Travelling is always an exciting adventure, learning about new cultures and surrounding yourself with new things.

With exploration comes the natural feeling of being unfamiliar with other cultural backgrounds and norms that can lead to misunderstandings and leave a sour aftertaste to both tourists and locals.

If you are a beginner, do not surf in intermediate and expert breaks. Make sure to be aware of the surf etiquettes or go with an instructor.

Wearing a bikini is not an issue. Although wearing a bikini in other contexts aside from surfing or being on the beach or island hopping, could be perceived as shocking and disrespectful to some people. What may seem normal to you, might not be for them. Be respectful.

STARFISH

We brought together a simple list of do’s and don’ts in order to have a more sustainable and respectful holiday that will lead to a better future for the island.

If you are lucky to see a starfish or ANY LIVE ANIMALS, do not take them out of the water. A starfish is an animal found in the ocean for one reason: they do not breathe air. They will suffer intoxication from carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide and will die faster than you think.

TAKING PICTURES When taking pictures of people, approach them first and ask for permission.

You may open beautiful conversations, rather than just shooting and leaving.

SHELLS “Only one shell, it can’t be harmful!”

Shells play an important role in the ecology of our beaches and oceans. Not only do they contribute to balance the acidity of the Ocean and break down to sand, they are the shelter to some types of crabs and smaller marine life forms, which protect them from predators and wave exposure. Bringing one harmless shell home, means leaving without a home another marine lifeform. Imagine if each visitor takes only one, how fast shells will disappear from our beaches?

VOLUNTEER Spend some quality time volunteering with the local NGO’s and share your skills with them. From cleaning up the beach to storytelling to the children.

Respect TREAT EVERYONE WELL Treat everyone with equality and respect.

Every country has its own history and was shaped by it in a different way. Do some research about the history of the Philippines, in order to open your mind and approach the locals in a better way.

WASTE-ENVIO- RECYCLE As a responsible tourist, you can do small steps to leave a smaller footprint.

• Avoid buying products in sachets.

DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE Very easy, if you have drunk do not drive. Take a tricycle or a habal habal for 50 pesos and leave your bike until the next morning. Medical care is a big issue on the island, there are clinics but they don’t have the needed equipment to assist serious accidents. And it happens a lot. So think twice before drinking and driving.

A REVOLUTIONARY YEAR AT THE RECYCLING STUDIO Last April 2018, the first Recycling Art Studio opened its doors with the goal of preventing soft plastics and styrofoam ending up in a dumpsite. This initiative came from the local NGO Nature Kids of Siargao whom, with the help of the community, fundraised to buy the first plastic shredding machine ever in Siargao. The shredded plastic is now used to fill up comfy and beautiful bean bags.

Their bean bags and pillows are between PHP 2,600 and PHP 3,800 depending on the style, size and fabric. If you would like to order their bean bags, visit them at the studio or email: hi@naturekidsofsiargao.com.

After over a year of operation, they have produced approximately 140 bean bags, each of them filled with approximately 20 kg of trash. In total, they have upcycled almost 2.5 tons of trash. The NGO has not only accomplished their initial goal of limiting the trash in the dumpsite, they have also avoided the pollution of soil and waters and reintroduced the garbage in a new cycle of life.

Most of the donations come from private households or businesses, who patiently segregated and cleaned their trash before bringing it to the Studio.

Last April, they introduced a new way to exchange your residues: the “Pay by Plastic Shop”, where money isn’t the currency. With your own clean trash you can buy a wide range of products such as food, school materials, books, hygiene items and much more. This project is a great initiative helping local families.

Weekly, the Studio swaps 150 kilograms of trash at the “Pay by Plastic Shop”.

The favourite items are for example: school bags which can be exchanged for two kilograms of clean plastic/styrofoam; laundry soap in exchange for 200 grams; a fresh fruit, in exchange of 300 gram of trash; spaghetti with tomato sauce, in exchange of 1.5 kilograms.

All throughout this year, they have taught their “eco-orientation programs” to a total of 875 kids. They have taught them how to recycle, the importance of preserving our unique planet and made them join the movement. Moreover, they have had six long term volunteers to help them out with new projects and daily work. The Studio has also given jobs to 5 employees, who have also learned the importance of recycling and today, they are spreading the word to their relatives about it.

Kining ginutay nga plastik gamiton para isulod sa komportable ug maanindot nga mga bean bags.

AN EMERGING ISLAND-SKATE CULTURE NEW SIARGAONON SKATING GENERATION Last December, Bravo Beach Resort opened a skate bowl with the intention to boost the skating culture in the island. The bowl, located at their resort in General Luna, is an approx. 11 meter-length pool with two circles of 5.60 meters of diameter and another smaller of 4.82 meters.

The entrance is free for everyone who wants to try out some skate tricks.

Bravo provides free protections and helmets for the local kids. Since their opening, the local kids have been attending the bowl non-stop to practice this entirely new sport for them.

THE BIRTH OF SKATEBOARDING “Skating, originally referred to as ‘Sidewalk Surfing’ emerged in 1958 as southern Californian surfers found a way to mimic surfing on land. They discovered that by using a small wooden board with metal roller skate wheels, they could make smooth turns on the sidewalk”, according to Grinnell College on their article “History and Evolution of Skateboarding”.

Proving once more that skateboarding and surfing share the same etymology and lifestyle. In the 60’s, skateboards began to be mass-produced but it was not until Frank Nasworthy, who invented urethane wheels, that the industry kicked off. These wheels rode much more smoothly and safely. In fact, they are still used on skateboards to this day.

For the fans of skating, Dogtown will surely sound familiar. ‘Dogtown’ “describes the depressed, lower-middle class, South Santa Monica neighbourhood that witnessed the birth of contemporary skateboarding. The “Z Boys” are the twelve members of the original Dogtown skateboarding team, a group of unsupervised Santa Monica preadolescents in the mid-1970s who convened around who went on to re-

volutionize the sport of skateboarding”, as expressed in the article.

They discovered that they could not only skate in the street but also in empty pools. This new playground offered new opportunities for experimentation and creativity that the flat ground could not provide. Tony Hawk, the first professional skateboarder in history, was the one who broke the boundaries of skating by launching himself into the air of an empty pool.

To make sure they go to school, kids can only skate from Monday to Friday after 4pm but on weekends they can skate all day long, which, without surprise, they do. The underage also need a guardian that looks after them and parents must previously sign a waiver.

Lex Lopez, who works at Bravo Shop, has been the main teacher of the local kids, showing them tricks and turns. He started skating at the age of 13, he got hooked and “could not think of anything else than skating all day”, he says.

The spirit of girl power is held by Cybille Gayle, a Filipina surfer and now skater. She takes care of the local kids and acts as their guardian when their parents are not around. She started longboarding in 2011 and only a month ago she challenged herself to skate in a bowl, “I love the feeling to be free when skating. It makes me not to think of anything- like a meditation. Falling is inevitable but it’s part of the game and you always learn from it” explains Gayle.

Through her Instagram, a follower from the U.S. saw what she was doing with the local kids and decided to sponsor them with skateboards. “It is a great support, but first I will make sure they learn how to read, as most of these kids are not yet able to read”, explains Gayle. There are around 15 boys, from 6 to 18 years old.

The opening of the bowl has also encouraged newbies to start skating, like Yu-

Jung, mother of Kalani and Kanoa. “After sitting five hours a day at the bowl watching my kids skate, I started to get bored. I saw how much fun they were having and decided to try. And it is so fun!”, explains Yu-Jung.

Her kids are 7 and 11 years old. They both skate and surf since the age of five. Both love to spend their afternoons at the skate bowl. “It is so fun when I accomplish new tricks”, expresses Kanoa the eldest. “It is good to let them learn how to fall and stand up. They are able to experience things I never did when I was little,” said Melvin, the father.

CHANGING MINDSETS Riding a skateboard has always been associated with danger, carelessness, and laziness and for this reason, skaters are sometimes marginalized than those who chose to practice other sports. But skaters value creativity, risk, and freedom. Whereas traditional sport is organized and run by adults, skateboarding is not. There are no referees, no penalties, no set plays.

Once more, surf and skate have many things in common. First of all, they share the need of balance and most of the tricks and maneuvers are similarly performed in water and on the ground.

Besides, both are individualistic sports, where you are the leader of your own path, these extreme sports share the same lifestyle and by practicing them you will create great friendships with same cultural values.

With skating and surfing, you are no longer depending on the speed of your feet. At the same time, prepare to get beaten up, as wipe-outs are present in both sports.

Above all: have fun, get stoked and feel free, it is all that matters when surfing and skating.

RIPPING LOCALS: THE CLOUD 9 MASTERS The Cloud 9 Masters competition came back this year stronger than ever. After 4 years of absence, Siargao Island Surfers Association (SISA) decided to bring it back. It went on for eight days straight, making it the longest running competition Cloud 9 has ever held and the biggest ever in terms of participants, 365 to be precise, all wanting to claim the title of the Cloud 9 Master.

There were five divisions: Grommets Division, Men’s and Women’s Open Shortboard, Master’s Division (30+ years old) and Airborne Division. A staggering 141 heats and over 37 hours of pure surf fun, this year’s Cloud 9 Masters will be remembered as epic for the years to come.

The conditions were tricky and the weather was not that great, but considering that June is one of the months with less swell through the year, Cloud 9 seemed like it made an extra effort for the competition to be held in proper conditions, giving just enough swell to have good waves.

With the usual 5am call time, the surfers competed for approximately 6 hours non-stop every day in this non-priority wave competition (whoever gets up first has the priority).

As we were moving on to the Quarterfinals, the competition got more and more exciting. Last year’s PSCT Juniors Division Champion, Gabriel “Lerog” Antipasado showed us that he is more than ready to compete with the adults, getting a 9.5 wave score - the highest Photographer score given by the judges in the entire Pedro Moreno

competition. The crowd went nuts and the judges couldn’t believe it as he got into a barrel, did a couple sweet cutbacks and an amazing aerial reverse during his Quarterfinals heat.

Another champion came back strong this year: Philmar Alipayo. He joined two divisions: Men’s Open and Airborne. Alipayo surfed his heats with full power making it to the Finals of both divisions.

“The power of Catangnan” proved once again their supremacy on Cloud 9, the surfers who competed in the Finals of Men’s Open were all from Catangnan: Eduardo Alciso, Philmar Alipayo, Marvin Delamide, and Gabriel Lerog. Alipayo was naturally proclaimed Champion of the Men’s Open Cloud 9 Masters.

Even if there was only 18 participants competing in this category, the ladies of the Women’s Open Division brilliantly demonstrated what local women and girls are capable of. The queens of Cloud 9, Nildie Blancada and Manette Alcala both made it to Finals competing with the less experienced Ana Mae Alipayo and Shela Mae Arjona. It was a very tight Final as they were all ripping the waves. In the end, after a lot of suspense, Ana Mae Alipayo was proclaimed Champion. “It has been a decade now that I’m surfing Cloud 9 and it is my dream to be a Cloud 9 Master. I can’t believe it,” affirmed Alipayo after receiving her prize.

For the first time ever, long term foreign-residents were able to join the Cloud 9 Masters competition. All of them participated in the Masters’ Division (+30 years old). During the Semi-finals of this category, John Carby and Glenn Turner were the only foreigners still competing and they had to face the 19#

legends of Cloud 9: Carlito Nogalo, Piso Alcala, Aye Catulay, Eloy Nogalo, Dionisio Espejon and Arkipo Figuron. All of them have been surfing Cloud 9 since their young age, being the first ever generation of surfers in Siargao.

The young local surfers or the “grommets” proved to us that they are the future of Philippine surfing with their ability to do aerial maneuvers that level with their older counterparts. Fearless, 9-year old Kai Kai Alcala also competed in two divisions: Grommets and Airborne. He finished second in the Grommets Division and made it to the Quarterfinals in Airborne Division. In the Grommets Finals, Kai Kai, Toby Espejon, Jayward Alciso and Mark Hent Hucay battled for the title.

The 14-year old Jayward Alciso, younger brother of Men’s Open finalist Eduardo “Tata” Alciso, was crowned winner of the Grommets Division.

Airborne Division was very fun to watch. The surfers had to flirt with the sky with their aerial tricks and land perfectly to score, barrels did not count on this category. In the Finals, Piso Alcala, Philmar Alipayo, PJ Alipayo and Jefferson Espejon were battling. The one and only Piso Alcala offered the crowd a fascinating performance, bringing the gold home and the title of Champion of Airborne division. Alcala also won the Masters Division against Glenn Turner, Aye Catualy and Eloy Nogalo.

The Cloud 9 Masters was a very local competition where only Siargaonon surfers and longtime residents were allowed to surf. No longer competing for the National Title, we saw once more the legends competing. Undoubtedly, it was a beautiful competition to watch and feel.

The first ever Cloud 9 Masters was held back in 2008 when Manuel Melindo, Rudolfo “Osot” Alcala and “Rasta” decided to organize an event only for the surfers of Siargao to create a surf scene among locals and to create a launchpad for the Nationals as well as to challenge themselves to be better athletes every day.

Still held with the same spirit, this time they beat all the records, including holding the longest and with the most participants surf competition ever held in the history of Cloud 9.

Peter Ian Capocao also known as Pedro, is a philanthropist by nature and dreams of being a tour guide around the world.

He’s been traveling The Philippines for the past 10 years and has always been passionate about it. He says he has fallen more in love with his life because of his fellow countrymen.

SKY AND SEA Blue sky and crystal clear waters with countless shades of blue is a deeply intoxicating but also common sight in Siargao.

Being a tour host, exposed in the sea, has given me a different perspective in life. Digesting life isn’t easy as it overwhelms us and it kind of questions the conditioning and security we harness by different influences.

This island has brought me pieces of enlightenment.

Be inspired # rosity, planted by such genuine culture, I started to understand life better as I went through these changes. The local life helped me in understanding better what Siargao is made of.

The island is adaptive to the abundance and influence of the environment. I am fortunate to be working for a company that embraces sustainability in the local scene while generating income. It’s such a fulfillment to live in an environment where people share and grow together. Everyone is involved in sustainability and most especially in maintaining the environment. People here have better awareness in caring for nature, knowing it’s the one that gives livelihood to the people.

Siargao, being a community island, sets to be the model island in the Philippines starting from the practice of having less is more. It taught me to be more mindful. I’ve always been passionate about the Philippines and its people, my countrymen.

THE LOCAL LIFE HELPED ME IN UNDERSTANDING BETTER WHAT SIARGAO IS MADE OF

When I moved to Siargao, I remember telling myself, “I just want to go somewhere far where I don’t know anyone.” Siargao came to my mind and it just felt right. I booked a cheap one-way ticket, packed one bag and only had seven thousand pesos in my wallet. I really didn’t have any idea on what was going to happen. I just thought maybe I can start by engaging with a community I can be involved in, from volunteer works of any sort. Where I can share my expertise with arts – the idea is just to start somewhere.

It was also this latent need to go back to my Bisayan roots since my family is from Mindanao. To re-learn and speak the language, to discover the beauty and authenticity of my homeland is what I aspired to achieve.

The first thing I did was to enjoy the island and see how it was; from the community, travelers/tourists, to the people who have found home in Siargao. I wanted to learn how the people treat the island and how the island can be with the people.

I had to see how the beauty of this island will make me feel. Absorbing the new environment brought me out of my comfort zone but there was also this related awakening.

A Siargaonon family from the back road was introduced to me when I needed shelter and for me to start again. They made me feel comfortable and taught me a lot by sharing what they have with so much simplicity. I only asked for a small space but they gave more than what I asked for: love and gene-

In the end, the concept of life provides us with choices. In this island I learned one word I can use everywhere, “respect” is a transparent word that can unite us. When used well and understood with common sense it harmonizes us. To live and be in a paradise is to respect each other because we can see people coming from different horizons. Respect the local community because they have such a big heart and have welcomed us in their home. The vision for everyone to have is: we should grow hand in hand with the community because the community model is the future society and collaboration is the future. Let’s all go forward with our inner values and share them to the new generation, the young ones for whom we are responsible. We can harness the potential of the island while preserving its essence as long as possible.

“Love life because life loves you; life will never tell you that it hates you.

Only we tell ourselves that we hate life.” With this mindset, the energy around you will revolve in so many ways that will make sense.

Living in an island as beautiful as Siargao is a privilege. It’s a place for everyone.

Every month since the beginning of this year, we shared with you a new saga of articles: Tales from the Philippines.

The Philippines is the only Christian country in Asia and one of the most devoted in the world.

This unique devotion is impressive even to historic Christian countries like Italy, France or Spain, especially when some Filipinos crucify themselves during Holy Week.

Surprisingly though, Filipinos are also very superstitious and many ancient (or pagan as some would say) beliefs, are still strong in our culture.

This month, for the last episode, I decided to talk and focus on one particular legendary creature from the Filipino culture. It is by far the biggest and most powerful one. As huge as an island like Bohol, nicknamed “The Sun and Moon Devourer”, this titanic and feared creature is the Minokawa.

There are many versions and descriptions of the Minokawa depending on the region and local beliefs and this is the version I choose to describe. The Minokawa is an incredibly massive bird/ dragon-like monster that lives in outer space, between the Earth and the Sun. It is part of the legends from the first living men. This “winged terror” has its beak and claws made of the strongest steel, his huge eyes are like mirrors, thus it is hard to detect how horrible his intentions are and it is tricky to know where he is looking down at. Full of deadly feathers, they are extremely sharp and lacerate anything on its path.

The legend starts before time began, a very long time ago, when one night, the Minokawa swallowed the entire Moon. Struck by fear and despair, people would all go outside screaming at the lost celestial object. Desperate and fearing for the end of time, they cried and screamed so loud while beating gongs, that the mythical creature finally noticed them.

While looking down on Earth to see where the noise was coming from, the Minokawa got distracted, opened his humongous mouth, letting the Moon escape and get back to its original state. At another time, the monster also tried to swallow the Sun. Distracted again by the tiny humans, the Minokawa also let go of our life-bringing star. From then on, the colossus still wanders in the sky, on the eastern horizon between the Earth and the Moon ready to seize his chance to swallow the Moon again.

The prophecy says that a day will come when the Minokawa will successfully eat the Moon, he will then be unstoppable, will move on to the Sun and devour it as well. Finally, he will come back for his ultimate meal, the Earth itself. This would be the End of Times.

MGA SUGILANON GIKAN SA PILIPINAS IKA-UNOM NGA BAHIN

Matag bulan gikan sa sugod niinig tuiga, nagpaambit kami ninyo og bag-ong serye sa mga artikulo: Mga Sugilanon gikan sa Pilipinas. Ang Pilipinas mao ang nag-inusarang Kristiyanong nasod sa Asya ug usa sa labing deboto sa kalibotan.

Makapahingangha kining linahi nga debosyon bisan sa mga karaan nga Kristiyanong nasod sama sa Italya, Pransiya o Espanya, labi na nga adunay ubang mga Pilipino nga magpalansang inig Semana Santa.

Pero makatingala hinuon nga ang mga Pilipino matuo-tuohon usab ug daghang mga kinaraan, o pagano pa matod sa uban, nga mga pagtuo ang kusog gihapon sa atong kultura.

Niining bulan sa kataposang bahin, nakahukom ako nga maghisgot ug tutok sa usa ka partikular nga biliranong nilalang gikan sa Pilipinhong kultura. Mao kini ang kinadak-an ug kinagamhanan.

Sama kadako sa isla sama sa Bohol, gianggaan kini og “Ang Kumakaon sa Adlaw ug Bulan”, kining hadako ug gikahadlokan nga nilalang mao ang Minokawa.

Adunay daghang bersyon ug paghulagway sa Minokawa depende sa rehiyon ug lokal nga tinuohan ug kini mao ang bersyon nga akong gipili nga ihulagway. Ang Minokawa dako kaayo nga daw langgam/dragon nga mangtas nga nagpuyo gawas sa kawanangan, tunga-tunga sa Kalibotan ug Adlaw. Kabahin kini sa leyenda sa labing unang mga tawo. Kining “pak-ang kahadlokan” adunay sungo ug kuko hinimo sa labing gahi nga metal, iyang dagko nga mga mata daw samin, mao nga lisod makibal-an unsa ka daotan iyang mga intensyon ug mabitikon masayran diin siya nagtan-aw sa ubos. Puno sa makamatay nga mga balahibo, hait kaayo kini sila ug malaslas ang tanan anaa sa iyang agianan.

Ang leyenda nagsugod sa wala pa magsugod ang panahon, dugay na kaayo kaniadto, usa ka gabii niana, ang Minokawa mitulon sa Bulan. Nahadlok

ug nagguol, ang tanan mga tawo minggawas nga nagsiyagit sa nawala nga langitnong lawas. Desperado ug nangahadlok nga matapos ang panahon, nanghilak sila ug nanyagit og kusog kaayo samtang nagbagting sa ilang mga gong, nga ang mitikanhong nilalang nakabantay kanila.

Samtang nagtan-aw ubos sa Kalibotan kon diin gikan ang kasaba, ang Minokawa nalinga, miabli sa iyang dako nga baba, maluwa ang bulan ug mibalik sa orihinal niini nga kahimtang. Sa laing higayon, ang mangtas misulay usab pagtulon sa Adlaw. Nalinga sa mga gagmayng mga tawo, ang Minokawa nakaluwa na usab sa maghahatag sa kinabuhi nga bituon. Gikan niadto, ang higante maglibod-libod sa kalangitan, sa silangan nga kapunawpunawan tunga-tunga sa Kalibotan ug Bulan andam nga moangkon sa iyang higayon nga tunlon pag-usab ang Bulan.

Ang propesiya nag-ingon nga moabot ang adlaw nga ang Minokawa malamposong mokaon sa Bulan, ug dili na siya mapugngan, isunod niya ang Adlaw ug kan-on usab kini niya. Sa kataposan, mobalik siya para sa iyang kataposang pagkaon, ang Kalibotan mismo. Kini mao ang Tapos sa Panahon.
