CELEBRATING PHILANTHROPY 2020-2021 REPORT

PHILANTHROPY AT BERWICK

THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS: The 2020-2021 academic year started and ended with our students and faculty on campus. Through the invaluable efforts of the entire community, students and faculty engaged in innovative learning and community connection together, in-person. Over 300 attendees joined the Innovation Celebration in April, which included student presenters from China and grandparents from the United Kingdom and India. The 70 students spanning Grades 4-12 shared, over Zoom, the culmination of their yearlong Innovation Pursuits. The outdoor classroom became an integral part of the Lower School program, where faculty and students brought outside nearly every element of what traditionally takes place in the classrooms, learning through exploration and

discovery. The ability for the community to reunite in these ways was made possible by the support of generous donors like you.

Philanthropic support to The Berwick Fund fueled the School’s ability to provide the necessary accommodations for a successful year of joy and deep learning. Your support helped us raise over $800,000 in unrestricted funds for The Berwick Fund, including the annual day of giving–One Berwick.

The Bill and Kathryn Matthews Memorial Fund Bill Matthews Sr. joined Berwick Academy in 1963 and served for 16 years in teaching and administrative roles.

The Bill and Kathryn Matthews Memorial Fund was created in honor of Bill and his wife Kathryn, recognizing and celebrating their commitment and dedication to the School.

For the last several years, alumnus Dick Shafner ‘65 and his wife, Janet Eustis, have reinvigorated this endowed fund through generous matching gifts, inspiring others to give as well. Their leadership support, along with the support of many other alumni, parents, and friends, has grown the fund to over $90,000.

In 2016, Berwick partnered with Whittier Falls, an entity of the Dover New Hampshire Housing Authority, to admit a student known as The Matthews Scholar. Scholars start in the fourth grade and are awarded full tuition support which follows them through graduation. In the 2021-2022 academic year, five Matthews Fund Scholars will span Grades 4-9.

Albert L. Kerr served Berwick Academy from 1957-1964, during the “Boarding Era”. The Albert L. Kerr, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in his honor and supports a scholarship that is awarded annually to a student who is known as the Kerr Scholar.

The scholarship continues through graduation if the student remains in good academic standing. Faithful support from alumni and Dr. Kerr’s former students make a Berwick education possible for current and future Kerr scholars.

The Mary Z. Schleyer Scholarship Program In 2009, the Schleyer family established the Mary Z. Schleyer Scholarship Program to ensure that more students on the Seacoast are able to access and experience the depth of a Berwick education. Each year, a competitive application process is undertaken to award full tuition to two new students who are entering ninth grade. These students, known as the Schleyer Scholars, are recognized for their extraordinary academic achievement, distinctive talents, and leadership. Over the course of the scholarship, the Schleyers have contributed $2 million, supporting 40 students. We are deeply grateful to the Schleyer family for their transformative support, dedication, and partnership with Berwick Academy.

The dedication of our faculty and staff is inspiring each year, but was especially so during the 202021 academic year. The faculty’s continued commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience fueled student centered learning in every division.
