“This collection is inspired by the increasingly international and urban lifestyle of the modern gentleman. For 2015 I have further developed the underlying project of using Scabal’s incredible strength in cloth and manufacturing to give today’s man what he really needs. In creating each collection, my process always begins by asking myself - what really goes to the core of luxury? These days I find the answer is a concept of luxury that is evolving towards ideas of freedom and ease of movement, while still being protected and caressed by what we wear. For this reason I love to use wool, as it is not only the most constantly evolving and modern material available, but also simultaneously gives us a deep connection to our past.

It is this combination of elegance and historical reverence with modern technical achievement that makes it the ideal fabric to base this collection around. This season we will also be introducing a new slimmer cut model in ready-to-wear, and made-to-measure, alongside three new styles of shirts. It is my hope with this collection that not only does it continue Scabal’s constant evolution of the luxury industry, but also that it provides garments which enable the modern man to truly enjoy his life, relationships and passions. THE ARTIST’S VIEW ON MADE TO MEASURE

ERNESTO ARTILLO

In 1972 Scabal and Salvador Dali embarked upon a unique collaboration, and the famous master produced a series of paintings that portrayed his distinctive vision of menswear style. Continuing this tradition in recent years, Scabal have young artists to depict a personal interpretation of made-to-measure. The latest invitation was to a young Spaniard, Ernesto Artillo, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work in collage can be seen as a very modern

take on the same spirit of deconstructive creation that Dali pioneered. Stripping images back to their component parts, and introducing elements from Renaissance art, Surrealism, and nature, as well as raw paint and inks, Ernesto reveals the true nature of the image, and highlights the unique transformative power of made-to-measure.

“One of the most important elements portrayed in this collection is the relationship between history and modernity. For this reason, we have not only looked forward to what a man will wish to wear this year, but also drawn from Scabal’s designs of the 1970s, and early 1980s, in order to create a collection with a timeless quality. Culturally this was a time when menswear grew increasingly distinctive, as silhouettes became more powerful, and bolder fabric designs commonplace. Within Scabal, this time period was also of great importance; under the dynamic guidance of the late Mr. J.P. Thissen, we strengthened our reputation of delivering only the very best cloth to customers across the globe.

Revisiting the spirit of this era allows us to reconfirm Scabal’s signature style and unique place within today’s luxury industry, as well as the world at large. It has allowed us to bring a breath of fresh air to the existing standard collections, by adding new fancy and semi-fancy designs, while at the same time producing an expertly balanced collection full of new classics. We are also very excited about the two Special Editions that will be released this year. Hercules is a brand new pure wool collection whose 34 articles have been enriched with natural stretch performance. This ensures that not only will they give a perfect fit, but will provide unparalleled protection against creasing, without sacrificing comfort. One half of the collection boasts a rich selection of contemporary designs, such as subtle Glen checks, microstructures, and jacquard designs; each weighing only 280g, and coming in delicately accented colours. The rest of this collection contains a beautiful offering of 17 plains that weigh 340g. THE NOBLE WOOL CLUB

noble fleece story The story of Noble Fleece is much like the cloth itself. From afar it presents an inimitably beautiful appearance, yet can only be fully appreciated when examined closely. Taken in hand, one can see how each thread has been woven inseparably from the others. Individually they are but a single yarn, yet together they create something unforgettable. In the same way 500 years of history is intertwined with the cloth, each thread of the story entwined with another, working in concert they tell the tale of Scabal’s never-ending pursuit of perfection. One can feel in the handle how heritage and modernity have come together with such exquisite results. thread of time Our story begins on the idyllic plains of northern Spain. It is here that the ancestors of the modern Merino sheep could be found, in the flocks of the King, in Europe’s middle ages. Tracing their lineage back to Roman and Phoenician flock that clothed mighty empires, the Merino was created by mixing this stock with hardy English breeds. The wool of these animals was to be exported back to England, where it was spun into cloths the envy of the world. This was done at mills such as Scabal’s, which was built in 1539, and has been continually weaving ever since. Indeed, so vital to the King’s purse was this wool, that to remove a single sheep from Spain carried the death penalty, and it was not until 1723 that the Merino was allowed out of Spain. Within 100 years the fluffy flocks could be found in nearly every corner of Europe, and as war, and revolution weakened the absolute power of the monarchy, they increasingly moved into private hands. Some even made the trip across the Atlantic, their wool playing an integral part in the establishment of the United States of America, as many Founding Fathers owned their own flocks. It was an odyssey across another Ocean however, that would take the Merino to its spiritual home. In 1788 sheep found their way to Australia, and it took only 20 years for the Merino to prosper on the granite tablelands of the then mysterious fifth Continent. It was a dietary quirk that has given us the Merino that we know and love today, with the popularity of lamb leading European, and American breeders to focus on steering sheep towards larger broods. To the Australian palette, lamb was not considered as desirable as beef, and so the Merino was bred for wool, increasing in fineness with every generation.

It was a sound decision. Australia now plays host to almost 74,000,000 sheep, far more than the human population, and exports a quarter of the entire world’s wool supply. The best wool that has ever existed comes from Australian Merinos, 90% of whom can still be found on family owned, and operated farms. It was upon visiting such an operation that Scabal’s Executive Chairman, Gregor Thissen, began to write the next chapter in the Noble Fleece story. a most noble club A wise man once said there is nothing more important than family, at Scabal we truly believe this. That’s why Gregor Thissen, a third generation cloth merchant has devoted his life to the same company as his father J.P. Thissen. It is also why, when he saw how hard business was becoming for family-owned Australian Merino farms, that he felt a change was needed. It is for this reason that Mr. Thissen has started the Scabal Noble Wool Club, an ecologically sustainable, and economically fair farming initiative; “Here at Scabal we have always pushed the boundaries of what is possible with wool. We have also sourced our raw materials directly from the producers, but it was in visiting one of these remarkable ultrafine wool farms in Australia in 2013, that I first realised that this part of the industry needed both protection, and preservation. It is building on our heritage for industry innovation that with the Scabal Noble Wool Club, we want to bring attention to the skills of ultrafine wool growers. Together we can ensure the future of an industry that produces the most remarkable raw materials on the planet. It is also our intention to move beyond the currently dominant fibre diameter. In the industry this is styled as µm, or micronage, and it measures how fine the individual strands are. A finer strand means a softer, and often more elegant cloth. This is what is generally displayed as the ‘Super’ number, and it is our opinion that this system has reached its limits. We were the first company to break the Super 120’s barrier in 1974, and the Super 150’s barrier. That’s not to mention the Super 180’s and 200’s barriers that we also shattered, and it was Scabal that premiered the ubiquitous bunch, as well as many other innovations, so we feel that we are expertly qualified to evolve this system. We have also seen consumers become more and more knowledgeable about the products they love, and it is our intention to give them a better system that represents the modern ideal of perfection. Increasingly we see our loyal end consumers

demanding a product created with a conscience, and sustainable framework. Producing the best wool on Earth is a more complicated process than merely measuring fibres. The soil, the air, and overall environment that the sheep inhabits, all have an impact on the final product. As do the essential food and water the animals consume each day, and it is this natural foundation that must be carefully preserved for the future generations of this planet to enjoy. That is what the Scabal Noble Wool Club is all about.” from sheep to shop “To be selected for the Scabal Noble Wool Club growers must first satisfy a very discerning, and rigorous range of selection criteria. Fundamentally, the farms must breed pure, or “True-to-type”, Saxon Merino sheep, based on heritage bloodlines. We are the first in the world to encourage the management of bloodlines in this way, and in recognition of the low yield, but higher quality, that this breed produces; we have chosen to compensate growers above the current market trends. This ensures the future of the breed on Australian farms, and is hoped will spearhead the return to profitability of this animal. These animals should also be kept on the granite-based soils that they so love, which is found mostly 600m above sea level. The resilience of the wool, known in the industry as the staple strength, is also of paramount importance, to both tailors, and consumers. A high staple strength means that the garments created using Noble Fleece can withstand the test of time, and stand testament to the superior qualities of the cloth until well into the future. This can also be ensured with our crimping standards. Crimps are tiny bends in the wool,

which govern the ability of the cloth to spring back into place after wearing, and give the finished cloth a better handle. Importantly, it also allows the cloth greater elasticity, and therefore protection against wear, and allows air to become trapped increasing thermo-insulation. Finally, as the third-generation of a fabric family, I believe that heritage is important. The knowledge that is passed down, and honed from one generation to the next, cannot be surpassed. We therefore favour those growers who are working in the same field (both geographically and disciplinary), as their ancestors. The children on these farms today will be our partners in the Scabal Noble Wool Club tomorrow; this gives you a sense of the scale that we foresee for this endeavor. THE WORLD OF SCABAL

OUR STORY

fruits of the loom The story begins in 1539. It was in this year that our mill in historic Huddersfield, the cradle of English cloth, stopped grinding wheat, and began to work with cloth. Initially working as fullers, a job that involved preparing the woolen fibres by hand, looms were soon installed, and our weavers continued to handcraft cloth until the Industrial Revolution. It was in 1799 that the first mechanised loom was installed. This allowed for finer cloths to be crafted, but required constant monitoring and human judgment. Our process in this regard remains largely unchanged, with expert weavers guiding every step of the process.

Shortly thereafter Scabal would offer its own madeto-measure service, which continues to this day. Over 200 options, and more than 5000 fabrics are available, meaning there is limitless potential for the customer to create their perfect garment. dali and don corleone Soon after, the company collaborated with the surrealist master Salvador Dali, on a series of 12 exclusive paintings portraying his unique vision of the future of menswear. The paintings, depicting ties for sleeves and helium filled hats, form a core part of Scabal’s heritage, and can still be seen in our offices today.

hertz and soul

Scabal’s reputation was such that producers began to directly commission our cloths to dress some of the most iconic characters in Hollywood and Broadway.

Scabal as we know it today, was founded by Otto Hertz in 1938. A second-generation cloth merchant, Mr. Hertz would bring international buyers and manufacturers together.

Vito Corleone’s famous tuxedo, as worn by Marlon Brando in The Godfather, and almost every one of Robert DeNiro’s iconic 70 suits in Casino, were made with the assistance of Scabal.

This included our English mill, as well as Wain Shiell, an icon of British sartorial tradition that had been present on London’s legendary Savile Row since 1907.

In 1974, Scabal became the first company to break the Super 100’s barrier that had stood for centuries, with a Super 120’s cloth named Jewel.

The new enterprise was called the Société Commerciale Anglo Belgo Allemande Luxembourgeoise (Commercial Society of England, Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg), or SCABAL for short. new beginnings In a few short years Scabal was recognized as the leading supplier of the world’s finest cloths to the world’s best tailors. In 1972 the decision was taken to establish itself at the centre of the sartorial universe, on London’s legendary Savile Row. A new store was purposefully built at No.12; the number we can still be found at today. By 1970, Scabal had grown into an international company with many employees throughout Europe, Johann Peter Thissen, Otto Hertz’s most valued associate, was appointed to lead the company. J.P. Thissen soon added a new dimension to the company, by bringing the services of an atelier workshop that had been crafting made-to-measure menswear since 1937 into the core of the company.

This was indeed so revolutionary, that Scabal had to create the entire Super, or Superfine, classification system, which had previously not been needed. Not content with this advancement, Scabal was also the first in the world to produce Super 150’s, 180’s, and even 200’s cloth. The culmination of our efforts in this field is our Summit Special Edition, whose woolen fibres are the finest of all the 5000 cloths that Scabal has available today. the fabric of the future Scabal today is led by our Executive Chairman Gregor Thissen, the son of the late Johann Peter Thissen, and CEO Stefano Rivera, who joined in 2013 to take over day-to-day duties. We now have partners across Europe’s major cities that sell our ready-to-wear and made-to-measure garments, as well as showrooms and dedicated Scabal stores, and you can find our cloth in more than 65 countries worldwide.

With Handmade No.12 we place particular importance to the finishing, and the details, which have always been the hallmarks of bespoke tailoring for over three centuries. accessories Scabal launched its first accessories collection more than 15 years ago. Today our ties, scarves, knitwear, and belts, are fully handmade in Europe from only the best materials, including ostrich leather, calfskin, Egyptian cotton, silk, and cashmere. THE SPECIAL EDITIONS

Throughout Scabal’s illustrious history we have been experimenting with techniques, technology and materials in weaving, seeking to push the boundaries whenever we can. All of our Special Edition cloths are proudly made in England, at our historic mill that has been weaving for nearly 500 years at the same location. The culmination of these efforts is our Special Edition Summit cloth, whose woolen fibres are the finest of all the 5000 cloths that Scabal has available today. Intensive research and development allowed us to pioneer another first in 2000, when we debuted Diamond Chip, the first fabric in the world to handblend a gemstone into the weave itself. An exquisite Super 150’s and silk, Diamond Chip is available in a range of designs and colours, and is joined by another gemstone in Lapis Lazuli, a Super 150’s wool and cashmere blend. Precious metals are also incorporated into the cloths in our Treasure Box collection, in the form of both 22-carat gold, and platinum.
