The Bermuda Sports Journal was established in part because many of the sporting organizations have not kept records of the achievements of their athletes whether it be in photographs, documented history, or statistics. As people grow older, memories fade and is forgotten, therefore, unrecorded information frequently become fables. The goal of the Bermuda Sports Journal is to interview people and document their stories to ensure preservation of all their stories. We aim to be as accurate as possible, whilst relying on people’s honesty and their re-collection of events, including correct dates and times, therefore, some information may be inaccurate.

Building Infrastructure and Unity

Martin Luther King Jr. once asked, “Where do we go from here, community or chaos?

Over the years, I have observed the lack of order in how so many things in Bermuda are functioning in what I call “organized chaos” and I wonder if it is by design or just a lack of knowledge, or both. How do you organize a running race and the person who crosses the finish line first is not the winner? Or you stage a national championship motorcycle race, and everyone is on a different cubic capacity engine. A club that has a “letter of understanding” with the governing body to have sanctioning rights without being a member, the right to be the President of a club and not be a financial member. A country that imports mechanics, plumbers, electricians, and nurses, because it does not build trade schools to find that same talent in its own communities.

This comes from a deficiency in infrastructure, the vision and purpose of long-term development goals. In the absence of guidelines, chaos rules and undermines all good intentions. The bible of any organization is its constitution, the rulebook, and by-laws, while separate, must be adhered to as if they are written in the constitution. People who hold positions must be knowledgeable of their responsibilities and are not privileged or above subordinates. You cannot make rules on a whim and change them at will to fix a pressing problem.

This is the basis of a good infrastructure.

Infrastructure can be defined, but not limited to, as the basic structure of an organization or system which is necessary for its operation. Building infrastructure creates a framework to streamline the methods of communication, money management, rules, regulations, and penalties for a group or organization to work effectively.

This is the same whether it is a club, governing body or a country, an infrastructure is essential to create harmony and avoid chaotic situations. Whether it is a small club or a large governing body, infrastructure is designed to create unity and formalities.

He was passionate about speed and fierce a competitor in powerboat and automobile racing for more than 50 years. At the age of 16, he moved to England in 1960 to pursue his dream motorsport racing and landed a job working for a Porsche car dealer. It was through Porsche that he landed on the company’s pit crew at the 1960 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Soares competed in many races in England, finishing runner up in the 1969 Lotus Championship.

In 1971 he also finished runner up in class, in his Darren Sport race car. Aside from England, he also competed throughout Europe, including Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Belgium earning numerous awards. The highlight of his racing career was competing at the world-famous Daytona International Speedway in Florida, winning his class in the year 2000. Duke was also a stunt driver in the movie, Ivory Ape and the stunt driver that ran over Cyril “Big” Smith at PHC Field.

In 1975, he laid the foundation to start the Bermuda Karting Club and served as the club’s first President. The Bermuda Karting Club, as a branch of the Bermuda Auto-Cycle Union, held its first race around the PHC field in conjunction with the Mobyette “Hot Rod” racing on May 24, 1976. Administrative differences would see karting separated from the BACU and struggle for many years for a permanent

home, moving to Bermuda Athletic Association (BAA) Field, the Nationals Sports Club, White Hill Field, Kindley Field Road and the former US Naval Annex and racing on numerous surfaces, from gravel, to grass and asphalt. In 2019, He was inducted into the Bermuda Motorsports Hall of Fame for his contributions.

Maynard ‘Duke’ Soares, the “Father of Bermuda Karting” and a legend in Bermuda motorsports was age 79.

Ken Parker, Bermuda Auto-Cycle Union President has passed.

Ken Parker was the Operating Manager at BAC Group of Companies Monday to Friday, but on weekends he was a motocross enthusiast. His son Luke started racing at age 4 and Ken got involved with the Bermuda Auto-Cycle Union (club) to support him and was helpful on the committee in 1996. In 1999, he would serve as President until 2004, the year the sport was relocated to Southside, St. David’s. Somewhere in the mix, he caught the motocross bug and decided to see what it was like to race a motocross bike. In 2001, when international motocross switched from two-stroke engines to four-stroke, Ken would be the first person to import and race a four-stroke, a Yamaha YZ 250F in 2001.

As the year 2022 ended, Ken Parker passed away suddenly, leaving his wife Andrea, two children, Luke and Beth (Damani), three brothers, brothers Duane, Michael, Robert, one sister Ellen Arce (Saul) and his motocross family to reflect on his memory.

bascome fc set to go

Bascome FC is set to go

In 2020, the Bascome FC academy was accepted into the United Soccer League Two, a development league for Major League Soccer, and were due to compete in the seven-team Mid-Atlantic Division. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the program was delayed. After a little more than two years, Bascome FC are finally set for their first competitive action, albeit not in USL League Two as originally planned.

Bascome FC now has three youth teams, aged under-13, under-15 and under-19 that will take part in the prestigious USL Academy Cup, which are scheduled to kick off in Florida in March 2023.

Andrew Bascome, the director of football and head coach, has a contingent of approximately 60 youngsters at the same time over to Florida.

Their goal is to develop their youth program and create a USL League Two Team with players coming through the youth teams. Andrew is hopeful that the opportunities, on and off the field, for his young players in the United States, will create possible college scholarships. Many collage coaches attend these games, as well as USL and MLS coaches, so it is a great opportunity to put our young players on display.

The development of the Bascome FC program is a long-term project and hopefully five or so years down the road, the franchise academy will bear fruit.

How to lower your salt intake

Most of us count calories or at least think about the amount of calories we consume. We know most things about carbohydrate intake, burning fat and how much protein to digest daily. However, the weight is still not falling off.

One important factor that can contribute to the success of long-term weight loss amounts to a four letter word – salt. Are you consuming enough or getting too much?

Balance

Firstly, sodium is necessary for your body, just not too much or too little of it. If you’re not getting any sodium at all you wouldn’t survive. If you’re digesting too much sodium, your body will retain too much water, which can possibly jeopardize your weight loss efforts.

It is recommended by the American Heart Association that we should consume no more than 2,300 milligrams of salt per day. That is

like a leveled teaspoon full of salt. Have you checked the sodium level on those packaged items in your cabinets? Look closely because items that may be low in calories, make up for it in carbs and sodium. A daily serving of sodium could be found in just one processed food snack, so watch out.

Retention

Salt retains water. It can often be the main issue when it comes to weight gain and can cause dehydration. It can also contribute to high blood pressure. When your sodium levels are high and you’re working hard to lessen your waistline, salt will stop water from doing its job. Instead of being flushed from your body, it will instead be retained thus causing bloat and water weight. So, instead of working with your metabolism to burn calories and fat effectively, it will work against you, and all your hard work at the gym will seem like a waste of time.

Bermuda Sports Journal | 2023 20

Sodium-Healthy Diet

Check out some of the ways below to have a sodium-healthy diet:

Processed foods are always full of sodium.

They would not stay fresh without all the salt and artificial ingredients. It will take some getting used to, but once you switch processed foods for natural ones, you’ll realize that you never felt better – in both body and mind. If you still feel the need for a packaged snack buy a single package so there are no leftovers. Try raw nuts instead of salted.

Salted nuts that are prepackaged are not great at all. Instead, keep raw almonds or unsalted peanuts at home to snack on.

Ease

off slowly.

If you’re addicted to salty snacks, ease off it slowly. Excessive salt can be addictive. If you’re used to sprinkling it on top of your food, try switching to a light salt, or adding your favorite salt free spice. With a gradual change, it won’t feel as drastic.

Ease off slowly

Prepare meals at home. Try to cook your own homemade meals. Most foods prepared in restaurants usually contain high amounts of sodium.

Go easy on the salted condiments. Avoid consuming condiments that contain high amounts of sodium, such as soy sauce, salad dressing, and ketchup. You can purchase salt free condiments that season almost as well as salt.

Rinse canned foods before eating them.

Read the labels

Read labels on everything to know the amount of sodium contained in your food. Salt can be a blessing, or a curse for your weight loss. Start now by being mindful of how much salt you’re consuming daily. Gradually lower your sodium, get creative with your eating habits and B-Active For Life!

Why Sports Psychology Is Important An Athlete’s Candid Reflection

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting with a young athlete and student whose sporting experience was instrumental in her decision to pursue a career in sport psychology. We had a candid discussion about how our community is still learning about the value of sport psychology and the tremendous opportunity to leverage it more in Bermuda. There is no doubt that one of the keys to success for individual athletes, teams and our National Sports programme is the addition and integration of sports psychology. I hope that her thoughts and experience help to underscore its importance and value and inspire coaches, parents and athletes alike. As a result, we can ensure everyone has a positive and beneficial experience in whatever role they play in sport, whatever level they ultimately achieve or for whatever duration they participate in sport.

It’s 2015, and I can finally leave the sport that has made me cry five times a week for the past four years. The rule my parents gave me, and my sister, was that it didn’t matter what sport we played, as long as we were active. I hated swimming, so once the opportunity to fill up my week with field hockey presented itself; it didn’t take a second thought. At 11, I thought that all my problems were solved, and my sport-related tears would be dried.

Then I’m 14 and crying after a regular Sunday match after losing yet again, feeling like there was more I could have done. At 16, I’m crying because I’ve been doing drills on a rollout piece of AstroTurf in my driveway, trying to continue training for a team sport without leaving my house. Suddenly I’m 19 and crying watching the last 5 minutes of our final game in the Central American and Caribbean games, unable to finish out the tournament due to injury.

22 Bermuda Sports Journal | 2023

After each one, I would turn to my parents for support, and they would offer it the best they knew how. But it was never what I wanted to hear. I would be stuck in my own head, thinking the most negative thoughts, such as; “I’ll never be as good as I want too, and I should just quit”. Even though I’ve gotten older and I’m able to push these thoughts to one side, my emotions still get into the extreme, almost matching the intensity of the matches I’m playing.

This past year I have been at the University of Loughborough, studying sport psychology and playing field hockey for one of the university teams. And although I initially went into psychology because it was my best subject in high school, my rationale has changed. I’ve been the girl who almost quit her sport because she didn’t think she was good enough. The key word is ‘almost’. What about the people who do end up quitting?

I want to be there for young people who feel like ending their sporting career is their only option. Those who are worried to return post injury. Those who are representing in their first international competition, and suddenly feel like they can’t perform.

So, what if a few years down the road, a young athlete feels like ending their sporting career because they can’t keep the negative thoughts out or stay calm under pressure? Instead of them being left to her own brain, they have the option to speak to someone who is trained for this type of situation. They work together to keep them in their sport, and they end up playing at the highest level. This is the type of situation I want to be a part of.

My goal is for Bermuda to understand the importance of making sure that athletes are prepared for the physical game, but also the mental game that goes hand-in-hand. Especially when Bermuda has such an active community, most children going through at least one sport, and most still playing at some level. Athletes shouldn’t be forced, but the option to speak to someone who is specifically trained in dealing with sport-related issues should be available for those who need it. The reason for an athlete leaving the sporting community should no longer be because they couldn’t mentally handle the pressure, even more so now that mental health in this generation is held in high importance. Even though sport psychology wasn’t around when I was growing up, I would like to believe that having the option would have benefited me, and maybe I would have cried a little bit less and the journey may have been a little less challenging.

Paget’s Lions President, Jamie Ramsey could not contain his emotions as his team won the “Shield” championship.

The Bermuda Motocross Association could not predict the weather conditions for the biggest trophy day on their events calendar -The Boxing Day Classic.

With extremely cold temperatures and heavy rain showers dumped on Bermuda from Christmas Eve and throughout the four day holiday, the foul weather resulted in a low turnout of spectators, but motocross racers are used to riding in all types of weather conditions. The rain made track conditions muddy, and the racing was reduced from three motos per class to two.

American Expert rider Denver Rigsby, who was to be flown in for the event, missed out on the Boxing Day races because the U.S. airport was shut down where he was stuck for three days.

He is one of a contingent of overseas riders competing in the series which also includes Brazilian siblings Kayky and Kevin De Pinho and Dutchman Willem Vermeulen.
