Train to be a teacher with our Secondary Initial Teacher Training course

The Postgraduate Initial Teacher Training programme offers a range of benefits, including placement experience in our partner schools, the opportunity to apply your learning in practice, and full support from our BPN tutors and mentors. The curriculum is carefully structured to build on your previous learning, and you will have access to the latest research and evidence into teacher training.

Age ranges & subject specialisms

Student teachers train in the 11 - 16 secondary age phase (with post-16 enhancement) in one of the following 8 subject specialisms:

This route leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) allowing student teachers to teach right across the secondary age phase. Our Level 6 teacher training programmes do not include a PGCE, as it’s not required to teach in English schools.

We envision our student teachers gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with us before going on to complete the Early Career Teacher (ECT) programme to build a solid foundational understanding of pedagogy and teaching best practice.

As they progress in their careers, they might choose to specialise in a specific area of teaching and complete one of our Specialist NPQs. Should they develop ambitions to join their school SLT or become a headteacher, we could support them with a Leadership NPQ.

Eligibility

Initial Teacher Training is an ideal training pathway for individuals who hold a degree in any subject. This programme is perfect for:

• Graduates looking for their first teaching role

• Career changers who want to transition into teaching

Criteria

To apply for this programme, you must meet the following requirements:

• Hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in any subject with a minimum 2:2 classification

• Have achieved at least grade 4 (C) in GCSE English or mathematics (or equivalent)

• Must have held residency in the UK for the last three years

• While school experience is not mandatory, we highly recommend gaining some classroom experience to confirm your interest in a teaching career.

Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE)

Depending on your qualifications, you may need to do a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course before you start your teacher training to top up your subject knowledge. Our team will let you know if you need to undertake this funded course.

Costs

• The cost of training to teach is £9,535 for full-time study

• Student finance and maintenance loans may be available

• Self-funding is also an option

Bursaries and Scholarships

• Bursaries of up to £29,000 are available for trainee secondary teachers depending on subject

• Scholarships of up to £31,000 are also available depending on subject
