer, we squeezed in a couple of short trips to visit Cass in Jackson – what amazing country! Back in Bend, I really enjoyed the hot summer before the smoke, mainly from wildfires to the north, curtailed our normal outdoor activities! The week before Thanksgiving, Cassidy, Cody and his fiancée, Sophie, were all able to join us for a week of sunshine and warm ocean in Mexico. What a treat! And now it’s almost 2018! Our home is always open – please come visit us in 2018!

MACKIE . . . AGE 6 Years “I’m still just happy to be here!” That’s me, overseeing the opening of presents on Christmas morning at Tahoe. I’m feeling pretty healthy and strong (just like my master!). I’ve made an excellent comeback from my accident a few years ago, and consider myself to be sort of the king of the house. I still love living in Bend (even though it has grown); I adore our neighborhood, and cherish the daily walks with my mistress. I’m not sure her “Fitbit” is correct, but yesterday I think we went something like 19,000 steps. Not sure which of us is the “animal.”

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! As always, please come and pay us a visit. We’ve got plenty of room and would love to show you Oregon. kohlmoos@bendcable.com (541) 312-2524
