CHOOSING YOUR BABY'S FIRST CAR SEAT The questions you need to ask.

When it comes to having a child, there are a million and one things to think about. But choosing the right car seat from the beginning will make life much easier before you bring your little one home. We talk to Luke Burns, General Manager at Cybex UK and Ireland, about the importance of selecting the right car seat.

Why is it important to choose the right car seat from the start?

What Car Seat laws and regulations are in place?

“It’s so important for parents to take their time when choosing a car seat, and ensure that they understand all the key safety features, including how to correctly fit the car seat into their car before purchase.

According to a recent study carried out by researchers at Oregon Health and Science University, 95% of new parents make at least one error when installing their car seat but this one mistake could cause serious injury to your little one if you were in an accident.

A car seat must be used from birth to 12 years (135 cm) therefore it’s important to choose the right car seat in line with your baby’s height and weight, not just age, to ensure maximum safety and comfort for your child.

Shop around, do your research, ask questions, and ensure the car seat you choose is compatible with your car. Yes, it can be overwhelming but make sure you’re confident in your purchase.”

“All manufacturers of car seats have to pass several crash tests. Our car seats have been tested to the highest safety standards, which not only surpass the EU laws set out in R44, and the newer legislation that sits alongside R129, in terms of safety, but they are also independently tested by German consumer organisation, ADAC and Stiftung Warentest, and UK organisation, Which?

The most recent safety regulation to come into force is i-Size – a new European car safety standard which makes travel safer.

The i-Size regulation states that children aged 15 months or younger must travel in a rear-facing car seat as this is regarded as the safest way to travel. i-Size will not replace the current R44 legislation as it operates in parallel with it. In doing so, i-Size offers more sideimpact protection, over and above R44 (which currently does not include side-impact tests).

Many premium brands, including Cybex, have been conducting side-impact tests for years as this is an important aspect of car seat safety.”

How long should a baby be in a car seat?

“When a baby is young, being in a semi-upright position for a considerable length of time may place strain on a baby’s developing spine.

Studies carried out by the Lullaby Trust revealed that when newborn or premature babies were sat in a car seat for 30 minutes, their heart and breathing rate increased, and their blood oxygen levels were lower compared with lying flat in a cot. It is recommended that a baby spends no more than 30 minutes in a car seat, especially in the first four weeks.

It’s also crucial that they have regular breaks from the car seat, are not left in the car seat for more than two hours, and not left in the car seat if they are asleep. "

How do you know if you have fitted your car seat correctly?

“The biggest issue when installing a car seat is misuse. However, nowadays car seats have a number of built-in safety features to ensure maximum protection for children.

Most modern cars will be fitted with ISOFIX which provides additional safety and stability along with the car seat belt. You simply click in the ISOFIX connectors on the base of your seat into the ISOFIX anchor points in the car.

If a car doesn’t have an ISOFIX system, the car seat can be secured with the car seat belt. We recommend reading the instruction manual, watching videos, and speaking to staff in stores to ensure you’re confident in how to fit your car seat before you purchase one.”

Which car seat is right for your car?

“In the UK, all children need to use a car seat from birth until 12 years old (or until they are 135cm tall). The car seat you buy needs to meet EU standards, and your child needs to be in the correct category seat for their age.

You should especially check that your vehicle model has ISOFIX anchorage points, and the length of the vehicle seat belt, as this may vary, even during the same production year of manufacture. Ensure you try the car seat in your car before you buy.

Children’s harnesses must be easy to adjust, so that they can be tightened or loosened depending on what the child is wearing. We recommend carrying out the two-finger test so if you can fit more than two fingers underneath the harness at the child’s shoulder bone, the harness needs to be tightened. Avoid carrying out this test whilst your child has a thick coat on, as it will not ensure the correct harness tension to protect your child.

The car seat should offer children who tend to sleep in the car, maximum side support and a comfortable sleeping position. Our car seats recline and feature an adjustable headrest to offer maximum comfort and safety.

Remember to keep rearward facing for as long as possible. The priority is to ensure that your child’s head is not over the top of the seat. Once positioned correctly, make sure they have enough leg room.

Rear-facing child safety car seats must not be positioned on the front passenger seat of cars with an activated front airbag. In this instance, the infant car seat must be installed on the rear seat. However, the safest position in a car is the middle or behind the passenger seat.

We do not recommend that people buy or use second-hand car seats, as they may have been involved in an accident, which could make them unsafe to use. Always, purchase from a reputable retailer who can support with aftersales service.

SHOPPING FOR YOUR FIRST SET OF WHEELS What to consider before buying your pushchair.

From modular systems to pushchairs, carrycots to tandems, there is a bewildering set of choices for parents-tobe and an even more eye-watering number of brands and style options to choose between. We spoke to Phil Howe, UK Country Manager for Peg Perego on what things parents should think about before they buy.

Why is getting your pushchair right so important?

“There is no denying that buying your pushchair is a very important purchase. And parents know this. Those first outings with your little one are magical. The first photo in their car seat as you leave the hospital together will be shown to countless friends and family. Stepping out as a family for the first time with your baby safely snuggled in their carrycot or lie-flat pushchair is a rite of passage and from then onwards, the system becomes an expression of who you are, your style, your identity as a parent. Style and substance are equal partners in this highly pressured purchase.

As a result, many parents will embark on their research asking friends and family for advice, and eyeing-up systems while out and about.

They will come to the shop with a brand and colour in mind, only to be drawn to options they haven’t seen before. And this is fine. It’s to be encouraged!

Everyone will have an opinion. It’s likely on more than one occasion your parents will tell you there was never this much choice when you were a baby!

Our key piece of advice is to take your time with your choice. Don’t buy a particular system because your friend tells you it’s the best, or because your neighbour has it. Don’t be afraid to shop around, experiment and try before you buy!

It’s so important to find the one that is right for you and your partner. We recommend doing your research and choosing three brands that match up to your personal criteria, then putting them through their paces.

These are the questions I would always ask 4 Are you city living? In which case storage size and manoeuvrability will be key factors for you.

4 Country living? Handling, suspension and agility will be important to assess.

4 Love to travel? Will your chosen pushchair adapt to your requirements at home and abroad?

4 Are you planning to grow your family quickly? In which case the flexibility of a single pushchair that converts into a tandem should be a consideration.

4 Will you keep the same car? If so, the boot space, and size and weight of the folded system is important.

4 Using public transport? How does the chassis fold? Can you do this with one hand if needs be?

Once you’ve whittled it down to three, get out to the shops to try them out. Experiment with swapping over modular parts, practice folding them down, manoeuvre around the shop, try the brake. Push with one hand. Then leave. Let the experience sink in and see how you feel a few days later. Only when you have chosen the system, then choose your colour.

This may all sound extreme, but you will not regret it. We know what a big decision this purchase is, so do not feel rushed into it. We are told time and again by parents that when they finally take the decision and make the purchase it’s a significant weight off their mind.

So, to help you even further we asked Peg Perego, the stylish Italian heritage brand to tell us the more unusual questions they get asked by parents-to-be when considering their modular systems. They compiled their top ten. You may want to consider these too when you visit the shops to put your top three choices through their paces!

Should I think about the weight?

Yes! This is very important to know – especially with modular systems. First, you need to think about how heavy the carrycot is once it is off the chassis because you will always need to remove the carrycot from the chassis to travel in the car (unless you choose the Peg Perego Pop-up carrycot which folds down while still on the chassis!). Too heavy and it will be cumbersome to lift, especially shortly after giving birth.

Also, what is the weight of the chassis with and without the pushchair seat? Establish if the seat unit even folds on the chassis. This is

Wheels. What’s to know?

Believe it or not, the wheels are a very important part of the system and should not be overlooked.

Parents often favour tubeless, solid tyres as they are puncture proof. When purchasing wheels like this it’s important there is adequate suspension to ensure a smooth ride for baby and maximum manoeuvrability for you. This will mean less effort is required to push. Also look for front wheels that are lockable and swivelling. An added bonus are those that can be removed as this creates more storage space in the car or at home. It also helps in the event of mud!

Think about the fold?

Once again we cannot stress how important this is. You will be folding the chassis every day. You must ensure that you are happy with how it folds and unfolds, so get the assistant to show you and try it for yourselves. Make sure you are happy with all aspects of the product, understand how everything works, how do you adjust handle, swivel and lock the wheels, fix the brake etc. All elements are key as you don’t want to find niggles and frustrations once your little one has arrived.

Attaching elements to the chassis?

This is important. There is nothing more frustrating than a great looking system that you struggle to assemble. Especially when time is of the essence, or it’s raining, or you’re tired...

Understand how each element fits and removes from the chassis (seat unit, carrycot and car seat).

How easy is it? Can you do this with one hand?

This will become part of your everyday so you do not want it to become a tiresome effort each time you want to leave the house. Don’t just watch the assistant in the shop. Have a go yourself.

The handle bar Very important for parents with quite different heights. What’s comfortable for one, might not be so great for the other. It’s important for both parents to feel comfortable as you will both spend many happy hours in the driving seat.

Are all car seats compatible?

This is a routine question and quite fundamental.

Many couples like the look of a modular system but have already chosen a specific car seat. Some manufacturers provide universal fittings and all good manufacturers will sell adaptors if not.

But it’s a very good question to ask if you have already chosen your car seat. Once again look at the car seat options available to you, you may see something that you had not considered.

Overnight sleeping Carrycots can have a dual purpose which many don’t consider. A good quality carrycot, with breathable fabrics, air ventilation, separate mattresses and rocking bases can be used overnight whether at home, or when travelling away. Always ask the retailer for suitability, but those that offer these additional extras along with a stand can even be used to replace a moses basket in the home.

Colour choices This is an interesting one and something not many people think of. You do not have to buy the whole modular system in the same colour. If you are drawn to one carrycot for those first precious months, but fancy something entirely different

for the pushchair seat as the baby grows into an active toddler, then choose a different colour.

This is your purchase, so it is entirely your choice.

Not everything has to be matching.

Raincovers included?

An all-important purchase for British based parents! For babies born at any time of year, there will always be the need for a raincover and if it is sold separately you will need to factor this into the price. Don’t forget the carrycot and the pushchair will need separate raincovers, so check what is included in the system and the price for both of them.

Should I think about two?

Many couples hope to have children close in age and if so, it’s important to think ahead with this purchase. You may wish to look for a chassis that can take a seat and a carrycot at the same time, not just those that can take two seats. Check you are happy with the placing of the carrycot when it is fully assembled with the seat out front. Can you see your little one in the pushchair? Can you see clearly to drive effectively? Do you understand all the different configurations available (seat unit, carrycot and car seat)? Then make sure you try the product. How does it feel? Fold the chassis and lift it. Some tandems can be quite a bit heavier and you’ll be lifting it on a frequent basis, so don’t buy one you struggle with in the shop.

Remember you’ll be using it during your second pregnancy with a small child in tow!”

Babies love to be held – by wearing your baby, you free your hands to accomplish your tasks and for this reason, many parents consider a wrap or carrier their most important piece of baby kit. How do I decide on a ‘style’ of baby carrier?

Parents or caregivers who frequently carry often have more than one kind of carrier as different types are suited to different situations – for example, an elegant ring sling snuggles a newborn close or offers a handy hip carry to an active up/down toddler, whereas two-shoulder carriers (soft-structured buckle carrier, meh dai or woven wrap) are better suited when carrying a heavier child for extended periods of time.

If you’re looking for a buckle carrier to truly last from birth to 18/24 months, then consider a carrier with either an infant insert of adjustable base and back panel. If you’re still carrying your child after 2-years, then consider ‘up-sizing’ to a toddler or preschool carrier.

How much do I need to spend?

To start, as little as £30-£60 for a stretchy wrap to carry your baby during the first 4-6 months as you both adapt to this exciting new chapter in your lives.

If you’re likely to carry your child for longer, then consider a budget of £60-£135+ for 1 or 2 carriers to cover the first 18-24 months of your baby wearing journey.

Does every baby like being carried?

EVERY KICK COUNTS Understand your baby’s movement and be confident.

Kicks Count is a UK charity that is raising awareness of the importance of baby’s movements in pregnancy. A baby’s movements indicate its wellbeing so it is important mums report any change in their baby’s movements as it can be a sign the baby is in distress.

Over the years there has been some confusion around what is expected when it comes to baby’s movements as multiple organisations were giving different advice. Kicks Count have joined forces with organisations such as the NHS, Department of Health, Bounty and other pregnancy charities to ensure all are giving the same information.

We have therefore asked Elizabeth Hutton, CEO of Kicks Count what is the correct advice around baby’s movements.

When should I start to feel movement?

Most women usually begin to feel their baby move between 16 and 24 weeks of pregnancy. A baby’s movements can be described as anything from a kick, flutter, swish or roll. The type of movement may change as your pregnancy progresses.

How often should my baby move?

There is no set number of normal movements.

Your baby will have their own pattern of movements that you should get to know. From 16 24 weeks on you should feel the baby move more and more up until 32 weeks then stay roughly the same until you give birth.

Why are my baby’s movements important?

A reduction in a baby’s movements can sometimes be an important warning sign that a baby is unwell. Two out of three women who had a stillbirth noticed their baby’s movements had slowed down or stopped.

What shall I do if I notice reduced movement?

If you think your baby’s movements have slowed down or stopped, contact your midwife or maternity unit immediately (it is staffed 24 hours,

Why Shouldn’t I use a home doppler?

A Doppler is a device that sends out highfrequency sound waves that pass through the skin and tissue and into the abdomen. When the waves encounter movement, such as a baby’s heart beating, they bounce back to the device. The device then translates the movement into sound.

The problem is that anything that moves inside the abdomen (whether it’s the baby kicking, air moving in your intestines, the placenta, or blood flowing in the mum’s arteries) is also translated into sound.

It takes lots of training and practice to distinguish a baby’s heartbeat from the other sounds. And even if a heartbeat is correctly identified that does not mean the baby is well.

The devices are marketed as a reassurance tool.

However if a mum notices a change in her baby’s movements the baby may be in distress. (The majority of mums who had a stillbirth noticed a change in their baby’s movements prior to the diagnosis) By using a doppler for reassurance, the mum may delay seeking medical attention which could be fatal for the baby.

These devices are not intended to be used by pregnant women. They are prescription devices and require training to operate correctly. Even the instructions on these products (although marketed towards mums) state “It is intended to be used by care professionals, including practical nurses, midwives, relative technicians and physician assistants” The safety of the Doppler ultrasound devices is stressed in product descriptions, in that they do no harm to the baby but the risks of delaying seeking medical attention and the limitations of the Doppler devices tend to be overlooked

What to do if you’re concerned about baby’s movements As seen above, many people are using the Doppler for ‘reassurance’ however the most significant risk is that even if identifying a fetal heart correctly, the baby could still be in distress.

This could lead to life threatening delays in seeking medical assistance. The best indicator of fetal wellbeing is always baby’s movements.

If you saw a person collapsed in the street would you check their pulse and walk away? No, you’d probably call an ambulance because this person is clearly unwell, even though they have a heartbeat. It is the same with a baby. If a baby’s movements change, it can be a sign that they are unwell. Just because they have a heartbeat does not mean anything. Everyone has a heartbeat up until the second before they pass away. All a heartbeat tells you is the baby is currently alive, which is the only time something can be done to help a baby in distress. If you wait until you can’t find a heartbeat it’s too late.
