from the Head of School Dear Berwick Donors, It is such a pleasure to share this Celebration of Philanthropy report with our constituents, as it speaks to the power of a community working towards a unified goal. Each gift that is referenced here has helped our School take a critical step towards our ultimate mission of “promoting virtue and useful knowledge to the rising generations.� In particular, the $780,470 we raised last year in the Annual Fund allowed us to offer each student on this campus an education that was more exceptional than what could have been provided from tuition revenue alone. All of our donors have had direct impact on the lives and experiences of the students on the Hilltop.

When considering the Annual Fund, it is worth noting the amount of growth we have seen in the past five years. Parent participation has increased 17%, alumni participation has tripled, and the dollars raised have grown by over $200,000. All of this has been achieved during a challenging economic landscape, accentuating the generosity of this remarkable community to an even larger degree. Unrestricted Annual Fund gifts truly transform our ability to achieve programmatic goals and are a significant indicator of performance and community satisfaction for me as Head of School.

When we consider the overall results from 2012-2013, two major highlights must be recognized. The first is that in a year when the Berwick Parent Community decided to offer a smaller gala rather than a traditional community benefit, our fund-a-need results were astounding. By raising over $100,000 at this single event, combined with a few other generous donations, we were able to forge ahead with necessary and impressive improvements to the entrance of Fogg, the Main Entrance, and the Burleigh Davidson parking lot. Additionally, we began a major gift initiative called The Rising Generations Initiative, focused upon building our unrestricted resources for the Berwick Academy endowment. Through the generosity of our trustees and other major donors, we were able to secure an additional $1.6 million of philanthropic commitments to BA in the context of this effort. Already these gifts have had a significant impact on the School and we look forward to securing additional support for this initiative in the months ahead.

I continue to believe that additional philanthropic fuel is the seminal catalyst for Berwick as we work to achieve our 2020 vision of National Excellence and Seacoast Values. While we work to bolster our faculty compensation, financial aid, academic programs, campus, and overall financial durability – I will continue to do my best to show our constituents why an investment in Berwick Academy right now can have an exceptional impact unlike any other charity one might consider. It is an honor to be out in front of this challenge, knowing that so many have stepped up to support the cause. I look forward to exceeding all of our philanthropic goals in the future, and I thank you deeply for making Berwick one of your top philanthropic priorities each year.

Mary Z. Schleyer Scholars Program The Mary Z. Schleyer Scholars program was established to provide two entering ninth grade students (one boy, one girl) full tuition support. The award follows recipients through graduation provided they remain in good academic standing, demonstrate continued need, and participate fully in the life of the School. Scholarships are awarded based upon extraordinary academic achievement, financial need, and distinctive performance in arts, athletics, community service, or leadership.

Starting in 2008, The Schleyer Family committed $100,000 annually to support this program over a 20-year period, totaling $2,000,000. This scholarship program allows the Academy to continue to attract exceptional students each year. Now in its fifth year, the Academy is proud to have awarded ten outstanding students with this scholarship. Berwick remains enormously grateful for the support and generosity of the Schleyer Family for making this program possible.

Berwick Academy Vision Statement By 2020, Berwick Academy will become a nationally recognized coeducational day school. We seek this recognition for the unique qualities of the Berwick experience.
