Bermuda Sports Journal | 2020

The Bermuda Sports Journal was established in part because many of the sporting organizations have not kept records of the achievements of their athletes whether it be in photographs, documented history, or statistics. As people grow older, memories fade and is forgotten, therefore, unrecorded information frequently become fables. The goal of the Bermuda Sports Journal is to interview people and document their stories to ensure preservation of all their stories. We aim to be as accurate as possible, whilst relying on people’s honesty and their re-collection of events, including correct dates and times, therefore, some information may be inaccurate.

SPORTS

THE SPORTS AND DISCIPLINE When I look back at my motocross career, something has become crystal clear to me: “motocross is like life”. Life is full of obstacles, just like motocross - hills and valleys, ups and downs, left and right choices. In life you make mistakes, just like motocross - you missed a shift or stalled the engine. In life you get knocked down, just like motocross - flying over the handlebars hurtling to the ground. In life you get tired and frustrated, just like motocross - every lap you get more and more exhausted, nearly ready to give up. So how, as an athlete, do you stay focused and win? The only way to do this, in my opinion, is to realize the importance of discipline in your sport. Like life, your path to the top of your chosen sport is an obstacle course in front of you. As long as you have a drive to be at the top of your game, you will need a plan and a driving focus to work your way over the hurdles and around the obstacles, working your way uphill to the top without giving up. Discipline is at the core of an athlete’s character and enables them to block out the distractions of life and to focus on achieving their goals. Self-discipline makes it easier for an athlete to recognize the importance of practice, practice, practice and careful preparation and planning whether competing in an individual sport, as a member of a team, or in life. Whether it is in the board room or on the football pitch, some people are naturally talented, and they make things look so easy and effortless. You, on the other hand, may have to work ten times harder than they do just to reach the same level of success. Life is like that too. And just like life, you may need to practice a little longer than others, work a little harder, endure more setbacks. But take a deep breath, hold your tongue. Your journey to success will be guided by your own level of discipline. Participating in sports from an early age helps to develop the lifelong principles of discipline. Parents and coaches play an invaluable and important role in teaching and instilling the art of discipline, especially in young athletes. Parents and coaches alike have the responsibility of identifying

bad behavior early and correcting it immediately, to avoid having a disgraceful result later in the game or in life. Helping a young athlete embrace discipline early is key to future success. It is also important not to forget that competing in sport is a mind game. There are many competitors who will study your weaknesses and use them to their own advantage. By studying your game and identifying your weak areas, they may plan to frustrate you, causing you to retaliate and be ejected from the game. You lose, they win. You cannot win from the sideline serving out a suspension because you lost your head with an obstruction. Just like all aspects of life, self-control plays a vital role when you encounter obstacles and barriers. A high level of self-discipline is the key component for all athletes whether they are winning or losing. And in life too, you are not always winning and coming out on top, but with discipline, you keep working towards your goals, never giving up until the game is finished. Athletes and fans are passionate about sports and success. Someone will ultimately win, and someone will lose, but a loss should never be taken as a ‘death sentence’. Every loss is an opportunity to improve your discipline and ramp up your motivation to the next level. If you lose today, good self-discipline and self-assessment will prepare you to try harder the next time and the energy of the competition means that everyone wins. Participating in sports does many things for an individual, but above all else, it teaches not only important life lessons but the core value of discipline to success. - Ras Mykkal

LADIES IN THE HARBOR This year’s ‘You Go Girls’ race to raise funds for the Women’s Resource Center was a virtual running race due to the Covid-19 virus. MICHAEL DECOSTA

- NOVEMBER 23, 1945 - AUGUST 22, 2020

Michael DeCosta is the third of six children born to Anthony and Dorothy DeCosta who came to live in Bermuda from the Azores. Michael was born in Bermuda on November 23rd, 1945 and attended Gilbert Institute and from the age of seven he packed groceries at the Hamilton Piggy Wiggly store, now called the Marketplace. By age 13, he had left school and started working full time at the Phoenix store as a delivery boy. Approximately 43 years ago Michael and Joe Repose formed D&R Construction until Joe retired, and Michael went on his own with DeCosta Construction. Apart from work, Michael loved horses and spent a lot of time driving carriage and harness racing. He raced ponies locally and abroad, often purchasing fast ponies, bringing them back to Bermuda, selling them and going back to purchase a faster one. It is because of Michael that Bermuda has had so many fast ponies in the Vesey Street harness racing. Michael leaves to cherish his memories, wife Dalia, four children Michelle, Scott, Nick, and Melinda and one grandchild Amelia Rose. He was in his 75th year.

EARL (TOWNSEY) RUSSELL - DECEMBER 29, 1928 TO AUGUST 30, 2020 Earl ‘Townsey’ Russell was one of the most creative goal scorers of his generation, a player who could lead his team to victory almost single-handedly. He is highly respected by those who played with him, and even more so by those who had to defend against his goal-scoring ability. In 1942, Bussy Butterfield of the Key West Rangers noticed Townsey’s love of football when he was just 11 years old and at the age of 13, Townsey was in the Key West ‘A’ team Townsey was the man of the match in the initial Bermuda Football League versus Bermuda Football Union game in March 1953 where he scored four times to lead his side to victory. His performance was so dominant he was named Sportsperson of the Month. His most unforgettable game was when he led the Key West Rangers, who were four goals down against Somerset Eagles at the half time. In the second half, Townsey scored five goals to defeat Eagles five-four. On March 12, 1950 Key West played Pembroke Juniors, a team that had not been beaten since they were founded in 1943. Pembroke Juniors had won 52 of 56 matches with four draws. Townsey Russell and the Key West Rangers beat the Juniors 4-3; at the Sports Arena. In 1951, Earl ‘Townsey’ Russell, Ed Durham, Cal ‘Bummy’ Symonds, Quinton Butterfield and Leroy ‘Nibs’ Lewis moved from their Spanish Point community to Warwick and formed PHC’s first football team. On March 17, 1957, Russell won his first of three F.A. Cups when PHC defeated archrivals Pembroke Juniors 4-3, it was the only game the Pembroke Juniors lost that year. In 1960, PHC beat Dock Hill Rangers 5-3 to win their second F.A. Cup. Townsey ended his football career with PHC, winning their third F.A. Cup title with a 2-1 win over Young Men’s Social Club at Somerset field. He was a class act, a real trickster. When England’s Sir Stanley Matthews XI played a Bermuda select side in the 1950s, Townsey said Sir Stanley tricked him twice, but when Matthews tried the same move a third time, Townsey stole ball from him. Earl ‘Townsey’ Russell was a mastermind, a genius with a football. ‘Townsey’ is the Godfather of a football dynasty. His sons, grand-sons, and great grandsons are all Bermuda football maestros. Earl ‘Townsey’ Russell was inducted into Bermuda’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. He died August 30th, 2020 at the age of 91.

Health & Fitness I hate exercising...but Shops and spas are open again, and we are meeting friends and family and making teeny tiny plans in our minds about what we might do to finish off this summer. However, while I am relieved that things are picking up, I still feel a slight sense of grief. I am having lockdown regrets, thinking of all the things I planned to do and hoped to achieve in hibernation that may never come to pass. Thinking back to the beginning of lockdown, you might remember starting to do some of the things you’d been putting off, like fixing up the house, finishing that puzzle, baking fresh breads for the family or improving your fitness. We all had so much time every day. We had time to exercise, time to chat with friends, plenty of time for webinars and virtual workshops and lots of time for reading. And now, as the spare time begins to dwindle, replaced with social functions and other things, I realize I will never get to some of the task I set to complete and it fills me with regret. It might seem useless, but there is a sort of loss, for the things we did not do during lockdown, from our personal goals, family, and work-related items as well. When lockdown began, we were thrown into a state of “what’s next?” And for most of us, big plans began to form. I had planned on throwing myself into reorganizing different parts of the house, enhancing my fitness regime, finishing my diamond puzzle, and posting workout videos.

8

Bermuda Sports Journal | 2020

I also regret the things I did not do more of like attending a few webinars. I joined in with some webinars during lockdown, but I wanted to run my own, which I have not quite accomplished yet. Suddenly, the world is opening again and some of our plans will never come to fruition. Some recent statistics state that over half of us feel we spent too much time on social media or watching TV which prevented us from doing the things we wanted to. Instead of kettlebells there was “Tiger King. However, some of the things you did not accomplish during lockdown are still doable. The first step to coping with the regret is to decide if you really do want to do the things you initially wanted to complete. After all, it is not like we are in a complete reversal of lockdown, as there is still more time on our hands than there was before the pandemic. So, start that project or get back into walking again. It may take a little longer now that you are busier, but you can do it. Also remember to congratulate yourself and be kinder to yourself about the things you completed. Because, while you might not have learned to play the piano, taken up painting or accomplished your fitness goals, you baked for your family, created new recipes and spent more time with your family than you have in years and that is something to be grateful for! Start that project and B-Active for Life!

SPORTS MEDICINE

NORTHSHORE MEDICAL WITH Dr.

Jeffery Macleod

EVIDENCE BASED PERFORMANCE SUPPLEMENTS Dr Jeff MacLeod MFSEM PGDip (SEM) Sports Medicine Doctor Bermuda Rehabilitation and Sports Center at Northshore Medical At the start of 2020, the Sports Nutrition market in the United States was estimated to be worth around 17 billion dollars. Despite the scale of the industry and the claims made by their marketing arms, evidence for the efficacy of most sports performance supplements is sorely lacking. If the standard of academic rigour expected in Western science is applied to the evidence for sports supplementation, the consumption of the bulk of the products found on the shelves in gymnasiums and sports nutrition stores could not be supported. Regardless, as most athletes will go to great lengths to try to enhance their performance beyond what strict conditioning, sportspecific training and bespoke nutritional programs can provide, the sports nutrition market continues to grow. So, for those of us who wander into the local sports supplement store to stare bemusedly at all the containers depicting ripped torsos and physiques reminiscent of Thor on a good day, what should we make of the promises of incredible results overnight? When we turn to the size 6 font listing the active ingredients, what should we be looking for? It depends, of course, as to what you are trying to supplement. If you are simply trying to find a product that supplements your already relatively healthy diet, something that will ensure that you exceed daily protein requirements and allows you to consume some easy additional calories when you are no longer able to shove one more mouthful into your over-

burdened digestive system, then most of the protein-rich powder supplements will suffice. But if you are genuinely trying to enhance your already optimal performance with the most evidence-based supplements, to squeeze those few extra percent from the well-oiled machine that you have honed through persistence, dedication and perspiration, then here is what you should be looking for:

Tier 1 – Established Evidence Base

• Nitrate/ NO3 for endurance sports – especially team sports – of 12-40 minutes duration. Nitrates reduce the Oxygen cost of sub-maximal exercise by 5% through improving O2 uptake, as well as proposedly reducing the ATP cost of muscle force production, improving mitochondrial respiration as well as skeletal muscle blood flow. Break out the vegetables, as this supplement is best obtained from leafy green and root vegetables, such as spinach, rocket, celery and beetroot. But if the convenience of a tablet or liquid form is preferred, a packaged supplement can be substituted.

Caffeine for repeat High Intensity Endurance Sometimes the simplest things are the best. There is good evidence that 3-6mg per kg, 60 minutes prior to activity, will improve repeat sprint tasks of less than 5 minutes duration by up to 6.5%. Endurance capacity time-to-fatigue, ie. running to exhaustion and training reps to failure, can also be increased by 3-5%. This is suited to sports with repeated explosive sprints, such as football, and a second dose of 1.5-3mg per kg can be taken at half-time. If you are going to try and achieve these doses with coffee, you will be lining them up on the bar. A single shot of espresso coffee contains around 65mg of caffeine. So the average 70kg footballer would require 7 shots prior to a game, and another 3 at half time.

Creatine Monohydrate (CM) for repeat High Intensity Endurance. CM increases the intramuscular creatine stores by 30%. Suited for shorter high intensity efforts than Caffeine, CM enhances bursts of less than 150 seconds, but especially those less than 30

seconds. In weight sensitive sports this improvement can be offset by the 1-2kg weight gain due to water retention. The loading phase should be 5mg four times daily for a week, with a maintenance dose of 3-5mg once daily. It should be consumed with a mixed protein/carbohydrate meal of at least 50grams of each, as this enhances muscle creatine uptake.

Beta-Alanine for High Intensity sports 30s – 10min. An amino acid produced naturally by the body, this is a chemical precursor to Carnosine, which is an intracellular buffer against the weakening effects of proton accumulation on contracting muscle cells. Over 10-12 weeks Beta-Alanine can increase Carnosine to 80% above resting levels. There is no evidence beyond 12 weeks so it is best used for pre-competition loading, taking either 3.2-6.4g daily for a minimum of 2 weeks. Side effects include skin rashes and itchiness.

Sodium Bicarbonate for high intensity bursts less than 60s. NaHCO3 is a blood buffer that increases pH across cellular membranes, thereby generating stronger action-potentials and muscle contraction. It has been demonstrated to increase performance by 2% in single sprints, although in repeated sprint bouts up to 8%. Dosing 0.2-0.4g/kg of lean body

13

mass (LBM), 60-150 minutes prior to performance. A common side effect is gastrointestinal upset, which may offset any benefits, so it needs trialing prior to competition use. Ingestion with small carbohydrate meals of 1.5g/kg of LBM can reduce risk of GI upset, as can splitting the dose to 3-4 times daily, taken for 2-4 days before an event.

Short though the list may be, for established benefit, those are the supplements that have an adequate evidence base, and only for the listed types of activities. There are many other supplements that are well-marketed but supported by dubious evidence – L-Carnitine, Sodium Citrate, Glutamine, Arginine etc. – and many for which the existing evidence demonstrates no benefit. An additional consideration is that any substance ingested can cause side-effects and, where there is little established benefit, the risks are in the ascendency in the risk-benefit equation. This lack of evidence reinforces the supremacy of targeted conditioning, sport-specific training, and bespoke nutritional programs in preparing the athlete for optimal performance in their respective sporting competitions.
