70th Anniversary of Bethanga and District Rural Fire Brigade On Sunday 27 September 2015, the Bethanga Brigade celebrated the 70th Anniversary of its’ affiliation with the Country Fire Authority, and coincidentally, the 77th Anniversary of the foundation of the Bethanga Bush Fire Brigade. The function was held at the Bethanga Soldiers’ Memorial Hall and was attended by a large number of Brigade members and their Families. The President, Jim Jefferies, opened proceedings at 2pm by welcoming Councillor Aaron Scales, Deputy Mayor of Towong Shire, and District 24 Operations Officer Mark Owens from Wodonga. Other distinguished visitors included Tallangatta Group Officer Max Wood, Deputy Group Officer (Retd) Graeme Redman, and Talgarno Brigade Captain Peter Star.
CFA Brigades within the Shire. Operations Officer Mark Owens outlined the changed nature of the new CFA Service Awards which now recognise Active and Efficient Service. A total of 61 Awards were presented to Brigade members, ranging from 5 year certificates to a medal and 70 year clasp to Leo Packer. Councillor Aaron Scales presented Certificates of Appreciation to Robin Nielsen and Mary Northey, and a certificate of Brigade Life Membership to ex- Captain Bob Martin. Aaron then commended John Northey for his extensive and valuable Brigade and Community work. John Northey thanked Councillor Aaron Scales, Mark Owens and the other visitors for attending. Jim
Ron Evans, in the role of Brigade historian, presented an interesting anecdotal account of the Brigade’s formation and its early activities which was enlivened by his reference to many of our predecessors. This talk set the scene for the rest of the afternoon.
Jefferies asked members Leo Packer (70 years), and Sarah Jones (40 days) to cut the birthday cake, and that concluded the formalities.
